Your Delta Blue card from American Express includes a variable annual percentage rate (APR) of 20.99% to 29.99%. American Express will determine your APR based on your application and credit profile.

Here’s a look at variable APRs available at Delta SkyMiles Blue card:

If you make a late payment or if your bank returns a payment, American Express is within its rights to switch you to a penalty APR of 29.99%. It may not, depending on your creditworthiness and account history. After you’re hit with the penalty, this APR will stay for a minimum of six months.

Delta SkyMiles Blue credit limit

If American Express approves you for the Delta SkyMiles Blue card, your credit limit will be assigned based on a range of factors. This might include your income, credit history, credit score, debt and other factors the issuer decides are relevant. Most cardholders have a limit of at least $1,000; yours may be considerably higher.

Compared to other Delta airlines cards , the Delta Amex Blue card is a pared-down option.

Although it earns miles and offers a few perks, it doesn’t include benefits that are standard on other cards — namely, free checked bags. If you travel frequently, you’re probably better off getting a different card; the lack of bag fees alone will likely make up for the annual fee. Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card vs. Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card falls somewhere between the Blue and the Reserve cards. It has a $150 annual fee after the first year ( see rates and fees ). For that, you get a free checked bag, priority boarding, a $100 credit to Delta Stays and a $200 Delta flight credit after you spend at least $10,000 in a year. Plus, you’ll earn 2 SkyMiles for every dollar spent, compared to the 1 mile per dollar with the Blue card. 

If you’re a somewhat regular traveler but not quite ready for a luxury card, the Gold card is better than the Blue — it only takes five flights to make up for the annual fee in checked bag fees alone.

Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card vs. Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a general travel credit card; instead of SkyMiles, it earns points that you can redeem for travel. You’ll need excellent credit to be approved for this Capital One card , compared to the good credit that’s required for the Delta SkyMiles American Express card.

Both cards eliminate foreign transaction fees, but the VentureOne is accepted in more places around the world — an important consideration if you plan to travel internationally.

Why Is the Sky Blue?

It's easy to see that the sky is blue. Have you ever wondered why?

A lot of other smart people have, too. And it took a long time to figure it out!

The light from the Sun looks white. But it is really made up of all the colors of the rainbow.

When white light shines through a prism, the light is separated into all its colors. A prism is a specially shaped crystal.

If you visited The Land of the Magic Windows , you learned that the light you see is just one tiny bit of all the kinds of light energy beaming around the universe--and around you!

Like energy passing through the ocean, light energy travels in waves, too. Some light travels in short, "choppy" waves. Other light travels in long, lazy waves. Blue light waves are shorter than red light waves.

All light travels in a straight line unless something gets in the way and does one of these things:—

reflect it (like a mirror)

bend it (like a prism)

or scatter it (like molecules of the gases in the atmosphere)

Sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

Closer to the horizon, the sky fades to a lighter blue or white. The sunlight reaching us from low in the sky has passed through even more air than the sunlight reaching us from overhead. As the sunlight has passed through all this air, the air molecules have scattered and re scattered the blue light many times in many directions .

Also, the surface of Earth has reflected and scattered the light. All this scattering mixes the colors together again so we see more white and less blue.

What makes a red sunset?

As the Sun gets lower in the sky, its light is passing through more of the atmosphere to reach you. Even more of the blue light is scattered, allowing the reds and yellows to pass straight through to your eyes.

Sometimes the whole western sky seems to glow. The sky appears red because small particles of dust, pollution, or other aerosols also scatter blue light, leaving more purely red and yellow light to go through the atmosphere.

Is the sky blue on other planets, too?

It all depends on what’s in the atmosphere! For example, Mars has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide and filled with fine dust particles. These fine particles scatter light differently than the gases and particles in Earth’s atmosphere.

Photos from NASA’s rovers and landers on Mars have shown us that at sunset there is actually the opposite of what you’d experience on Earth. During the daytime, the Martian sky takes on an orange or reddish color. But as the Sun sets, the sky around the Sun begins to take on a blue-gray tone.

Shutdowns from coronavirus create blue skies in California, could inform future pollution control

Reduced emissions have had a surprising effect on ozone levels.

Blue skies and fluffy white clouds have come to California, but it isn't good news.

As businesses temporarily close and reduce hours and people around the world limit travel and practice social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic , Earth-orbiting satellites have observed significantly reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides, which come primarily from cars, trucks, power plants and factories. The decrease in emissions was especially prominent in California, which was the first state in the U.S. to issue a shelter-in-place order, and has led to fresh air and a beautiful bright blue sky for residents of Southern California. 

Using data from instruments on the ground, aircraft and satellites, the California Air Resources Board's Air Quality and Meteorological Information System tracks air pollution. For Los Angeles and San Bernardino in California, they found significant decreases in air pollution. In some areas, air pollution has decreased by more than 50% at nighttime, according to a statement .

"Traffic-related pollution has been shown to be associated with short-term and long-term respiratory health impacts, so sensitive groups with high outdoor exposure will have a respite from vehicle pollution during this time," Cesunica Ivey, a researcher and chemical/environmental engineer at the University of California Riverside, said in the same statement.

Ozone troubles

However, according to Ivey, this pollution reduction has led to higher levels of ozone at night. Ozone, which can also have an effect on human health, is a gas created from the combination of pollutants (like nitrogen oxides) and other molecules. But lower nighttime nitrogen oxides, caused in part by fewer people driving home from work during rush hour, should mean lower nighttime ozone levels, that isn't the case. 

While nitrogen oxides can create ozone when combined with other molecules, it can also react with ozone, which happens most frequently at night.

"March 2020 ozone levels aren't much different when considering the daily averages from 2017 to 2020," Ivey said. "It's the daily ozone swings that have changed, which is directly a result of the shutdown."

Ivey and her colleagues are working to better understand how efforts to control and reduce emissions changes ozone behavior, specifically in southern California. 

Despite pointing out this adverse ozone side effect, the researchers emphasized that improvements in air quality have been exceptional in demonstrating just what can happen when people work together. They added that they hope that people can work to make such great changes once things "return to normal." 

"Shifts in individual behavior can be incentivized by local, state, or federal policies, such as work-from-home tax credits," Ivey said. "Businesses, universities, and other public organizations can allow employees to telework when it makes most sense and carry out meetings and business services via video conferencing whenever possible."

Worldwide changes

California isn't the only place in the world where fresh air and blue skies are returning. A new interactive map produced by the media outlet Earther that runs on the Google Earth Engine and uses data from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-5P satellite, shows the striking differences in air pollution from before and after the new coronavirus spread into a worldwide pandemic.

The map shows nitrogen dioxide emissions from December 2019 to March 20, 2020 and the difference is staggering. Bright orange and red "hot spots," signifying high amounts of emissions, which once jumped off the map, seem to completely disappear with the passage of time.

U.S. Navy Blue Angels team arrives in Vero Beach for weekend air show

V ERO BEACH − The six-member U.S. Navy Blue Angels in their F/A-18 Super Hornet jets arrived Thursday morning at the Vero Beach Regional Airport, flying in as if in performance mode.

They're the stars of the  2024 Vero Beach Air Show  this weekend at  Vero Beach Regional Airport .

During their aerobatic demonstration, the teamwill make you ooohhh and aaahhh many times as they sail through the blue sky. They'll perform Saturday and Sunday, but not Friday. Their performance times aren't disclosed to avoid traffic jams.

There will be many other performers, including the A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team, as well as aircraft displays and a food fest.

The air show is 6-8:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Vero Beach Air Show only sells tickets online through its website www.veroairshow.com .

Subscriber only, outdoors | road to summit of mount blue sky, highest paved road in north america, will not open in 2025, road repair project will prevent travel on the continent’s highest paved road next year.

Driving the road to the summit of the 14,266-foot peak , the highest paved road in North America, is one of Colorado’s most treasured summer activities, as well as a lure for out-of-state tourists. The closure had been rumored for months, but was not confirmed until the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests put out a news release with details on Thursday.

The release also offered details of the road’s reservation requirements for this coming summer.

Construction on the FHA project will begin in late July or early August this coming summer with temporary lane closures at Summit Lake, 1,400 feet below the summit. The purpose of the project is to repair damaged roadway from the Summit Lake overflow parking area to the first switchback above the lake, according to the release.

The road will close for the winter this year starting the day after Labor Day, as usual, and will not reopen until Memorial Day of  2026. The closure will be imposed at the seasonal CDOT gate, located 500 feet beyond the entrances to the Echo Lake Campground and Echo Lake Lodge.

This year, the road is tentatively scheduled to open on May 31, conditions permitting, a week later than usual.

“Mount Blue Sky Recreation Area requires a full team to manage, from operating the welcome station to cleaning the restrooms at the summit,” said Clear Creek district ranger Patsy McEntee, according to the release. “With Memorial Day occurring earlier in May this year, increasing the potential for weather impacts, and to align with seasonal employee start dates, we’ve decided to delay the traditional opening by a week. We hope making this decision early helps the public plan ahead.”

Reservations must be made through recreation.gov , which will become available on May 21 at 8 a.m. Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance.

The mountain, previously named after 1860s-era territorial Gov. John Evans, was renamed last year because of his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864.

Local election results: Labour and Tories now think Khan has won in London, amid 'wild' rumours; Cooper says party 'needs to reflect' on Gaza after council election results

The Tories suffer historic losses in the local elections, while Labour admit the party's stance on Gaza was "obviously" a factor in its failure to do even better. Meanwhile, both main parties now think Sadiq Khan has won a narrow victory in the London mayoral race, despite "wild rumours".

The final election result for today has been declared - but there will be more to come tomorrow. 

Seven mayoral contests will be announced: London, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, South Yorkshire and Salford.

Fourteen London constituencies will also be announced, along with the London-wide top-up list that will elect another 11 assembly members.

Plus, four councils should be declared - North Tyneside, Stroud, Warrington and Epping Forest, where most of the results have already been announced.

A further eight police and crime commissioners will be revealed. 

Over the course of last night and today, Labour has gained nine police and crime commissioner (PCC) posts from the Conservatives. 

The party also held five posts, with another 10 to be declared over the weekend.

This means Labour holds 14 PCCs and the Conservatives 12, while Plaid Cymru has retained Dyfed-Powys.

While these elections get much less attention than those for mayors, councils and the London Assembly, they could be significant as they include many of the shires that traditionally lean towards the Conservatives.

We went into this set of local and mayoral elections with two big questions: Is Labour on course for a majority and how bad is it going to be for Rishi Sunak?

On the Sunak question, it's a very clear-cut story.

The Tories are having as bad a night as their worst nightmare.

There is a 19-point drop in the Conservative vote compared with the 2019 general election - one of its worst performances ever.

But it's not an all-out win for Labour, either.

The council is now under no overall control, with the Liberal Democrats, Labour and independents making gains. 

The Tories had held Gloucester for 20 years.

Boundary changes in the area have helped the Liberal Democrats and meant all seats were up for election this year.

It's been a bruising day for the Conservatives as the party looks on track for its worst local election result ever.

Labour has taken control of a string of Leave-voting councils, secured victory in the mayoral election in Rishi Sunak's back yard and won the Blackpool South by-election.

Our economics and data editor Ed Conway picks out the example of Rushmoor - a typically Tory-voting council which Labour has taken control of for the first time - as an example of a significant Labour win.

"Even in the late Tony Blair period... the Labour share was always low and it's just climbed up in the last few elections," he says.

"We're seeing here unprecedented results, that's underlining the national swing."

Despite Labour's success, however, there are "other stories going on", Ed notes, with the party's vote in areas with larger Muslim areas falling, potentially as a result of its stance on Gaza.

It's a huge moment for the Lib Dems as they gain Dorset Council from the Conservatives.

The party took 13 seats from the Tories to secure an overall count of 42.

If you're just catching up, our political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh can get you up to speed in the space of a minute.

There's just a handful more council results set to be declared in what has been a bumper day of local elections.

We've had a few more through this evening - including a gain for the Lib Dems from no overall control in Tunbridge Wells.

The party won eight seats there, while the Tories lost three and Labour lost one.

The Lib Dems have also held Woking council after gaining four seats.

Elsewhere, Labour has held West Lancashire , while Elmbridge , Bristol and Cherwell remain under no overall control.

In the days running up to the elections, Number 10 was verging on the unsubtle.

Senior Downing Street figures were conceding that should Ben Houchen lose the mayoralty of the Tees Valley Combined Authority to Labour, there would be a challenge to Rishi Sunak. At that point they would be unable to stem the tide of letters sufficient to trigger a vote of no confidence.

In turn, this might have triggered an unwanted and catastrophic early election.

This is unusual behaviour - for the prime minister's closest allies to be openly speculating on his survivability - yet it is a sign of the turbulence of politics of the moment.

I took three of my female electrical apprentices to experience the zipline at skull canyon. The staff was fantastic and professional. The place is amazing. Lots to do and see. The corny jokes and humor from our guides was icing on the cake. Great place to take the whole family.

This place is so well kept and well run. My adventure buddy and I had a blast on the Extreme Course. This was our first time zip lining and we are so glad we picked Skull Canyon. Blue Sky Cellar – Disney’s California Adventure

Blue Sky Cellar , the preview center for DCA’s expansion, re-opened on July 16 with some updated exhibits.

Most of the content on the Show Ideas and Concept Development is the same, but the bulletin board on Toy Story Midway Mania has been replaced with one showing concept art for two new dining areas: Lucky Fortune Cookery in the Pacific Wharf (in the old Cocina Cucamonga location) and Pardise Garden Grill and Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta in the Paradise Pier area. Pardise Garden Grill replaces the old Burger Invasion restaurant, and Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta will be a re-theming of the current Pizza Oom Mow Mow restaurant. The two will share an expanded dining courtyard and are set to open in spring 2010.

There’s a display cabinet at the end of the ramp that has miscellaneous items in it, mostly related to Blue Sky Cellar. But there’s what I thought was one very special item down in the lower right corner – a notice about a company retirement party for long-time Imagineer Marty Sklar , who retired on July 17. (His window on Main Street was also dedicated on July 17.)

The video in the “Screening Room” is completely new, and focuses largely on the World of Color show. Some of the paper models Steven Davison describes are on exhibit in a display case in the middle of Blue Sky Cellar. There’s also a few sneak peeks at Silly Symphony Swings (2010), the Little Mermaid Attraction (2011), the new main entrance plaza (Coming Soon), and Cars Land (2012).

In the center of the room, most of the content of the display cases has been replaced. The model of Paradise Pier is the exception, but it has been updated to show the location of the show platform and fountains for World of Color.

There is also a second model of the viewing area for World of Color.

“Disney Imagineers used this model to create new landscaping, determine the best sightlines, and maximize capacity for the World of Color viewing area. This design reflects the formality and detailing typical of turn-of-the-century public parks, seamlessly blended with today’s requirement for effective circulation and spectacular viewing terraces.

“The roses and boxwood in the planters and the two new trellises would have been right at home in parks of the past. Meanwhile, a new state-of-the-art water play area creates a cool zone for daytime activity, while a hidden stage provides maximum flexibility for future events.”

This model is described below:

“Study model for vault to hide sound and lighting equipment towers. By day they look like natural stone piers around the lagoon. At night they open to allow the towers to rise into place for World of Color .

This model was used to direct the rockwork shapes and to develop the painting scheme.”

As I mentioned above, in a third display case are examples of the paper art created for World of Color .

“The World of Color creative team employed a variety of animation techniques to create new background and special effects for the production. These delicate paper sculptures were hand-fabricated by a local artist for the Alice in Wonderland sequence.

“Each figure was posed, photographed, and then repositioned in small increments and photographed again. When the series of photos is played as a continuous sequence – known as stop-motion animation – it produces the illusion of movement.”

The Imagineers’ desks have been updated to show work-in-progress for World of Color . On the left side you can see concept art for “Little Squirt” – a character in World of Color – with notes like: “A little squirt of imagination goes a long way”, and “Represents the childlike qualities of mischief and imagination.” (If you’ve seen the Steven Davison videos in this blog entry you’ll hear him talk about “Little Squirt”.) On the right side desk are notes on the programming for the Cheshire Cat: “A) Cheshire Cat’s face proj on rear left mist screen. C) Waterwhips create his body & tail. B) Alice falls into a bottle floating on a psychedelic sea of color. D) Grid fountains rise & fall to mirror the water on B) grids extend the sea forward.”

Disney has developed a new on-line version of Blue Sky Cellar – the web site www.DisneysCaliforniaAdventure.com went on-line on Thursday, July 16. The web site will be updated periodically, at least as often as Blue Sky Cellar itself (though I hope it will be more frequently than that!).

In the Screening Room there’s a map of what DCA will look like when the expansion is finished – I thought it might be interesting to show you the map and close-ups of the various areas that are changing.

I visited Disneyland and CA Adventure for the 50th in November 2005. I hope to visit again in December 2010 (to see holiday happenings) and hope to see most of the additions and changes to the park. I am looking forward to seeing World of Color most. From what I have been reading, December 2010 will be during the middle of all the construction. I hope it does not take away from my experience.
