Amazing Full-Day Grizzly Bear Viewing Tour from Vancouver Island

Amazing Full-Day Grizzly Bear Viewing Tour from Vancouver Island

Did you know you can go on an epic wildlife experience to see grizzly bears from Vancouver Island? We’ve wanted to take a fall vacation to see the grizzlies hunt for salmon for a long time. However, going all the way up to Alaska or to other go-to grizzly destinations in North America can get pricey. Luckily, we stumbled upon an amazing grizzly bear expedition tour that leaves from Campbell River on Vancouver Island in Canada.

Eagle Eye Adventures not only gives you a great chance to see local wildlife, but the team makes sure to provide an overall lovely day of exploring a remote part of British Columbia. This amazing tour is the perfect addition to an early autumn visit to the western coast of Canada. It is only about three hours north of Victoria and well worth the detour!

Here’s a summary of our wonderful tour with Eagle Eye Adventures into Toba Inlet to see grizzly bears …

Going on a Fall Grizzly Bear Viewing Tour in British Columbia

Since we were going on our tour in mid-October, at the very end of the grizzly bear viewing season, we knew we may not have the best luck for seeing bears. However, the area looked stunning so we decided to hope for the best and just go for it.

First Impressions of the Eagle Eye Adventures Grizzly Expedition

Our eight-hour Grizzly Bear Expedition with Eagle Eye Adventures left just as the sun was rising above the marina in Campbell River. We were bundled up and ready for a cold, windy, and rainy day. The team had been watching the wind the day prior to make sure it was safe to go out. But, luckily, the weather cooperated just enough and we were happy to know our two-hour boat ride out to remote Toba Inlet was in a covered vessel!

While the two-hour boat ride over to Toba Inlet on mainland Canada was surprisingly not very choppy due to going an alternate route, it rained almost the entire time. However, we did have a short break in the rain and were fortunate to stumble upon some humpback whales around that same time! We braved the cold air in the open area at the back of the boat for a few minutes before continuing on.

eagle eye adventure grizzly expedition education session

As we cruised out in the cozy little speed boat, Captain Jos shared interesting facts about the area and the grizzly bears we all hoped to see. He had hand-drew some amazing diagrams for the tour to help give a visual. Did you know grizzly bears’ claws are actually connected up to the iconic hump in their back? We had no idea! It was really nice to hear some unique information about the bears and not just a typical monologue that’s been said a thousand times. We also appreciated that they gave us some quiet time initially while we were all still waking up.

It was also great to be on a small tour – the boat only fit 12 guests max! Although there wasn’t much room to wander, the small speed boat made for a smoother and faster ride as well. There was even a small bathroom and an outdoor viewing area (which was lovely once the rain let up!).

Grizzly Bear Viewing with a First Nations Guide

Since the actual bear viewing part of the tour takes place on Klahoose First Nations land, we got a new guide after docking in Toba Inlet. However, the Eagle Eye Adventures team came along and helped to make sure the short walks to the viewing platforms were safe. After a quick bathroom break (in very clean porta potties) and a little snack of homemade muffins, we piled into a little bus to go look for bears on the Toba River!

british colmbia canada toba inlet wildlife tour

Our wonderful First Nations guide took us on a short drive over to the viewing platform they tend to have the most luck at. On the way, we saw a bear walking through the dense forest – yay, a good sign! While this viewing area facing the river is absolutely stunning (especially with moody clouds on the mountains!), we didn’t see any bears fishing for salmon at this first stop. So, after about twenty minutes, we moved on to a platform where we were invited to join another group that had spotted a big momma bear with an adorable, goofy baby.

british colmbia canada toba inlet grizzly tour first nations

It was a little intimidating to be walking toward a small wooden viewing platform that had a big grizzly bear walking in the river just beyond it. But the guides made us feel very safe! And seeing that little baby frolicking around, trying to catch salmon as big as him, was a travel highlight we’ll forever cherish.

I’ve always wanted to see grizzly bears in the wild but didn’t want to just stumble upon them on the trail. This tour allowed us to view these majestic creatures in a safe and comfortable way that let me relax and enjoy it! I felt like the team was really looking out for us and I trusted their instincts when it came to the bears.

Momma and baby moved on after 15 minutes or so when a big male grizzly appeared further down the river. Apparently, it’s common for males to kill the babies so that the females will need to mate again. Our guide said this particular male was older and unlikely to be aggressive, but momma wanted to be safe! We watched them saunter off up the river and into the forest before we moved on to the next platform.

grizzly photo by Jos Krijnen on October 2023 eagle eye adventures grizzly expedition

For another couple of hours, our First Nations guide took us to about four other blinds for more Chances to see grizzlies. Although we didn’t see any more, we saw multiple eagles and the clear river water made it possible to see the salmon swimming upstream.

We didn’t have the budget to bring along a giant telescopic lens, but Jos and Penny were both happy to share their great photos with us! (You can see more shots from the team on their Facebook and Instagram !) However, we did get an inexpensive monocular to get a closer look and would recommend bringing that or binoculars along, especially for spotting birds!

Waterfalls & Wildlife Encounters on the Water

Eventually, we got back on the boat expecting another rainy ride back. To our surprise, the weather cleared up a bit and we got to see even more wildlife. We spotted orcas, seal lions, and even a little black bear strolling along the coast!

orcas photo by Penny VanDyke on October 2023 eagle eye adventures grizzly expedition

Between sightings, we all sipped on hot coffee or tea and enjoyed the lovingly-made lunch the Eagle Eye team had brought along. I even had a specially made salad as the vegetarian option. They also were able to accommodate a gluten-free guest.

eagle eye adventures out of cambell river wildlife tour lunch

While the sightings were amazing, the BEST part of the boat tour was getting a very up-close view of one of the epic waterfalls streaming down the mountainside into the channel. Our fun captain even took the front of the boat into the waterfall. What a blast!

This tour was fantastic for so many reasons and we’ll never forget our grizzly encounter. We highly recommend Eagle Eye Adventures and look forward to checking out more of their tours in the future!

About Eagle Eye Adventures & Other Tours Available

Jos and Rentia Krynen founded Eagle Eye Adventures in 2000 to share their passion for the wildlife in this area with others. We were fortunate to have Jos as our captain and tour guide for our grizzly expedition. He is a marine biologist and avid photographer who is extremely passionate about sharing his beautiful chosen home with others. Of course, this means Jos has a ton of great information to share about the local wildlife and he was always happy to answer any random question our group came up with!

eagle eye adventures out of cambell river wildlife tour

The rest of the team is extremely passionate as well and we enjoyed having another team member, Penny, along for our tour. She is also an avid photographer and passionate wildlife enthusiast who actually moved to Campbell River after falling in love with the area. It is always so inspiring to meet people who love their home so much!

We also love that Eagle Eye Adventures works with the local First Nations people to offer an opportunity to see grizzly bears on the Toba River. They seem to have a great relationship and work really well together to provide a lovely tour experience.

Eagle Eye Adventures also offers multiple other wildlife tours! Jos shared that in 2024, they are planning to offer a variety of tours focused on seeing eagles, puffins, and sea otters, in addition to their spring bear and waterfall tour. Tours start back up in May and you can learn more and book your tour on their website .

Other Things to Do in Campbell River

Since Victoria and Tofino are usually the go-to destinations on Vancouver Island, you may be wondering what else there is to do before and after your tour in Campbell River. Luckily, this area is beautiful and has additional outdoor activities to enjoy! Plus, there is a great little brewpub and other dining options in town in addition to multiple grocery stores to stock up on snacks and other road trip must-haves.

We spent an extra day exploring Campbell River after our full-day tour with Eagle Eye Adventures and are so glad we did! Although we got soaked on our multiple walks around the area, there are two places we think you shouldn’t miss.

Quinsam River Hatchery

quinsam river hatchery campbell river vancouver island

Want the chance to see more bears? One of the top places to go to see the local black bears in Campbell River is the Quinsam River Hatchery since they come to try to catch the salmon at the river below. This is also a popular spot for fishing and it has a trail along the river. Just be aware that you will see (and smell!) a lot of dead fish along the trail since some fish die trying to swim upstream and some carcasses are left by the bears.

We didn’t see any bears while we were there, but it was a nice walk and an interesting place (despite the strong stench!).

Elk Falls Provincial Park & Suspension Bridge

campbell river vancouver island

Not far from town is a beautiful short hike to Elk Falls which features a suspension bridge. We loved exploring this area and were very impressed by the powerful waterfall. It was especially beautiful with the fall colors brightening up the moody, rainy vibe.

There were notes on the trail that a cougar had been sighted in this area recently, but the only wildlife encounter we had was with a curious deer – luckily! This is such a stunning area and should definitely make your must-see list as you explore before or after your tour in Campbell River.

campbell river vancouver island elk falls park

We absolutely loved our time in Campbell River – especially on our Grizzly Expedition – and highly recommend a visit. Even in the rain, we had a wonderful time and loved the slower pace, fall colors, and fewer tourists in autumn!

Went on a six hour whale watching tour with Jos (owner of Eagle Eye) as our guide. Had an amazing time exploring north and east of Campbell River. We saw Pacific White Sided Dolphins in a group of 150+, Sea Lions feeding on salmon, Humpback Whale mother and calf, black bear and incredible tidal whirlpools. Everday is different when you go out. Today's tour took us through Discovery Passage and around Sonora with dockside lunch on Stuart Island at Big Bay. Jos and Rentia are incredibly kind, courteous and experienced. Very safety oriented and well connected with the local guiding and business community. Their Ikaika enclosed boat was very clean, quiet, fast and accesible for all abilities. Highly recommend Eagle Eye. If your fortunate to get Jos, he'll share some great life stories, photography and deep ethic for protecting the Pacific coast, its wildlife, and our planet.

We had a great tour to see orcas and humpback whales and a gaggle of endless seals. Our skipper was very knowledgeable and we had his complete confidence. Weather was a bit on and off with rain but we were dressed in Helly Hansen suits complete with toques and goggles. A great afternoon with a stop in nearby Lund complete with a snack and drink. Friendly service from start to finish. Really what better way to enjoy the pacific coast than a full afternoon on the water.

We had a great time on our grizzly bear tour with guide Jason. Jason was very informative and laid back with our group. He frequently made sure that everyone in the party felt included and answered any questions that came up. Although it was predominantly a grizzly bear tour, we had the opportunity to see other wildlife, such as whales, seals, and porpoises, on our boat ride to the grizzly bear viewing area. The grizzly tour itself was amazing as well, where we had the opportunity to learn about the flora, fauna, and native culture of the area - and see a ton of bears of course! We will definitely be back for more fun next time we are visiting Vancouver Island.

I can't believe these guys don't have a review yet, they should. Keep in mind here that with this company you are heading out to view wildlife in their natural habitat, and sometimes the wildlife just doesn't cooperate. What you see or don't see cannot be controlled but with the experience of the staff and the communication amongst all the boaters out there, you are extremely likely to see some interesting stuff. I recently booked a 6 hour "whale watching" tour with my family. Booking online saves you 10% so that's a win right away. Finding them is a little difficult as there is no signage after you enter the mall but a quick call to them guided us the rest of the way. Everybody is supplied with a survival floatation suit with a toque and tinted goggles. We went on a calm day in July with a temperature of about 22 degrees. Jeans and a T-shirt were just fine for me under the suit but if you go in cooler or windier weather a sweater and gloves might be a good idea. The 12 passenger Zodiac boat has 4 rows of 3 across benches so there really isn't much moving around and you're mostly stuck in your seat. There is a toilet on board but it is tiny, awkward to get to and really only for "emergencies"; fortunately everybody in our group was able to wait until the lunch break. Your guide/pilot/captain is equipped with a quality camera and a 400+ zoom lens to take photos of your trip. You are welcome to bring your own camera but unless you're really close or have a similarly sized zoom it won't be much use. I didn't get wet/splashed at all on the tour but it was also a very calm day; bring your expensive camera at your own risk. Two Zodiac boats headed out together and we first toured the open water off the coast of Campbell River where we did technically see some Humpback whales. Unfortunately they were at least a couple hundred meters out and really were only black blobs on a blue/grey horizon. Regulations prevent the boats from getting closer than 100 meters so I'm not sure how much more we could've seen; here's where the big zoom lenses come in handy. We stopped for lunch on Stuart Island to the north east of Campbell River. Proper bathrooms are provided here but the tour doesn't always stop at this location. Lunch was supplied by Eagle Eye and packed on the boats in coolers. The lunch was fairly simple but quite substantial; mine included a hearty sandwich, apple, muffin, cookie, granola bar, water, juice box and snack size candy bar. When you register there are questions about dietary concerns and the staff seems very eager to meet the needs of vegetarians, allergies, food sensitivities or religious requirements. After lunch we headed north some more and this is where the trip was really worthwhile. First we saw some bald eagles and then a pod of dolphins. Our guide told us that like the whales, we are not permitted to approach the dolphins - but there's nothing preventing them from approaching us; and did they ever! The dolphins came to us as we cruised along, swimming alongside and leaping out of the water right beside the boat. Yes, you could almost touch them! At any given moment I could see about 15 dolphins so there was likely twice that many or more around. Leaning out over the bow of the boat you could see them skimming along right under the surface and under the bow. They seem smart enough to realize exactly where they are in relation to the boat and don't jump while under the bow and collide with us. An amazing experience! I quite enjoyed cruising in the boat experiencing nature from a different perspective. Because of the distance, the "whale watching" part was a little disappointing but the dolphins totally made up for things. Remember these are wild animals, you can't control them and every tour will be unique. The staff works hard to make sure you get value for your money. I had a great time and would recommend this company if you enjoy nature even a little bit.

We had a fantastic time today on our Whale Watching adventure! We were provided with survival suits to keep us warm. Ruben was a great skipper and took us directly to a family of Orcas. We watched them for a while then he took us to see sea lions and seals then we zipped across the sound directly to humpback whales. We spent plenty of time watching the different types of wildlife and Ruben shared insight and information as it became available. The Zodiac ride was fun, the suits kept us warm, and we had an opportunity to step off the boat on land in Lund for a washroom break. All in all a fantastic trip we would recommend and in our opinion you should say you want Ruben as your captain as he was great!

Perhaps it was too early in the year but I would expect them not to book or mention that if there is little chance of seeing whales. We saw none but a few seals and porpoises, lots of eagles. The highlight of the 6 hour trip was lunch. The crew was good but there should be a performance guarantee and a partial refund when they do not deliver the focus of their business.

You as well as we know that we can not predict the wildlife. It’s all in mother nature’s hands, we are not operating in a zoo, that makes our tours unique. We never know what we are going to see. Thanks.

  • IneKie 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Grizzly Bear Adventure day was wonderfull experience We booked our trip 6 days in advance for 2 adults. We signed some waivers before start of the trip. We had a nice sunny warm day in September without rain and enjoyed this trip very much because we were so lucky to see so many animals. On the way to Toba River we listened to the information Jos gave us about (grizzly) bears and were treated a snack (muffin) and drinks. On the main land we are welcomed by the Klahoose and their bus. The bus drove us to the watch tower(s) standing along the river bed at different places. If there were no sightings of animals for a while, it is checked with the other towers if grizzlies are sighted at one of the other towers and the bus takes you there. I did not notice the other towers while in one of them. So they are not next to each other. We stayed with our group of max 12 persons together in the bus and tower. We spent at least 3 hours at the towers and sighted 12 different grizzly bears including mothers with cubs. The adult bears feasted on the salmon which are in the river and took the time to demonstrate how to eat a salmon as a bear. Wonderful sight which I will not forget. The complete group was enthusiastic and very impressed with the experience. We also viewed 3 turkey vultures. In the afternoon the bus drove us back to the boat and (chilled) lunches were available on board together with drinks. We stopped shortly at a waterfall and also had the pleasure to see sea lions, whales, porpoise and last but not least orcas. Jos specially sailed in the direction of orca's which are sighted by other boats. Actually we were on our way back to the marina of Campbell River. Ethel was also on board to help out and learn about this trip and she was a pleasant guide as well. I would recommend this trip to everyone who enjoys nature and wildlife and maybe you feel as lucky as we did. On our trip we were with 5 couples, 4 Dutch and 1 mixed (South Africa and UK?) and another male and female. Read more Written October 24, 2022

Eagle Eye Adventures

From April 1st until mid-October, Eagle Eye Adventures Tours offers Whale Watching, Ocean rapids/Wildlife tours and of course our magnificent Grizzly Bear Expeditions.

Your adventure starts at Campbell River’s Discovery Harbour Marina. Come and explore the beautiful central coast of British Columbia – one of the best places in the world to observe whales, grizzly bears, and other wildlife.

Eagle Eye Adventures Tours have been named as one of the top 2 best things to do in Canada by European travel agencies. Our tours are a terrific base for photography and viewing diverse wildlife. With a maximum of 12 guests on each tour, we can personalize your wilderness adventure, and help you put those animals on your life list.

From right in Campbell River, you can hop onto one of our boats and head out on the waters of Johnstone Strait, and Desolation Sound, off the Discovery Islands, and sometimes even the Sunshine Coast to watch a pod of Orcas or to witness a Humpback Whale breaching the surface. Porpoises and Dolphins can often be seen playing in the wake of our boats.

What we love about the wilderness here is that it is still wild!

Our straights and open waterways are what we’re famous for. The unique currents caused by ebbing and flooding tides support a food chain that starts with phytoplankton up through herring, salmon, dolphins, seals, orcas and humpback whales. On land, you can find cinnamon, black, and grizzly bears, deer, elk, cougar, wolves, and of course eagles, watching you as you watch them.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
