Whether you are turning four or 40 – birthdays are special. And in recent years, birthdays have also meant traveling for our family – in particular, cruises.

Last year, we celebrated Molly’s 4th birthday on a cruise and I turned another year older while sailing on the Carnival Breeze . They were each memorable birthdays that my family will always cherish.

From cakes to special gifts to decorating your stateroom – there’s nothing better than sailing the seas for your special day.

Here’s a look at some of the ways my family and I celebrated —

Do what I did and treat yourself to a little pampering with a relaxing spa treatment. It was so nice to take a break and truly focus on myself during our cruise. Sure, there’s always the  adults-only Serenity deck  to unwind, but there’s nothing better than a hot stone massage while overlooking the seas. It was the ultimate birthday gift to myself!

If food is more your idea of pampering, make reservations at the ship’s Steakhouse . You can’t go wrong with surf & turf, paired with a big, slice of cheesecake for dessert. It’s an elegant evening and the great way to make wishes for another birthday year.

And speaking of food… For Molly’s birthday, we stopped by the ship’s  Cherry on Top  candy store and order her a birthday cake to be delivered at dinner the next night in the dining room. While we were there, we let the girls fill up their own candy bags with treats – gummies, chocolates and tons of sugar!

I’ll never forget when our servers surprised Molly at dinner by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and presenting her with a cake. It was such a fun moment and we loved making friends with our table neighbors when we shared cake with everyone.

Make It A Surprise 

One thing I really wished I had done was purchase a  cabin decorations package  before our sailing. Depending on the package, your steward will decorate your stateroom with streamers, banners and let everyone know that it is your birthday by decorating the outside of your door.

You can even order chocolate covered strawberries (a big hit with Molly), fruit baskets and for the kiddos – surprise them with a gift bag complete with Dr. Seuss gifts including books, backpacks and even a great beach towel too – all delivered right to your stateroom.

Plan a getaway

And speaking of Dr. Seuss – the  Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast with The Cat in the Hat and Friends  is a fun way to celebrate a birthday. With French toast covered in cereal, colorful pancakes and meeting the characters from the books, this special breakfast is always a big hit with my girls.

The decor definitely gets you in the ‘party’ mood and with the songs and dancing – it’s the perfect way to celebrate your little one’s big day.

There are so many fun ways to make your birthday unique when sailing with Carnival Cruise Line. Since we’ve celebrated Molly’s and my birthdays on cruises, my husband and Maggie have been asking when we are going to sail for their birthday celebrations. Looks like I better get to planning again soon!

Tips for celebrating birthdays on Disney Cruise Line ships

As you read this, my family and I are (finally) sailing on the Disney Dream somewhere in the Bahamas. As you can imagine, we have been counting the days and anticipating the fun for months!

** First, soon after making our reservations, I requested that Disney Cruise Line note in our reservation that we are celebrating the kids’ birthdays. I was asked which night we would like to celebrate at dinner because our servers will bring each child a complimentary dessert that is not on the regular menu, and the presentation usually includes the traditional singing. It’s a fun way to make birthdays special. (Actual birthday cakes can be ordered ahead of time through Disney Cruise Line for an additional charge.)

** At Port Canaveral, we asked for complimentary Disney Cruise Line buttons when we checked in. (You can also go to Guest Relations on the ship.) Don’t underestimate these buttons: My kids love wearing them because cast members and even guests will say “Happy Birthday” all day long. Plus, you never know when some extra pixie dust may be sprinkled for special occasions!

** Once we got into our stateroom, I decorated the door with our family magnets. I have updated our collection to include birthday greetings for each child. Plus, I made a personalized birthday sign to hang from the Fish Extender hook next to the door.

** For the first time, I also ordered one of the room-decorating packages from Disney Cruise Line. There is a birthday package, but I opted for the Halloween package because it has more components, including some things that will make nice souvenirs for the kids. And, after all, we are sailing on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise. The package consists of five dangling signs, a window cling, a large magnet, a pillow and a small black tree that lights up. On the card, I wrote, “Happy Spooky Birthday!” Originally, I had planned to bring items to decorate the stateroom myself, but then I learned that adhering items has to be done with magnets (just like stateroom doors) to prevent damage or you risk a $100 fine. While that still was possible if I wanted to attach magnets to everything, I opted to go with the easier route. Plus, the room is decorated upon arrival, which is a great surprise.

** We allowed each child to choose one extra activity during the cruise. My daughter wanted to go to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for the Celebration Package, which comes with a tutu and T-shirt and is a little more grown-up than a princess dress for a 12-year-old. My chose riding on a jet ski with his dad at Castaway Cay. Both kids picked something they have never done on a Disney cruise, so I know they are excited.

** Finally, we gave each child a small bag of cruise-themed goodies the day before we sailed. I ordered reusable Disney Cruise Line tote bags and picture frames from the Shop Disney Parks app. (Cruise merchandise also is available through DisneyStore.com.) I made Halloween on the High Seas journals by printing pages at home and having them bound at an office-supply store. I also ordered a personalized design through an Etsy shop to create magnets for the Castaway Cay 5K, which we plan to run for the first time. (I haven’t heard of official 5K magnets being sold on the island.) Because we are Walt Disney World annual passholders and I am in the parks frequently, I purchased some mystery pin packs to give the kids starter pins to trade on the ship. And each child received a certificate for money they can spend on souvenirs.

This was great to read with nice ideas. We will be celebrating my son’s 18th birthday on our next voyage! It’s a big Birthday and want it to be extra special, as if just celebrating a birthday aboard the ship isn’t special enough. I read you can order a cake from sweet treats on the Fantasy. Will have to look into that. and of course decorate stateroom. Thanks for article!

We celebrated my son’s 10th birthday at WDW. We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge for our first visit as a family. That morning he put his “birthday pin” on and we took the bus service to Epcot. On the bus, our driver saw his pin and made a wonderful deal out of it. He had everyone on the bus sing “happy birthday” to him and at every stop the person entering the bus would walk up to him and say “happy birthday” before they could sit down. When we arrived he had a pirate bandana that he gave my son. We got to Epcot early for a character breakfast at Hollywood and Vine where they gave him a card signed by all the characters. He went to Jedi Training after that. We rode a few rides and headed back to the hotel. My husband took him to the arcade and I decorated his bed with balloons and streamers. I also set up a couple of toys we bought for him at the hotel shop.

We had such a good time that we promised our daughter to go on her 10th birthday too. So we are leaving on a land and sea trip this May!

Let the cruise line know

Advise the cruise line ahead of time that you or a travel partner is celebrating a birthday on the cruise ship. Often they will acknowledge it at dinner in the main dining room by a special dessert and/or singing happy birthday.

Order a cruise birthday package

Each cruise line offers something a little different. Check out their website, under in-room gifts or something similar. Most packages include cabin decorations along with a cake and/or souvenir.

These packages can be on the pricey side, but are a fun way to celebrate a special occasion, especially if it is a surprise for someone else.

Decorate yourself

This is what I did for my daughter’s 18th birthday cruise. I bought decorations from the dollar store and some magnetic hooks .

Splurge and book a stateroom you wouldn’t normally book, such as a balcony, suite, or specialty cabin. Some cruise lines have specialty staterooms like spa cabins or exclusive area rooms (ex/ Carnival’s Havana staterooms or NCL’s Haven staterooms ).

Can I arrange for a special occasion or celebration cake?

We offer Birthday, Anniversary and Special Occasion Cakes fleet-wide for a nominal fee. Purchase a celebration cake prior to cruising here . 

There are two types of cakes available: chocolate sponge cake with chocolate butter cream or vanilla sponge cake with vanilla butter cream, both are decorated with flowers on the left side of the cake. These cakes are 6" round and serve 2-10 people. The name (or names) will be written on the cake with a candle placed on top. A minimum of 6 hours advance notice is required. All cakes that are ordered by 12 noon will be served that evening in the main dining room.

The cake will be charged to your Seapass® card or credit card upon request at time of ordering the cake onboard the ship.

If you don't want to purchase a whole cake, just tell your Main Dining Room waiter about the special occasion and who it's for. Our waiters will sing a birthday / anniversary song - with a slice of cake (based on the daily cake offerings for that evening) and a candle prior to serving you the dinner dessert, free of charge.
