PGA Championship 2024: Here's the full field competing at Valhalla
We’re a week away from the start of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., and the full field for the second men’s major of the year is almost complete.
Sixteen past champions are listed among the field to compete. Among them is Brooks Koepka, winner a year ago at Oak Hill when he shot a closing 67 to outpace Viktor Hovland and win the Wanamaker Trophy for the third time in his career. Koepka is also coming with momentum after winning his fourth career LIV event last week in Singapore.
Also listed in the field is Tiger Woods. A four-time PGA winner, including memorably in a playoff over Bob May at Valhalla in 2000, Woods has not officially announced if he will be playing or not. That said, while promoting his new clothing line Sun Day Red earlier in the month, he did indicate his hope to compete in the three remaining majors.
Woods did not compete at last year’s PGA after undergoing fusion surgery on his right ankle a month earlier. He has made only two starts in PGA Tour events since the surgery: the Genesis Invitational in February, where he withdrew because of the flu during the second round, and the Masters last month, where he made his record-breaking 24th straight cut at Augusta while finishing 60th. His most recent PGA Championship start was 2022, where he made the cut at Southern Hills but withdrew after the third round.
Much of the qualifying criteria closed on Monday, and the PGA of America released the full field for the 105th championship on Tuesday. Koepka was among nine LIV golfers who were already exempt or announced as in the field, along with past PGA champions Phil Mickelson and Martin Kaymer. Seven other LIV golfers also qualified , either thanks to the position on the PGA Championship points list or via special invitation.
Two remaining spots open should the winners of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship and Myrtle Beach Classic on the PGA Tour not already be in the PGA Championship field.

Big names show up, a favorable free drop highlight a busy thursday at 2024 wells fargo championship, share this article.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of the main criticisms the PGA Tour has faced so far this 2024 season with regard to its high-profile signature events has been the lack of stars at the top of the leaderboard in the early rounds.
The big players showed out early and often during the first round of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club, as did a handful of lesser-known names who earned their way into the elevated tournament that offers up a $20 million purse.
From the likes of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Jason Day all in the top five to a controversial ruling and impressive performances from sponsor exemption players, here’s what you missed from a busy (and wet) opening round of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.
Wells Fargo: Friday tee times
Schauffele jumps out to early lead (and gets a favorable rules decision)

Xander Schauffele had just one blemish on a near-perfect scorecard in Thursday’s first round as the 30-year-old fired a 7-under 64 to take an early three-shot lead after the opening 18 holes.
Starting on the back nine, Schauffele birdied five of his first eight holes before he made his lone bogey of the round on the par-4 18th. After the turn to the front nine he rode the par train for Nos. 1- 6 before he made an impressive eagle on the par-5 7th and birdie on the par-4 9th holes.
Schauffele is winless this season but does have seven top-10 finishes under his belt. Earlier in the week he addressed the state of his game saying “a little bit of everything” has been working but he hasn’t “really been able to get everything together at once.”
Today he was able to piece it all together, and he also benefitted from a free drop despite hitting his ball into a penalty area on the par-4 8th hole. More on that here .
A tough start to Wyndham Clark's title defense

Wyndham Clark jumpstarted his breakout year on Tour here at Quail Hollow last year with his first-ever PGA Tour win, but the world No. 3’s title defense got off to a shaky start as Clark signed for a 2-over 73 on Thursday. He was one of 26 players that finished over par on a soggy course that was hampered by rain on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
After starting on No. 10, Clark had a psycho scorecard (shoutout Shane Bacon) early in the round as he made birdie on No. 10, back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 and three straight birdies on Nos. 13-15. He’s off the pace early, but there’s still plenty of time to climb back into contention, not to mention there’s no cut in the Tour’s sixth signature event of the season.
New look No. 16 has same results

The new tee box on the par-4 16th was the talk of the town before the start of the tournament as Quail Hollow made the second-hardest hole on the property all the more challenging (in theory).
No. 16 had a scoring average of 4.27 last year, and after moving the tee back 20 yards to bring the scorecard yardage to 529 yards, Thursday’s scoring average came in at 4.21. Just three birdies were made to go along with 49 pars, 15 bogeys and one double bogey.
“The new tee on 16 is a bear,” said Webb Simpson, a Quail Hollow member since 2011 and resident since 2014, before the tournament began. “The question before for me was can I ever carry the bunker and I only could downwind. Now the bunker’s not really even in play.”
“It definitely makes that second shot really unique,” Max Homa said. “That’s a tough second shot, so I think that’s fun to — I think it is one of those rare positive changes of moving a tee that far back and actually continuing to give the long guys an advantage but kind of making them hit into a similar width fairway that the rest of us are.”
As Quail Hollow prepares to host next year’s PGA Championship, a new tee was also added to the par-3 13th to add 10 yards, greens were resurfaced with Tif Eagle Bermudagrass and 12 putting surfaces saw slopes get softened to offer better hole locations at higher green speeds. In addition to the new tees and greens, bunkers were also rebuilt with new drainage, liners and sand.
Rory McIlroy was a big fan of the Tom Brady roast
Telling someone else’s joke usually doesn’t go well, especially when you fumble the punchline, but that didn’t stop McIlroy from re-hashing one of Nikki Glaser’s many zingers at Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady.
Sounds like @McIlroyRory was a big fan of the @TomBrady roast 😂 pic.twitter.com/Ji8Wjz8275 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 9, 2024
Oh yeah, he’s also part of a seven-person subcommittee that will be negotiating with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
How did the sponsor exemptions fare?

PGA Tour policy board member Webb Simpson defended his fourth sponsor exemption to the Tour’s sixth big-money signature event of the season earlier in the week before the tournament and backed up his argument with his play on Thursday. The Quail Hollow member rolled out of his own bed on Thursday morning and shot a 1-under 70 to sit T-16 after the opening 18 holes.
His fellow sponsor invites Matt Kuchar (69, T-12), Adam Scott (71, T-31) and Gary Woodland (70, T-16) also showed up to play. For all the debate on the players receiving invites (and if invites should even be allowed for signature events), the four in the field this week have backed up their selection so far.

LIV Golf players list: Everyone who has quit PGA Tour and DP World Tour to play in the 2023 series
Cameron smith, dustin johnson and phil mickelson are among other players to have pledged their commitment to liv golf.
When the highly contentious LIV Invitational Series resumes in 2024, it will boast reigning Masters champion and world No 3-ranked Jon Rahm as the latest of golf’s most famous players who have signed up to play .
Rahm , a four-time winner on the 2023 PGA Tour, member of Europe’s Ryder Cup -winning team and prior critic of the LIV format , joins the league bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in a deal reportedly worth up to £450m.
Rumours had begun to swirl over the Spaniard’s future, including when he was notably absent from the line-up of golfers committed to the PGA Tour’s American Express stop in January, as well as withdrawing from the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy -backed TGL league’s inaugural season last month.
And despite admitting his decision to join LIV was a “risk” in terms of his future participation in the Ryder Cup – the 29-year-old will need to remain a member of the DP World Tour to be eligible for the biennial USA vs Europe showdown – Rahm told Fox News : “Things have changed a lot in the game of golf over the past two years and I’ve seen the growth of LIV Golf and the innovation.
“That’s why I’m here today. This decision was made for many reasons and what I thought was best for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great deal.”
The 2024 LIV Golf schedule will feature 14 stops, including new events in Las Vegas, Houston and Nashville.
2024 LIV Golf Schedule 2-4 February: LIV Mayakoba — El Cameleon Country Club 8-10 February : LIV Las Vegas — Las Vegas Country Club 1-3 March: LIV Saudi Arabia — TBD 8-10 March: LIV Hong Kong — Hong Kong Golf Club 5-7 April: LIV “USA” — Location and course TBD 26-28 April: LIV Adelaide — The Grange Golf Club 3-5 May: LIV Singapore — The Serapong Golf Club 7-9 June: LIV Houston — The Golf Club of Houston 21-23 June: LIV Nashville — The Grove Golf Club 12-14 July: LIV Andalucia — Real Club Valderrama 25-28 July: LIV UK: Staffordshire — JCB Golf and Country Club 16-19 August: LIV Greenbrier — The Old White Course at the Greenbrier TBD: LIV Golf Individual Championships TBD: LIV Golf Team Championships.
Who played in the 2023 LIV Golf series and how did it work?
The financial package put forward by LIV Golf seduced Dustin Johnson , Lee Westwood , and Sergio Garcia from the get-go last year, with Phil Mickelson, Ian Poulter and plenty of others signing up soon after.
Mickelson was reportedly paid $200m (£159m) just for turning up, while Johnson, the top-ranked player to have joined so far, earning $150m (£119m). Johnson announced his resignation from the PGA Tour in order to concentrate fully on the new tournament fronted by former world No 1 Greg Norman, but the PGA has since suspended all players to have made the switch.
Besides the eye-watering signing-on-fees, the prize money on offer is staggering. There is a $25m (£19.9m) purse to be split between the 48 players per tournament in the eight-event series, with the winner pocketing $4m (£3.2m) and the loser earning $120k (£95k).
More from Golf
The format is also very different from traditional majors. There are 54 rather than 72 holes for a start – “LIV” is 54 in Roman numerals – there is a “shotgun” start where players tee off at the same time, and golfers are grouped into teams of four.
Johnson is captain of the “4 Aces”, Mickelson is leading the “Hy Flyers” and Poulter is affiliated to “Majesticks”.
The first 2022 tournament was held in England, with subsequent events taking place in Portland, Bedminster, Boston, Chicago, Bangkok, Jeddah and Miami.
In the build-up, players faced questions about “sportswashing” and whether Saudi Arabia is seeking to deflect attention from its human rights record by investing so heavily in the sport. Mickelson previously called the Saudis “scary motherf**kers” before backtracking.
“I don’t condone human rights violations at all,” he said. “I’m certainly aware of what has happened with Jamal Khashoggi and I think it’s terrible. I have also seen the good that the game of golf has done throughout history and I believe LIV Golf is going to do a lot of good for the game as well.”
Graeme McDowell said “we’re not politicians, we’re professional golfers,” in regards to the country’s human rights record and Talor Gooch responded “I’m a golfer, I’m not that smart”. Poulter and Westwood both said they would not answer “hypothetical questions” when asked whether they would have played in a tournament held by Vladimir Putin or in South Africa during Apartheid.
Four-time major winner Brooks Koepka, former US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau and ex-Masters champion Patrick Reed signed up to the breakaway competition after the first event, while Paul Casey was also confirmed in early July.
Open champion Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann were then among a fresh wave of players unveiled by LIV Golf.
The 2023 series kicked off in Mayakoba in February, followed by tournaments in Tucson, Orlando, Adelaide, Singapore, Tulsa, DC, Valderrama, London, Greenbrier, Bedminster, Chicago, Miami and Jeddah.
2023 LIV Golf players list A-Z
Here are all 48 players who competed in the 14-event series in 2023.
There were 12 teams in total, with 13 major champions in the field, 16 nations represented, and a combined 125 Ryder Cup appearances.
Four players – Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka and Lee Westwood – have held the title of world No 1. Scroll down for the teams and more analysis.

Analysis: LIV Invitational is morally bankrupt and won’t revitalise golf
By Matt Butler
The name is quite clever: LIV. In Roman numerals it is 54 and the players in this new incarnation of golf kicking off in the exotic locale of Hemel Hempstead will play that many holes. Neat, huh?
Of course, you might say that a new sporting franchise bolstered by limitless petrodollars would be expected to be creative with its branding.
But the new kid in town is a sign that golf is in desperate need of some love. Whether that love comes from a despotic regime with a dreadful record on human rights is something for Phil Mickelson , Dustin Johnson , Lee Westwood and, err, James Piot to ponder as they chase a ball around a course for a share of 20 mill a tournament.
Related Stories
And if you put aside the ickiness of the Saudi regime behind Jamal Khashoggi ’s killers providing the lipstick and mascara to the game, the concept of a quickfire bunch of tournaments with a set season and eight-figure sums of cash riding on each one sounds intriguing – even if the reason why players joined appears to be all about the money. Not that cold hard cash as a motivator is news, especially in the world of golf.
The rules are thus: everyone tees off at once. It is called a shotgun start, which sounds a little violent, given the paymasters, but I guess bonesaw start would have been too much. Twelve teams of four play in a match-play format, with individual members also competing in a strokeplay competition. There is no cut to miss. So far, so mildly diverting.
However, toe-curlingly twee “Camden Market-style” stalls, a Craig David and Jessie J gig and Sporty Spice on the decks post-match does not sound like much of an answer to the organiser’s promise to “supercharge” golf.

The field is out for next week’s PGA Championship, and as expected the top 100 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are all on the list.
Actually, the top 103 in the world are in the 156-player field for Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., as well as a couple of intriguing names at No. 644 and No. 801 in the world.
No. 801 is Tiger Woods, the four-time PGA champion who won in 2000 at Valhalla in a thrilling playoff over Bob May. Woods set the consecutive-cuts-made record last month at the Masters before fading on the weekend to 60th, but left Augusta National optimistic for the rest of the majors this season. He accepted a special exemption to the U.S. Open last week.
No. 644 is LIV Golf’s Talor Gooch, who confirmed his special exemption from the PGA of America on Monday via his social media. His spot appears to underline the PGA of America’s desire to have the strongest possible field in its major; Gooch was a three-time winner and LIV Golf’s player of the year in 2023.
LIV Golf’s David Puig and Dean Burmester also received exemptions. Puig has won twice on the Asian Tour in the last seven months and is 106th in the world, while Burmester won back-to-back DP World tour events to end 2023 and won on LIV last month in Miami.
There are 15 LIV golfers in the field. Brooks Koepka is the defending PGA champion, a three-time PGA winner overall and coming in off a win last week in Singapore. Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith are other past major champions from LIV Golf in the field.
Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 who won last month at the Masters, is scheduled to compete but is on baby watch at home with wife Meredith. He is skipping this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, a signature event on the PGA Tour.
As usual, the field also includes 20 PGA professionals who qualified via the annual PGA Professional Championship. The total PGA professional count is 21, as Michael Block returns after a T15 finish last year at Oak Hill which earned him a spot at Valhalla.
The winners of this week’s Wells Fargo and Myrtle Beach Classic on the PGA Tour will receive spots in the field if they’re not in already.
Below is the full field for the the PGA Championship, which is May 16-19.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from proven golf model that has nailed 11 majors
Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.
Brooks Koepka became just the sixth player to win the PGA Championship three times following his victory at Oak Hill in 2023. Koepka has now won five major championships and will look to add another to his impressive resume when the 2024 PGA Championship tees off from Valhalla Golf Club on Thursday, May 16. Koepka is the last golfer to successfully defend his title at a major championship, winning the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019. According to the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds, Koepka is 12-1 to repeat.
Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is the 3-1 favorite in the 2024 PGA Championship field, followed by Jon Rahm (10-1), Koepka (12-1), Rory McIlroy (12-1) and Ludvig Aberg (12-1) on the PGA odds board. Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine through a CBS Sports account .
Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Join SportsLine now through a CBS Sports account to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.
After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.
Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas has had plenty of success at the PGA Championship in his career. His two major victories came at the PGA Championship and he'll have the backing of the crowd at Valhalla. Thomas is a Louisville native and will enter the second major of the year in strong form.
The 31-year-old secured a fifth-place finish at the RBC Heritage in April and finished 12th or better in five of his first nine starts on tour this season. Given his current PGA Championship odds 2024 and past performances at majors, the model projects strong value in including Thomas in your 2024 PGA Championship bets. See who else to pick by joining SportsLine here through a CBS Sports account .
How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds longer than 20-1 to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks by joining SportsLine here through a CBS Sports account .
Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then join SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard through a CBS Sports account, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .
