To be able to brainstorm, dream, flush out ideas and ultimately pull it off with Sloane at the helm… this one will be one of my favorite videos forever. I hope it makes you smile.”

Last night, Macklemore was the speaking guest on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon [watch interview HERE ] and will be performing a new track titled ‘Tail Lights’ – taken from his latest album – next week on Tuesday, March 7. This morning, Macklemore will be performing ‘No Bad Days’ live on NBC’s The Today Show.

BEN is Mackemore’s highly anticipated third studio album. “ I’ve always wanted to make an album called Ben ,” he shares. “There’s something about a self-titled record. It has an air of voyeurism. I’m letting people in, but in a way that I hadn’t felt 100% comfortable about allowing before. I am now though.” hroughout 2020, he found himself with a rare pocket of time for introspection during the Global Pandemic—something not typically afforded to a father of three and touring musician…

“ I did experience a level of reflection I don’t think I’ve been able to truly tap into in the past,” he affirms. “This mandatory pause and the time created a level of intimacy that might not have been there if the world had continued to operate how it was.”

Joined by a tightknit group of collaborators such as Budo, Tyler Dox, and Experience, he ventured to the island multiple times for focused five-day trips. “ I’ve recorded in nature before, but I never had the opportunity to do so with no ending in sight,” he reveals. “We were removed from all external distractions. It just flowed. The idea was, ‘Let’s just make art, because we get to—not because we have to . Let’s capture that magic’ .” Harnessing this magic, Macklemore heralded the album throughout 2022 and 2023 with fan favorites; ‘ HEROES’ featuring the legendary DJ Premier, ‘CHANT’ ft Tones and I, ‘FAITHFUL’ Ft. NLE Choppa and ‘Maniac’ Ft Windser.

On “ HEROES” [feat. DJ Premier ], a head-nodding beat laced with horn samples, a thick bass line, police sirens, and scratching sets the pace, Macklemore tells his story in dynamic, yet nostalgic bars, “Wanted a perm like DJ Quik, my mama said, ‘Ben, are you aware your hair is way too thin?’ But in my mind I was junior high Iceberg Slim . ” “I was raised by nineties boom-bap hip-hop,” he goes on. “It inspired me more than any other era. It was pivotal for me coming of age as a 15-year-old and figuring out who I was. ‘Heroes’ is the story of growing up in the late nineties, where hip-hop was at, where skateboarding was at, and where graffiti culture was at. It had a massive impact on where I ended up in my life. Premier is one of my favorite producers of all-time too. He had a massive influence on me as an artist and as a person. You know it’s him right away.”

Then, there’s the single “ NO BAD DAYS” [feat. Collett ]. Upbeat guitar ushers Collett’s hook along at full speed as Macklemore counters in a catchy call-and-response. He assures, “Don’t gotta say goodbye, if you never wake up . ” “It’s just a vibe,” he observes. “It’s one of those songs you put on in the car, and you’re immediately in a better mood. I love making a record that I can’t wait to bump in the whip when it hits 70 degrees.”

Elsewhere, “DAY YOU DIE” [feat. Sarah Barthel of Phantogram ] hinges on a steady beat punctuated by palm-muted guitar. Macklemore and Sarah ponder mortality with unabashed honesty, repeating “We all gone die . ” Vocal phenom LIVINGSTON lends his powerhouse pipes to “ SORRY, ” while the closer “ Tail Lights ” blinks through the haze with a sign of life encoded in the lyrics. “In recovery, there’s this idea where you’re essentially following your sponsor’s tail lights,” he reveals. “When I get someone to sponsor, they’ll follow my tail lights. Whose tail lights are we really following through life? It’s definitely the more introspective side of the album. What did I learn in the last four years of making this? What matters still?”

Once you hear BEN , you’ll never look at Macklemore the same way. “ Songwriting is the glue for my entire career,” he leaves off. “If you’re not writing words that resonate, the music isn’t going to have depth, weight, or longevity. I’m not trying to follow. On this album, I’m being authentic to who I am. I’m reflecting on where I am in life. Turns out, I’ve learned a lot.”

Teaching us the value of thrift shopping, rapper Macklemore aka Ben Haggerty (born 19 June 1983) from Washington, US whose collaborative outfit with producer Ryan Lewis made them one of the hottest musical acts of 2014.

Before assuming the alias Macklemore, as a child Haggerty took an interest in hip-hop at six years old listening to the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Nas and Talib Kwali on the radio. Stepping up to the plate at 14, Haggerty began writing his own rap material largely influenced by the East Coast underground hip-hop scene emergent in the 90’s. With his eyes set on using his music to help forge relationships with younger communities, Haggerty became involved with music workshops for the project “Gateways for Incarcerated Youth”.

Initially performing under the moniker Professor Macklemore, he released his debut EP “Open Your Eyes” in 2000. Five years later and now simply now as Macklemore, he released his debut full length “The Language of My World”. Things all changed when Macklemore met producer Ryan Lewis a year later, who initially worked as Macklemore’s photographer. Forging a strong friendship, it wasn’t long before Lewis turned to producing a couple of Macklemore’s tracks. In 2009 the duo made the collaboration more of a permanent fixture, now known as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis they went on to release the “VS” EP later that year and the “The VS. Redux” (2010) which went straight to number seven on the iTunes hip-hop chart.

It was the 2012 “The Heist” album from the duo which truly sent them into the stratosphere, debuting at number two in the US charts, certifying platinum and clinching the top five chart positions in: Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The album featured the number one singles “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us Down” commandeering charts all over the globe and turning them into a worldwide sensation. Later that year, the pair embarked on “The Heist World Tour”.

At the 2014 Grammys, the duo cleaned up taking four awards including: Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap song. There’s no stopping Macklemore as he and Ryan Lewis are set upon taking over the globe with a legion of fans providing the ultimate backbone.

Live reviews

LIVE REVIEW Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, 2 pieces that fit perfectly together,2 pieces that make awesome music, good beats and amazing lyrics. Terrible leopard print fur-lined coats and black Spanish cowboys hats were everywhere. Young or old, they entertain their audience of all ages. Macklemore, aka Ben Haggerty, was born to be on stage. He was born to share his story of getting off drugs and alcohol and learning to respect that gay or not , we all deserve some respect for who we are and what we do. In between some songs, he had the time to tell and teach us about the important things in life, not like most other rappers, who preach about marijuana legalization. During songs like 'Thrift shop', 'Can't hold us' or 'white walls' everybody literally got crazy! The energy he has to perform those songs and to sing them with such an enthousiasm was unbelievable. With a spectacular concert like 'The Heist' you wont get the chance to sit down and check your facebook. You have to listen to the powerfull words that can mean the world to some people. If you want to go to a concert that tells a story or if you want to listen to music that can make you change your opinion about stuff such as alcohol, money or gay marriage, Macklemore tells his story to everybody through his awesome music.

My daughter bought me tickets for the Dec23rd show at Key Arena Seattle. I am not a rap fan by any means, but I do like several artists, and Macklemore is one of them. His lead up bands were absolutely god awful, but when he came on stage the place exploded. He went through all of his hits, and definitely is a master showman. Unexpectedly coming out of the rafters as Willy Wonka was awesome. Good fire show, and lots of confetti and fireworks. Very good show.

THIS WAS FUCKING AWESOME! It was the best night of me life! It was a big party and the show was amazing. Macklemore is just a great, inspiring and funny guy. He has songs with deep lyrics but also songs that you just want to sing along with really loud (that’s why I didn’t have a voice anymore the next morning). I will definitely see him next time he is in Holland again!

Thanks Macklemore

The most amazing experience ever!!! the opening acts were great and he was even better in person! the venue was very hot and everyone was sweating so much, and the seats were very small as they were a long bench, but everyone was standing up so it didn’t really matter. aside from the venue the show was amazing and i would definitely go again!!!

Best concert that I have ever attended. The show was packed full of great music. There was only some slight problems. There was to much time between the cover acts. Other than that, Macklemore put on a amazing show, and didn’t let the crowd down one bit!

This was an amazing show! I love Macklemore and it completely exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait to see him again. The fire was really cool and also when he came out on a rope as willy wonka. The little kids dancing were so cute. It was a great show

The concert of Macklemore was dope. He performed really well and made a real show of it. It was lots of fun. The lockers for your bags were a little expensive (€5.00). But apart from that it was amazing!

Macklemore’s sold-out show celebrates 2023 album, love for Seattle

Concert review.

Like a conquering hero, Seattle-born rapper Macklemore made a triumphant return home with a sold-out show at Climate Pledge Arena Thursday night after spending much of the year touring the United States and Europe in support of his 2023 album “BEN.”

Macklemore, born Benjamin Haggerty, still lives in Seattle, and the relationship he has with the city and its people often took center stage during a two-hour performance that had fans enraptured until his last words. He returns to Climate Pledge Arena Friday for a second show.

Fans might have been there to hear the rapper’s biggest hits, and he didn’t disappoint, but there were plenty of new songs and a deeper cut or two as well. After a blessing by Ken Workman, a direct descendant of Chief Si’ahl of the Duwamish people, opened the show, Macklemore immediately sparked the crowd with new song “Chant.”

Most concerts don’t seem to reach a fever pitch two songs in, but Macklemore managed it by launching into the joyously unhinged “Thrift Shop,” off his 2012 debut “The Heist.” He easily kept the energy high with the pop anthem “No Bad Days,” another new song, while soaking people in the front with a giant water gun.

After the frenetic start, Macklemore surprisingly took time to speak on the Israel-Hamas war for several minutes. Delivering a speech he wrote that morning, he said he would rather be “raw and real than polished and fake.”

“When I say free Palestine, it’s not against anyone,” he said to loud cheers. “It actually means we should protect everyone. It means equality for all. Respect, peace and love. A right to exist no matter what sector you’re from.”

After, he brought out singer Mary Danielle Lambert to help out with their 2012 hit “Same Love,” which Thursday night did double duty as a plea for peace. Written as a piece of powerful advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, the message translated well.

It wasn’t all serious. Soon, Macklemore was soaring over the crowd on a motorcycle as guest Eric Nally helped him out with their 2016 hit “Downtown,” off “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made.” Aside from some pyrotechnics, it was the biggest spectacle of the night. Fortunately, Macklemore didn’t really need much spectacle and the important thing, his vocals, were spot-on and crystal clear throughout the show.

More Local music

  • New outdoor concert venue planned in Snoqualmie Valley for summer 2024
  • KEXP will soon broadcast in the Bay Area
  • How Brandy Clark and Brandi Carlile’s Grammy-nominated duet was born

Another guest, Livingston, made a strong impression with his work singing the earworm hook on the new song “Sorry.” It was the kind of easy-to-digest pop affair that is Macklemore’s calling card but also makes some think of his music as a guilty pleasure.

Perhaps “1984” — whose thrumming beat called to mind Bruce Springsteen’s pop classic “Dancing in the Dark” — won’t help him escape that perception, but why feel guilty listening to someone who clearly takes so much joy in sharing his music with others? No one in the crowd singing along to the retro pop sugar rush seemed to be thinking about whether they were allowed to have fun or not.

The crowd was a good mix of some older folks, teens, kids with parents and plenty of millennials looking to recapture a simpler time, but what stood out was how reverently they stood for the entire show. The love was clear when Macklemore came out for an encore and started off with “The Town,” one of his first singles that proclaims his affection for Seattle.

He closed the show with the only song that makes sense, his career-defining megahit “Can’t Hold Us.” The way the arena exploded into delirium rivaled the reaction to his guest appearance at Ed Sheeran’s August show at Lumen Field, where there was a record crowd of over 78,000 on hand.

Up-and-comer charlieonnafriday, who is from Green Lake, opened and proved that the future of hip-hop is in good hands with a solid set including some unreleased new material and singles — “Same Friends” and “Enough” — that had the crowd buzzing.

Macklemore gestures to the crowd as he performs on stage in Australia. The rapper performed his pro-Palestine track Hind’s Hall in New Zealand for the first time.

Macklemore performs pro-Palestine song for first time at New Zealand concert

Hind’s Hall pays tribute to US campus protesters while condemning Israel’s campaign in Gaza

The US rapper Macklemore has performed live for the first time his new track Hind’s Hall, expressing solidarity with Palestine and condemning Israel’s military campaign, in front of a sellout crowd in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington.

“I stand here today and every day forward for the rest of my life in solidarity with the people of Palestine, with an open heart, in the belief that our collective liberation is at stake – that we all deserve freedom in this life of ours,” Macklemore said in a short speech 40 minutes into his two-hour set.

“Yesterday [Tuesday], I put out a song called Hind’s Hall – can I play it for you guys?” he asked, to a screaming reception from the audience.

As he performed, the red, white and green of the Palestinian flag flashed across the stadium. Behind him a video montage played showing student protesters in the US intercut with footage of politicians and Gaza .

The audience of 5,500 raised their hands as he sang and multiple fans waved keffiyeh – the black and white scarf linked with Palestinian struggle.

Towards the end of the song Macklemore led a chant of “free, free Palestine”, which the crowd repeated back to him. Macklemore later called for an immediate ceasefire.

The artist released his song on social media and YouTube on Tuesday, promising that once it hit streaming services all proceeds would be donated to the UN relief agency Unrwa .

The song gives robust support to Palestine as well as those protesting at US universities against Israel’s activities in Gaza. The title refers to Hamilton Hall, a Columbia University building occupied by students last week and renamed Hind’s Hall by protesters in reference to Hind Rajab, a six-year-old child killed in Gaza .

“If students in tents posted on the lawn / Occupying the quad is really against the law / And a reason to call in the police and their squad / Where does genocide land in your definition, huh?” he raps, referring to the police crackdown against protests.

Israel has said that it is following all international law and that it investigates allegations of abuse by its security forces.

Macklemore’s track addresses Joe Biden, saying “blood is on your hands”, and says he will not be voting for him later this year.

The rapper characterises Israel as “a state that’s gotta rely on an apartheid system to uphold an occupying violent history been repeating for the last 75 [years]”, and says he has experienced support from Jewish people in solidarity with the pro-Palestine protests. “We see the lies in them, claiming it’s antisemitic to be anti-Zionist / I’ve seen Jewish brothers and sisters out there and riding in solidarity and screaming ‘Free Palestine’ with them.”

As well as condemning Israel’s campaign in Gaza, Columbia students are calling for their university to divest from companies linked to Israel – a call that has been repeated in other campuses across the US. Last week New York police arrested more than 100 people protesting at Columbia , including some occupying Hamilton Hall. More than 2,000 people have been arrested over US campus protests .

Macklemore fans Stacey and Matt Johnsen, who had travelled from the bottom of the South Island to see him perform in Wellington, praised the artist for taking a stand.

“I think it’s so cool that someone has finally spoken out,” Stacey said. “He’s down to earth and human.”

“Like anyone else you’re allowed an opinion … nobody wants war, nobody wants innocent people to die or get hurt,” Matt said. “Some other people might be aggressive about it or lean a bit more towards a certain side but that’s not how Macklemore comes across to me.”

The couple felt proud their music hero was taking a risk and hoped Macklemore’s message would resonate with the audience and farther afield. “I would hope it would encourage more people to speak out,” Stacey said.

Macklemore's pro-Palestine rap Hind's Hall has got social media buzzing

Publicity photo of Macklemore wearing a pressed jacket against grey background

US rapper Macklemore , best known for his Hottest 100 and chart-topping hits Thrift Shop and Same Love, is being applauded online for the release of a new protest song called Hind's Hall.

The tough, pro-Palestine track, which samples Ana La Habibi by popular Lebanese singer Fairuz, is delivered in solidarity with US students protesting for ceasefire in Gaza.

The song's title references the Columbia University campus building, officially known as Hamilton Hall but christened ''Hind's Hall' by occupying student protesters last week in tribute to Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza .

"If students in tents posted on the lawn Occupying the quad is really against the law And a reason to call in the police and their squad Where does genocide land in your definition, huh?"

These are the lyrics Macklemore raps, referring to the Los Angeles Police Department crackdown against protests.

"Once it's up on streaming all proceeds to UNRWA," the Seattle artist wrote of the new track online, referring to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, which is supporting Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere.

"What if you were in Gaza? What if those were your kids?" he raps in the closing bars.  "If the West was pretendin' that you didn't exist/ You'd want the world to stand up and the students finally did."

Macklemore blasts President Biden and music peers

Rapping over video footage — showing everything from police and protestors clashing to Israeli soldiers and children on-ground in Gaza — Macklemore criticises President Joe Biden's response to the conflict:

"The blood is on your hands, Biden, we can see it all And f**k no, I'm not votin' for you in the fall."

In the closing verses, he also rebukes his music industry peers for staying quiet on the issue.

"Complicit in their platform of silence," he raps. "What happened to the artist? What do you got to say? If I was on a label, you could drop me today I'd be fine with it cause the heart fed my page."

He also sneaks in a jab at Drake and the Canadian rapper's ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar that has consumed social media in recent weeks, aggressively rapping:

"I want a ceasefire, f**k a response from Drake."

portrait of Macklemore wearing a singlet and gold jewelry with his left hand to his chin

Elsewhere in the song, Macklemore calls out the US government's proposed ban on TikTok ("It's too late … [We've] seen the rubble, the buildings, the mothers and the children.").

He also rejects calls labelling anti-Zionism as anti-Semitic ("I've seen Jewish brothers and sisters out there and ridin' in solidarity and screamin' 'Free Palestine' with them").

The internet reacts

Responses to Macklemore's new song have generally been positive, praising him for stepping up and using his platform to speak out.

Some unlikely high praise came from Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who favourably compared Hind's Hall to his group's famously fiery, political anthems.

"He's out here raising awareness of an in-progress genocide for an audience who might not be clued in, who you and I probably can't reach," commented Chris Walla, music producer and former member of indie rock favourites Death Cab For Cutie.

"That is absolutely real work, I have so much respect for it."

Australian singer-songwriters Angie McMahon and Montaigne praised the song and shared it with their social media followers.

"I genuinely find Macklemore's care really moving," Montaigne wrote on X "Esp[ecially] when he didn't have a clue about all this less than a year ago (like me)."

"This is very powerful. Thank you for creating this, Macklemore," Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein wrote on X .

Similarly, Independent presidential candidate and philosopher Cornel West reacted : "I salute my brother Macklemore using his powerful artistry to tell some painful truths!"

Many took a humorous slant, referencing Macklemore's polarising 2012 novelty hit Thrift Shop , which topped triple j's Hottest 100 and dominated charts worldwide.

Others noted Macklemore's history of progressive politics and activism.

However, not everyone is impressed.

Several X users have pointed towards a 2014 scandal where Macklemore was accused of anti-Semitism after wearing a fake nose, hair, and prosthetic nose many called a Jewish caricature at an event in Seattle.

"Just a reminder, Macklemore is the guy who wore this on stage and the Seattle ADL defended him afterward. Hope they feel good about that now," wrote one X user .

"You're telling me this guy recorded an anti-Zionist song? Never saw it coming," another wrote sarcastically.

Responding to the backlash in a blog post at the time, the rapper said he had no intention of dressing like a "Jewish stereotype" and apologised for having offended anyone.

This isn't the first time Macklemore has gotten political

The Grammy-winning rapper's 2012 single Same Love voiced support for same-sex marriage and criticised hip hop's historic homophobia.

Macklemore played the song at the 2017 NRL Grand Final, despite a petition to ban its performance, and the track later topped the Australian charts .

The rapper's 2016 track White Privilege II , featuring Jamila Woods, also stirred controversy.

An anti-racist statement that inserted Macklemore into the Black Lives Matter conversation after being accused of cultural appropriation , US publication  Slate declared "it isn't a great song, but as a think piece it's not terrible."

Macklemore has also spoken out against the war in Gaza several times before.

In October, he issued an Instagram statement saying he was educating himself on the conflict but was in support of "people around the world who are calling for a ceasefire." Then, on 4 November, he spoke at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Washington, DC .

In December, Macklemore further addressed his stance in concert, criticising the alleged misuse of American tax dollars.

"When I say Free Palestine, it's not against anyone. It actually means we should protect everyone," he said in an Instagram Reel post.

"It means equality for all, respect, peace, and love. It means the right to exist, regardless of what sector you're from… There's innocent humans out in Gaza getting murdered with our dollars, and those precious human lives are an extension of us."

Macklemore

Macklemore has released a new song, praising pro-Palestinian college protesters and calling out President Biden amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

The single is titled “Hind’s Hall” after the name given to Hamilton Hall by Columbia University students who occupied the building in protest. Hind was a 6-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed while fleeing heavy fighting in Gaza City with her family. She had pleaded for help with first responders after her family died but Hind herself died while waiting for help.

Besides rapping about the college protests, the artist calls out those who have claimed that it’s antisemitic to be anti-Zionist, pointing out that he’s seen “Jewish brothers and sisters out there and ridin’ in solidarity” with Palestine.

Macklemore also addresses President Joe Biden directly: “The blood is on your hands, Biden, we can see it all. And fuck no, I’m not votin’ for you in the fall. Undecided. You can’t twist the truth, the people out here united.”

The track comes seven months after Macklemore vowed to use his platform against genocide following Hamas’ October attacks on Israel , which sparked the current Gaza conflict.

At the time, he wrote that Hamas’ actions were “horrific in every way imaginable” and his heart “deeply hurts for the Israelis that lost loved ones to such an abomination.” He then noted that “killing innocent humans in retaliation as a collective punishment is not the answer.”
