A31 roadworks at Ringwood reach critical stage with bridge replacement over River Avon

Report by ITV Meridian's Richard Slee

Work to widen one of the most congested roads in the south has reached a critical stage with the replacement of a bridge over the River Avon.

The scheme to widen the A31 at Ringwood began in October 2021. It involves adding a third lane to the westbound carriageway and is due to be completed in November.

Journey times will be reduced as traffic flow is eased.

Video from National Highways

Work began on the project in October 2021.

But it's not been without controversy - causing a lot of disruption for local people and companies, as well as holiday traffic

Road closures on the A31 at Ringwood continue tonight (Wednesday 10 August).

Westbound lanes from the M27 junction to the A338 Ashley Heath roundabout will be shut from 8pm - 6am Thursday 11 August.

Diversions are in place via the A336, A326, A3060 and A338.

Daniel Kittredge, National Highways Project Manager said: "The main benefit is reducing the bottleneck of people trying to leave Ringwood town which will be relieved for people travelling past Ringwood and onto Bournemouth and will not experience the previous levels of congestion they have done."

The new span is replacing a bridge built in the 1930s - which wouldn't support the new three lane carriageway.

The wider road will open up the route, which at peak times sees lengthy delays and long queues.

But the works have had a negative impact on businesses in Ringwood with some firms saying they have seen visitors numbers drop by 30-40%.

National Highways say work is currently on time and the A31 westbound is expected to reopen by the end of November 2022.

Here are seven North Jersey historic castles you must visit

S ure, New Jersey is progressive when it comes to development. Name us a downtown that doesn't boast a new mixed-use residential complex — or one in the works.

But did you know you can also look back on how development looked during our state's history? There are a variety of castles and mansions to visit across the Garden State, each with their own tie to our past.

Despite the age behind each of these sites — all standing for more than a century — each has been maintained and renovated over time, and are open to New Jersey residents and visitors alike (or, in the case of Lambert Castle, will be soon enough).

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here are seven historic castles to visit in North Jersey on your next weekend outing.

Lambert Castle and Tower, Paterson

While currently closed for renovations, Lambert Castle on the Paterson-Clifton border in Passaic County is expected to reopen to the public in 2023.

The castle was first built on Garret Mountain in 1892 by Catholina Lambert — one of nineteenth century Paterson's most prominent silk textile manufacturers — and originally named "Belle Vista." After his death in 1923, the estate was passed on to his son Walter, who sold it to the City of Paterson in 1925. After briefly being used as a hospital for tuberculosis, the castle and its grounds were adopted into the Garret Mountain Reservation by the Passaic County Park Commission in 1928.

The Lambert Castle Museum consists of three explorable floors, which contain period rooms showcasing the castle's history, including many of Lambert's original possessions and other historical items from the Passaic County Historical Society collections. There are also long-term and short-term exhibition galleries throughout the museum.

Also on Garret Mountain is the 70-foot observation tower known as Lambert Tower, which was built in 1986. The tower is open to the public from May through October on Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all visitors.

Ringwood Manor, Ringwood

A National Historical Landmark, Ringwood Manor in Ringwood State Park dates back to 1807, and was home to a number of ironmasters from the colonial period through the early 20th century. Native American artifacts have also been found on the ground of Ringwood Manor, indicating an early occupation of the site.

Inside, Ringwood Manor features various collections of the estate's history, from details of family life and culture during its time to equipment showcasing the property as a figure in the early iron industry in New Jersey.

Guided tours of Ringwood Manor are held from Wednesday to Sunday on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., except at noon. Admission into the manor is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 62 and older, $5 for children between 6 to 12 years old and free for children 5 and younger.

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a per-car parking fee is required to enter the park, which costs $5 for New Jersey residents and $7 for out-of-state residents.

Go: 1304 Sloatsburg Road, Ringwood; ringwoodmanor.org

Skylands Manor, Ringwood

Located within the Botanical Gardens of New Jersey is Skylands Manor, designed in the 1920s by American architect John Russell Pope. The building features weathered stone, as well as sags and ripples in the slate roof, intentionally designed to appear centuries older. Inside, you can see architectural design reminiscent of the Tudor-revival style, as well as furniture that mimics the gothic interior typical of the time.

The grounds of Skylands Manor is open to the public daily, but guided tours of the inside ground floor of the mansion are available on selected Sundays.

Tour admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors ages 65 and older, $7 for children ages 6 to 18 and free for children under 6.

Go: 5 Morris Road, Ringwood; njbg.org/skylands-manor

The Hermitage, Ho-Ho-Kus

Built in the 1700s, the Hermitage has seen many owners, and was renovated in 1847 in the Gothic Revival style still seen on the property today. The museum features collections of photos from families who inhabited the mansion, including the Rosencrantz family, who owned the property from 1807 to 1970. There are also mannequins dressed with the clothing typically worn through centuries, and period furniture and toys.

Visitors can explore the grounds and gardens of the Hermitage daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with guided tours of the museum typically run from Friday through Sunday at 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and younger.

The Hermitage museum also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a food truck festival, a craft show and a British car show.

Go: 335 Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus; thehermitage.org

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Morristown

This Federal-style, brick mansion in Morristown is the former home of the Macculloch family during the 19th century. It was originally built by George Macculloch, who carved out the Morris Canal to transport farm produce from North Jersey to markets in metropolitan New York.

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum now displays remnants of the early American lifestyle, as well antiques from the 18th and early 19th centuries from the personal collection of its current owner, W. Parsons Todd. This includes collections of political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902) and historic artwork.

Visitors can visit the gardens of the property daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, and the museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. On weekdays, tours of Macculloch Hall are held by appointment only, and tours must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, $4 for children ages 12 and younger, and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Go: 45 MacCulloch Avenue, Morristown; maccullochhall.org

Iviswold Castle, Rutherford

Built in 1868 by New York newspaperman and land developer Lloyd W. Tomkins as a two-story home, Iviswold Castle was bought by David Brinkerhoff Ivison in 1887 and turned into a three-story mansion, equipped with 25 rooms, including a music room and carriage porch.

Switching ownership several times throughout the years, it was purchased in the 1970s by Fairleigh Dickinson University and a college campus was built around it. Once Fairleigh Dickinson outgrew stopped operating on this campus in 1994, it was sold to what is now Felician University in 1997.

Iviswold Castle is now used to house many of the school's administrative officers. The property has been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and the University welcomes visitors to take in its exterior design — a red-tinted Ludowici clay tile roof and brick siding — and the remnants of its Victorian interior.

Operating hours of offices within the Castle are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parking is available to visitors in the Montross Avenue parking lot.

Go: 1 Felician Way, Rutherford; atlasobscura.com/iviswold-castle

Kips Castle, Verona

Kips Castle is a 9,000-foot, medieval-style mansion sitting on eleven acres of land between Verona and Montclair.

First built in 1905 by Frederic Kip, the building consists of 30 rooms, vaulted ceilings and grand fireplaces, and features a two-story, 6,000 square foot carriage house on the property.

A private residence from then until 1980, the estate was purchased by a controversial cult group, which transformed the property into a compound. It was purchased away in 1985, and was sold to the Essex County Parks System in 2006.

Admission to the castle and its grounds are free. The lower level of the castle will be open in December 2023 for self-guided tours, and the property's grounds can be rented for weddings, photography sessions and approved private events.

I’m a travel expert. These are 5 things I would never do when planning a trip

Traveling is one of life’s great joys — from seeing new places to meeting people from another culture, seeing the wider world is something to be treasured. But even the most experienced travelers can find some moments stressful.

On May 8, travel journalist Mark Ellwood joined TODAY to talk about some of his best tips after a lifetime of living out of his own suitcase.

He offered five things he would never do if you want your trip to go off without a hitch.

1. Travel without insurance

Ellwood says that travel insurance is often very low cost and can save you in a pinch.

“It’s the same price as a cup of coffee per day, give or take, and buys you peace of mind when something goes awry," he said.

Ellwood notes many credit cards offer built-in insurance for any trips purchased on that card but he is also a fan of travelinsurance.com or insuremytrip.com. Both are marketplaces where you can shop around for the best plan.

2. Overlook considering all airports

While it might not be the most convenient, Ellwood suggests checking the wider metropolitan area for flights at nearby airports.

“Look for airports nearby — you might score a deal better by searching for, perhaps, Stewart, New York, rather than Newark, (New Jersey)," he said. "Always check nearby airports to both your point of origin and destination.”

3. Exclude lesser-known carriers

“Don’t forget lesser-known carriers," Ellwood says, adding that Breeze Airways his is go-to carrier. He notes that Breeze's home bases are in the southeast and include the following:

“Don’t forget lesser-known carriers,” Ellwood says, adding that Breeze Airways his is go-to carrier. He notes that Breeze’s home bases are in the Southeast and include the following:

  • Charleston, South Carolina
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Norfolk, Virginia
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Fort Myers, Florida

4. Neglect geotagging luggage

There's no worse feeling while traveling than waiting for your luggage to appear on the baggage carousel, only for it to never materialize.

But geotagging your luggage can at least help you track it down.

“Geotag your luggage — whether AirTag or similar," Ellwood says. "You’ll always know where your luggage is ... or isn’t."

If your bag doesn't make it to your final destination, you can always tell the airline where it is to help them track it down.

5. Think there’s a magic time to book a flight

Despite years of rumors, there's really no day or time that's best to book your travel.

“There is no magic day date time to score a deal," Ellwood says. "Instead, the best time is whenever you receive an alert that your route’s gone on sale."

The way to do this is to track your flights ahead of booking them. Ellwood suggests using Google Flights — just type in where and when you're looking to fly, then toggle the alert tab so you'll be notified of any changes.

"This allows you to watch how much it’ll cost and swoop in the moment an airline cuts the price when you want to fly," he says.

Level Crossing Removal Project logo

Doing the heavy lifting at Ringwood East

Works are up, up and away at Dublin Road, Ringwood East , with 2 of the new station’s 4 lift shafts now positioned into place.

The lift shafts, each measuring 14m tall and weighing 13 tonnes, were delivered to site in January to enable crews to complete lift car and cladding insulation ahead of their installation.

The lift-in has been timed with station building arrivals, with the third of the new station’s 4 modular buildings recently delivered to site.

The station’s prefabricated modular design enables the buildings to be built off site and then delivered and lifted into place at different stages of construction to lower the rail line into a trench under.

The remaining station building and lift shafts will be craned into place in the coming weeks, as 24/7 works get underway to remove the dangerous and congested Dublin Road level crossing.

The construction blitz kicks off on Friday, 24 May , with Dublin Road closing to traffic until mid June , and buses replacing trains on sections of the Lilydale Line until early July , when the new Ringwood East Station opens, a year ahead of schedule.

Melbourne private school students expelled over ‘cruel’ spreadsheet rating female classmates

Yarra Valley grammar principal says position of two students was untenable and ‘they will not be returning’

Two boys at a Melbourne private school have been expelled over a spreadsheet in which female classmates were ranked , its principal has told parents.

Four students from Yarra Valley grammar in Ringwood, in Melbourne’s east, were suspended last week after it came to light they had made the list. It included photos of female students ranking them as “wifeys”, “cuties”, “mid”, “object”, “get out” and “unrapable”.

The principal, Mark Merry, wrote to parents on Tuesday morning and said that while the investigation was still ongoing, he formed the opinion that the enrolment of two boys in the school had become “untenable”.

“Others, who have played a lesser role in this matter have been subject to further disciplinary action,” he said.

“The investigation of this issue has been complex and time-consuming and can’t be rushed and I thank our students and families for your patience and confidence as we ensured that all the circumstances were known.”

“The past week has obviously been a difficult one for our community … I am saddened that the actions of a few individuals can cause so much harm as social media has the power to amplify the damage that can be done and the anguish inflicted.”

Merry said the school was characterised by respectful relationships “most of the time”, but that “more work needs to be done”.

“Whilst we conduct regular sessions on respectful relationships and model care and respect in all that we do; this has not been enough,” he said.

“We will be reviewing all of our programmes to ensure that the dignity of all is respected. This needs to be a learning moment for all of us.”

Merry previously said he had reported the list to the police, and on Tuesday a Victorian police spokesperson said investigators would assess the information to determine if it was ‘a matter for police’.

Last week, a screenshot of the list was shared online, with the school becoming aware of the post on Wednesday. The prestigious school costs about $30,000 a year per student to attend.

It created widespread condemnation, with the premier, Jacinta Allan, saying she was “utterly devastated” by the “disgraceful” list.

“To think that you’re sitting in a classroom with classmates who not just hold these views, but write them down and share them,” Allan told reporters.

“This is no joke. Respect for women has to be at the forefront of every classroom, of every household, of every part of our community, because … too many women [are] subjected to violence, too many women [are] losing their lives.”

Speaking on Nine’s Today show, the federal education minister, Jason Clare, called the incident “disgusting and appalling”.

On Monday an assembly was expected to be held with the entire year level, including parents of the female students named in the document.

Yarra Valley Grammar School students suspended over ‘disgraceful’ list ranking female classmates

Four male students have been suspended from a top private school after a ‘disgraceful’ list ranking their female classmates emerged.

Teacher exposes problem millions don’t get

Four boys from a Melbourne private school have been suspended after a list was posted to social media rating their female classmates, in a display the school has called “disgraceful”.

The shocking list was posted by Year 11 students from Yarra Valley Grammar School in Ringwood onto the platform Discord and was discovered by the school last Wednesday.

It featured photos of female students and ranked them from best to worst as “wifeys”, “cuties”, “mid”, “object”, “get out” and “unrapeable”.

The students were suspended on Friday pending further investigation, Nine reports.

Yarra Valley Grammar principal Mark Merry spoke to Nine on Sunday and described the post as “disgraceful”.

“Respect for each other is in the DNA of this school, and so this was a shock not only to us … but it was a shock to the year level and the boys in the year level that see this as way, way out of line,” he said.

He said he was offended by the final category, and has since reported the matter to police to ensure the list wasn’t linked to any criminal offence.

“As a father, I find it absolutely outrageous, disgraceful, offensive. As a principal, I need to make some decisions [about] what we do about all of this,” he said.

“My first impulse and concern is about the wellbeing of the girls concerned. I want to make sure they feel assured and supported by the school.”

“We are going to be consulting the police because the language used could be an inferred threat.

“I don’t think it was, but we need to get further advice on that … I’m hoping it was an appalling lapse in judgement.”

Yarra Valley Grammar School Principal Dr Mark Merry has responded to the reports. Picture: Nine

It costs around $30,000 a year to send a student to the elite Ringwood private school, and Dr Merry said the school prides itself on teaching “respectful relationships”.

“We are well aware of the broader issues in relation to respecting women … we need to really do our best to ensure that young men understand their responsibilities and their boundaries of how they should behave,” he said.

Speaking to Channel 9’s Today on Monday, Dr Merry said the incident was “disgraceful”.

“My first response was just horror, that such a cruel thing could be done and such a degrading attitude could be directed at any of our students,” Dr Merry said on Channel 9’s Today.

“This is so counter to everything this school is about, I think the culture here is one which is respectful and we care for each other. We look after each other.

“There’s a lot of anger. There’s a lot of hurt. There’s a lot of upset here at the school, and that’s something that I need to lead us through. “I need to try and look after, primarily, the young women who are targeted. That’s my first concern. I also need to hold those that are responsible to account.”

Dr Merry said the parents of the offending students were “horrified”.

“They were bewildered that such a thing could happen,” he said. “They were shocked that those sorts of attitudes could be expressed. So all of us here are shocked.

“I think the shock has been that this could happen here. If it can happen here. Yeah, it can happen anywhere.”

It costs about $30,000 a year to send a student to Yarra Valley Grammar School

Dr Merry said the school was still assessing who was “primarily responsible” for the post but had suspended students pending the investigation’s outcome.

“It really strikes me to the core that any of our young people here who we really do hold dearly, can be treated in such a way,” he said.

“We as a community need to own the fact that these vicious attitudes are out there … it’s up to all of us to tackle this head on.”

Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said the display of sexism demonstrated the need for better respectful relationship courses in schools.

“It is disgusting and appalling, I’m glad that the students have been suspended,” Mr Clare said on Monday.

“It demonstrates that there is still a lot more work to do, it’s a job not just for schools, but for parents and political leaders like me as well.

“Part of that is providing funding to schools right across the country for respectful relationship courses and consent courses. I’m signing agreements with all states and territories at the moment to do that, and that’s about $77 million that will roll out across the country.”

Students expelled from Yarra Valley Grammar over spreadsheet that used offensive terms to describe female pupils

Yarra Valley Grammar School sign

Two boys have been expelled from a private school in Melbourne's east after an offensive dossier rating female students was uncovered.

Warning: This story contains offensive language and references to sexual violence.

The students at Yarra Valley Grammar, in Ringwood, were disciplined after staff discovered a screenshot of the spreadsheet, which used offensive terms and referenced sexual violence.

The spreadsheet used terms such as "wifeys" and "cuties" to describe female students and also used the term "unrapeable".

In a letter to parents on Tuesday morning, principal Mark Merry said the position of the students was "untenable" and they would not be returning to the school.

"A number of our students had been targeted in a cruel and highly offensive online post which caused great hurt to them and their families and distress to their friends," Dr Merry said in the letter.

"I am saddened that the actions of a few individuals can cause so much harm as social media has the power to amplify the damage that can be done and the anguish inflicted."

Other students are also facing disciplinary action over the document, which Premier Jacinta Allan described as "disgraceful".

In a statement, Victoria Police said it was "assessing the information to determine if it's a matter for police."

The school is also providing counselling to students and offers courses on gender boundaries and how to behave in respectful relationships.

In his letter to parents, Dr Merry said the behaviour offended the school's values, but showed more needed to be done.

"Whilst we need to accept that this has been an issue here at the school, to characterise this as a 'Yarra problem' would be missing the point," he said.

"Sexism and misogyny are ever-present in our society and it is the responsibility of all of us; families, teachers, the media, workmates and friends to stand up and make it clear that this is not acceptable anywhere."

Yarra Valley Grammar said its programs on respectful relationships will be reviewed.

Tom Harkin from Tomorrow Man, which runs self-development courses at the school, said tough conversations about misogyny within school environments were overdue.

"This wouldn't be a one-off experience, isolated, there'd be experiences like this across the country," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"So, you know, it kind of makes you want to double down and make sure we have more of a systemic approach to this.

"I don't think until very recently we've been taking seriously the types of environments that are shaping views for our young men about how to behave and their relationship toward women in particular."
