Moving away from your comfort zone can be scary. You are leaving your family, friends, and things that are familiar to you. Now factor all of this in with moving halfway across the world and that fear intensifies. Isolating yourself in your new home can lead to a negative experience, that’s why it’s important to find your tribe.

Many of you have read our black expat Q&A series and may wonder if the hype is real. Are black expat communities really popping in Asia? Let me be the first to tell you, yes they are!

Finding your tribe may take a little more effort than normal, but it is totally worth it. Here are 5 locations in Asia with large Black Expat Communities:

South Korea  

Contrary to popular belief, South Korea is a favorite destination for Black Expats. Not to be confused with North Korea, as many of our parents will do, this Asian destination is home to a large group of black Americans who are now English teachers in public and private schools around the country.

From Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi,  the black expat community in Vietnam is growing. Most expats use Vietnam as a temporary place of residence while bouncing around Asia.

This is the mecca of Black Expats. Whether its Chiang Mai or Bangkok, the melanin is strong here. It is in large part due to the extremely low cost of living and the ability for foreigners to start businesses. The Chiang Mai community hosts a weekly Sunday dinner in addition to frequent meetups so that the tribe feels at home.

Although the visa process is harder than most of the other locations, this has not deterred many black expats from calling China home. Expats here find work as English teachers, professional athletes, and consultants for various businesses. Many people also bring their children with them and enroll them in prestigious International Schools, which is usually an added perk of being a teacher in the country.

Six Black people-friendly international travel destinations

With COVID-19 restrictions having eased up since the height of the pandemic, many people are excited about traveling again.

One concern that has always remained prevalent within the Black community is racism outside the U.S. With as stressful as traveling can be, these notably six safe and welcoming international locations can provide some peace of mind.

With this Caribbean island’s notoriety   for its rich culture and amazing beach views, there is much to take in when traveling here. Jamaica is predominately populated with people of African descent  who welcome all kinds of tourists every year. Although there are many places to eat Jamaican food in the U.S., nothing compares to trying the real thing where jerk-style cooking was born.

According to the 2010 census, it is estimated that 91 million people in Brazil are Black or have African lineage. With these numbers, it will not be hard for travelers to feel at home.

Many people consider Brazil to have the “body of America and the soul of Africa” because of its history and African influence in the food.

Aside from the culture, Brazil is known for its year-round beautiful weather as it sits right below the equator, making for a humid yet tropical climate.

• Dominican Republic

Sharing a large island with Haiti, the Dominican Republic is yet another place where seeing a Black or brown face is very common.

This is a great destination for those who enjoy exploring the outdoors and do not mind getting wet in the process.

The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua is a famous canyon on the island that consists of several waterfalls, hiking trails  and swimming opportunities. .

The nightlife is unlike any other as there are many evening adventures to choose from such as bars, restaurants and clubs.

Sitting on the southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar is the second-largest island country in the world.

Although the island is underdeveloped regarding tourist attractions, people still come and explore the island’s wildlife and lush forests. Just like the popular 2005 film “Madagascar”, the country is known for being home to the white-ring-tailed Lemur.

Given that Madagascar is part of the African motherland, Black travelers should feel right at home when visiting.

Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand is one of the most visited Asian countries with  the delicious food and great weather bringing  people back.

This country is a diverse melting pot of people as tourists from all over the world come to visit and experience this cultural hub. There is plenty for tourists to see and do all over the country, such as hike through the lush jungles and indulging in crystal blue beaches.

Many locals and other visitors have noted how cheap it is to eat in Thailand and get the most out of their money when it comes to housing.

This family-friendly vacation destination is located in Southeastern Europe and accommodates millions of tourists every year.

This country has a rich history dating back centuries  with many historical monuments still standing today.

For those who love a glass of good wine, Greece has a wide assortment that is worth trying as the grapes are grown and produced on the mainland, giving people a real taste of Greece. Greece is also known to have great hospitality towards its visitors, so people of all kinds are welcome there.

There aren't many blacks in South Korea, and most are stationed here with the U.S. military or are here from countries in Africa to study or work. In general, Koreans don't discriminate any more against blacks than they do against any other foreigners. Those who take issue with foreigners will do so regardless of skin color. That said, Koreans have culturally found lighter skin more attractive, since historically, those who worked in the fields got darker, while royalty and the aristocratic yangban class kept their complexions hidden from the sun. Since black travelers are rare in South Korea, you may get some curious stares.

More often, we see beautiful black people traveling the world and sprinkling melanin magic all over the globe. However, being a black traveler can come with its share of uncertainty about where to travel and what countries are safe and comfortable as a black traveler.

I’m sure you see my fellow black travelers on Instagram are living their best life traveling to beautiful islands of the Caribbean, eating the best food money can buy in Asia, and immersing in the culture of other countries in Africa and South America with people who look like us.  

However, sometimes, traveling to a country for the first time may turn out differently than you would hope. 

Let’s be real . Some countries, don’t like seeing black folks visiting or touring their streets. And, unfortunately, some of us have found out the hard way that some countries aren’t black-friendly. Especially while being greeted by rude people or stared at with disgust. 

But we ain’t letting that stop us, are we?! 

Because despite all of that, my friend, every country around this big wide world isn’t like that. And we’re not letting a few people in a few countries stop us black travelers from experiencing new cultures and new traditions, meeting new people, and building a meaningful life of travel and inspiration .

Besides, I love seeing black travelers on Instagram speaking out and expressing what countries they feel comfortable as a black traveler.

Portugal and I have a long history. From the very moment I arrived in Lisbon in the spring 2012, I felt completely safe and welcome in the beautiful country of Portugal. I was deeply inspired by the warmth of the people, the laidback lifestyle, and the delicious Pasteis de Nata, or egg tarts. 

In Portugal, I felt embraced by the people as a Black traveler, with even strangers going out of their way to make me feel welcome. This was in stark contrast to the racism I experienced in Spain . The Portuguese, in my experience, were much more unassuming and friendly.

As I rode the famous Lisbon trolley through the narrow streets of Chiado that spring, I felt a sense of euphoria that I’ve only experienced in a few other places. I knew that I would becoming back to Portugal for sure, and I’ve since returned many times.

Portugal continues to be among my favorite countries because of its rich history , vibrant culture, and, most importantly, the friendly people .

While living in Spain

While studying abroad in Spain during college, I reluctantly tagged along to Lisbon with two friends who were visiting. At the time, I didn’t know much about Portugal and didn’t have much expectations for Lisbon. I was completely blown away. I distinctly remember riding the Lisbon trolley through the colorful, hilly streets and thinking, ‘ Wow! This place is amazing.’

I like to say that the sun shines differently in Portugal. The place is so bright and energetic that you can’t help but be happy while you’re there.

Since 2012, I have visited Portugal eight times and consider it to be one of the friendliest countries in Europe for Black travelers . I’ve gone wine tasting in Porto , toured the palaces in Sintra , eaten the fresh seafood in Ericeira , and much more. 

I would highly recommend Portugal to Black travelers, including solo female travelers. Even though Portugal has become more popular in recent years, I still believe it is an underrated destination with so much to offer.

Iceland is the one country where I felt safe and comfortable as a black solo traveler. I made the decision to visit the country on my 25 th birthday since another American told me it was the one country I couldn’t miss.

With Iceland’s hot springs , volcanoes, and auroras, I thought, who wouldn’t want to visit this country for their 25 th birthday? 

So, since it was my first time celebrating my birthday abroad, I wore a “It’s My Birthday” T-shirt while I was visiting Reykjavik . Luckily, to my surprise, the locals in Reykjavik loved it. Every time I walked by an Icelander in the city, they always made it a big deal to say “Happy Birthday” to me.

From large groups of Icelanders to couples walking by, nobody hesitated to make me feel special , which made my birthday all the more enjoyable.

So, if you’re a black traveler who’s planning to visit Iceland, I highly recommend it. I never felt so welcomed by any other country on my birthday, which shows how friendly the people are.

Jamaica is a country where I, felt extremely comfortable as a Black traveler. The hospitality and welcoming nature of the locals towards black travelers made me feel at home every time I visited. From the moment I arrived until the moment I returned home, I was treated like family.

With repeated visits, I have grown to know and love Jamaica . The Jamaican national motto, “Out of Many One People,” embodies the country’s multiracial roots, although many of the people I encountered looked like me and my family. Whenever I get to my transfer, the drivers always greet me with “welcome home.”

I first visited Jamaica in 2011 for my father’s wedding and instantly fell in love with the country and its rich culture. It has been one of my favorite countries ever since, and I have visited Jamaica five times.

Jamaican people are known for their warm hospitality, and they take immense pride in making their guests feel welcome.

Jamaican Cuisine

Additionally, Jamaican cuisine is famous for its bold and spicy flavors. A Jamaican host will often prepare a feast for their guests, including dishes like jerk chicken , rice and peas, and plantains .

Furthermore, Reggae music is a big part of the culture, and guests are often treated to live music performances or impromptu sing-alongs .

Jamaican people are proud of their culture and heritage, and they enjoy sharing it with visitors. Guests may be invited to attend cultural events or visit local landmarks and attractions.

Overall, Jamaican people go out of their way to make guests feel welcome in their country. Their warmth, hospitality, and love of life are infectious and will make any visitor feel right at home.

I strongly recommend other Black travelers to visit Jamaica and challenge them to stay in local Jamaican-owned hotels instead of resorts. Resorts often exaggerate instances of crime outside of the resort to encourage travelers to stay within their confines. I encourage them to get outside the resort and experience the real Jamaica .

Japan is not only one of my favorite countries in the world (tied for first, actually), but is also one of the best black-friendly countries to visit. A fantastic country to visit on its own for its food, culture, and shopping, 

Japan is also a good country to visit for new travelers because it has the excellent and well-maintained infrastructure and ranks as one of the “safest countries in the world”. For the most part, people are very polite and respectable, so there is usually always a kind stranger willing to help you navigate your way around.

However, specifically as a black traveler, I recommend Japan because out of all of the Asian countries I’ve traveled to, I was stared at the least in Japan. I think the idea of becoming a spectacle creates hesitation for Black folks wanting to travel to Asia, and that’s valid! It gets a little tiring when people constantly ask to “touch your hair” every time you leave your hotel – or even at the hotel! 

For the most part, especially in the big cities like Tokyo, Osaka , and Kyoto , the local residents didn’t pay any special attention to me (or specifically my Blackness), aside from the occasional “I like your hair!” then they would keep it moving. If anything, the people who wanted to take pictures with/of me were tourists from Europe and other parts of Asia.

What prompted you to travel to this destination?

Initially, I wanted to visit Japan because I’ve been a fan of Japanese culture and entertainment since I was a child. I have traveled to Japan twice , for a combined time of three weeks between my two experiences. I’ve visited eight different cities and fallen in love with pretty much all of them. 

Whether you travel for a relaxing vacation, a vibrant nightlife, cultural immersion , endless boutique shopping , or wild adventures , there is something for everyone in Japan. 

On my most recent trip, I was able to connect with Japan’s Black community and visit a number of  Black owned restaurants in Tokyo .  We truly are everywhere!!

Plus, Japanese food is incredible already, but Japanese food in JAPAN?? Baby, let me go ahead and book my next flight.

Thinking about the countries I’ve visited in reference to where I’ve felt most comfortable and safe as a Black female traveler is a beautiful process of reflection all on its own. In all honesty, I’ve been fortunate enough to have had mostly positive experiences in the countries I’ve had the privilege of visiting. So, for the purposes of this blog, I’ll focus o n Egypt for the mere fact that it’s the only country that I explored as a solo Black female traveler. 

My first visit to Cairo, Egypt, was for business. I was attending a week-long training there with a group of colleagues from various other countries. Upon arrival, we were given an introduction to the country with a visit to the pyramids of Giza . 

The rest of our days were filled with presentations, but every evening we were treated to a local experience such as belly dancing, a cruise of the Nile River , and a few other unique excursions. All of these experiences are what made me fall in love with this place and were the reasons why I decided to plan a return trip for a proper tourist experience. 

I returned just a few months after the business trip. The second time around, I stayed in Cairo again, but I also took a day trip to Alexandria .

What about that country made you feel welcome?

The question asked is about not only feeling safe but also feeling comfortable as a black traveler. Now, whilst I felt 100% safe while exploring the city of Cairo alone, there were instances that made me feel uncomfortable but the discomfort is not a compelling enough reason to discourage other female travelers from visiting this vibrant city.

What it requires is a level of awareness, preparation, and grace. Catcalling is rife in Cairo, especially if you’re a Black female solo traveler. Their speaking in a language I didn’t understand softened the blow , so to speak because I had no idea what they were saying. I just knew that it couldn’t have been pleasant because catcalling looks and sounds the same no matter the country.

The discomfort was only brought about by the loneliness I felt in those moments. If I was with a friend, we would have probably laughed it off and felt absolutely nothing. I think I always knew that they wouldn’t harm me in any way, and so I didn’t feel particularly threatened or unsafe. 

Overall though, the people of Egypt are friendly , warm, and welcoming. They are among the many reasons why I fell in love with the place. Yes, they look different, speak a different language, and dress mostly differently, but those differences were what drew me to them as a people because I have a deep appreciation for the unique cultures that every country embodies. 

How did they embrace you?

I didn’t understand a word of Arabic , but the women there would always engage me with a smile. I felt safe finding places of interest on my own. Plus, I felt safe getting into a taxi on my own to get to my desired locations. Also, I felt safe walking around with my camera and capturing images of places that interested me. And, I felt safe eating out. I don’t have a reason to discourage fellow black people from visiting Egypt. If anything, I have many compelling reasons why they should go . 

Why would you recommend traveling to Egypt to other black travelers?

Egypt offers a lot of unique experiences that I have yet to find elsewhere, not to mention the delectable Egyptian cuisine.

The historic sites and museums are something to marvel at. The sheer size of the pyramids cannot be accurately depicted in pictures. They are best witnessed in person. The Egyptians’ way of driving is incredibly fascinating and a thrill to watch , perhaps for adrenalin junkies!

In Antigua, Guatemala, I found a haven of safety and comfort as a black traveler that exceeded my expectations. The warmth of the locals, expressed through countless smiles, politeness, and genuine respect, made me feel not just like a visitor but a welcomed guest.

A memorable incident during a photoshoot stands out – around 20 school kids gathered around me, expressing their innocent curiosity by asking to touch my hair and take photos together. Their genuine interest and the overall atmosphere left me feeling embraced and appreciated as a black woman.

Why did you choose to travel to Guatemala?

My decision to visit Guatemala was influenced by both affordability and a desire to explore Central America further. With a roundtrip ticket costing less than $200, the country’s economic accessibility was a significant factor.

Having previously traveled to Nicaragua and Costa Rica, I anticipated a similar warmth and openness in Guatemala. The positive reviews from fellow travelers on social media further fueled my excitement.

Guatemala proved to be a captivating destination , and I’m eager to return and explore more of its diverse offerings. Despite my initial expectations, there is so much more to discover beyond what I experienced during my first visit. 

The beauty of Guatemala extends far beyond the surface , and I look forward to immersing myself in the rich tapestry of Guatemala’s culture and landscapes in the future.

Turks and Caicos

A country in which I felt incredibly safe and comfortable as a black traveler was Turks and Caicos. The warm hospitality of the people, diverse culture, and the general atmosphere made me feel right at home. The locals were respectful, and the inclusivity of their community made the experience truly memorable.

I initially went to Turks and Caicos on my dear friend’s birthday extravaganza, it was definitely chosen for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture. It was my first visit, and I’d definitely go back. 

Also, a few of the popular places I experienced were Noah’s Ark , a beautiful beach club on its own little island over the water; the Conch Shack , a delicious Caribbean cuisine, and the Shisha Lounge, to name a few. 

Would you recommend Turks and Caicos to other black travelers?

I highly recommend Turks and Caicos to other black travelers because of the welcoming locals, the diverse cultural scene, and the overall sense of safety , which makes it an amazing destination to explore and enjoy.

As a traveler who has visited 100 countries and territories, it is difficult to pick one country where I have felt safe and comfortable as a black traveler. I always tell my friends and followers that I feel safer abroad than I do stateside. 

Since I must choose just one place, let’s go to the Motherland , specifically the West African country of… Senegal . 

Senegal, the home of Teranga (hospitality in the national language, Wolof), is a beautiful country with beautiful people. If feeling at home was a person, it would be Senegal. 

How many times have you traveled to Senegal?

My first time in Senegal was in 2017 when I studied abroad there for a semester. I’ve revisited five times since then and also hosted a group of 6 earlier this year. 

As soon as you land, you are greeted with a heartfelt smile and a welcome home. The capital city of Dakar is filled with museums, bustling markets, and the sound of the imam calling people to prayer. 

If you identify as being a part of the “African diaspora”, I highly encourage you to visit Senegal. A visit to Goree Island , a UNESCO world heritage, is a must. Visiting the slave castle and walking through the door of no return is not an easy feat, yet “we are our ancestors wildest dreams”.

There are a couple of countries where, fortunately, I’ve felt comfortable as a black traveler . The most recent is Kenya. I was there for two months in October and November 2022, and I loved it. I completely felt at home . It helps, of course, that it’s an African country , so the majority of the people are black. 

But on top of that, the people are so warm , open, and friendly and made me feel welcome even though I don’t speak Swahili . It’s a vibe over there, and people really know how to have a good time. 

From the hustle and bustle of Nairobi to the laidback atmosphere of the Kenyan coast , the people showed me love wherever I went. The fact that the people “look like me” also played a significant role in making me feel at ease.

This familiarity created a sense of connection and belonging, alleviating the feeling of being an outsider that can sometimes arise in other parts of the world during my travels.

What prompted you to travel to this destination initially? 

I’ve traveled extensively in the Americas, Asia, and Europe, so I decided to explore an African country this time. My goal was to use my money to support black communities and businesses.

Kenya proved to be an excellent choice, and I highly recommend it to other black travelers. The experience of connecting with your roots and supporting local businesses is unparalleled.

A country that I felt safe and comfortable as a black female traveler is Colombia. I’ve visited Cartagena, Colombia, twice and felt welcomed by the locals to take pictures. People enjoyed being immersed in the culture by going on a walking tour downtown and taking salsa lessons.  

Colombia has a large Afro-Colombian population, so it was nice to see people who looked like me embracing their culture. The people were respectful to me and helpful in recommending the best shops and restaurants for food and desserts.

I also enjoyed seeing all of the black street art . I especially love the energy in the evenings and at night with street performances.

Why would you recommend traveling to Colombia?

The food is also amazing, and there is a really fun nightlife. While downtown has beautiful black art, there are also hidden gems like The Pink Sea (El Salar de Galerazamba) that can be visited through a tour. This trip has the perfect blend of food, art, culture, and fun! 

Partake in street entertainment, eat at restaurants, and go on tours to learn about the country’s culture. The first time I visited the country was for a girl’s trip. I was unsure of what to expect. 

I would encourage other black travelers to visit this country to have the opportunity to see and relate to a large group of people, enjoy the colorful surroundings, and also try activities that are related to the culture.

Hey guys, I’m Kosa , a Houston-based food blogger who lives by the mantra “eat all the things”. So of course, when I travel, I travel to eat. I’ve been to some amazing places over time, and I can say my most recent visit to Munich was one of my most memorable trips.

Now I know Germans sometimes get a bad rap for being “mean” (I think it’s the language), but honestly, I’ve felt the most safe and comfortable as a black traveler there. 

The stares you get as a black traveler in any country will, of course, always be there, but the people were also very welcoming. Of course, the majority of them didn’t look like me, but even still, I felt comfortable asking questions when I needed to and talking to people when the situation called for it. 

Now you are probably thinking, why Munich ? Well, I went for the Beer, aka Octoberfest. It was a bucket list trip for me, and it was an absolute blast. 

Octoberfest Backstory

Fun fact : Octoberfest consists of a bunch of communal tables in these huge tents. The idea is you go drink, sit at a long table with a bunch of strangers, and make friends. I went with my friend, a fellow black traveler, and we did exactly that. We sat at a table and, well, made friends . Most of the people at our table were from Munich, and they were really nice, respectful, and honestly a bunch of fun . They walked us through the do’s and don’ts, and overall, we had a blast.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this event consists of drinking something like three plus liter beers a day. So of course, people are probably a lot nicer than usual, but, even still, I would go visit again. 

I think next time, I would go for the culture rather than such a large tourism-based event. That way, I could see a different side of the city. But, the moral of the story and, this whole post is to go to Octoberfest, buy the cultural attire, and talk to strangers! You won’t regret it!

As a kid, I would have never imagined traveling to Japan. Japan is one of my favorite travel destinations , and I greatly admire it. I visited for the first time when I was offered a job in the area.

As a single parent , my kids and I traveled across Japan and visited many places for three years. Every tourist has unique experiences and viewpoints as they depart from a place. I had the most incredible experience of my life when I left forJapan.

Travelers of all backgrounds will generally find Japan friendly and safe. The nation’s strong emphasis on courtesy and respect and its low crime rate are the main factors contributing to safety. Despite cultural differences, the people of Japan are renowned for their warmth and friendliness. And they are famed for their hospitality.

Furthermore, most Japanese people view and appreciate various facets of black culture. Nevertheless, there might not be a sizable black population in Japan. The Locals often welcome visitors warmly, appreciating the cultural exchange.

Elements like music, fashion, and entertainment rooted in black culture often find their way into mainstream Japanese society. So, while walking streets or entering establishments, you will feel welcomed as a black traveler if you are respectful. You can go to many nightclubs in Tokyo and other major cities and find hip-hop music playing.

Black Culture in Japan

Nevertheless, from my time exploring Japan, I noticed that although they may not have a large black population, the locals value the cultural interchange and frequently extend a warm welcome to guests. In many areas, you can find that Black-centric entertainment, fashion, and music have found their way into Japanese society’s mainstream.

If you are courteous, you will feel at home whether you are strolling around or going inside establishments. You can expect to hear hip-hop music playing by restaurants and retail stores. You can also take in the culture, and the food is excellent.

Plus, the stunning tropical islands of Okinawa, Japan, are a hidden treasure . You can explore the jungles, which will bring you to various waterfalls . And the beaches will astound you. The water is as clear as Hawaii, and there’s fewer people on the beaches.

However, another location I love is Osaka . It’s a large city well-known for its exciting nightlife, delicious street food, and contemporary urban setting.

Another city is Tokyo . While visiting, you can enjoy traditional and modern experiences. Ranging from bustling retail areas and entertainment hotspots to ancient temples and shrines.

Now, there are two ways to get from one place to another: by train or by flight. However, since Okinawa lies off the mainland, you must book a flight.

Traveling with kids

I’ve taken numerous trips across Japan with my three kids. And every place has been enhanced by the subtle cultural differences, intriguing historical landmarks, and kind residents. I would suggest Japan to other black tourists. However, as with any traveler, remember to show consideration, learn some primary language, and research local customs. For instance, displaying your tattoos may be deemed offensive in some areas. 

Other than that, trust me, Japan is a safe country for black travelers. You will enjoy yourself if you keep an open mind to different customs. I plan to return for a visit in the summer of 2024.

Now I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the country in which I’ve felt safe and comfortable as a black traveler.

I’ve been to many countries and although other countries such as Egypt , Morocco , and Jamaica are countries filled with people who look like me, I felt the need to talk about my experience while visiting Edinburgh, Scotland . 

My daughter and I visited Scotland while we were living in the UK . We decided to take a long weekend trip there because it was closer to us and we could take the train.

Edinburgh is a gem

Unbeknownst to me, this would be one of my favorite places to visit because of the sheer hospitality the locals showed us. Now I’m gonna tell you, you don’t see too many black people living or visiting Edinburgh. It was a sprinkle of us here and there. So I was astonished on how safe we felt as black travelers in Edinburgh.

When it’s only my daughter and I traveling, I usually have to take extra precautions to ensure we are safe and not being harassed or followed. But we did not feel any sense of uneasiness at all, even while walking around the square for food at night! 

As soon as we got off the train and and walked to Old Town, people were very friendly and very talkative. Although I could barely understand some of them because of their thick Scottish accent, it was nice to know that we were welcome .

Although, we only spent 3 days in Edinburgh , it made a huge impression on us, and I hope to visit another city in Scotland in the near future.

How to Be a More Responsible Traveler in 2021

Travel stories, my experience traveling as a black woman through asia.

Traveling through Asia to places such as Korea, China, Japan, and the Philippines as a black woman was both a pleasurable and interesting experience for me. I lived in South Korea for twelve months as an ESL teacher, which was absolutely amazing. However, being a black woman living in South Korea had its ups and downs. I was generally welcomed by everyone: my students, my colleagues, and random strangers. I was stared at by children and adults but I knew the stares were out of curiosity and not malicious in any way. I would frequently be asked, “Where are you from?” by inquisitive elderly people who were intrigued to talk to me and by taxi drivers making conversation during our rides.

As well as being asked questions by strangers, I would be asked many questions by the students I taught. I got used to being asked, “Why is the color of your palm lighter than the rest of your body?” I had never been asked a question like this before but it was with these sorts of interactions that I was able to explain to them that people around the world are different. 

My time in China felt overwhelming at times. At tourist locations, I would hear phone shutter sounds and would turn around to see a camera or phone being pointed at me. I felt slightly uncomfortable in a few places because people did not ask to take my picture but, despite this, I was still able to really enjoy my travels. I found that although people are friendly, someone might still take a picture of you without your consent. Again, this was not malicious behavior, but done out of curiosity and excitement. 

In Japan, I felt more of a sense of normality, since I was not being treated like a celebrity or a tourist attraction. I could go about my business without worrying whether someone was going to take my picture behind my back or ask multiple questions about my hair. 

Even though I experienced a few negative experiences during my time in Asia, I also had double the amount of positive experiences. On many occasions, I would get comments such as “small head” which is a compliment in Korea. My students would forever tell me I was beautiful and taxi drivers would always make conversations with me. In Hong Kong, I was told that my skin is beautiful. I really enjoyed my time there and my positive experiences overwhelmingly outweigh the negative.

Some people you meet in Asia may have never come into contact with a black person before, having only ever seen black people in the media. This can sometimes result in stereotyping. While these stereotypes can be negative or positive, the majority of the time their intentions are purely out of curiosity and are not malicious. Overall, I found Asia to be a refreshing place to travel to and I would definitely recommend going. My advice for black women traveling to Asia is to be prepared for how you may be perceived when you visit so that it does not come as a surprise if someone touches your hair without asking or stops and stares.

Black Travel: The 15 Best Countries For Black Travelers

I have learned that one of the biggest concerns that men and women of color have about international travel is safety. So I did a little research and put together a couple of countries together. Here is a list of 15 of the best countries for Black travelers.

Iceland is a great country that has quickly been growing in popularity. The country is not known for being the cheapest, but if you can find a good deal on flights and be creative with where you choose to sleep at night, then it might become a possibility.

Iceland is known for having amazing scenery and also great outdoor activities. You should also be able to find a bunch of breweries and delicious food. I wrote a post about solo travel in Iceland and it could be helpful if you choose to do a solo trip there.

When I think about Portugal, I think about amazing food and even more amazing scenery. While Portugal can sometimes be seen as a companion trip to Spain, it is a country that is more than able to stand on its own. Since Portugal is such a diverse country in it’s own right, it is definitely one of the best countries for Black Travelers.

Like almost all European countries, there is an off season for Portugal. If you go during the parts of the year where the crowds are not as big, then you can save a lot of money. I also suggest staying in hostels to save a few extra bucks.

Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations for people of color. There are so many Black people that I see posting pictures of their spa days, beach trips, and visits to the World Heritage Sites. I even have a friend that spent a year studying abroad in Thailand and had nothing but wonderful things to say.

Like many Southeast Asian countries, Thailand is known for having friendly locals who are always willing to extend a hand to travelers who are visiting the country. In addition, the country is super cheap to stay in. Thailand is a place that you can find affordable lodging in almost any part of the country. If you stay out of restaurants and stick to local street food, then you will find that your dollar can stretch a long way.

Canada is known for being an excepting and progressive country. What few people know is that there are several parts of Canada that have a substantial minority population. Part of this is because of immigration. Canada has a much easier immigration policy than America and several majority Black countries have groups of people who are housed in Canada.

In particular, there is a large Caribbean Canadian population in Toronto. Toronto is an eclectic city with so many sites to offer to a traveler. The food is amazing and the art culture is strong. You may freeze to death in the winter time but it is worth the trip anyway.

In one of my earlier posts of some of the safest places for solo female travelers to go, I put Singapore on the list. The pull for Singapore is the effort that they put into making sure that the tourist are safe. They have a well trained and available police force that is known to work well with foreigners. In addition the US has a good working relationship with the country if by chance you were to get into trouble.

Japan is on the list because of their historic love of Black culture. You can go to many of the nightclubs in Tokyo and other major cities and find hip hop music blaring from the speakers. In addition to the enjoyment of the culture you can find amazing food and welcoming locals. As a person who has traveled internationally before you can not under estimate how important it is to have a group of locals who are willing to give recommendations and directions.

Senegal is an amazing choice for group travel and solo travel. The country is known for being diverse in the activities that it can offer. If you are a foodie then you can take advantage of the amazing food that the country has available. In addition you can also get your activity on with a bunch of outdoor activities like hiking or taking a safari. I would definitely suggest that you go to the capitol city of Dakar.

France is on every list for safe countries before. Paris in particular is known for being a hot spot for Black ex-pats. There are several famous black artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Josephine Baker, James Baldwin, and Beyonce who have faved about how amazing Paris is. Vietnam is a fascinating place to be. There is a wonderful combination of Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese culture that makes Vietnam a very special place. What I think people truly enjoy about Vietnam is that it is a very affordable trip. If you take advantage of hostels and local street food then you can seriously save some coins. Vietnam is known for having friendly locals, affordable lodging, and super cheap street food.

I don’t know much about Malaysia, but I know that Kuala Lumpar is lit. This is a great place to travel because it is known for having a great night life that almost any budget can afford. Like the other Asian countries that are on the list, Malaysia is known for being very affordable. I would definitely suggest spending some time at the Petronas Towers so that you can get the full experience of the skyline of the city.

How can anyone not love a country where you can stuff yourself with chocolate, beer, and waffles. Personally, this is what I think all vacations should consist of. Belgium is also located in a part of Europe where you can take lots of day trips to other European countries. Luckily, the train system in Europe is absolutely lovely and easy to use. The country is incredibly safe for couples, groups, and solo travelers.

Greece is one of the countries that I went to solo. I spent almost a week in Greece and went out to the island of Crete. Greece is absolutely amazing for solo travel. Many of the people who live there speak english and their public transportation is absolutely amazing and easy to use.

Many people said that Greece is an expensive country but I found the absolute opposite to be true. Unless you are going to sit down restaurants, I found the food to be super affordable. I also got a few things from markets and the prices were definitely right. In addition, I stayed in an Airbnb and I found that I saved a lot of money compared to traditional hotels.

Brazil is known for having one of the highest populations of African people outside of the continent of Africa. There is so much to learn for Brazil with their combination of African and Portuguese culture. There is a deep art community here that travelers can take advantage of. The food in Brazil is also known to be amazing and life changing.

It is a country that for sure should be on the bucket list for any traveler. Several of the cities are known for being dangerous at night but during the day there shouldn’t be any issues. Travelers should stay in well lit and populated areas. I would not recommend heavy drinking and walking around isolated parts of any city in Brazil.

I have heard mixed reviews about Cuba but not because it isn’t safe. Cuba is actually one of the safest countries that any traveler could possible go to. You can typically find a police offer in all the crowded areas and they often speak other languages.

Where I have heard mixed reviews is regarding the food. Some people absolutely love it and other are running for the hills to get out. Regardless of food, the Cuban culture is infectious. There is so much art and music and a traveler can take advantage of. In addition, there are lots of travelers that also go there for medical attention because of the cheaper costs.

Scotland has some of the best people around. They are known for their amazing personalities and wonderful senses of humor. They are the kind of people who will meet you in a bar, tell you their life story, buy you a beer, and then invite you over for dinner.

This is definitely a country where Black skin is appreciated and welcome. I can’t say that you are going to find a bunch of hip hop blaring but you will find welcoming locals. You will find people who don’t really care about your skin tone as long as you are kind and treating them with respect. You can find my guide to Scotland here .

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto. 

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.  

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

Discover the places writer Stephanie Yeboah and her social media followers have selected for giving the best experience.

A few years ago, while considering options for the perfect destination for my annual birthday holiday, I decided to do a call out on my social media channels for the best spots to travel solo as a Black woman. Frankly, I was tired of having to search online for honest answers about where I can visit without being exposed to racial slurs and harrassed. 

I've written about my experiences traveling while Black in the past and how the unexpected racial micro (and macro!) aggressions I experienced would discourage me from visiting again. I believe that one of the biggest concerns Black travelers have when it comes to international travel is safety. Add to that the additional  considerations women have as part of daily life and it's no wonder I feel hesitant before booking a flight. Will I be racially profiled? Will strangers come up to me asking to touch my hair? Will I be subject to rude stares in public?

While no destination is a complete utopia where the Black experience exists in a vacuum, there are many places where Black travelers have felt comfortable exploring and others that are particularly exciting for travelers right now.  I’ve taken a cross-section of responses I got from Black female travelers and added them to my own list of personal experiences; read on for some of the destinations on our recommended list to visit.

1. Accra, Ghana

It’s been more than 400 years since the first slave ships departed from the shores of Ghana before arriving in the Western world. Ghanaian politicians have also long been advocates of the Pan-African movement and in 2019, Ghana started to invite people of African descent to visit with the promise of easier visa applications and a year-long calendar of culturally immersive events, dubbing it the ' Year of Return '. Since then, many have been traveling back to Ghana to connect with their ancestral roots, so there has never been a better time for Black women to travel there. Speaking as a person of Ghanaian descent, I can attest to the fact that it is indeed one of the safest places I’ve ever visited and lived.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

While Portugal can sometimes be seen as a companion trip to Spain , it's a country that's more than able to stand on its own. Since it is such an incredibly diverse country in its own right, it is definitely one of the best countries for Black travelers. If you are going for the first time, I would suggest visiting Lisbon , Porto and Faro , which have huge African communities. 

3. Montreal, Canada

There’s so much to love about Toronto , especially with its thriving Caribbean culture, but Ontario ’s capital can get quite busy for that very reason. That’s why you should head to Montreal instead! Montreal has a strong Afro-Caribbean culture, and is a foodie city with the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, according to Geos Montreal. Every April, Vues d’Afrique holds the Pan-Africa International Film Festival – a celebration of African and Creole culture through film. Music lovers should try to visit in June for the annual Montreal Jazz Festival featuring famous Black jazz musicians like Dianne Reeves and Buddy Guy. 

4. Thailand 

Thailand has definitely become one of the most popular travel destinations for people of color – especially Black women. There are so many friends and influencers that I see posting pictures of their spa days, beach trips and visits to world heritage sites in Bangkok on Instagram that I’m starting to feel the itch myself. A friend of mine spent a year studying abroad in Thailand and had nothing but wonderful things to say.

Like many Southeast Asian countries, Thailand is known for its hospitality. Locals are always willing to extend a hand to travelers. In addition, the country is an excellent budget option for those of us who need it. Affordable lodging can be found in pretty much any part of the country and, if you stay out of restaurants and stick to local street food, you'll be surprised at how far your budget will stretch.

5. Tokyo, Japan

I’ve put Japan on the list because of their historic love of Black culture. You can go to many of the nightclubs in Tokyo and other major cities and always find hip-hop music blaring from the speakers. During my short stay in Tokyo , I heard Cardi B being played more times in one night than I ever have in my lifetime. In addition to the appreciation of our culture, you can find amazing food and extremely welcoming people. As a person who frequently travels alone, you shouldn't underestimate how important it is to have a group of locals who are willing to give recommendations and directions. 

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Brazil is known for having one of the highest populations of African people outside of the continent of Africa , with Nigerians  topping the list. There is so much to learn from the way this place has combined both African and Portuguese cultures. In Rio , there is a rich and accessible art community that travelers can take advantage of and immerse themselves in.

It should be on the bucket list for any traveler but it's especially nice to know you'll receive a warm welcome if arriving alone. Several of the major cities are known for being dangerous at night but during the day there shouldn’t be any issues as long as you stay in well-lit and populated areas – advice all women sadly have to keep in mind no matter where they travel.

Tips for African American Travelers in Japan

Japan is a small country with a deep-rooted culture. Aiyana Victoria Mathews first visited Japan as a 19-year old African-American student. After attending Benjamin E. May High School in Atlanta, she went on to pursue her undergraduate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)  and found a way to study abroad as a research scholar of rheology science at the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University.

Over the next two decades, Mathews studied the Japanese language, learned its peculiar customs, participated in colorful festivals, understood the way to do business and created Gardner-Mathews, a travel consultancy that specializes in customized itineraries for cross-cultural training, corporate concierge, and project management.

Whether you are thinking of traveling to Japan or planning to go for another visit, here are some practical travel tips from someone who calls Japan her second home.

Understand Cultural Norms

“When I first arrived in Japan I did not know how to use chopsticks, what to eat beyond sushi, or what a karaoke jukebox was. But I made friends quickly, and they taught me everything,” says Mathews about her first few months living in Chiba, a university town near Tokyo. Her strong desire to learn the local culture made her experience of living in Japan positive. She says that many of our misconceptions stem from our limited views of the world.

One of the Japanese ladies who conducted an orientation warned Mathews and her classmates as soon as they arrived. She stressed the importance of respecting all people, no matter their socioeconomic situation, age, job description or rank. “Here we respect everyone as they all serve an important purpose in society,” is advise Mathews remembers to this day. “It made me realize that it’s a person’s responsibility to dictate how he/she will be treated,” she adds.

Be an Ambassador

Being a tall black person in a foreign country can make you stand out. However, Japanese people are genuinely friendly and interested in meeting people of other races. “Yes, I felt the stares, but they were more out of curiosity than animosity,” Mathews confesses.

“When someone came to know that I spoke fluent Japanese and had lived in Japan for a while and saw that I was respectful of their culture, they bent over backward to support me. In the U.S., I would have been written off as someone who was too young and inexperienced.” Mathews frequently takes delegations to Japan for business development and networking opportunities.

Venture Out of the City

Japan is a very small country but it has a lot to see and do, and chances are there will be something of interest to you. Most people who travel to Japan stay in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo captivated by skyscrapers, busy crossing, fish markets and neon-lit pachinko arcades. You’ll soon realize that Japan is a great place to explore art, architecture, fashion, culinary arts, spirituality, temples, and nature.

Mathews says, “One of my favorite things to do is take a sunrise hike to Mt Fuji. The sky is glorious and it is also physically gratifying to make the trek.”

Talk to the Locals

One of the things Mathews suggests doing is bar hopping and talking to people. She likes to visit upscale and intimate wine bars that serve snack foods. These are popular with Japanese people who are eager to learn about foreign culture, i.e. drinking wine, so you are guaranteed to find a few people who speak English. Once a dialogue is established, they will likely offer to show you around or give you more travel tips, and it is completely safe to accept.

Don’t Make Plans

As much as you want to plan your trip in advance, allow flexibility to wander around and get lost. There are a lot of events and festivals that take place in Japan that are not advertised. Walk between train stations through quiet neighborhoods in the metropolitan and you may run into a festival with street food, temple celebrations and incredible photo opportunities. It is also a great way to see the daily way of life.

Purchase Hyper-Local Souvenirs

Wondering what to buy in Japan? Each prefecture or district in Japan is known for a specific food due to its agricultural affinity and these make for great souvenirs. Most of these are cookies or sweets with a local ingredient and it is customary to give omiyage (or travel gifts) when meeting another Japanese friend. For example, you may purchase three cheese-filled tarts from Sapporo, mentaiko (spicy salted pollock fish roe) from Fukuoka, and chinsuko (shortbread cookies) from the islands of Okinawa.

When Mathews told her family that she was going to Japan, they warned her, “It is too far and unknown. You will feel out of place.”

But that was never the case. Mathews responds, “I had no idea what to expect but learned a lot about Japan that is not obvious in guidebooks. Tokyo has a large international community with French, German and African, so race is not an issue. There are also several clubs with DJs, music performances, and karaoke bars in Tokyo frequented by African-Americans. In her final thoughts, Matthews shares, “The people are very polite and have a healthy respect for time, nature and each other. I always feel at home in Japan.”

Dominating Asia in terms of both its size and population, China boasts one of the world’s oldest civilizations. As such, incredible historical and cultural landmarks are on show wherever you go.

While the Great Wall of China is obviously its main attraction, the Terracotta Army in Xi-an and the Forbidden City in Beijing attract just as many people. Others come to enjoy China’s beautiful scenery that includes towering mountains, endless rice terraces, and the desolate Gobi Desert.

N avigating the world as a black person is not always easy and traveling while black is no different. While no destination is a complete utopia void of microaggressions or where the black experience exists in a vacuum, there are many places where black travelers have felt especially comfortable exploring, and others that are particularly exciting for black travelers this year. We tapped some of our favorite black travel bloggers and influencers to find out their favorite destinations of 2019. So whether you’re going abroad for the first time or you’re a seasoned traveler, here are six of the best places for black travelers to visit this year.

It’s been 400 years since the first slave ships departed from the shores of West Africa before arriving in the Americas. Ghanaian politicians have long been advocates of the pan-African movement. So in 2019, Ghana is welcoming people of African descent to visit with the promise of easier visa applications and a year-long calendar of culturally immersive events. As many are traveling to the country this year to connect with their ancestral roots, there has never been a better time for black travelers to visit Ghana.

First-time visitors should start their travels in the capital city, Accra. The city itself is a fusion of historical sights and modern culture. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a popular attraction to visit as it’s where the life of Ghana’s first president — a revered pan-Africanist — is celebrated. Nights in Accra are best spent dining al fresco or vibing to Afrobeats at the city’s many rooftop bars.

Rooftop parties aren’t the only thing to look forward to when visiting Ghana this year. 2019 will see a huge amount of cultural events happening to surround the Year of Return festivities. Many organized tour groups will be traveling to the country to celebrate, including the popular New Year’s Eve party in Ghana. Afrochella , the black millennial music festival, and PANAFEST , a festival celebrating the resilience and achievements of African people, should also not be missed.

After exploring Accra, travelers should get out of the capital city to see another side of Ghana. From Accra, it’s relatively easy to explore other parts of the country. A three-hour drive outside of the capital city takes travelers looking to connect with their ancestral roots to former slave dungeon, Elmina Castle. Ironically, these not-so-castle-like quarters housed enslaved Africans during what was the last stop for many before the tumultuous journey known as the middle passage or transatlantic slave trade. Also, in the region is Cape Coast, another former slave house, and Kakum National Park , an oasis in the middle of the rainforest famous known for its 350-meter-high canopy walkway.

With an exciting lineup of cultural events, important historical sites, and the welcoming spirit of the Ghanaian people, we have to believe President Akufo-Addo when he said “the time is right” for people of African descent to return home to Ghana this year.

2. Montreal, Canada

If you’ve been dreaming of going to Paris and haven’t made the leap yet, try Montreal instead. It’s the perfect destination for black East Coasters wanting to experience a new culture without the long flight or the microaggressions that often come when traveling while black around Europe.

“Montreal always gives me a little bit of everything that I need for a quick getaway. It has the beauty and charm of Paris but with less visible anti-black microaggressions than French society,” said Nasir Fleming , travel writer and content manager at Shut Up and Go .

With the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, the city is full of culinary delights. Using downtown as a starting point, foodies should eat their way through the city tasting classic dishes like poutine, a Fairmount bagel, or a smoked meat sandwich. If you’re craving some soul food, Nasir said, “It [Montreal] has prominent Caribbean and North African communities, so when strolling through the city, you’ll easily find a Haitian or a Moroccan restaurant to give you some spice in your life.”

Black African and Caribbean culture has a strong presence in Montreal. Every April Vues d’Afrique holds the Pan-Africa International Film Festival — a celebration of African and Creole culture through film. Music lovers should plan to visit in June for the annual Montreal Jazz Festival featuring famous black jazz artists like Dianne Reeves and Buddy Guy.

“[I’m not saying] that Montreal is the ultimate holy land for black people, but it’s a nice way to get away from the messiness of the states when you’re on a budget,” explained Nasir.

Many also come to Montreal for its arts scene and abundance of parks. If you’re on a budget but still need your art fix, Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts is free for everyone under 30. And every year on a Sunday in May, over 30 museums open their doors for free on Montreal Museums Day . Montreal is proof that you don’t need to travel far to experience an interesting culture. What’s more, if you can get your cultural fix without having to carry around the heavy feelings that sometimes come with traveling while black in Europe, it’s a win-win.

Senegal , the coastal West African country known for its beautiful beaches and hospitable culture is an ideal destination for black travelers. Jakiya Brown , traveler and Senegal expat said, “The culture, vibrancy, and teranga (meaning Senegalese hospitality in the local language, Wolof) is the perfect combination, especially for people of the diaspora.”

Dakar is a thriving city with art, fresh seafood, and paradise-like beaches. The city is known as the art epicenter of West Africa. The largest and oldest contemporary art show in Africa, Dakar Biennale , is held every two years and attracts visitors from all over the world. Not to mention, there are dozens of art galleries throughout the city where black travelers can purchase locally made African art.

Seafood lovers will not be disappointed in Dakar. A lot of its best dishes include freshly caught fish because the city is full of traditional Senegalese fish markets. Ceebu jën ( thieboudienne in French), Senegal’s national dish, is made from fish, rice, and tomato sauce. Black Americans with southern roots might recognize the dish as it closely resembles Southern red rice, which is popular in states like Georgia and South Carolina.

Black travelers visiting Senegal may want to pay a visit to the quiet island of Gorée. The tiny island just off the coast of Dakar is dotted with pastel-painted homes which mask its horrific past. Millions of enslaved Africans passed through the island before being shipped to the Americas. Black travelers wanting to connect with their ancestors should visit the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves). “Senegal makes for one unforgettable cultural experience, especially for black travelers, that will make you want to return “home” again and again,” said Jakiya. If it’s Caribbean food, water adventures, and Creole culture that you want, look no further than Belize. Solo world travel blogger Ciara Johnson , of Hey Ciara , said, “Black travelers should consider visiting Caye Caulker. It’s a tiny island full of character off the coast of Belize.”

The allure of the small coastal island is its relaxing feel, crystal blue water, and afro-Belizean influences. It’s easy to get to Caye Caulker from the main island of Belize City. Take a one hour ferry from Belize City with Ocean Ferry Breeze or if you prefer to fly, a regional carrier, Maya Air, flies to the island in 25 minutes. You won’t have a hard time winding down here — its tourism slogan is “Go Slow” — with an endless amount of water activities and food that is sure to give you the itis. Water sports here include jet skiing, cliff jumping, diving, and kayaking. For a taste of traditional Afro-Belizean food, indulge in a “bile up” — a Belizean creole dish including boiled eggs, fish or pigtails with plantain, yams, and tomato sauce.

Black travelers wanting to experience afro-Belizean culture a bit deeper should head to Gulisi Garifuna Museum in Belize City for a look into the traditional culture of the indigenous Garífunaia people. Just two hours south of Belize City is Hopkins Village, a small fishing village. Laruni Hati Beyabu Diner in Hopkins Village is the perfect place to go to get a taste of traditional Garífunaia food like cassava, fish, coconut, and mashed plantains — no fork needed. The natural wonders and Creole culinary delights of Belize make it a paradise island that shouldn’t be overlooked.

The allure of luxury experiences at an affordable price is what makes the UAE a popular destination. Lovers of luxury travel will want to indulge in the finer things like renting an all-inclusive yacht or jet skiing along Jumeirah Beach in Dubai. Brunch lovers should book a table at the elegant Rosewood Hotel in Abu Dhabi for their international garden brunch overlooking the waterfront. And then stick around after dining because the Rosewood turns into a party with a live DJ after 4:00 AM.

Those looking to dive into cultural experiences should head to the capital city, Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is only a two-hour bus ride away from Dubai. Multicultural cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi have attracted many black expats who often move there to lead simpler yet more fulfilling lives as compared to in the US. Sistas in Dubai is a social meetup group created for black women to bond over shared experiences living in the UAE. Gloria said, “I found the UAE to be a place where black travelers can thrive. I’ve met black entrepreneurs, engineers, and teachers through different emirates all living their best lives and I think it’s a place where you can indulge in the finer things in life without entirely breaking the bank.” So whether you’re visiting the region for a bit of culture or considering taking the leap to move abroad, there is a community of black travelers awaiting you.

Tunisia’s tourism numbers continue to recover from the 2015 terrorist attacks in the coastal city of Sousse and due to the temporary lack of mass tourism, this makes for an ideal time to explore the country.

Sub-Saharan African influences can be seen all throughout Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia. About 15 percent of Tunis’ population identifies as black. And in 1846, Tunisia was the first Arab Muslim country to abolish slavery and most recently, in 2018, it has passed legislation which criminalizes racist acts.

Black travelers wanting to connect with the black Tunisian culture should head to Jazz à Carthage in April. The festival is a celebration of international jazz that has been around since 2005, and features many black headlining artists such as Sabry Mosbah and more.

Visitors looking for some beach fun will find that traveling throughout the country to neighboring cities like Sidi Bou Said, the sun-drenched town perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, is easily accessible. The cobblestone town is a perfect day escape — it’s only a 30-minute drive from the city center. For authentic shopping, head to the souks of the medina to barter with merchants over locally made goods like rugs or jewelry.

It seems like you can’t even log onto Instagram or TikTok these days without seeing a plethora of Black women on picturesque beaches, over-the-water bungalows or exploring a beautiful foreign country. Travel offers the opportunity to experience a sense of calm, serenity or even just the ability to escape from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of our work and personal lives.

In 2019 alone, Black U.S. leisure travelers spent a whopping $129.6 billion on domestic and international travel according to “The Black Traveler: Insights, Opportunities, and Priorities,” a report produced by MMGY Global , and our purchasing power is likely to keep growing.

But behind the scenes, even the most well-traveled and respected women in travel face unseen hurdles. Because, like America, being Black seemingly makes other people uncomfortable just by our existence. Depending on the country, you have to worry about being racially profiled, stared at, or even worse — seeming so foreign that strangers will actually want to come up to you and touch you (or your hair).

Let’s also not forget the overall concern of crime and safety.

The continent’s titanic expanse of territories has always offered a diverse tapestry of to-dos—but across the region, new experiences, events, and accommodation options await. Sri Lanka is emerging phoenix-like from economic crisis and responding with a new food festival, wellness-oriented retreats, and a hiking trail that snakes through 186 miles of hill country and centuries of history. Mongolia is relaxing visa restrictions to give more people the opportunity to experience its vast, rugged landscapes, and Kochi is setting the bar high when it comes to city-wide sustainability initiatives. In the UAE , a lesser-known emirate is vying for attention, while a Japanese port city is flexing its design muscles.

Bangkok Chinatown, Thailand

Go for: a culinary renaissance in one of the world’s biggest Chinatowns

Always one of the buzziest districts in Bangkok, Chinatown makes the list this year for its ever-exciting food scene. In the year ahead, expect a new wave of restaurants to sprout in this neon-glowing nexus.

With its mom-and-pop noodle joints, incense-infused shrines, and tuk-tuks clattering through centuries-old alleyways, Chinatown has always been one of Bangkok 's buzziest districts. In the mid-2010s, chefs, mixologists, and gallerists started setting up shop in the crumbling townhouses on the district's outskirts and now, a new wave of restaurateurs is headed for Chinatown's neon-glowing nexus, Yaowarat Road. Among them is Australian chef and Thai food guru David Thompson, who, at his Chop Chop Cook Shop , riffs on recipes—buttered prawns, braised peas—from the Chinese-Western restaurants that were all the rage across Bangkok in the 1930s. Upstairs, Goldsmith Bar transforms ingredients commonly found in the neighborhood—shiitake syrup, osmanthus oolong—into heady drinks, and will soon be joined by a Chinese restaurant on the top floor and rooftop terrace.

Lucky Duck , another newcomer, has taken up residence in a historic building nearby and serves up drinks inspired by old-timey Chinese films. Perennially packed Thai restaurant Charmgang is set to open a more laid-back sibling, Charmkrung, where wines and light bites will dominate the menu; and judging from the many buildings currently concealed by tarpaulin and bamboo scaffolding, more bars and restaurants will follow suit. But how much change is too much? 2024 presents a chance to experience the charm of this storied district while still in flux. — Chris Schalkx

Da Nang, Vietnam

Go for: nature reserves, central Vietnamese cuisine, the firework festival

The “City of Bridges,” Da Nang, is a 21st century oceanfront destination linked to ancient trading hubs and imperial centers. Take advantage of new flights into Da Nang to explore the entire coast.

The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival is just one popular event in this central Vietnam city—other attractions, like distinctly local dishes, are on offer year-round.

A modern beach city located amid dozens of UNESCO -recognized sites in the country’s heartland—including the ancient port city of Hoi An and the former imperial capital city of Hue—Da Nang is one of Asia’s big post-COVID success stories, with 2023 international arrivals exceeding pre-pandemic figures, thanks in part to new flight routes that make the City of Bridges easier to get to than ever. In 2023, Vietnam Airlines reopened its popular Tokyo route, Taiwan ’s China Airlines started direct flights from Taipei, and several Southeast Asian budget airlines launched flights to the city, with plenty more in the works. Every June, more than 150 daily flights deliver tourists eager to witness the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival.

Son Tra Peninsula—located just 20 minutes from the city center—is another tourist draw, home to a 17-story, 220-foot statue of Lady Buddha, as well as endangered red-shanked douc langurs that live in the peninsula’s nature reserve. Central Vietnamese food specialties like Mì Quảng, the official noodle soup of the region, and Bánh Xèo turmeric crepes, should be another feature of any travel itinerary.

Hotel and resort developers are taking note of Da Nang’s newfound popularity. On Son Tra Peninsula, the Bill Bensley-designed InterContinental Sun Peninsula Resort recently completed an extensive 10th-anniversary renovation that includes a new club lounge, villas, and spa concept. IHG Hotel Group’s voco Ma Belle Danang opened in the city in 2023, and 2024 will herald the arrival of Da Nang’s first Mandarin Oriental property and an outpost of the wellness-driven Southeast Asian Fusion Hotel group. — Dan Q. Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Go for: lesser-known walking trails, new vantage points, an international folk festival

The Mustang Trail Race is just one of many events on the horizon for Kathmandu Valley designed to encourage visitors to embrace and immerse themselves in the Himalayan landscape.

Kathmandu Valley’s standing as Nepal ’s cultural hub will be revived in early 2024 with the return of the International Folk Festival-Nepal in March—its first in-person iteration since 2020—and the biennial Film Southasia , South Asia’s premier documentary festival, later in the year.

Atop Kathmandu Valley’s picturesque ridges lie the emergent destinations of Dhulikhel and Chandragiri, replete with hidden trails that are an unexpected alternative to Nepal’s more well-trodden and strenuous trekking routes. In Dhulikhel, Thai hospitality outfit Dusit Hotels and Resorts recently launched a charming luxury resort , while nearby, the Namo Buddha Eco Resort offers an opportunity to explore Nepal’s sustainable agricultural practices.

Bolstered by a commitment to improve the country’s tourism infrastructure with the launch of Nepal’s Tourism Decade in 2023, 2024 will see the Kathmandu Valley continue to serve as a gateway to the rest of Nepal’s tourism hotspots, with improved road and air connectivity between Kathmandu and the valleys of Pokhara and Mustang. As the 2024 additions to Pokhara’s hospitality landscape, such as Le Glamour Luxury Resort , set up in lofty vantage points across the valley, easier access to the once-remote Mustang Valley is similarly leading to the introduction of luxury accommodation options such as the stunning 29-suite Bill Bensley-designed Shinta Mani Mustang, and events such as the Mustang Trail Race, designed to encourage visitors to fully immerse themselves in this singular Himalayan landscape. — Amulya Gyawali

Kobe, Japan

Go for: high design with a sense of place

In Kobe, Japan, design-forward spaces, like the new Officine Universelle Buly skincare shop (left), are creatively building on its seafaring heritage.

Sandwiched between steep mountains and sparkling seas in southwestern Japan , the port city of Kobe is seriously strengthening its design credentials. Taking centre stage is Vague Kobe , a new creative space by Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio (TYS). Spanning the upper levels of an elegant former 1930s bank, it houses a gallery, bookstore, café, wine bar, flower shop, and design studio. In a perfectly measured showcase of contemporary Japanese design—and a reflection of Kobe’s seafaring heritage—renovated interiors combine crafted walls of traditional Japanese plasterwork and clean minimalist lines with large windows, stone floors, and ornate tilework.

Further proof of Kobe’s design ascendency was the arrival of French artisanal perfume and skincare brand Officine Universelle Buly in mid-2023, its shop and café interiors flamboyantly layered in signature style—from Kobe beef-inspired expanses of red-veined marble to chocolate-like lacquerware and “dripping” lamps. Recent plans by Trunk , arguably Tokyo’s hippest hotel group, to make Kobe the setting for its first hotel outside the capital is further evidence of the city’s prominence. And Kobe Port Tower —a panoramic observation deck on the shores of Osaka Bay—will reopen in early 2024 with a string of new facilities, including a new museum showcasing light-themed artworks and a fancy 360-degree revolving café bar. — Danielle Demetriou

Kochi, India

Go for: sustainable initiatives, stunning waterways, local festivals

Kochi's draws are modern and old-school in equal measure. For one thing, Kochi's 10 islands will become fully solar-powered by 2024. But local festivals like the ancient temple gathering of Thrissur Pooram and the Kochi-Muziris Biannale maintain the texture and history that make the place special.

Kochi’s waterways have lured visitors for centuries, its verdant backwaters, lagoons and rivers as attractive to travelers today as they were to Arab, Chinese, and European merchants in the 1300s. As one of the first in the world, its water metro system—a socially inclusive transport option connecting 10 islands along a 50-mile network—was already revolutionary when it launched in 2021, but will set the bar even higher by late 2024, when it becomes fully solar powered.

The move is part of a wider effort to transform Kerala ’s financial and industrial capital into a solar powerhouse. The city’s international airport (CIAL) is the first in the world to operate solely on solar energy and was recently upgraded with the introduction of a dedicated business jet terminal that’s the largest in India. This will be complemented by a refreshed airport hotel in mid-2024, as the current property is brought under the Taj banner and upgraded accordingly. Improvements are also underway at Kochi’s 150-year-old Ernakulam Market, which is set to unveil its years-in-the-making redesign in early 2024.

On a wider scale, Kerala Tourism 2.0, the state’s $43 million 2023-2024 sustainable tourism initiative, will focus on improving infrastructure and travel corridors between Kochi and less-visited destinations such as Munnar and Kozhikode—as well as local festivals, from the ancient temple gathering of Thrissur Pooram to the Kochi-Muziris Biennale . Meanwhile, responsible tourism operator The Blue Yonder —which created a twilight dining experience inspired by Kochi’s historic Chinese fishing nets in 2023 in Ezhikkara—offers opportunities to experience conservation-focused mangrove trails and climate-resilient Pokkali rice farms, alongside it revamped 2023-2024 Nila River voyages: two-week odysseys along the state’s cultural lifeline, from the Palakkad gap to Ponnani. — Taarika John

Go for: improved access, unique cultural festivals, and unscripted adventure

Thrill-seeking adventure travelers will always find something to love about Mongolia, and it will never be easier for them to do so than in 2024 with the first direct US flights, a new crop of nationalities who can visit visa-free, and more.

Mongolia has long been the destination for thrill-seeking adventure travelers—as participants in the wonderfully chaotic Mongol Rally will attest—but the country is expanding beyond that niche as its tourism board sets its sights on attracting a million tourists per year. In 2023, the country launched visa-free travel for a further 34 nationalities—bringing the total up to 61—in a campaign that is set to run until 2025.

The launch of new luxury lodges, cultural tours, and the announcement of the country’s first ever direct US flight, coming in 2024 to the $650-million Chinggis Khaan International Airport, further signal Mongolia’s tourism ambitions.

Following the success of the rugged-but-chic Three Camel Lodge , Mongolia’s luxury accommodation options are expanding with places such as Yeruu Lodge , which opened in 2023. Offbeat cultural experiences are one of the most compelling reasons to visit the country’s vast, rugged expanses and local operator Breanna Wilson offers some of the best. After a successful season of horse trekking and the Naadam Festival—a colorful display of strength, horsemanship, and marksmanship—in 2023, Wilson is expanding her 2024 tours to include a digital nomad week, a women-only retreat in Orkhon Valley, and a three-day archery training session with Namnaa Academy , an organization that began reviving the ancient art of mounted archery in 2020. — Ali Wunderman

Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

Go for: exhilarating adventure sports, luxurious accommodation options

Adventure tourism developments are in the works in Ras Al Khaimah's rocky mountains (and along its undersung coastline), with Jebel Jais acting as the home base for a burgeoning hiking and ziplining scene.

With its rocky mountains and low-key coastline, Ras Al Khaimah has long served as a weekend escape for UAE residents. But with several adventure tourism developments in the works and an influx of luxury properties lining up to open in the UAE’s fourth-largest emirate, there’s plenty happening now to put Ras Al Khaimah on the global tourism map. On an island just off the coast, the 174-room Anantara Mina Al Arab Resort , home to the country’s first overwater villas, will welcome its first guests in January—to be joined by a 155-room Nikki Beach Resort in 2026.

But most of the action is happening on the slopes of Jebel Jais , the UAE’s highest mountain. Among the peaks that are already home to the world’s longest zipline, adrenaline-lovers will soon be able to launch themselves into the blue beneath the canopy of a paraglider with the new Jais Wings experience. And if all that activity leaves you longing for a comfortable place to rest, the 70 luxurious rooms at nature-focused Saij Mountain Lodge will be perfect for bedding down once it opens in 2024. To top it all off, Qatar Airways resumed operating daily flights direct from its Doha hub to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in November, making this lesser-known emirate more accessible than ever. — Nicola Chilton

The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

Go for: bragging rights, pristine nature, a new take on sustainability

Saudi Arabia's Red Sea has both untouched desert and vibrant coral reefs—both of which will be part of an ambitious sustainable tourism development in the destination in 2024.

Creating a completely new tourism destination in an area of pristine natural beauty—including coral reefs that are home to critically endangered species, unspoiled desert, and dormant volcanoes—is a fine tightrope to walk. Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea aims to navigate these challenges with ambitious efforts that will make it a center of regenerative tourism, powered by 100% renewable energy. Only 22 of the more than 90 islands in the area will be developed, and nine have been designated as protected conservation areas. While many of the sustainability efforts will be behind the scenes, some are visible—and visitable.

New mangrove parks will be populated with trees currently being grown in a mangrove nursery (the project aims to plant 50 million by 2030). The first phase of the destination, which includes 16 luxury hotels, is powered by 760,000 solar panels, and the world’s first zero-carbon 5G network has already been installed. Three resorts— Six Senses Southern Dunes , Nujuma, and The St. Regis —are set to open in the coming months, each with its own strict program of sustainability measures, ranging from light-touch modular structures to intelligent landscaping, smart waste management, and local sourcing. Transport within the destination will be by e-vehicles, and hydrogen-powered seaplanes will eventually transport visitors between the islands. Whether a luxury tourist destination can ever truly be sustainable remains to be seen, but the efforts being made in the Red Sea are certainly testing the hypothesis. — Nicola Chilton

Go for: forest trails, new luxury stays, and Taylor Swift hype

Singapore's glamour has always been legendary, but things will be taken up a notch next year as Belmond returns with its long-awaited Eastern & Oriental Express—a new journey will take passengers from Singapore to Malaysia and back again come February.

Even by Singapore ’s hyperkinetic standards, 2024 is shaping up to be an unusually livewire year. March will usher in Taylor Swift hype at the National Stadium in Kallang, as the pop star lights up the waterfront venue in her sole South East Asian stop on the record-shattering The Eras Tour. Hotel bookings have reportedly surged in anticipation, right on the heels of a string of high-profile openings in 2023, including the much-anticipated Mondrian Singapore Duxton near Chinatown. Relaunches and openings will continue into 2024, with the Grand Hyatt on the plush Orchard Road-Scotts Road juncture unveiling a completely new look, and Raffles inaugurating its villa-style spa and resort on Sentosa Island .

Singapore is also adding exciting accoutrements to its impressive green quilt. At Gardens by the Bay , the country’s landscaping masterpiece, the longest sculpture in the world—a 300-foot parade depicting 60 endangered animals cast in bronze—is on display until May. Cycling paths are coming to 10 additional neighborhoods (Jurong Lake District and Punggol among them), and some will be linked to the city’s more than 300km-long green network of park connectors. A 755-foot-long forest trail and a lagoon pool will be among the highlights of the soon-to-reopen Big Sister’s Island marine park.

Not to forget Singapore’s legendary glamour, which holds sway over everything, as Belmond returns with its long-awaited Eastern & Oriental Express , kicking off a new journey from Singapore to Malaysia and back in February. In September, the country has its annual date with Formula 1 at the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit, which, as F1’s original night race, is set against a dazzling backdrop of skyscrapers and city lights. — Lakshmi Sankaran

The Silk Road, Uzbekistan

Go for: the ancient charm of the Silk Road charging into the future with new high-speed rail routes

Samarkand is one of four cities in Uzbekistan benefitting from a renewed interest in the Silk Road, with Afrosiyob, a new high-speed rail network linking its minarets and turquoise-blue tiling with the country's capital of Tashkent—and more. Routes to Khiva, 2024's tourism capital of the Islamic world, will come online next year.

For centuries, traders journeyed along the ancient Silk Road, weaving westwards from China to Iran and Turkey, sharing their stories and cultures alongside textiles, tea, and perfume. Today, four cities in Uzbekistan —Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara, and Khiva—are benefitting from renewed interest in this historic route. Explorers may once have had to contend with long, arduous journeys on camel-back, but new Afrosiyob high-speed trains have become a lifeline linking Tashkent, the country’s capital, to Samarkand and Bukhara. In 2024, this 373-mile rail network will extend to Khiva, making it even easier to explore Uzbek Silk Road cities.

While Samarkand’s minarets and turquoise-blue tiling are hallmarks of regal Timurid architecture—evident in the towering monoliths of Registan Square— Bukhara is the site of beguiling mosque complexes and age-old rug-making traditions. In Tashkent, the host of 2024’s FIFA Futsal World Cup , heritage is combined with a more cosmopolitan verve, and Swissôtel is slated to open its first property here in 2024.

Khiva, the latest rail stop, has also been declared 2024’s tourism capital of the Islamic world, perfectly positioning it to showcase the mud-and-straw walls and impeccably preserved fortifications of Itchan Kala , a UNESCO-certified inner city with over 50 historic monuments. — Lakshmi Sankaran

South and central Sri Lanka

Go for: wellness retreats, a new food festival, and a nearly 200-mile nature trail

Kayaam House is one of several openings that signals the luxury and wellness boom marking Sri Lanka's tourism industry right now.

Rising from economic uncertainty, Sri Lanka ’s tourism industry is in the midst of a luxury and wellness boom—from its tea-filled highlands to its palm-fringed shores. In the south of the country, new luxury resorts continue to entice. Among them, Kayaam House and Ahu Bay by homegrown luxury travel specialist Resplendent Ceylon; a Hilton resort next to the Indian Ocean-bordering Yala National Park, one of the best places to spot Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards; and the art deco-inspired The Charleston , which opens in December in the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. The already established Kalukanda House —a villa in surf town Weligama by British-Sri Lankan interior designer Dee Gibson—is making its mark with retreats centered on female empowerment, with yoga, breath work, reiki, and Ayurveda included.

A comprehensive renovation of the nine-room Meraki , which employs local women and offers yoga, holistic treatments, island-sourced vegetarian fare, and artisanal crafts in the Polhena Beach district of Matara, is set to be unveiled in early 2024; and luxury fitness getaway Makahiya is gearing up to launch its own brand of bespoke retreats.

In January, the Galle Literary Festival will return after a five-year hiatus, with appearances by literary figures such as Shehan Karunatilaka and Alexander McCall Smith, while Gourmet Galle , the country’s new food festival, will spotlight 12 chefs in 12 venues, ranging from beaches to paddy fields, over a 12-week period from January to March.

Inland, development of the Pekoe Trail , a new nearly 200-mile network of hiking routes that snakes its way through Sri Lanka’s highlands, continues. Traversing historic tea plantations, colonial estates, local villages, holy shrines, and forests brimming with biodiversity, it’s a novel way to experience Sri Lanka’s lush hill country, particularly when paired with stays at boutique properties such as W15 Hanthana , the luxurious Goatfell , or the Kelburne Estate , scheduled to open in December 2024. — Zinara Rathnayake

I'll be honest: It's difficult to sum up the best Asian countries to visit. Having spent years of my life on the continent, I've developed a deep love for every corner of it. If it's your first trip, however, I find that a few particular countries offer the most welcoming invitation to discover Asia's charms. Once you get the hang of it by cruising to major destinations like Thailand and South Korea, you'll feel confident — and curious — to explore more deeply on subsequent trips. For now, here's everything you need to know before you embark on an epic journey to Asia.

Believe Thailand's Hype

I felt at home from the first moment I touched down in Thailand — I felt welcome. Welcome to discover the eclectic tastes and aromas of Bangkok's street food stalls, the ornate temples and towering waterfalls up north in Chiang Rai and the myriad islands that dot the waters of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. And I felt welcome, of course, by the Thai people, whether by physical gestures like the wai  (bow) or the friendly smile everyone seems to wear in this famously happy country.

This is why Thailand is always first to mind when I'm making recommendations to first-time travelers to Asia. Practical aspects of exploring the Kingdom also contribute to this. A lot of people in Thailand speak English, so even if you don't take the time to learn a few words of the Thai language (though I absolutely recommend that you do), you'll be able to get around easily. Low-cost airlines connect Bangkok to all corners of Thailand cheaply and with amazing frequency, which further invites you to discover and explore.

Thailand is much bigger than it looks on the map, so you can easily spend a few weeks here, ideally split between Bangkok, the northern cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and island paradises like Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and beyond. However, if you want to branch out, fear not. You can travel overland from Thailand to neighboring countries like Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia, while traveler-favorite Vietnam is just a short flight away.

See The Past, Present And Future In Japan

As is the case with Thailand, hospitality makes Japan  ideal for the first-time traveler. The Japanese actually have a word for it — omotenashi . This isn't the only reason you should set your sights for Japan, however, even if there's nothing quite like a steaming cup of matcha green tea after your cruise ship pulls into Japan's port. Nor is Japan's only selling point the extremely high level of public safety you'll find here.

Japan's wealth of destinations and experiences are, first and foremost, what places it among the best Asian countries to visit. Explore megacities like Tokyo and Osaka, and then ancient metropolises like Kyoto and Kanazawa. Get up close and personal with iconic Mt. Fuji, before acquainting yourself with the paradise islands of Okinawa or the enchanting forests of the Japanese Alps, which are famous in Japan but almost unknown abroad. I recommend learning some basic Japanese phrases before you cruise there, if only so you have more ways to express your awe!

Another reason Japan should be a priority on your Asia vacation cruise ? It's a truly 365-day destination — meaning, you can't go wrong no matter when you visit. I was lucky enough on my first trip there to arrive right as spring's sakura (cherry) blossoms were reaching full bloom. I've since returned to enjoy the reds and oranges of autumn, the deep snow of winter, and the hot, humid summer. After these experiences, I can confidently say: Japan is like a different country in each season.

It Really Is More Fun In The Philippines

The Philippines is a country where every experience is a great time, even carting along a winding mountain road in a packed-to-the-gills Jeepney, a vehicle that locals in rural parts of the country use like a bus. Then there are the people: Filipinos exude a love for life that makes every interaction feel unforgettable.

Another aspect of the Philippines that makes it one of the best places to visit in Asia? The variety of attractions, of course. You'll only visit a small fraction of the thousands of islands that comprise the country, but whether you're in North Luzon at the ancient Banaue Rice Terraces or snorkeling amid the perfectly clear waters in the Coron Lagoon of Palawan in the south, you'll feel like you've set foot on another planet, where everything is paradise.

My advice when planning your trip? Pace yourself. Although the Philippines is well-connected by plane from its capital Manila , it's much bigger than it looks on the map. Pick a couple of islands to explore down south (maybe big-box Boracay or off-the-beaten path Siargao, in addition to Palawan), and then some non-beach destinations like Bohol's Chocolate Hills or Ta'al, a unique landform near Manila that comprises a lake inside a volcano inside another lake!

South Korea Punches Above Its Weight

It's difficult to find someone who doesn't regularly partake in Korean culture, whether that's enjoying a chart-topping television series on Netflix or chart-topping hits by K-pop superstars. However, while the opportunity to step into your favorite show or music video is part of what makes South Korea one of the best countries to visit in Asia for first-time travelers, my own love for the country is far deeper than that.

When I think about travel in Korea, I first have to make a distinction: There's Seoul, and then there's the rest of the country. An ecosystem more than simply a city, sprawling Seoul is a wonderland of food, shopping, culture, architecture and, well, soul. It's best to cruise to Seoul  and spend as long as you can here, whether you're traipsing through historical attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace or eating bibimbap amid the futuristic streetscapes of Myeong-dong and Itaewon.

As awesome as Seoul is, it's but one reason that Korea ranks among my favorite places in Asia. If you're an urban-minded traveler, board a high-speed KTX train to Busan (insider tip for K-culture aficionados: No zombies here!) and spend some time in this underrated port city. Otherwise, head east and explore amazing hiking in Seoraksan National Park, or fly south to Jeju, a volcanic island some call the "Hawaii of Korea" for its biodiversity and warm climate.

Hong Kong And Singapore: Cherries On Top

I love Asia because it pushes my boundaries and takes me out of my comfort zone, though sometimes I crave familiarity and even ease when exploring the continent. When this urge strikes, I usually board the next flight to one of two places: Hong Kong  or Singapore. While these cities are incredibly different from one another, they're both destinations defined by multiculturalism whose staggering wealth makes them a great place to rest and recharge.

The first time I visited Hong Kong, what struck me was its diversity. As I strolled beneath the neon lights of the bustling Kowloon district, it seemed like every person I passed was from a different country! Other appealing reasons to add Hong Kong to your Asia trip include cheap electronics shopping on offer in Mong Kok, the amazing view from Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island and the ease of discovering delicious Cantonese cuisine — think roasted duck and pork-filled dumplings — as you wander through Hong Kong's storied streets.

Singapore  is similarly eclectic — this tiny country has four official languages! One way to spend a day in Singapore is by exploring each of the city's ethnic enclaves, from Little India to Chinatown to Arab Street to Kampong Glam, home to Singapore's Malay community. You can also enjoy the city-state's diversity in terms of the activities you prioritize. Spend your afternoon shopping along Orchard Road and visiting the lush Singapore Botanic Garden. As the sun sets, ascend to the rooftop of the futuristic Marina Bay Sands Hotel for a cocktail with a view, then end amid the otherworldly "trees" of the spacey Gardens by the Bay.

What freelancer wouldn't want to be a digital nomad?

One of the top considerations one must factor in when deciding to become a digital nomad and obtain a digital nomad visa, is where they will fall in the tax bracket for foreign freelancing income in their host country.

What some people may not realize is that there are at least five digital nomad destinations that are tax-free for digital nomads, and are also budget-friendly, meaning you can gain more value out of your money, even though the cost of living is generally high in the U.S.

Let's take a look at these top five countries who have thrown open their doors to digital nomads, and why they make for appealing attractions. Kasra Dash, entrepreneur and founder of accountancy firm TaxBite , weighs in and shares his evaluation of each country—and its freelancer-friendliness—below. Best for cost-effective Caribbean living, and known for its Friendly Nations Visa, Panama offers a straightforward pathway to residency for citizens from many countries.

While not completely tax-free, Panama does not tax foreign-sourced income, which can benefit digital nomads. The country has one of the cheapest standards of living in the Caribbean, meaning you can live the island life at a fraction of the price.

2. U.A.E (United Arab Emirates)

The UAE offers a 0% income tax rate for individuals, making it a highly attractive option for remote workers, and the best for financial professionals in particular. The country also has specific visas for digital nomads, allowing them to live and work there while enjoying the tax benefits.

Applicants will need to prove employment with a company outside the UAE and have a minimum monthly salary of $5,000. This can be shown through a contract valid for at least one year, recent salary slips, or bank statements from the last three months​.

3. Costa Rica

Costa Ricans, or "Ticos", are known for their friendly and welcoming nature. The culture emphasises "pura vida" (pure life), promoting a relaxed and positive lifestyle that many remote workers find appealing for their wellbeing.

The country provides various residency options that are friendly to digital nomads, and like Panama, does not impose levies on foreign-sourced income.

4. Malaysia

Through its MM2H program (Malaysia My Second Home), Malaysia offers long-term residency options and does not tax foreign-sourced income, making it a favourable option for many nomads.

Malaysia is the best option for travel opportunities as it serves as a strategic base for travelling to other parts of Asia. Its central location offers convenient travel opportunities to neighbouring countries like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Like the UAE, Bahrain imposes no personal income tax and is considered one of the more liberal countries in the Gulf region, providing a good base for digital nomads.

Bahrain provides a high quality of life with its vibrant cultural scene, historic sites, as well as a wide variety of dining and entertainment options. It also offers excellent healthcare facilities, which is an important consideration for anyone planning to live and work remotely.

It's essential to note that due to its proximity within the Middle East, travel advisories state that you should exercise a high degree of caution and plan your travel carefully to Bahrain, keeping a close eye on tensions and war in the nearby regions. Be flexible with your travel arrangements.

Where to go in 2024: The best places to visit

So many places to see in the world. So many people eager to see them.

International tourism reached about 90% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023, and the United States issued a record number of  passports . And if you visited any popular destination over the summer, you’d probably argue it was more crowded than ever.

So maybe it’s time to look at places that are still largely undiscovered, or alluring in the offseason, or frequently overlooked for their larger first cities or neighbors. Maybe it’s time to head to places that are making it easier for tourists to visit and those that pay close attention to encouraging tourism that’s sustainable.

With those things in mind, CNN Travel chose 24 places to consider as you make your 2024 plans:

Sumba, Indonesia

For those looking for a beach destination that prioritizes community consciousness and sustainability, the Indonesian island of Sumba delivers.

With its remote villages, untouched forests, ancient rituals and world-class surf breaks, Sumba is the perfect antidote to the crowds of Bali, which is just an hour’s flight away. It might not be internationally famous yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s small. Sumba is more than 4,000 square miles in size (more than 10,000 square kilometers) – twice the size of Bali.

It was the  Nihi Sumba  resort that brought this island into luxury seekers’ sights when it first opened in 2012. More than a decade on, Sumba has welcomed several new luxury eco-resorts. These include  The Sanubari,  a series of beachfront villas that opened in 2022, and  Cap Karoso , located on the island’s southwest.  —Karla Cripps

Turkey’s Black Sea coast

Far less known than the Mediterranean yacht-magnet resorts of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, the  Black Sea region, also known as Karadeniz,  offers a very different side of the country. Less touristed and with a cooler, damper climate that produces verdant scenery and  delicious black tea , the region has historic towns and villages as well as beaches and adrenaline-producing activities.

In summer, it’s a refreshing escape from Turkey’s more sweltering regions. Visitors can explore ancient streets that still echo to the clang of blacksmith hammers in Safranbolu, soak up beach life in Amasra and climb to where one of the world’s oldest monasteries clings to a cliff at Sumela.

For thrill-seekers, there’s white water rafting, and when winter brings heavy snowfalls, the region’s eastern Kaçkar Mountains transform into a  heli-skiing paradise .  —Barry Neild

Tartu, Estonia

Pucker up. Tartu, in southern Estonia, has been named a European Capital of Culture for 2024 — with  special attention paid to kissing . One of this university city’s most celebrated sights is its statue of two students locked in a passionate embrace, but here in the “City of Good Thoughts,” the love-in is more high-minded than carnal.

Tartu is renowned as Estonia’s intellectual center, home to its oldest university as well as the must-visit Estonian National Museum and the impressive Science Centre AHHAA, the largest science museum in the Baltics.

The Old Town is the perfect place to base yourself, but just north of the city center on the banks of the Emajõgi River, Supilinn (“Soup Town”) is also worth a visit. This historic neighborhood filled with pretty, wooden houses was formerly a slum but is now becoming one of the city’s most desirable addresses.  —Maureen O’Hare

Tainan, Taiwan

Celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2024, Tainan has become a Taiwan hotspot on the international stage. This southern city has surpassed the capital, Taipei, to boast the highest overall hotel occupancy rate in Taiwan in the past two years.

What makes it so special? Tainan is considered the street food capital of Taiwan and is loved for its beef soups and oyster omelets, otherworldly natural landscapes (check out Tsao Shan Moon World), scenic sunsets over salt farms, colorful old temples and cool new museums.

Northwest Michigan

Refreshing, unsalty Lake Michigan lures boatloads of tourists in summer, but the shoreline, quaint towns and rolling countryside of Northwest Michigan have plenty to offer year-round.

On Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City makes a great home base for exploring wineries on the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas or picking cherries or apples in season. Then fall’s foliage is ripe for peeping, followed by winter’s inviting blankets of snow.

From Traverse City, the scenic M-22 highway winds up the Leelanau Peninsula and hooks back down through Leland, home to a  historic fishing village  and a collection of interesting  shops and galleries .

Glen Arbor is another town worth perusing on the way to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore , where off M-109 an all-sand, 3.5-mile hike over massive dunes to the Great Lake and back preps hardy hikers for a delicious dinner.

Farm Club , a farm-restaurant hybrid seven miles from downtown Traverse City, serves beautifully prepared dishes showcasing the region’s ingredients — many grown on site — in a minimalist, barnlike space that spills outdoors.  —Marnie Hunter

Trans Dinarica Cycle Route, Balkans

Launching in 2024, the Trans Dinarica Cycle Route will be the first and only bike route to link all eight countries of the Western Balkans. The 100-stage trail is designed for cyclists of all abilities and its 4,000 kilometers (2,485 miles) is made up of quiet asphalt roads, forest trails and bike paths.

Riders can enjoy Albania and Croatia’s spectacular coastlines, Kosovo’s national parks, Montenegro’s rugged mountains and lush woodland and sparkling rivers throughout Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Culebra, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is large and makes for a great island escape. But what if you want an escape from your great island escape? That’s where little Culebra comes in. It’s about 20 miles (32 kilometers) off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico and world away from  San Juan’s noisy, rum-soaked nightlife .

The emphasis here is on outdoor activities and unwinding. Be sure to check out  Flamenco Beach , curving for about a mile around a sheltered bay. It has little in the way of waves, making it a superb spot for snorkeling and swimming. And a graffitied tank — a US military relic — offers a striking photo op.

Much of the island is  a natural refuge , and you can also go hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and fishing. Take  a day trip  or  stay over  and make it your main destination.  —Forrest Brown

This southern African nation is trying hard to make a break on the tourism scene, having recently introduced a  quick-approval tourism e-visa . While major tourism infrastructure might not be up to speed yet, it’s a chance to explore a country still off the travel radar.

The capital of Luanda has a reputation as a pricey party city, but out in the wide-open spaces beyond, Angola has some jaw-droppingly spectacular scenery and cultural treats. Second city  Lubango  offers Portuguese colonial architecture, an impressive Rio-style Christ the King hilltop statue and access to the Tundavala Gap, a giddying plunge from cool tablelands into shimmering dusty plains.

Also worth a look: the dramatic 1,300-foot-wide (396 meters) Calendula Falls and Atlantic coastline surfing paradises such as Barra do Kwanza and Cabo Ledo.  —BN

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Not to be confused with St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, Saint John is located in New Brunswick — also on Canada’s east coast. This charming little city is an excellent base from which to enjoy the nearby  Bay of Fundy , famed for having the world’s highest tides.

The city itself is filled with historic architecture, including the  Saint John City Market , a National Historic Site of Canada. Built from 1874 to 1876, it’s filled with shops and food venues. A five-minute walk away is the  Saint John Arts Centre . Set in the city’s historic Carnegie Building, it’s the only former Carnegie Library in eastern Canada.

In terms of accommodation, there are seaside cottages, hotels, motels, campgrounds, historic inns and B&Bs. Food here is as excellent as you’d expect from a maritime city in Canada, with a broad range from cheap eats to fine dining.  —KC

South Korea

With word that “Squid Game” — still the most-watched show on Netflix — is set to return with a new season in 2024, it’s time once again to embrace the K-wave.

Thankfully, travel to the country is easier than ever before. The government is waiving its K-ETA requirement — the electronic travel visa for South Korea — for travelers from  22 countries  till the end of 2024 as part of its Visit Korea Year campaign.

This is a country that truly has it all. After exploring futuristic cities such as Seoul and Busan, the cultural and historic side of old Korea awaits at Andong, dubbed the “Spirit of South Korea,” or the seven cemeteries of the ancient  Gaya Tumuli , newly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023.  —MHW

Sandwiched on the Adriatic coast between Greece and Montenegro, it’s astonishing that Albania wasn’t more popular as a beach destination before. But its wallet-friendly prices have seen tourism boom here over the past few years — so much so that in 2023, record numbers of Italians flocked across the Adriatic for their bargain summer breaks.

2024 sees the opening of a new airport at Vlorë, on the coast, which will make those beach trips easier. But there’s far more to Albania than its coast. The country has a rich culture, including Christian and Muslim history, with historical centers in towns such as Berat and Gjirokastër, as well as jaw-dropping mountain landscapes (Theth is the most popular).

In 2023, Albania got Europe’s first wild river national park, around the 168-mile (270-kilometer)  Vjosa River  — or to go really off the beaten track book a self-drive tour with  Drive Albania .  —Julia Buckley

Stretching about 2,700 miles from top to toe, long and slim Chile offers a little something for everyone.  In the north, spectacular landscapes simulate  Mars on Earth  in the Atacama Desert, where the 51-room  Our Habitas Atacama  emphasizes sustainability.  The new hotel is a good fit for the “world’s leading green destination,” a title Chile just picked up at the World Travel Awards for the second year in a row.

The natural world puts its best foot forward all over the country: Thousands of miles of Pacific coastline to the west, the towering Andes in the east and lakes, volcanoes and wild Patagonia in the south.

World-class skiing in July and August — a welcome break from the sweltering Northern Hemisphere — is two hours or less from the capital, Santiago. And the new high-altitude Parque Nacional Glaciares near the city protects land in the country’s most populous and  historically little-protected  area.  —MH

Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia

Every year there’s another installment in the soap opera surrounding the Great Barrier Reef — will it be de-listed by UNESCO? Has the coral regrowth gone well this season?

For tourists who’d rather not wade into the situation, there’s another way to experience some of Australia’s gorgeous underwater bounty. About 37 miles (60 kilometers) off the coast of Western Australia, the lesser-known  Abrolhos Islands  are home to some of the most beautiful scenery of the country’s Coral Coast, above and below the water.

Humpback whales pass through in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, and lucky travelers may catch a glimpse of Australian Sea Lions. There are no hotels on the islands, so intrepid visitors can either overnight in the town of Geraldton or splash out for a liveaboard boat, which provides opportunities to watch brilliant sunsets over the Indian Ocean and scuba dive in the early hours when the fish are at their most active.  —Lilit Marcus

Macedonia, Greece

Athens and the islands get more crowded every year, but in northern Greece, the region of Macedonia is relatively free from overtourism. Yet it has everything visitors flock elsewhere in Greece to see: archaeological sites, history-rich towns and beaches galore.

This was the land of Alexander the Great. His father, Philip II of Macedon, is buried at Vergina, where his tomb has been turned into a world-class  subterranean museum  displaying the finds. Nearby, there are Byzantine remains in the hilltop city Veria, and superb wineries such as  Kir-Yianni  in the rolling hills around Naousa.

Thessaloniki — the region’s capital and Greece’s second city — is a gastro hub as well as a mishmash of architectural and archaeological eras. Near the city are the sandy beaches of Halkidiki; toward the border with Thrace are archaeological spots like ancient Philippi, and the city of Kavala, whose Ottoman past shows in every building . —JB

It may be most famous for the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, but this Central American country is so much more than a transit destination.

Not only does Panama have a vibrant capital city with a historic old quarter that’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the country also holds over a dozen national parks, including Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama.

Galicia, Spain

Empty beaches bordered by the wild Atlantic Ocean and framed by the rugged landscape of the  Islas Atlánticas National Park . Mouth-watering seafood. And a historic city forever entwined with the famed  Camino de Santiago.  Welcome to Galicia, an autonomous region in the northwest tip of Spain.

Galicia’s regional capital city,  Santiago de Compostela , has long been on the tourist map thanks to its striking 12 th -century cathedral, which is the endpoint for the hundreds of thousands of walkers who  embark on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage  each year. But even if you weren’t planning on packing your walking boots, bustling Santiago should be on your radar.

Singapore’s offshore islands

The city-state of Singapore shows urbanism at its finest: biophilic skyscrapers, neon-lit supertrees and six-star hotels all outdoing each other to redefine “luxury.” But venturing off the peninsula is quickly becoming a more interesting option.

Singapore is developing some of its smaller, uninhabited islands by, well, not developing them. Just a ferry ride away from the mainland, Lazarus Island is now home to a few rentable tiny houses made with reconstituted wood and powered by solar energy. Nearby, Sisters’ Island will open the country’s first marine park — including a sea turtle hatchery and coral protection area — in 2024.

Already open for exploring is St. John’s Island, where a 1.7-mile trail highlights native plants and flowers while shining a light on the island’s colorful history, which included a period as a quarantine center during a cholera outbreak. It’s a fitting place to think about life after a pandemic.  —LM

Mérida, Mexico

The Yucatán Peninsula is best known for its tropical beaches, but venture inland, and you’re in for an unexpected urban treat.

“Mérida’s uniqueness comes from a blend of Mayan and colonial heritage,” said David Casanova, who has a  real estate YouTube channel  on Yucatán state’s capital city with his wife, Megan Sequeira Casanova. “The city’s excitement starts with its diverse cuisine and friendly locals and expands to its year-long favorable weather.”

In town, Paseo de Montejo is lined with historic mansions, museums, art galleries and local vendors. The Casanovas tout the city’s boutique hotels, including  Kuka y Naranjo . For nearby getaways, there’s Progreso Beach (less than an hour away), fascinating Mayan ruins and underground water caves called cenotes.

If you’re concerned about personal safety in Mexico, the  US State Department  rates Yucatán and Campache states as the two safest as of December.  —FB

A longtime travel favorite thanks to its diverse landscape and spectacular architecture, Morocco has bounced back determinedly after a devastating earthquake this past September.

While visitors tend to congregate in popular cities such as Marrakech, Rabat and Fes, the country certainly isn’t short of less crowded spots that are arguably just as alluring. Standouts include Tétouan, the city near the first  Regis Hotels and Resorts Morocco property , and the historic Meknes, which is among the country’s nine UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Morocco is proving to be a world leader when it comes to sustainable tourism, with the launch of various initiatives to boost its renewable energy generation. The country is also home to a number of significant eco-friendly hotels, including the Berber-run  Kasbah du Toubkal , located at the base of the spectacular High Atlas Mountains.  —THG

Florida’s freshwater springs

How would you like to immerse in water clear as gin any day of the year? You can do that in some of the 1,000 or more recognized  fresh-water springs  scattered around northern and central Florida.

These  pristine natural pools  provide stable temps and visibility for swimming, tubing, snorkeling, diving, wildlife viewing and more. Here are a few of the best:

Wakulla Springs  has a swimming area in 70 F (21 C) degree water, and the state park offers a boat ride tour. The  depth at the vent  is about 185 feet (56 meters).  Rainbow Springs  is considered one of the most beautiful in the state.  Ginnie Springs , a privately owned site, is renowned for its diving and cavern.  —FB

Texas Hill Country

In the heart of Texas, Hill Country boasts its own natural springs. One prime spot,  Krause Springs  in Spicewood, lures visitors with more than its spring-fed pool and natural swimming hole — there’s also a butterfly garden full of magical wind chimes. And the  Blue Bonnet Cafe  — home to some of the world’s most divine cream pies — is just a short drive away in Marble Falls .

Meanderers will also find rolling hills and hiking trails, winding rivers,  wineries , barbecue, music and dance halls, plus an explosion of wildflowers in March and April. And in 2024, April also brings a celestial spectacle to Hill Country — the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Gruene Hall  in New Braunfels is legendary among Texas’  historic dance halls , and Luckenbach, a tiny hamlet outside the larger German-influenced town of Fredericksburg, has a dance hall and regular pickers’ circles under the oak trees.  —MH

One of the smaller and lesser-known emirates of the United Arab Emirates, Fujairah is as mellow as it is beautiful. Filled with spectacular mountain ranges and pristine beaches, it’s significantly less developed than the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, offering an authentic and tranquil vibe that’s hard to beat.

Fujairah has a cooler climate compared with the other emirates because of its mountainous setting, but the winter months are definitely the most pleasant time to visit.

Snoopy Island, a snorkeling spot that looks like the famous cartoon dog lying on his back, is a top draw thanks to its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, while the cascading waterfalls of the Wadi Wurayah National Park are another must-see.  —THG

The jaw-dropping landscapes of Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark situated northeast of Canada — are set to get a little more accessible for international travelers this year.

New international airports are opening in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, and the coastal city of Ilulissat. These aviation hubs promise longer runways that will be able to handle larger commercial aircraft. The climate crisis is a visible, real threat in Greenland, and investment in the tourism sphere is increasing as changing climates  pose roadblocks to traditional industries.

Learn more about how Greeenland is adapting, and the stories of the Inuit people who’ve lived in the region for thousands of years at the  Icefjord Centre  in Ilulissat on the West Coast. Colorful Ilulissat is also home to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, which offers the staggering sight of a bay filled with floating icebergs.
