Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. You’ve booked your tickets, renewed your passport and replaced your storage-worn hiking boots with new kicks. Everything seems to be shaping up for your first overseas trip in a while.

Although countries continue to lift this requirement over time, it’s always advisable to check the most updated information online.

1. FWD Travel Insurance – the popular, affordable choice

FWD’s travel insurance is a popular choice for budget-conscious travellers, with prices starting at just a few dollars per day.

Among all the travel insurance plans out there, FWD is known for having one of the most affordable options of them all. For those who don’t want to spend so much time researching, FWD is the easy choice.

Their plans range between S$25 and S$44 a week, though an additional Covid-19 coverage will set you back by S$40 to S$70 a week. 

It covers a pretty comprehensive list, with the following for a premium plan (the most basic plan offered): trip disruption (S$300 for delays, S$7,500 for cancellations), overseas medical expenses (up to S$200,000), 24h emergency assistance and S$200 per day if hospitalised overseas (up to S$5,000).

In addition, the plan covers your travel-related expenses if you were to get diagnosed with Covid-19 within 30 days before your scheduled departure. And should you get infected within 14 days of returning to Singapore, your medical expenses will be covered too.

The insurance policy automatically extends (up to 21 days) if you’re prevented from travelling, either by local or by foreign regulations, due to close contact with a Covid-positive person.

2. ChangiAssure Travel Insurance – the affordable and convenient choice

3. Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines – the convenient choice for SIA regulars

For regular travellers on Singapore Airlines, the new Travel Protect insurance plan is a convenient choice for comprehensive overseas protection.

Those flying with Singapore Airlines are automatically offered the option to add SIA’s travel health insurance to their flight booking. 

Premiums for its Travel Protect plans which are underwritten by Allianz Insurance Singapore Pte. Ltd. are affordable and competitive compared to other insurers. For a slightly higher premium than the previous two plans, this policy provides a higher payout for the usual things like baggage (S$1,400 for delays, S$4,000 for lost, damaged or stolen luggage) and trip disruptions (S$1,500 for delays and S$10,000 for interruptions or cancellations). 

It also provides generous emergency coverage (S$500,000) and emergency transportation coverage (S$300,000).

4. Sompo Travel Insurance – the insurance for a rainy day

If you are planning for your travels and wish to be covered for trip cancellation, postponement or disruption due to Covid-19, you could consider Sompo Travel Insurance. Their Covid-19 plan covers pretty much everything you’d need a travel insurance to do, plus features that cover trip cancellations and disruptions due to Covid-19. As its top features cover more extensive coverage due to Covid-19, the premiums would be priced slightly higher than other travel insurance. 

At its base, it already covers overseas medical expenses (S$200,000) and trip disruptions (S$800 for delays and S$5,000 for cancellations), but what gives the policy additional breathing room is its extended Covid-19 coverage. 

It includes Covid-19 medical expenses (S$100,000), cash (S$700 for hospitalisation, S$700 for quarantine) and Covid-19 trip cancellation (S$2,000).

5. NTUC Income Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance – the insurance to calm worried minds

Choose NTUC travel insurance if you require your pre-existing conditions to be covered.

Insurance claims tend to get a little trickier if you’ve got pre-existing conditions. Not all travel insurance covers pre-existing conditions, so be sure to make a check if you require this feature. 

If you require coverage for that, then NTUC Income Travel Insurance might be the way to go. 

For S$57, the plan comes with S$200,000 personal accident coverage and S$500,000 medical expense coverage. Of this medical expense, claims due to pre-existing conditions are capped at S$150,000.

As for Covid-19 coverage, it includes: trip disruptions (S$2,000 for delays and cancellations, S$200 per night for accommodation), overseas medical expenses (S$150,000) and cash (S$1,400 for quarantine). 

Should the policyholder test positive and require hospitalisation or quarantine, the policy will be automatically extended for up to 14 days at no extra costs.

For those travelling in groups, there are family plans (which typically cover 2 adults and kids up to age 21) and group plans (for unrelated adults). For family plans, signing up is easy and fast as only the adults’ particulars need to be furnished (some only need one set of particulars from one of the adult travellers). 

For group plans, ensure that you are travelling on the same dates as your travel buddies and purchase yourinsurance together. Such plans provide more savings, with discounts provided.

How to Claim Travel Insurance? A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide (2022)

Nobody ever wants to make travel insurance claims unless they really, really have to. Why? Because it’s troublesome, lah .

It’ll always be a hassle to fill up forms and rustle up the required documents, but just like waxing your legs, if you already know exactly what to do and how to prepare, the entire process can be relatively quick and painless — easy-peasy !

1. Common travel insurance claims

What is the most common travel insurance claim?

Think it’s loss of baggage? You’re way off.

If you were to guess medical expenses or personal accident, you’d be closer, but that would still not be the answer.

In actual fact, flight delays are what most travellers experience, and it’s not surprising, especially when you consider the preference for budget airline travel.

Flight delays

Let’s be fair here, flight delays could happen to anyone, due to a myriad of reasons. It could be a mechanical fault with the plane, bad weather, or naming your airline Scoot. Whatever the reason, flight delays can really put a damper on your plans.

Lost or Damaged Luggage

You hope it never happens to you, but when your luggage looks like everyone else’s (especially if all of you got it from the same credit card roadshow) there’s always a chance that someone else may have disappeared with your luggage. Alternatively, your suitcase may be too heavy for a tired, overworked airport staff to handle, and they may drop it, damaging the contents.

Luggage delayed

You’re lucky enough that your baggage isn’t lost, however, because a budget airline decided that your suitcase needed a short vacation away from you, you find yourself without clothes and more importantly, without your Macbook Pro for several hours! Leaving you to use… a PC at the hotel lobby. Such a travesty.

2. How do I make a travel insurance claim [Step-by-step guide]

So, the thing about travel insurance is that people only remember it when something unpleasant messes up our travel plans. Then, we panic and scramble when the insurer asks for things like the purchase receipt of a DSLR camera bought 6 years ago.

Sound familiar? If yes, here’s a pro-tip — be familiar with what you can and can’t claim for, and make sure you have a rough idea of the supporting documents needed.

It’s good practice to have a copy of your insurance policy on your phone, so you can always check it as and when you need, even on the go. Some travellers also have a habit of snapping photos of their luggage and belongings before the trip, just in case anything gets lost, delayed or damaged.

The exact claim procedure will depend on your insurance company, but generally, the process goes like this:

Step 1: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible

Depending on your policy, there is usually a time limit as to how long you can wait to give written notice about your intention to claim.

Usually it’s 30 days, but even then you shouldn’t be taking your time. Remember that you may need to get others involved, like the police or your GP, and that will take time.

Step 2: Download and fill up the travel insurance claim forms

Not all travel claims forms are made equal. Make sure you know what you’re claiming for – if you’re claiming on medical grounds, or if there was a delay or cancellation, or even if it’s both.

Choosing the right form is important because leaving any blanks in the form could cause delays in the claim process.

Also note that, for claims that are a result of illness, injury or death, you may need a GP or Specialist to fill up sections of the form for you. Yes, that means even if you’re claiming for travel cancellation due to sickness, you will need to get your GP or Specialist to certify that your illness did not exist, or that you were not aware of it, before booking the trip.

Step 3: Prepare your supporting documents

This is the biggest cause of delayed or rejected claims, so make sure you have everything you need before filing the claim.

Other than a completed claim form and a copy of the policy/certificate of insurance, you will also need to include your passport/itinerary to prove that you had travelled or at least made travel plans.

Then there’s a whole list of supporting documents you’ll need to provide depending on the type of claim you’re making.

Generally, if it requires a police report, you will need to report it to the local police within 24 hours of the incident.

Also, if you intend to claim for belongings that were damaged or stolen, you’d need to produce the original purchase receipts and photos of it to prove that you own these items.

If you are a hardcore “KonMari” fan and have tossed the receipts for all your fancy gadgets — cameras, laptops, etc — then it’s best not to travel with these items.

Step 4: Submit your claims documents online, in person or via snail mail

Once you’ve got everything you need, you can officially file the claim. Most insurers now have online platforms for easy submission, which is great for the younger, more tech-savvy crowd.

I’ve personally done medical expenses claims via FWD’s website and it was surprisingly fast and seamless.

For those who prefer to do it offline, you can either mail your documents over or head down to the branch office directly.

3. Covid-19 travel insurance claim

Travel insurance companies these days have extended their coverage for Covid-19, but at a cost. It’s usually a $20 to $40 dollar add-on, and you need to check if your insurer requires you to take and receive a negative PCR test result immediately after buying your policy.

In the event that you do catch Covid-19 before, during or after your trip, here are the things you need to do:

4. How long do travel insurance claims take?

Typically, claims take a week to a month to be processed. The first thing to do is to make sure they’ve received your supporting documents.

If you haven’t heard anything from them in 2 weeks, you should definitely be pro-active and contact your insurer. The last thing you want to hear is that they hadn’t even started processing your claims because you left something out, and weren’t informed.

5. My travel insurance claims were denied and rejected

Should you appeal? Yes you should.

If your claims were denied, the insurer is obligated to provide you with a valid reason and the grounds for their decision. Once you get that, you can then request for claims appeal .

What happens moving forward depends on the insurer and how they handle your case, but let’s be honest here: there is always a conflict of interest when making an insurance claim.

Your agenda is to get as much compensation as possible. An insurance company’s agenda is to reduce your claim as much as possible. So yes, you can appeal, but it may not always be successful.

6. Mistakes causing your travel insurance claims to be rejected

So, you’ve bought travel insurance. Now it’s time to go skydiving and swimming with the sharks. Right? Not so fast.

Travel insurance isn’t a “get out of jail free” card that magically frees you from having to pay any expense you incur due to stupid mishaps.

In fact, if you actually take the time to read your travel insurance policy, you’ll realise that there’s actually a truckload of things you can do to get your claims thrown straight into the bin.

Here are 5 common travel mistakes that may cause your travel insurance claims to be rejected:

Playing in a competition or tournament

Participating in a seemingly harmless game of football may not exactly be as exciting as jumping off cliffs into the ocean, but suffer an injury during the game and you could well get your insurance claim for medical expenses rejected.

Read your insurance policy carefully to see if cover is excluded if you participate in a competition or tournament. Beware, as any sporting event that gives you the opportunity to win a prize might be considered a competition.

That means if someone punches your lights out during the drunken muay thai boxing event organised by that Thai pub, you won’t get covered.

Risky activities

Many Singaporean tourists flee the country to escape from boredom during the holidays, since there’s so much more fun stuff you can do overseas, like skydiving and bungee jumping !

But before you sign yourself up for that motorcycle drag race, know that many travel insurance will not cover you for injuries or losses suffered in the course of high risk activities, which often include flying planes for hobby or sightseeing, racing any kind of vehicle, skydiving, and even rock climbing on actual rocks, as opposed to artificial rock walls.

Consuming alcohol or drugs

Virtually everyone has gotten smashed overseas. Every day of the year, Singaporeans are spotted disembarking at the Phuket and Bangkok airports and heading straight to the duty free shop to buy a bottle of Martell. But guess what, if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you probably aren’t going to be able to make a claim for anything that happens to you during that time.

That means getting run over by a tuk tuk after a night out at the Thai discos is going to be even worse than you imagined. Bear in mind that your travel insurance covers more than just medical expenses. If you injure someone else and become liable at law or lose your passport while drunk or high, you will lose your chance to make some big claims.

Pre-existing medical conditions

The thing people are most concerned about when they buy travel insurance is making sure their medical expenses will be covered when they’re overseas. It’s worth noting that most basic travel insurance policies will not cover pre-existing medical conditions. As sinister as “ pre-existing medical conditions ” sounds, it isn’t restricted to deadly terminal diseases.

If you broke your leg two years ago and then break it again while you’re overseas, you might not be able to make a claim for medical expenses incurred. If you were recently injured or have a medical condition like diabetes or anaemia, you might want to consider upgrading your insurance so it includes pre-existing medical conditions, just in case something happens and you run into problems when trying to make a claim.

Not making a police report ASAP

Before you heave a sigh of relief that your insurance policy offers coverage if you lose your passport or laptop, beware. To make sure people don’t try to make claims for forgetting their stuff on the train or trying to pawn their belongings, most insurance policies require that you make a police report or contact the authorities within 24 hours of the loss.

This can be a pain in the neck if you’re in a remote area or you lose your stuff over a public holiday or weekend when the embassy is closed. Still, knowing you have a lot more to lose in insurance money, make sure you lodge a report by hook or by crook.

A Vietnamese tourist was caught on camera walking through Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) security naked after police sought payment from her for overstaying her visa.

The incident involving the 34-year-old happened at the airport in Manila, Phillipines, on Saturday, according to Thailand-based media outlet Viral Press. At least two Filipino media outlets – The Manila Times and Journal Online – identified the woman as Thuytrang Nguyen and said she was headed for Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, when she stripped off all her clothing.

Nguyen argued about whether she needed to pay to leave the country where she vacationed. She then went to the restroom and came out a few minutes later in her birthday suit and could be seen on video walking through security gates and a body scanner. 

"We don't know why she did that," NAIA Terminal 3 Airport Police Officer 1 Michael Ronald de Guzman told Viral Press. "We learned that the woman went to immigration and was allegedly offloaded. She was due to fly to Saigon, but her visa had issues."

Security guards were able to stop Nguyen before giving her clothes, food and drinks. She was referred to as "distressed," "disturbed" and "furious" in media reports about what happened. 

"She appeared a little irritable because she couldn't communicate in Tagalog, and she didn't speak English well," General Manuel Sequitin, assistant general manager for Security and Emergency Services told Viral Press. "She only knew Vietnamese, so we were communicating with her through Google Translate."

What we know about mass flight cancellations at Manchester Airport

Manchester airport has warned travellers not to come to terminals 1 and 2 after a major power fault damaged vital equipment. here's what we know so far..

All flights have been cancelled from two terminals in Manchester Airport after a “major power cut” led to huge queues and disruption to baggage processing.

Passengers have been advised against coming to terminals 1 and 2 until further notice, while travellers flying from terminal 3 have also been warned to expect delays.

Meanwhile, a number of arriving flights were being diverted to other airports, with one Singapore Airlines flight from Houston Texas diverted to London Heathrow.

Another from Singapore was forced to land in London Gatwick, while an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport was diverted to Birmingham Airport.

Manchester Airport said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and aim to restore normal service as soon as possible.”

With the airport continuing to face huge queues of frustrated travellers, here's what we know so far about the power outage and why it has caused so much disruption.

What we know

Manchester Airport was hit by a major power outage in the early hours of Sunday morning, and although its back-up generator kicked in, the incident still resulted in a series of faults to the security and baggage systems.

In a statement, the airport's managing director Chris Woodroofe said: "There was a big power spike in our electrical system due to a failure early on this morning, and that's damaged some really key equipment.

"That's meant that terminal 1 and terminal 2 haven't been able to depart aircraft today, and as a result, they haven't had aircraft be able to land as arrivals because there's no space to park those aircraft.

"It's a very difficult situation, I couldn't be more sorry and the good news is that we very much expect this to be recovered over the afternoon and evening so that we're back to normal operations tomorrow."

While the airport was able to restore power via its generators, security systems that communicate with Border Force and the baggage systems are "not designed to be turned off and take time to get back up and running", the Telegraph reported.

At 6.30am on Sunday the airport advised passengers due to travel to terminals 1 and 2 to contact their airlines for up-to-date information before showing up. At 7:45am, the airport announced the power had been restored, but still warned passengers to expect cancellations.

An hour later the airport advised against anyone travelling to terminals 1 and 2 until further notice, although passengers were still advised to come to terminal 3 despite the prospect of delays.

There have been instances where some people’s baggage was not on flights. Some passengers who had already checked in were scheduled to depart, but operator the Manchester Airports Group warned that due to the morning's disruption, "some baggage may not be on those flights".

"We will work with airlines and handling partners to reunite affected passengers with their luggage as soon as possible", it added.

EasyJet, which operates flights from terminal 1, said there were “very long queues” for security and disruption to hold baggage processing, meaning passengers could board flights only with cabin luggage.

It said: “Although outside of our control, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced as a result. We are doing all we can and working closely with the airport team to minimise the disruption.”

What we don't know

It is not clear exactly what caused the original power outage that preceded the power spike that damanged equipment at Manchester Airport.

We also don't know what arrangements are in place to reunite travellers who left without their luggage, and what sort of compensation they could be entitled to.

While Woodroofe has said he expects operations to return to normal by Monday, it is unclear how much of a knock-on effect the weekend's chaos will have on travel next week.

‘Significant number of flights’ at Manchester Airport disrupted due to power cut

Manchester Airport, one of the UK’s busiest airports, has been hit by a power cut, causing delays and disruption for its passengers.

A “significant number of flights” operating from the airport in northern England have been impacted by a “major” power cut in the area, the airport said in a statement on Sunday.

“Manchester Airport was affected by a major power cut in the area earlier this morning. This has caused widespread disruption and a significant number of flights, particularly from Terminals 1 and 2, are expected to be delayed or cancelled,” the airport said.

Footage posted to social media showed long lines building up at the airport’s terminals, with passengers expressing their frustration at the delays and lack of information provided.

“Thousands of people were stood around outside just being told to queue for baggage, with the only announcements being the same, ‘Thank you for your patience,’” said Eva Horsefield, a passenger who was waiting at the airport. “1000s of people were sat on the cold floor for 6+ hours,” she added.

Katie McGovern said the situation was “awful.” She arrived in Manchester from Fuerteventura with her four-year-old daughter at 1:25am local time. They waited in long lines for passport control and were told to go to a different terminal – a 40 minute walk – to retrieve their luggage.

“No pram offered, no water, no chair to help get her there. When we did, it was rammed, people running about, nearly taking out my daughter,” she told CNN.

“My daughter fell asleep on the floor with people running around her – it was horrendous,” she said. Eventually, they arrived home at 8:30am.

The airport has since said “power has been restored,” but reiterated that a “number of flights are likely to be cancelled.”

The airport has advised passengers due to fly from Terminals 1 and 2 “not to come to the airport until further notice and to contact their airlines.” According to the airport’s website , 46 flights departing from Manchester today have been cancelled.

Those traveling from Terminal 3 should proceed to the airport as usual, it said. However, the updated statement noted that they “could be affected by delays.”

The airport also noted that it is working to get passengers already at the airport on their flights, but that the “disruption caused by the outage means in some instances baggage may not be on those flights.”

Sam Martin and his friend were meant to arrive in Manchester after a 38-hour journey from New Zealand via Singapore. As they started their descent over Manchester, their plane was turned around and landed at London Heathrow this morning.

“This journey was meant to bring us home,” said Martin, speaking to CNN from the plane on the tarmac.

After more than two hours of waiting, a manager from Heathrow came aboard and announced that Manchester would not be accepting any flights. A little after 1pm local time, nearly four hours after they arrived, passengers were allowed to disembark the plane and have since been told they will be put on a coach to Manchester.

Richard Bromley was waiting for his brother to arrive on a KLM flight from Sydney, via Amsterdam when he found out the flight had been cancelled.

His brother has now been put on a flight for tomorrow, scheduled to land at Humberside Airport – over 100 miles away from Manchester, and with more than 24 hours delay.

LONDON:  All flights from Terminals 1 and 2 at the UK’s Manchester Airport have been cancelled after a power cut in the area caused widespread disruption, airport authorities said in a statement on Sunday.

The airport also said on social media platform X passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline but could be affected by delays.

At least 20 per cent of all outgoing and incoming flights were cancelled, a Manchester Airport spokesperson said, adding that it expected further disruption.

Earlier aviation analytics firm Cirium said 66 departures and 50 inbound flights had been cancelled with easyJet experiencing the largest number of cancellations.

The power cut led to problems with airport security and baggage systems, according to Chris Woodroofe, the airport managing director. Flights resumed in the afternoon.

Woodroofe said on social media he expected flights to be "back to normal operations" on Monday.

Flights diverted

Manchester Airports Group, which also operates London Stansted and the East Midlands airports, said the airport had been “affected by a major power cut in the area earlier this morning” and passengers at two of the three terminals were told to stay away.

"We will work with airlines and handling partners to reunite affected passengers with their luggage as soon as possible", the group added.

The airline Jet2 - which operates from both terminals - said that as well as cancelling dozens of flights, it was unable to load bags onto planes as the airport's baggage system remained "inoperable".

Airline easyJet, which operates flights from Terminal One, warned of "very long queues" for security, and said passengers could only board flights with cabin bags. In addition, some arriving flights were being diverted to other airports according to the airport statement, including London Heathrow and Birmingham.

The Manchester Airports Group, which also operates London Stansted and the East Midlands airports, earlier said Manchester Airport had been “affected by a major power cut in the area earlier this morning.” “This has caused widespread disruption,” the group said on social media.

Passengers for Terminal Three were told to come to the airport as normal but warned they “could be affected by delays”.

Some flyers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to describe the “chaos”, with one passenger saying there was “baggage thrown on any carousel” and another saying they were “stuck on the plane”.

The UK’s travel industry has been hit by a series of disruptions in the last few years, including technical problems and industrial action affecting rail and air passengers.

Last month, a nationwide outage of immigration e-gates caused long delays for thousands of passengers.

In August last year, the country faced its worst air traffic control disruption in almost ten years due to a technical fault.
