Undergraduate Admission

Home of the traditionally forward-thinking.

This place is known for defining what’s next. But that visionary mindset stems from rich traditions that we’re proud to honor, continue and share.

A CMU student pushing a Buggy at CMU's Carnival Sweepstakes

Living the tradition

We take our rich traditions and reinvent them in unconventional ways — because that’s what this place was designed to do from day one.

Great Scots

No matter where you’re from, you’ll be proud to be a Tartan. Our founder’s Scottish heritage is woven into the fabric of our university in many ways: our beloved mascot (Scotty, the Scottish Terrier), our official Tartan colors, our Kiltie Band and one of the nation’s only bagpipe majors.

Paint Out Loud

Painting the Fence is a time-honored Carnegie Mellon tradition, but it comes with a strict set of rules: You have to do it between midnight and sunrise, in its entirety, using only paintbrushes. Want to make sure your message stays up? You’ll need to guard the Fence around the clock — which can be just as much fun as painting it.

Student ambassadors posing at The Fence.

Spring Carnival

Here, you’ll find plenty of ways to let loose and have fun — especially during our annual Spring Carnival, where you can see musical performances, ride a roller coaster, watch a talent show and meet with alumni.

The highlight of the event is the Booth and Buggy competitions, where Carnegie Mellon students team up to show off their creativity through multilevel structures and lightning-fast aerodynamic vehicles.

Students at CMU's Carnival Sweepstakes covered in colorful paint

Structured creativity

In Booth, student organizations build elaborate one or two-story structures with a game all designed around the yearly Spring Carnival theme. Booths are displayed side by side along the midway parking lot for all Carnival-goers to enjoy.

CMU students participate in Buggy races during Spring Carnival

Powered by brains and brawn

Buggy is the highlight of Spring Carnival. Part high-tech soapbox derby and part relay race, Buggy is uniquely Carnegie Mellon. Student teams compete in a five-person relay race through neighboring Schenley Park. Teams include pushers and a driver. The pushers propel their buggy through the uphill sections of the course, while the driver steers through the downhill portions of the course reaching speeds of 35 miles an hour!

Diversity Fly-in Programs Make Campus Visits Accessible

Some private schools pay for prospective students to tour and stay on campus.

Fly-in Programs Make College Visits Free

Fly-in programs give students from groups that are typically underrepresented on campus an opportunity to thoroughly explore top schools.

College diversity programs that pay for high-achieving high school seniors – who are usually low-income, first-generation or students of color – to visit campus, give teens who can't afford to travel out of state for a college tour the opportunity to try the college experience.

The programs, typically called "fly-in" or multicultural programs, are two- to three-day college tours for prospective or admitted students from underrepresented backgrounds. Some schools invite all students to apply but give preference to low-income students .

"We’re really taking a look at those low socioeconomic students, the students who wouldn’t traditionally have that opportunity to come onto campus," says Miguel Alvarez, senior assistant director of undergraduate admissions at Carnegie Mellon University, a private National University in Pennsylvania.

Colleges often cover all the transportation, food and housing costs for students during their visit. In most cases, parents who want to join their teen will have to pay their own way. One exception is Vanderbilt University. The Tennessee-based private national university pays for admitted students and one of their parents to fly out for a day, with the option of an overnight trip.

Fly-in programs give participants an opportunity to imagine life as a college freshman. Teens get an extensive look at student life, build connections and see if they can manage without having their parents nearby .

Prospective college students who attend these programs get an explanation of the admissions process that will be beneficial even if they don't apply to the school they visit, experts say. Admitted students get the opportunity to make sure the college meets their needs and expectations before they enroll. And the programs can give both groups of students enough support to ease the transition to college.

Participants meet admissions and financial aid counselors, sleep in a dorm room with a student host, attend classes, chat with current students who come from similar backgrounds, talk to professors, eat in the dining halls and possibly get a peek at the surrounding community.

"It was a lot easier knowing that I had some sort of connection and establishment to the place where I was going to, so I didn't have to worry about how everything was ultimately going to work together," says Praise Hall, a 19-year-old freshman at Bowdoin College.

The Minnesota native, who attended fly-in programs at three liberal arts colleges, said the programs helped her narrow her college list and made it easier to move away from home since the campus, community and people felt familiar when she arrived.

Depending on the school, students may be able to set up individual appointments with financial aid officers and do admissions interviews. The programs are structured but may offer varying degrees of flexibility or free time.

To prepare for a fly-in program, college admissions officials encourage students to research the schools they want to visit, prepare questions for every phase of the program and take detailed notes.

"Be comfortable being uncomfortable; everything about this is different," says E. Whitney Soule, dean of admissions and financial aid at Bowdoin College, a private liberal arts college in Maine. "You're staying with people you don't know, you're traveling alone to get here – just embrace that this is an entirely new experience and really ask questions."

Most programs for prospective students occur in September or October to give students time to visit before they submit applications. But there are exceptions: Carnegie Mellon offers its first program in November. Programs for admitted students are likely to occur in April before enrollment deposits are due.

Finding programs will take some work. Fly-in programs that host students before they apply to college are usually offered at private National Universities and Liberal Arts Colleges .

College Greenlight, an online search platform that connects first-generation and underrepresented students with scholarships, counselors and colleges, publishes a list of colleges and universities that offer the programs every spring. The organization is a former contributor to the U.S. News Scholarship Search Insider blog.

Many schools that have fly-in programs will have information on their website, but some programs are invite only. Applications for programs for prospective students typically open in the summer.

The table below includes a list of the top 25 Liberal Arts Colleges and National Universities that offer fly-in programs to prospective college students, had information about their programs online or responded to a U.S. News request for details.

Find Fly-In Programs at Top-Ranked Colleges

Visit on a desktop to see the entire table, including school ranks.

Fly-in programs are competitive. Schools may receive around 900 applications for 100 slots. Prospective students will likely have to fill out an application, write an essay, provide a letter of recommendation and submit a transcript that includes their junior year grades and ACT or SAT test scores.

Prospective students may be asked a couple of questions about their household income and estimated need for financial aid, so schools can determine if the student is low-income.

Prospective students who are accepted into fly-in programs are likely, but not guaranteed, admission into the college if they apply.

"The colleges are flying them there because they think they are great candidates, but don't take that for granted. Don't do something stupid while you're there that would blow your chances," says Jonathan April, general manager at College Greenlight.
