Great Southern railway travelling over a river

7 incredible overnight sleeper train journeys to take in Australia

All aboard! These lush overnight sleeper trains offer a unique way to soak up Australia’s diverse landscape

Melissa Woodley

Whether it’s the Orient Express, Hogwarts Express or even Thomas the Tank Engine, trains are the backdrop of some of our favourite fictional stories – but they make for an even more impressive travel setting IRL.

If exploring Australia is on your bucket list (let’s face it, flights to Europe are exxy right now), you can’t miss the unique experience of an overnight sleeper train. Traversing every state and territory, this form of slow travel is suitable for both the young and young at heart. Plus, trains put less pressure on our environment and can allow you to hop off at your leisure (remember it’s the journey, not the destination).

From winding through the Whitsundays and exploring the rugged red outback to getting from Melbourne to Sydney in style, we’ve rounded up the best train journeys in Australia.

RECOMMENDED: These four Aussie train trips were ranked among the best in the entire world .

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Overnight train journeys to take in Australia

The Ghan

Easily the most iconic and recognisable overnight train on this list, The Ghan is all about luxury. Named after the first Afghan cameleers that arrived in Australia in the 19th century, The Ghan has been hosting unforgettable (and extremely Instagrammable) train journeys for more than 90 years.

The Ghan Expedition, a four-day all-inclusive trip running from Adelaide to Darwin, is the train’s signature line and counts itself among the world’s greatest rail journeys . All up, it costs around $3,705, but there are shorter trips to Alice Springs starting from around $1,500 if you’re restricted on budget.

On board, passengers can unwind with a glass of chilled Aussie wine, while tucking into crocodile sausages and taking in the vast landscapes of Australia’s rugged red outback. If you can pull yourself away from the top-quality service, upgrades including scenic helicopter flights and camel rides can be added to your trip, while other experiences including gorge cruises and cycling tours are included in your fare.

Vintage Rail Journeys

Vintage Rail Journeys

Travel in 1960s style aboard a restored vintage ‘Aurora Australis’ sleeping train on one of four regional NSW tours departing from Sydney’s Central Station. Passengers can watch the spectacular scenery roll by the window in their private air-conditioned compartment, fitted with a personal vanity to freshen up before visiting the Lounge Cars for a chef-prepared meal.

Vintage Rail Journeys’ original and most popular, four-night Golden West Rail Tour travels only twice a year and is a real regional treat, chugging along the Great Dividing Range and through the vineyards of the Hunter Valley and Orange. The hosts also run boutique tours to the Riverina region, known as Australia’s ‘food bowl’, and the beautiful North Coast hinterlands, with two bonus annual tours to Parkes Elvis Festival in January and Repco Bathurst 1,000 in October. Prices for Vintage Rail Journeys four-day tours will set you back $4,495, but you won’t find a holiday quite like this anywhere else in Oz.

Indian Pacific

Indian Pacific

If exploring Australia’s coastline is more your speed, the Indian Pacific will deliver you to the doorstep of cities with the best beaches in town. The greatest drawcard here is that the train journey is all-inclusive, meaning that once you’ve put your suitcases away, you can sink straight into holiday mode.

The famous transcontinental crossing whisks travellers between Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, with fabled journeys from one to four nights. If you’ve got some cash to splash, opt for the platinum experience with stylish and spacious cabins, full-sized ensuites, panoramic window views, access to an exclusive social lounge, private transfers, world-class food and even a nightcap at turndown. Prices start at $1,500 for a two-night route, or from $2,890 for the signature Perth to Sydney four-night trip.

Great Southern

Great Southern

Despite only launching in 2019, this newer addition to Australia’s sleeper train scene has quickly become a must-do – and for good reason. Cruising between Brisbane and Adelaide, the Great Southern train line is filled with breathtaking views of Australia’s southeast (think sun-kissed beaches, rugged coastlines and buzzing cities).

The only challenge you'll face on the journey is picking which off-train experiences to partake in, with all options included in your fare. You could dine under the stars at a local feast in Coffs Harbour, visit cellar doors in Australia’s oldest wine region in the Hunter Valley, and stretch your legs with a leisurely walk to Venus Baths in the Grampians National Park. The all-inclusive rail journey operates throughout the sunny months and will set you back from $2,200 or $3,200, depending on whether you pick the two or three-night route.

Spirit of Queensland

Spirit of Queensland

Whether you’re chasing the sparkling sands of the Sunshine Coast or travelling to the twinkling lights of Brisbane city, the Spirit of Queensland is a convenient and sustainable way to adventure between Queensland’s best destinations. You can jump onboard regular trips from Brisbane to Cairns each week, with stopovers at some of the state’s dreamiest destinations, including the Whitsundays, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast .

Four routes are fitted out with state-of-the-art RailBeds – plush seats that transform into single beds (think business class on a plane). You can kick back in comfort to watch the latest blockbusters through a personalised entertainment device, while you order chef-prepped meals and drinks straight to your seat. Each seat also comes with bed linen and an amenities pack stocked with local, ethical goods. Fares for the RailBeds start from $ 389.25 , but if you’re on a budget, there are economy carriages with roomy seats (sans the beds) available.

Spirit of the Outback

Spirit of the Outback

Think of this train line as the Spirit of Queensland’s richer aunt. Run by the same parent company, the Spirit of the Outback journeys into the heart of Queensland's rugged countryside. Services run between Brisbane and Longreach twice a week, and you can travel the full line or stop for a few days in the many classic Aussie towns along the way.

Dine aboard the all-inclusive Tuckerbox restaurant, decked out with white tablecloths and serving some of Queensland’s best produce, before retiring to your own private cabin – there are single and twin options available – with bed linen, amenities, a washbasin, mirror and wardrobe. Fares start at $ 427 , but if you want to save some cash, the economy carriages have roomy chairs and a dedicated area for meals, snacks and beverages (plus, you’ll get the same stellar views).

NSW TrainLink

NSW TrainLink

It might not be as glamorous, but if you don’t have cash to splash, NSW TrainLink’s sleeper class is a budget-friendly way to get around Australia. Available on long-distance overnight services, the twin sleeper cabins include bed linen, towels and toiletries, so you can arrive at your destination feeling fresh. Plus, you’ll even get complimentary breakfast, media screens and Wi-Fi.

Choose from overnight train trips between Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle, which will set you back a couple hundred dollars – and while it may not be a particularly quick journey, it’s a perfect antidote to the exorbitant prices to fly across the country right now.

Linking the Highlands and the Sea

vintage train trips australia

from Sydney or Wollongong

East Coast Heritage Rail have been operating heritage rail services in the Greater Sydney region since 1985, and we invite you to join us on our flagship tour – the famous Cockatoo Run , a vintage day return train departing Sydney Terminal for Robertson and Moss Vale* through the beautiful Southern Highlands. Enjoy reliving the railway experience of years gone by in our beautifully restored Standard Class heritage carriages, or recline in the luxury of Lounge Class – our licensed buffet car serves light refreshments and souvenirs throughout the journey.

vintage train trips australia

The Journey: A mainstay of our operations since 1995, the Cockatoo Run is a scenic journey along the Illawarra Line, passing first through the rugged natural beauty of the Royal National Park before a spectacular shift to coastal scenery as the line runs parallel to the south coast from Stanwell Tops through to Wollongong and Unanderra. From here you can marvel as the vintage diesel locomotive tackle the steep grades up the Illawarra Escarpment , and enjoy the transition from splendid coastal views to waterfalls and magnificent rainforest as the train climbs up to Summit Tank* , where we pause for you to admire the breathtaking views over Lake Illawarra to the Tasman Sea from the lookout.

We then continue through to historic Robertson , where you can disembark to explore the town’s rustic charms and enjoy a leisurely lunch or continue with the train through to Moss Vale* on selected trips. The train turns around before making the journey back to Central Station, traversing the same spectacular route as the sun sets in the evening, arriving back in Sydney prior to 7pm – an unforgettable day for all!

For detailed lineside notes about the trip which you can refer to during your journey, click here

The Staff: Our friendly crew of volunteer Passenger Attendants will assist with your travel needs when you board and travel on the train, and will show you to your allocated seats. Our crew will point out highlights of the journey and offer information on places of interest that we pass.

How to Book: Seats should be reserved prior to travel – bookings can be made via the links at the top of this page or by calling 1300 65 3801. Last minute, cash-only sales of tickets may be available on the train prior to departure at Sydney Terminal, however these are subject to availability.

Trains currently operate on selected Sundays – Interurban, Tourist, Premier and Lounge Class tickets are available, and compartments are available for booking. Seniors, Group and Family discounts are offered, and carriage hire can be arranged by enquiry.

The long and the short of it; Australia has some remarkable train trips.

There are long haul train journeys such as The Ghan — the longest passenger train in the world — slicing Australia from top to bottom through the Red Centre .

Each state has historic railways with short runs. These are in scenic places and showcase Australia’s unique rail history.

My son is to blame for my train obsession. He loved trains as a child and to feed his interest I would take him on steam trains. Now in his mid 20s I can’t remember the last time he traveled by train but my journeys continue.

I shared some of my favorite trips in 8 Incredible Vintage Train Rides In Australia . Here are 11 more trains worth the ticket to ride.

The Great Southern –Brisbane to Adelaide

1. The Great Southern

Brisbane to adelaide .

In December and January, the wet season sweeps across the Top End. The famous Ghan can’t run due to the chance of flooding on the tracks. Instead, the Great Southern , another service by Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions , borrows the Ghan’s carriages. This summer-only route covers the 1,242 miles between Adelaide and Brisbane .

Like the Ghan, the Great Southern offers sumptuous dining, fine wines, and Platinum and Gold-class carriages . I’ve traveled in a Gold Twin — a lavish experience. The carriages were refurbished at a cost of $2 million each.

Trainspotters with tripods are out in force. Making passengers feel like rockstars.

The multi-day journey is inclusive of side excursions to the Barossa or Hunter wine region ; Canberra, Australia’s capital; the Grampians ; and Coffs Harbour’s sun-kissed beaches.

Pro Tip: Brisbane or Adelaide departures with these packages .

The Overland, Melbourne to Adelaide, attendant stands outside of train on platform.

2. The Overland

Melbourne to adelaide.

The Overland has linked Adelaide and Melbourne since 1887, making it the oldest direct inter-capital rail service in Australia. The name refers to the “overlanders,” or colonists, who pushed forward into Australia’s hinterlands with bullock-drawn drays in search of pastoral land in the 19th century.

The Overland’s symbol is the Emu, a bird which cannot fly but runs with speed and grace across wide-open lands. You could fly from Melbourne to Adelaide in an hour and 20 minutes. A run in the Overland takes all day. But oh, the scenery! Past the silvery lakes of the Wimmera, Victoria’s wheat-growing belt, the craggy Grampians, and the Adelaide Hills famous vineyards.

The Red Standard class offers value-for-money. The Red Premium is an all-inclusive in-seat dining and trolley service offering breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. All passengers can access the licensed buffet bar.

Pro Tip: The Overland operates two services a week in each direction and links with The Ghan and the Indian Pacific.

Spirit of Queensland with Glasshouse Mountains in the background.

3. Spirit Of Queensland

Brisbane to cairns .

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a train! The Spirit of Queensland is as streamlined as any aircraft with reclining seats, overhead lockers, and in-seat entertainment .

The 1,045-mile journey from Brisbane to Cairns takes 24 hours but you can break the journey at Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay (with access to Fraser Island ), and Townsville. Cairns, the final destination, is the base for the Great Barrier Reef, and the Daintree .

Spirit of Queensland seats convert into beds like business class travel on a plane.

The service offers Premium Economy or RailBed Class similar to business class on airlines. Attendants recline the seats into flatbeds. They serve meals with a paddock-to-plate focus rather than airline food!

The Spirit of Queensland runs from Brisbane to Cairns five times a week.

Mary Valley Rattler, Gympie, Queensland.

4. Mary Valley Rattler

Gympie, queensland .

Get on board! Hear the toot and the clickety-clack as you round the track. The Mary Valley Rattler is a beloved old-fashioned steam train. This tourist railway is in Gympie, a town 2 hours north of Brisbane, or behind the Sunshine Coast , should you be staying there. The scenic journey is through the Mary Valley, an area punctuated by misty hills, valleys, foodie haunts, and opportunities to kayak with platypuses. Enjoy the Historic Gympie Station, a traditional Queensland building restored to its glory days. Historical displays share stories of the Mary Valley Railway line. The Rattler’s 29-mile scenic return trip crosses the Mary River and chugs around curves and across bridges. At Amamoor , see the engine turned on the turntable. Experience the Rattler Tasting Train where you board the vintage railmotor RM76 and enjoy local cheese, sourdough, and other delights. On Sunday, their All Stations Train means wine and cheese tastings for a $5 donation to a community group. Tourists also love the Rusty Rails Café in the restored railway station dining area. The Mary Valley Rattler was a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award Winner .

5. The Q Train

Victoria .

If you love heritage trains and fine dining, this is the train to catch. Australia’s premier and award-winning rail restaurant, the Q Train , departs from the historic Drysdale Train Station, near Geelong . The journey offers stunning views of Swan Bay and the Bellarine particularly at sunset. The journey showcases the local food, wine, beer, and cider from the Bellarine Peninsula. Not simply a meal, this is a six-course dégustation journey created by chefs. Expect platings like Sage Farm-salted beef with pear, pepper, wasabi aioli, sesame oil, dehydrated tomato, and Thai basil. The Q Train uses renovated and restored carriages from Queensland’s retired Sunlander and one of its steam engines is from the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway .

Pro Tip: Drysdale Station is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, or arrive via Port Phillip Ferries departing Melbourne’s Docklands.

The Byron Bay Solar Train.

6. Byron Bay Train

New south wales.

This is one hip trip. Byron Bay runs the world’s only full-sized, fully solar-powered train . The immaculately restored 1949-era, two-carriage heritage train was converted to solar power. The 1.86-mile coastal track links the Byron Town Center with the North Beach precinct and Byron Arts Estate. The 10 minutes one-way, or 25-minute return journey, passes through rainforest, endangered coastal wetlands, and over Belongil Creek, part of Cape Byron Marine Park. The train holds a capacity of 92 seated passengers, and their surfboards!

Scenic Railway, Blue Mountains, NSW.

7. Scenic Railway

This may be the shortest but most thrilling ride of your life. Boasting the Guinness World Record for the world’s steepest railway, the funicular in the Blue Mountains behind Sydney was built for mining in the 19th century before being converted to a tourist ride in 1945. Following an award-winning redevelopment in 2013, the fifth-generation train travels an unforgettable route through a cliff tunnel before emerging on the floor of the Jamison Valley. Passengers choose their level of adventure, by adjusting their seated position. Choose the 64-degree incline if you want the Cliffhanger!

Victorian Goldfields Railway, Victoria

8. Victorian Goldfields Railway

The Goldfields Railway is a historical train service running between Castlemaine (around 2 hours’ drive from Melbourne) and the historic village of Maldon . I rode this wonderful railway recently on one of Victoria’s 100 degree Fahrenheit days. I appreciated the air conditioned carriages in first class and the bar. There’s something about watching the world slip by while sipping bubbles. Despite the heat, I couldn’t resist heading out to the external observation deck — like something out of an old western movie. Although, the scenes were Austalian and included locations from The Dressmaker starring Kate Winslett and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries .

The love and restoration that has gone into this heritage railway is extraordinary. Popular events include their Murder on the Orient Express nights where the journey includes a screening of the famous movie. The art deco and Edwardian parlor carriages are perfect for the occasion. Ales on Rails showcases the local brews and driver experience packages. You might finally get to drive a train.

Pro Tip: Like in many of Australia’s tinderbox areas, diesel rather than steam engines are used in summer.

Hotham Valley Tourist Railway, Western Australia.

9. Hotham Valley Tourist Railway

Western australia.

Dwellingup, in the Darling Range near Perth, was named 2021 Top Small Tourism Town in western Australia. The town’s historic Hotham Valley Railway is part of the attraction. Once serving the timber industry and agricultural areas, the steam trains now run weekly (May to October). On the return journey, there’s the thrill of a Steam Locomotive hard at work climbing western Australia’s steepest and most spectacular section of railway. The suspense of wondering whether it will make it is all part of the thrill. A vintage diner train runs on Saturdays, the forest softly lit for the occasion. Advanced bookings are recommended.

Alexandra Timber Tramway.

10. Alexandra Timber Tramway

A tourist railway is in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Alexandra 81 miles northeast of Melbourne. Experience the era of bush sawmills and tramways in the Rubicon Forest as they were during the early 1900s. View an extensive rolling stock including the first Victorian-built diesel locomotives. Experience a quaint tramway ride and learn more about narrow gauge and timber tramways at the museum. Pioneers lived with their families deep in the bush, their only connection to the outside world through these tramways. A number of them tragically lost their lives in the 1939 bushfires leading to a ban of rebuilding the mills in the forest — the end of an era and a unique slice of Australian history.

Pro Tip: Trains run on select weekends each month and for special events.

Yarra Valley Railway A view from inside Walker rail motor 22RM–

11. Yarra Valley Tourist Railway

One of our favorite rides when my son was little was the Yarra Valley Tourist Railway; a chance to experience a 1950s Walker RM22 Railmotor and an exciting ride through an 1889 brick-built tunnel (stretching 500 feet through the tunnel hill). During the 30-minute ride, spot kangaroos in the paddocks, and chug past vineyards. Like many of Australia’s restored railways, the rides exist because of the tireless work of dedicated volunteers. Over 500 have helped keep this railway running.

Pro Tip: The Yarra Valley is a famous wine region outside of Melbourne. Take the opportunity to visit Healesville Sanctuary to meet Australian wildlife. TarraWarra Museum of Art is a striking modern art gallery.

Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Go back in time to the Golden Age of Rails with a vintage train trip, a new trend in travel that combines modern luxury with authentic history. Several travel companies are keeping the rail travel tradition alive with the refurbishment of historic train cars, allowing travelers the opportunity to see new places in new ways.

Complete with swank lounges and first-class sleepers, these vintage trains offer one of the best ways to get from one place to another, allowing travelers to enjoy the scenery of the changing landscapes through their train car window along the way.

Many of these vintage trains include lavish service, elaborate meals, onboard guides and day tours at stops along the way and sometimes come with a hefty price tag, but more affordable options are also available and well worth it for the chance to immerse yourself in history and see the world from a new perspective.

Here are some of the top vintage train excursions available around the world:

  • The Simplon-Orient-Express excursion runs from Paris to Istanbul via Budapest and Bucharest with shorter two- to four-day trips available on routes connecting London, Venice, Prague and Vienna.
  • The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, the world’s longest continuous railway line, operates a 15-day itinerary over the Urals, across the expansive steppe and along the shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake, linking Moscow and Vladivostok.
  • The Rocky Mountaineer runs excursion trains on several Canadian routes, the most notable being Calgary to Vancouver, where guests can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, Banff and Lake Louis. This train travels only during the day and stops for overnight stays in Kamloops.
  • The Royal Scotsman offers two- to seven-day excursions through the rolling green hills of Scotland, allowing guests to discovers the country’s rich history in the form of ancient ruins and castles and its stunning natural beauty.
  • Australia’s Great Southern Rail offers a three-night trip offering breathtaking sights of the Australian countryside with varied scenery from snow-covered mountains to vast fields of green and gold.
  • The contemporary California Zephyr is based on a historic train that ran from Chicago to Emeryville. The new train offers one of the most beautiful train trips in North America, covering much of the same route of the original California Zephyr on the Burlington, Rio Grande and Western Pacific railroads. The train winds through the Rockies to Salt Lake City and through Reno and Sacramento.

The Southern Rail Spectacular is a five-day heritage steam and diesel rail tour organised by Cruise Express.

The company runs regular heritage rail and sail tours around Australia and overseas, but this is its first rail journey to include steam - and not just one but four steam locomotives.

The tour boasts the largest steam locomotive to operate in Australia - the 265-tonne Beyer-Garratt 6029, built in 1954.

Six train preservation societies will share their steam and diesel engines and original carriages to create the heritage rail journey.

Departing Sydney on August 30, passengers will travel by diesel locomotive to Goulburn where they will board the 6029 steam locomotive bound for Junee. From there, diesel engines will convey passengers to Albury for overnight accommodation.

The next morning, it's all aboard former express train, The Spirit of Progress, which will travel on standard gauge for the first time. The newly-restored locomotive P22 will haul to Seymour for a visit to the Railway Heritage Centre. Then it's on to Melbourne for a two-night stay.

More steam locomotives join the adventure on September 1 when the restored 103-year-old A2986 will take passengers for a scenic ride through central Victoria to Castlemaine, where they will transfer to the Victorian Goldfields Railway for the journey to the historic gold rush town of Maldon and back.

On September 2, the R707 steams from Melbourne to Newport - home to Steamrail Victoria, 707 Operations and the Diesel Electric Rail Motor Association of Victoria - then back to Melbourne to change trains to standard gauge and the Spirit of Progress run to Albury for an overnight stay.

The final day begins with a diesel-hauled trip to Junee where 6029 will meet travellers once again to take them to Goulburn. Then it's over to the diesels for the final run to Sydney.

Including four nights' accommodation, breakfasts and daily excursions, the five-day Southern Rail Spectacular is available from $2190 per person twin share, and from $2790 for solo travellers.

Preserving cane train history before Australian rail buffs run out of puff

By Robert Burgin

ABC Sunshine Coast

Topic: History

Railway enthusiast Brad Peadon is convinced time is running out to preserve remnants from the glory years of Australia's cane trains.

Peadon, a railway historian with about 300,000 photos, many of them irreplaceable, is one of several ferroequinologists — a technical term for train buffs — struggling with failing health or fading memories.

Meanwhile natural disasters, weather exposure and shifting priorities continue to threaten bridges, tracks and locomotives that paved the way for sugar to flourish around the nation.

"There is, no doubt, some great work undertaken by a few museums," Mr Peadon says.

"But for the most part you really wouldn't have a clue of the extent cane train routes existed."

As sugar mills face uncertain futures and governments monitor maintenance budgets, it is often retirees and volunteers left fighting for the cause, salvaging what they can.

While there's a lot to preserve — about 4,000 kilometres of track, 250 locomotives and 52,000 cane bins still transport sugarcane around Australia — some valued mementos are already lost.

An enduring passion

Mr Peadon, 55, became fascinated with trains and trams when he was five.

"I used to ride the old railmotor from Robertson in the New South Wales Southern Highlands down to Wollongong with my grandparents on holidays, and that likely had a lot to do with it," he says.

Train enthusiast Brad Peadon stands in front of a light blue train in the Philippines.

Brad Peadon also founded the Philippine Railway Historical Society. ( Supplied: Brad Peadon )

"My obsession with cane trains in particular traces back to the 1990s when I visited Queensland and saw a map of Nambour with a cane line running down the street.

"I found the line, the trains, then the old mill, which sparked an annual visit, where I would explore more and more."

Among the friends Mr Peadon made was Clive Plater, now president of the Nambour and District Historical Museum.

Clive Plater stands in front of pulley wheels, the few remnants saved from the Maroochy River Tramway Lift Bridge.

Mr Plater's great-grandfather was the first chairman of Nambour's Moreton Mill, and father Edgar Plater served for 51 years as an engine driver, tramway and bridge supervisor, cane inspector and traffic operator.

Protecting the past

Mr Plater, who has written books about cane railways and received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to community history, says sugar is what saw Nambour boom.

"The sugar mill was a great employer and a great thing for the town," Mr Plater says.

"There were tractor dealers and car dealerships everywhere, and that's what made the economy boom here for over 100 years.

"But there certainly isn't much left and you can't exactly blame the sugar companies or mill owners because they're often obliged to pull up everything when a mill closes."

Mr Plater and Mr Peadon agree one of the greatest difficulties in preserving cane railways is they are often on private land, running through farms.

They both rue the "tragic" failure to protect the old wooden Tramway Lift Bridge that spanned the Sunshine Coast's Maroochy River.

Although a small section was removed in 2019 to be preserved at Nambour Museum, the rest was washed away by floods in 2022.

A bridge goes over a river lined with trees and fields.

"As time went on, I knew they wouldn't save the bridge because there was no maintenance done to it," Mr Plater says.

"It was a picturesque spot, a nice spot to stand at, sail past, take photos or do a spot of fishing."

In North Queensland, several other bridges used for sugar cane trains — which are smaller and have narrower wheelbases than regular trains — have been damaged or decommissioned in past decades.

When you add the loss of other tracks servicing bygone mining, logging and docking routes, for some railway enthusiasts it feels like history is being erased.

As recently as 2023, the head of the Light Railways Research Society of Australia warned the organisation may not exist past 2030.

Rise of the cane train

Trains became the dominant means of transporting sugar cane in Australia in 1882, although the defunct Morayfield Plantation (closed 1889), north of Brisbane, pioneered a traction locomotive in 1866.

Historian John Browning says prior to trains, sugar cane was first transported by wagons, bullocks and horses, then largely via waterways on a combination of vessels.

The locations along Australia's eastern coast where sugar cane plantations flourished — places like Mackay, the Burdekin, the Tweed and northern New South Wales — commonly feature navigable riverways.

However, railways direct to mills were preferred by the end of the 19th century, reducing double-handling, losses of cane, and avoiding complex, shifting maritime conditions.

"The solution emerged with the development of light rail technology by the French sugar beet farmer and engineer Paul Decauville," Mr Browning says.

Decauville worked with English firm John Fowler & Co to modify steam-powered ploughs used in agriculture, developing them into a patent for the Iron Carrier.

The Iron Carrier was the first iteration of what we now know as a cane train locomotive and was exported to places including Australia and Fiji.

Changes, both good and bad

Mr Browning, for one, doesn't subscribe to a pessimistic outlook for cane trains.

"The truth is that they are flourishing and constantly adapting to enhance efficiency and effectiveness," he says.

"Cane railways in Queensland are the envy of the sugar industry worldwide.

"They are by far the most economical and environmentally friendly method of cane transport.

"The investment by the sugar industry in cane railway networks has been significant."

Despite this, more than 15 mills across Queensland alone have closed since the 1880s, including a raft since the dawn of the 21st century.

Nambour's Moreton Mill (2003), Bundaberg's Fairymead (2004), and North Queensland's Mourilyan (2006), Pleystowe (2009) and Babinda (2011) mills have all shut down.

There has been constant speculation about the future of the Mossman Sugar Mill , which was placed into voluntary administration in 2023, but at the same time record prices have been recorded for sugar .

Who preserves what's left?

Greg Shannon is a volunteer and board member at the Australian Sugar Heritage Centre at Mourilyan, just south of Innisfail.

Founded in 1974, the centre houses two vintage locomotives among other artefacts, but has been closed since the end of 2023 due to weather damage.

An external image of the Australian Sugar Heritage Centre

The heritage centre has suffered extensive damage to its roof. ( Supplied: Australian Sugar Heritage Centre )

"We can't get the power back on because the roof has leaked so bad. We don't know if we're going to reopen," he says.

"We're going to need about $400,000 and just don't have the money.

"We've tried heaps of different forms of government funding, but it's fallen flat, so now we're chasing a couple of local businesses to see if they'll get involved and help out."

Like enthusiasts further south, Mr Shannon admits age and fatigue are starting to take their toll.

"There's only been eight of us involved and the truth is we're all getting tired," he says.

One ray of light for narrow-gauge rail enthusiasts in 2024 has been the reopening of the Plantation Train circuit at Woombye's Big Pineapple.

Ridden in 1983 by King Charles and the late Princess Diana, the modified cane train is popular with visitors of all ages.

As well as lovingly refurbishing the locomotive, Big Pineapple workers also replaced 700 sleepers and 250 metres of track previously damaged by vandals .

Time of the essence

When Brad Peadon suffered three strokes in August, his urging to preserve history gained additional perspective.

"I know the cost of maintaining infrastructure is immense, but we could have more interpretive signage around, denoting what was once there.

"One idea I liked was talk of illuminated representation of cane lines at particular points of interest," he says.

"I've always felt the best history is from those who worked it, and I'd like to see more books and websites on the topic.

"Sadly, personal stories are often untold and, with each passing year, more and more are lost."

Room options

Riverina Room.jpg

Your Riverina adventure starts at Sydney’s Central Station. Once onboard the Aurora Australis, and either choose to relax in the lounge carriage, or settle into your cabin while we travel south from Sydney. Lunch will be served onboard the train today as we travel to Goulburn, where you will have the choice from two off-train experiences.

Option 1: Retford Park National Trust Built in 1887 by the Hordern family and lavishly redesigned by James Fairfax in the 1960s, Retford Park is a place of great heritage significance located in the heart of Bowral, Gundungurra Country.Be amazed by the ‘Portuguese Pink’ mansion while wandering the pristine gardens dotted with sculptures and artworks. With 60,000 artefacts, textiles, and furniture within its collection, here enjoy a guided house tour, and a stroll around the stunning gardens.

Option 2: Fairground Follies The Fairground Follies at the Antique Mechanical Music Museum features a most exciting and unique collection of fairground and mechanical music. “Where good times of the past, make great times for today”. An interactive experience featuring cultural music, folk art, a 100-year-old carousel and much more. This is an enchanting attraction, a magical place filled with music, entertainment and history of antique mechanical music. Enjoy a guided tour and afternoon-tea.

Following your first day of touring, rejoin your train in Moss Vale and enjoy dinner onboard as we travel to Goulburn and stable for the evening.

Enjoy breakfast onboard as we leave Goulburn and continue along the Main South Line. We pass many interesting villages and towns today as we travel through the Canola Trail, so keep an eye out for the many grain silos adjacent to the rail line. Our train then arrives into Junee, and there is an opportunity to watch the Loco Runaround movement.

Our first stop for the day is the Historical Railway Museum featuring a 100-foot turntable, showcasing steam and diesel locomotives. The Junee Roundhouse is one of just a few surviving, working, railway Roundhouses in the Southern Hemisphere. It is uniquely Australian as its size, being fully circular and having a long, ‘100 foot’, turntable. While the Museum is part of the Roundhouse, the other part, including the turntable, is still used as a diesel locomotive servicing facility by Junee Railway Workshop.

Have you ever wanted to see what happens at a licorice factory? Your next stop is the Junee Licorice & Chocolate factory. As soon as you step foot in the front door you’ll be immersed in the delicious aroma of licorice and chocolate, one of chocolatiers will talk you through the process of licorice and chocolate production and you’ll witness it being made before your eyes.

We then have a short drive to Coolamon where our lunch spot awaits. Enjoy a tour with an artisan cheese maker located in the heart of the Riverina, known for creating an innovative range of handcrafted cheese, followed by lunch.

There is free time to wander about Coolamon town before we rejoin the train and head onto Murrami. After dinner onboard, enjoy a special stargazing experience in Murrami.

Today you will enjoy breakfast onboard before departing on one of the below off-train experiences. Option 1: Meet The Producers – Morella Grove Farm, Southern Cotton Gin and Whitton Malt House Nestled in the lush Riverina region of New South Wales, Morella Grove is where the essence of nature meets Frank and his family’s passion for excellence. This award winning producer of olive oil, following a paddock to plate philosophy is your first stop of the day. Morella Grove is a beacon of sustainability, in the Riverina’s arid beauty, they practise minimal intervention, respecting and nurturing the natural environment. Next is it a visit to Southern Cotton, an independently owned ginning facility located in Whitton. Consistently ranked as one of the best gins in Australia, the privately owned Southern Cotton provides fast, timely ginning for local growers. Your tour concludes with lunch at Whitton Malt House. Optional Upgrade: Whisky Tasting at Whitton Malt House (limited capacity) Try a curated selection of fine whisky’s. Option 2: Farm & Vines – Murray Cod Farm And Calabria Wines Specialising in producing premium pond grown Murray Cod, join a guided tour of Murray Cod Farm, which is committed to sustainability and operates with a focus on improving the natural environment. From here, journey onto Calabria Family Wines, where you’re invited to savour the essence of the families’ wines and the warmth of their traditions. Renowned for Italian hospitality, at Calabria Family Wines you will experience a fusion of flavours and aromas through the café bar menu, new museum and sensory wall, plus explore exquisite wines and discover new favourites. Enjoy a wine-tasting and Italian shared platter style lunch. Following your tour, rejoin the train in Yenda and travel onto Temora where we stable overnight, enjoying another delicious dinner onboard

Breakfast this morning is onboard before experiencing Temora. Today you can choose one of two Temora tours:

Option 1: Bundawarrah Centre Visit the Bundawarrah Centre which houses the Temora Rural Museum. Spend the morning experiencing the history of the region including a cottage of hardwood slabs that was Sir Donald Bradman’s first home, a one room public school, bush church, country dance hall, printery, flour mill and ambulance station. Next is the Ambulance Museum which includes ambulance vehicles and conveyances dating back to 1897.

Option 2: Temora Aviation Museum Alternatively spend the morning exploring the Temora Aviation Museum which was built on the site of the biggest and longest lasting RAAF Elementary Flying Training School during World War II. There are three main exhibit buildings to discover, the Museum which is in the original 10 EFTS Guardhouse; the second exhibition area, located in the Engineering Hangar overlooking the aircraft which are currently in maintenance; and the Display Hangar which houses the new exhibitions area along with the aircraft. Coaches will return you to Temora Station where lunch will be served in the dining carriage as we travel on freight only lines via Stockinbingal. There are many freight trains to pass on this single track line, and we are likely to experience delays. Dinner will be served onboard the train as we travel through Parkes and onto the Broken Hill line to Orange Rail Yard.

Enjoy breakfast as we travel from Orange and towards the Great Dividing Range. On through Lithgow and through the 10 tunnels that replaced the Lithgow Zig-Zag, then cross the Darling Causeway on the way to Mount Victoria. Stopping at Mount Victoria, we disembark for a fun adventure on Lithgow’s Zig Zag Railway. Soak up the sights, smells and scenery on Australia’s historic rail adventure – the Zig Zag Railway. Established in 1869, you’ll enjoy a relaxing ride on the romantic, nostalgic, impressive steam locomotive as it hauls you over the Great Lithgow Zig Zag. With a grazing boxed lunch provided, you’ll then have free time in Leura and Katoomba before reboarding the train for the last leg of your Vintage Rail Journey as we arrive back into Sydney Central Station
