Pet Transport (Export)

Transfur only relocates pets by air from The UK to a variety of destinations worldwide.

We are not able to assist those owners who wish to transport their pets in the aircraft cabin or as excess baggage. Those wishing to do so must contact their airlines of choice directly.

Transport Preparation

Plan your pet's travel arrangements well in advance of the proposed date of travel particularly if making the move to Australia and New Zealand.

Import requirements do vary from country to country so please get in contact with us for the latest information and advice.

Air Travel Container

Pet travel containers must comply with current IATA and individual airline requirements. Generally containers are constructed from wood, are built made to measure and are non collapseable. Rigid plastic containers which are collapseable may not be suitable for very large or aggressive breeds of dog

Pet Documents

Documents for the export of pets from the UK vary according to country of destination. Generally pets will need to be microchipped and accompanied by a type of health certificate along with up to date vaccination records and blood test reports where applicable

We are sure you will have plenty of questions for us, and we will happily answer them. In the meantime, some of our most frequently asked questions are below. For more information, please don't hesitate to call, WhatsApp, or use the online quote form.

Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means they travel in a special animal friendly compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated throughout the flight.  It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable while flying?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the flight.  Following these guidelines ensure they will have enough space in their crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We provide standard or custom-made air kennels which include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How much does it cost?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which helps minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique. For a full quote it is best to fill in our online form and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

I already have a travel crate, can I use it?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet. What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate. This defines the entry criteria that must be met which could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going to

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes. We will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising transfer times on the ground and if a transit stop is required on the journey.

Can my pet travel on the same flight as me?

 If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports. 

If I'm on the same flight as my pet, can I visit it during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

 Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I suddenly have to postpone my flight?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits.

In most cases, this means that your dog or cat can travel with you in the cabin, even some larger dogs. Why fly to France rather than direct to the UK?

Due to the UK’s regulations, flying direct to London with a pet is a complicated process. For a start, your pet would have to be shipped in a crate and placed in the hold as Cargo, whatever their size. In many cases, they would have to wait for several hours after landing before you would be allowed to collect them. So, you’d be apart for much longer than you should be.

Your pet could easily end up being stuck in a cage for many hours, with no breaks.

When you fly to France rather than direct to London, smaller pets can travel with you in the cabin reassuringly right by your side. Larger dogs may need to go in the hold, however they will still board your flight at the same time as you, and exit the airport with you. As a result, your pet will spend less time apart from you, which is much less stressful for them.

As an added bonus, our Pet Move service is often more cost-effective than flying direct to the UK. And you get to see some of the beautiful French countryside from the comfort of our chauffeur driven car.

Hassle-free travelling

We know all too well how stressful relocating can be. The last thing you need is the added worry of whether your pet will be properly looked after by an airline company, or whether you have all the paperwork you need. Don’t worry, there’s another way! We can help you transport your pets to Canada from Paris, as pets can fly out of France with their owners as checked baggage. So, a cat or small dog can go in a travel box that fits under your seat; while multiple or larger pets can go in travel boxes in the cargo hold. In line with IATA rules, there’s a designated area for pets at the front of the aircraft’s hold that shares air with the cabin.

To travel in this way, your pet would need an animal health certificate (AHC) to travel from the UK to France, in addition to the export health certificate (EHC) for travel to Canada. (We can help you obtain both of these.) One of our couriers would drive your pet(s) to Paris and meet you at Charles de Gaulle airport for your flight to Canada. COLLECTION OF YOUR PET

We can collect you and/or your pet from any point in the UK. Whether that's your home, a train station, ferry port, airport or any other point, we can accomodate your needs. uk pet transport

OUR VEHICLES

We have a variety of vehicles available depending on your needs and whether you are travelling with your pet/s.  In all instances we strive to ensure that your pet is comfortable at all times.  The vehicles are all fully airconditioned, extreamly well maintained and meet DEFRA standards.  If your pet is travelling on their own they will be transported in one of our purpose built crates.  All animals have access to water and comfortable bedding throughout the journey.

Delivering your pet to their destination

In advance of the journey we will have agreed a location for delivery of you/your pet.  If your pet is travelling on their own, I will contact you 30 minutes before my arrival at the destination.

Q. My dog is a very nervous traveller.  Do you work with anxious dogs?

A.  Yes, certainly.  We have lots of experience of working with animals that are anxious.  We often find that dogs who are nervous when they are with their owner are generally a lot calmer when they are with someone else if that person is experienced with handling animals.

Q. Where do you collect the pet from? 

A. We will agree a collection point during the booking process.  We can collect you and/or your pet from any location across the UK.

Q. How many animals do you transport on each journey?

A.   It varies.  We can transport up to 5 animals in our bigger vehicles if the animals are travelling without their owners.  If you wish to travel with your animals we can help with this too.  Numbers depend on the amount of animals/humans and luggage.

Q. What if the journey takes several days?

A.  If your pet is travelling on their own, at no point will they be unsupervised.  Where an overnight stay is required, our driver will be booked into an animal friendly hotel.  If you are travelling with your pet, we can organise a hotel for you but it will be at an additional cost.

PetAir UK is registered with IATA, IPATA and DEFRA approved. All of the vets at PetAir UK are official veterinarians, and the vets have undergone extra training and can complete the DEFRA export certificates and pre-travel health checks for your pets.

The Journey

Moving any pet from their home to a new place can be stressful for owners and the animal. All of our flight routings are based around what is best for that particular pets travel.

PetAir UK will use the best airlines and the quickest routes when travelling with a pet, avoiding the cheaper routes where there may be a stop on the way. Where possible, the journey is made shorter to reduce stress for the pet during their travels.

There are a number of requirements needed for your pet to travel including a pet passport, microchip and other vet checks depending on their destination. You can find more details on pet passport requirements  here .

Where in the plane does my pet travel?

Your pet will usually travel in the hold of the aircraft, in a special area which is heated and pressurised. There are some exceptions where pets are allowed in the cabin, however each airline varies.

Pet Travel Scheme

If you're entering the UK, your dog must meet the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme offered by the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). It allows cats and dogs to travel between some countries and UK airports avoiding quarantine.

If you're travelling to a different country, please check with the relevant embassy or consulate for any regulations or restrictions.

SUN-AIR flights

SUN-AIR is our franchise partner operating flights within Europe under the British Airways brand. As on British Airways operated flights, recognised assistance dogs are allowed in the cabin, as well as other pets up to 6kg.

• Other pets must be transported in a waterproof bag or cage, with maximum dimensions of 20 x 30 x 20cm (7.5 x 11.5 x 7.5in).
• It is the owners’ responsibility to ensure that all documentation and animal passports are in order before departure.
• SUN-AIR permits one pet on board each aircraft at one time.

Please contact the SUN-AIR ticket office on +45 75 33 16 11 no later than 72 hours before departure if you wish to bring your pet on a SUN-AIR operated flight. Please note that pets are not permitted on SUN-AIR flights to the United Kingdom.
