Two-factor authentication from banks can be a tricky barrier to overcome while abroad, but there are ways to ensure you have access when you need it most.

Imagine this: you’re lounging in an exotic location overseas, sipping on your preferred chilled beverage of choice, and you decide to get caught up on a little personal banking.
When you go to login to your account so you can pay off one of your many Miles & Points-generating premium credit cards, your heart sinks when you receive an automated message that says something like “Login not recognized – we’re sending a code to your phone”.
In situations such as this, you’ve just run across two-factor authentication (2FA), which can be a difficult hurdle to overcome. Let’s go through the methods best suited to deal with two-factor authentication when travelling.
What Is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication is a security feature which has taken digital technology platforms by storm in recent years.
Essentially, it’s a system which is designed to ensure that the only person who can access your personal information is, in fact, you. It accomplishes this by placing an extra barrier to accessing this information by way of a second factor to authenticate your identity.
The first factor is typically something that you input, which could be a password, fingerprint, or even facial recognition. With data breaches occurring regularly, using a single factor to access accounts is becoming less and less possible, especially with sensitive data.
The second factor almost always comes in the form of a code which you need to enter into the platform you’re trying to access before being able to complete your login or conduct transactions.
The code is usually delivered to a secondary device or service provider that only you have access to, typically via one of five methods: a phone call, a text message, an email, a push notification through your financial institution’s mobile app, or an authenticator app.
This system of authentication will usually trigger when you try to access your account from an unrecognized location, such as a new device, IP address, or web browser. When travelling, we find ourselves in new places quite often, so encountering 2FA isn’t at all unusual.
Basically, 2FA introduces a trade-off of a minor inconvenience for increased security. How minor that inconvenience is depends on your tech-savviness, your willingness to jump through hoops that aren’t always the most user-friendly, or as is often the case for us intrepid globetrotters, how reliably you can receive an access code on your second device or service provider.
How to Use Two-Factor Authentication Abroad
2FA is a reality across many modern digital technology platforms, and Canadian banking institutions are no exception. Let’s talk about a few ways that you can deal with it in the most effective way possible, both at home and abroad.
Push Notifications
The first method is to use your trusted smartphone device. Many financial institutions conduct 2FA by sending a push notification to the bank’s mobile app, and these apps register the identity of your individual device.
This means that even if you login to one of your bank accounts from a foreign IP address, or while using a SIM card not attached to your main phone number, you’ll be fine as long as you’re using your trusted device. This is also why it’s important not to reset your phone or clear saved data whenever possible before leaving home, especially with the login for your bank’s mobile app.
Canadian Phone Number
The second method to overcoming 2FA while travelling is to always have your Canadian SIM card on hand so you can be ready to receive calls or SMS texts to your Canadian phone number.
When travelling, you’re likely to want to avoid Canada’s ridiculously high roaming fees in favour of far more economic local phone providers or e-SIMs . However, these numbers will not be attached to any of your banking information, and cannot be used for 2FA purposes.
After all, I’m sure we’d all feel a bit less safe if verification codes could be sent to random numbers tracing from Timbuktu!
Therefore, it’s wise to be able to slot in your Canadian SIM if you encounter an emergency. Pay your daily roaming charge to conduct your transactions, and then take it out and continue saving for the rest of your trip.
This method can be quite costly if you’re not careful, but if you’re in a bind, it’s likely worth the price of admission. Many Canadian phone providers deliver inbound SMS text messages for free around the world, so just watch that you don’t take or make calls, send outbound messages, or tap into your roaming data.
Of course, this is made much easier if you have a phone with dual-SIM capability, allowing you to seamlessly switch between reasonable roaming rates and your convenient Canadian cellular carrier.
Virtual Phone Number
The third method for overcoming 2FA, and one which is imperfect, is to pay for a virtual phone number, such as a premium subscription on the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service Fongo .
This isn’t a guaranteed way to receive calls or texts for two-factor authentication purposes, but there have been plenty of reports from people using this app to receive both calls and text messages when sent a 2FA message from their bank while abroad.
At $9.99 (CAD) a month, this is an affordable alternative which can work on occasion; however, as Fongo itself notes , not every single carrier will accept their service, and you may not receive all messages from short-code and regular numbers. The price is much likely less than a full roaming package, though, so it could be worthwhile to try it out on your next trip to see if it works for you.
Contact the Bank
Finally, and as a method of last resort, be ready to call your bank from abroad should you absolutely have to. Many financial institutions have voice ID verification, so even if you’re calling from a foreign number or online service such as Google Voice, you’ll still be able to verify your identity and make some transactions.
Even if your bank does not have voice verification, you still may be able to arrange proof of identification that sidesteps 2FA by providing information specific to you and your account.
While this option isn’t convenient, it can be effective should all other avenues of authenticating yourself to access your account fail.
Two-Factor Authentication Methods for Canadian Financial Institutions
The Prince of Travel team has had plenty of experience with the 2FA procedures of most major financial institutions in the country. From our experiences, we’ve compiled the following methods that each bank uses.
If you keep this list in mind while using the strategies we’ve outlined above, you’ll be able to remedy your authentication woes far faster and with less of a headache.
Remember, your experience with 2FA might vary, but this list should give you a good idea of what to look out for.
- American Express Canada: Amex does not require 2FA and provides the fastest and best phone service in Canada for accounts that come under review for any reason.
- BMO : BMO does not require 2FA at present, but may automatically flag accounts. In this case, immediately call the BMO security centre at 1-877-225-5266.
- Canadian Tire Financial Services: Canadian Tire will send an email to your registered email address whenever they have doubts regarding your identity. Their call centre is also excellent, and rivals American Express when it comes to customer service.
- CIBC : CIBC provides 2FA via SMS, phone call, or push notifications in the CIBC app. It can also send 2FA codes via email, but not to free personal email providers such as Gmail.
- EQ: EQ Bank provides both SMS and email messages.
- HSBC: The primary method of 2FA for HSBC is via the mobile app; however, its functionality can leave something to be desired. Don’t be surprised if you’re required to contact their call centre, which can be frustrating when in another country as you may be required to verify via SMS text message while on the phone.
- Manulife: Manulife offers both email and SMS 2FA methods.
- MBNA: MBNA is 100% phone-based, either via call or SMS.
- National Bank: Email or SMS are the preferred methods of communication for the mainly Quebec-based National Bank.
- PC Financial: For both their credit cards and prepaid Money Account , PC Financial uses SMS or email notifications.
- RBC : All RBC 2FA is conducted via its mobile banking app. However, it’s not strictly necessary, and you can access your account from an unrecognized location through dated security measures like answering a security question.
- Rogers Bank: Strangely, even though Rogers Bank’s parent company is a telecom giant, it only does 2FA via email.
- Scotiabank : Scotiabank only uses app-based 2FA.
- Simplii: As the telephone/online-only subsidiary of CIBC, Simplii is entirely app-based for verification.
- Tangerine: The online-only arm of Scotiabank provides 2FA via email, though occasionally you will be contacted by their fraud department.
- TD : TD requires its 2FA to go through either call, SMS, or their proprietary separate authenticator mobile app .
- Wise: The Wise Prepaid Visa, which is excellent for foreign currency conversions , uses in-app push notifications.
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication Before You Travel
2FA secures your accounts by sending a verification code to another trusted platform. Before you travel, it’s critical to ensure that you’ll be able to receive these messages successfully.
If you try to set up 2FA from an unknown location, you’ll be prompted for 2FA to set it up. Rather than getting caught in this endless loop, you’ll need to take this first step at home.
Make sure that your online banking profile is up to date before you travel, listing any phone numbers or email addresses where you’d like to receive verification messages.
Also, if the bank uses in-app authentication, be sure to opt into this feature and download any required mobile apps.
It’s interesting to note that many banks seem to corral customers toward their mobile app instead of just using SMS, which has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, it’s easier to use a mobile app when travelling, and you typically don’t run into any issues accessing your online banking as long as you’re on a trusted device with a Wi-Fi connection. On the other hand, if you lose access to your device, it can be a pain to try and access your online banking with an institution whose primary 2FA method is entirely app- or smartphone-based.
Therefore, I’d highly recommend having a few fallback options, whether activating multiple 2FA methods for the same financial institution, or using multiple financial institutions. If you run into trouble, it will likely be time consuming to regain access to your accounts, but at least you’ll still have access to your finances from around the world.
Two-factor authentication is the ubiquitous best practice in modern digital security, and it’s helpful to remember how to get past this extra step to access your accounts whenever you travel or are away from home.
With Canadian telecom rates – and especially roaming rates – being some of the highest in the world, it’s important to do whatever you can to keep costs low when abroad. Fortunately, many institutions now offer Wi-Fi-friendly alternatives to receive verification codes, but it’s disappointing that so many companies still rely exclusively on SMS-based two-factor authentication.
Regardless, you should be able to manoeuvre your way around most 2FA hurdles that come up, using some strategies to dodge the pain of $15-a-day international roaming fees unless they absolutely cannot be avoided.
Until next time, transact undisturbed.

If you’re planning an upcoming trip, your to-do list is probably already a mile long. But before you leave, it may be in your best interest to keep your credit card issuer in the know with a travel notice.
“If you’re using your credit card in a new location, especially a foreign country, that’s a huge red flag for potential fraud,” says Lee Huffman, a travel expert at BaldThoughts.com .
To protect itself and you, your issuer may end up declining the charge.
If this happens, you’ll typically have to call the issuer to prove you attempted to make the purchase and get the go-ahead to try again. But it can still be an embarrassing experience.
“My wife and I were visiting friends in Dallas a few years back and were buying some groceries,” Huffman says. “When it came time to pay, my card was declined as a potentially fraudulent transaction. I was beyond embarrassed to have this happen in front of my wife and friends.”
If you’re overseas or visiting an area with bad cell service, it could get even worse. If you can’t get ahold of your bank and don’t have a backup payment method, you may end up stranded.
To help avoid this potential hassle or an embarrassing situation, contact your bank to let it know your travel plans. It’s also a good idea to make sure your contact info with the issuer is up-to-date. That way, it can easily contact you if it spots an issue while you’re away.
How to set travel notifications with common credit card issuers
“The easiest method of placing a travel alert is to call the number on the back of your credit card,” Huffman says. “You can also send a secure message through the bank’s online portal.”
But if you don’t want to wait on hold for customer service or you’re leaving for your trip in the next few days and can’t wait for a message to be processed, you may have other options. And depending on the issuer, you may not even need to create a notification at all.
American Express
Because of the fraud detection practices the issuer uses, setting an American Express travel notification is unnecessary. In fact, there’s not even an option to create one online.
Bank of America
You can set up a Bank of America travel notice on your mobile app or through your online account.
How to set up a travel notice through your online account:
- Log in and hover over the “Help & Support” menu tab.
- Click on “Set Travel Notice” in the drop-down menu.
- Enter your destination(s), travel dates, contact number and card(s) you’re taking with you. Share any other travel details you think are relevant.
You can easily set up a Barclays travel alert through the mobile app or online:
- Log in to your account and go to Tools/My Travel.
- Share where you’re traveling to and the dates you’ll be gone.
Capital One
As with American Express, setting a Capital One travel notice isn’t necessary. While there still seems to be an option through your online account, clicking on it gives you the message, “Travel notifications are no longer needed!”
To set a Chase travel notification, start by logging into your online account:
- Click on the icon with three horizontal bars at the top left of your screen.
- Click on “Profile & Settings.”
- Scroll down to the bottom under “More Settings” and click on “Travel.”
- Click on “Update” at the far-right side of the credit card section.
- List your departure and return dates and your destination.
Chase travel notices require a bit more legwork to set up than alerts with other banks, but it may still be worth it if you want to avoid the trouble or embarrassment of being unable to use your card while traveling.
Rather than searching through your online account, Citi allows you to create travel notifications through its dedicated travel notice page .
- Click on “Set Up/Manage.”
- Log in using your user ID and password.
- Select the card you plan to take with you and click on “Add a Travel Notification.”
- Select which user(s) will have the card, your travel dates and destination.
You can also create a travel notification through Citi’s mobile app:
- Click on “Card Management.”
- Click on “Travel Notices.”
- This will take you to Citi’s Travel Notices page. Once there, click on “Add A Trip.”
- Select the card you plan to take with you.
- Enter your trip’s start and end date.
To set up a travel notification with Discover, start by logging into your account online.
- Select the card you’re planning to take with you.
- Click on the “Manage” menu tab at the top of your screen.
- Click on “Register Travel” under the “Manage Cards” section.
- Enter your destination(s) and trip dates.
Unlike most of the other top banks, U.S. Bank doesn’t allow you to create a travel notification through your online account. Instead, it recommends that you contact its customer service team directly.
Wells Fargo
If you want to take your Wells Fargo credit card with you, set up a Wells Fargo travel plans notice. You can do so through the bank’s mobile app or through your online account.
- Start by logging into your account.
- Hover over the “Accounts” drop-down menu at the top of the screen.
- Click on “Manage Travel Plans,” which is under the “Manage Cards” section.
- Enter your travel dates and destination(s).
What if I’m traveling to several places?
Depending on the issuer, you may be able to choose multiple destinations, so you don’t have to set a different travel alert every time you move to a different location.
Bottom line
Setting up credit card travel notices is a good idea if you want to avoid the hassle of contacting your credit card issuer while traveling. And while you’re at it, make sure you have the right card for your trip. For example, some of the best travel credit cards charge no foreign transaction fees , making them a great travel companion for overseas trips.
Some of them also offer special travel protections , such as travel accident insurance or trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which can reimburse you for some costs if your trip is canceled or cut short for a covered reason.
Shop around and compare several cards with your current one to make sure you’re getting as much value as possible.

Credit Card Travel Alerts: How to Set Them (and Why You Might Not Need To)
When you’re planning for a trip, especially an international one, you already have a huge to-do list.
You need to confirm your hotel plans, pack, check-in for your flight, and plan your activities for once you land.
The last thing that you want to happen when you arrive is to have your credit card declined.
Card issuers are constantly watching for fraud and taking steps to block scammers from using your card without your permission.
One common tactic is watching for unexpected changes in the location where you use your card. If you travel somewhere and use your credit card, your card issuer could decline it because they think s fraudster stole your card info.
Is there anything that you should do or a way to tell your card issuer when you’re traveling to make sure they don’t block your credit card?
What Are Credit Card Travel Notifications?
You can give your card issuer a credit card travel notification to help avoid having your card declined.
You’re telling your card issuer that you have travel plans, so it knows not to decline your card during your trip.
For example, if you live in Colorado and plan to fly to England, you’ll contact your card issuer and tell them when you plan to leave and when you plan to return. If the card issuer sees charges from stores in England during your travel dates, it will know they’re legitimate.
Some card issuers let you provide travel notifications through your account portal on the issuer’s website.
Usually, you’ll find the option somewhere in your account settings or personal information page.
However, things have changed:
Many card issuers don’t request, require, or even accept travel notifications anymore.
They rely on other methods to anticipate upcoming travel plans.
Why You Might Not Need to Set Them Anymore
Card issuers use multiple strategies to figure out when your traveling, even without providing a notification.
You booked travel on the card
One way that card issuers can tell if you’re planning to travel is based on your shopping habits.
If you book tickets for a flight using your credit card, your card issuer already knows that you have travel plans.
This is also true if you use your credit card rewards points to book your trip.
Since your card issuer can tell that you have travel plans based on your purchases, you don’t need to tell them about your trip.
The location of your card activity
A more subtle way for the card issuers to figure out your travel plans is based on other purchases you make.
You buy something at the airport just before you leave, your card issuer can probably guess that you’re about to get on a flight.
If your shopping habits change to include shopping at stores that people frequently use to prep for a trip that can also tip off your card issuer.
You're a frequent traveler
Card issuers also use your long-term purchase and travel history.
As a frequent flier, your card issuers probably expect you to travel on a regular basis and won’t worry about charges popping up from around the globe.
Travel Alerts for Top U.S. Card Issuers

While it’s always important to make sure that your card issuer has your contact information, keeping your contact info up to date is doubly important when you’re traveling.
Your credit card issuer might not contact you frequently, but one of the times that they’ll want to reach out is when they’re trying to verify whether a purchase is legitimate or not.
If you’re traveling and your card is declined, you may receive a call from your card issuer asking you whether you tried to make the purchase.
If you say yes, they can unblock your card instantly -- letting you complete the transaction.
This can save a lot of time compared to you having to call the card issuer, navigate a phone tree, wait on hold, and explain that you were the one trying to make the purchase rather than a fraudster.
Taking a few minutes to update your contact info with all your card issuers before you travel can save you some headaches down the road.
It’s also a good way to make sure that your contact info is current so your card issuers can reach you, even when you aren’t traveling.

For example, if you have two personal deposit accounts enrolled in the Value Program and 5 eligible product categories:
- One account would have 3 product categories, which means you would earn 1 Avion point for every $3 spent on debit in-store and online using the enrolled account.

- Check the number of points needed for your destination in the Air Travel Redemption Schedule.
- Destinations have a Maximum Ticket Price (All taxes and service fees are separate and are not part of the maximum ticket price). In the event that a ticket costs more than the allowed amount, the additional cost can be charged to your credit card or you can use your Avion points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD.
For example:
A flight from Toronto to Vancouver has a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. If the base fare of the flight you select is $825 CAD, you can charge the excess amount of $75 ($825-$750=$75), (plus taxes and fees) to your credit card or redeem points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD (75x100= 7500 points)
If the base ticket price exceeds the Maximum Ticket Price, the additional cost can either be charged to your credit card or you can use any remaining points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD to pay for the amount over the maximum ticket price. Terms and Conditions .
A flight from Toronto to Montreal requires 15,000 Avion points and has a Maximum Ticket Price of $350 CAD (all taxes and service fees are separate and are not part of the ticket price.)
The base fare of the flight you select is $400 CAD. This amount exceeds the maximum ticket price ($350 CAD) by $50.
You can either charge the excess amount of $50 (plus taxes and fees) to your credit card, or use any remaining points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD (50x100=5 000 points).

Yes, you can pay for your booking with a combination of points and credit card.

Other Avion Rewards members can redeem travel at a rate of 100 points =$1 CAD. A minimum of 1,000 points must be redeemed and the remaining balance can be paid with a credit card.
RBC Avion Visa cardholders who are redeeming Avion points for flights from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule can use their credit card to pay for taxes and fees and any amount above the Maximum Ticket Price.
RBC Avion Visa cardholders can also purchase additional points to use towards flights on the Air Travel Redemption Schedule and must have at least half of the required points for their booking in order to purchase additional points. The minimum amount of points to purchase is 1,000 and maximum is 15,000, and every 1,000 points costs $40 CAD plus applicable taxes.
Yes. There are three ways to redeem Avion points for first or business class seats.
Select either first class or business class before searching for flights. Then, redeem the required number of Avion points for the destination of your choice, up to the Maximum Ticket Price as indicated in the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. Finally, pay for the price difference between the Maximum Ticket Price and the total price of your first or business class ticket by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $1.00 CAD.
Redeeming for a flight from Toronto to Vancouver from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule requires 35,000 points for a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. If the cost of the flight you select in business class is $1,000 CAD, you can pay for the price difference of $250 by redeeming 25,000 additional points (100 points = $1 CAD). In total, you would need to redeem 60,000 points.
If you are an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege for Private Banking, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business or RBC Commercial Avion Visa cardholder, you can pay for the entire price of a first or business class ticket (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees) by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $2.00 CAD.
If a flight from Toronto to Vancouver in first class costs $3,200 CAD (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees), you would need to redeem 160,000 Avion points (100 points = $2 CAD)
Convert your Avion points to WestJet dollars or to British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage Miles or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Converting your Avion points gives you the flexibility to redeem for rewards and benefits these programs offer, including for first or business class seats. Once converted, points cannot be transferred or converted back to Avion points.
All travel reservations made over the phone will be subject to a $30 booking fee per ticket or hotel booking.
Avion Rewards members with an Avion Rewards Core Account can't make new bookings over the phone.

No, you can only redeem Avion points to pay down your RBC points-earning credit card balance through Pay Credit Card with Points.
Eligible Avion Rewards members with an RBC points-earning credit card can use their points to redeem towards eligible transactions as a statement credit.
Note: Clients must have an RBC points-earning credit card in order to Pay Back Purchases with Points and RBC Commercial Avion Visa is not eligible.
Here’s how to Pay Back Purchases with Avion points:
- Sign in to RBC Mobile or Online Banking
- Go to credit card transaction details page
- Double click on any particular transaction
- There will be transaction details like purchase date, merchant name etc. and a Pay with Points button
- Click on the Pay with Points button and go to the Pay Back with Points page where transaction details appear along with the current full points balance that is available
- Choose any amount of points to use to “offset” all or even just a portion of the purchase amount
- Redemption is completed with a confirmation and Avion points will be deducted from account balance right away
- A credit will be posted on credit card account within 1-2 business days with a description of “rewards redemption – merchant name”
Note: This feature is only available in the RBC Mobile app.
Pay In-Store with Points is a capability available in the RBC Launch app that allows you to redeem your Avion points for purchases completed in stores with an eligible mobile wallet (iOS and Samsung).
Any purchase transactions between $1 and $250 CAD completed through an eligible mobile wallet using your device qualify.
- Make sure you’ve downloaded the RBC Launch app. Sign in with your credentials and enable push notifications. There are 2 ways to redeem:
- Sign in to the RBC Launch app. Select the transaction banner at the top, and redeem points towards your last purchase with Apple Pay.
- Turn on push notifications for the RBC Launch app. We’ll let you know when your purchase is eligible to redeem points.
- Get started by selecting the Samsung Pay app icon or by swiping up from the bottom of your screen.
- Select Pay with Avion Rewards Points and choose how many points you’d like to use towards your purchase.
- Tap to pay, and your purchase is complete.
The full purchase amount will be charged to your credit card for your purchase and a statement credit for the points redemption will be applied on your credit card account within 2-3 business days from the date of your purchase. Your statement credit will indicate which merchant your transaction was made with.
You will still continue to earn Avion points for the full purchase amount even when you redeem points for that purchase.
All redemptions are final and cannot be cancelled or reversed once submitted. The points redeemed will remain as a statement credit towards your account balance even when you return or refund your purchase. The number of points redeemed may vary during promotional campaigns.
Note: Push notifications may display account information, such as account balance and transaction information, on the screen of your device in a locked state and in your device notification center. You can disable push notifications in your notification settings.

For one-time conversions, a minimum of 500 Avion points must be converted and they can only be converted in increments of 2 Avion points thereafter. For auto-convert, your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points will be automatically converted to Avion points when you have a minimum of 40 points in your Hudson’s Bay Rewards account and in increments of 4 Hudson’s Bay Rewards points thereafter.

Check out the individual perks and benefits of your points-earning account to see where you can maximize the value of your points.
Note: Points are transferred on a 1:1 basis, meaning the number of points you transfer will not change from one points-earning product to another. In addition, there is no fee to transfer points.
If you have more than one Avion points account, you can transfer points between most accounts that appear on your profile. Transfers are only eligible between points accounts that you own. Points earned by an authorized credit card user, belong to the primary credit cardholder.

No. Avion points transfers are final, and cannot be reversed or cancelled. However, if you choose the wrong points account for your transfer or need the points back into the account you transferred from, you can just set up another transfer. Don’t worry, you will not pay any fees, or experience any loss in the transfer.
Yes. If your business banking profile is linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points to or from your business rewards account online.
If your business banking profile is not linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points from or to your business rewards account by calling us at 1-800-769-2512 .
Avion points will be awarded based on how many points you have earned up until the day you opt out. As long as your personal deposit account remains open (and in good standing?), you will not lose the points you have previously earned when you opt out of the Value Program .
If you close a personal deposit account that is enrolled in the Value Program:
- The monthly fee rebate 1 you receive will be based on the number of eligible product categories you had and the specific account activities you completed (pre-authorized payment, direct deposit, eligible bill payment) in the previous calendar month. If you close your account on a day other than the last day of the calendar month, your monthly fee rebate will be pro-rated and paid on your next statement cycle date.
- Avion points are earned up until the day the account is closed and are based on debit purchases made from the first day of the calendar month through the date you close your account.
After closing your personal deposit account, you have 12 months to use your Avion points, which can be redeemed by calling the RBC Advice Centre at 1-800-769-2512 .
Yes you can. You will be able to redeem Avion points you have earned (based on the rates associated with the closed account) for up to 12 months after closure. You can also transfer your points to any active points account you have and redeem from there. If you are not ready to redeem your points, be sure to transfer them to an active account before your 12 months are up.
Once your order is shipped, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email that contains the tracking number.
For the Merchandise catalogue (not including Best Buy and Apple), Physical Gift Cards and Invest and Pay Loan orders, you can also check the shipping status on your Avion Rewards Activity Page:
- Click on Activity in the top menu
- On the Points tab, go to Available Transactions
- Click on the Reference Number of your order
- This will open a window that displays the order details including the most up to date shipping status, and the tracking link, if it's available.

Through the Value Program , Avion points are reported monthly and take into account all in-store and online debit purchases from, and returns to, an enrolled personal deposit account.
For example, say you purchase a $300 blender with your debit card in December and received your Avion points. In January, you return the blender and get a $300 credit to your personal deposit account, but you also make $500 in debit purchases. For January, you would be awarded points for $200 of your debit spend ($500 in debit purchases minus the $300 return). Alternatively, if in January you do not make any debit purchases and only return the $300 blender, you would not be awarded any points for January and 300 points will be removed from your points account.

For cash back offers, there is a holding period before it is moved to an earned status and available to be cashed out by a member. This holding period varies by merchant as it is dependent upon each merchants return window plus associated processing time which can typically be up to 120 days after the original transaction date. Once the holding period is complete it will move to the Earned tab within the activity dashboard.

Do i need to notify a credit card company when traveling.
If you have planned travel coming up, alerting your credit card issuers about your vacation plans can help to ensure that your charges aren't declined when you arrive. Here's how you can prepare yourself and your credit card for your next trip.
What is a credit card travel notice?
A travel notice is an alert to your credit card issuer that you'll be going on a trip to a different location. By giving this notice in advance, you're letting your credit card company know that you may be making charges from a different state or country.
Why should you notify your credit card company of travel?
Credit card companies check cardholders' accounts for any unusual or suspicious activity when a transaction occurs. If your company sees a charge from a location away from home, your issuer may think this is suspicious activity and decline the charge. If you're visiting a country or location where fraudulent charges occur more often, the chances of your credit card getting declined are higher when you don't alert your credit card issuer about your travel.
Do you need to notify your credit card company?
You're not required to notify your credit card company when you're going away on vacation, but it is highly recommended. By letting your credit card company know where you're going and for how long, your company will know that any card transactions from that location were likely authorized by you. Check with your credit card issuer to see if they have travel notification capabilities.
Traveling outside your city
If you're traveling to an area not far from home, it's unlikely that any credit card charges will be declined, so setting a travel notification may not be a necessity.
Traveling outside your state
As you travel further from home, the chance of charges being declined is higher. If you're visiting another state, you can notify your credit card company that you're going away to avoid any hassles as you travel.
Traveling outside your country
You should definitely consider filing a travel notice for every trip outside your country. If you don't file a travel alert with your card issuer, your credit card may get declined and you might need to contact your credit card company to approve your transactions. If you're in a different country you may have trouble with making an international call, an inconvenience that can prevent you from authorizing your charge and enjoying your trip.
Which credit cards require a travel notice?
Not all credit card companies recommend that you set a travel notice before you go away, including those with EMV chips that may provide added security when you travel. If your credit card doesn't have an EMV chip, you should contact your bank before you leave to make sure your trip goes smoothly.
Multiple credit cards
If you own multiple credit cards, you should set travel notifications for each of the cards you plan to use on vacation. Even if you plan to use one of the cards only in case of emergency, set a travel alert for it just in case.
Risks of not filing a credit card travel notice
If you don't give your credit card issuer a travel notice, the company won't know that you'll be making purchases in a new location. If the company starts to see charges on your credit card from a different state or country, it may flag these transactions as fraud. The credit card issuer may then put your account on hold and prevent you from making any purchases until you can authorize the charges.
Once a credit card is declined, the cardholder has to call the issuer or provide an app verification in order to prove that the purchase made was authorized. You may have difficulties contacting your bank for various reasons, such as if your vacation spot has bad cell service or if you didn't set up international calling for your phone plan. Notifying your credit card company before you leave on vacation will help you avoid this hassle.
How to notify your credit card company of travel
You can notify your credit card issuer about your vacation over the phone, online, through a mobile app or in person. You can also contact your credit card issuer to get a better understanding of how to set a travel notice.
Setting your travel notice online or through a mobile app
Setting your travel notification online or through an app can be easier than speaking with customer service, depending on your preferences. Log into your account on your credit card company's website or app and search for “travel notice" options. If you're unable to find where to set your travel notice, get in contact with your credit card issuer.
Setting your travel notice over the phone or in-person
To set a travel alert for your credit card over the phone, call the number on the back of your card to get in touch with your bank. The customer service line will either let you speak to a representative on the phone or work with an automated system. If you have any questions or concerns about your travel notice, calling your credit card company is a good method to set the notification.
If you want to set your travel notice in person, go to your nearest branch to meet with a representative. Meeting face-to-face gives you the chance to ask any questions you might have.
