Ketchikan Small Ship Cruises

Adventure Cruises in Ketchikan

Ketchikan Cruises offer the chance to discover stunning natural landscapes, enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, spot diverse wildlife, learn more about the local people, dine on fresh and tasty fish, and relax as you drift through the scenic waters. With a history dating back to the 1880s and founded on the fishing industry, the city also has the claim to fame of having the biggest collection of standing totem poles in the world! Alaska’s most southeastern city, Ketchikan sits on Revillagigedo Island, one of the islands in the Alexander Archipelago. Explore the area’s many delights on adventure cruises to Ketchikan.

Things to do & see in Ketchikan

Cruises around Ketchikan are the perfect way to explore the area’s dramatic landscapes, learn about the local culture, and enjoy varied activities. Some of the best things to enjoy whilst on a Ketchikan cruise include:

Dine on Fresh Fish and Seafood - Ketchikan is proud to be known as the “Salmon Capital of the World”. Tuck into fresh and tasty locally caught fish and savor the flavor of different types of wild salmon, including Alaskan King Salmon, Chum Salmon, Pink Salmon, Red Salmon, and Sockeye Salmon. Halibut is also abundant, and you can try other local specialties such as cod, crab, and rockfish. Watch fish swimming through the waters, and perhaps take a fishing adventure cruise to catch your own dinner.

Learn about the Local Mining Industry - Ketchikan has a mining history, and you can discover old gold and copper mines as part of your Ketchikan cruise itinerary. Descend into the dark depths of the mines, see old mining equipment, and learn about life in the pits and within a mining community.

Spot an Array of Wildlife - Ketchikan wildlife encounters let you get up close and personal with a fascinating assortment of creatures. Look out for humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and seals swimming through the waters, and see ravens, bald eagles, and other birds soaring through the skies. Deer, mountain goats, minks, bears, and wolves are among the animals that roam the land. Tongass National Forest and Behm Canal are some of the best places to see various wildlife, while Stephens Passage is terrific for whale watching.

Discover the Local Culture - Admire Ketchikan’s many standing totem poles and be enchanted at a traditional tribal house, such as Chief Shakes Tribal House in Wrangell. See native art and architecture, be entertained by cultural performances, including dancing and music, and learn more about the skills required for delicate totem pole carving.

Get the Adrenaline Pumping with Outdoor Activities - Have fun on the waters in a kayak or a skiff, or try paddleboarding. Keen hikers will be pleased, especially at Stephens Passage . Whether you prefer glacial terrain or rainforest, a Ketchikan adventure cruise provides fantastic experiences in the great outdoors.

Admire Stunning Landscapes - Small ship cruises through Ketchikan take you through picturesque and photogenic places that will leave you in awe. From the glorious Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm , where you may be lucky enough to see ice calving away from the large block, to the Misty Fjords National Monument, with cascading waterfalls, sparkling deep blue lakes, scenic glacial valleys, and snow-topped mountains, there is a lot to feast your eyes on while onboard your Ketchikan cruise.

Top Tips for visiting Ketchikan

  • Ketchikan is a very wet destination, with rain almost all throughout the year. Make sure you pack wet weather gear.
  • Dress in layers to cope with the unpredictable weather conditions and temperatures. While you must dress for the cold, the sunny summer days can catch you off guard!
  • Take sunglasses on your Ketchikan cruise, especially if traveling in the summer.
  • Have a change of clothes to hand for after-water-based adventure activities like kayaking and paddleboarding.
  • Ketchikan offers some terrific hiking opportunities; pack suitable walking shoes/boots.
  • Try the local salmon and halibut; Ketchikan is famous for its seafood and fish.
  • Don’t forget to take your camera to capture the majesty of Dawes Glacier.
  • Pack your long-zoom lenses for the best wildlife pictures, and bring binoculars for close-up views of the local creatures.

The best time to cruise Ketchikan

The best time to visit Ketchikan is during the summer months of June to August. Temperatures are at their warmest, and you can enjoy sunny days. Summer also lets you see migrating creatures, such as humpback whales, returning to the area. On the other hand, April in Ketchikan is an ideal time to see hummingbirds returning after the winter.

If you are hoping to spot the Northern Lights from your Ketchikan cruise, plan ahead and arrange your trip for the summer.

The driest months are generally April to June, while September and October are often rainiest. Rain is common in Ketchikan, however, all throughout the year.

Where do Ketchikan cruises depart from?

You can fly to Ketchikan International Airport (KTN) and then take a short boat ride to the harbor for your Alaska adventure cruise from Ketchikan. Ferries and water taxis carry passengers to the harbor. There is no road access to Ketchikan.

Domestic flights serve Ketchikan from various airports around Alaska, including Anchorage, Craig, Coffman Cove, and Edna Bay. There are flights from several mainland US cities, including Seattle , Fresno, Eugene, Houston, Austin, Denver, and Salt Lake City. (Note that a flight change may be needed depending on your chosen route.)

Inside Passage Cruises

Cruise vacations along the alaska’s world renowned inside passage featuring amazing glacier scenery and unique small towns..

Home » Tours » Alaska Cruises » Inside Passage Cruises

An Alaska cruise vacation is truly impressive. You can arrive or depart on a different unique route – through Alaska’s glacier-lined, wildlife-filled, and smooth-sailing waterways of Alaska’s Inside Passage . Alaska’s Inside Passage is a water route between the Gulf of Alaska and Puget Sound. This popular Alaska cruise ship route usually features stops at a handful of Alaska and British Columbia ports and is known for its calm waters, boundless history, and spectacular scenery.

Along the Inside Passage, cruise passengers can see countless wildlife in the water (whales, orcas, sea lions, and seals), on the ground (bears), and in the air (eagles, raptors, and many water birds). There are over a thousand islands, millions of trees, dozens of glaciers, and a handful of Alaska’s quieter or hard-to-reach communities – Ketchikan , Wrangell , Prince of Wales Island, Sitka , Juneau , Haines, Skagway , Glacier Bay , among others.

A cruise through the Inside Passage also provides access to more than a dozen state and national parks and preserves, including the renowned Tongass National Forest , Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Misty Fjords National Monument, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve . If you look closely, you will also be treated to traces of Alaska history along the Inside Passage in totem poles, Russian-influenced architecture, and gold rush remnants.

The average cruise through the Inside Passage takes around seven days, but you can go beyond the cruise with shore excursions featuring an array of outdoor adventures (kayaking, fishing, and bear viewing, to name a few). Sightseeing trips via seaplanes or boats take you up close to wildlife and glaciers, lodging options, and nearby communities.

Most Alaska cruise ships that travel the Inside Passage make their voyages from May through September, so plan and book accordingly.

Best Time to Visit Alaska

From early April into May, Southeast Alaska awakens. Bears, baby animals, migrating grey whales and birds, budding forests, snow-covered peaks, gushing waterfalls, and Aurora Borealis sightings can be part of your experience. Plus, it's crowd-free.

Long days of Alaska summers mean extra playtime. Temps are warmer, so there's better access to higher elevation hikes. And humpbacks are back en masse. Come summer's end and into early fall, wildlife gets busy—mating, migrating, and feeding up for winter.

Our owner, Captain Dan Blanchard, put together a handy chart for the best times to visit Alaska. Download it below!

Testimonials

"Our week in SE Alaska aboard the Wilderness Discoverer was spectacular. The activities: kayaking in Glacier Bay and the skiff tour to LeConte Glacier were highlights. The meals: each dish was chef quality. Especially the seafood. The crew: every one of them was extremely friendly and professional. And the guides: very knowledgable and entertaining. Of course, all of this high-level experience is made possible by the amazing Captain. We will definitely recommend UnCruise to all who will listen."

"We are so grateful to the Uncruise team for our unforgettable cruise through Glacier Bay National Park! A 7-day adventure cruise was a long-held dream for me and my husband, and Uncruise exceeded our expectations. Southeast Alaska is stunning, and the amazing team on board our cruise made the experience even more phenomenal. The staff are so friendly, fun and eager to share all they know about the area. Thank you, UnCruise!"

A Cruise Aboard the M/V David B is the Best Way to Experience Alaska’s Powerful Nature

A photo captures Alaska’s essence, not the emotion of mist from a cascading three thousand-foot waterfall settling on your face. The way to experience the powerful nature of Alaska is to immerse yourself in it — right up close.

Walk quietly among the lichen-draped trees in an ancient forest or along the edge of a still pond where dragonflies perch on yellow pond lilies.

Breathe in the forest’s rich mossy air as overhead a raven’s wing brushes past mature boughs.

Paddle past the fantastically shaped icebergs where perched bald eagles watch your every move.

Spot a brown bear, previously hidden at the forest’s edge, make a gentle movement, and for a moment you watch each other closely before she blends back into the greens, browns, and shadows of the old-growth forest.

Watch in awe as a humpback mother and calf playfully breach and splash.

Immerse Yourself in the Heart of Alaska’s Untamed Beauty

We believe the essence of Alaska can only be fully appreciated by diving deep into its natural wonders. With us, you’re not just passing through, you’re becoming part of the majestic landscapes and vibrant ecosystems that define this wilderness. The magic of immersion only happens when you have the time to pause, look around, and absorb all that surrounds you. The pace of our small ship Alaska cruises on the David B is intentionally slow. We focus on the spaces between the destinations: the experiences, the emotions, and nature. This means you’ll see more, you’ll feel more, and you’ll gain more. It’s about your senses.

Ketchikan cruise port map + where do cruise ships dock in Ketchikan? 🏔 Alaska cruise tips

So if you’re a paper map type of person (I am!) and you want to walk around downtown Ketchikan, the first thing you’ll want to do once you walk off the cruise ship is go to the Ketchikan Visitor’s Bureau!

This is quite literally right in front of the cruise ship… well, it’s in front of the cruise ship that’s at berth 2!

So if your cruise ship is docked in downtown Ketchikan (which is all major cruise lines not named NCL), then you’ll be just a short walk away from getting your Ketchikan map at the visitor center!

Otherwise, for planning purposes, I’ve created an interactive google map below that includes some of the top attractions, which is based on my 5 cruise ship visits to Ketchikan. You can decide if you want to do any of these things!

These are things you can do on your own, whether it’s walking around downtown or getting there by bus or shuttle.

ketchikan cruise port map

Where do cruise ships dock in Ketchikan?

Most major cruise lines dock in downtown Ketchikan. This includes Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, and Disney.

There are 4 berths downtown, and depending on which one you’re at, it will be closer (1 minute walk!) or further (15 minute walk) to the heart of downtown Ketchikan.

If you’re on a Norwegian cruise ship (NCL), then you will dock at Ward Cove which is outside of town. You will require a shuttle to get to downtown Ketchikan. It’s important to plan for this shuttle time. See more about Ward Cove .

You can see exactly where your cruise ship will dock (berth 1, 2, 3, or 4) by looking at the Alaska cruise port schedule for 2024 .

There will be numbers for downtown Ketchikan berths, and Ward Cove is indicated as WW or WE. (For Ward Cove, it’s the same pier so it really does not make a difference which you are at. You will be on one side or the other of the same pier.)

If you see something else listed next to your cruise ship, you can check the berth codes pdf .

Although as always, schedules can change.

If your cruise is in 2025, you can have the 2025 schedule bookmarked and check back later for the berth assignments as your cruise date gets closer.

Side note! Read Ketchikan cruise port tour reviews at partner website Viator!

Here are fun tours in Ketchikan cruise port you must consider that people have loved:

  • Cheap(er) and easy excursion: Ketchikan walking tour with Alaskan huskies
  • Deadliest Catch fisherman’s tour : You will be on a boat that is as seen on TV and one of Ketchikan’s most popular things to do. (Don’t worry, you won’t be sailing to the rough Bering Sea that’s seen on TV 🤪)

  • Highlights and hidden gems small group tour: Ketchikan Alaska in a ’67 VW van tour

Guest Reviews

On aug 2024.

Jody was the best!!! She structured the day around what we wanted to see and took us to some beautiful places teaching us about the area the whole time. We had the best day with her!!

We had 3 kids in our party and the guide catered to them to ensure the tour appealed to them as well. It was great. We didn't see a bear but we got a deep dive in local life which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We had a GREAT tour! Syd was knowledgeable, kind, and adapted our tour to our interests. We picked this private tour because the cruise excursions did not allow children under 12 on land-based tours to see bears. Not only did we see salmon and bears we also got to go berry picking and explore the beach. My kids loved all of it.

On Jun 2024

It was very nice and our tour guide was nice and interesting.

Loved our driver she was amazing with all our questions, needs and showing us places and sharing the stories. She took us to amazing places and also gave us time to explore them properly.

1 dead, 3 injured in Alaska landslide

A landslide damaged houses in the city of ketchikan and caused a mandatory evacuation.

Alaska Landslides

The aftermath of a deadly landslide is seen in Ketchikan, Alaska, Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024.

Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — One person was killed and three were injured by a landslide that prompted a mandatory evacuation in the Alaska city of Ketchikan, authorities said.

Three people were transported to Ketchikan Medical Center following the landslide, which struck around 4 p.m. Sunday and damaged homes and infrastructure, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and the City of Ketchikan said in a joint statement Sunday.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared an emergency for Ketchikan, while Borough Mayor Rodney Dial and city Mayor Dave Kiffer issued a separate emergency declaration.

“Friends, is with a heavy heart we relay that a landslide in the city has taken a life, caused several injuries, damaged homes and impacted our community,” Dial said in the statement.

Kiffer said the loss of life was “heartbreaking, and my heart goes out to those who lost their homes.”

“In my 65 years in Ketchikan, I have never seen a slide of this magnitude. With the slides we have seen across the region, there is clearly a region-wide issue that we need to try to understand with the support of our State geologist,” Kiffer said.

AP20248033286084.jpg

Ketchikan is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, a temperate, mountainous rainforest that encompasses much of southeast Alaska, where landslides are a common risk. Last November, six people — including a family of five — were killed when a landslide destroyed two homes in the southeast Alaska community of Wrangell , about 100 miles (161 kilometers) to the north. Torrential rains caused a landslide in December 2020 that killed two people in Haines .

Two of the victims in Ketchikan, a city of about 8,000 people at the southern tip of Alaska’s famed Inside Passage and a popular cruise ship stop, were admitted to the hospital and one was treated and released. All other individuals have been accounted for, the statement said.

Multiple homes were impacted by the landslide and a mandatory evacuation was ordered for residents of Third Avenue and nearby streets, while a shelter was set up at Ketchikan High School, the borough and city said.

A potential secondary landslide area was identified to the south of the original slide location and crews were standing by, the statement said.

Power was restored to some affected areas by 8:15 p.m. Other areas will remain without power while the landslide is cleared and broken power poles are replaced, the borough and city said.

Various local and state agencies responded to the landslide in the southeastern Alaska city located about 297 miles (478 kilometers) south of Juneau, the state capital.

A Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Response Specialist and federal Department of Transportation personnel are expected to travel to Ketchikan on Monday, Dunleavy said.

“I have directed state agencies to make available all resources and staff for the response effort,” Dunleavy said, noting the city was receiving assistance from the State Emergency Operations Center.

Remember 2 Things: The After Effects of a Disaster Response

The landslide followed a weekend bout of rain amid an abnormally dry August for the region, said Andrew Park, a meteorologist in Juneau with the National Weather Service. The heaviest rainfall came overnight Saturday and moved south through the Ketchikan area on Sunday.

The event occurred absent of some of the red flags meteorologists typically look for, such as high winds, Park said.

“There weren’t any of the big red flags we would normally see,” said Park, although he said landslides can be relatively unpredictable.

He said the region seeing landslides of different magnitudes isn’t rare, even on dry days, but “we don’t really see the impacts” because the population density is so small.

“If you ever fly over the panhandle and you look down, you can see landslide scars all over the place — massive landslide scars,” he said. “In terms of, is it unusual for it to impact our cities? Very. This is a very unusual event. But landslides are not unusual to our region.”

Landslides tend to garner little notice when they strike in remote, unpopulated areas, but they also have the potential to cause immense catastrophes. As climate change intensifies storms and wildfires, destabilizing soil, the risk increases.

Landslides include debris flows often triggered by heavy rains. When logging or fire destroys trees, the loss of root structure can weaken soil. Rain that isn’t being sucked up by plants can saturate the ground, making it more likely to slide. Other types include creeps, which move slowly downward, and rock falls.

In Alaska, melting permafrost, retreating glaciers, earthquakes and pounding rains can trigger landslides.

Main Wild Alaska Escape: LeConte Bay, Wrangell & The Misty Fjords Itinerary

The main 6-day Wild Alaska Escape: LeConte Bay, Wrangell & The Misty Fjords cruise travels southbound, beginning in Juneau and ending in Ketchikan.

Route map for main, southbound Wild Alaska Escape small ship cruise from Juneau to Ketchikan, with visits to Leconte Glacier & Thomas Bay, Wrangell Narrows, Behm Canal & Misty Fiords & Sumner Strait.

Arrive in Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, in the early afternoon and embark the ship in time for cocktails and an introduction of the vessel staff and crew.

National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion

Today explore either LeConte Bay or Tracy Arm. These areas feature some of the most active glaciers in Southeast Alaska. Icebergs regularly break off from glaciers, getting caught in shallow moraines and along the shorelines as they float out of the bay. Your experienced captain will evaluate the underwater morraine outside of LeConte Bay or Tracy Arm, where you’ll set out by Zodiac to navigate among these surreal floating sculptures. Take advantage of spectacular photographic opportunities, practicing tricks and tips from your certified photo instructor.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around the ship. Explore the coast by kayak or expedition landing craft and go ashore to trace bear trails through forests intersected by crystalline salmon streams while learning about the rainforest ecosystem from the naturalists. Fix those binoculars on the banks to spot Sitka black-tailed deer and moose, as well as black bears, wolves and bald eagles that frequent the shoreline in search of plentiful salmon.

This morning arrive in the small town of Wrangell. The Tlingit and their ancestors have made this island their home for thousands of years. Take an optional jet boat excursion up the Stikine River or explore town, including a visit to Chief Shakes Tribal House and the Petroglyph Beach, home to the highest concentration of petroglyphs in Southeast Alaska. This afternoon cruise Eastern Passage and Blake Channel, narrow waterways on the backside of Wrangell island where other ships rarely venture.

Wake up this morning to catch the sunrise over the stunning cliffs of Misty Fjords National Monument, rising more than 2,000 feet above the deep blue waters of the fjord. Watch wisps of cloud drift down the winding waterway and drape over green peaks as the ship cruises through the mists that give this extraordinary landscape its name. Set out by expedition landing craft and kayak to get close to the forested banks and the many dramatic waterfalls cascading down the cliffs.

Arrive in Ketchikan, the southernmost city in Alaska, spread at the base of sylvan slopes on Revillagigedo Island. Visit the Totem Heritage Center to view a unique collection of 19th-century Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian totem poles from abandoned villages around Ketchikan before embarking the ship.

Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around our ship. Explore the coast by kayak or expedition landing craft and go ashore to trace bear trails through forests intersected by crystalline salmon streams and learn about the rain forest ecosystem from naturalist guides. Fix binoculars on the banks to spot Sitka black-tailed deer and moose, as well as black bears, wolves and bald eagles that frequent the shoreline in search of plentiful salmon.

Today we explore either LeConte Bay or Tracy Arm. These areas feature some of the most active glaciers in Southeast Alaska. Icebergs regularly break off from glaciers, getting caught in shallow moraines and along the shorelines as they float out of the bay. Your experienced captain will evaluate the underwater moraine outside of LeConte Bay or Tracy Arm, where you’ll set out by Zodiac to navigate among these surreal floating sculptures. Take advantage of spectacular photographic opportunities, practicing tricks and tips from your certified photo instructor.

Arrive in Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, situated on the banks of the Gastineau Channel at the base of Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts. Enjoy breakfast aboard ship. Then, disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight home.

The reverse Wild Alaska Escape: Juneau & Ketchikan cruise begins in Ketchikan Alaska (KTN) and ends in Juneau, Alaska (JNU). Plan flights to arrive to Ketchikan by 3:00pm on Day 1 of the itinerary. Disembarkation is after breakfast on Day 6 of the outlined itinerary. Plan flights to depart Juneau no earlier than 1:00pm on the final day.

Whether you are looking for light activity options or more challenging outdoor pursuits, the ship’s crew can tailor most excursions to suit your skill level. Adventure activities may include hiking, kayaking, inflatable boat/skiff excursions, photography, morning yoga and stretching, land treks, glacier viewing, whale watching and wildlife observation.

In addition to listed Solo cabin rates, select double-occupancy cabins may be available for single occupancy with a single supplement fee. If you would like to share accommodations with another guest of the same gender, we will be happy to try to accommodate you in select cabin categories. This program allows you to pay the per person double-occupancy rate whether or not a roommate is found. Contact AdventureSmith for further details and availability.

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.
