The Public Transport Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has enhanced the interface of their Wojhati journey planner smart application by incorporating new details about the journey at the moment of entering and saving the last five journeys planned in advance.

Eisa Al Hashemi, Director of Planning and Business Development of the agency, said the latest enhancement will enable the Wojhati program to automatically erase the particulars of the oldest journey once the user plans a sixth journey.

He said the new interface also displays bus timetables and bus stops, and enables accurate calculation of the fare without visiting the NOL portal. The initiative comes in the context of the RTA’s initiatives aimed at supporting the use of Wojhati system among public transport users from various community segments.

Al Hashemi said the new features include displaying the ‘Area Map’, which in turn, displays the routes passing by the area along with the ‘Route Map’. “Once the user inserts the Route Number, the entire route will be displayed as well as the sequence of stops along the route.”

Information on intercity services can also be accessed on the application. “Wojhati users can figure out the details of inter-city journeys to Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaima and Fujairah, including the duration and the fare of the journey, making journey planning a more integrated process.”

‘Wojhati' helps commuters plan their trips around the emirate

Dubai: Dubai has become the fifth city in the world, following London, New York, Munich and Melbourne, to provide a journey planner for commuters.

The journey planner, named ‘Wojhati', was launched earlier this year by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) as part of its efforts to encourage people to use public transport in the city.

"The Agency has added more than 14,000 landmarks, 34,000 commercial outlets, 1,919 bus stops [including bus stops for the Metro Stations Feeder Service] in Dubai to the Wojhati database," said Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Dossari, CEO of the RTA's Public Transport Agency.

He said journey planner kiosks had been installed at all Metro stations in order to help the public plan their journeys in advance and benefit from the integrated public transport systems.

"The provision of journey planners at all Metro stations makes it easy for commuters to use Wojhati in their travels across the city, and enables them to plan their travels at any time, even when they are on the move," he noted.

The system displays information about the routes and schedules of public buses, the Metro and the water buses.

Once the user enters the station number, the system displays various Metro lines together with a map of Dubai. The user has the option to customise the display of information to suit his or her journey.

The system is easy to use. Users can log on to the RTA website (www.rta.ae) and follow the simple steps. The RTA has already received more than 3,025 phone calls about Wojhati, showing increasing public interest in the service.

Welcome to RTA

Transit App + RTA

Transit is RTA’s officially endorsed mobile app, and provides real-time arrival information for transportation services across the region. Whether you’re checking where the bus is, planning a trip to somewhere new, or want to pay your bus fare, Transit and RTA have you covered.

journey planner rta

Getting started

When you first open the app, Transit uses your location to pinpoint the bus routes and other transportation services that are nearby.

Note: Be sure to allow Transit to access your location data during the setup process.

The route display provides pertinent information such as the route numbers, direction, and the name of the closest stop.

Swipe left or right on a route to switch between inbound and outbound route information. When you see a flashing wave icon next to an arrival prediction, that means there’s a GPS tracker on the bus providing the prediction.

Note: Since real-time arrival is based on current bus location, these predictions may change depending on traffic or weather conditions.

journey planner rta

Tracking your bus

When you tap a route for more information, you’ll see a screen showing a route map, the next three departures, active and future alerts, and a list of stops – all in one place!

journey planner rta

Planning your trip

From the main screen, tap the green search bar to plan a trip or search for a specific transit line. The icon on the right estimates travel times to your favorite destinations, like home or work.

When you choose an origin and destination, you can compare trips side by side. Tap a result for more details.

Service alerts

Service advisories from RTA are displayed in the app. When an alert is active, you will see an exclamation mark beside the route number. You can also choose to receive push notifications to your phone when alerts are issued.

Always take the same routes? Tap a route and then tap the star icon to add it to your favorites. Favorite routes always show up at the top of the list on the home screen when they are nearby. You can also view and modify your favorite routes and service alert subscriptions on the Settings page.

Paying your fare

Buying an RTA ticket on Transit is easy.

Start by tapping the “Buy Ticket” button.

journey planner rta

Choose the ticket you want to purchase.

journey planner rta

Enter your payment information.

Confirm your purchase, and choose to use your ticket now or save it for later.

journey planner rta

When you’re ready to ride, activate your ticket. Look for the contactless scanner which is installed at the front of the bus. Scan your phone against the reader until the light turns green. A single beep indicates successful payment.

WHERE ARE MY TICKETS?

Tap the “gear” icon (top left corner of the main screen). Under “My tickets,” you can see the passes you have available, or purchase additional fares.

HOW DO I GET FREE TRANSFERS?

Base $2 fares purchased in Transit are valid for 90 minutes and eligible for free transfers system-wide. This means that buying your fare with Transit is a big upgrade over regular cash fares, which do not support transfers.

WHAT IS FARE CAPPING?

With fare capping, instead of buying passes in advance, you can also simply pay for each ride as you go. Once you’ve ridden enough to earn an unlimited pass, boom! You’ll be upgraded, you won’t be charged for additional rides until that pass expires.

This means you’ll never pay more than the cost of a day pass in a day, or more than the cost of a month pass in a month. You only pay for the trips you actually take – saving you money, and giving you more flexibility.

Senate budget would make regional transit free and better connected

A man in a blue suit and a woman in a black and white jacket stand in an office.

  • katielannan

A $58 billion budget proposal that state senators will debate later this month focuses on education access and “regional equity” in public transit, top Democrats said Tuesday.

The Senate’s plan has a similar total price tag to the version already approved by the House but spends the money differently, proposing both universally free community college and major investments in child care affordability .

Those education initiatives would be backed up with money from the millionaires tax that voters approved in 2022. Budget-writers are expecting that tax to bring in $1.3 billion for the next fiscal year, which starts in July. The Senate bill would split that money so 57% goes to education and 43% goes to transportation.

In what could create a showdown between the Senate and the House, Senate leaders are taking a different approach to transportation spending.

While the House went big on the MBTA, the Senate is instead instead proposing a new vision for the state’s regional transit authorities, dedicating $40 million for year-round free fares at all RTAs and another $10 million for bus routes linking communities served by different agencies.

Along with the MBTA, Massachusetts is home to 15 different regional transit authorities that provide bus and paratransit service in distinct areas. Some, like those in the Worcester and Lawrence areas, already run fare-free service.

In all, the Senate budget proposes $214 million for RTAs, up from the $184 million backed by the House. The House budget calls for a record $555 million investment in the MBTA, with leaders in that chamber saying a safe and reliable public transit system is key to the state's economy.

The Senate's plan invests a total of $361.5 million in the T, and omits the House's $40 million for an “MBTA Academy” to recruit and train new workers.

Senate Ways and Means Committee Chair Michael Rodrigues, a Westport Democrat, said RTAs serve “primarily the lowest-income residents of the commonwealth.” He described the money to help interconnect RTAs across agency borders as a bid to make the system “seamless.”

“We looked at transportation holistically, for every RTA, and we made significant new investments in our RTAs for regional equity,” Rodrigues said.

“For instance, in my neck of the woods, Fall River, we're part of SRTA, Southeastern Regional Transit Authority. Taunton is part of [Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority], and then Brockton is part of Brockton regional,” Rodrigues said. “So you cannot get public transportation from Brockton to Fall River, and those three RTAs are already working on a plan, if they can get funded, just to run a bus up and down Route 24, and you can connect three RTAs and allow citizens to go anywhere.”

One area of common ground between the House and Senate is funding for the emergency shelter system that has stretched beyond its capacity to accommodate the continued influx of migrants, asylum-seekers and other new arrivals.

Both budget bills allocate $325 million in shelter money, and state officials next year will also be able to pull another $175 million from a savings account under previously passed legislation . That combined $500 million still falls well short of the roughly $900 million the Healey administration has estimated needing for shelters in fiscal 2025.

“We want to keep the pressure on the administration to make programmatic changes, to make it more efficient and affordable,” Rodrigues said. “And if you just throw all the money they want at it there's no incentive. We're saying, make it work. If they can't make it work, then come back to us and justify why you could not make this investment work.”

Senators have until Friday afternoon to file amendments to the budget proposal. Budget deliberations will kick off with opening speeches on Monday, May 20, with debate on amendments slated to start the next day.

After that, a team of six senators and representatives will reconcile the two spending bills to send a final version to Gov. Maura Healey. Negotiations traditionally drag past the July 1 start of the fiscal year.
