The Cult's Ian Astbury on his 'Belfast bloodline' and celebrating 40 years of Death Cult

David roy chats to the cult's frontman ian astbury about death cult 8323, the iconic rockers' new tour celebrating the band's earliest post-punk material, and the la-based singer's recently cemented belfast connection....

"IT WAS a massive adrenal dump," admits Ian Astbury, leader of The Cult, of how it felt to debut his band's new Death Cult 8323 set in Los Angeles last week.

"We'd been building up to it for months and then it went by so quickly – but, emotionally, it was supercharged."

The show at The Ace Hotel's Theatre in Astbury's adopted home city of Los Angeles was the only US date on the new tour celebrating The Cult's earliest material, dating all the way back to the singer's days as the teenage frontman of early-80s Bradford post-punk outfit, Southern Death Cult.

Thanks to all who came to commune with Death Cult in Los Angeles. It was a magical night, and we are happy to have shared it with you. We apologize for some of the merch items running out. The Cult bring the Death Cult 8323 tour to Ireland next week

"I don't think of it as a career," says Astbury of The Cult's 40 year journey to date, which includes last year's album Under The Midnight Sun.

Alice cooper and the cult to co-headline uk tour next year.

"I moved around a lot, went to a lot of different schools. I grew up in North America, went back to the UK. There's quite a lot of events that lead up to Death Cult."

Southern Death Cult only lasted for one single before the Cheshire-born singer split, taking part of the name with him to form Death Cult with ex-Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy – the man who would become his musical foil for the next four decades and counting.

Ian and Billy in the Death Cult days

Death Cult re-branded as The Cult in early 1984, a pivotal year which saw them making their TV debut on The Tube, releasing their debut LP Dreamtime and topping the UK indie charts with its superb lead single, Spiritwalker – an early example of Astbury's knack for combining a nascent interest in indigenous cultures and spiritualism with potent rock/pop hooks – and performing their first ever US dates.

The following year's Love album saw Astbury and co moving away from their post-punk roots to embrace some of the rock influences that had been more or less verboten since punk's 'year zero'.

Key anthems like Rain and breakthrough hit She Sells Sanctuary signposted the stadium-ready band that would emerge on 1987's Electric.

Indeed, the band's earliest work may come as something of a revelation for many who only know The Cult as leather-kekked 'rock gods': there's a tangible potency to much of Death Cult's hugely atmospheric material, on which Astbury's trademark vocals were already a force to be reckoned with.

Indeed, in those days he was already writing songs informed by 'heavy' life experiences.

"By the time I got to Death Cult, I was a pretty seasoned human," admits the singer, who lost his mother to cancer just prior to starting the band and had already learned how to survive as a perpetual 'outsider' thanks to family moves between England, Scotland and Canada during his school years.

"I'd had a lot of life experiences, even though I was in my early-20s. A lot of archetypal experiences as well, in the sense of life and death and existential questions, the threat of nuclear war, the threat of environmental consequences from industrialisation.

"We were growing up through all of that, and we still are. But it felt really concentrated in that period."

Perhaps that's why much of the Death Cult material still sounds surprisingly fresh and 'relevant' to today's turbulent times, when early-80s post-punk has once again become so influential on a fresh wave of disaffected young bands.

For Astbury himself, revisiting these songs live has proved to be more than he bargained for.

"It's my lived experience, so these are familiar memories," he tells me, "but it's incredible how visceral they became immediately when we start playing these songs again.

"I felt the actual emotional moment when the songs were created – I felt that as my dominant emotion while singing the songs, and I wasn't prepared for some of that.

"I wasn't equipped as a young person to make sense of how my life was unfolding in front of me. Whereas now I've had a lot more life experience, I can actually look at it and go like 'oh, yeah, I can see how this all went down: understanding my parents' relationship, understanding when both my parents got sick with cancer, understanding the way I was brought up, the schools I went to, the music I listened to.

"I was just intuitively drawn to certain things, whereas now I can actually have a little bit more of a deeper understanding of what was going on, when it comes to [my interest in] the psycho-spiritual realm, especially."

Belfast's early punk scene was also part of Astbury's pre-band life experience: the punk-loving frontman spent time living in a squat on the Newtownards Road after attending Terri Hooley's famous punk festival at the Ulster Hall in 1980.

"A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go with her to this amazing punk festival in Belfast," explains Astbury, who was then living in Birkenhead and immersed in Liverpool's punk scene.

"I thought it sounded really exciting, so we took the ferry over and she got us some accommodation with some of the punk kids, and we went to the festival.

"Belfast in 1980 was intense. I'd never experienced an environment like that – the army were throwing you up against the wall and beating you with batons.

"But I loved everybody I met in Belfast and hanging out at the Harp Bar. It didn't matter where we were from, because we were all punks."

More recently, The Cult man has discovered a familial link to the city.

"I'm mostly Scots, Irish and Welsh – and my great, great, great grandmother was born in Belfast," reveals Astbury.

"That's so auspicious, because when I went to Belfast, I felt partially at home. I didn't feel alien like I did in Canada – maybe also because the punk community there was so open.

"But I've definitely got a Belfast bloodline now."

Death Cult in 2023: Celebrating 40 Years of Musical Mastery // Live Review // The Telegraph Building // Belfast

the cult tour 2023 ireland

In the world of rock and roll, very few bands manage to stand the test of time. However, one iconic group, originally known as Death Cult, has defied the odds, evolving and thriving for four incredible decades. As they celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2023, a rollercoaster of a journey and their impact on the music scene, what makes Death Cult a true live entity?

Death Cult, now widely recognized as simply “The Cult,” was formed in 1983 by frontman Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. Originally known as Death Cult, they started as a post-punk band before evolving into a hard-hitting, rock ‘n’ roll sensation. The band’s name underwent a few changes over the years, and they’ve gone by The Southern Death Cult and eventually The Cult. Belfast 2023 sees the start of their Ireland and UK Tour, for the gathered masses here at The Telegraph Building this is an extraordinary occasion. The crowd is eclectic, young and old side by side to worship together, celebrate together and live this experience in the now, 40 Years of majestic sonic storytelling and we get to embrace every second of it this evening.

In support, we have Lili Refrain, a musician, and an artist based in Rome, Italy. Little was known of the support before Lili took to the stage, it’s how I like to absorb a new artist or band, in the flesh, with no preconceptions and totally open to whatever gets thrown at me but I have to say this is not what I expected. Like a lot of genres now we are seeing a real influx of traditional artists shining through, bands like The HU, a Mongolian Throat singing metal band, we are seeing the most extreme examples of what defines a band, a solo artist in mainstream gigs and live performances, but for sure today you have to be ready for anything. Lili was a breath of fresh air, as she kicked off her set there was that momentary pause as people stopped to take it all in, what is this? Where is this going to go, what we got was a glorious ambient explosion that really, nobody was prepared for. As the set went on you could see across the room a real appreciation for what Lili was doing, her skills looping drum patterns, Vocals and guitar work allowed for these huge ambient sounds to build and build into a crescendo, her vocals altering from something akin to chanting to almost operatic in range at times and everything in between. A truly unique sound, a unique artist and one that will no doubt be the topic of conversation at every Death Cult gig along this run.

The Belfast crowd show their appreciation as Lili’s set comes to a close, and by now the masses have indeed gathered and the spaces and getting smaller as the crowd clambers forward toward the stage inch by inch, I get my beautiful ass to the back to grab a spot in which to see above the sea of heads as the stage gets prepped for the arrival of tonight’s special guests.

A fiercely independent spirit marked this band’s early years, and their sound was a potent blend of rock, punk, and alternative music. Their self-titled debut album “Dreamtime” in 1984 and “Love” in 1985 showcased their raw, energetic style. These early works laid the foundation for their distinctive sound, fusing the power of rock with Astbury’s charismatic vocal style. One of the defining moments in The Cult’s career came with their 1987 album “Electric.” It significantly departed from their previous work, featuring a harder and more aggressive sound. The question is, with a four-decade back catalogue, which version of The Cult/Death Cult will the thirsty Belfast crowd see tonight? For many, the original and best version, the early days celebrated with tracks like ‘Go West’ ,’ Resurrection Joe’ and ‘She Sells Sanctuary’, those songs so steeped in Cult history and the soundtrack to so many people’s youths who are here tonight, this is what this is all about. It puts you right back to where you first heard these gems, the hairs standing on the back of your neck as you absorb these glorious tunes for the very first time, there is only one first time after all. Tonight though in Belfast sharing this soundtrack live with friends who you grew up with, to this very soundtrack.

Does it get any better? Death Cult’s commitment to live performances has been a cornerstone of their success. Their concerts are legendary for their energy and emotional depth, capturing the essence of their music. The band’s stage presence, coupled with their ever-evolving sound, has kept them relevant and captivating audiences for four decades. The band’s journey from Death Cult to The Cult, from post-punk to hard rock, has been a remarkable one. As they celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2023, their music continues to inspire and influence generations of music enthusiasts. With their unwavering commitment to live performances and their dynamic, ever-evolving sound, They stand as a testament to the enduring power of rock and roll. Here’s to 40 years of music that has rocked our souls and continues to do so with every electrifying performance.

For all those hardcore dedicated fans, a box was ticked this evening, for the younger fresh faces in the crowd, a musical education was delivered the only way this band knows how, with sheer class. Dublin is up next before the lads move onto the mainland, hearts and minds will be laid to waste so be prepared.

The Cult to Highlight Early Material on Death Cult Fall 2023 Tour

The Cult ’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy will honor their post-punk roots with a one-off tour this fall under their pre-fame moniker Death Cult.

The brief run will comprise one Los Angeles show on Oct. 23, with support from darkwave group Cold Cave, as well as a dozen shows in the United Kingdom in November. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday. You can see the full list of dates below.

Formed by Astbury and Duffy in 1983, Death Cult evolved out of Astbury’s previous band Southern Death Cult. The group released a self-titled EP and the single “Gods Zoo” in 1983 before rechristening itself as the Cult in early 1984.

The upcoming tour will honor all three phases of the band, focusing on Southern Death Cult, Death Cult and the Cult’s first two full-length albums: 1984’s Dreamtime and 1985’s Love , which spawned the breakthrough hit “She Sells Sanctuary.”

Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy to resurrect Death Cult for 40th anniversary concerts

The Cult’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Death Cult — the earlier, darker iteration of their long-running band — with a special one-off U.S. performance in Los Angeles this fall followed by a dozen dates in the U.K. and Ireland.

Billed as The Cult Presents Death Cult, the shows will find Astbury, Duffy and their current Cult bandmates performing a set built around the songs recorded by Death Cult before the band changed its name to The Cult. The shows also will feature songs by The Southern Death Cult — Astbury’s short-lived pre-Death Cult outfit — and selections from the first two albums by The Cult (1984’s Dreamtime and 1985’s Love ).

What’s being billed as the sole U.S. performance will take place Oct. 23 at The Theatre at  Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. The band will then perform that same celebration of The Cult’s origins and early years at a dozen shows in November in the U.K. and Ireland. See the full tour itinerary below.

Tickets for all of the Death Cult shows go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday, Aug. 18.

Watch The Cult’s website for ticketing details.

The Cult has other, previously announced U.S. dates through October, but the band’s representatives say those shows will instead be “traditional performances, spanning The Cult’s discography.”

Astbury formed the Southern Death Cult in 1981 with Barry Jepson, David “Buzz” Burrows and Haq Nawaz “Aky” Qureshi. The group mined a goth/post-punk sound, but only released one single — “Moya”/”Fatman” — before disbanding. Beggars Banquet released a self-titled compilation in 1983 that collected that single along with radio sessions and live material.

That same year, Astbury and Duffy formed Death Cult, the beginning of their now-decades-long musical collaboration. They released a self-titled EP and a follow-up single, “Gods Zoo,” in 1983 before dropping “Death” and continuing on as The Cult. Those two releases were combined on a single CD in 1988 and, in 1996, that CD was expanded with four tracks from a BBC radio session and retitled Ghost Dance .

Since then, Duffy and Asbury have released 11 albums as The Cult, with breakthrough singles coming in the mid- and late-’80s, including “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Wildflower,” “Love Removal Machine,” “Firewoman” and “Edie (Ciao Baby),” as the band evolved from its goth/post-punk roots into a more hard-rock sound.

The Cult announce 40th anniversary UK tour for winter 2024

The dates conclude with a stop at London’s Royal Albert Hall

The Cult perform live.

The Cult have announced details of a UK tour, which will celebrate their 40th year as a band. Find upcoming dates and ticket details below.

Announced today (April 16), the shows are set for later this year and will see the iconic ‘80s rock group perform in 10 cities across the country. The dates come in celebration of a huge milestone for Ian Astbury and co., as this year marks four decades since the band formed as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.

“Following up from the great energy of Death Cult 8323 shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to Cult 8424,” guitarist Billy Duffy said of the new announcement. “CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”

The shows all take place this winter, and kick off on October 21 with an opening night at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester. This is followed the next night with a gig at Swansea Arena (22), followed by stops in Edinburgh (24), Manchester (25), Bristol (27), York (29) and Newcastle (30).

The final run of the new tour dates will take place in the first week of November; including a slot at Guildhall in Portsmouth on the 1st, and a show at Civic Hall in Wolverhampton the following night. The dates wrap up with a closing show at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London on November 4.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (April 19) at 10am BST. Visit here to get tickets and find a full list of tour dates below.

The dates for 2024 come following a tour the band embarked on last year, celebrating 40 years since their first formation under the name ‘Death Cult’ .

Taking place around the UK, Ireland and the US, the tour was called ‘Death Cult 8323’ and saw Duffy and Astbury return to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career.

The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”

More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .

The on-stage appearance was the latest of the multiple times the two musicians have joined forces, as they both have a long history of playing music together – stemming back to their adolescent years.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

Review & Photography by Manny Manson for MPM

“ Our music is just melodies and guitar, we’re like Big Country and U2….Only Better!” Ian Astbury 1985

The Cult, a British rock band with a penchant for blending post-punk, hard rock, and alternative influences, emerged as a prominent force in the music scene during the 1980s. Formed in 1983 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, the band underwent an initial incarnation as “Death Cult” before shortening their name to The Cult.

Starting out in 1983 as “The Southern Death Cult,” the band consisted of; Ian Astbury (Vocals), Barry Jepson (bass), Haq Nawaz ‘Aky’ Qureshi (Drums) and Dave ‘Buzz’ Burrows (Guitar), the band was soon revitalised after Astbury disbanded the band and reformed it as the “Death Cult,” this time the line up included; Astbury (vocals), Billy Duffy (guitar), Jaime Stewart (bass) and Raymond ‘Ray Mondo’ Taylor Smith (drums). This line up continued until another change was made in1994.

From this point, core of The Cult consists of just two founding members, Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar). Their musical collaboration, rooted in their shared passion for rock and roll and a mystic aesthetic, laid the foundation for the band’s distinctive sound.

The Cult’s early success came with their third album, “Love” (1985), which featured hits like “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Rain.” These tracks showcased the band’s ability to marry Ian Astbury’s soulful and charismatic vocals with Billy Duffy’s iconic guitar riffs, creating a sound that resonated with both mainstream and alternative audiences.

The band’s exploration of various genres and willingness to evolve their sound marked their career. The 1987 album “Electric” took a more hard rock-oriented approach, featuring tracks like “Love Removal Machine,” while the move to America and the collaboration with the infamous ‘Bob Rock’ who engineered, “Sonic Temple” (1989) solidified their status with hits like “Fire Woman” and “Edie (Ciao Baby).”

The early ‘90s saw The Cult continue to experiment with their sound, incorporating elements of alternative and grunge music. The album “Ceremony” (1991) showcased this evolution, featuring tracks like “Wild Hearted Son.” However, by the mid-’90s, the band took a hiatus.

The Cult reunited in 1999, and another album quickly followed, releasing “Beyond Good and Evil” (2001), sadly, another brief hiatus followed , this time from 2002 until 2006, since reforming they have gone on to release four more albums, “Born Into This” (2007), “Choice of Weapon” (2012), “Hidden City” (2016) and “The Midnight Sun” (2022) and in doing so, thereby demonstrating their enduring relevance and commitment to evolving their musical identity.

In addition to their success in the studio, The Cult has built a reputation for powerful and dynamic live performances. Ian Astbury’s enigmatic stage presence and Billy Duffy’s masterful guitar work have made their concerts memorable experiences for fans worldwide.

The band’s song writing often explores themes of spirituality, love, and societal issues, with Ian Astbury’s lyrics contributing a poetic and reflective element to their music. His respect for the Native American people is evident in the band’s early works.

The Cult’s influence on the rock genre extends beyond their chart-topping hits; they are regarded as trailblazers who have seamlessly bridged the gap between alternative and hard rock. With a career now spanning four decades and a catalogue of critically acclaimed albums, The Cult remains a driving force in the evolution of rock music.

Their latest tour sees them reverting back to using their earlier, ‘Death Cult’, name, their tour poster featuring the words “The CULT presents DEATH CULT 8323”, (1983 – 2023, it’s a ‘40 th Anniversary tour,’), kicking off in Belfast on November 6 th , it then continues for 12 nights, climaxing at the Brixton Electric in London for two nights, 20-21 Nov.

Up first is “LiLi Refrain,” a musician based in Rome, Italy. She uses guitar, drums, vocals mixed in with synths and loopers to build tracks in real time, full of haunting sounds that have an element of a bygone era about them, she uses her voice as an extra instrument, the lyrics are other worldly and have no semantics. I suppose her attire and face paint help to reinforce that pagan ritualistic image that her music projects. She has been around since 2007 and to date has five studio albums; ‘Lili Refrain’ (2009), “9” (2009), “Kawax” (2013), “ULU” (2020) and “Mana” (2022). She has toured with the mighty Heilung through 2022 into 2023.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

A Lili Refrain live performance is on of being transported to an otherworldly realm, one where the boundaries of reality dissolve, and the audience is transported into a literal sonic dreamscape. A Lili Refrain takes to the stage she is shrouded in an ethereal mist as, adorned with enigmatic face paint, she slowly takes command of her sonic universe.

The journey begins with “Ichor” from the album “Mana,” (2022), a haunting introduction that sets the tone for the surreal experience that is about to unfold. Lili Refrain’s mastery of the looping pedal becomes immediately apparent, as layers of sound weave together, creating a mesmerizing tapestry.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

As “Sangoma” ( Mana 2022), reverberates through the venue, the crowd is left in a state of bewilderment. Lili’s use of vocal sounds, devoid of traditional words, adds a strange, otherworldly but captivating dimension to the performance. The looping pedal becomes her sorcery, conjuring sonic spells that enrapture the audience in a trance.

“Mami Wata,” another enchanting composition from the album “Mana,” further deepens the sonic journey. The looping pedal becomes a portal through which Lili summons spectral melodies, each layer building upon the last, creating a sonic cathedral that resonates with the audience’s collective soul.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

“Terra 2.0” (ULU 2020), unfolds like a cosmic ballet, with Lili Refrain manipulating time and space through her intricate loops. The crowd, now fully immersed in the surreal soundscape, responds with a mix of awe and reverence, unsure whether they are witnessing a performance or a mystical ritual.

The enigmatic journey continues with a rendition of “Nature Boy,” a track that transcends its earthly origins, from the earlier album “Kawax (2013)”. Lili’s vocal sounds, intertwined with the other instruments and looping pedal, create an otherworldly choir that seems to echo from distant galaxies. The crowd, caught in the sonic embrace, is transported to a dimension where the boundaries between artist and audience blur.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

As the set draws to a close, Lili Refrain unleashes the sonic culmination of the evening, “Earthling.” (Mana 2022), The looping pedal becomes a conduit for her cosmic energies, and the crowd is left spellbound by the sonic alchemy taking place before them. Lili’s face paint seems to glow with an unearthly light as she orchestrates the final crescendo.

The set concludes, leaving the audience in a state of transcendence. Lili Refrain’s ethereal performance, marked by haunting sounds, both instrumental and vocal, and the mystical use of looping, has not just entertained but has transported the crowd to a place where the boundaries of reality are beautifully and bizarrely blurred. A stunning warm up set for tonight’s headliners. With Astbury’s love of the native American, Canadian cultures its obvious why Lili Refrain was chosen.

As the crew yet again, swiftly clear the stage, the buzz from the crowd has started to grow, fans are hurriedly trying to get a drink from the bar, deep with fans trying to do the same before the main act hits the stage.

On time in a smoke-filled Rock City, The Cult take the stage with an electrifying energy that sets the night ablaze. The air, thick with anticipation as the first chords of “83rd Dream” (Dreamtime 1984), resonated through the venue, signalling the beginning of a musical journey. The crowd drinks or not are on their toes, this is what they have come for, this is what they want, Astbury, Duffy, Tempesta and Jones… LIVE!

the cult tour 2023 ireland

“Christians” (Brothers Grimm EP 1983), follows on, shaking the crowd to their core with its raw power. The ever-present smoke adding a mysterious ambiance, enhancing the visual experience. Ian Astbury’s voice cut through the haze, captivating the audience with each lyric. Billy Duffy’s guitar riffs wove seamlessly with Astbury’s vocals, creating a sonic tapestry that filled the venue.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

As “Gods Zoo” (1983, later released on the Ghostdance EP ), and “Brothers Grimm” (1983 EP), reverberated through Rock City, the atmosphere intensifies. The crowd, immersed in the sonic waves, responded with fervent cheers and enthusiastic applause after each song. Astbury’s enigmatic stage presence and Duffy’s masterful guitar work fuel the connection between band and audience.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

The tribal beats of “Ghost Dance” (1983 EP), resonated, invoking a collective rhythmic response from the crowd. The Cult cover, “Butterflies” ( Dreamtime 1984) is up next along with the reworked “A Flower In The Desert,” formally a Death Cult song from 1983 called ‘Flowers In The Forest’, showcasing the band’s versatility, drawing the audience into a trance-like state. “Resurrection Joe” (Dreamtime 1984), and “Horse Nation” (1983 EP) stirred the energy, amplifying the fervour within the venue to new heights.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

“Go West (Crazy Spinning Circles)”( Dreamtime 1984), and “Hollow Man”(Love 1985), continue to build the momentum, setting the stage for a climactic moment. The atmosphere nearly reaching its peak during “Dreamtime,” (Dreamtime 1984), with the crowd collectively surrendering to the hypnotic rhythm. Astbury and Duffy’s onstage chemistry was obvious, creating a collaboration that elevated the performance to a spectacle for the hungry fans .

the cult tour 2023 ireland

“Spiritwalker” (Dreamtime 1984), resonates with the crowd, leading into the set closer, “Rain.” (Love 1985). The haunting melody filling the air, and the venue, as one erupts as The Cult exit the stage, leaving the audience hungry for more.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

The encore begins with “Moya,” released in 1982 on a 12 inch which also included “Fatman” and “The Girl.” It would later appear on a compilation album released in 1983 called “the Southern Death Cult”. This surprise inclusion thrilled long-time fans, and its pulsating beats marked a high point in the show. The climax of the night arrived with the legendary “She Sells Sanctuary,” (Love 1085). Duffy’s iconic guitar riff echoing through Rock City, igniting a frenzied response from the crowd. Astbury’s vocals soared, and the synergy between the band and the audience reached a fever pitch.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

As the final notes of “She Sells Sanctuary” faded, the crowd are left on a natural “Gothic” High. The night concluded with The Cult delivering what is arguably their best-known song, from the album “Love,” leaving the fans in Rock City bathed in the afterglow of a spiritual performance, the collective buzz leaving the venue is one of euphoria, and nostalgia as the Death Cult have reminded their partisan following, just how damn good their live shows are.

the cult tour 2023 ireland

I first saw The Cult in the early 80’s in Leicester’s, DeMontfort Hall, on the “Love” tour. It was a simple stripped back set from memory, but it has remained in my top three gigs of all time. I often refer to it even today, tonight has cemented that memory even more.

As we step out into the cold November night the evening still reverberating in our ears, we happily go about our way home, with a smile and a whispered song on our lips.. Yes, another great school night away from homework ..

In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Antenne , Astbury was full of praise for THE CULT 's latest album, "Under The Midnight Sun" , calling it "essential." He clarified: "If you're a fan of rock music, our new record's essential… I don't think there's any recent releases of rock music that come close to 'Under The Midnight Sun' . And to say that, it may sound like an arrogant statement, but I'm tired of this bullshit. Stop it. Stop phoning it in. Stop exploiting your fans. Stop patronizing your fans. And stop calling them fans. They're your benefactors. Our audience are our benefactors."

Astbury continued: "I have such incredible gratitude and respect to people who would actually pay their hard-earned money to walk through a door, buy a record, come to a show, buy a t-shirt. Are you kidding? I was one; I am one. I appreciate that. I appreciate them. And that's why we made this record, because we wanted it to be the best of the best of the best. It's a gift. Yeah, you've gotta pay for it. But I'm sorry, that's… it's society."

"Under The Midnight Sun" arrived in October via Black Hill Records . The LP was produced by Tom Dalgety ( PIXIES , GHOST , ROYAL BLOOD ). Dalgety is the first British producer THE CULT has worked with since its second album, "Love" (1985).

Astbury previously spoke highly of "Under The Midnight Sun" last July in an interview with Dayton Daily News . At the time, he said: "It is a different animal. It destroys 'Hidden City' and anything else we've done in quite a while. We dug deep and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this record.

"It's a brave new world out there and we want to be a part of it, but you don't get to be a part of it unless you're doing your best work," he added. "There are no free passes for anyone. You're only as good as what's happening today."

In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Daily News , Astbury stated about "Under The Midnight Sun" : "This new album is a really honest, authentic depiction of where we are today. It's a very focused record and it's layered, it's dense, it's celebratory and it gets dark. There's a lot in this record. It's an amalgamation of THE CULT 's major influences, the DNA of the band all culminating in a very special moment."

Born out of the ashes of the U.K. post-punk scene, THE CULT evolved to become one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining arenas and stadiums around the world, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music and art, and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status. THE CULT , whose music transformed from punk rock to post-punk, psychedelia, heavy dance music and transcendental hard rock, became one of the handful of important bands in the U.S. post-modern and hard rock communities, and was embraced by a generation that was waking up to the influence of 1960s and 1970s rock icons like LED ZEPPELIN , THE NEW YORK DOLLS and David Bowie .

The constant core of THE CULT is the "head and heart" of the band, Astbury and guitarist/composer Billy Duffy . Attitude incarnate, the chemistry between these two vastly different artists — equal parts genuine affection and palpable tension — remains the source of their long-standing partnership. Duffy grounds Astbury 's esoteric side with a hard rock perspective, and there is no doubt that at all times, these two have each other's back. THE CULT 's current lineup also includes former WHITE ZOMBIE , EXODUS and TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta .
