How to Travel From Montreal to Quebec City by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

Montreal is Quebec's most populous city, the financial center, and a thriving multicultural hub of activity. Quebec City, situated 158 miles (255 kilometers) up the Saint Lawrence River, is a unique and historic city as well as the provincial capital. Canada does not have high-speed trains, so whether you drive, use a bus, or take the train, it will take you about three hours to travel between Montreal and Quebec City.

If you are traveling during the busy holiday season, taking the train may be faster than driving or taking the bus because at least you won't get stuck in traffic. If you're in a rush, it's a 45-minute flight between the cities, but you should also factor in how much time it will take you to get to and from the airport. If saving money is your priority, the bus is the best choice.

Ultimately, deciding which way to get from Montreal to Quebec City comes down to two factors: price and travel style.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Montreal to Quebec City?

For the cheapest transport, taking a bus is the best option, but only if you book tickets early. Orléans Express  is the only bus company that operates regular service between Montreal and Quebec City, with one or two stops in between. If you buy your tickets early enough, the promotional price is just $25. However, these tickets quickly sell out and you may have to pay the full fare, which is about $56.

Buses leave about once an hour from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and feature reclining seats, free Wi-Fi, an onboard bathroom, and electrical outlets. Accounting for traffic, you should expect the ride to take between three to four hours. For the best prices, Orléans Express recommends booking your ticket at least eight days in advance.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Montreal to Quebec City?

Flying is the fastest way to get to Quebec City. The flight is only 45 minutes, so it's ideal for travelers who are on a tight schedule. However, once you factor in all of the additional time to get to and from the airport and navigate security, the time difference between flying and driving may not be that significant.

Air Canada , PAL Airlines , and regional airline Pascan , all operate direct flights between Montreal and Quebec City. One-way flights typically start around $90 but prices can skyrockets if you don't book well in advance, or book with a smaller air carrier. You're more likely to find lower fares if you book at least a month or two in advance.

Most flights leave from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport , which is about a 30-minute drive or a 40-minute train ride from the Montreal Bus Terminal. However, Pascan flights are non-commercial 15-passenger planes that leave from the much smaller Saint-Hubert Longueuil Airport, so make sure you pay attention to which airport you're leaving from when buying your tickets. Tickets purchased through Pascan also tend to be more expensive than those bought with Air Canada or PAL

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

There are two main options for driving between Montreal and Quebec City, both of which take about three hours.

The slightly quicker route is along Highway 20 on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River; however, this route is dull and lacking charm. One advantage of taking this route is the authentic poutine at Fromagerie Lemaire just outside of Drummondville. Being a cheese-making operation, the cheese curds are homemade and the french fries, of course, are fresh cut.

The north shore route along Highway 40 is slightly more scenic , as it runs closer to the river shore and has more small towns with pretty double-spired churches. Trois-Rivieres, about halfway between Montreal and Quebec City, makes a pleasant stop on the north shore.

Be aware that driving in Quebec in winter can be challenging, especially for inexperienced drivers. Snow tires are mandatory in Quebec for a reason, so educate yourself on proper winter driving and make sure you're familiar with the rules of the road of driving in Canada .

How Long Is the Train Ride?

VIA Rail is Canada's national passenger railway and provides daily service between downtown Montreal and Quebec City. Depending on how many stops there are on your itinerary, the journey should only take between three and four hours. And while the train ride is not particularly scenic, it is comfortable, reliable, and convenient.

VIA Rail offers five different ticket classes : Escape, Economy, Economy Plus, Business, and Business Plus. Escape fares are the cheapest because they are non-refundable, while Business and Business Plus fares are refundable and include complimentary meals, lounge access, and priority boarding. No matter which fare you choose, you will be able to access and use the train's complimentary Wi-Fi.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Quebec City?

Since winter is brutally cold, the best time to visit Quebec City is in the summer. The weather is warm but rarely uncomfortably hot, and the locals take full advantage of the sunshine by hosting back-to-back festivals all season long. Of course, summer is also the tourist high season, and transportation methods all go up in price (along with hotels). Aim for visiting in May or early June to balance out good weather with fewer crowds.

If you can withstand the freezing temperatures, winter in Quebec City offers its own special charm. The nearby mountains are open for skiing and the February Winter Carnival is one of the biggest annual events in the city.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

The Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport is 9 miles (15 kilometers) from downtown Quebec City, which is about a 25-minute drive. Unlike Montreal, there's no train service from the airport so your only public transportation option is to take the bus, which will most likely require at least one transfer and will take you over an hour. Compared to other city airports, Quebec City's Airport is not too far out of the way and it's probably worth it to take a cab or ride-share to your hotel.

What Is There to Do in Quebec City?

With cobblestone streets, fortified walls, and castles, Quebec City is probably North America's most European city. The historic district has even been declared UNESCO World Heritage site and is the third oldest city on the continent.

The city's main tourist attractions are La Citadelle de Québec, the Parliament building, and Montmorency Falls, just outside of downtown. For the best view of the city skyline, head to Pierre-Dugua-De-Mons Terrace. There are also a number of museums worth visiting such as the Museum of Civilization , the Érico Chocolate Museum , and more.

A guided tour may be a good idea if you want to make the most of your trip and learn as much as you can. The Quebec City and Montmorency Falls daytrip from Montreal is a full-day sightseeing tour with a local licensed guide, highlighting Quebec City's top attractions.

Another option that allows more time in Quebec City is a two-day guided tour of Quebec City and Tadoussac, leaving from Montreal. Get a guided tour of historic Quebec City plus time to spend on your own. ​ After the scenic drive to Tadoussac, hop on board a whale watching vessel, and keep an eye out for the belugas, minkes, and humpbacks that dwell in the St. Lawrence waters.

Montreal and Quebec City are the two biggest cities in Quebec, with beautiful old towns, rich history and fun things to do, and are both highly worth visiting. This Montreal and Quebec City itinerary will help you see all of the key sights and not miss anything.

Montreal and Quebec City are very different from each other , and from the rest of Canada, which makes visiting them both interesting places to visit. They have great food, scenic beauty, and heritage buildings that date back 100s of years.

As an Ontarian, I’ve been to Quebec countless times and I adore both places- especially Quebec City, because of how different it is from anywhere else in North America.

You will need at least 5 days to see both Montreal and Quebec City (two days in each, plus one in between.) However, an extra day in either city would be beneficial and I’ll provide options for a 3rd day in case you have more time.

So, let’s jump into your Montreal + Quebec City itinerary below!

What you Need to Know about this Itinerary

✅   It starts in Montreal, and ends in Quebec City, but you could easily do it the other way around

✅   It can be done with or without a car. A car is helpful in both cities, but they are also both doable via public transit. I’ll provide options for both

✅   It can be done with all age groups. I specialize in family travel, but I’ll also be providing some add-ons for those looking for a little extra adventure.

2-Days in Montreal (+ Optional 3rd Day)

Day 1 in Montreal

1. explore old montreal.

Time needed: 2 hours +

Today will be a fun morning of walking around Old Montreal, exploring the heritage buildings, and Montreal’s incredible history.

Start your walk around Victoria Square (shown on the map below.)

From Victoria square, walk north on Saint-Paul Street (Rue St. Paul) which is the most famous street in Montreal. In the old days, it used to be the ‘main’ street in town. It’s lined with boutique stores, cafes and eateries.

I recommend starting south on Rue St. Paul and work your way north, so that at the end you can turn onto a street to bring you to the Notre Dame de Basilica de Montreal.

I highly recommend going inside the Notre Dame de Basilica (its open every morning from 9am.) The inside is really beautiful.

After the church, continue heading north towards Place Jacques Cartier.

After spending some time at the Place Jacques Cartier, walk towards Saint Laurent Boulevard which is a short walk from the square. On the way, you will pass the Montreal City Hall, a heritage building that you can take a photo of.

Saint Laurent Boulevard is a trendy, fashion area with a lot of colourful street art. Walk down the street, window shopping and consider what your plans for lunch are.

Another optional activity in this Old Montreal area along the river is to ride the Grand Roue de Montreal. The ferris wheel is a short, 5 minute walk from the Notre Dame Basilica. It’s the tallest ferris wheel in Canada at 196 feet or 60 metres, and a great way to get views of the river and the city from a bird’s eye view. 2. Choice between Montreal Food Tour or Lunch in Old Town

Later in the morning or early afternoon, you’ll probably be getting hungry. I recommend choosing between doing a Montreal Food Tour, or grabbing lunch at a restaurant in Old Town.

Here’s more about each option:

Option #1: Montreal Food Tour

Time needed: 3 hours (offered hourly between 11am and 3pm)

Montreal is the foodie capital of Canada , so if you only do one food tour during this trip, it should be here. Montreal bagels are a staple, as well as poutine and Italian-inspired eats.

What I like about this tour is that they tell you in advance what you can expect to eat, plus there’s one ‘surprise dish.’ All ages are welcome.

If you want to do this tour, you’ll have to make your way over to the meeting point which is at 5170 Boulevard Saint-Laurent, Montréal. This is just further down the street where you ended off, but still another 30-minute walk.

You could walk there in 30 minutes if you’re up to it, or get there by taking the metro to the Saint-Laurent / Fairmount station (from there its a less than 2 minute walk.)

Side note: I recommend making your way over to Boulevard Saint Laurent sometime during your stay in Montreal regardless, because it has beautiful and colourful street murals in the summertime which are worth seeing.

Option # 2: Lunch on Saint Laurent Boulevard

Time needed: It depends

If you decide that a food tour isn’t really your thing, then you have your pick of a variety of restaurants in Old Town. There are too many to name , the area is literally lined with great places to eat.

A few of my personal favourites are:

• SHAKER Cuisine & Mixologie St-Laurent (the food here is really different and unique, but still of the ‘comfort food’ variety) Menu here
• Restaurant Mechant Boeuf (means “mean steak” in English.) It’s a steakhouse, but it has vegetarian options too. See lunch menu here

3. Get views of Montreal from the top of Mont Royal

Time needed: Anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours (depending on how you get up there, and how long you stay)

In the afternoon of day 1 in Montreal, you’re going to head up to Mont Royal to get a view of the city skyline. It’s a spectacular thing to see in all seasons.

Option # 1: Climb to the top

There are a few different paths to get to the top.

If you want as easy of a hike as possible, then this one is an easy option, at about 4 km/2.4 miles, and takes around 30 minutes if you take the easiest route. It’s a moderate hike, but the path is wide and mostly smooth; some paved and some dirt trail.

If you want a more challenging hike, then you will see other trail options – they’re all well marked and you’ll be able to choose the one for you.

Option # 2: Take a bus

The most common bus that people take to the top of Mont Royal is 11 Parc-du Mont-Royal / Ridgewood .

Option # 2: Drive

If you have a car, then driving up Mont Royal is an option. At peak times, it can be hard to get a parking place,

Regardless of how you choose to get to the top of Mont Royal, you will find a large viewing platform at the top and likely, several other tourists enjoying the views.

4. Evening in Montreal

You may be looking for some things to do in the evening in Montreal either today, or tomorrow (or both!) Here are some ideas:

• Ride the large ferris wheel on the harbour, if you didn’t do so already
• Visit the Underground City
• Visit La Ronde Amusement Park  on Helen’s Island (summer only)

Day 2 in Montreal:

1. head to the montreal biosphere.

It was hard to narrow down the best things to do in Montreal into two days, but the Montreal Biosphere was high on the priority list and the first thing I’d recommend doing on the morning of your second day.

It’s the largest in the world of its kind, at 249 ft in diameter and 203 ft high. It’s located on the island, so you can also get views of downtown Montréal from the other side of the river.

You can buy your tickets to the Biosphere in advance on their website here. You’ll also notice that there are a few other science museums; a planetarium, and insectarium and others. (Might be some ideas for a 3rd day in Montreal.)

You can either drive, or take transit to the Biosphere. They have a couple parking lots nearby, and you can also take public transit (take the subway to Jean-Drapeau station and the biosphere is just a short walk from there.

The biosphere is very cool to look at from the outside, but the inside is also an environmental science museum. Give yourself at least an hour, to 90 minutes to see the whole thing.

After that, it will be time to make your way back to mainland Montreal.

2. Head to Petite Italie (Little Italy)

The next stop on your second day is Little Italy. Head back to mainland Montreal via the bridge or the subway.

Either drive, bike, or take the subway to Jean-Talon or De Castelnau station. You will now be in the Little Italy area, which is a huge foodie neighbourhood.

3. Pop into the Jean-Talon Market

The Jean Talon is a famous historic market (and these days to be honest, – more of a tourist attraction than market) located in Little Italy.

It’s named after Jean Talon, a French settler from the 1600s who wanted to bring migrants to the area.

The other great thing about the Jean-Talon Market is that it’s in the centre of Little Italy (Petite Italy), and its open 7 days a week, year round. It’s become a popular attrction for a reason, so I recommend checking it out.

There are some food items in the market, and tons of restaurants in the area. There isn’t just Italian food – you can find Vietnamese, and many other ethnic foods. I recommend grabbing something to eat here.

3. Make your way over to Montreal Olympic Park

Take the metro to Pie-IX station (The ride from Little Italy will take approximately 40-45 minutes.)

There is so much to see and do in this little corner of Montreal, including:

• The Montreal Tower
• The Montreal Biodome
• The insectarium and the planetarium

There are parks, trails, and ponds. If you want to be outside and enjoy the views, you could simply walk around, soaking up the nature.

If you want to do another museum, then I’d highly recommend one of them if you haven’t had too much science for one day. (You can buy tickets from the same website where you bought the Biosphere tickets.)

Otherwise, you could visit the Montreal Olympic Park. At the time of writing, guided tours are closed. But, you can still visit – and even climb the tower (pictured above) to get a cool view from the top of the surrounding area!

(Optional) 3rd Day in Montreal

• Great museums: When you only have two days, its hard to prioritize a museum because then you don’t really see the city. But if you have a third day in Montreal (or if it rains on one of the first two days) then check out one of Montreal’s amazing museums.
• Canada’s largest cemetery . I know it sounds a bit sinister to check out a cemetery while you’re on vacation, but this cemetery is a popular tourist attraction and one of the most unique things to see in Montreal. Read about visiting here .
• Botanical Gardens (since the Botanical Gardens is located further north, you could also visit it on the way to Montreal, or out of Montreal on your way to Quebec City.)

Shoulder Day: Travelling from Montreal to Quebec City (or vice versa)

Quebec City and Montreal are roughly 255 km (158 miles) from each other

If you’re driving between Montreal and Quebec City

It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from one to the other, but there are two different routes you can take:

• The Trans Canada highway – Mostly boring, but faster. there are some great poutine places you can stop at along the way.
• The 40 highway – more scenic, but about 15-20 minutes slower. You can stop in Trois-Rivières, which is a nice little city

Public transit options between Montreal and Quebec City

If you’re not using a car, then your public transit options are:

• Taking the Via Rail train . You can choose between economy and business class. An economy train ticket from Montreal to Quebec City costs between $42 and $61 one-way, whereas a business class ticket is between $100-$200. Prices go up closer to your date of travel, so book soon on the ViaRail website.
• Take the bus with Orleans Express. It takes around 3.5 hours, and tickets are similar to the train. You can book your trip online

Pro Tip: Personally, I would go with the train. Via Rail has been around for a long time, and I’ve used it many times and never had a bad experience. It’s also quicker than the bus, for roughly the same price.

2 Days in Quebec City (+ Optional 3rd Day)

Where to Stay in Quebec City

• Budget: Auberge International de Quebec  A hostel in Old town, with dorms and private rooms
• Mid-Range: Addresse sur Grande-Allee Lofts . Comfortable Victorian building, just a short walk from Old Town, near the St. Louis gate
• Luxury: Chateau Frontenac , A beautiful castle hotel overlooking Old Town and the St. Lawrence River

Evening in Quebec City (on the day you arrive)

Depending on what time you get to Quebec City, you might have a few hours in the evening to do something before going to bed.

Here are some evening options in Quebec City:

• Simply explore lower Old Town by evening; the old buildings are still charming by night. (You can also take the funicular, which is open until 11pm)
• Do a Quebec City Ghost Walk
• Head to the Grande Allée (which is like Paris’s Champs Elysees in Quebec) for some bar food and a drink

Day 1 in Quebec City

The Old Town of Quebec City is sort of divided into two parts – the upper part, and the lower part (you need to take stairs, or the funicular to get down to the lower part.)

Overall, you could spend hours walking around both parts of Old Town. You can do it self-guided, but if you’re a history buff, you might want to do a tour with a local guide (offered daily, between 9:30 and 3:30pm) that can teach you about the history of Canada’s oldest settlement, which goes back to the 1600s.

If you don’t want to book a walking tour, then read below on how to explore Old Town on your own.

1. Walk through Upper Old Town

Upper Old Town of Quebec City has charming streets to stroll through. There is great shopping, some medieval buildings, and great restaurants. (If you want to grab breakfast here there are some great places to do it – I recommend Cochon Dingue, or )

Here are the things to check out in Upper Old Town:

• Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec – the oldest stone church in Canada, built in the 1600s. I recommend going inside, its so beautiful. Doors are open from 7:30am to 4pm daily.
• The Chateau Frontenac (get lots of photos in front of it!)
• Dufferin Terrace which is the boardwalk in front of the Chateau Frontenac. From there, you can get views of the St. Lawrence River, and Levis on the other side of the river

2. Take the funicular down to Lower Old Town

You’ll find the funicular on Dufferin Terrace, right in front of Chateau Frontenac. It costs $5 cash to take the funicular to Lower Old Town.

No need to reserve the funicular – simply show up. Sometimes there’s a small line up, but it goes pretty fast as they can fit many people inside each vehicle.

You can also walk to the lower part of Old Town via a staircase, but you should take the funicular at least once for the experience.

It’s a quick, 2 minute ride, but you’re riding in a 120 year old structure.

3. Explore Lower Old Town

Time needed: around an hour

After you get out of the funicular, you’ll be in the lower part of Old Town.

When you first get off the funicular, you will be facing Rue Petit

The things to make sure you see in the lower part of Old Town are:

• Rue Petit Champlain
• Place Royale.
• Umbrella Alley (pictured above)

2. Have lunch

you may be ready for lunch, or dejeuner, as the French would call it. Since you’re down in Old Town, it makes most sense to grab something here.

On Rue Petit Champlain, you will find a Lapin Sauté, a café and an Italian place. There are more restaurants along Umbrella Alley. Most of the options are Quebecois food.

Pro Tip: Most restaurants in Quebec City take online reservations. I’d recommend this if you want to ensure you get to eat somewhere very specific. If you’re visiting in summer, you could also delay lunch and eat on the boat cruise (info below) instead

2. Take a boat cruise

Time needed: 90 minutes

If you’re in Quebec City in summer , then there are boat cruises in the St. Lawrence River.

You can get to the port pretty easily from the Lower part of Old town.

The cruises are 90 minutes and show you the Quebec City skyline, Montmorency Falls, and Ile d’Orléans.

You can choose between 2pm or 4pm. Pick whichever works best. If you’re a morning person, you may have seen all of old town and had lunch by 2pm. But if not – it might be closer to 4 by the time you’re ready for the cruise.

Check availability for the cruises here. Try to book in advance if your visit is in summer, as they do fill up.

There is a bistro menu on board that you can order lunch from (if you’d rather eat on the boat than in Old Town.)

If the cruises aren’t running

If you’re visiting Quebec City in winter, then the boat cruises won’t be running anymore, but you can take the ferry to Levis instead of a boat cruise. (In fact, you may choose the ferry regardless of the season.)

The ferry is cheap, and fast – it only costs $12 per person, and takes 10 minutes to reach Levis, on the other side of the river. So, if you’re not wild about being in a boat, then I’d recommend this option.

Ferries to Levis can be booked online, or on the spot. They leave every 12 minutes throughout the day.

After taking the ferry to Levis, you can explore the area for a little bit (which I’d recommend doing in the warmer months) but you can also just take hop directly heading on the ferry going straight back to Quebec City.

Many people do this, including us (when we visited in winter) because they just want to see the Quebec City skyline.

3. Getting dinner in Quebec

You may want to start thinking about some places to grab dinner. Quebec City is full of restaurants – there are more options in Upper Town than Lower town, simply because its bigger.

5. Evening activities in Quebec City

Before or after dinner, you may have energy for an evening activity before retiring back to your accommodation. Here are some ideas:

• Head to the Grande Allée, a large street in Upper Old Town, where there are lots of pubs, restaurants, live music and nightclubs.

Day 2 in Quebec City

1. spend the morning at montmorency falls.

After grabbing breakfast near your accommodation, make your way to Parc Montmorency, where you can see the beautiful Montmorency Falls.

If you drive, it will only take 15 minutes, and you should book your daily access in advance here . (You can choose parking only, or packages that include other things.)

But there are several other ways to get to Montmorency Falls:

• Taking an Uber
• Taking the bus
• Booking this tour (which will take you to Montmorency Falls and St. Anne de Beaupré cathedral)

Visiting Montmorency Falls will be a half-day affair. There is a lot to explore at Parc Montmorency, as its called.

There is a bridge that walks over the bridge, and various lookout points where you can get different lookouts of the falls. In the summer, there’s a tall staircase that can take you all the way down to the base of the falls.

Pro Tip: In the winter, many of the trails and lookouts are closed off, but you can still visit it.

In the summer, there’s a gondola you can ride from the bottom area back up to the top (which is what we did once when we visited in the summer)

2. Lunch at Manoir de Fontaine (optional)

While you’re at Montmorency Falls, I recommend going inside the Manoir de Fountain. They have a cute gift shop where you can find some Quebecois souvenirs.

You can also eat lunch at the Manoir. I ate there once and enjoyed it, the food is fresh and good. But, the menu is pretty limited if I’m honest – you can check it out, and book online here .

If you’re not wild about eating at the Manoir, then you can also wait until you’re back to Quebec City for more options.

If you have a car (and if you don’t eat lunch at the Manoir) then of course there are still plenty of options in Quebec City.

If you haven’t had a crepe yet, I recommend it – they’re great for lunch or dinner. My favourite creperie in Quebec City is Le Billig Creperie (in Upper Old Town) but there are many others.

4. Afternoon in Quebec – 2 options

Option # 1 musee de beaux arts & cartier avenue.

I recommend visiting the Musée de Beaux Arts, because you can see Quebec and indigenous art that is local to the area.

Musée de Beaux Arts a beautiful museum, and you could spend a couple hours wandering around. Visiting is also a bit of an ‘off the beaten path’ activity, since its about a 30 minute walk from lower Old Town.

We didn’t mind the walk at all (we even walked with our two kids) but if you don’t feel up to a walk at this time, then I’d recommend option # 2 instead.

The Musée de Beaux Arts has an amazing gift shop – we spent more money there than any other gift shop in Quebec. Great place to find Quebec and Canadian souvenirs.

If you do head up to Musée de Beaux Arts, then I recommend taking a walk down Cartier avenue afterwards. It’s famous for its colourful lamp streetlights, which have been designed with art by Quebecois artists!

There are many restaurants where you could grab dinner. One of my favourites in this area is Chez Victor Burger -they have a variety of burgers, and poutines.

Option # 2: Tour the Citadelle

If you’re a history buff, then the Citadelle is fascinating. You get to explore the fortress that was built to protect Canada from an American invasion.

The only way to visit the Citadelle is to do a 1-hour guided tour, and there’s a museum you can visit self-guided after. Book your tour online

Optional 3rd day in Quebec City

You have done all the ‘musts.’ If you have time for a 3rd day in Quebec City, I do highly recommend it because there are so many things to do, depending on what you’re most interested in.

Here are the options for what to do on a 3rd day in Quebec City. (You could probably fit in 2 of these activities into one day.)

• Ile d’Orleans wine tour – great for foodies, and people who want a relaxing experience on a romantic holiday. Check availability here .
• Explore Levis, if you didn’t take the ferry the other day and did a boat cruise instead. Then, on a 3rd day I would take the ferry over and explore a bit more. See things to see and do in Levis here. Book walking tour here , or see the ideas
• Aquarium du Quebec – Quebec City’s Aquarium , its a large and impressive aquarium that has both outdoor and indoor enclosures. There are polar bears! Perfect for if you’re in Quebec City with kids ; our kids loved the Quebec Aquarium

Montreal is only about 255 km (160 miles) away from Quebec City, making it one of the easier trips to make from Montreal . But because they’re so close, there are also a lot of options for travelling between both cities.

You can drive, take the bus, the train, or even fly from Montreal to Quebec City. At one point it was even possible to take a boat down the St. Lawrence from Montreal to Quebec City!

But with so many options, how do you know which one is the best for your trip? I’ll go in depth about each mode of transportation between Montreal and Quebec City. At the end of the day, it tends to come down to a question of flexibility vs. budget .

How To Get From Montreal To Quebec City: A Comparison

How To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

Driving from Montreal to Quebec City is the cheapest and most flexible option . This is especially true if you already have a car .

Total drive time between both cities is about 2 hours and 45 minutes … however … it never ends up under 3 hours. So although it seems like the fastest option at first glance, it isn’t actually the case.

There’s always traffic somewhere between Montreal and Quebec City… So always expect the drive to take longer than the GPS says.

I’ve started the drive midweek, on the weekends, at all hours of the day and there’s always traffic somewhere. I guess I haven’t tried leaving in the middle of the night yet!

But if you drive to Quebec City, you will have full flexibility on when you want to leave. And you’ll have your car when you’re in Quebec City. So depending on what you’re planning on doing in Quebec City, having a car once you’re there may be more or less important to you.

On the negative side of driving to Quebec City, it is the most tiring (and potentially most stressful) model of transportation (for the driver anyway!). They obviously cannot just fall asleep for the next three hours.

Don’t Have A Car? Rent A Car In Montreal

If you don’t have a car, you can always rent a car to drive from Montreal to Quebec City. This will make driving a bit less budget friendly, but you will maintain some of that flexibility.

You will have to add in some extra time to get to the car rental to pick up the car.

Dealing With Parking In Quebec City

If you’re driving to Quebec City from Montreal, you’ll need to find parking in Quebec City.

There are quite a few parking lots in Quebec City where you can park a few hours at a time up to an entire month!

For shorter stays, park just outside the Old Town in Stationnement SPAQ – Honore-Mercier / Dauphine . It’s an underground parking lot in Place D’Youville. You’ll be very centrally located here!

If you’re planning on a longer stay in Quebec City, a more affordable option is to park a bit further from Old Town. We found long term parking at the Dorchester Parking Lot in the St. Roch.

Dorchester Parking is a large outdoor lot (which I prefer over the indoor parking garages, although indoor is always nice in the winter!), but it’s about a 20 minute walk from Old Town. We were easily able to come and go and there were always spots. Plus they offer discounts for longer stays .

Routes To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

There are two routes that you can take from Montreal to Quebec City, one on either side of the St. Lawrence River. It’s whether you take highway 40 or highway 20 . 

The route you take will ultimately depend on how much traffic there is on either highway. We always prefer taking highway 40 because it’s just a bit more of an interesting drive.

Although, more often than not, it’s faster to take the 20 . We don’t love driving on the 20 – it’s a 2 lane highway that’s quite straight, flat, and boring. You’ll also have to cross the bridge back over the St. Lawerence to reach Quebec City.

But Do You Actually Need A Car In Quebec City?

Depending on what your plans are in Quebec City, you don’t really need a car once you’re there . If you want to stay within Old Town, then everything you want to see is within walking distance of one another.

Even if you want to explore some of the surrounding neighbourhoods (like St. Roch) they’re easily walkable from Old Town. In fact, we lived in St. Roch and walked everywhere! We would only take our car out on the weekends.

If you want to explore the outskirts of Quebec City (like Montmorency Falls) you still don’t need a car. There are shuttles, and even organized tours (like this one on Viator that takes you to Montmorency Falls , or this one that brings you to Île D’Orleans !).

Although it’s always nice to have a car when you’re exploring a new city, sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle.

Driving Alternative: RideShare To Quebec City From Montreal

Ride sharing is when you get a ride with someone who is already going to Quebec City. There are typically a lot of drivers to choose from as it’s a common route.

It’s a more affordable option, and perhaps offers a bit more flexibility than the next few travel options (like the bus or train).

You won’t be able to rely on a specific schedule, and there’s always a safety (and awkwardness) risk.

There are a few ride sharing websites that you can check, a popular site is Poparide . The cost depends on the driver, but it can start at $30 for one way. I like Poparide because it works like Uber, where the drivers have ratings. 

There is also a new Quebec company for ride sharing within Quebec called Eva . Perhaps it’s a bit more reliable, however it is also more expensive.

Taking The Bus From Montreal To Quebec City 

The bus is a stress free way to get to Quebec City from Montreal. It takes the same amount of time as driving (no surprises there), but now you don’t have the stress of driving . You can sleep the entire way there!

The bus from Montreal to Quebec City is through Orlean Express . There are 12 scheduled departures from Montreal to Quebec City every day of the week. They leave as early as 7:00 A.M. and as late as 9:30 PM.

There are 13 departures from Quebec City to Montreal and leave between 6:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M.

So it’s not too bad for flexibility! You have a lot of departures to choose from.

For cost, it can range between $40 to $65. The price will vary based on time of day, and how far in advance you book. You might be able to score a cheaper ticket – these will be the promo seats .

Don’t forget you do have to add extra travel time to get to the bus station in Montreal and from the bus station in Quebec City…

Getting To & From The Bus Stations?

Thankfully both bus stations are very centrally located in Montreal and Quebec City

In Montreal, it’s at the Gare d’autocars de Montréal on Berri street. This is across the street from Berri-UQAM metro which connects to three metro lines . This makes it very accessible. There are also several bus routes that stop here.

In Quebec City, the bus drops you off at the Bus terminal at the Gare du Palais (the train station). This is only a 15-20 minute walk the centre of Old Town.

Montreal To Quebec City Train Tips

The train is very similar to the bus in several ways. They have the same flexibility in terms of following scheduled departure time. It’s still a very relaxing ride (if not more so on the train!).

The bus and train for the most part take about the same amount of time. Although, the train can vary between 3 hours and 15 minutes and 3 hours and 45 minutes .

The cost can be almost the same as well. In fact, sometimes it might even be cheaper to take the Montreal to Quebec City train . The cheapest seats start at only $42… but it can go all the way up to $220. So there’s quite a big range.

They do however only offer a limited number of seats at their cheapest fare. More likely than not, it will cost you closer to $90 to take the train.

The Montreal to Quebec City train line also has fewer departure times. From Montreal, the train leaves 5 times between 6:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M.

On the weekend, there’s one less departure, so the earliest you can leave is at 9:00 A.M.

The biggest benefit of the train is that you don’t have to worry about longer travel times by getting stuck in traffic. Plus, it will most likely be more comfortable than taking the bus.

The train from Montreal to Quebec City is operated through Via Rail .

Getting To & From The Train Station 

When you take the train from Montreal to Quebec City, you also have to take into account your travel time to get to and from the train stations.

In Montreal, the train station is at Place Bonaventure. This is in the heart of downtown on the orange metro line. But it’s also not too far of a walk from the green line (either Peel or McGill metro stations).

P.S. If you’re flying in to Montreal first though, there is also a train station in Dorval (which is at the airport).

In Quebec City, the trains arrive at the Gare du Palais – which is the same place as where the bus arrives.

From the train station in Quebec City, it’s about a 15 minute walk to the heart of Old Town Quebec.

Flying From Montreal To Quebec City

If you’re really in a time crunch, you might want to consider flying – and yes, there are flights from Montreal to Quebec City.

It’s a bit shocking considering it’s less than three hours to drive. A nonstop flight is under one hour … but of course you have to add a bit more to that itinerary.

First, you have to arrive early to the airport. Because it’s a flight within Canada, it’ recommended to arrive 2 hours before departure. In the past, you only needed to arrive an hour before departure but not anymore. Which brings us right back to the 3 hour travel time . Check updated recommended arrival times.

And that doesn’t even include travel time to and from the airport… which is even longer because neither airport is in the city centre .

Plus, with flying, there are a few more things to consider – like now you have limits on what you can bring . This is probably the most stressful way to get from Montreal to Quebec City.

And let’s not forget about the cost of this flight which will put you out anywhere between $150 to $200 for one way. Or the possibility of cancellations and overbooked flights! Plus, this is the least flexible option with only 4 departure times during the day (through Air Canada).

There were up to 10 departures (all nonstop flights) but they were with smaller airlines (some of which I’ve never heard of!).

How To Get To & From The Airport

Airport transfers in montreal.

The airport in Montreal is in Dorval… in the West Island . That’s about a 30 minute drive from downtown.

You can take a taxi or Uber to the airport. Or there’s a bus (the 747 express) which takes about 45 to 70 minutes from Berri-UQAM metro. It runs 24/7 though.

You can also opt to go to Lionel-Groulx metro station which shortens the ride time to 25 to 35 minutes, but it only runs during peak hours.

Airport Transfers In Quebec City

In Quebec City, you’ll be in a similar boat once you arrive at the airport. It’s about a 30 minute drive to Old Town Quebec.

There are two bus routes that stop at the airport and go to downtown Quebec City – the 76 and 80.

Alternatively, they’ve set up a ride sharing program called Eva that will take you downtown with a trusted service. See an estimate for cost .

A very simple alternative to taking going by yourself to Quebec City from Montreal is to book an organized tour.

Ridesharing is a great way to save money on transportation, whether you’re a passenger or a driver. There are a few rideshare programs to choose from in Quebec.

Amigo Express definitely has the most options as it’s been around for ages, but you’ll be able to use it only if you can read French or use Google Translate, which is the downside.

The Kangaride forum is simple and easy to use, but there is quite a bit of anonymity, so exercise caution. Seats are usually 23 CAD to 30 CAD.

VIA Rail is the only passenger train company travelling between Montreal and Quebec City. Business class has big comfy seats, Wi-Fi, a folding table, outlets, access to a train station lounge, and tasty meals and drinks. Tickets are CAD 131 to CAD 400, depending on the season.

If you’re on a budget, the economy class seats are comfortable, with folding tables, outlets and Wi-Fi. Food and drinks are available for sale, but it’s cheaper to buy them before you board. Tickets are CAD 83 to CAD 200, depending on the season.

Travel time is usually 3 hours and 15 minutes, with five trains daily. In Montreal, the first train leaves at 6:25 am, and the last train is 6:45 pm. In Quebec City, the first train is 5:25 am, and the last train departs at 5:45 pm.

The best time to buy tickets is on Tuesdays, through the VIA Rail website .

Montreal to Quebec City Flights

With a travel time of 45 minutes to 1 hour, flying is one of the fastest ways to get from Montreal to Quebec City. There are a few airlines that service both cities, let us take a quick look at each one.

• Air Canada has eight flights daily between Montreal and Quebec City, four are non-stop. Tickets are rarely less than CAD 275 and can be as high as CAD 600, depending on the season. Travel time is around 1 hour.
• PAL Airlines has two flights daily between Montreal and Quebec City. The average cost for a one-way ticket is CAD 175. The planes are small, with a 76-person capacity. This airline is an Aeroplan affiliate.
• Air Transat is popular for package vacations, but you can also book short-haul flights. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, there is one flight per day from Montreal to Quebec City. Flights can be as low as CAD 150, and travel time is 50 minutes to 1 hour.
• Pascan is a Quebec airline with one daily flight from Mondays to Thursdays. Ticket prices can be as low as CAD 160 and climb to around CAD 560. The planes are small, and you’ll likely travel in a SAAB 340, which has a seating capacity of 33 people. Travel time is about 1 hour. Some flights also leave from the St-Hubert airport on the South Shore of Montreal.

If you're up for a short but stunning trip, crossing between Quebec's two largest cities and passing wildlife parks and stunning nature reserves, then a road trip from Montreal to Quebec City is the perfect journey for you.

The 330km trip from Montreal to Quebec City takes 4 hours to drive. The routes passes Saint Gregoire, Sorel-Tracy, Shawinigan City and Saint-Narcisse, as well as St Lawrence River, Batiscan River Park, Parc De La Peninsule and Batiscan River Park.

While not a huge journey in terms of distance, this trip is full of great scenery and places to visit. Please keep reading until the end to discover our favorite route, places to stay along the way, plus the best times of year to travel.

How far is Quebec City from Montreal and how long will the road trip take?

While you could easily manage this trip in a day, our recommended route takes you along a couple of extra detours on the way, making the actual distance 326km and just over 4 hours of non-stop driving to complete.

Despite the distance being short enough to complete in a day, this epic road trip has plenty of attractions to see on the way that a better move would be to spread it over two to three days, allowing for at least one overnight stop.

Best road trip route from Montreal to Quebec City

The most direct route from Montreal to Quebec City falls in a straight line, as you follow A-20 through a couple of towns. While being a straight forward journey, there aren't as many interesting places to visit en route.

The alternative and slightly longer route only adds an extra 71km to your journey but takes you through the most enjoyable and interesting locations between Montreal and Quebec City.

If you choose to follow the route from the west side of St Lawrence River, you will be able to stop and see a few nature reserves. The east side of the river offers attractions such as beautiful small cities.

Our recommended route covers a bit of both and the added detours allow you to see stunning nature reserves, pretty towns and fascinating cities along the way.

Road trip route from Montreal to Quebec City

Begin by taking Quebec Autoroute 10 across the St Lawrence River to Brossard, where you will take Quebec Autoroute 30 north-east, passing right by Mont-Saint-Bruno National Park.

Continue on A-30 to its completion is Sorel-Tracy, where you'll switch to Quebec Route 132, the longest highway in the province.

Follow this for 65km to Saint Gregoire, passing Nicolet Bird Sanctuary, where you will then change to Quebec Autoroute 55 going north.

Take this road back across the St Lawrence River and just as the road ends and Route 155 begins, exit onto Quebec Autoroute 40 going east and arrive at Trois-Rivieres, a great city for museums and galleries.

Next exit onto Route 359 just north of Champlain to Saint-Narcisse Take this until the exit for Route 352, which takes you to Saint Narcisse. From here, Route 361 will take you back to Quebec Autoroute 40.

Continue on Quebec Autoroute 40 past The Devil's Hole Cave and through delightful towns, following St Lawrence River all the way to Quebec City.

Best places to stop between Montreal and Quebec City

While you could complete the road trip from Montreal to Quebec City in a single day, a much better option would be to include one or two overnight stops en route.

There are some lovely places to stay on this short but scenic journey. Here are some of the best ones you'll pass:

Stay on the banks of three rivers - Trois-Rivieres

At 159km and halfway through your road trip, an ideal overnight stop is the beautiful city of Trois-Rivieres. The second oldest settlement in Quebec, Trois-Rivieres was founded in 1634 and is considered to be the cultural and economic hub of the Mauricie region.

Trois-Rivieres, French for "Three Rivers", is located alongside the Saint Maurice and St Lawrence River. Due to its age, city is full of history, with many of its buildings over 100 years old and features an 18th century monastery, basilica and foundry.

Beyond its history it also has numerous attractions to draw in visitors, including its wonderful collection of islands, rivers, parks and, throughout the summer months, its fabulous selection of festivals.

As a popular tourist destination, Quebec City has a wide range of things to see and do. Sitting on the St Lawrence River in Canada's mostly French-speaking Quebec province, this city dates back to 1608 and has a fortified colonial core.

Discover Vieux-Québec and Place Royale, with stone buildings and narrow streets and the imposing Citadelle of Québec. You can also explore the Petit Champlain district's cobblestone streets which are lined with bistros and boutiques.

Quebec City unsparingly offers a wide range of hotels to choose from. But for a really luxurious stop at the heart of the city, a stay at Le Capitole Hotel is difficult to beat .

The temperature in this part of Canada in winter can reach as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit during December and January, unless you are looking to enjoy some winter sports, the cold will make it difficult to get the most of all of the outdoor attractions.

The best time to visit Quebec City is between June and September, when you will be able to enjoy the warm weather and temperatures a comfortable average of around 55 degrees.

That being said, if you'd rather avoid the tourist season, a visit in April or May would be better. The weather is still a pleasant 30-41 degrees and you can enjoy the stunning spring foliage.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

On a recent afternoon, I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban parks.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter (164 feet) air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, associate director of cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailing into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from several upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s main clients is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby. 

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers. 

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.

“And eventually, we believe that all the cruise lines will get into the St. Lawrence during the winter,” he said. “So, it's gonna be an all-year-round cruise destination.”

As forest fires continue to progress, a return home for 1,000 residents evacuated from Port-Cartier on Friday evening is not yet being considered.

Mayor Alain Thibault, declared a state of emergency Saturday for a period of five days because the fire was “out of control and close enough to infrastructures” of the north shore city. He ordered the evacuation of residents from the Parc Brunel and Parc Dominique areas, as well as those living north of Route 138. A temporary shelter has been set up in Baie-Comeau, a two-hour drive away.

Following a meeting Sunday morning between Port-Cartier officials and the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU), the province’s forest firefighting and prevention agency, authorities held a press conference.

The forest fires have continued to progress, albeit with a more optimistic scenario: SOPFEU representative Mélanie Morin explained weather conditions Saturday and Sunday, with less wind and more humidity, prevented the fires from spreading toward the south and toward homes. However, the fires remain active and out of control.

And there was more positive news — ground teams can be sent in Monday. Until now, the sheer intensity of the fires made it impossible for ground teams to fight the fires safely.

A team charged with managing major fires has been in place since Saturday afternoon, said Morin, operating from Sept-Îles. “In total, there will be 172 forest firefighters, auxiliary firefighters, managers and support personnel who will be there,” she said.

On Sunday morning, the SOPFEU said on its website nine forest fives were active: Five are in the MRC of Sept-Rivières, where Port-Cartier is located. Two of the fires were qualified on the website as “contained” and the rest were described as “out of control.”

Quebec Employment Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain announced an emergency meeting of ministers took place Sunday morning to reinstate an emergency assistance program for residents displaced during the city’s partial evacuation. Premier François Legault made the same announcement on his X account during the Port-Cartier press conference.

A program for the sum of $1,500 to be paid out for every primary residence evacuated is now in effect and residents can make a claim on quebec.ca.

Champagne Jourdain also announced the expenses of municipalities in connection with the forest fires will be entirely reimbursed by Quebec.

“The government will continue to be there for you. We will provide the same support as last year,” she said, adding she remains in “constant contact” with the minister of Public Security, François Bonnardel, and the minister of Natural Resources and Forests, Maïté Blanchette Vézina, to follow “the situation very closely.”

Environment Canada put out a bulletin Sunday morning concerning air quality in the sectors of Sept-Îles and Port-Cartier. It warned “smoke coming from the forest fires causes or risks causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.”

The agency recommends anyone particularly susceptible to being affected by the smoke reduce intense outdoor activities and to consult with a doctor if they believe they need help. Among those most vulnerable to the smoke are elderly people, women who are pregnant or nursing, young children and anyone suffering from chronic health problems.

The agency suggests also members of the general public limit time spent outdoors and keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

Mayor Thibault thanked citizens for their quick response. “Everything was done quickly and efficiently. Everything went well. There was no major accident,” he said.

The fire was 13 kilometres from Port-Cartier on Friday and Saturday.

When the evacuation order was issued, inmates from Port-Cartier Institution, a stand-alone maximum-security institution in Port-Cartier with a current inmate count of 225, were moved from the affected area to other secure federal correctional facilities, the Correctional Service of Canada said Sunday morning.

The institution is closed for visits, including volunteers, contractors or other personnel.

A day in the life of someone who lives in Montreal — the 'Paris of North America'

But on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Canadian province of Quebec, lies another one-of-a-kind city brimming with French culture , fine dining, art, and history: Montreal.

Plus, unlike Paris — which is one of the most expensive places to live — Montreal has struck an ideal balance between a low cost of living and a high quality of life. According to Mercer's 2024 cost-of-living data , it's one of only eight cities from a list of 226 to pull that off.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a suburb outside Montreal before moving away at 19 for university. After spending seven years in Toronto, I returned to Montreal last summer and have spent the past year rediscovering everything it has to offer.

Here's how I spend a typical summer Sunday in Montreal.

I kick off the beautiful sunny day with a bit of people-watching.

I'm fortunate enough to live in the historic and vibrant neighborhood of Plateau Mont-Royal.

My large windows look out onto a busy intersection, so I'll typically spend a weekend morning admiring the trees and passersby from my couch.

Depending on the weekend, I usually either make breakfast at home with my partner or go out to one of Montreal's countless brunch restaurants . But today, I'm meeting a friend for a croissant in my favorite nearby park

Montreal has tons of parks, and one of its cutest is steps away from my apartment.

I head over to Saint Louis Square, a small but beloved urban square and park filled with trees, ample seating, and a Parisian-looking fountain.

There are many parks across the city, but this is one of the cutest and most European-feeling , so I'm glad I live nearby.

The surrounding streets are lined with colorful Victorian houses. Nestled at one end of the park is a small café that sells pastries, ice cream, and beverages throughout the summer.

My friend and I grab fresh pistachio croissants that are still warm.

As the croissants melt in our mouths, my friend swears it's one of the best she's ever had.

Eating a fresh, gooey croissant in Montreal is as common as seeing an orange construction cone — one of the less glamorous things we're known for is lots of road construction.

More friends join us for the morning.

After we eat, two of my other nearby friends come to meet us. One walked over with a dog she was watching for a friend, and the other took a public bike.

Montreal is one of the most bike-friendly cities in North America. Many of its streets are adorned with bike lanes and Bixi stations (the public bike-sharing service) are affordable and widespread.

The four of us head over to St. Denis, one of the city’s most popular streets.

Since St. Denis Street was closed off to cars for the weekend for a comic arts festival, we took the opportunity to wander around.

There was plenty of art to look at and all sorts of other goodies on display.

Montreal is beloved for its many street festivals. Walking through our first of the season finally made it feel like summer had arrived.

After grabbing an iced latte, my partner met up with us.

Les Co'Pains d'abord is a boulangerie (bakery) in the neighborhood that serves fresh baguettes and croissants alongside delicious coffee.

The café has become one of my partner's go-to spots for a latte when he's in my neighborhood, so he grabs one before meeting up with us.

We explore the stands and tables full of handmade and boutique items.

This area is filled with stores that are mostly independent and local, so finding unique, handmade goods is easy. It's a great place to shop if you're looking to support small businesses and find something one-of-a-kind.

Browsing around one of my favorite stores, Paperole, is a must.

Paperole sells books, accessories, and art made by local Montreal creators.

Since discovering this store, I no longer buy cards at the pharmacy or gifts at major chains. Instead, I try to support local artists — which means my presents have gotten much cuter.

But while we wander the store, all I can think about is how hungry I am.

I pop across the street to a spot I love called Teochew Foodie.

Nearby, Teochew Foodie is selling dumplings at an outdoor booth. I buy four fried wontons for 4 Canadian dollars.

The dumplings are fresh and delicious, and I munch on them while we walk.

Although food prices are rising across Canada and the United States, Montreal is one of the last major cities where you can still enjoy yourself for a pretty affordable price.

I’m still hungry, so we find more food.

For lunch, we all share focaccia with spicy capicola, burrata, figs, and honey from a popular restaurant called La Panzeria.

Eating Asian- and Italian-inspired dishes just moments apart is common in Montreal — the city's food scene is one of the most diverse and vibrant in the country.

But we're particularly famous for our French and Quebecois food (you may have heard of poutine).

With our stomachs full, we keep exploring pedestrian streets.

Duluth Street is pedestrianized (closed to cars) for the entire summer. Like many surrounding streets, it's packed with restaurants and independent shops.

We wander around a bookshop, admiring the colorful buildings, and briefly browse a garage sale before parting ways with my friends for the day.

My partner and I take the metro to his apartment for the evening.

Montreal's metro system is expansive and user-friendly. As a bonus, many of its stations feature public art .

If you live downtown like I do, I think it's the easiest way to get around.

We end the night with dinner from Mandy’s, a popular salad shop.

I haven't had a vegetable all day (I usually eat lots, I swear), so we order salads from Mandy's, a fast-casual salad chain .

We end our night with "Modern Family" and a New York Times crossword while chatting about how lucky we feel to live in such a lively and beautiful city.
