In partnership with the United States, Qatar has contributed to the region’s progress, stability, and prosperity by playing a constructive role financially, politically, and militarily.

Every year, thousands of American citizens visit Qatar for both tourism and business purposes. According to Qatar Tourism, more than 2.56 million tourists visited Qatar in the first 8 months of 2023, with the USA ranking among the top 10 source countries. Additionally, there are thousands of US citizens living and working in Qatar

This article explains everything you need to know about getting a Qatar Visa for US Citizens and the essential things to consider before traveling to Qatar.

Qatar has a very liberal visa-on-arrival policy that enables travellers from more than 100 countries to visit Qatar without a pre-arranged visa. This approach is commonly referred to as a visa-waiver program .

Now, let’s address the most common question:

Do US citizens need visa for Qatar?

US citizens with a regular passport can travel to Qatar as tourists for a maximum of 30 days , subject to specific conditions. Additionally, they have the option to extend this visa-waiver for an additional 30 days.

Here are the essential requirements to qualify for this visa on arrival:

  • Your passport must remain valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
  • You should possess a return or onward flight ticket.
  • You must secure a hotel booking or a confirmed accommodation.
  • If your intended stay in Qatar exceeds 30 days, it’s mandatory to acquire a visitor’s health insurance through the MOPH website.

You can read more about Qatar’s visa-on-arrival scheme here .

The visa on arrival explained above is issued free of cost . The visa extension is also free.

Qatar Oman Joint Visa

Nationals of the USA can also travel to Qatar without a visa if they have a valid tourist visa issued by Oman. Passengers with such visas can enter either Oman or Qatar first but are not allowed to depart to a third country. You can read about the Qatar-Oman Joint Tourist Visa here .

US citizens (or citizens of any country) traveling through Qatar and not planning to leave the airport do not need a transit visa . For more information, refer to our detailed guide about transit through Doha airport .

The online application service for the Qatar Transit Visa is currently suspended. Travelers who intend to explore the city during their layover can utilize the visa-on-arrival option as described earlier. Alternatively, you can inquire at your local Qatar Airways office to check if they can provide a Transit Visa.

The free visa-on-arrival facility applies only to US citizens and not to US residents or Green Card holders . US residents with a foreign passport should check if the country of their citizenship is eligible for a visa on arrival to Qatar.

If not, they can apply for Electronic Travel Authorization – ETA (A3) visa through the Hayya Portal. They can also enter using other visas like Tourist Visa , Family Visit Visa or Business Visa .

Foreign nationals with US visitor visas can apply for ETA (A3) visa through the Hayya Portal . Alternatively they can check if their nationality is eligible for visa-on-arrival .

If you’re booking flights to Qatar, we highly recommend Qatar Airways. It’s rated as a 5-star airline and is renowned for its luxury, comfort, and extensive global network. Booking with Qatar Airways guarantees an exceptional travel experience. You can see the latest offers from Qatar Airways here .

US citizens visiting Qatar should be mindful of respecting the local traditions, cultures, and laws. The following things should be kept in mind:

  • The public dress code in Qatar requires that men and women cover shoulders, chests, stomachs, and knees, and that tight leggings be covered by long shirts or dresses.
  • Alcohol is legal in Qatar but highly regulated and only available in limited locations to non-Muslim non-Qatari adults aged 21+. Public drinking and intoxication are punishable. See our guide to alcohol laws in Qatar.
  • It is illegal in Qatar to engage in sexual relations outside of marriage.
  • Medical facilities in Qatar require pregnant women to present a marriage certificate to receive prenatal care.
  • According to the US Government Travel Advice , US Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept US health insurance. The US Embassy strongly recommends supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.
  • Homosexuality is criminalized in Qatar. LGBTQIA+ travelers should consult the official Department of State Travel Advisory for Qatar for more detailed information.
  • Most illegal drugs in the United States are illegal in Qatar, including marijuana/THC.
  • It is illegal to take photos and videos of strangers without their permission.
  • Visitors can drive temporarily in Qatar with their US driving license. Traffic accidents and tickets are considered seriously. See our guide to driving in Qatar .

The U.S. Embassy Doha prioritizes visa applicants who are Qatari citizens or residents. We are not able to expedite appointments for applicants who do not reside in our consular district (Qatar). Applicants may be asked to present proof of Qatari citizenship or residency.

If you are a Qatari citizen or resident seeking to schedule an appointment for a petition-based visa interview, including H or L visa, or you received your initial H or L while residing in Doha and are renewing, please set up a profile on this page and schedule an appointment. You may then follow the instructions to request an expedited appointment. Please include the names of all family members and copies of your Qatar ID. Select here to learn more about an important update on waivers of the interview requirement for certain nonimmigrant visa applicants.

Secretary Blinken, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, has temporarily expanded the ability of consular officers to waive the in-person interview requirement for individuals applying for a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification. Previously, only those applicants whose nonimmigrant visa expired within 24 months were eligible for an interview waiver. The Secretary has temporarily extended the expiration period to 48 months. This policy is in effect until December 31, 2021. This change will allow consular officers to continue processing certain nonimmigrant visa applications while limiting the number of applicants who must appear at a consular section, thereby reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission to other applicants and consular staff. Travelers are encouraged to review the website of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for detailed information on what services are currently available as well as eligibility information and instructions on applying for a visa without an interview.Interview waiver (visa renewal) is available for all Qatari citizens who apply for a new visa (in the same class of service) with in 48 months of their previous visa’s expiration date.

There are no specific additional or supporting documents you should bring during your interview. The officers will ask you will depend on your circumstances or answers. Some even experienced an interviewer not asking for documents. But it’s better to be ready, just-in-case!

1. Proof of Financial Means

  • Bank Statements/Certificate
  • Business Registration
  • Certificate of Employment
  • Tax Returns
  • Property Ownership
  • In case you are sponsored by another person, their financial documents

2. Travel itinerary

  • Flight Reservations
  • Hotel Bookings

Rent A Flight

3. No Objection Letter – from your Employer with your details like salary, position, etc. Here’s a format .

4. Qatar Residence Permit / Iqama

4. For students – school documents or certificate

5. In case you are visiting a friend or relative – their US Passport, Green Card, or Resident Permit plus proof of your relationship

Tips with your Interview for your US Tourist Visa

The interview is only brief, so it’s better to make the most out of it. Here are the applicable tips during your interview with the officer:

1. Dress Properly – Look what you say you are. Dress according to what you are – a student, an employee, etc. No need to have a coat and tie or an extravagant dress. But surely don’t wear sleeveless, shorts, or pajamas as you may not be allowed to enter the embassies premises.

2. Be confident and positive – walk, smile, talk confidently. You can practice in the mirror before your interview. Think of positive thoughts. Remember the law of attraction.

3. Politeness is the key – Be respectful to the interviewer and don’t argue. In case you don’t understand or fail to hear the question, a simple “Could you please repeat the question” would suffice.

4. Less Talk, Less Mistake – don’t overshare, it’s better if you answer the questions short and straight to the point. For example, the interviewer asks for your purpose of visiting the US – you could say for sightseeing, not I would be sightseeing then spending time with my boyfriend or friends. They would ask more questions about the people you are seeing, and you might screw the interview, especially if the documents aren’t prepared.

5. Be Honest – interviewers are trained to know if people are lying or not. It’s better, to be honest in the interview as well as your DS-160 form. All information is there; if you say you have a relative in the interview but said none in the form; then you may get denied. Your interview is also taken record of, so don’t outsmart these guys.

FAQS About   US Tourist Visa

1. How much show money do I need?

It really depends on how many days you are there and your itinerary, but I’m not entirely sure how much you’ll need. You might be asked for a bank statement or not.

2. What if my visa gets denied? Is there a time limit as to when I can re-apply?

Re-apply again, there’s no limit.

3. Is the visa fee refundable?

No, once you have paid it, you can’t get it back even though you will not push through with your interview or application.

4. What could make the Consul change his mind and grant my visa on re-application?

There should be a “significant change” on your situation, whether it’s family, economic, or social. For example, you didn’t have a source of income on your previous application, but you’re employed/you have a business now.

5. How long is the validity of the US Visa?

It depends on the Consul, it could range from 3 months to 10-Years Multiple Entry. You’ll know the result once you claim your visa.

It is not required to have one, but I recommend getting travel insurance.

Interview Guidelines

Sending documents to the U.S. Embassy in Doha

If the U.S. Embassy requests additional information or documentation from you, the consular officer will provide instructions on how to submit those to the embassy.

Rescheduling or cancelling your interview

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please email http://tinyurl.com/dohavisas . There may be a significant wait before the next available appointment , so please attempt to attend the date already assigned. For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa became available within the month you have been scheduled by NVC. DV applicants should be aware that visas are numerically limited and must be issued by September 30 of the program year. There is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview. Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you request to reschedule your interview.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Embassy in Doha must follow certain security procedures. Any visitor who declines to be screened by U.S. Embassy security personnel will be unable to enter the embassy. To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview. Please do not arrive earlier than 15 minutes before your appointment – you cannot enter the embassy any earlier.

Accompanying persons

Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview. Only the following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

  • Interpreter: Applicants may bring ONE interpreter if they do not speak English or Arabic well enough to participate in an interview.
  • Special Needs Visitors: Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child.

Immigrant visa fees

If you have not paid all required fees to the National Visa Center, please be prepared to pay these fees on the day of your interview. All fees may be paid in either U.S. dollars or the Qatari dollar equivalent. We only accept cash and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Novus/Discover, and Diners Card) . We cannot accept personal checks. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded. A complete list of fees can be found here .

Do not make travel plans outside of Qatar

If your visa is approved, we will keep your passport at the embassy while we prepare your immigration packet and print a visa for your passport. We will return your passport to you later via courier services only. If you have to travel within Qatar while your passport is still with us, please make sure you have a valid picture ID other than your passport.

After Your Visa Interview

A consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because he/she needs to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the embassy.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will place your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors. We will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time. Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you. Do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Unless they are eligible for benefits under the Child Status Protection Act, children who are issued a visa before turning 21 years of age must enter the United States before their 21st birthday to avoid losing their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. If you plan to travel outside the U.S. before your green card arrives: Please consult USCIS’s and CBP’s websites for rules about what documents you need to re-enter the country. We also recommend you check with the airline to ensure you are in compliance with their rules. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – In the United States, children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school. We recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. If your child is adopted, you have full custody as a result of a divorce, or you share custody with another parent, you should bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custody papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will need these papers (translated into English) for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Information for New Immigrants – Please visit the USCIS web page for helpful information on moving to the United States. You can read their publication “Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants” online.

Diversity Visa Applicants – Additional Information

If you are interviewing for a Diversity Visa (DV), all of the above instructions apply to you. Please schedule and attend a medical examination prior to your visa interview, and gather the required documents.

Below are additional instructions that apply only to DV applicants.

Bring to your interview

In addition to the documents listed on the Pre-Interview Checklist in this package, DV applicants should also bring the following items to your visa interview:

  • Appointment information printed from the “Entrant Status Check” on the E-DV website .
  • Documents showing that you have either a qualifying high school education OR two (2) years of qualifying work experience in the five (5) years immediately prior to application (for the principal applicant only; more information is available online ).
  • Payment in cash of the $330 Diversity Visa Application Fee for each visa applicant.

Review your DV Lottery entry

Prior to your visa interview, we recommend that you review the data on your initial E-DV entry. On your initial E-DV application, you must have correctly entered your marital status. If you are legally married you must have listed your spouse, even if you are currently separated from him/her (unless your spouse is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident).

Additionally, you must have listed ALL of your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years old. This includes your natural children, your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the laws of your country.

Failure to have listed an existing spouse or children at the time of your entry in the Diversity Visa lottery will result in the denial of your visa and visas for your family . Any fees paid to the U.S. government in support of your visa application(s) are nonrefundable. If you failed to include a child who had already been born, or a spouse to whom you were married when you entered the lottery, you should not proceed with the visa application. You can review the eligibility requirements online .

Medical Appointment Letter

Please print the PDF copy of the Medical Appointment letter and bring it to your medical examination appointment along with items listed in Step 1 above. Give the letter to the reception desk at the medical appointment. Print Medical Examination Letter.

Exploring the Path to a Qatar Visa: What You Need to Know

For those planning to visit the vibrant nation of Qatar 🇶🇦, understanding the visa process is critical. Qatar’s visa policy is notable for its leniency compared to other Middle Eastern countries. Many travelers find that entering Qatar can be a straightforward process, especially as the country offers various entry schemes ranging from visa-free access to e-services. Here’s a detailed explanation to guide you through the requirements, options, and procedures related with acquiring a Qatar visa.

Qatar Visa: Online, On Arrival & Embassy Guide

Can You Enter Qatar Without a Visa?

Qatar offers a generous visa policy, allowing citizens from specific countries to enter visa-free. This benefit is extended for different durations, generally up to 90 or 30 days.

  • 90-Day Visa-Free Entry : Nationals from the European Union (excluding Ireland 🇮🇪), Antigua and Barbuda 🇦🇬, Argentina 🇦🇷, Armenia 🇦🇲, Bahamas 🇧🇸, Brazil 🇧🇷, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, Iceland 🇮🇸, Liechtenstein 🇱🇮, Malaysia 🇲🇾, Norway 🇳🇴, Russia 🇷🇺, Serbia 🇷🇸, Seychelles 🇸🇨, Switzerland 🇨🇭, Turkey 🇹🇷, and Ukraine 🇺🇦 can visit for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

30-Day Visa-Free Entry : Individuals from Andorra 🇦🇩, Australia 🇦🇺, Azerbaijan 🇦🇿, Belarus 🇧🇾, Bolivia 🇧🇴, Brunei 🇧🇳, Canada 🇨🇦, Chile 🇨🇱, China 🇨🇳, Colombia 🇨🇴, Costa Rica 🇨🇷, Cuba 🇨🇺, Ecuador 🇪🇨, Georgia 🇬🇪, Guyana 🇬🇾, Hong Kong 🇭🇰, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Ireland 🇮🇪, Japan 🇯🇵, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿, Lebanon 🇱🇧, Maldives 🇲🇻, Mexico 🇲🇽, Moldova 🇲🇩, Monaco 🇲🇨, New Zealand 🇳🇿, North Macedonia 🇲🇰, Panama 🇵🇦, Paraguay 🇵🇾, Peru 🇵🇪, Rwanda 🇷🇼 (with conditions), San Marino 🇸🇲, Singapore 🇸🇬, South Africa 🇿🇦, South Korea 🇰🇷, Suriname 🇸🇷, Thailand 🇹🇭, United Kingdom 🇬🇧, United States 🇺🇸, Uruguay 🇺🇾, Vatican City 🇻🇦, and Venezuela 🇻🇪 can stay for 30 days, extendable by another 30 days.

Conditional Visa Exemptions

Certain nations, such as India 🇮🇳 and Pakistan 🇵🇰, enjoy conditions that allow them to enter Qatar without a visa, provided they meet specific criteria like having a valid passport (with at least six months validity), confirmed return tickets, hotel reservations, and in some cases, proof of vaccination against diseases such as polio.

Who Is Eligible for a Visa on Arrival?

When a visa-free entry isn’t possible, several nationalities can still obtain a Qatar visa on arrival. This is particularly beneficial for citizens from countries like Andorra, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, and Spain—to name a few. The visa on arrival facilitates entry to both Qatar and Oman for a period of up to 30 days.

What Is an Electronic Travel Authorization for Qatar?

Certain travelers can gain entry into Qatar using an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) if they have a valid tourist visa or residence permit from countries like Australia 🇦🇺, any Schengen Zone country, New Zealand 🇳🇿, the United Kingdom 🇬🇧, or the United States 🇺🇸. Applicants need to submit an online form with electronic copies of essential documents, including hotel reservations and return-trip tickets.

To apply for a Qatar visa online, here are the core requirements:

  • A scanned color copy of your passport’s biographic information page
  • A recent passport-sized photograph
  • A confirmed airline ticket
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel reservation
  • Additional documents are needed if staying with a relative/friend, including their Qatar ID, residency visa, passport copy, and rental agreement if applicable

Residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries require their residence visa and ID card for the same. The Ministry of Interior handles processing, and should they need more documentation, they will notify applicants.

How Can You Apply for a Qatar Online Visa for Tourism?

Applicants who do not qualify for visa-free or on-arrival entrance are directed to the country’s online visa portal. Here’s how you should proceed:

  • Complete the Application Form : Begin by filling out the online form with your details and attach the required document copies.
  • Pay the Fee : The visa fee is QAR 100, approximately US$ 27, payable via credit or debit card.
  • Receive Confirmation : After processing, the outcome will be emailed. It’s important to print and carry this visa approval when traveling.

Transit Visa Considerations

For travelers simply passing through Qatar, particularly during layovers exceeding five hours, a transit visa might be an option. Although its online application is currently suspended, travelers can still consider visa-on-arrival alternatives if eligible. The transit visa permits a 96-hour stay and must be applied online, similar to a tourist visa, often needing just a passport scan and proof of onward travel.

How Long Does It Take to Process a Qatar Visa?

Typically, processing a Qatar visa takes 4 working days, assuming the application is complete and accurate. Delays might occur if additional documentation is required or due to high application volumes.

Qatar Visa Costs Explained

The standard fee for a Qatar tourist visa is QAR 100 (approximately US$ 27). However, family members or other dependents accompanying the primary applicant incur an additional fee of QAR 50 (around US$ 13). Service fees may also apply depending on the service provider.

What Is the Duration of a Qatar Visa?

A typical Qatar tourist visa grants a single-entry stay for 30 days. To extend this, visitors should seek an extension through the Ministry of Interior’s services once in Qatar.

Extending Your Stay in Qatar

For visitors eligible for a 30-day visa-free entry, an extension is possible at the Ministry of Interior’s Immigration Office at the Hamad International Airport or any MOI Service Center. An additional 30 days can be added for a fee of QAR 200 for a visa extension application.

Consequences of Overstaying the Permitted Duration

It is crucial to abide by the terms of your stay. Exceeding the allowed duration results in a daily penalty fee of QAR 200 (approximately US$ 54), payable before departure.

In conclusion, the process for acquiring a Qatar visa is accommodative, whether you’re entering this fascinating nation for tourism, business, or as a transit passenger. By understanding your eligibility and the necessary steps, entering Qatar can be as seamless and straightforward as possible. For additional authoritative information, visit the Qatar Ministry of Interior’s website to access the latest updates and services.

According to VisaVerge.com, Qatar’s approach to visa accessibility is part of their broader strategy to enhance tourism and international relations, thus making the destination a more welcoming choice for travelers from around the world.

Bank and Payment Options/Pay My Visa Fee

Instructions to pay your visa fee, fee payment options, scheduling your interview.

Most applicants, including children, are required to pay a Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee to initiate their U.S. visa application. This US Government-mandated fee is a visa processing fee that is payable whether or not a visa is issued.

The MRV fee is non-refundable and non-transferable . Applicants should first determine whether or not they require a visa to travel to the US before submitting their applications.

Examples of individuals that may not require a visa include, but are not limited to:

Click on Schedule My Appointment option on the left-hand side of your screen. Complete steps for Visa Type, Post, Visa Category and Visa Class.
