Jerry craft.

JERRY CRAFT is an author and illustrator. New Kid is his middle grade graphic novel that has earned five starred reviews, including one from Booklist magazine, which called it “possibly one of the most important graphic novels of the year.” Kirkus Reviews called it “an engrossing, humorous, and vitally important graphic novel that should be required reading in every middle school in America.”He is the creator of Mama’s Boyz, a comic strip that was distributed by King Features Syndicate from 1995-2013, and won five African American Literary Awards. Jerry is a co-founder of the Schomburg’s Annual Black Comic Book Festival. He was born in Harlem and grew up in nearby Washington Heights. He is a graduate of The Fieldston School and received his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts.

Graphic Novel Review: School Trip by Jerry Craft

School Trip is the third of author and illustrator Jerry Craft’s full colour graphic novels featuring the entirely lovable character Jordan Banks. You can read my review of the multiple prize-winning New Kid which detailed Jordan’s life as a scholarship boy at the prestigious Riverdale Academy Day School here .

School Trip begins with Jordan receiving the news that he has been offered a place at The High School of Music, Art and Mime; a huge deal for a boy who loves to draw comic books. Before he has a chance to process this news, the school trip allocations are posted and Jordan is delighted to learn that he’s heading to Paris with best friends Drew and Liam. Also on the trip will be Ramon, Maury, Alexandra (Girl Alex), Ashley, Samira (all of whom are likely to be great travel companions) and Andy (who acts in an ignorant, arrogant and insensitive way to anyone who does not share his privileged, white background). Some mischievous interference with the teacher schedules means that the trip is accompanied by Coach Roche and Mr Garner, neither of whom speak French and who are not in possession of the correct school credit card. It looks as if this trip of a lifetime is about to go terribly wrong…until Maury steps up and becomes the lead character in this novel.

I will state right now that School Trip will be one of my books of the year. It is an absolute pleasure to read and being a graphic novel, it is a book which you can finish reading very quickly as you are unlikely to want to put it down once you immerse yourself in Jerry Craft’s brilliant combination of art and narrative. His characters are totally believable, the expressive graphics and natural conversations bring the story alive in your mind and for me the novel certainly played out like a movie in my brain. I love the clever design switch into black and white graphics whenever we are treated to one of Jordan’s life lessons and are able to see his wise reflections on the situations he experiences. There is humour, warmth, and real character growth as students and teachers learn lessons about themselves and each other as they navigate a foreign city.

And then you can dig deeper and realise that this is so much more than an entirely enjoyable quick comic book read, for there are so many lessons that can be taken from this masterpiece. Jerry Craft is very clear about the fact that he has created books that he would have wanted to read when he was younger, featuring African American children at the centre of the story in positive, inspiring, empowering situations. At one point in the story Jordan reflects on the fact that his friends from Washington Heights do not dream of going to Paris because they have never read a book or watched a movie where a black kid travels on a European vacation. There’s an incredibly touching moment near the end where he hands his friend Kirk a gift to inspire him to travel.

There are many examples of racism and micro-aggressions portrayed throughout the story, many of which concern Andy, but I will mention a couple of non-Andy situations that caught my eye. Liam, who is from a very affluent white family, has Jordan and Drew to stay at his house the night before they head to France. His grandparents are sitting on the sofa when the boys arrive and there is the most exquisitely subtle illustration of Grammy pulling her handbag closer to her when she sees that Liam has two black friends in the house. Prior to this, there is a scene in a shopping mall when Drew realises that the shop assistant has not removed the security tag from a shirt that he has bought, but he daren’t go back to the shop to point out the mistake because he is sure he will be accused of stealing. These moments really hit home to me, a white middle-aged reader, the unfairness of being pre-judged because of skin colour and the effect that this must have as soon as children become aware of it.

Inequalities and misconceptions are explored in interesting ways and I was intrigued that even Jordan and Drew were shown to be astonished to find that Maury’s father had formerly been the boss of Liam’s father, the disbelief that a black man could be even more rich and powerful than a white man had presumably not been something they had experienced before. Fortunately for all the characters in this story, Maury’s experience of regular Parisian holidays, his fluency in French and his credit card with its generous credit limit ensures that the trip is a great success; especially when each character finds the strength to talk about their challenges and their desires. The ability to learn from previous misconceptions, to own mistakes and to make the effort to listen to others’ experiences and change as a result is best embodied (for this librarian reader) by school librarian Miss Brickner! In the same way that she starts to stack the library shelves with graphic novels and stories which feature positive representation of minoritised characters, I urge all school librarians and upper key stage 2/key stage 3 class teachers to purchase a copy of School Trip , it’s an essential read for anyone of 9 and above.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood

The medium of storytelling is as important as the story itself in a graphic novel. By using frames of drawing with minimal text, the graphic novel calls on the reader to enter into a different kind of textual interpretation. A reader must read the captions of the frames and interpret this text within the context of the paneled art. Artistic style becomes as important as text for relaying narrative to the reader.

Persepolis brings a particular graphic style to the autobiographical narrative. Satrapi draws in a minimalist style: black and white, often only six to eight panels on a page. This style is meant to represent a childlike understanding of the world since the novel follows Satrapi's own childhood. The black and white symbolizes both the past and how the Islamic revolution left Iran devoid of its rich colorful cultural history. The medium of the graphic novel is also important here because iconic representations of Islam are forbidden by the Islamic regime. The novel is, thus, a form of protest as well as art.

Tension between Past and Present

Throughout the novel, Marjane feels a tension between the great and glorious past of the Persian Empire and the violence and problems of modern Iran. In the novel's opening chapters, she identifies herself with the great prophets of the past dating back to Zarathustra. She imagines herself as a symbol of love and tolerance. When the Iran-Iraq War begins, she vehemently defends it as a just cause and relates it to a 1400-year conflict that has been waged between the Arabs and the Persians.

This unwavering belief in the past is put in tension with the novel's present day political intolerance and religious fundamentalism. Marjane's pride in her history is in direct conflict with the imprisonment of political revolutionaries and, later, the execution of those that speak out against the strict cultural demands of the Islamic regime. Marjane's journey through the novel is an exploration of how one can love one's past while denouncing its present condition.

Bildungsroman

The bildungsroman is a genre of literature in which the protagonist undergoes a process of intense moral growth and self-actualization. For a work to be considered a bildungsroman, the protagonist must progress from childhood to adulthood, leave home to undergo a journey, and develop a more mature understanding of his or her self.

Satrapi's novel, especially if considered in the larger context of the second volume of the series, falls into all of these categories. Marjane begins Persepolis as a child and by the end of the novel declares her independence from her mother and father through the ritual of smoking a cigarette. Marjane's parents force her to leave her war torn home for her safety and this begins her journey. Throughout the novel Marjane must reconcile her own beliefs and understanding of the world with the strict cultural rules of the Islamic regime.

Class Conflict

Class conflict is an underlying tension throughout the novel. At the beginning, Marjane cannot quite grasp how her father can drive a Cadillac and her family can have a maid while also preaching the virtues of class-consciousness and equality. Iran's history is seen as a history of both great wealth and great poverty. The 1979 Revolution is characterized by Satrapi as largely a Marxist revolution undertaken by the urban cultural elites on behalf of the impoverished people of Iran's countryside.

This conflict is more clearly seen in the chapter " The Letter ." In this chapter, Marjane's maid is forced to abandon her love for a neighbor. They cannot be together, Mr. Satrapi tells his daughter, because their social classes are not supposed to marry. Marjane sees a great injustice in this belief because, at the same time, her parents march in the streets for a Marxist revolution in the nation.

Modernity vs. Fundamentalism

The inability of the Marxist and Socialist revolutionaries to gain political power after the 1979 Revolution causes a great strain for families such as the Satrapis. These families see themselves as modern people. They hold Western political and social beliefs. This is not just seen in the kinds of Western material things that Marjane and her family seek out -- things like rock posters, jean jackets, hamburgers, and Cadillacs. It is also seen in the social values that they hold -- a belief in the rights of women, liberal education, and human rights.

Religious and ideological fundamentalism is portrayed as a hindrance to the development of Iran. This fundamentalism represses its people. It not only takes away the material things that the people enjoy but it also takes away their identity and dignity. According to the author in the book's introduction, one of the chief reasons for writing Persepolis is to show the perspective of a modern Iran persecuted and punished by a few "extremists."

The Abandonment of Faith

Much of the novel's first half is a recounting of the author's loss of naivety and faith. As a child, Marjane sees herself as a prophet in the line of Zarathustra, Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed. Her imaginary friend is her vision of God as an old man with a long flowing beard. In these scenes from childhood, God encourages Marjane to become a prophet and to stand up for love and justice.

As Marjane begins to confront the political and social realities of her world, the reader sees her slowly detaching from her faith. As she hears stories of political imprisonment and torture, she finds that God no longer gives her comfort. As the Islamic regime comes into power, she feels that she cannot defend a faith represented by such fundamentalism. The imprisonment and execution of her Uncle Anoosh causes a break in her faith and she describes herself as lost and alone in the universe.

The Relationship between Parents and Children

Throughout the novel, Satrapi uses her own relationship with her parents as a metaphor for her relationship with her country and the wider world. The conflict and love she experiences with her parents is a necessary part of her growth as a person. Her relationship with her mother and father is both tender and full of tension. Her parents love her and seek to provide her with the best in education and upbringing. They hope to provide her with a life full of privileges.

At the same time, however, Marjane feels a great tension between her parents' political views and their actions. Their belief in equality and liberation for the working classes conflicts with the privilege that they hold and seek in society. On one occasion, Marjane compares her mother to the Guardians of the Revolution, the secret police force of the Islamic regime. The end of the novel is a representation of the eventual break that all children must have with those that raise them. In Marjane's case, she also breaks with the country and culture that raised her.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi is a graphic memoir about Satrapi’s experiences growing up in Tehran, Iran before and after the revolution in 1979. Originally published in France to critical acclaim in four volumes between 2000-2003, it was translated into English in two volumes in 2003 and 2004. Named a New York Times Notable Book as well as a Time Magazine “Best Comix of the Year,” the book was a San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times bestseller. Characterized by Satrapi’s distinct black and white visual style and whimsical, rounded drawings depicting the violent events before and after the revolution, Persepolis and Persepolis 2 were also made into a critically acclaimed, animated movie in 2007. The book’s title refers to the ancient Persian city of Persepolis.

Plot Summary

Persepolis is both an autobiography as well as a bildungsroman or coming-of-age tale. Satrapi begins her story with an Introduction including brief historical context about Iran and the events leading up to the revolution. Iran as a nation and cultural entity persists despite centuries of outside influence and invasion this sets up Satrapi's book as a means to help preserve Iranian culture as she knows it in spite of the oppressive fundamentalist regime.

The story opens in Tehran in 1980, a year after the revolution, as Satrapi and her female peers are forced to wear a veil. Her coed bilingual school closed and reopened because it was initially seen as a symbol of capitalism. She and her family are disoriented by the rapid changes and rise in Islamic extremism in Iran and are struggling to adjust.

Satrapi reveals she believed herself to be a prophet at the age of six, but she no longer believed this once the revolution began. She becomes fascinated by socialist revolutionary icons like Che Guevara and Karl Marx and wishes to join her parents, who go to daily demonstrations. When Satrapi overhears that 400 civilians are killed in a movie theater, she pleads with her parents to let her join the protests, but they tell her it is too dangerous.

Satrapi’s parents are educated and progressive, and they tell her that her grandfather was once an Iranian prince. The shah appointed her grandfather as prime minister, but eventually imprisoned and tortured him. When she hears that her grandfather was held in a “water cell” for hours a day, she soaks in the bathtub for as long as she can to better understand his plight. These family stories fascinate Satrapi and she becomes obsessed with asking questions about the heroes of her family.

Desperately wishing to better understand what is going on in her country and what her parents are demonstrating for, Satrapi immerses herself in books. Despite the differences in social class, Satrapi befriends her maid, Mehri , and helps her write love letters to the boy next door in exchange for a day at the protests. But later that evening, they learn that these protests ended in a massacre.

As violence and tensions escalate, more and more massacres occur; yet, political prisoners are also freed. Satrapi meets her parents’ friends who had been imprisoned and tortured, as well as her Uncle Anoosh , all of who share stories of resistance. Uncle Anoosh tells her about the time he spent in Moscow, where he earned his PhD. Then he suddenly vanishes. Satrapi learns he has been imprisoned for espionage. She visits him in jail; he is executed shortly afterwards, which is a tragedy breaking Satrapi’s heart.

The family takes a vacation in Europe, but right before they return home, the Iran-Iraq War breaks out. The fundamentalist regime cracks down on “Western” ideas, closing schools and universities as well as forcing women to wear the veil. Satrapi and her family grow more anxious, which is exacerbated when her mother is assaulted. A family friend’s house is destroyed in a bombing, and while they stay with Satrapi and her parents, they hear other Iranians gossiping about “refugees.” Satrapi’s mother despairs that Iranians are fighting against and looking down upon their fellow citizens.

Although she is instructed not to draw attention to herself and to keep her head down, Satrapi and everyone around her still find moments of fun and joy, playing illegal music and making and drinking illicit alcohol. But as the war continues, Satrapi grows more and more disillusioned and rebellious. Her Uncle Taher, whose health is declining, is unable to receive adequate medical treatment in Iran; Satrapi’s father attempts to get him an illegal passport, but the man who will forge the passport for them is raided and Taher dies.

A year after Taher passes away, Iran reopens its borders. Satrapi’s parents travel abroad and bring her back illegal Western clothes and music, which get her into trouble with the law and results in a close call with the Guardians of the Revolution . Tehran becomes the target of Iraqi bombings, and Satrapi’s next door neighbor’s house is destroyed, killing the girl who lived there who was close in age to Satrapi.

Terrified of what will happen to their daughter, Satrapi’s parents send her to a French school in Austria to keep her safe. They tell her they will soon join her abroad, but she knows they are lying to her. When they drop her off at the airport, she turns around one last time to say good-bye, only to find her mother has collapsed from heartbreak.
