Buying or importing Trek, Canyon and Specialized bicycles in Thailand

Table of contents

Table of Contents

TL;DR Buy a Trek from your local Trek shop. I have bought about a dozen bicycles in Thailand; five for me and seven as gifts for others. I have bought from local bike shops and I have privately imported bikes. Here is what I found at the higher end of the market for bikes priced around $6500 USD.

Trek Thailand – Good bikes, great support

The best brand of bike to buy in Thailand is Trek. Not because Trek makes the best bikes in the world, they are very good but I prefer my Specialized. Rather because Trek has the best importer with the best network of local bike shops and the best service and support in Thailand. Trek’s Thailand importer is Probike , their main showroom is at Lumpini Park Bangkok, but all Trek shops in Thailand are part of their network. Their website shows the bikes they have in stock which you can buy right away, but you are not limited to those bikes. You can order any bike that Trek makes and they will get it to you within about six weeks.

Probike also do an excellent job of choosing which brands of accessories to sell. They get the balance right between quality and affordability. All the accessories are well made and good value.

From my local Trek shop I have purchased kids bikes that were in stock in Bangkok, so they took a couple of days to get to me. As well as Trek bikes that Probike does not normally import, so I had to make a special order and wait six weeks for those to arrive.

Privately importing a bicycle to Thailand

Here is a post about overseas shopping and ship forwad to Thailand in general.

In the middle of the covid supply-chain crunch, the wait time through Probike for the Trek Checkpoint SL 7 was eight months! Meanwhile it was for sale at an online bike shop that would deliver anywhere in the UK.

So I purchased it from the UK shop and had them send it to my UK shipping forward company, who then sent it to me. I had done this before with a Specialized and it worked out okay. This time by the end of the process I wished I had waited the eight months instead!

For shipping forward I use MyUS . They are pretty good for forwarding packages from the USA, but they are lousy from the UK. The bike was also on sale at bike shops in the USA but both Trek and Specialized do not allow home delivery of bikes in the US; you have to go to a shop and pick them up and I could not find any private shopper who would do this.

MyUS’s UK center did not notify me when the bike arrived and were very unresponsive when I contacted them. With MyUS from the USA you get multiple shipping options, from the UK there is only one and it was more than $2000 USD.

When the bike finally got to Thailand I got the import duty bill and it was almost as much as the bike itself! They had incorrectly classified the bike as electric which meant it attracted 67% import duty instead of the correct 37%. That’s a big difference on a $7000 bike. Plus the duty is calculated as a %, including the cost of shipping, which is a total ripoff but not a surprise when dealing with the government.

The shipping company would not reclassify the bike correctly because it had electronic gears so electrification was mentioned in the product description and “e-tap” in the product name itself, which sounds electrical.  It took multiple emails and phone calls over weeks to convince the shipping company and Customs to correct the misclassification. When they finally did, Customs charged me for storage during that time!

Worst of all, the bike did not feel right to ride, but I could not figure out why. I took it to my local Trek shop (the good guy in every bike story) and after a thorough check he found that the wiring had been done incorrectly by the Trek shop in the UK!

For what it’s worth, after fixing the wiring, changing to a seat that fits me better, changing to narrower faster wheels and replacing the rigid stem with a Vecnum freeQENCE suspension stem, I love the bike. Next time I will just buy from my local Trek shop and wait.

But what if there is no local importer (Canyon) or the local importer is worse than useless (Specialized)? I have bought both of these brands and here is how it went.

Specialized Thailand – Great bikes, bad support

I wanted to buy a Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon. I sent half a dozen messages through email, facebook and Line to the Specialized shops in Thailand asking if they had one in stock and if not letting them know that I would be happy to pay a deposit and wait for it to arrive. The only replies were a couple of “can not”s, so I hit the phones.

Over the phone I got a confused run around. Things like, “call back later” and “call this other shop” trying to pass me off to be someone else’s problem. One of the shops I messaged and called was Specialized’s Thailand importer, Sport For Life. They were no help.

I also visited my local Specialized shop and they said they could not sell anything that was not already in stock. They also showed a concerning lack of knowledge of Specialized bikes when I asked them questions.

So Specialized Thailand was not going to sell me the Specialized bike I wanted but I saw it for sale at an online bike shop that would deliver anywhere in the UK. So I purchased it from the UK shop and had them send it to my shipping forward company, who then sent it to me. It should have been simple, and it was!

And I love the bike! I have done multiple 200km days on it including Khao Yai to Buriram and Ayutthaya to the other side of Kanchanaburi.

So happy ending right? Well yes except that when I upgraded to a very expensive saddle purchased from Sport For Life, and it broke within the warranty period; they would not honor the warranty!

So Specialized’s Thailand importer are no help when trying to buy a bike that is not in stock and do not honor the warranty on Specialized parts that they sell! My local Specialized bike shop is also not helpful or knowledgeable. So I can not recommend buying a Specialized bike in Thailand. Even though I love my Specialized more than any of my other bikes!

Canyon Thailand – Bad bike, bad support

Canyon has a direct to consumer sales model that cuts out the importers and bike shops. This lets them sell bikes of similar specs to Trek and Specialized for slightly lower prices. The bikes and accessories are sleek, cool, modern, minimalist and look fast.

When researching to buy a Canyon Grail CF SLX 8 in Thailand I found this Facebook page calling itself Canyon Bikes Thailand acting like an importer or at least a Canyon bike shop. I asked him the difference between buying through him and buying direct from Canyon, he said

“Actually you can buy directly but you need to taking care of the custom and the shipping process. And price will be from web price +350$ plus 37%. My price is around 17%.”

I decided to buy directly from Canyon since that is their business model. This Facebook page seemed a touch opportunistic, sort of posing as an official outlet while just making orders through the Canyon website like anyone could. But then the bike I bought directly did take a long time to get through Customs and the import duty was extremely high. Two years later that Facebook page is still helping real people get real bikes and has 18k likes. I guess he is legit and if I were to buy another Canyon bike I would do so through him.

I will most certainly not buy another Canyon bike though! I hated this bike and the lack of local service and support.

The bike had mechanical problems from day one. I contacted Canyon and they went through the basic motions of the obvious troubleshooting, but when that did not help they told me the problem was not with the Canyon bike, but rather a component from a supplier so they were not responsible and I would have to contact the component supplier for support or replacement.

The component supplier was Shimano who have no consumer facing support. So that’s that, a dead end and an unusable $7000 bike. Luckily my local Trek shop (the superhero of all my bike stories) is a Shimano retailer so he fixed the problem with the component.

I still hated the bike though because it has a stupid custom handlebar that can not be adjusted and can not take standard accessories. The bike fitter confirmed I had made a mistake. Also electronic gears suck, particularly Shimano.

So between not getting any chance to test-ride bikes, not getting any local support, and having to deal with Thai Customs (or a random bloke on Facebook), I can not recommend buying a Canyon in Thailand.

On the other hand if you are 100% sure you have to have a Canyon and there is no Trek model that could substitute, and your local bike shop can help you if it has problems then let that Facebook page get it for you with 17% import duty. Canyon makes some compelling and good value bikes.

Best Bangkok bike shops (2021) – Where to buy a road bike in Bangkok

Thinking of getting a new road bike? The cycling scene in Bangkok has been booming lately, with more and more shops popping up everywhere, especially around Skylane. To save you some time, I have put together a list of the best (foreigner-friendly) Bangkok bike shops and where you can find them.

Let’s be honest – Bangkok isn’t the best place for cycling as it’s always hot, there’s busy traffic, dirty air etc. But if you already live here, are a true cycling enthusiast and know where to ride , you can overcome the shortcomings and make it work. Now let’s take a look at bike shops in Bangkok  where you can get your new bike (or service) and I will also share a few tips that you can consider before making a decision.

  • Bangkok bike shops
  • Tips before buying

Bangkok bike shops – where you can buy a road bike in Bangkok

Some of the more affordable brands are Giant, Canyon, Focus, Merida, Trek and Cannondale , to name a few. On the other hand, more expensive models can be found at Specialized, Colnago, Pinarello, Cervelo and other brands. Many of them have some sort of presence in Bangkok in the form of brick-and-mortar retail shops located all around the city. Below is an overview of the most popular ones that are also foreigner-friendly.

You may discover that many of these websites offer limited information on the store’s selection and stock, meaning you will probably have to go there in person anyway. Being clear on the model, or at least the brand, will help save you from traversing the city and wasting valuable time.

Before you go shopping – how to buy a road bike in Bangkok

If you are new to cycling, here is a quick buying tip. Before heading to a local bike shop right away, do some research at home and ideally learn some basics about cycling ( YouTube is a great resource for this). Why? It will help you with two things. First, save money down the road because you will gain a realistic expectation of the bike prices on the market. And second, you will know an approximate component quality you should later look (I am talking particularly about drivetrain).

Price–design–quality triangle

When you get stuck in the decision-making process, your lifeline can be the trio of price-design-quality factors. In an ideal scenario, you want to consider all three when selecting your new road bike – you should like the design, the components should be of satisfactory quality and all that should fit within your budget. It wouldn’t be a good idea to buy it based on only one of these factors alone, as you are risking a compromise in other areas. For example, you may buy a beautiful bike sporting low-quality components; expensive bike that doesn’t look nice etc. You get the point.

I learned this the hard way. I knew very little about what makes road bikes good and ended up choosing mostly based on aesthetics. Result? Many bikes at a similar price point to mine have higher quality drivetrain. No, it’s not the end of the world, but a little research would have definitely steered my decision in a different direction.

The way it works in Thailand – style over substance

There is one thing to look out for in Thailand – unlike anywhere elsewhere I have ever been been, most cyclists in Bangkok (or Thailand in general) tend to gravitate towards super expensive high-end bikes you would normally only see in the professional peloton. If you have unlimited budget, buy a pro-level bike, but I believe this is an unnecessary investment for most beginners and even more advanced riders alike. Since the terrain in and around Bangkok is flat, weight of the bike is a small contributor to your overall performance. Moreover, the quality of tarmac altogether with heavy traffic makes it sometimes difficult to avoid obstacles on the road. Surely, last thing you would want is to damage your expensive carbon wheels in a pot hole. All in all, unless you are a seasoned professional or want to take your performance to the next level, buying a high-end bike just doesn’t make financial sense if you only plan to ride in Bangkok .

If we bought a bike or two bikes from you, would you deliver them (in Hua Hin)?

You should make an inquiry with the shop directly. You can speak with the owner (Khun Cake) or with the younger guy who runs the shop on a daily basis, his name is Hippie.

9 of the best hikes in Thailand

Couple with backpack hiking in rainforest

You won't be disappointed by the hiking possibilities in Thailand © fredfroese / Getty Images

With wistful, misty peaks, ancient hidden temples, otherworldly karst outcrops and dense jungle teeming with wildlife, Thailand offers a veritable feast for hikers.

Whether you want to conquer mountains, circumnavigate stunning sandy islands or simply make your way to Thailand's biggest waterfall, there's plenty to pick from. What's more, with a superb transport system , it's easy to reach most hiking trails independently – though there are plenty of excellent trekking guides available too.

So grab a heavy-duty insect repellent, pack some sunscreen and buy some leech socks – we’re about to set off. These are the best hikes in Thailand.

Scenic outlook of mountains from Tiger Cave Temple, (Wat Tham Suea), Krabi region, Thailand

1. Krabi’s Tiger Cave Temple

Best hike to a temple 1km (0.6 miles), half a day, moderate

It's a short, steep climb up to the 278m-high (912ft) limestone outcrop that overlooks Krabi Town , but hikers who successfully tackle the 1260 stairs to the summit are rewarded with access to Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple) and some stellar views. The temple takes its name from the belief that tigers once dwelled in the surrounding caves. There are no prowling big cats here now; instead, golden stupas and a large seated Buddha silently keep watch over the emerald forest and sprawling blue sea below.

Carry enough water for both the ascent and the humidity. Also, remember to wear culturally appropriate clothing (trousers or long skirts and tops that cover your shoulders) as it’s a Buddhist temple. A hiking pole can be useful – both to haul yourself up and to keep the resident monkeys at a distance.

2. Khao Yai National Park

Best hike in a national park Distances vary, 2–3 hours, easy

Established as Thailand's first national park in 1962, Khao Yai is the best place for a jungle trek near Bangkok . It boasts more than 50km (31 miles) of hiking trails that teem with macaques, gibbons, civets, barking deer and endemic bird species such as the great hornbill.

There are a couple of short, circular trails that begin near the park’s headquarters. However, as wild elephants are often spotted in the reserve, guides are required for venturing any deeper into the rainforest. Avoid visiting on weekends and public holidays as cars often fill the roads to the main sights, including the 150m-high (492ft) Haew Narok waterfall and Haew Suwat cascade, whose 25m-high (82ft) drop dazzled millions in Danny Boyle's cult film The Beach (2000).

Tourists gather on a lookout point on the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai of Thailand

3. Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

Best hike in Thailand 2.7km (1.6 miles), 2–3 hours, easy

The short Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail offers hikers a chance to see one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Thailand. Set inside the Doi Inthanon National Park near Chiang Mai , the 2200m-high (7218ft) Kew Mae Pan mountain stands only a few hundred meters south of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak at 2565m (8415ft).

The trek itself is a short circular trail with boardwalks. It begins inside a forest of mossy trees and ferns that bursts with red rhododendrons between January and March. After passing the Mae Pan waterfall, the thicket thaws into a viridian grassland and leads hikers to the Kew Mae Pan Viewpoint (also called Station 9) that dominates the whole reserve and is known for its breathtaking sunrise views. Guides are compulsory here (200B per group).

Woman exploring the bamboo forest in Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

4. Khao Sok National Park

Best jungle trek Distances vary, 2–3 hours, moderate

Skirting the southern side of Cheow Lan lake, the dense forest and towering limestone karsts of Khao Sok make the national park one of the best jungle treks in southern Thailand. With 48 mammals roaming the forests , there are plenty of excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, too. It’s gibbons, macaques and barking deer for the most part, but more elusive species such as sun bears, clouded leopards and tigers have been known to make an appearance too.

Several trails, each around 12km (7.5 miles) long, start from Khao Sok village on the southern edge of the park. They then cut through dense forest and wind past tumbling waterfalls until they reach the southern shore of the lake.

In October and December, the world’s largest (and smelliest) parasitic flower, the Rafflesia kerrii, blooms, which can be quite a sight. Post-hike, Cheow Lan's floating homestays, surrounded by fang-like karsts that rise from the water, are a popular spot to experience the lake and the northern side of the reserve.

Best island hike Distances vary, 4–6 hours, easy to moderate

Motorcycles are the only vehicles allowed on the low-key island of Koh Jum , just off of Krabi. Fortunately, the most rewarding way to explore this paradisiacal atoll is on foot. The western coast has a flat trail that flits between coves and quiet beaches for 6km (3.7 miles), but for views as far as Ko Phi-Phi (on clear days), tackle the steep climb up Khao Koh Pu hill.

There are two trailheads that lead to the 400m-high (1312ft) summit. The most direct route starts at the 2.9km sign on the circular road surrounding the hill. Navigating the empty rubber estates can be tricky, but locals will take guests up for about 1000B.

Sunrise at Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary, Phang Nga Bay

6. Um Phang

Best multiday hike Distances and times vary, moderate to hard

Overlooked for the more popular Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son provinces, Um Phang and Tak offer spectacular hiking but with a fraction of the visitors. All treks start in and around the  Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary and use the Mae Klong River as a handy artery for deeper jungle exploration.

The region is great for multiday hikes. Travelers could spend a week trawling its hills, bunking down at Karen villages and hiking south along the border with Myanmar to the Three Pagodas Pass at Sangkhlaburi, a border between Thailand and Myanmar that once was the main supply line for the construction of the Japanese Thailand–Burma railway in WWII.

However, most come to see Thailand's largest waterfall, Nam Tok Thilawsu . From the wildlife sanctuary, it’s a two-hour hike to the striking cascade through dense palm, giant bamboo and strangler figs. Its pools are suitable for swimming too. Advanced hikers and peak-busters should attempt the grueling 20km (12.5-mile) slog to Mount Kagerla, the fourth-highest peak in Thailand. However, at 1428m (4685ft), it’s not for the faint of muscle.

7. Phanom Rung

Best hike to an ancient temple 1km (0.6 miles), half a day, easy

It may not be a traditional hike, but few places are more inspiring than the Phanom Rung complex near Buriram . Standing on the rim of a dormant volcano, some 200m (656ft) above the rice fields of Isan, this 10th-century Khmer temple is built from pink sandstone.

Not only a striking archaeological site, the climb to Phanom Rung follows an ancient walkway flanked with the heads of Naga (serpent guardians), adding to its character. From the car park, the trail morphs into a stairway to the plateau where the main temple and its 15 doorways await.

A person in silhouette on the top of a mountain with the setting sun against the clouds creating a ripple effect in the sky

8. Phu Kradueng National Park

Best hike to a peak 9.5km (5.9 miles), 4–6 hours, moderate to hard

Phu Kradueng (Bell Mountain) is the main peak in the namesake national park of Loei Province in northeast Isan. The climb isn’t that taxing to begin with, but it gets tougher as hikers approach the plateau-like summit. A campsite at the top offers hikers the chance to spend the night and rent bicycles for those wanting to explore the area at their own pace.

Locals typically complete the climb in a day, but staying over at the top affords hikers the chance to see a stunning sunset over the Mak Dook cliffs. Sunrise over the Nok Aen cliffs is equally compelling. The descent is hard on the knees; borrow one of the walking sticks on offer.

9. Bangkok Phra Pradaeng Loop

Best hike near Bangkok 12km (7.5 miles), 3 hours, easy

Known as the “ Green Lung ” of Bangkok, this walking trail and bicycle path starts at the Bang Krachao Pier (also known as Bang Kachao) and has been protected by long-standing laws prohibiting the construction of tall buildings in this area. Hiking out here is a rare opportunity to see how the Thai capital looked a few decades ago.

Most of the route follows suspended pathways built above a mangrove swamp with a number of homes built on stilts. Try to hike on a Sunday when the Talad Bang Nam Phueng market sells delicious street food and all sorts of goods, from pearl earrings to coconut pancakes.

Phu Kradueng (Bell Mountain) is the main peak in the namesake national park of Loei Province in northeast Isan. The climb isn't that taxing to begin with, but it gets tougher as hikers approach the plateau-like summit.
