Mass Assentation at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

1. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Each October, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta transforms the skies of New Mexico’s Rio Grande Valley into an explosion of color, with nearly 600 hot air balloons from all over the world.

Started with just 13 balloons in 1972, this famous festival has grown into a 9-day event covering 365 acres, making it the largest ballooning event in the world. It’s also one of the most photograph festivals in the USA.

There’s a tremendous amount of music and entertainment across three stages, with activities including balloon races,  chainsaw carving competitions, skydiving shows, fireworks, and more.

If you go, be sure to start your festival visit early, because the magic starts at 6:30 am with the Morning Glow.

Imagine pre-dawn darkness and, as the light slowly starts to illuminates the mountains to the east, you see what looks like large fireflies. First one, then two, then five, until the dawn sky is filled with lighted balloon silhouettes.

At 7:00 am, get your cameras ready for the main event, the Mass Ascension of Hot Air Balloons. The 2021 festival runs October 2 through 1o.   -Mary Gabbett of Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

2. Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (Manchester, Tennessee)

Held every year since 2002 in the tiny town of Manchester TN (south of Nashville), Bonnaroo may not be as large a festival as Coachella, or as iconic a brand as Lollapalooza. But it still ranks among the best music festivals in the US.

Why? To quote its tagline, Bonnaroo features, “Thousands of happy campers. Hundreds of acres of Tennessee nature. 150 epic performances. 10+ Stages of music. Four of the best days ever.”

We also  love Bonnaroo’s many  sustainability initiatives , which include annual sustainability reports, the Clean Vibes Trading Post, and Planet Roo (a haven for environmental consciousness and education). Plus $1 from every ticket goes to eco-friendly efforts!

The awesome American music festival, which was modeled after iconic festivals like Monterey Pop and Woodstock, is held every June on a 700-acre farm. The 2021 edition’s big name acts included Foo Fighters, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tyler the Creator, Primus, Mastodon, and countless others.

In addition to music and camping , you can also find arts and crafts, food and drinks, a comedy tent, cinema tent, Ferris wheel, silent disco, parades, and yoga. Their unique “Campground Plazas” also offer karaoke, late night parties, celebrity appearances, and more!   –by Bret Love of Green Global Travel

Burning Man Festival in Black Rock Desert, NV USA

3. Burning Man (Black Rock Desert, Nevada)

For one week each year, the massive dry lake bed of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada is transformed into “Black Rock City.” This “city” is filled with camps and incredible art installations, which are constructed and deconstructed every year for arguably the most unique festival in the US– Burning Man.

Burning Man began as a rather small affair on Baker Beach in San Francisco back in 1986. A group of friends had a massive bonfire to burn a 9-foot wooden statue that they named “the man.”

It may have represented Corporate America, societal norms, or a past love… no one really knows for sure. But today that group of friends has grown to 80,000 people, and “the man” has grown to some 40 feet tall!

There are only two things available for purchase at Burning Man– ice and coffee . So you’ll need to pack everything else that you’ll need to survive for the week, including  camping tents and water. However, the festival has a “gifting environment,” so if you forget something, chances are you’ll have no problem getting it from someone else.

During your week at Burning Man, you’ll take on your own “Burner” persona, which is essentially anything you want it to be. Burners are encouraged to dress and express themselves however they would like, without fear of judgement.

The 10 principles of Burning Man include things like radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, and radical self-expression. And you’ll experience all of these and more during your “burn.”

Getting tickets to Burning Man is no easy feat, as there are far more people vying for tickets than the actual number of tickets sold. But it’s absolutely worth the effort, as Burning Man is undoubtedly one of the most unique and amazing festivals in the world and an experience of a lifetime!  – by Val & Nick Wheatley of Wandering Wheatleys

Biltmore Estates

4. Christmas at Biltmore Estate (Asheville, North Carolina)

One of our favorite North Carolina Christmas events , Christmas at Biltmore gives Asheville NC visitors an opportunity to see the largest private home in America while its halls are decked with beautiful  Christmas decorations .

Christmas Eve of 2021 will mark the 126th anniversary of the year George Vanderbilt first invited family and friends to the Biltmore House. The attraction will honor the occasion with its annual Christmas Daytime Celebration tours.

Tour packages may include access to the Antler Hill Village and winery, an expert guide with special knowledge about Vanderbilt family history, and VIP access to parts of the Biltmore House that aren’t explored during the main tour.

They also offer Candlelight Christmas Evenings that show the property in a completely different light. The Estate is lit up by winkling Christmas lights , candles, and fireplaces, casting a warm glow that’s rich with holiday spirit.

Guests can explore the massive mansion via self-guided or expert-led tours, and enjoy fine holiday dining (with complimentary wine tastings).

This is just one of many reasons why we consider Asheville one of the best places to spend Christmas in the USA !   –by Bret Love of Green Global Travel

Fantasy Fest, Key West Florida USA

5. Fantasy Fest (Key West, Florida)

Widely regarded as one of the most fun festivals in the USA, the 10-day Fantasy Festival in Key West, Florida dates back to 1979.

Fantasy Fest was created by locals who noticed that Key West was not very busy in October (their shoulder season for tourism ) , and wanted to entice more people to visit. Today, Fantasy Fest has become a Halloween event that is held in the last week of October.

So what makes it so good? The party atmosphere of Fantasy Fest has been compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnival in the Caribbean Islands . There are parades, masquerade balls, costume contests, and 60+ official parties!

Each year there is a unique theme, such as Space, Broadway, House of Horror, Circus, Villains, etc. It is estimated that over 75,000 people come out to experience this adult-themed Halloween extravaganza.

The weather is still warm enough at this time of year that you won’t be chilly in your costume. But you’ll also be cool enough to relax and have a good time while experiencing all the fun that Key West has to offer.

Long story short, this is the perfect festival in Florida to let your inner free spirit fly!   –by   Victoria Yore of FloridaTrippers

Gasparilla Pirate Festival, Tampa FL USA

6. Gasparilla Pirate Festival (Tampa, Florida)

Since 1904, revelers in Tampa, Florida have been celebrating the plundering of their city by the Spanish pirate Jose Gaspar and his marauding band of buccaneers at the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.

Held every year in January, the event begins when a huge Spanish galleon arrives in Tampa Bay, escorted by hundreds of small ships . The pirates ransack the city, only to share the spoils with locals along a 5-mile-long parade route.

Firing thousands of blank shots in the air, the pirates (along with a 100+ floats and a few marching bands) throw handfuls of gold coins, plastic beads, and other treats to the crowd. It’s one of the liveliest festivals in southwest Florida !

Interestingly, while the legend of Jose Gaspar has been at the heart of this event for more than a century, Gaspar is actually just a fictional character made for tourism. Still, it’s more fun to believe the mythology is real!

In 2022, the Gasparilla Pirate Festival will be held on Saturday, January 29. – by Lori Sorrentino of Travlinmad

Lilac Festival Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA

7. Lilac Festival (Mackinac Island, Michigan)

Every year, people from around the world flock to Mackinac Island, Michigan for the Lilac Festival . The first festival was held in 1949 by year-round residents of the island, and the annual tradition continues today.

The timing of the festival depends on the blooming of the lilacs, but it is generally held during the first two weeks of June. The Michigan weather is perfect at this time of year, with low humidity and an  island breeze .

The island becomes incredibly fragrant, with a number of activities taking place and souvenirs such as lilac fudge available for purchase.

Some of the fun events you’ll find at the festival include the Coronation of the Lilac Queen, lilac planting, musical performances, hikes, tours, cannon firing, the “History of Mackinac Island” Grand Parade, and the award ceremony.

Mardi_Gras_Indians on Super Sunday in New_Orleans

8. Mardi Gras (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Mardi Gras in New Orleans (a.k.a. Fat Tuesday) is kinda like the United States’ version of Carnival. But some historians insist that it was actually the city of Mobile, Alabama that started the annual tradition in the 1700s.

Although the bacchanalian celebration is held every year on the day before Ash Wednesday, the festivities in NOLA usually last for months.

It begins with social events in November, private balls held on Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve , and parades and more private balls throughout January and early February.

Getting invited to these private events isn’t easy. But if you know someone (or have lots of money), MOM’s Ball and   Orpheuscapade Ball are frequently ranked among the best. If you love music, check out the annual Galactic concert at Tipitina’s on Lundi Gras (the day before Mardi Gras).

When the big day arrives, it’s best to plan what you want to see and do in advance, before the parade of beads, boobs, and booze begins. Longtime locals love the Krewe of Muses Parade, the Rex & Zulu Parade, and the Krewe of St. Anne and Krewe of Julu Parades.

But, for our money, it doesn’t get any better than watching the Mardi Gras Indians parade in Treme, New Orleans !

Ho'ike night at the Merrie Monarch Festivals Hilo, HI USA

9. Merrie Monarch Festival (Hilo, Hawaii)

One of the most cherished cultural festivals in Hawaii, the Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long celebration held annually in Hilo, Hawaii .

Festival events include Hula demonstrations, art fairs , cultural shows, a major international hula competition, and an elaborate hula parade through downtown Hilo.

Not only has the Merrie Monarch Festival helped to revitalize the town, but it’s also fostering a Hawaiian cultural renaissance on the islands . After a devastating tsunami on Hawaii’s Big Island in 1961 completely ruined the local economy, the local government created its first major hula event in 1963.

The focus on Hawaiian dance, music, storytelling, arts and crafts , and food made the event an instant hit with both locals and visitors alike.

Held the week after Easter , the Merrie Monarch Festival capitalizes on the beauty of springtime in Hilo, when everything is blooming and fresh. Fans of Polynesian culture from all around the world come to Hilo to take part in all of the pageantry offered by the week-long celebration.

If you plan on visiting Hilo during the festival, you’ll want to book your travel, hotels, and even restaurant reservations a year in advance!  – by Noel of This Hawaii Life

National Cherry Blossom Festival, Washington DC USA

10. National Cherry Blossom Festival (Washington, DC)

“Paint the city pink” is the best way to describe the opening of the three-week National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC. In 2021, the hashtag was #StepIntoSpring.

The main avenues on the National Mall in DC fill up with the pink road signs announcing the festival. DC neighborhoods such as Georgetown also offer festival activities and signage.

Tight buds on the Yoshino cherry trees lining the Tidal Basin begin to open into pink-tinged white blossoms. When 70% of the area’s cherry trees fully blossom, the city reaches peak bloom.

Activities abound during the festival in typical, non-pandemic years. Unfortunately, the public festival events were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID concerns.

In 2021, the festival introduced two new activities. “Art In Bloom” sent people hunting for cherry blossom sculptures hidden around the city, while “Petal Porch Parades” encouraged visitors to explore the countless cherry blossom decorations in different DC neighborhoods .

Hopefully, the big National Cherry Blossom Parade, Blossom Kite Festival, Petalpalooza, and Pink Tie Party will all return in spring 2022. The ANA Stage typically presents performances that demonstrate cross-cultural exchange through a dynamic mix of American, Japanese , and other cultural performing arts.

If you want to attend next year, the festival will be held March 20 through April 17, 2022. The parade will be held on Saturday, April 9. You can also participate remotely by watching the blossoms live at #BloomCam. This is a 24/7 live, real-time view of the cherry trees on the Tidal Basin.   –by Terri of FemaleSoloTrek

Oktoberfest Parade in Helen Georgia

11. Oktoberfest (Helen, Georgia)

Located just 90 minutes north of Atlanta, Helen, Georgia  is a charming little mountain town with an unusual appeal. All of the buildings (and many of the local restaurants ) were designed with inspiration from the Bavarian Alps!

With that in mind, it makes sense that Helen is home to longest-running Oktoberfest festival in the US. The 2021 marks the event’s 50th year, after it was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID concerns.

Hosted by the Helen Chamber of Commerce, this year’s Oktoberfest at the Helen Festhalle will begin on September 9 and run through November 7.

This is the ultimate annual celebration of Helen’s Alpine inspiration, with oodles of oom-pah bands, bratwurst, boot-sized beers, Lederhosen, and lovely lasses in Dirndls.

The Festhalle offers rows of family-style tables where visitors can eat, drink, and be merry as they listen to German polka bands from all across the country. If the music moves you, you can always grab a partner and hit the dance floor!   –by Bret Love of Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide

Plano Balloon Festival in Plano, TX USA

12. Plano Balloon Festival (Plano, Texas)

The Plano Balloon Festival is one of the oldest hot air balloon festivals in America, running for over 40 years. This family-friendly event in Plano, Texas  runs for 3 days over a weekend every September.

The festival kicks off on Friday evening, with around 30 balloons flying up in the air for a 1-hour ride. It’s an amazing sight to see those huge balloons covering the sky, adding a splash of color to the golden hour before sunset.

The interesting part is that there are balloons of varied shapes and sizes, including monsters, Mickey Mouse, a tortoise, and many more. Balloons fly from the park on Friday at 6:00PM, Saturday at 7:00AM and 6:00PM, and Sunday at 7:00AM (weather permitting, of course).

At the end of every evening, visitors are allowed to see the balloons up close, take photos, interact with the balloon owners, and witness the must-see glow-in-the-dark balloons. There’s also a fine display of fireworks on Saturday night.

Besides the balloons, there are many more activities for families and kids, including live musical performances, a kids’ play corner, craft-making zone, and food vendors. Visitors can even book hot air balloon rides for an additional charge. – by Neha Kulshrestha of TravelMelodies

Budweiser Horses Savannah, GA St Patrick's Day

13. St Patrick’s Day Parade (Savannah, Georgia)

St Patrick’s Day in Savannah GA draws people from far and wide just to partake in the festivities. Every year on March 17, a big parade goes around the coastal city’s downtown area.

The city gets so busy that, if you plan to just do a day trip, you’ll need to allot 2 hours just to find parking and get into the city before the parade starts.

The biggest lots are available in Hutchinson Island, just across the river, which is accessible by taking the Savannah Belles ferry. Note that the lines to take the ferry are extremely long, and should also be a factor when planning your trip.

Savannah locals stake their claim to the best parade spots early on and make a whole day out of it. They often place tarps and chairs before the sunrise, and blast their music while having a good time.

Local restaurants are extremely busy during this time, so reservations are a must. You’ll need to plot where you want to watch the parade in advance so that you don’t end up walking around aimlessly, wondering where the parade is going to go. For reference, there is a map available online.

After the parade, walk over to Forsyth Park, where the water fountain is dyed green. With lively Irish folk music artists and art, it’s a fun way to experience Irish culture in the southeastern US.

Note that hotels are booked a year in advance, and prices are ridiculously expensive. But it’s still one of those US festivals you should do once in your lifetime, and the festivities are comparable to those that are done in Ireland .

Scandinavian Festival in Junction City, OR

14. Scandinavian Festival (Junction City, Oregon)

The Scandinavian Festival occurs every year in August in Junction City, Oregon, a mostly Danish-heritage farming town located about 15 miles north of Eugene.

Junction City is a cultural hub of Scandinavian heritage in the U.S., and this annual four-day festival has celebrated Scandinavian culture and crafts since 1961.

The fair stresses authenticity and offers free admission. Visitors get a chance to see live trolls, dance performances, and cultural craft demonstrations, and many attendees don their own Scandinavian dress and costumes.

Traditional foods on offer include aebleskivers and Norwegian meatballs. If you’re lucky, kringle, Swedish visitor cake, and Norwegian apple cake might also be on the menu.

Taking advantage of the area’s generally good weather, there’s also a beer garden with live oompah bands that provides refreshment and entertainment.

Special displays include a life-sized Swedish wooden Dala Horse, a Viking ship, a replica of the “Little Mermaid” statue in Copenhagen, and an authentic 1904 Finnish  locomotive. Additionally, there are usually several historical house museums open.   –by Carole Terwilliger Meyers of TravelsWithCarole

SXSW Festival Austin Texas USA

15. South By Southwest/SXSW (Austin, Texas)

South By Southwest (or SXSW, as it is more commonly known) is a conglomeration of famous festivals held annually in Austin, Texas since 1987.

It was originally just a music festival, but today there are actually three main parts. In addition to the music festival, SXSW also offers a film festival and an interactive tech festival.

These influential Austin festivals last 10 days and are typically held in March, when the weather in Texas is still relatively cool and comfortable.

You can buy tickets to individual SXSW events, or you can purchase a 10-day badge that usually starts at $500 and goes up to $1000+. The badges are themed by which of the different festivals you want to experience.

The badges help you skip the lines and come with bonus perks, but are not mandatory. If you want to attend an event without a badge, you need to RSVP in advance. If there are too many people, the event will be closed to attendees.

The goal of SXSW is to help creative people achieve their goal and celebrate the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture. In our opinion, attending this cultural festival is one of the most memorable things to do in Texas !  – by Victoria Yore of SouthernTrippers; lead photo of Burning Man by Val & Nick Wheatley of  Wandering Wheatleys

These are the best festivals in the US you’ll want to add to your bucket list.

Festivals are an amazing way to experience something special among thousands of people and yet still have personal memories to take away.

As a shorty, festivals don’t tend to appeal to me especially if involves huge crowds and my face being smeared against sweaty backs.

This past year, however, we made a few exceptions, and I’ll have to admit that I can see why people find these shared experiences so magical.

Essential TIps for Attending Festivals in the US

Each festival has its own set of tips, but we’ll go over some overall rules that we use in any group events.

  • Dress in Layers.  Festivals usually last all day (if not longer) and temperatures change. Layers help you adjust easily to stay comfortable.
  • Stay Charged.  Don’t let your phone die. We love  this charger  because we can charge both our phones at the same tie.
  • Prepare for Any Weather.  We’ve been at multiple festivals where it rained. If there’s a chance of rain, have a raincoat with you. Check out our favorite travel jackets .
  • Check the Rules Ahead of Time.  Each festival will have rules for what you can bring in. Don’t get caught bringing something that’s not allowed.
  • Get Tickets Early.  The festivals we listed here are extremely popular and will sell out quickly, a lot of times on the date the tickets go on sale. Sign up for newsletters to know when tickets go on sale.
  • Arrive Early.  No matter how organized a festival is, it still takes a lot of time to park with all the crowds.
  • Check Back.  Be sure to check their websites for the most up-to-date information multiple times in case anything about the festival changes.
  • Want to know  what to wear to the airport ? These are  our ideal airport outfits .
  • Carry on essentials  to improve your next flight.
  • Get comprehensive insurance for your trip.
  • Download these helpful language apps .
  • Arrange a rental car for your trip.
  • Get airport lounge access .
  • Buy a travel charger to keep your devices charged.
  • Get a new backpack for your trip.
  • Pack the appropriate shoes for your trip.

The 26 best fall festivals in the u.s..

Explore festivities ideal for maximizing the sweater weather season.

The Best Fall Festivals in the U.S.

From finding the perfect Halloween pumpkin to listening to the powerful bugle of an elk, these fall festivals have something for everyone to enjoy.

Fall brings relief from months of sweltering heat, as people are eager to don their flannel shirts and sweaters to greet the cooler temperatures and crisp air. The season also ushers in plenty of once-a-year activities from apple picking and pumpkin carving to cider sipping and leaf peeping .

With autumn traditionally known as a time to celebrate the harvesting of crops – including grapes, cranberries, apples, squash and pumpkins – people flock to farms and orchards across the country to pick their own produce and take family photos with farm animals and scarecrows. Though the season is short, with most events happening in October, this list is chock full of entertaining fall festivals, events and activities to keep your weekends filled with fun.

Sever's Fall Festival in Shakopee, Minnesota: Sept. 16 to Oct. 29

Having taken place for more than a quarter-century, this event is held on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the fall. Located about 35 miles south of Minneapolis , Sever's Fall Festival is home to one of the country's original corn stalk mazes – a creation that continues to be one of its most popular autumn attractions, featuring an intricate new design that's cut by hand every year. Participants who successfully complete the annual Corn Maze Challenge are entered into a draw for cash prizes.

Other unique attractions and activities include a corn pit playground, straw sculptures, zip lines and a petting zoo. For an additional fee you can also play with a pumpkin blaster (imagine a cannon, but with pumpkins) and take a ride on a pony. A full schedule of live shows and entertainment is typically also offered, ranging from pig races and kids dance parties to magic shows and live music.

Ample concessions provide harvest-inspired refreshments like kettle corn, funnel cakes, apple fritters, smoked meats, wood-fired pizzas and bratwurst. Apples are another reason to attend this festival: Visitors will have their pick of farm-fresh, chemical-free varieties like Honeycrisp and Snowsweet at the on-site farm stand.

To wind down after all the excitement, consider a stay at the Hampton Inn Minneapolis/Shakopee, located less than 10 miles north of the event site near downtown Shakopee.

Duluth Fall Festival in Duluth, Georgia: Sept. 30 to Oct. 1

The 40th annual end-of-summer celebration takes place in downtown Duluth on the last weekend in September. A true community affair, this free event is run by a team of 300-plus volunteers, and all proceeds from the festival – which draws crowds of more than 100,000 people each year – go toward improving Duluth's historic downtown and helping other local nonprofits. To help manage traffic, several park-and-ride shuttle locations are scattered around town for ease of access.

The weekend kicks off with a parade on Saturday morning featuring local dance troupes, marching bands, antique cars, fire trucks and more. Afterward, attendees can roam the more than 180 artisan vendors selling arts and crafts or catch a show at two on-site stages featuring 20-plus scheduled performances throughout the weekend. Street performers also roam the festival for some spontaneous fun.

Food is another main attraction, and here you'll find a mix of Southern specialties and classic fall festival fare, from biscuits and alligator to candy apples and funnel cakes. Kiddos can experience rides and games just for them, and anyone can enjoy the on-site carnival. Sunday starts with the Duluth Donut Dash 5k race, where awards are presented to top finishers across 15 age groups, followed by a worship service on the Duluth Town Green.

For out-of-town visitors, consider booking a room at the Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Duluth Downtown hotel, which is located adjacent to all the action downtown.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati in Cincinnati: Sept. 14-17

More than 700,000 people descend on downtown Cincinnati each year for the country's largest Oktoberfest. Ongoing since 1976 and now occupying six city blocks near the banks of the Ohio River, the festival typically features fun such as the Running of the Wieners, where around 100 dachshunds race each other in hot dog costumes, or the bratwurst eating championship. Other entertaining activities include the World's Largest Chicken Dance and plenty of live music running the gamut from polka to rock.

After working up an appetite, eat your fill of tasty German specialties like potato pancakes, sausages, sauerkraut, soft pretzels, strudel, cream puffs and pickled pigs feet. Wash it all down with a stein of German-style suds from an array of breweries large and small, including craft options from locals like Taft's Ale House, Moerlein Lager House and Rhinegeist Brewery.

Parking is available at numerous nearby public parking lots and garages, or you can book a room at the AC Hotel by Marriott Cincinnati at The Banks, located just around the corner from the event site and right by the river.

Elk Fest in Estes Park, Colorado: Sept. 30 to Oct. 1

While most locales usher in autumn with pumpkins and cider, in the Rocky Mountain region the season is all about elk. Located near the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park , about 70 miles northwest of Denver , the town of Estes Park holds a free annual festival the first weekend of October to celebrate the elk mating season – also known as the elk rut – which corresponds with the arrival of cooler weather and vibrant foliage. At this time of year, locally referred to as "Elktober," you can see these majestic creatures in the national park or even in town (but be sure to keep your distance, as the male elk, called bulls, can be aggressive).

In addition to photographing the impressive antlers on the bulls and listening for their mating calls – a haunting sound known as a bugle – other Elk Fest offerings include live music, food trucks, a variety of vendors, a presentation of live raptors, Native American performances and more. A bugling contest lets festivalgoers attempt to imitate an elk's sounds using a bugle tube. Leaf peepers at Elk Fest will be delighted by the brilliant orange of the town's aspen trees.

An overnight stay at the iconic Stanley Hotel is a must for its history and charm; it's considered one of the country's most haunted hotels . Other lodging options in Estes Park range from mountain cabins to campgrounds.

Haunted by a dark history that earned it the nickname "Witch City," Salem tends to celebrate its spookiness year-round – but even more so during the month of October, when hundreds of thousands of people arrive in town for the Salem Haunted Happenings celebration. This annual fall festival kicks off at the start of October and pays homage to the harvest season and accompanying pagan holiday of Samhain.

Special family-friendly events like costume parties, magic shows and movie nights occur around town throughout the month; those fascinated by the occult will also find thrills in the form of psychic readings and ghost tours. Salem Haunted Happenings also includes events like the free Salem Zombie Walk for all ages. The Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, set for Oct. 5, will feature a stream of performers and floats around the downtown district.

Attendees are encouraged to use the free satellite parking and shuttles provided on certain weekends to access festival events. Or, you can book a stay at the historic Hawthorne Hotel and park in its complimentary lots. The hotel hosts a coveted costume ball on Halloween weekend, but beware: Hawthorne's rooms, many of which overlook the Salem Common, can fill up very early for Haunted Happenings, so the hotel recommends planning your October visit far in advance.

What's better than a scenic drive through the countryside on a crisp autumn day? Well, driving through a countryside known for its historic covered bridges adds bucolic charm and artistic interest to the mix. Originally created to celebrate and promote the region's history and heritage, the annual festival features a farmers market, tractor rides, a car show, a horseshoe tournament and a parade. For an additional fee, the local rotary group provides two-hour guided bus tours of the famous bridges, several of which appear on the National Register of Historic Places.

Expect dozens of live musical acts spread across four stages, typically with a range of genres like rock, country, ska and reggae. • Popular festivals & events in America

In a country as big and diverse as the United States , there's no shortage of incredible festivals and events to work your way through. From vibrant Pride marches and world-class music festivals to the parades, parties and pizazz of New Orleans's Mardi Gras, here are some of the USA's most popular festivals and cultural events.

1. Pride New York

The Big Apple is one of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly cities in the world, so it’s only fitting that it also hosts one of the world’s largest and liveliest Pride celebrations . As well as a huge Pride march through the bustling streets of Manhattan, you can also enjoy the PrideFest street fair, a two-day music festival known as Pride Island, vibrant rooftop parties, a political rally, and so much more.

2. Burning Man

If you ask people around the world for one festival they’d love to tick off their bucket list, there’s a good chance they’ll say Burning Man. Ticket prices are high and the logistics of getting there can be tricky, but this unique nine-day gathering in Nevada ’s Black Rock Desert is like no other. Based on the theme of radical self-expression, the festival is cashless and trading is used as a form of currency – meaning festivalgoers must bring all essential supplies, as well as something to share or trade with others (this could include physical items of other offerings, like a performance). Expect to see art, music, liberal clothing, nudity, body painting, tarot, dance, and everything else in between. On day nine, the ‘Burning Man’ statue is set alight to signify the end of the gathering.

3. New Orleans Mardi Gras

For around one month every year, the energetic streets of New Orleans come even more alive with a chaotic collision of lively music, colourful costumes, carnival masks, spicy food and joyful people at Mardi Gras. There are many parties and masquerade balls throughout the month, but the main event is called Fat Tuesday (‘Mardi gras’ means ‘fat Tuesday’ in French ), which takes place on the last day of the carnival. Fat Tuesday always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday (or the first day of Lent), and is traditionally a chance to have one last hurrah before fasting begins in the lead-up to Easter.

4. Coachella

Every year tens of thousands of people flock to one of the world’s most iconic music festivals in California . The Coachella lineup features some of the world’s biggest bands and musicians, as well as a whole bunch of workshops, art installations and quirky camping areas to add to the fun. Previous lineups have featured Radiohead, Tame Impala, Billie Eilish, Beyonce and other big names.

5. EDC Music Festival

Just when you think Las Vegas couldn't get any flashier or more fun, the EDC Musical Festival goes and proves you wrong. The three-day festival is jam-packed with world-renowned DJs and artists that'll have you dancing the days away, as well as impressive LED installations, glow-in-the-dark superstructures and funky performers who'll keep you entertained for hours.

6. Miami F1 Grand Prix

Crank your excitement levels all the way up at the Miami Formula One Grand Prix. Watch the race from the stands, meet your favourite drivers, walk the iconic pit lane, have a couple of drinks in the newly created Hard Rock Beach Cafe, and so much more at this adrenaline-pumping, fun-filled event. Whether you’re into racing cars or not, the Miami F1 Grand Prix promises to be a corker.

7. Bonnaroo Music Festival

Located in the heart of Tennessee, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is a mecca for music and art lovers of all kinds. The word ‘bonnaroo’ is a slang term for ‘good stuff’ in Creole, and it’s an aptly fitting festival name when the lineup is so eclectic. Think 150+ musicians from hip hop to jazz, and gospel to electronic, immersive art installations and workshops ranging from yoga to watercolour painting.

8. BottleRock Music Festival

BottleRock is a music festival with a twist thanks to the event's location in the beautiful Napa Valley. Mixing the region's best drops with international music stars was always going to be a recipe for success. There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained over this three-day event including a culinary stage with live cooking demos, an onsite spa, and various art installations.

9. Cinco de Mayo

Colourful street parades, tasty tacos and tequila? Don't mind if we do!  Cinco de Mayo is an annual festival celebrated on 5 May to mark the day when an army of 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated the French Empire in the Battle of Puebla in  Mexico . It also celebrates the overall awesomeness that is Mexican culture. While you'll find festivities in Puebla City, there are also heaps of festivities in cities throughout the States, particularly around the US-Mexico border.

10. Jazz & Heritage Festival

Celebrate all things jazz and culture at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. In fact, you’ll be treated to a lot more than just jazz with 12 stages of music ranging from Cajun to gospel and Caribbean to funk. If you can’t make the festival, fear not. You could always join us on a New Orleans Cocktails and Jazz tour to uncover some of the city’s best jazz bars and local musical stars.

Though the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is keeping travel plans in flux, the US has finally reopened to vaccinated travelers , so this year could be a great time to plan a trip. Here's what's going on from month to month, so you can pack the most into your visit.

Utah’s Sundance Film Festival was originally intended to be in-person in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance Mountain Resort January 20 to 30, however the festival has announced it will now be online.

But if you’re in the vicinity of Utah, the state’s slopes are some of the country’s best, and whether you’re a novice skier or a semi-pro, there’s no time like January to check them out. Other activities in this winter wonderland include snowboarding, tubing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even stand-up paddleboard yoga classes – in a crater.

A roaring red dragon at the Chinese New Years parade in New York City

In 2022, the Lunar New Year falls on February 1, and in Chinatowns across the country, there are festivities planned to welcome in the Year of the Tiger. After last year’s hiatus, San Francisco’s Chinese New Year Parade – an event dating back to the 1860s, the largest of its kind outside of Asia, per the tourism board – returns on February 19. There will be COVID-19 protocols in place for staff, volunteers and members of the parade, who must be fully vaccinated and masked to participate.

Mardi Gras was a reimagined affair in 2021, with homes decorated to resemble floats and scavenger hunts for beads and other throws instead of in-person gatherings of any kind. In 2022, however, the parades will be back, New Orleans's mayor confirmed in late December – albeit with shorter routes due to “overstretched first responders,” per NOLA.com . A few krewes are set to begin rolling in January, but the bulk of the action is in February with parades throughout the month, culminating in Fat Tuesday on March 1.

March boasts some marquee events – St Patricks Day on the 17th, marked with giant parades in New York, Boston and Chicago; the SXSW festival in Austin , Texas, this year scheduled for March 11 to 20; and the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC, normally peaking around the end of the month.

With warm days offering a respite from still-blustery conditions in other parts of the US, Florida is a go-to winter destination for snowbirds across the globe, and in March 2022, several new attractions and amenities are coming to the state. In Orlando, there’s Disney World’s hotly anticipated Star Wars-themed hotel , Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser – an immersive, all-inclusive experience on the starship Halcyon, slated to open March 1.

In other theme park news, a rollercoaster – billed as North America’s tallest hybrid coaster and the world’s fastest and steepest – is set to debut in March at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay . Called Iron Gwazi, it will reach heights of 206 feet with a 91-degree drop, hitting top speeds of 76 miles per hour.

For other out-of-this-world entertainment, head to Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, where a 50,000-square-foot, multi-level attraction called Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex blasts off this month. You’ll find space-flown artifacts, plus full-scale models and replicas; interactive displays on satellites and space probes; an “airport of the future” where you can take a journey by way of a 4D flying theater, and a rooftop venue for launch and landing viewings as well as special events.

Native American dancers dressed in traditional feathered costumes

2021’s virtual race was delayed by six months, but the Boston Marathon returns this year to its springtime schedule, welcoming runners from around the world on April 18. The 2022 race will have a field size of 30,000 participants, and all athletes must be fully vaccinated to participate, the Boston Athletic Association announced in November.

A giant Native American powwow featuring music, food, crafts and the crowning of Miss Indian World, Albuquerque’s Gathering of Nations takes place April 28 to 30. Browse the Indian Traders Market, check out the Horse & Rider Parade, and catch one of the 3000 traditional singers and dancers scheduled to perform.

At the end of the month, it’s back to New Orleans for Jazz Fest, a two-weekend event featuring world-class music from local musicians and internationally known acts alike, this year slated for April 29 to May 8.

Up in Memphis, the Beale Street Music Festival takes over the fairgrounds from April 29 to May 1, a change of scenery due to construction at its usual venue, Tom Lee Park . The recently announced lineup includes heavy hitters like the Foo Fighters, Lil Wayne and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Commemorating Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo is more of a phenomenon in the US than it is south of the border, with rowdy festivities that seem far removed from a holiday that pays tribute to Mexican resilience and strength. For a more culturally conscious experience, consider the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Corona, California , on May 7, a community-focused fiesta with a parade and fundraising efforts that go toward local scholarships.

New York is a great place to be in springtime, and this season sees the opening of a new luxury hotel in Manhattan. On West 28th Street, the 250-room Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, is a new build with sweeping views of the city, especially from the rooftop bar, which, like the property’s other eateries, comes courtesy of chef José Andrés.

From there, it’s one block east and a straight shot up Fifth Avenue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the second part of the Costume Institute’s exhibit, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, opens in the American Wing on May 7. As with other indoor venues in the city, proof of vaccination is required for entry, and as of late December, the museum’s capacity is limited, so be prepared to wait to get in.

On the other side of the country, San Francisco is getting 14 acres of new national parkland, built on top of the Presidio Parkway highway tunnels. From the team behind NYC’s High Line, the Presidio Tunnel Tops will open this month, with paths and gardens as well as picnic grounds, a nature center, a plaza with concessions, a “natural playscape”, and scenic overlooks offering views of both the city proper and the Golden Gate Bridge – just in time for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s 50th anniversary later in the year.

Two hands make a heart sign in front of a rainbow flag at the Pride parade in New York.

Events are busting out all over this month, with music fests and Pride celebrations taking center stage. San Francisco’s Pride – happening this year on June 25 and 26 – is perhaps the country’s most popular, but there are big turnouts in New York and Chicago as well, with marches and parades in both cities scheduled for June 26 and other activities slated for the days prior.

In Tennessee, Nashville’s CMA Music Festival is slated for June 9 to 12, and Bonnaroo is set for the following weekend, about an hour southeast of the state capital in Manchester. Lineups are yet to be announced, but expect plenty of bold-faced names headlining both.

In early June, the Chicago Blues Festival – one of the biggest free blues fests in the world – descends upon Grant Park, while in southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, the 49th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival is scheduled for June 16 to 19.

On June 18, when the Mermaid Parade rolls through New York’s Coney Island, hundreds of scantily clad merpeople will take to the neighborhood’s aptly named ocean-oriented streets for a kitschy, artsy extravaganza dating to 1983.

The next day, look for Juneteenth celebrations across the country. A new federal holiday as of 2021, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, June 19 marks “the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas – the last Confederate state to practice slavery – in 1865,” Travis Levius writes for Lonely Planet. “[It’s] been a significant holiday for many Black Americans for over 155 years and is often celebrated with cookouts, festivals, church events and storytelling.”

The Fourth of July is summer’s marquee holiday, and there are big bashes from coast to coast, in major metropolitan areas and tiny towns alike. In DC, the National Park Service hosts a spectacular fireworks display on the National Mall, beginning at 9:09pm and launching from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Snag a spot on the mall near the Washington Monument or the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, or head across the Potomac to the Iwo Jima Memorial , which offers a good vantage point.

Later in the month, San Diego ’s international Comic-Con is July 21 to 24, and in addition to the usual slate of panels and  screenings, attendees will be able to check out the new Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park , a three-floor, 25,000-square-foot display with a 4K theater and rotating exhibits dedicated to comics, graphic novels, and pop art. Phase one of the museum opened this fall, but the grand opening is in July, when fans flood into town for the convention.

From July 28 to 31, the Lollapalooza rockstravaganza touches down in Chicago’s Grant Park. 2022 lineups are TBD, but last year’s headliners included Miley Cyrus, Tyler, the Creator, Journey, Post Malone and Megan Thee Stallion.

People on a whale-watching tour boat behind two orcas

With summer in full swing, there’s plenty of action to be had on the country’s beaches and waterways. Looking to get off the sand and onto the water? In the Pacific Northwest and in the northeast, it’s a prime time for whale-watching: Though you can see orcas, gray and humpback whales frolicking in the Puget Sound , off the coast of Seattle, year-round, summer months are a great time to see them in the San Juan Islands. Whale-watching tours cater to both destinations, but you can also look for the marine mammals from Alki Beach in West Seattle, not far from downtown.

In Maine , the season begins in mid-April and runs through October, with humpbacks, finbacks, pilot and minke whales passing through on a regular basis. Whale-watching cruises are common up and down the state’s coast, and you can spot the massive creatures from the shore as well. (Bring binoculars.)

For a change of scenery, head to the Midwest for the Iowa State Fair , coming to Des Moines August 11 to 21. Attractions include livestock shows, country music, and a giant cow sculpted in butter, but the eats are possibly the main draw. Try one of the 69 available foods on a stick, from jalapeño corn dogs and popcorn balls to apple pies and funnel cakes.

The country begins cooling down this month, but there are still gloriously sunny, warm days to be had, especially out west. After a two-year hiatus, Burning Man returns to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert with a renewed focus on sustainability and inclusivity. This week-long happening – an experiment in temporary community – welcomes tens of thousands of artists and civilians each year, peaking on September 3 when the titular stick man catches fire.

In New Mexico, the 2022 Santa Fe Fiesta features two major events: the Historical (aka Hysterical) parade on September 11, with marching bands, mariachi, floats and more; and the pet parade the day before, in which hundreds of animals and thousands of kids – both in costume – take to the city streets.

Back east, in Bardstown, Kentucky – the self-described bourbon capital of the world – the 31st annual Kentucky Bourbon Festival is set to take place September 14 to 18. With happy hours, barbecue dinners and educational talks from master distillers as well as sampling events and a charity auction featuring rare and hard-to-find bottles, it’s five days of boozy fun for the 21-and-older set.

Up north, the leaves are changing colors, but down in Key West , it’s shoulder season, and the days are sunny and warm. Originally created in 1979 to draw visitors to then-deserted Duval Street, today Fantasy Fest pulls in thousands of attendees for a “10-day party in paradise for grown-ups.” This year’s fete has the theme “Cult Classics & Cartoon Chaos”, and it takes place October 21 to 30.

Closing out the month is Halloween, a Very Big Deal in cities like New York, LA, and San Francisco, where costumed revelers hit Sixth Avenue, West Hollywood and the Castro, respectively, to celebrate in glorious fashion. For more quaint but also more copious festivities, head to Massachusetts – home of the 17th-century witch trials – for Salem Haunted Happenings, an annual monthlong event that includes a parade and a street fair, plus costume balls, haunted houses, scary movies and ghost tours.

People dressed as la catrina calavera, marching in a Dia de Muertos parade

As the days grow shorter, the nights grow longer and the urge to hibernate grows stronger, it's no wonder eating is involved in this month's key events. Taking place on the fourth Saturday of the month with a giant meal as its centerpiece,  Thanksgiving is the big one, and on November 24, Broadway performers, floats, marching bands and dozens of giant character balloons commandeer the New York City streets for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. (It’s televised, but if you can get there in person, make time for a trek the night before to the Upper West Side, where you can watch the balloons being inflated.)

On a smaller scale, this month also plays host to Wurstfest, a 10-day celebration of the sausage in New Braunfels , Texas. Held rain or shine, this Bavarian jubilee has been around since 1961, and attendees don traditional dress (dirndls, lederhosen and silly hats, per the event website) to catch polka bands and yodelers, drink beer and eat plenty of the titular stuffed meat.

There are also Día de Muertos events across the country on November 1 and 2, in which Mexicans and people of Latin heritage remember and reunite with their dearly departed, marching in parades, setting up ofrendas with food, drink, flowers and photos of the dead.

In most years, December sees the kick off of Colorado’s ski season , but in 2021, many resorts had to delay opening due to lack of snow, so it’s hardly a sure thing – a trip out west may still be in order, but you’ll want to check the weather reports before you book.

Prefer sun to snow, and indoor activities to outdoor adventures? Make time for Art Basel Miami Beach , a branch of the international contemporary arts fest, featuring pieces from world-famous and emerging artists shown at galleries from five continents, plus exhibitions and events all over town. In 2022, it’s slated for December 1 to 4.

On December 1, New York’s holiday season commences with the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree – a tradition dating to 1931. The tree remains lit daily through New Year’s Eve, and the plaza stays packed as a result. It’s a magical time in the Big Apple, full of glitzy window displays, holiday shows, opportunities for ice skating and more.

The year draws to a close with New Year’s Eve, and while the festivities are epic in New York and Las Vegas, some of the country’s best celebrations are in less expected locations. Take Hawaii: There are fireworks displays on Kauai, Maui, the Big Island and Oahu, the latter of which hosts Roman candles, sparklers and rockets over Waikiki Beach as well as Honolulu’s famed Party of the Year – an all-out event at the Aloha Tower with rides, food trucks, DJs and live music leading up to midnight.

June Events in the United States

 vivalapenler/Getty Images

June kicks off the summer season in the United States, and the warmer weather makes it a popular time for travel. Schools let out for the summer break , and many people take time off to spend with their families this month.

If you're planning a trip in the United States this June, there are a few significant events happening, including the Chicago Blues Festival, the U.S. Open Golf Championship Tournament, and a variety of other celebrations across the country.

In 2020, many of the below events may have been canceled or rescheduled. Please check each event's respective website for additional information.

Early to Mid-June: Chicago Blues Festival

Don't miss your chance to hear the blues in the city that made it famous. The  Chicago Blues Festival  is a free musical event each June that features local and internationally known blues, jazz, and rock artists.

It takes place outdoors in Millennium Park, which lies within  Grant Park , on multiple stages over three days. The largest free blues festival in the world, it has drawn big names such as B.B. King, Ray Charles, Buddy Guy, and Mavis Staples. Not surprisingly, the event also draws big crowds, so be prepared for long lines. Make sure to book hotels and restaurants in advance of this beloved festival.

Mid-June: U.S. Open Golf Tournament

Held in a different location each year, the annual U.S. Open usually takes place in mid-June. It pits the biggest names in golf against one another for the championship tournament of the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour.

The 2020 U.S. Open was initially scheduled for June 18-21 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, but the tournament has been postponed to Sept. 17-20 this year.

Mid-June: Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in the United States; it takes place each June in Manchester, Tennessee. After its premiere in 2002, this diverse event has expanded to include a variety of different musical performances on several stages constructed on a 600-acre farm.

In 2020, Bonnaroo has been postponed to Sept. 24-27.

Mid-June: Coney Island Mermaid Parade

On the Saturday closest to June 21 each year, Coney Island in New York City celebrates the summer with a parade and festival dedicated to mythical creatures of the seas. The Coney Island Mermaid Parade brings thousands of guests to Surf Avenue for a day of elaborate costumes, festive food and drink, fine art, and all things aquatic.

Led by celebrity guests named as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, the parade starts as Surf Avenue and West 21st Street in Coney Island and concludes at Steeplechase Plaza. After the event, the founder of the parade leads attendees to Coney Island beach to officially open the swimming season for the summer.

The Mermaid Parade has been postponed for 2020, and a new date has not yet been announced.

June 21: Summer Solstice

The solstice marks the official first day of summer, and, in the Northern Hemisphere, the longest day of the year. After the 21st, days get incrementally shorter until the winter solstice on December 21 when nights are at their longest. Then, the cycle starts all over again.

People have recognized and celebrated the summer solstice since the time of the ancient Greeks. Summer solstice marked the beginning of the Greek calendar year, which was rung in with days-long festivals.

Today places all across the United States celebrate the first day of summer with parades, parties, and music. New York City takes a different approach by hosting its annual " Mind Over Madness " yoga day with free classes in  Times Square  from sunrise to sunset. On the West Coast, the city of Santa Barbara, California, celebrates with a  three-day arts festival . Each year has a different theme, and people come out to dance, listen to music, and view public art installations put up especially for the event.

Late June: San Francisco Pride Festival

One of the biggest—and oldest—LGBTQ Pride events in the United States is the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade, which takes place over the last full weekend in June each year.

This multi-day event commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City's Greenwich Village, which jumpstarted the gay rights movement of the 1970s. As part of the celebration, more than 200 parade groups and floats, as well as hundreds of vendors and organizations gather at Civic Center and march down Market Street between Beale and 8th streets.

The event has been canceled for 2020.

Late June to Early July: Summerfest Milwaukee

Heralded as "the world's largest music festival," Summerfest takes place in downtown Milwaukee over two weeks in late June and early July each year. Summerfest features dozens of performers that range from local musicians to big-name acts like Willie Nelson, Jennifer Lopez, and The Killers.

Tulips are some of the brightest, most beautiful harbingers of spring. When they start to bud — and then bloom — you know that warmer temperatures are right around the corner. Back in the 1600s, these flowers were so prized that in Holland, a single bulb could fetch the equivalent of thousands of dollars.

Today, tulips are celebrated across the country at tulip festivals dedicated entirely to these beautiful flowers. Usually held in cities or towns with a distinct Dutch heritage, each tulip festival is the perfect way to celebrate the end of winter.

Tulips captivate visitors coming across the USA with their vibrant hues and elegant blooms, symbolizing beauty and renewal. The annual Tulip Festivals in various states, like Washington and Oregon, attract thousands, celebrating spring’s arrival. Tulips’ versatility, ease of cultivation, and association with joy contribute to their enduring popularity in American gardens and events.

Here are a few of our favorite tulip festivals across the United States — and the reasons why you should check them out.

8 Best Tulip Festivals in the USA

1. tulip time, holland, michigan.

Tulips in Holland, Michigan.

It doesn’t get more Dutch than Holland, Michigan. The city, about a 3-hour drive from Detroit , is located on Lake Michigan and hosts one of the nation’s largest and best-known tulip festivals each year. Tulip Time is an 8-day celebration that features parades, traditional Dutch dance demonstrations, art installations, concerts, and five million blooming tulips planted by the Parks and Recreation Department across the city. New this year: You can even name a blooming bed for your family or loved one . Talk about the perfect floral gift!

Where To Stay

To be in the center of the action, consider staying downtown at one of several hotels there.

What To Eat

Nosh on Dutch favorites like buttery krakelingen , treats filled with almond paste, and saucijzenbroodjes , or Dutch pigs in a blanket. Locally-owned DeBoer Bakery has both.

Pro Tip: Weekends are typically the most crowded times. If you plan to visit then, be sure to book your accommodations far in advance. For more information and tips, see this piece .

2. Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Mount vernon, washington.

Colourful tulips in the large fields of Skagit Valley

The fields near Mount Vernon, Washington — about 50 miles north of Seattle — have always been packed with tulips; the Dutch have planted bulbs in the area for more than 100 years. In 1984, after thousands began flocking to the town during bloom season, Mount Vernon leaders decided to add a series of events to the month, and the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was born. It’s since grown to include art shows, concerts, farm tours, a fun run, bike rides, and the Downtown Mount Vernon Street Fair. Many events that require tickets will be available online.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival includes garden venues at four separate farms: RoozenGaarde, Tulip Town, Garden Rosalyn, and Tulip Valley Farm.

RoozenGaard

The Roozen family tulip growing business at the RoozenGaarde is the largest in the world of that kind, covering Skagit Valley with more than one million tulips, 1000 acres of field blooms, and 16 acres of greenhouses.

Tom DeGoede and his wife Jeannette poured their heart and soul into making Tulip Town a jewel of The Skagit Valley. Tulip Town is now a 30-acre farm with more than 5 acres of dazzling colorful fields and more than 50 varieties of tulips.

Garden Rosalyn

Located in the heart of Skagit Valley, Garden Rosalyn displays beautiful tulip fields during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival season. Garden Rosalyn is also home to a manmade lake with a resident flock of ducks and geese, a marketplace, a flower stand, and a beer and wine garden.

Tulip Valley Farm

Tulip Valley Farm is an expansive 30-acre farm in west Mount Vernon. It features over 10 miles of grass tulip trails with stunning views of Mount Baker.  Tulip Valley Farm offers an eclectic assortment of food trucks and a beer, wine, and cider garden.

For a charming bed and breakfast stay just a few minutes from the tulip fields, consider the Nantucket Inn in Anacortes, Washington. You’ll love the waterfront view from the front porch.

Make plans to visit Kiwanis Salmon BBQ in Mount Vernon for locally caught salmon and terrific sides. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. almost every day of the festival. The event is held at the Hillcrest Park Lodge; outdoor seating and to-go orders are available. It’s a delicious way to help support the local chapter of this charity group, which sponsors children’s programs locally and globally.

Pro Tip: The weather along Washington’s coast during the month of April can be rainy and windy. Make sure you pack a waterproof layer!

3. Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest

Woodburn, oregon.

Tulips at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn, Oregon

Sometimes, growers host huge parties to celebrate their blooms, and that’s the case in Woodburn, Oregon, about halfway between Portland and Salem. Since 1983, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm has raised and sold bulbs of all varieties. In 1985, the farm opened its fields on Easter weekend, and the Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest was born.

These days, the farm plants more than 40 acres of tulips and welcomes guests from the end of March until the first week of May. During the week, they sell cut flowers and bulbs. On the weekends, there’s plenty of family fun on the farm grounds, including shuttles to the flower fields, a children’s play area, and wooden shoe-making demonstrations.

The Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest makes a terrific road trip from Portland; one of our favorite spots to stay there is the historic and funky Hi-Lo Hotel .

If available, try the fresh berry jam, jelly, or pie. Marionberries are the most famous — they are a cross between two native blackberries, and they were created in Oregon.

Pro Tip: Plan to stop in at the wine-tasting room to sample some of the farm’s vintages.

4. Tulip Time Festival

Pella, iowa.

Sunken Gardens Park in Pella, Iowa

The tiny town of Pella, Iowa, is about 40 miles from Des Moines ; it was founded by immigrants from the Netherlands. Pella’s Tulip Time Festival began in 1935 as a small party to celebrate the town’s Dutch heritage. Since then, it’s become an entire long weekend featuring parades, performances, museum tours, a craft market, concerts, auto and tractor shows, and of course, several large tulip displays with hundreds of thousands of blooms in a whole host of colors.

Most events are free; tickets for others can be purchased on-site.

While Pella has several charming bed and breakfasts, the Amsterdam Hotel is well worth your consideration with its luxe rooms and complimentary breakfast.

Street vendors sell traditional Dutch foods during the event, including delicious stroopwafels, or wafer-thin waffle cookies with caramel-molasses filling.

Pro Tip: Most of Pella’s Tulip Time sights are within walking distance, but paid golf cart rides are also available at the festival.

5. Holland Ridge Farms U-Pick Tulips

Cream ridge, new jersey.

Tulip fields in Cream Ridge, New Jersey

One of the youngest tulip festivals on this list is Holland Ridge Farms’ U-Pick Tulips Season in Cream Ridge, New Jersey, located between New York City and Philadelphia . In 2017, the Jansen family planted a million tulip bulbs on their farm in preparation for a festival to celebrate the flower. Thousands came out to enjoy the colors and, for a small price, pick some flowers to bring home. The festival has since become a popular place for families to take photos and have down-home farm fun. It’s also recently expanded its plantings — visitors may clip all the blooms they’d like for just $1 a stem.

There are a number of hotel chains and other accommodation options in nearby Hamilton, New Jersey.

The farm features a bakery barn for sweet treats; there are also food trucks on-site. While guests can bring their own picnics during the week, food and drink must be purchased on-site on the weekends.

Pro Tip: Be sure to grab a bucket and clippers so you can snip your perfect bouquet.

6. Tulip Festival At Thanksgiving Point

Tulips at Thanksgiving Point in Utah.

Thanksgiving Point is a nonprofit learning and recreation center that seeks to connect visitors of all ages with the natural world. And when it’s springtime, it’s Tulip Festival time at the destination, located just a short drive south of Salt Lake City . The park’s Ashton Gardens are awash with color from April through early May, with more than a quarter of a million bulbs blooming. Attractions include concerts, a children’s play area, and plenty of fresh-cut tulips to purchase and take home.

If you don’t want to make the trek back to Salt Lake after tiptoeing through the tulips, there’s a SpringHill Suites by Marriott property conveniently located near Thanksgiving Point.

Try the pork osso bucco or prime rib at Thanksgiving Point’s Harvest Restaurant. Don’t just take it from us; here’s more on Thanksgiving Point’s dining options from the town itself.

Pro Tip: When you buy your ticket, keep in mind that you can also reserve a preferred time slot for your entry.

7. Albany Tulip Festival

Albany, new york.

Tulips in Albany, New York.

On Mother’s Day weekend, New York’s capital city of Albany comes alive with spring blooms, including more than 150 different varieties of tulips. For more than 70 years, the city has celebrated its Dutch roots at the Albany Tulip Festival that’s held at Washington Park. The fun includes fine arts exhibits, tulip tours, live music, and a street-scrubbing parade featuring participants in authentic Dutch costumes. More than 100 artisans sell their crafts in the park as well.

The best part? Admission to the event is free. The 2023 Albany Tulip Festival is scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend; the perfect opportunity to treat Mom!

The Washington Park Inn is a turreted Victorian mansion located right in the park. Its five guest rooms are well-appointed and charming, but this spot books quickly for the Tulip Festival! This gorgeous spot is also pet-friendly!

You can’t go wrong with Dutch street food, but if you’re in the mood for something different, El Loco Mexican Cafe on Washington Park’s southeastern corner is convenient and delicious.

Pro Tip: When you’ve taken in your share of tulips, walk over to Center Square, a charming neighborhood chock-full of historic brownstones and boutiques.

8. Festival Of Spring

Nokesville, virginia.

Just 40 miles southwest of Washington D.C., you’ll find the small town of Nokesville, Virginia. It’s become a must-stop for the spring, thanks to Burnside Farms, a family-owned farm featuring more than 200 varieties of tulips at its Festival of Spring . More than two million bulbs are planted here each season! You can pick your own blooms, enjoy a picnic on the farm’s grounds, and take part in a whole host of activities, including wagon rides to the fields, cornhole games, and even wooden shoes so you can try out your Dutch dance moves! Tickets for all the fun are available online.

You’ll find a whole host of lodging options in nearby Manassas; however, if you want to keep things cozy, check out the Inn at Evergreen , a stately inn dating back to the Civil War era. It’s located in Haymarket, about 16 miles north of Burnside Farms.

Where To Eat

For a quick bite (and brew!), head to Cedar Run Brewery at Evergreen Acres . It’s also located at a farm, and on the weekends, there’s a food truck parked to serve patrons.

Pro Tip: Burnside Farms doesn’t put an exact date on its Spring Festival because, as they say on their website, “Mother Nature is in charge.” Check back with them in early spring for more information.

Where Are the Largest Tulip Farms in the U.S.?

With about 20 million tulips harvested each summer in Skagit County, Skagit Valley has the largest tulip fields in the U.S., and the RoozenGaarde Tulip Valley farm is the largest tulip farm in Skagit Valley. Skagit Valley is also home to the massively popular Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

What Are the Most Famous Tulip Farms in Skagit Valley?

Apart from the Roozengaarde, the biggest tulip field, there are also Tulip Town, Garden Rosalyn, and Tulip Valley Farm. Each year, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival committee creates an interactive bloom map that guides you to the top fields.

How to Reach the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival?

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is easy to reach because it’s only 60 miles north of Seattle and only 70 miles south of Vancouver. PlU.S., the Amtrak Cascades train service runs to Mount Vernon, the closest town.

What Can I Do at a Tulip Festival?

During each annual festival, flower enthusiasts can get lost in acres of tulip gardens, stroll along tulip lanes, and enjoy cultural events and informational workshops. Tulip bulbs and cut flowers are available for purchase, so you can bring a little bit of those fields back home.

When Is the Best Time to Visit a Tulip Festival in the U.S.?

Tulip season runs from March until mid-May. The best picking time and prettiest tulips blooming appear in the middle of April. Tulips come up only when the ground has defrosted, so plan your visit in the spring when the ground is warmer.

Best New Festival (2024) January 5, 2024

What better ways are there to celebrate music, art, food, culture, and community than with a festival? In 2023, we were treated to a lineup of fantastic festivals that launched for the first time, giving you more new options to explore and enjoy.

From music extravaganzas to cultural immersions and foodie adventures, an expert panel nominated their top picks for best new festivals and readers voted for their favorites. Here are the 10 best new festivals.

Adjacent Festival

No. 10: Adjacent Festival - Atlantic City, New Jersey

Atlantic City, New Jersey, is undoubtedly a summer destination, and what better way to welcome the season than a two-day beachside festival? For its inaugural event, Adjacent Festival took over Memorial Day weekend at the shore with headliner artists including Paramore and Blink-182.

Black Authors Festival

No. 9: Black Authors Festival - Sag Harbor, New York

Co-founded by Darlene Williams and Verdel Jones, the mission of the Black Authors Festival is twofold: to celebrate Black contributions to the literary world and reinspire Black people to pen and publish their own stories. The inaugural event featured food from celebrity chef Marc Bynum, live music, and rousing conversations.

Because They're Funny Comedy Festival

No. 8: Because They're Funny Comedy Festival - Washington, D.C.

The Wharf is considered by locals as the "new heart of D.C.," and the Because They're Funny Comedy Festival added to that reputation in 2023 with its three days of laughter. The autumn event starred a diverse group of comedians who also led comedy workshops, panels, and podcasts for an interactive festival.

Texas Route 66 Festival

No. 7: Texas Route 66 Festival - Amarillo, Texas

If Route 66 is the road that shaped America, then it needs a historic celebration for its centennial in 2026. Texas Route 66 Festival started the celebrations early in 2023, promising three more years of festivals in anticipation of the 100th anniversary. Next up: a 10-day event in June 2024, featuring cattle drives, parades, and music festivals.

Highball

No. 6: Highball - Atlanta, Georgia

Sponsored by Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, Tequila Codigo 1530, Creature Comforts Brewing, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Tarpon Cellars, and The Georgia Hemp Company, Highball lived up to its name with two days of food, libations, and live music right next to the railroad tracks of Pullman Yards in Atlanta.

Wakpa Triennial Art Festival

No. 5: Wakpa Triennial Art Festival - St. Paul, Minnesota

The summer-long Wakpa Triennial Art Festival presented by Public Art Saint Paul provided an opportunity to discover new public art commissions by more than 110 Minnesota-based artists. Taking place in the Twin Cities — fed by the Mississippi River — "Wakpa," the Dakota language word for "river," acknowledges the significance of the location. The 12-week event in 2023 was themed on the network of mutuality, which reminded festivalgoers how art can bring society closer together.

Cincinnati Black Wine Festival

No. 4: Cincinnati Black Wine Festival - Cincinnati, Ohio

Black sommeliers and winemakers are underrepresented in the wine world, and the Cincinnati Black Wine Festival aims to change that. The festival empowers the Black wine community with its curated social experiences, grand tasting, and industry programming.

Birmingham FOOD+Culture Festival

No. 3: Birmingham FOOD+Culture Festival - Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham brought the heat with their inaugural food and culture festival, spanning four full days of culinary happenings with local talent. With luncheons and seated dinners, an extended farmers' market, and tasting events, the event delivered on its promise of showcasing Birmingham's cultural vibrancy in the culinary landscape.

HWY30 Music Fest: Texas Edition

No. 2: HWY30 Music Fest: Texas Edition - Fort Worth, Texas

As the saying goes, "everything's bigger in Texas," and HWY30 Music Fest hosted at the Texas Motor Speedway is no exception. Country stars took to the stage over four days, including Dierks Bentley, Zach Bryan, Koe Wetzel, Brothers Osborne, and Cody Jinks, and the organizers are teasing an even bigger lineup for 2024.

Troy Art Block

No. 1: Troy Art Block - Troy, New York

Started as a way to create a unique art destination for aficionados in the region, Troy Art Block commissioned 27 temporary murals for the town from multiple artists, including Aerosol Kingdom and Joe Iurato. In addition to the murals, there were panel discussions, live painting, and a block party to draw attention to local businesses.

Trump trial schedule: Latest on the trial and what you should expect this week

usa travel festivals

Former President Donald Trump 's hush money trial is on break Monday, but court will reconvene Tuesday morning .

Although the jurors and lawyers typically gather on Monday mornings, Judge Juan Merchan ruled last week that there would be no proceedings Monday, April 29.

Monday is part of the last two days of the Jewish holiday of Passover . Court also let out early on April 22 and April 23 to allow people to travel for religious gatherings.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records to disguise the hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels that allegedly constituted an illegal campaign contribution.

Here is what to know as Trump's trial continues into Week 3:

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Trump trial live updates: Testimony to continue on Cohen hush money recording

Trump trial schedule

The tria is expected to last six to eight weeks, according to a media advisory .

Proceedings typically start at 9:30 a.m. local time and run through the business day. Court is on break on Wednesdays .

Trial is not televised, but you can read transcripts

New York City Criminal Court is publishing the trial transcripts and copies of evidence shown to the jury.

Transcripts of proceedings aren't always available, but officials decided to make them available because of "unparalleled public interest."

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday's transcripts are available now on the New York State Unified Court System's media website. Evidence shown to the jury, including texts, emails and photos , also are available from last week's proceedings.

Week 2 ended during third witness testimony

Jurors heard from three witnesses last week.

First, David Pecker, former head of the National Enquirer’s parent company, testified about how he used the publication to write positive stories about Trump and prevent negative stories about him from coming out during his 2016 presidential campaign.

His testimony and cross-examination spanned three days. He also said his editor-in-chief believed Stormy Daniels' story about an alleged sexual encounter in 2006, which Trump denies.

Trump's former executive assistant Rhona Graff made a brief appearance on the witness stand Friday. When court wrapped for the week, the prosecution was questioning Gary Farro, former senior managing director at First Republic Bank. Farro, who was former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's banker in 2016, could be used to bring in email evidence about the payment to Daniels. CNN reported Cohen used money from his home equity line to cover Daniels' payment, and an email from a First Republic Bank employee confirmed the transfer.

Leaving the courthouse Friday, Trump challenged President Joe Biden to a debate.

“We’ll do it at the White House,” Trump said. “That would be very comfortable, actually.”

Margaret Mead Film Festival

“Mead 2024 gives platform to new voices that inspire fresh conversations about our shared humanity,” noted Jacqueline Handy, director of public programs at the American Museum of Natural History, adding the festival has been “a vibrant part of the Museum landscape since 1977.”

The festival kicks off on Thursday, May 9 with Soundtrack ‘63 , “a live, music and multimedia retrospective of the Black experience in America.” The following evening will see the New York premiere of Sugarcane , the award-winning documentary that investigates the legacy of residential schools in British Columbia where Indigenous children were separated from their families and systematically deprived of their language and culture, coercing them to assimilate into white Canadian society.

'Sugarcane'

Sugarcane directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie , who won the U.S. Documentary directing award for their film at Sundance, will participate in a Q&A following the Margaret Mead premiere. (National Geographic, which acquired the film out of Sundance, will open the film in theaters later this year).

On view throughout the festival will be Karam Gill’s docuseries Ice Cold: The Untold Story of Hip Hop Jewelry , a four-part examination of “the cultural significance and craftsmanship behind hip hop jewelry, exploring its evolution from a symbol of status to a form of self-expression.” The series is being presented alongside the opening of a special exhibition at the museum titled Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry.

“What you see in the program is very much a Mead program. It’s very international. There are films that are more traditional documentary to more experimental documentary,” festival director Noah Bashevkin told Deadline in an interview. “In general, what connects them is filmmakers who’ve embedded themselves in community and done the work of deep listening with communities around the world. What started as a festival of anthropology [in 1977] has evolved into a festival of documentary because we believe that the two disciplines are not necessarily so different.”

A hiatus of several years provided a chance for the festival to reset, Bashevkin explained. “We did feel like it was an opportunity to sort of refine and double down on some of what makes the festival specific and characterizes the festival.”

Tabitha Jackson

To that end, the festival created an advisory board of distinguished figures in documentary and anthropology to consult on the program. The board includes Tabitha Jackson, former director of the Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Billy Luther, and Harjant Gill, a documentary filmmaker and visual anthropologist.

Jackson said of the program, “These are films that they’re clearly not being made to satisfy a market demand. They’re not being made to satisfy a corporate agenda. They’re not being made as pure entertainment. They are expressions of someone who has to reveal what they have experienced, what they’ve noticed about the world. And they’re kind of thrilling in that way.”

Dr. Margaret Mead

The festival is named for the famed anthropologist and scholar who worked in the American Museum of Natural History’s division of anthropology for more than 50 years. The intersection of documentary filmmaking and anthropology goes back to the very early days of cinema.

“If we think of anthropology as the study of human behavior and what is unique about the species and where we came from and how we behave as this kind of group of monkeys is fascinating. And that is what documentary aspires to reveal as well,” Jackson observed.

She added, “Anthropology went through its own time of examining its practices and who gets to look at whom and who is objectified and where the power dynamics lie. Similar things are going on in the documentary world and, to be fair, have been ever since documentary started. But now there is a particular reckoning with power and gaze and the practices of the documentary field. But the key thing is, as that interrogation and corrective work goes on, it’s still in service of understanding human experience, human history and exactly who we are.”

On Sunday, May 12, the festival will present its Emerging Visual Anthropologist Showcase, exhibiting “exciting new ethnographic documentaries from emerging visual anthropology students.”

“The Emerging Visual Anthropology Showcase has been a part of the Mead for decades if not since the beginning,” Bashevkin commented. “And as the festival thinks about itself more expansively in the field, it’s a way of paying homage and paying due to our origin in academia… If the festival is really intent to bring people together from different communities, one of the main intersections is the film community and the academic community, which often are saying similar things but in different languages and not speaking to each other.”

“The festival is the kind of important and shiny manifestation of community, of work having been completed, which is always a kind of celebratory act,” Jackson said. “But they are also incredibly important nodes of circulation of the work so that filmmakers and audiences can be inspired by what they’re seeing, how things are being made, as we go forward what new techniques are being used to in some way service truths or reality of human experience.”

Young people outside brightly paited doors

A trail of two cities: an alternative guide to Salford and Manchester

Sunday’s Sounds from the Other City festival is a joyful celebration of Greater Manchester’s leftfield culture

O n the first Sunday of May every year, Chapel Street, where central Manchester and Salford meet, comes alive with DIY art, music and spectacle at the Sounds from the Other City festival. It is a vibrant public celebration of the “community spirit and collaborative working” which co-director Emma Thompson says sustains much alternative culture in the region.

“Collaboration is core to what we do, to Greater Manchester as a city,” Thompson says. “People come together, and it crosses genres and art forms. Sounds from the Other City wouldn’t be turning 20 next year if it wasn’t for that. The fees we offer aren’t huge but people really get behind it, do it for the love of it.”

Thompson is forthright about the challenges facing those making experimental art: “It’s precarious. It feels unstable.” Costs are high, affordable space is scarce, funding is “very competitive”. Such forces are reshaping the creative landscape, literally. Manchester’s Northern Quarter still has its quirkier, arty hangouts, but generic bars and restaurants dominate. Leftfield culture is migrating to the city’s edges – or into Salford.

For the past 18 months, the band WH Lung have been based at Salford’s Islington Mill, a complex of artist-maker studios. Keyboard player Tom Sharkett says that a time when, in many ways, you’d “have to be mad” to pursue a life in music and art, it is inspirational to be surrounded by people “doing cool stuff for the right reasons”.

Opened in 2000, Islington Mill has latterly expanded into new buildings, including an adjacent trading estate. “The Mill feels like it’s taken on a new life. It feels strong,” says Sharkett. That’s also true of wider Manchester and Salford’s creative vigour. The obstacles are many, but the urge to make great art endures.

Music and nightlife

DJs and purple lighting

Arguably, Manchester music is as vibrant right now as at any point post-punk – from Anz to Space Afrika, Blackhaine to Sockethead, Mandy, Indiana to Michael J Blood. Much of that is down to the nurturing influence of The White Hotel , a former garage near Strangeways prison. In contrast with the bland gentrification of modern Manchester, this singular entity (grimy location, great sound, art school ethos, all-night-rave energy) has created space for new music to grow. “It’s a really important space,” says Thompson.

In the Northern Quarter, but in similar creative territory, club and gig venue Soup proves that all you need is a basement, a red light and, as well as a feeling, a programme that challenges its audience.

Other city-centre venues that defy convention include punk and indie haven the Star & Garter , Aatma , the Peer Hat and Peste (see Drink section below). But interesting things increasingly happen just outside the centre, often in unexpected places.

Two of Manchester’s vital grassroots venues – the Old Abbey Taphouse , on a science park in Hulme, south of the city centre; and DBA on Cheetham Hill to the north – are historic pubs that now double as club and music venues. “Stood outside the DBA,” says Sharkett, of this traditional Victorian boozer, “you wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on in there.” He once took veteran Glaswegian DJs Optimo in: “They’ve seen it all, but loved it.”

In these relatively obscure corners, music is encouraged to get weird: at warehouse venue Hidden ; Salford’s Eagle Inn ; the musically out-there N/OM ; the Yard ; and Partisan at Islington Mill. Affordable, inclusive and home to “a huge array” of LGBTQ+ events, the Partisan collective is one of the city’s most exciting venues, according to Thompson. “It’s a glorious place.”

Arts and culture

Queer Lit bookshop exterior

At 24 years young, Salford’s Islington Mill remains an essential creative hub. Its public events are led by Partisan, which hosts club nights, exhibitions, discussion groups and creative workshops, and “radioactive queer bar” Mirage . This bar-gallery-event space is home to genre-fluid evenings of art, performance and experimental music, from outfits including Kunstlicker and Short Supply .

Also in Salford, artists’ studio space Paradise Works regularly hosts exhibitions (entry by appointment), as does Oceans Apart , a contemporary painting gallery at OA Studios (by appointment, mainly weekends).

In central Manchester, visitors might spot pop-up exhibitions in multi-use spaces such as Studio Bee . HappeningInMCR curates a “micro-gallery” at alternative shopping emporium Affleck’s Palace , and the foyer of the Great Northern Warehouse leisure complex (already home to a collection of artist Stanley Chow’s illustrations) will soon feature work from 30 creatives based on site at GRIT Studios MCR ’s new space.

For more established contemporary art there is Castlefield Gallery , currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, and ESEA Contemporary , which showcases work of east and south-east Asian heritage. Jane Jin Kaisen ’s current Halmang exhibition explores themes provoked by the female seafood divers of South Korea’s Jeju island.

Book lovers in the Northern Quarter can explore LGBTQ+ bookshop Queer Lit , or Anywhere Out Of the World , which focuses on philosophy and poetry – and hosts similarly thought-provoking music events on its upper floor. Nearby, Village Books is a feast of pop-cultural periodicals and ’zines and houses a neat basement exhibition space.

Gulliver’s pub exterior at night

Eager to drink different? You are in the right cities. There are exceptional cocktails at Schofield’s (currently number one on the UK Top 50 Cocktails Bars list); natural wine at KERB and Flawd ; and incredible beer at Port Street Beer House , the Marble Arch or Smithfield Market Tavern . Further off-piste, the trading estate behind Manchester’s Piccadilly Station (dubbed the Beermuda Triangle by resident brewery Sureshot ) is home to tap rooms from Track , Cloudwater and funky, mixed fermentation explorers Balance Brewing & Blending .

Want some cultural stimulation with your pint? In Salford, the Kings Arms is a real ale pub and theatre; YES is a student-friendly complex of bars, gig venues, DJs and pizza; and there is storied underground record shop, Eastern Bloc . By night, the latter morphs into a late bar for techno larks. Prefer guitars? Head to Oldham Street pub and music venues Gullivers , the Castle Hotel and cafe-bar Night & Day , which recently resolved its noise complaint issues with Manchester city council.

Newer venues include the Peer Hat , a brilliantly ramshackle boho pub and basement venue geared to marginal scenes. It is an all-ages refuge from the shinier, more commercial aspects of the Northern Quarter – somewhere, says Thompson, that promoters can put on weird, noisy stuff. “It’s intimate enough you can have 20 people in and it feels great. You can experiment. You need that.”

A little way north on the edge of Ancoats, White Hotel spin-off O! Peste Destroyed is a handsomely styled (ecclesiastical chic) bar, record and bookshop devoted to head-stretching work, with exhibitions and art installations in its basement. On Fridays, DJ Conor Thomas leads drinkers on ear-opening excursions into downtempo electronics, frazzled pop-edits and all points in between. A1 cocktails served by friendly bar staff complete this gem of a bar.

Pollen bakery exterior

Manchester’s food scene is growing at astonishing speed, with distinctive independents frequently setting the pace. A medium wrap from Go Falafel is still the best way to spend £5.50 in the Northern Quarter. The meat-free half of the menu at nearby Asmara Bella , a cosy, laid-back Eritrean and Ethiopian bistro, is a similar flavour-packed boon for vegans and vegetarians, as is Piccadilly’s Bundobust , with its Gujarati sharing plates.

Idle Hands has you covered for coffee and brunch. Pollen bakery-cafes are also good. Across town, Grub , hidden in an old light-industrial unit, is a bar and creative events space (home, for example, to Cultplex cinema and classes from Floating Art ) and hosts street-food traders in its quirky, upcycled beer garden.

For something more refined, Another Hand on Deansgate Mews offers stellar plates of roasted cabbage in cider, smoked mussel and pancetta cream, or butter bean cacio e pepe . At nearby Exhibition , there is food from three different kitchens, including Baratxuri, a compelling homage to the Basque Country.

Higher Ground is arguably Manchester’s most singular dining experience. Using heritage and rare-breed ingredients from small producers (including Higher Ground’s partner, Cheshire market garden Cinderwood), chef Joe Otway creates dishes – coal-roasted pork, yellow peas and sprouting cabbage, or leek with smoked cod’s roe and thyme – which, although simple in outline, are generous, surprising and flavour intense.

An apartment at Native Manchester

Set around an impressive, five-floor atrium within Ducie Street Warehouse , Native Manchester ’s 162 aparthotel rooms are modish, comfortable spaces. The keen aesthetic (post-industrial via Copenhagen) continues into the buzzy, ground-floor public areas. DJs soundtrack the weekend and spaces host events ranging from film screenings to pop-up vintage sales. Doubles from £100 B&B.

Also convenient for the Northern Quarter, Cow Hollow is a stylish, 16-bed boutique bolthole. Clever use is made of the building’s 19th-century industrial heritage, with ironworks and winding gears incorporated as features. Its small, glamorous bar evokes Rimini or Ibiza Town. Doubles from £99 B&B.

Sounds From The Other City is on 5 May , tickets £40 plus booking fee

Iran Pressures Mohammed Rasoulof to Pull ‘Seed of the Sacred Fig’ From Cannes, Slaps Travel Ban on Film’s Actors

Mohammed Rasoulov

Iranian authorities are exerting heavy pressure on director Mohammad Rasoulof to pull his latest work “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” from the Cannes Film Festival by harassing the film’s producers and actors who have been summoned for questioning and banned from leaving the country.

Human rights lawyer Babak Paknia, who is Rasoulof’s lawyer, said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that several unspecified actors and producers on “Sacred Fig” were summoned and questioned last week by authorities. He added that Iran’s authorities also pressured them to convince Rasoulof to withdraw the film from the festival.

Popular on Variety

Meanwhile the cast, plot, and producers of “Sacred Fig” are still being kept under wraps.

Dubai-based independent Iranian producer Kaveh Farnam, a producer on Rasoulof’s 2020 Berlin Golden Bear-winner “There Is No Evil” and “A Man of Integrity,” who keeps in contact with Rasoulov – though he is not a producer on “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” – told Variety that Rasoulov may currently “be hiding somewhere,” which may explain why Iranian authorities have not put pressure on him directly.

Rasoulof was incarcerated by Iranian authorities in July 2022 after he posted an appeal urging Iranian security forces to stop using weapons during protests prompted by a building collapse in the southwestern city of Abadan. He was released in February 2023 for health reasons.

For the director, not being able to leave his country is certainly not a novelty. Rasoulof was not allowed by Iranian authorities to attend Berlin in 2020. That year, the director’s daughter, Baran Rasoulof, who stars in “There Is No Evil,” picked up his Golden Bear.
