Review: Janet Jackson, on Unbreakable Tour, Shows Off Her Demure Side

unbreakable tour janet jackson

By Jon Pareles

  • Sept. 1, 2015

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A newly demure Janet Jackson started her “Unbreakable World Tour” at Rogers Arena here on Monday night. She was dressed in white and covered, like her dancers and musicians, from shoulders to shoes. And she avoided one big subset of her songwriting: her salacious, sometimes kinky whispers. That left Ms. Jackson, 49, to play the many other, less titillating roles that have given her major hits and made her an enduring influence across pop and R&B.

It has been four years since Ms. Jackson toured, and seven since she released a studio album; she has announced the impending release of a new one, “Unbreakable.” In 2012, Ms. Jackson married a Qatari businessman, Wissam al-Mana , and largely disappeared from public view before resurfacing to tour. Her Vancouver concert included three unreleased songs and the insinuating “No Sleeep,” the first single from “Unbreakable.” The concert’s finale, a ballad with Motown roots, was presumably the album’s title song; it praised enduring love, announcing, “It’s unbreakable.”

In songs and videos as early as her 1986 album, “Control,” Ms. Jackson staked out possibilities that have been seized by many younger hit makers. Her songs with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, her longtime collaborators in songwriting and production, extrapolated from her brother Michael and from Prince — then seen as rivals — while adding the Olympian optimism of Diana Ross and her own increasingly explicit eroticism. But even her risqué details were usually proffered to a man she loved, making romance carnal.

In Vancouver, her “Unbreakable” tour set arrived as medleys that touched on as many hits as possible, grouping the songs by persona and tempo.

She was the woman taking charge (funk), the joyfully loyal lover (upbeat pop), the ballad singer, the woman left lonely (midtempo R&B), the party girl (dance club beats), the rocker (with guitar up front) and, in the end, the idealist.

She also established her hip-hop connections. The opening song, a new one about D.J.s and dancing, had Missy Elliott rapping (on video) in praise of Ms. Jackson, and Ms. Jackson’s “Any Time, Any Place” was updated with a bit of Kendrick Lamar’s “Poetic Justice,” which had sampled “Any Time, Any Place.” J. Cole, also on video, rapped on “No Sleeep.”

Most of the songs based their arrangements on the album tracks, propulsive and bustling. Yet when the band was pared back for ballads, Ms. Jackson’s exposed voice was still secure, never as delicate as she could make it sound. The rock songs included “Scream” as a duet with the voice of Michael Jackson; she belted it with a raw urgency.

Life is still a line dance for Ms. Jackson. For most of her concert, she was flanked by dancers in white who staked out geometric formations and usually echoed her every angular move: the jutting elbows, the quick head turns, the canted legs, the precise hip twitches, some of them familiar from the choreography in her old videos.

The dancers are her retinue and her troops, maybe even her cult, a vision of strength and solidarity even when Ms. Jackson was singing about one-on-one relationships.

As the concert neared its end, Ms. Jackson moved from the personal to the communal, summoning the staccato funk and calls for collective action of “Rhythm Nation”; suddenly, the number of onstage dancers more than doubled, all moving in sync.

Next came a new song: a ballad that marched its way toward an anthem, part U2 and part trance music. The video screens showed photographs of the poor and homeless, as well as a shot with a Canadian message, with a protester’s sign addressing the country’s prime minister, Stephen Harper: “Harper: No Tar Sands Pipelines.” Her dancers pumped fists in the air, and she sang, “We won’t accept excuses/We tolerate no abuses” and “Make this world a better place.” It was the virtuous Janet Jackson, the one who was always there.

The “Unbreakable World Tour” will travel to the Prudential Center in Newark on Feb. 17 and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Feb. 22.

Janet Jackson Announces State of the World Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Janet Jackson has announced a massive North American trek to reschedule her Unbreakable Tour that was  postponed due to the singer’s pregnancy , with Jackson set to embark on a rebranded trek starting in September.

“I’m continuing my tour as I promised ,” Jackson said Monday night in a video to fans. The rescheduled trek features 56 shows and begins September 7th in Lafayette, Louisiana and concludes December 17th in Atlanta.

Tickets from the postponed Unbreakable Tour gigs will be honored at the new dates, while newly scheduled stops will go on sale starting May 5th at Live Nation.

However, the Unbreakable Tour – titled after Jackson’s 2015 album but a target of mockery because of the many postponements and cancellations the tour endured before it was indefinitely postponed with over 70 dates remaining – has undergone a name change.

“I decided to change the name of the tour: State of the World Tour,” Jackson said. “It’s not about politics. It’s about people, the world, relationships, and just love.”

In the 90-second-long video, Jackson also briefly touched on her experiences as a mother of a newborn as well as confirmed that she and Wissam Al Mana, her husband of five years, are divorcing. “Yes, I separated from my husband. We are in court and the rest is in God’s hands,” she said.

The "Together Again" singer, 49, will hit the road to play shows across the globe for the first time since her Number Ones, Up Close and Personal tour in 2011. Jackson has had a quiet few years and stepped out of the limelight — to get married, among other things — but will be making her grand return with the start of the tour this summer.

Janet Jackson to Release 1st Album in 7 Years

Last month, the "Rhythm Nation" singer set off an internet frenzy when she announced on May 16, her 49th birthday, that she was working on new music and a new tour.

"I promised you’d hear it from my lips, and now you will," Jackson said in a video that she tweeted out with the hashtag #ConversationsInACafe, the new album's presumed title.

"This year: new music, new world tour, a new movement. I’ve been listening. Let’s keep the conversation going," she said.

Following today's announcement, Jackson posted a video of dancers auditioning for the tour.

Creative director of Janet Jackson tour says fans will see a 'new Janet' at Acrisure Arena

J anet Jackson will grace the stage at Acrisure Arena on Tuesday, and her Creative Director Gil Duldulao promised that the new leg of the Together Again Tour will showcase several exciting enhancements to the singer's live show.

Jackson kicked off a  three-month Together Again outing in 2023 and announced in January that the new leg of the 35 date-tour would start at Acrisure Arena.

Named for her No. 1 hit from 1997, the tour features a setlist of three dozen songs — albeit many in medley form — including hits “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “That’s the Way Love Goes,” “Doesn’t Really Matter” and infrequently heard album tracks “Damita Jo” and “So Excited.”

"It's elevated and it's club music, so it hits you hard from the get go, then we get into her hits," Duldulao said. "I think people aren't going to expect the first half of the show because she hasn't played any of these songs on tour ever, and that's what sets this tour apart. Choreographically and even the way she sings these songs, you're going to see a new Janet. There's so much to look forward to."

Expect innovative stage elements, visuals at Janet Jackson's show

One highlight of the "Together Again" tour is the innovative stage with over 20 transformations during each performance. The current production boasts a dynamic ensemble comprising a five-member band, five backup singers, and stunning visuals, along with other impressive stage elements.

A swirling  slate of fashion statements , including a gold bodysuit and a fuchsia-and-plaid jumpsuit, and shoulder-squaring moves with a troupe of dancers added to the visual spectacle of last year's tour.

Duldulao said the challenge has been ensuring the crew is fully prepared and synchronized during rehearsals.

"We've tried to keep the same people all the time, but everyone gets busy and is doing something else. I think with automation and having new band members, there's a lot going on and the challenge is getting everyone into this new setlist and show in such a short amount of time," said Duldulao.

Jackson hasn’t released a new album since 2015’s “Unbreakable,” but like many major artists lately such as Madonna  and  Taylor Swift , she staged her most recent tour as an overview of her storied career.

"She's involved in every department (in the creative process) whether it's music, costumes, speaking to the designers, choreography and every other aspect of the shows," said Duldulao. "I know her movements, when she's going off stage and where she's at during a certain time. I make sure every department is there for her. We created the show together, so I feel like if someone forgets about a certain part ... I'm on the radio going through all the cues."

With the new additions to the stage and production for the next leg of the tour, Duldulao said he hopes audiences will find respite from the current events around the globe and enjoy Jackson's show.

"If there's some way we can provide any type of light and distraction, even if it's two hours of their life, to enjoy themselves through the music, visuals and the setlist, then I'm happy. The setlist moves the soul ... it's a celebration," said Duldulao.

In their review from opening night, the New York Times says Janet is "an enduring influence across Pop and R&B" and "Her Unbreakable tour touched on as many hits as possible, grouping the songs by persona and tempo. She was the woman taking charge (funk), the joyfully loyal lover (upbeat pop), the ballad singer, the woman left lonely (midtempo R&B), the party girl (dance-club beats), the rocker (with guitar up front) and, in the end, the idealist.”  USA Today says “Janet Jackson kicked off her Unbreakable tour with a superhuman performance” and "Janet slays…”; Rolling Stone hails Janet’s performance as “Propulsive,” and Vibe as “Flawless,” also adding that the Queen of Pop has “…begun her global takeover.”

Janet and the Unbreakable World Tour were trending both on Twitter and Facebook throughout the day following the tour's opening night with fans quickly setting social media on fire upon seeing the first images from the tour and hearing some of the new music including a scorching song, "Burn It Up," with hip-hop innovator, Missy Elliot. The song was produced by long time Janet collaborators, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and will be featured on her forthcoming album, Unbreakable, due this Fall. The album has already been celebrated by critics, with Entertainment Weekly calling it “Powerful,” Rolling Stone referring to it as “Soulful,” and the New York Times exclaiming "Janet Jackson's Unbreakable is Right On Time."

The first single from the new album, "No Sleeep," entered the Top Ten on the Urban AC and Billboard Hot R&B Songs charts only two weeks after being released. This week, nearly 10 weeks after its release, the song, now featuring J. Cole is enjoying its third week at the #1 spot on Billboard's Adult R&B chart.

Janet Jackson, iconic music artist, multi-award-winning songwriter, producer, singer, Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and winner of the NAACP Best Sporting Actor award, publisher, choreographer, dancer, Number One New York Times Best Selling Author, businessperson, and philanthropist, is one of the biggest-selling, most influential artists in popular music history.
