Hi, my name is Ginger DeRay...

…and I am the owner and operator of A&A Historical Trails Stables.

I was born on a cold, stormy Feb. day in 1955 in Grand Lake, CO, where my parents operated a lodge and a pony ring by the lake. My parents eventually lost the lodge because of “paperwork.” Penniless, they moved to Aurora (east Denver) with a pony ring to start Saddle Lane Stables. I don’t remember when I first rode a horse. I do remember, however, helping my mom make ribbons from scratch… ribbons that were given away every Sunday to participants in the weekly gymkanas my parents offered. When I was 14, I left my parents, my three sisters, my two bothers, and my home in order to find my destiny. Six months later, I realized what my destiny was… it was that which I had left! So homeward bound I went with a new outlook on life and a new respect for my parents and environment.

My teenage daughter and I wanted to ride horses in the mountains during our Colorado vacation and we found this place not far from our lodgings. We went on a one hour ride as we are both veginners. Our guide was super informative and picked the perfect horses for us.

I almost didn't make it out here, but am so thankful that I did! It is difficult to access without a car, but I took a "casino" shuttle bus from downtown Denver, and Ginger, the owner picked me up at the casino! Talk about great service!

We took the cemetery ride which provided both a fantastic view up the mountains along an authentic but long abandoned mining road and a short but welcome break (for the occasional rider) to walk around the historic Russel Gulch cemetery. What a great time and experience!

After the ride, Ginger was there waiting and we helped put the horses up and all the tack. We spoke to Ginger and Barb for a little while about horses, Colorado, and life and had a great time. We will be back, can't wait to do another ride. We have ridden horses most of our lives, these horses were in great shape and eager to go at any moment. Horseback Riding in Colorado’s Canyons

One of the best ways to see Colorado’s canyon country is on the back of a horse. Rimrock Adventures provides our guests with two spectacular areas in which to ride. Great ride for beginners or inexperienced riders. Children are also welcome ages 7 and up. There is a weight limit of 250 lbs. Please let us know if someone in your party is over 6’4”.

2 Hour Ride: Colorado Canyons Ride

$100/ADULT AND $75/CHILD

This ride extends the one hour ride to include the rim of Devil’s Canyon. The beauty of the red rock coves and canyons abound with desert wildlife including eagles, deer, jack rabbits and sometimes the elusive coyote. There are some tricky inclines and declines along this trail making it slightly more technical than the one hour, but still appropriate for novice riders. There is a weight limit of 250 lbs. Please let us know if someone in your party is over 6’4”.

2 Hour Ride: Sunset Ride

$110/ ADULT AND $85/ CHILD

This Sunset Ride shows the Grand Valley in the best light (no pun intended). As you trek passed the base of the Colorado National Monument, the land and wildlife come to life. The desert birds come out to catch their last meals for the day while the setting sun paints the Bookcliffs pink. This is an unforgettable experience to have with someone you love.

This sanctuary rescues large, exotic and endangered animals from around the US and provides them safety and a life-long home. As a non-profit they depend on the generosity of the patrons and other supporters to feed the rescued animals. A great way to support them is by visiting the sanctuary and taking the time to get to know the animals. They have a unique viewing system of elevated walkways that stretch over 1.5 miles. The Mile into the Wind walkways allow the animals to roam and feel unthreatened in their territory, no matter how many visitors are gazing from above!

Take a two hour drive from Denver to the  Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center  where they offer tours to see, learn about, and interact with wolves, foxes and coyotes. To visit the wolves you must register so that the center can be ready to give you the best tour. If you are unable to make it your payment will be a donation for these endangered and majestic creatures. Before going make sure to read all the rules carefully because it is clear that no Uggs are allowed in any weather, along with fur or anything animal based. Perhaps wolves have strict sense of fashion as well as safety, so don’t even get them started on Crocs.

Railbiking Is Catching On Across the Nation—Here’s Where to Try It Yourself

Sit back, relax and pedal your way along historic railroad tracks

In the 1860s, early settlers discovered a thick vein of coal in north-central Colorado. They set to work mining the valuable fuel and, not long after, officially incorporated their little town, which they named Erie.

Encouraged by Erie’s burgeoning coal industry, in 1871 , Union Pacific Railroad agreed to build a spur off its main line , which ran between Denver and Cheyenne, Wyoming. That spur, which became known as the Denver and Boulder Valley Railroad, connected Brighton to the east with Boulder to the west, with a stop in Erie along the way.

For decades, the train transported coal and passengers until, one by one, the Erie mines began to close. In 2002, Union Pacific stopped using the tracks altogether and later sold them to Colorado’s regional public transportation agency.

Now, more than 150 years since the tracks were laid, wheels are once again rolling down them in Erie—only, this time, they’re not attached to a heavy locomotive. Rather, they’re part of a new human-powered contraption called a “railbike.”

For a fee, travelers can clamber aboard the comfortable four-seat, four-wheel bike—which spans the full width of the tracks—and pedal along a 4.2-mile stretch while taking in views of the snow-capped Rockies.

Railbike attractions like this one in Colorado, called Colorado Railbike Adventures , are catching on across the nation. They’re an accessible, beginner-friendly way for people of all ages and fitness levels to get outside and enjoy a little fresh air. At the same time, they’re also breathing new life into long-dormant tracks—and bringing renewed attention to the history of American railroads.

“We’re sitting there going, ‘This is a really huge piece of Colorado history and Erie history, and it’s just wasting away under the grass,’” says Jeff Rummer, cofounder of Colorado Railbike Adventures, to the Colorado Springs Gazette ’s Seth Boster. “Part of this is bringing that story back to life.”

Railbikes themselves are not new. A wide variety of human-powered vehicles—including velocipedes , draisines and handcars —have been rolling atop train tracks for more than a century. However, while these devices were historically used for railroad maintenance, today’s railbikes are just for fun.

Curious about railbiking? Here are five other places to try it yourself.

Versailles, Kentucky

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Louisville Southern Railroad ferried passengers between Lawrenceburg and Lexington, Kentucky, with a stop in Versailles along the way. These days, however, the tracks are mostly used by intrepid adventurers riding railbikes equipped with electric motors.

Rail Explorers , which has railbike attractions across the country, opened its Central Kentucky outpost last summer. Tours meander past horse farms and limestone hills before stopping to turn around near the Kentucky River gorge.

“You don’t need to be a Lance Armstrong to do this, and that’s exactly why I fell in love with it,” said Mary Joy Lu, cofounder of Rail Explorers, to Spectrum News 1 ’s Austin Schick last July. “Because the community needs more things multigenerational people can do.”

Noblesville, Indiana

On the outskirts of Indianapolis, you can take a relaxing train ride in a 1956 Santa Fe El Capitan car on the Nickel Plate Express . But if you’re looking for a more active adventure, consider booking a railbike tour instead.

The Nickel Plate Express offers three different railbike excursions ranging from 90 minutes to three hours long—including one at twilight, which includes s’mores around a campfire and lanterns illuminating the bikes.

“It’s a brand-new way to experience this historic railroad, the outdoors and be physically active,” Emily Reynolds, executive director of the Nickel Plate Express, told WRTV ’s Ashlyn Wright when the new railbike tours launched last month.

Grawn, Michigan

Wheels on Rails became Michigan’s first railbike attraction when it opened in Grawn, just south of Traverse City in Northern Michigan, last summer. Founder Macie Hefron discovered her passion for railroads while working for the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Office of Rail during college.

“I never saw myself getting into the rail industry, but I did,” Hefron told Interlochen Public Radio ’s Tyler Thompson last year.

Choose between a 3-mile or 6-mile out-and-back ride on an unused stretch of track operated by the Great Lakes Central Railroad . The shorter excursion takes about an hour from start to finish, but does require some more intense, uphill pedaling on the return trip.

Santa Paula, California

In 1887, crews working for the Southern Pacific Railroad laid tracks for a main north-south line to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even into the 1950s, the line was used to transport oranges and lemons grown in the fertile Santa Clara River Valley.

Today, Sunburst Railbikes is reinvigorating the old tracks by offering 10-mile, two-hour rides through groves of avocado and citrus trees. The tours depart from the historic Santa Paula depot—which was built in 1887, but today primarily serves as office space —and include a stop at Prancer’s Farm , where guests can pick up fresh produce and souvenirs. You can even take the tour at sunset.

The rides, which launched last year, provide a respite from the “larger Los Angeles urban landscape” and “harken back to the quieter times of the area’s rich [agricultural] heritage,” said Melodie Hilton, a spokeswoman for Mendocino Railway, which runs the railbikes, to the Ventura County Reporter ’s Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer in April 2023.

Kennebunkport, Maine

In Maine, you can learn all about trains, trolleys, buses, electric streetcars and other forms of public transit at the Seashore Trolley Museum  in Kennebunkport. Then, when you’re done perusing the exhibitions, head outside and hop aboard a railbike for a 3.5-mile ride .

Choose between a two-seat or a four-seat railbike for cruising along the tracks, which were used by the Atlantic Shore Line Railway , an electric trolley line that operated in the early 1900s. (And if railbiking isn’t your thing, you can ride the museum’s vintage trolley instead.)

“I haven’t been on a standard bicycle in many years—and for those, like me, who may have some qualms about getting on a rail bike—fear not,” wrote Liz Gotthelf for the Saco Bay News last year. “The wheels lock on the rails, so you don’t have to steer, or worry about balance. Just sit back, pedal and enjoy the ride.”

The 10 Best Snowmobile Tours in Colorado

The same weather and terrain that make the Centennial State a skiing destination also make it a popular place for another winter activity: snowmobiling. With the help of traveler input and expert opinion, U.S. News identified the following Colorado snowmobile tours – all of which have knowledgeable and skilled guides – as the best available.

Like Colorado ski resort season, snowmobiling season typically runs from November to April, but specific tour companies' schedules may differ. Be aware that age restrictions for snowmobile operators and passengers vary among tour companies. And be sure to dress for the cold as most companies do not provide boots, scarves, neck gaiters, goggles or other gear beyond helmets.

Vail: Sage Outdoor Adventures – Adventure Snowmobile Tour

Price: Adults from $239; kids from $119 Duration: 2 hours

This excursion on a private course boasts views of several mountain ranges, the Continental Divide and peaks standing 14,000 feet. During the 100-mile ride, participants will climb 2,400 feet to admire the ski areas and alpine ridges below. Snowmobilers rave about both the stunning views and the adept guides. Outings occur daily from mid-November to early April at set times between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Prices include the use of a helmet. Other winter weather gear is available for purchase (and a limited number of snowsuits and boots are available for rental). Kids must be at least 5 years old to participate; drivers must be at least 14 years old.

In addition to private tours, Sage Outdoor Adventures also offers a Performance Snowmobile Tour, which travels a longer distance and costs more. Sage Outdoor Adventures encourages tour-takers to use their own transportation to reach their base lodge in Wolcott (about 30 miles west of Vail), but can provide pickup service in Avon, Beaver Creek or Vail at an additional charge. Note: Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Aspen: T-Lazy-7 Ranch – Maroon Bells Tour

Price: From $275 (single rider) or $375 (tandem) Duration: 2 hours

This expedition takes riders to Maroon Lake at the base of the Maroon Bells, dual 14,000-foot peaks just southwest of Aspen . They're often described as the most photographed mountains in North America. Along with the views, you'll also enjoy historical commentary from your guide about the Maroon Creek Valley. Tour-takers consistently describe guides as helpful, informative and friendly. The remarkable views also garner high marks.

From November through April, tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday starting at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Fees include use of a snowmobile and helmet. Drivers must be at least 18 years old with a driver's license; passengers must be at least 4 years old. Longer tours including lunch (featuring hamburgers made with beef from cattle raised on the T-Lazy-7 Ranch in Aspen) are also available.

Winter Park: Grand Adventures – Continental Divide Adventure

Price: From $275 (single rider) or $335 (tandem) Duration: 2 hours

As its name indicates, this tour takes snowmobilers to the Continental Divide. Its trails, which wind through forests and open meadows, approach an elevation of 12,000 feet and provide views of the Fraser Valley and Winter Park Resort.

Trips run Thursday through Sunday from November to April. There are numerous start times, with the earliest at 8:15 a.m. and the latest at 2:30 p.m. Travelers regularly call this expedition great fun and gush about both the unrivaled mountain scenery and the attentive, personable tour guides.

In addition to this excursion, Grand Adventures offers one- and three-hour snowmobile tours. On all guided tours, drivers must be at least 15 years old with a valid driver’s license or permit; those younger than 18 cannot drive with passengers and must have a legal guardian present. Passengers must be at least 4 years old. Grand Adventures is based in Winter Park, about 65 miles west of Denver .

Steamboat Springs: Thunderstruck Adventures – Pro Ride Adventure

Price: From $499 Duration: Full day

The Pro Ride Adventure Tour offers a full day of snowmobiling on a private mountain with a guide. Riders of all experience levels report that this outing lives up to its name as being truly adventurous and praise the helpful, professional guides.

The fee includes the use of a snowmobile and helmet, as well as lunch. (Discounts are available for participants who have their own machines.) An upgrade to a turbo-charged sled is available for an additional charge, as are two- and three-day packages. Complimentary shuttle service to and from Thunderstruck Adventure's shop in Steamboat Springs from area accommodations is available as well. Tours start at 9 a.m. daily throughout winter.

Leadville: White Mountain Snowmobile Tours – Performance Tour

The Performance Tour takes place at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 12,600 feet and offers glimpses of even taller mountains. Tour-takers find the Rocky Mountain scenery remarkable and the equipment top-notch. They also frequently laud the friendly and helpful guides.

Rides depart from White Mountain Snowmobile Tours' Leadville base camp – about 135 miles west of Colorado Springs – starting at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. daily during the snowmobiling season.
