Josh lambert.

I have had a Journey for about a year now that I bought used from a dealership.  I've had no issues with it until today when I tried to start it up and the key fob "was not detected" upon pushing the button.  I tried a backup key fob and got the same response from the vehicle.  After switching the battery  out on the key fob, I tried once again and the outcome did not change.

My girlfriend tried pushing the remote start from outside the vehicle and got no response whatsoever.  Then, she returned inside the vehicle and tried to start again via the push button, which gave repeat results.  While inside the vehicle, she tried the remote start button on the fob and it resulted in a clicking sound underneath the hood.  She mentioned that it said "vehicle was not in park" when it started the clicking noise.  I didn't see this personally but seen others had mentioned this as a brake pedal issue.  The clicking noise would not stop so I decided to disconnect the power.  The battery  is buried so I unfastened a nut (red wires/+ terminal) near a fuse box located above the battery  and removed the wires which stopped the clicking.  I waited awhile (a few times increasing length) before re-installing the wires but the clicking does not go away.  I can't get the vehicle into "run mode" to shift into neutral because the display is flashing on and off with the clicking sound and it didn't recognize the fob initially until that one time trying remote start.  I'm not sure where to start as from what I can put together it can be a solenoid, brake pedal sensor, bad battery , or maybe a faulty push button switch.  Furthermore, I hate throwing money at things when it doesn't fix the problem.

Sorry to hear about this... Have you tried jump starting it? The clicking is usually associated with a bad/dead  battery . Also, I'm not sure how long you left the battery unplugged, but resetting the computer usually takes about 30 minutes before the system resets itself .  Hopefully it is one of these issues, since they are the easiest to fix, if not it might be the starter or a different mechanical or electrical problem.

I had an errand to run, but got the positive battery  terminal unhooked now (rather than the jumper on fuse box ), waiting for a half hour to pass, then I'll try to reconnect the terminal and see if the clicking stops.  If so, I'll try to start the vehicle again in normal fashion and if it does not cooperate, I'll have the battery  checked out.

I figured removing a fuse box power wire would reset it, but ?maybe? the memory for the starter relay didn't power through that fuse box  and it never reset by removing the wires  I previously removed???  Not sure on the path it travels from where the clicking is coming from but hopefully dropping the battery  for a half hour stops the clicking.

As for jump starting the vehicle, I was hesitant to try jumping the vehicle with the continuous clicking.  I don't want to cause damage to either vehicle if there is some kind of wiring issues.  Out of my comfort zone, but I figured I'd at least give it a try before taking it in.

I'm with lmoore1436, clicking usually means not enough juice coming from the battery . I would personally try connecting jumper cables and see if that makes a difference and/or getting the battery  checked. Otherwise it would seem like a loose connection somewhere that would be hard to guess at without more investigating.

Sounds to me you have a bad battery .  You won't hurt anything trying to jump start the vehicle.  Dodge vehicle seem to have issue with low battery .  It causes all kinds of random issues when the cars battery isn't good.

brought the battery  to the local mechanic to get it checked out while I was at work and he said it was dead.  He had to charge it before he could test it.  Once I was off work, I went to shop and he tested it.  He said the battery  was fine.  He offered the suggestion (which Armando said) that there was a "draw" somewhere draining the battery  likely from a bad connection or something.

He mentioned taking a light tester and disconnecting the negative wire then trying to connect (wire/battery terminal) via tester.  If light activates, then I have draw somewhere and I could try pulling fuses one by one to see if the issue went away to isolate the problem.

I'm guessing the battery  terminal connections wasn't the problem as they were tight and I didn't notice a corrosion build up when I removed the battery .

If you are going to test it yourself, start with any aftermarket items installed on the vehicle (if any). Sometimes radios, amps, radar detectors, backup cameras or other added items are connected wrong, or are just a big draw for the battery. Don't forget to check the relays as well.

Replace the battery . Regardless of what the test results were, it's at least four years old and is at the end of its useful life anyway. I would be very surprised if you had an electrical drain on the car unless there was some sort of modifications made.

i agree i have already replaced my battery  in mu 2014  and since you already have it out that is half the battle, unless he did a load test on your old battery  it might not hold up.

This saved me!!  My daughter left the radio on after cleaning the car and hours later the battery was dead.  When we tried starting, it wouldn't start.  However, a clicking noise began and would not quit.  The above post about disconnecting the red battery cable worked and the clicking noise stopped.  I just didn't want the car to burn down overnight since the clicking wouldn't stop.  I have a V6 2014 Journey that I bought new in 2014.  I've not had any major problems with it, until now.  It has over 100,000 miles and I paid it off the end of last year.

What Are the Reasons Why Your Dodge Journey Won’t Start?

The reasons your Dodge Journey won’t start are a damaged car battery, a failing alternator, a defective starter, a corroded battery, and a clogged gasoline filter. Other possible causes include a faulty pump, a blown fuse, rodent damage, and bad spark plugs.

– Damaged Car Battery

Your car won’t start if you have a damaged or dead battery. If you have a dead battery, you won’t hear any sounds when you use the key normally inside the ignition. In most cases, weather-related issues drain a car battery. If the car battery is affected by extreme heat or cold, it can destroy or kill the battery and prevent your vehicle from starting.

Once you suspect the battery may be damaged or dead, you should confirm by testing the battery. Use a multimeter or hydrometer to check the DC voltage of the battery. If the reading is less than 1 volt for a 9-volt battery, it means the battery is dead.

– Failing Alternator

If you have inspected the battery and discovered that it isn’t the source of the problem, the next component to check is the alternator. The alternator is an integral component of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine that charges the battery while the engine runs. The alternator converts chemical energy to electrical energy for charging and replenishing the vehicle’s battery and other electrical components.

Thus, if the alternator stops working, the battery will eventually die. You can test if your vehicle’s alternator works using a multimeter to measure the battery’s voltage while the engine runs. If the multimeter gives a low voltage, the alternator is not working correctly.

– Defective Starter

Another reason why your car will refuse to start is if the starter is defective. The starter is the component that turns the engine over when you use the ignition. Although the average lifespan of a starter motor is between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, it can break down if the vehicle has been used for a long time.

You can test if your starter is in good condition by using a multimeter to measure the voltage of the starter with the key in the start position. If the multimeter reads a low voltage, the starter is failing and should be fixed soon. Also, you can detect a bad starter if the key makes a clicking sound when you turn it to start the engine.

– Blocked Fuel Filter

The gasoline filter is the vehicle component that prevents dirt and rust particles from mixing with the fuel so they don’t damage the engine. Although the filter doesn’t wear out like other mechanical parts, it can become clogged by dirt, dust, or airborne particles. When these materials block the filter, its permeability will drastically reduce. Thus, the fuel pressure will reduce as well.

While the engine can still work if the gasoline filter is clogged, there is a stage where the filter gets too dirty and the engine won’t function correctly. A dirty filter often causes ignition difficulty because it depletes the fuel supply going into the engine. In some cases, the blocked gasoline filter will cause the engine not to start when the key is turned in the ignition.

– Defective Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of your Dodge vehicle is responsible for conveying the right amount of fuel to the engine at a certain pressure. So, if the pump fails, the engine will not start. One of the common causes of pump failure is wear and contamination. Also, if a power contact is broken or the pump lever is damaged, the pump will malfunction.

However, before the pump stops working, it will give you signs. Symptoms like the engine breaking down regularly, the car experiencing difficulty starting, and the engine jerking indicate that you have a failing pump, which you should fix immediately.

– Corroded Battery

If there is corrosion on your battery’s contacts, it can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow, affecting the engine’s operation. The engine will no longer start properly when a battery has become corroded. Corrosion on the battery can prevent the engine from starting when the key is turned in the ignition.

To test if a corroded battery is causing the vehicle’s starting problems, you should investigate the battery’s contacts. Next, raise the rubber covers on the battery terminals and check for signs of corrosion. If you see white or silvery-green deposits on the terminals, that strongly indicates corrosion.

– Defective Remote Car Starter Battery

If your Dodge Journey uses a push start/stop button to turn on the ignition and is not starting, the problem may be due to a weak key fob battery. A weak battery renders the key fob inoperative and cannot start the vehicle. More so, if the battery is weak, the door will stop opening or closing at the push of a button.

Nevertheless, you can still start the vehicle because the battery only transmits the signal for locking and unlocking. The car must be started manually using the key, and the same applies to the doors.

– Damaged Fuse

Sometimes, a damaged fuse could be why your Dodge Durango is not starting when you turn the key. If one or more fuse inside the box is blown, the engine will not start. This is because fuses limit the electrical current flowing through wires to protect specific components. In other words, the fuse box protects the electronics within the vehicle.

If the fuse has a problem, it could affect the ignition relay, which is located inside the fuse box. The ignition relay transfers electricity from the battery to the ignition components so that you can start the car quickly, so it would help if you inspected all the fuses inside the fuse box for signs of damage.

– Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs provide the spark of electricity that ignites the combustion needed to start the vehicle. If the spark plugs are inoperative or damaged , the car will not start. Typically, the spark plugs are not affected by a defect. Instead, the problem lies with the plug connections on the ignition system.

If any plug connections come loose, the vehicle will not start, and the only remedy is to tighten it. Defective or failed spark plugs will prevent the car from starting, so they should be fixed.

How To Fix Your Dodge Journey’s Starting Problem?

You can fix your Dodge Journey’s starting problem by changing the alternator, installing a new battery, cleaning corrosion from the battery, and changing the starter. Other remedies to the problem are cleaning the gasoline filter, replacing the filter, and installing new spark plugs.

– Change the Alternator

To fix a defective alternator, discard it and replace it with a new one. First, disconnect the battery and loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place to replace the failing alternator. Take out the old alternator and install the new unit in its place. Then reconnect the battery and start the ignition to check if the alternator works correctly.

– Install a New Battery

If your car battery is dead, jumpstarting won’t work. Your only option is replacing it with a new battery. You can carry out the replacement yourself by using a socket wrench set and screwdriver. First, locate the battery under your vehicle’s hood to perform this operation.

After that, disconnect the negative and positive cables from the battery’s terminals. While doing this, ensure both terminals don’t touch each other because it will cause an electrical spark. Next, gently remove the old battery then install the new unit by connecting the cables to the battery. Test the battery by starting the engine.

– Remove Corrosion From the Battery

To fix a corroded battery, you will have to remove the corrosion from the battery. This will require you to remove the poles from the battery. The first step is to unplug the black cable from the negative pole and remove the red positive pole cable. After removing the battery, you can start cleaning the terminals.

As a precaution, when using metal pliers to remove a cable from the pole clamp, ensure you don’t touch any other vehicle parts. Once you clean the terminals, reconnect the battery and test it.

– Install New Spark Plugs

You’ll need to replace bad spark plugs with new ones for the engine to start. To replace the spark plug, first remove the plug wire and the coil-on-plug (COP) attached to the spark plug end. Next, unscrew the plug with a spark plug socket. Put the new spark plug in place and reconnect the plug wires and COP. Start the engine to test the spark plug.

– Change the Starter Motor

If the starter is the reason why your vehicle is not starting, then you should replace it with a new one. You will need a socket set and ratchet to remove the starter from the car. The first step is disconnecting the negative battery cable so you won’t experience any electrical shock while working on the starter. Then locate the starter, usually near the front of the engine on the passenger side.

After locating the starter, use the socket to loosen the two bolts holding it. Then carefully pull out the old starter from the engine and install the new starter in its place. Retighten the bolts to secure the starter and reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the new starter by turning the key in the ignition.

– Fix the Gasoline Filter

You can fix a dirty gasoline filter by cleaning it. To clean the filter, you must first locate it because the location varies for different vehicles. Also, ensure no fuel is exposed to the spray by using a clamp on the hose. Place a container under the filter to catch all the remaining fuel.

Insert a hose inside the detached filter and spray it with a special liquid so everything inside flows out. After spraying, dry the filter for about an hour, then install it back into position. However, cleaning is no longer possible if the filter is fully clogged. You will have to replace it.

– can a dodge journey be manually started.

Yes, a Dodge Journey can be manually started if the fob is dead. Turn the fob over to reveal a latch at the top back of the fob. Slide the latch to the side to remove the key and use the key you removed to unlock the door.

Can a Powertrain Malfunction Cause My Dodge Journey to Not Start?

A powertrain malfunction can indeed prevent your Dodge Journey from starting. Whether it’s due to a faulty transmission, engine, or other powertrain component, fixing powertrain malfunctions is crucial to restore functionality. Proper diagnosis by a qualified mechanic is necessary to identify the root cause and undertake the appropriate repairs. Don’t delay getting professional help to resolve the issue promptly.

Dodge Journey key fob not working – causes and how to fix it

The remote keyless system in Dodge Journey allows the driver to conveniently lock and unlock the vehicle with the press of a button. When the key fob stops working, it quickly becomes an inconvenience to manually lock and unlock the vehicle. In some cases it can even leave you stranded if the vehicle can’t detect the key and won’t let you start the engine.

Dodge Journey

The most common cause of key fob not working in Dodge Journey is dead battery. But the remote key can also stop working due to worn buttons, poor battery contact, water damage, defective key fob, receiver module issues, signal interference, dead 12 volt battery, and unpaired key requiring reprogramming.

1. Dead battery in key fob

Dead battery is the leading cause of key fob not working in Journey. Usually there are signs of weakening battery before it gives up. If the remote was working previously, but the range of the remote was gradually decreasing until it ceased to function, this indicates that the battery was wearing out.

Replace the battery

If the button cell battery in the key fob of Journey is replaced incorrectly or a battery is unsuitable, it can damage the vehicle key. Only replace drained batteries with new batteries in the same voltage, size, and specification. Make sure the battery is facing in the right direction when inserting it.

Key fob not working after replacing the battery

When purchasing a new battery for the key fob of your Journey, keep in mind that the battery may be sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore after replacement it may not work, or may not last that long. Try purchasing the battery from a store where stock moves fast. If you still can’t get the key fob to work after verifying that the battery is healthy, your key fob issues may not be due to bad battery.

Starting the engine with dead key fob battery

If your Journey has push button start/stop feature, your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery and a ‘key not detected’ alert message may be displayed in the instrument cluster. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle, the immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

2014 dodge journey push button start problems

Touch the start/stop button with your key fob and then start the engine. If it doesn’t work, then look in the owners manual for exact location of key fob placement, as it may vary depending on model.

Use spare key: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

How long does the key fob battery last?

Depending on how often you use the key fob or remote control of your Journey, the battery should last between two and four years. This is assuming the new battery you installed is healthy and its use by date is many years away.

2. Poor battery connection

The battery inside the key fob of Journey has metal retaining clips that hold the battery in position and completes the circuit. If the clips don’t have any tension, it can cause contact issues and the remote may not receive any power. Make sure the battery is firmly placed and does not move around when you shake the remote. Also make sure all the battery contacts are corrosion and dust free.

3. Water damage

If your Dodge Journey key fob has taken a bath in the soapy water of the washing machine after you forgot to take it out of your pants pocket, water damage is very likely.

Water resistant, not waterproof

Your Journey key has rubber seals which prevents the water from getting to the electronic chip inside. A splash of water or brief exposure to light rain should be fine, but exposure to excessive amount of water like submerging the key in the pool can cause the water to penetrate the seals and damage the chip. Submerging the key in ocean water at the beach can be much more damaging to key fob electronics due to highly conductive nature of salt water.

But my key fob survived water exposure?

If your Journey key fob survived a wash cycle, or a deep bath in the ocean or pool water, it doesn’t make the key fob waterproof, it means you got lucky. Exposure to excessive water increases the risk of water damage, so you shouldn’t make this a habit.

What to do in case of water damage?

If your Journey key fob stopping working after exposure to clean tap water or rain, immediately remove the battery and clean the electronic component with paper towel and let it dry fully before putting back the battery. In case of exposure to salt water, or soapy or dirty water, it is recommended to clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner. If the key fob still doesn’t work after cleaning and drying, the chip is probably fried and you will have to buy a new key.

4. Dead 12 volt battery

The remote keyless system and the central locking system in Journey require the 12 volt battery to be in healthy state to function properly. If the 12 volt battery is dead or if the electric current has been interrupted due to corrosion on the battery terminals or the ground connection, all on-board electronics will stop working.

2014 dodge journey push button start problems

In this case, you will have to manually unlock the door of your Journey with physical key. Also, the electrical accessories (e.g. headlights, fan, and infotainment system) will not function or may function poorly, and the engine will not start. Check the 12v battery and its connections.

5. Signal interference

Journey remote control signal can be disrupted by objects, poor weather conditions or transmitters on the same frequency band close to the vehicle. The remote key may work when you’re near the vehicle, but may not work from a distance. In case of severe interference, the remote may not work at all.

2014 dodge journey push button start problems

Interference signals can be caused not only by neighboring radio masts and towers, but also by unprofessionally installed satellite systems. A large part of the radio interference is caused by defects and aging effects in electrical devices and radio systems, which lead to unwanted emissions, radiation and repercussions on power and communication networks. Your Journey key fob should start working again when you leave the area of interference.

6. Reprogramming required

In rare cases, the remote key of Journey may stop working due to pairing issues. The key can be reprogrammed with an OBDII scanner. You may also be able to program a key by following a few steps, an original key is typically required for successful pairing. The instructions should be mentioned in the owners manual. If you fail to do it yourself, you may have to visit an authorized dealer for reprogramming of the key.

7. Defective key fob

If your Journey key fob stopped working after you dropped it on the floor, you may have damaged the internal chip. Or, if your key fob just stopped working one day out of the blue, in rare cases this could indicate a faulty key fob – assuming you have tried everything to fix the issue e.g. battery replacement, reprogramming and the spare key fob works.

8. Faulty receiver module

Dodge Journey has a remote keyless system receiver that receives radio frequency signals from the key fob. If none of your key fobs work, and and you can’t reprogram the keys, it is possible the receiver module has developed a fault.

You may have to perform further diagnostics to identify the faulty. The keyless entry antenna could be damaged, or the module is just not communicating with other modules on the vehicle. In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module.

9. Electronic immobilizer fault

The immobilizer is an anti-theft security system that prevents the engine from being started and the vehicle from being moved with an unauthorized vehicle key. A fault in the immobilizer system can prevent your Journey from being started. You may also see a warning light with key symbol or key not detected message in the instrument cluster.

For vehicles with an ignition lock

There is a chip in the vehicle key. The chip automatically deactivates the immobilizer if a valid vehicle key is inserted into the ignition lock. The electronic immobilizer is activated automatically when the vehicle key is removed from the ignition lock.

For vehicles with a starter button

There is a chip in the vehicle key. It is used to automatically deactivate the electronic immobilizer when there is a valid remote control vehicle key in the vehicle interior. The electronic immobilizer is automatically activated as soon as there is no valid vehicle key in the vehicle.

The engine can only be started with a genuine vehicle key that is coded correctly. You can obtain coded vehicle keys from an authorized Dodge dealer.

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

2014 dodge journey push button start problems

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located. This method will be especially useful when diagnosing a faulty remote keyless system receiver module.

2014 dodge journey push button start problems

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Journey.

Conclusion:

There are many reasons why your Dodge Journey key fob is not working. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious cause that is easy to diagnose: dead battery, which you can replace in a few minutes.

S-400 missile defense systems to start defending Moscow July 1

RIA Novosti ,

MOSCOW: S-400 missile defense systems will be put on combat duty around Moscow July 1, the commander of the Russian Air Force said Monday.

The S-400 Triumf (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) is a new air defense missile system developed by the Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.

“On July 1, one battalion of S-400 missile defense systems will be put on combat duty to defend the airspace of Moscow and Central Russia,” Colonel-General Alexander Zelin said.

Zelin said the battalion is at an Air Force range, and after range practice, the battalion, based in the Moscow Region town of Elektrostal, east of the capital, will go on active duty.

It has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), or twice the range of the MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2.

In April, Colonel-General Yury Solovyov, commander of the Air Defense Forces Special Command (former Moscow Military District Air Defense Command), said the system could also be used for limited purposes in missile and space defense, but that it is not intended to destroy intercontinental ballistic missiles.

However, he said the system is highly capable of destroying stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles with an effective range of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.

The Russian Air Defense Forces, which are part of the Air Force, currently deploy more than 30 regiments equipped with S-300 missile complexes, which will be gradually replaced with S-400 systems.

  1. Updates and the infamous 'one click no crank' issue

The problem is clearly a severe one that effects a large number of these SUV's, and should be fully addressed in order to generate some good faith between Dodge and the Journey owners.
