The best tour operators in the world: 2023 Readers' Choice Awards

Scott Dunn

It’s been a challenging few years for tour operators but the names below are in it for the long haul (as well as the short and medium), honing itineraries and managing expectations. 11 guided tour companies that offer trips around the world

For people who like traveling with like-minded people, guided tours can be the perfect way to see a new destination..

Megan duBois

Like cruising and theme park vacations , guided tours aren’t for everyone. But for people who especially enjoy meeting (and traveling with) like-minded people on vacation, guided group tours can be the perfect way to see a new destination—and make some new friends along the way.

Some guided tours are geared toward groups of a dozen or fewer, while others can accommodate 50 or more travelers. Most guided tours include accommodations and some meals. In all cases, the tour companies who operate group tours take most of the complicated planning out of the equation , leaving you to focus on simply enjoying your vacation.

The best guided tour operators

If you’re ready to give tour groups a try, consider one of these guided tour operators that rank among the very best in the world.

world best escorted tours

Leaving home and exploring a new city or region can be a bit daunting at times. Budgetary, work, and family obligations also mean that most people have a limited amount of time to travel. So how can we explore the best of the best without wasting time lost in tourist traps and empty streets?

One simple answer is by using a high-quality guided tour company. The companies on the list below were all chosen by TravelAwaits readers because they do exactly what good tours ought to do: help visitors truly experience their chosen destination.

1. ToursByLocals (Winner)

The winner for the category of guided tour companies is ToursByLocals , a Vancouver-based organization with 4,831 guides in 187 countries. The sheer scale of the expansive network of carefully curated guides means that curious travelers can find experts just about anywhere in the world.

While lots of the tours available in popular cities are general sightseeing outings, there are plenty of tours that are based around specific interests; for example, music fans visiting London can try out the London Rocks Music Tour and literary travelers can explore Paris on the Paris & the Lost Generation in the 1920s . Regardless of the tour, visitors can trust ToursByLocals’ hand-picked tour guides to show the absolute best of their cities.

2. Free Tours By Foot

As you may have guessed, Free Tours By Foot is a company that offers free walking tours. The organization is built around the pay-what-you-like concept, meaning that while the tours are free, you are able to pay the guide based on your experience. The tours are perfect for education and entertainment-oriented audiences.

Some examples of walking tours include the Beacon Hill Crime Tour in Boston, Glasgow’s Dark and Mysterious Past tour, or one of the countless free tours in Rome . The organization offers more options in pedestrian-friendly cities, but there is still a solid variety of choices in North America, Europe, and the Middle East with a few options in Oceania, India, and Asia.

3. Withlocals

One of the best ways to get to know the authentic side of a city is by visiting a friend or family member who lives there. The next best thing is Withlocals , a service that connects adventurous travelers with local residents who are passionate about their hometowns.

The broader strokes of tours are based on your interests, but you can customize your tour by communicating with your host in advance. The tours are completely private, which helps facilitate a connection between you and your local guide. Finally, with exciting destinations like Istanbul , Ho Chi Minh City , and Berlin , you can’t go wrong.

4. The Roman Guy Tours

While The Roman Guy Tours ’ name may imply that the company only operates in Rome, that is just the beginning. The company’s founder started out offering tours in Italy, but his touring philosophy was so popular with travelers that the business spread across Europe.

The Roman Guy’s “travel mantra” is based on traveling with people you care about, picking wonderful destinations, and joining interesting activities. The company also seeks to offer unique experiences that can’t be had elsewhere (e.g. night visits, accessing restricted areas, etc).

5. Secret Food Tours

The outings organized by Secret Food Tours combine local expertise with a passion for good food. Given the ever-changing nature of the restaurant world, it’s a perfect match. Looks can be deceiving, so tasting a new city with a local can ensure a positive culinary experience.

Secret Food Tours provides services across the globe, though travelers will find they have the best luck with the company when visiting capital cities. The people who manage Secret Food Tours also run Secret Tours , a branch of the business that focuses on the historical and cultural sides of cities.

6. Eating Europe

Eating Europe narrows the focus of its tours to one continent, but that still leaves hungry travelers with plenty of options. With carefully selected guides in Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Prague, and other cities, the company promises that its guests will create lasting memories by sampling the best food in town.

One of the main benefits of touring with Eating Europe is being guided into the less touristy, more authentic neighborhoods of your chosen city. This company also places an emphasis on learning about the food in context rather than simply leading guests on a quick walk between destinations.

7. Heritage Inspirations, LLC

For an in-depth exploration of New Mexico, TravelAwaits readers turn to Heritage Inspirations . This smaller, boutique guide service is focused on an artistic, cultural, human, and nature-focused approach to travel.

Whether you prefer sunrise yoga overlooking the Rio Grande Gorge, participating in a hands-on baking experience at a local Puebloan home , or delving into the topography and history of the Chaco Canyon , you’ll find an elevated travel experience with Heritage Inspirations.

8. Best Of France Tours

As one of the most popular destinations in the world, France is brimming with tour options, and according to TravelAwaits readers, Best of France Tours delivers on its eponymous promise. These luxurious tours within and near Paris are expertly led by professional guides who offer their own unique perspective on art, history, culture, and food.

Guests can get an insider look at the Louvre or Musée d’Orsay from an art historian, taste Champagne in the countryside with locals, or stop by the Palace of Versailles. Adjustments and accommodations can be made to itineraries based on the preferences of the travel group.

9. Fat Tire Tours

Fat Tire Tours assures potential guests that they take care of the details so that travelers can focus on having fun, memorable experiences. While the company began with bicycle tours, they have since expanded to walking and Segway tours.

Fat Tire’s mission is to provide tourists with fun experiences, but they also try to help preserve their host environments through a focus on sustainable travel practices. Popular examples of tours include a beer-tasting pub crawl in London’s West End and a VIP cathedral and rooftop tour in Florence.

Taipei City, Taiwan

10. Intrepid Urban Adventures

It can be hard to get a sense of a city in a short amount of time, but Intrepid Urban Adventures has set the ambitious goal of providing travelers with a deep dive into the hidden gems of a city in just a day. To narrow down the options, this company offers themes like active adventures, social impact, and off-the-beaten-path.

From Boston to Bali and Toronto to Taipai, Intrepid Urban Adventures helps the curious escape from the same old landmarks to find exciting, out-of-the-ordinary experiences. By taking care of all of the logistics, the company also ensures that guests can focus on the fun of the destination rather than how to read the bus schedule.

Around the World Tours & Travel

Around the World Attractions & Landmarks Guide

  • Winter vs Summer Weather:   Since your tour around the world is likely to cross hemisphere lines more than once, you may experience warm highs and icy lows during your trip — bring clothing that can layer easily.
  • Shoes:   Footwear can easily become a packing challenge since it can take up a lot of space in suitcases. Choose shoes according to the planned activities and terrains. Pack a versatile selection: a pair for relaxation, one for hiking, another for city strolls, and one for a more refined option.
  • Dress Like a Local:   The beauty of a trip around the world is the opportunity to visit many far-flung places with diverse cultures and ways of life. You may encounter many different cultures, some with specific dress expectations. For example, in most Middle Eastern countries, expect to dress modestly—cover shoulders and legs and keep a scarf handy for covering your head. A similar dressing is also a good rule for touring many religious establishments.

There's other incredible wildlife here too - whales can sometimes be spotted off the isles’ shores.

With its chic restaurants, hilltop villages, and stately lakeside homes, it's no wonder Lake Como has been the stomping ground of aristocrats, artists and celebrities for centuries. Nowadays it attracts tourists from around the world who are drawn by its fine hotels and divine lakeside restaurants.

A stay on Lake Como wouldn’t be complete without a boat trip. You can sit back and relax as the views of quaint lakeside ports, pretty villages and magnificent mountain scenery pass you by. Another way to soak in the scenery of the stunning surrounding mountains is to hop on a train.

You can even appreciate the beauty of neighbouring Switzerland with a day trip to swish St Moritz on the Bernina Railway. This enchanting train ride will take you along the highest railway and enjoy the pristine Alpine views.

Glide through the majestic Scottish Highlands on an iconic steam train

best tours 2023

Along with Edinburgh and its imposing castle and scenic Loch Lomond, the Highlands are perhaps Scotland's most memorable destination.

Their dramatic mountains and wide, glassy lochs have taken on an almost mythical quality, and inspired writers, artists and filmmakers for centuries.

It’s hard to pick just one part of the Highlands to visit, so any trip there is best planned with the idea of packing in as many of its glorious natural and historic features as possible – like mighty Ben Nevis, the massive Glenfinnan Viaduct overlooking Loch Sheil (glimpsed in two Harry Potter films), and the tranquil Loch Katrine.

One of the best ways to see the Highlands is by travelling one of the region's railways. The Fort William to Mallaig railway is frequently voted the world’s greatest, passing rugged scenery of craggy coastlines and inland lochs

You can visit some of the Highlands' most scenic spots on Good Housekeeping’s tour through the Highlands, which includes a nostalgic ride on the Jacobite steam train along the Fort William to Mallaig railway line. You'll also hear from Scottish broadcaster Kirsty Wark, who'll give an exclusive talk and Q&A.

Marvel at the magic of the Swiss Alps

glacier express opweg naar sankt moritz passeert het beroemde landwasser viaduct dit viaduct is een onderdeel van de albulabahn deze spoorlijn behoort tot het unesco wereld erfgoed

The Swiss Alps might not be the world's tallest mountain range, but they’re certainly one of the most beautiful. They're stunning in all seasons; in winter, fresh dustings of snow make the towns dotted along the Alpine valleys look like something out of a Christmas fairytale, and in spring, the mountains and valleys burst into colourful bloom.

Any visit there should take in picturesque Interlaken, in a narrow valley between two lakes, with an unspoilt feel. Timber-clad buildings line the streets, and it’ll give you a real sense of life up in the Alps.

From there you can make your way to the emerald waters of Lake Thun, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and a 12th-century castle, and the forests of the Bernese Oberland region, also nearby.

Complete your trip with a visit to the summit of Mount Rigi - where you'll be rewarded with sweeping views across glittering Lake Lucerne below.

Ride the Glacier Express through the Swiss Alps with Good Housekeeping. You'll also take the train to Rigi Kaltbad and enjoy a cable car ride to Weggis for panoramic Alpine views.

Northumberland's countryside is some of the most spectacular in the United Kingdom. England's northernmost county is also an official Dark Sky Park and one of the best places in the UK for marvelling at the constellations.

There are very low levels of light pollution, meaning the region has the most ‘pristine dark skies’ in England, and on a clear night you will be able to spot thousands of stars, the Milky Way and even the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye.

As well as these stunning skies, Northumberland offers landscapes of rolling, heather-clad hills and moorlands, and charming villages of cobble-stoned streets and cosy pubs, like the pretty market town of Hexham.

Northumberland is also home to parts of Hadrian's Wall, the largest Roman archaeological feature in Britain and one of the country’s most iconic historic attractions.

Good Housekeeping is offering a stargazing trip to Northumberland, where you'll visit two observatories with expert local astronomer, Richard Darn, and explore some of the county's dramatic landscapes.

Bologna is known and loved for its traditional alleyway bars, buzzing piazzas and Renaissance buildings. But the city is really set apart by its food. It has a hard-earned reputation as Italy's gastronomic capital, and is often nicknamed la grassa - 'the fat one'.

As well as its signature pasta dish - spaghetti Bolognese - the city is famed for its spiced mortadella sausage, tortellini dishes and its sharp and nutty Parmigiano Reggiano. If you venture out to nearby Modena, you can treat yourself to some more of Italy's most beloved foods, including tangy balsamic vinegar. There's also a wealth of idyllic countryside to explore in the wider Emilia-Romagna region, with gently rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and orchards. All in all, it offers all the ingredients for a quintessential Italian escape. Join Good Housekeeping for a foodie tour of Bologna and Modena, with visits to several local food producers including a local Parmesan factory, and a Balsamic vineyard, and get a hands-on cooking lesson in Modena.

Our Readers' Favorite 15 Tour Operators in 2021

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

Linking up with the right tour operator can take an amazing trip and turn it into a trip of a lifetime . This might seem like magic, but their in-the-know expertise and long-standing relationships open the doors for the seemingly impossible — a private Jeep safari with a professional tracking team in the depths of Torres del Paine or one-on-one cooking classes from a chef that runs a Michelin-starred restaurant in the south of France. And if any group has traversed the world enough to discern the best tour operators out there, it's the readers of Travel + Leisure .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

The companies that made the list have the skills and connections to create itineraries that reflect their clients' personal interests. No. 3 VBT Bicycling Vacations curates two-wheeled trips all over the globe . One reader said, "Their staff make all the difference." No. 2 Mountain Lodges of Peru puts together highly personalized trekking adventures to Machu Picchu. As another reader exclaimed, "This is the way to visit Machu Picchu!"

But at the top of the list is Quasar Expeditions. Though primarily known for its cruises (the company won the small-ship ocean cruises category this year), it also operates a roster of dynamic safari-style excursions in South America. Read on to find out what sets it apart and which other companies join it on this year's list of the best tour operators in the world.

1. Quasar Expeditions

Quasar Expeditions is for adventurers. The highly specialized itineraries are designed to make guests feel like they're James Cook or Charles Darwin. "Quasar Expeditions' guides are the ultimate, passionate gatekeepers to the Galápagos Islands," one reader said. "Their enthusiasm and love of the islands and the wildlife encourages you to share in their passion and desire to conserve the natural beauty and habitat of the area while still allowing low-impact tourism." Another raved, "Excellent isn't a high enough rating to describe our experience with Quasar Expeditions. Extraordinary in every way!" And while Quasar is best known for its Galápagos trips, it gets high marks for its Patagonia itineraries, which takes guests into the best parts of Chile's Torres del Paine and Argentina's Los Glaciares — two of South America's most spectacular national parks.
