It also served as a starting and ending point for traditional boating. Quite a picturesque view out there to capture yourself in. This Ghat is the centre with 12 ghats there in each direction. Moreover, it’s believed that one can wash off one’s sins and misfortunes by bathing in Vishram Ghat. 

Dwarkadhish Temple

Just near the Ghat you will find this beautiful architect which is open till 10.30 in the morning and reopens in the evening. It’s famous for its ornate construction and murals. Bhuteshwar Mahadev

This one is the oldest temple in the city where Lord Shiva in the form of Shiva Lingam is worshipped. It is believed that Bhuteshwar Mahadev has protected Brajwasis from demons and this pious Temple was built to keep the evil forces away from Mathura. Everybody around leaned in devotion and the enchanting all over you is a pure magic one can witness. Banke Bihari has a unified form of Radha Krishna. Devotees here will be large in number, actually uncountable. This temple is always full of hustle and rushes to reach the idols for Darshan. 

This is the most crowded place in the whole of Vrindavan and the most happening one too. The vibe there feels like a string pulling you closer to the temple every second. 

Pro Tip – Do not wear glasses, scarves loose, or beanie-like stuff as this place is full of monkeys snatching it all from you and you will have to get It back torn or destroyed only. Don’t hang easy-to-snatch purses as well. Keep Parshad safe too.

Last for day one is the ultimate dive into spirituality, serenity and where your soul will feel like dancing. Reach there by 7.30 to witness the enchanting soul enrichment experience. The music, the Bhajans and the devotees dancing in joy are all magic in the air there. Iskcon is there in most of the cities but Vrindavan, the home of the love of Radha Krishna, has a breathtaking view. Visit the temple to vibe along with the devotees, then take a tour of the museum within the temple itself. Later there is a segment devoted to the founder of Iskcon, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. After the whole visit join the dance of divinity out there in Iskcon. 

After spending a beautiful evening there, have your dinner in Govindam itself for the good quality food. Taste the bhakti and the food simultaneously in Iskcon while you mark the day’s end. 

Go to bed early as the next day starts early! 

Embark your Day 2 with Aarti at Iskcon only. Timing – 4.30 am, reach early for more time in there and leave from there as soon as it gets over to witness the doors opening of Nidhivan. This is a wholesome experience here in Nidhivan witnessing the changes that occurred while the temple was closed. As soon as the doors to the temple open, the priest there shows you the eaten food and other stuff evidencing the night Maha Raas happened while the van was closed. It is believed that all the trees are the Gopies , Krishna performs Maha Raas with them. Radha is worshipped there and the common enchanting you will hear there is “ Radhe Radhe Shyam Milade!”

Enjoy the early morning chilled environment of the Ghat on the sacred Yamuna with devotees bathing in there. Light the diyas in the river, talk to locals and live the vibe of Vrindavan.

This Ghat is where Lord Krishna killed dangerous Keshi sent by Kansa. Visit 12 other ghats while boating there. 

Pro Tip – Visit the Ghat early morning and then a few temples and come back to the ghat for boating. While boating ask your rider to take you in the Yamuna where you can get down from the boat and enjoy walking in the freezing water. In the months like December and January, you will find Seagulls too which is the most enchanting scene to witness over Yamuna. 

Govind dev Ji

Next after visiting Keshi Ghat is Govind Dev Ji. This temple was constructed in 1590 by King Man Singh of Amer. In 1670, during the reign of Aurangzeb, it was plundered. Later, in the first half of the 18th century, Raja Sawai Jai Singh established the idol of Govind Dev Ji in Jaipur. 

The architecture of this temple is different from other Hindu temples, it is more like a Haveli style witnessing the mix of Hindu and Arabic architectural styles. Also, unlike most of the Hindu Temples, it doesn’t have scenes depicted on the walls of the temple. 

Rangji Temple

Rangji temple, next in places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, is a replica of the southern temple in South India. It has three Attractions other than the temple itself, known as, Vahan Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Leela Mahal presenting the ancient stuff. 

The biggest temple and the calmest one in the Vrindavan is this temple. It has got the Marathi essence, Southern essence and the Uttar Pradesh essence altogether. This was a temple made by someone anonymously and donated to Swami Rangacharya after whose name it is still known. Shri Rangnath temple is the true witness of devotion and selfless bhakti setting an example.

Gopeshwar Mahadev

Followed by Rangji, visit the divine temple of Lord Shiva. The vibe near this temple is incomparable. Step into the temple with a beautiful flower basket available outside and take the blessing of Shiva while pouring water And flowers over the Shiva Lingam. 

Talk to Nandi after the divine experience of Shivling offerings. Whisper your wishes in the ears of Nandi. 

It is believed that one night Sharad Purnima, Radha Rani and Gopis got along with Lord Shiva and he expressed his wish to be a part of Raas Leela. Being a male he was not permitted by Vrinda Devi. In this wish, Shiva started worshipping Radha Rani and finally got permission. Finally, he has to emerge as a gopi to be a participant in the Raas Leela. Moreover, Krishna being a devotee of Lord Krishna recognized him and named him Gopeshwar.

Popularly Known as Bansi Vat Maha Raas Temple, this is next on the list of must-visit places in Mathura and Vrindavan. Small and the calmest place there in Vrindavan announcing the love and devotion towards the Maha Raas of Lord Krishna. There is that tree under which he used to play his flute and the magical sound used to attract people there. With depictions all over that place, it feels like happening there at that moment itself. It also has a Charan Mandir , founded in 1820 by Acharya Shri Girdhari Sharan Dev. The other Mandir was built By King Oyal with Radha Krishna idols there. 

Radha Raman ji

After spending a handful of half an hour in Banshi Vat, reach Radha Raman temple by 10.10 am to witness the opening of the curtains and the grand Aarti initiation. The vibe there is amazing, serenity all around in a crowded yet tranquil environment.

Shri Radha Madan Mohan Ji

Next in this line is the Madan Mohan Ji temple, which is quite far from all the above-mentioned temples. After these temples and a boat ride at Kashi, one can visit this temple. It is believed to have been constructed by the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, 5000 years back. Later, Advaita Acharya founded it at the base of an old Banyan tree and entrusted the worship of Madana Mohan to his disciple, Purusottama Chaube. 

During the Mughal invasion, the idol from this temple was taken to Jaipur by King Jai Singh and later shifted to Karauli by King Gopal Singh. It is said to be the exact resemblance of Krishna from the waist down. It is traditional Hindu, Nagara-style architecture. Also, the last one is for Vrindavan.

Govardhan Parikrama

After done with all the Vrindavan by 1 pm, the next activity is Govardhan Parikrama. It is divided into two segments: Badi Parikrama has three spots and second is Choti Parikrama has four spots on the way. In total, it is 23 km, with two options again, either to do it by walking or use a rickshaw which will be easily available nearby. It takes almost 7-8 hours barefoot and 3 hours if you take the latter option. 

This is the Parikrama of Govardhan Hill. As per mythology, Lord Krishna lifted this hill with his little finger to save the people of the region from the wrath of Inder Dev, the God of Rain. 

Starting with the Badi Parikrama –

• Daanghati (Girraj Ji) 
• Poonchrri ka Lautha 
• Mukharvind Temple 

The next is Choti Parikrama – 

• Chaitanya Mahaprabhu 
• Radha Kund 
• Kusum Sarovar

End your Day 2 with this and a wholesome dinner followed by a walk in the local market. 

The next day starts with visiting the old lanes of Gokul. Start with Chaurasi Khamba Temple where Bal Krishna’s sequels are resonated. It has 84 pillars where the brothers, Krishna and Balaram spent their childhood. 

Next in line is the Holy sand of Raman Reti, located around 2-3 km from Gokul. It is the San where Krishna spent his childhood playing in there. In Dwapar Yuga, he used to go there to graze the cows. Also, there is a park next to it pulling you closer to the natural beauty and an inhabitant of deer and ducks. In this place Holi is played with the sand, not the colours. 

Finally, visit the Brahmand Ghat. The story   behind this is once Krishna ate the soil and when Yashoda came to know about it he forced him to open his mouth to let the soil out and witnessed the whole universe in there, aka Brahmand in Hindi. Hence, there is this Ghat with a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan for a perfect weekend

Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born and raised, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh . At its centre lie the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.

Getting there

A 60km drive from Agra airport, Mathura lies four hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. Those arriving by train can disembark at Mathura Junction.

The best season to visit is in early winter, when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. This year, Janmashtami falls on 6 and 7 September. During the festivities, the streets are filled with dance and processions, and temples across Braj are lit up and decorated. You can also time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Holi, when the streets of Mathura come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.

Where to stay in Mathura and Vrindavan

While Mathura offers a range of hotels such as The Lalita Grand ( doubles from Rs4,950*, book here ), many chose to use Vrindavan as their base. Thanks to a no-phone policy, a dense silence pervades this space, so you can retreat from the bustle of the day for a meditative evening.

Where to eat in Mathura and Vrindavan

MVT Restaurant has an expansive multicuisine menu . Delhi-based yoga instructor Niyati Karir, a frequent visitor, recommends the restaurant’s wood-fired pizza followed by blueberry cheesecake or chocolate cake with a side of cream. Govinda’s Restaurant is another popular choice. The restaurant is housed at ISKCON temples around the world, including the one in Vrindavan, and serves a buffet as well as an à la carte menu. There’s also Dasaprakash for South Indian fare and 11 FLOWERS Rooftop Café for a breezy evening meal.

Visit Krishna’s birthplace

Of the places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan temple complex in Mathura is a must. It is believed to have been built at the exact location where lord Krishna was born. It consists of the Keshavdeva temple, Garbha Griha shrine and Bhagavata Bhavan along with a steep tank called the Potra Kund. Observe the marble pavilions and spacious verandahs, and keep an eye out for the prison cell, built under the structure, where Krishna was born to parents Devaki and Vasudeva. When the temple complex came up, the inner sanctum was constructed right above the famed prison.

Trek up Govardhan Hill near Mathura

A six-hour circuitous trek in the town of Govardhan takes you to the top of this eponymous 80ft-tall sandstone hill. On your way, take a dip in the famed Radha Kund and Shyam Kund by temples steeped in Krishna lore. Look out for the stone cenotaphs while crossing the Kusum Sarovar lake, and for Giriraj Temple—the most popular temple here. Karir shares that the trek is just as much about the fellow travellers. “You’ll come across devotees who take the circumambulation two to three times a day, while saints travel with a cart to eat and sleep throughout the day and night.” If you are lost, the saints make for excellent guides, Karir says, as they are well educated in multiple languages as well as the scriptures of the Vedas and the Upanishads. Alternatively : Swap out the trek for the nearby town of Barsana, said to be the home of Krishna’s beloved, Radha. Just an hour from Mathura, the town is accessible via bus. Barsana is surrounded by four sacred peaks and topped by the Ladliji Temple.

Lift your head up in Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura

Ornate murals adorn this shrine in Mathura where Lord Krishna, in his manifestation as Dwarkadhish, sits in the form of a black marble idol. Visit this temple to decipher stories of his life through the stunning ceiling paintings. Entry to the premises is allowed from two gates, which lead to the two-storey structure fronted by an open courtyard flooded with pilgrims. Every year on Janmashtami, the temple organises the popular Krishna Janmotsav. Rituals and ceremonies carry on throughout the day, beginning with the Mangal Aarti at 7am when devotees can get the first glimpse of the lord. Spend the day witnessing rajbhog—the main food offering, shringar—the dressing up of lord Krishna, and utthapan—waking up the lord with perfume and fruits, among other things.

Dive into history at Kans Qila, Mathura

Said to be the home of the demon king Kansa, the maternal uncle of Krishna, the fort Kans Qila lies in majestic ruins today. The walls reveal intricacies of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, narrating stories of the various rulers who took over its care over centuries. The monument dates back to the time of the Mahabharata, but was restored in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh of Amber. Visit the palatial fort for a dose of history and portraits against a ’grammable backdrop.

Visit the temple to admire the stunning architecture and listen to local lores that surround one of the oldest temples in Vrindavan.

Perambulate across Vrindavan

There's no better way to get in touch with the heartbeat of this town. The Vrindavan Parikrama is a 13km long route snaking through the town that pilgrims cover on foot . Take off on the trail early in the morning, and you’ll be joined by the devout and the curious, welcomed by locals and blessed by priests on the way as you walk past temples and houses, bylanes and markets and the mighty Ganga. The route can be completed in about three hours, and is commonly covered barefoot.

Trail the seven Goswami temples, Vrindavan

Over the course of many years, the six main goswamis or disciples of Lord Krishna established seven sacred shrines across Vrindavan. “Each consecrated deities of the lord and gave them the names they lovingly addressed him with,” says Karir. Visit the thus- named Radha Damodar Temple, Radha Gokulananda Temple, Radha Gopinath Temple, Radha Shyamsundar Temple, Radha Raman Temple, Radha Govindadeva Temple and Radha Madanmohan Temple for rich oral narratives and Vrindavan’s earliest temple architecture. No two temples seem the same. The smoke and honking of the road give way to the smell of chandan and the vibrations of kirtan in some of these shrines, while at others you can only hear the shuffling of the faithful kneeling before the lord.With a rickshaw steering you through the busy streets, the trail takes up to three hours with enough time to stop for a cup of tea by the River Yamuna.

Marvel at the grandeur of Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, Vrindavan

On the way back, visit the grand ISKCON Temple built in 1975 by Srila Prabhupada, founder of the ISKCON movement. The marble archway resounds with chants of Krishna, and ushers you in the main temple built around a tamal tree. Under its cool green shade, women thread necklaces of dry fruit to offer the deity. Attractions abound the premises, with book stalls, a museum , eateries and a guesthouse where you can learn, eat and stay. If you’re on time, you can catch the Raj Bhog aarti at 12pm right before the temple closes for the afternoon. Be careful to find a spot beforehand, for as the bells begin ringing, devotees are spread across the courtyard—some lost in a dance of devotion, some singing joyfully. With a mic in hand, one by one they take over to devote their song to the lord as the afternoon meal is served to the idols before being shared with the devotees as prasadam.

Hold your breath at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

A trip to Brajbhoomi is incomplete without a visit to one of its most visited temples. Steer through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the lord’s idol at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. It is believed that the sight of the idol of Shri Krishna in his childhood form is a harbinger of good luck, which is why even the streets of Keshi Ghat, right in front of the temple , remain flooded with pilgrims even before the temple opens. The curtain lifts only for a few moments, but reveals a breathtaking image adorned in hefty ornamentation and divine energy. After the visit, head to the basil forest Nidhivan, where the extant idol of Bankey Bihari was originally consecrated.

Wonder at the mystery of Nidhivan, Vrindavan

Just a few minutes beyond Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, a street segues off the main road into a labyrinth of dingy shops and sandstone houses. On every corner sit mendicants draped in orange, their tumbis delivering enticing tunes full of love. It is said that the grounds of this basil forest should be entered with the right foot to herald good luck. A criss-crossed cane tunnel takes you through a forest of trees. Watch out for monkeys and hold on to your spectacles while you cross the Rang Mahal temple, where Radha is believed to visit every night. Apocryphal stories relate that makeup and ornaments are left here behind locked doors every night, only to be found used the next morning. The temple shuts at 5pm while the forest is closed off after dark, but as the legend goes, that’s when Krishna and Radha visit and the trees dance in coquetry.

Gorge on street food by Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan

As dusk begins to settle over the glistening river, bonfires are lit across the shore. Some light up the dingy food shacks teeming with locals, some cook the street food–all exuding an orange glow against the night sky. Keshi Ghat and the adjacent Loi Bazaar along the Yamuna is where the pious head for morning ablutions and the foodies head for culinary explorations. Gorge on samosas and rabri, kulhad chai and aloo chaat here, and make sure to stop by Shri Brijwasi for peda, the local favourite. Every day at 6am and 4.30pm a special hour-long aarti takes place on the waters, and hundreds of diyas are left floating. You can catch a boat to the other side of the river for an unobstructed view. Priests and disciples sit in boats, criss-crossing saris as a way of draping the goddess Yamuna, while pilgrims in other boats make offerings of milk, flowers and incense.

Watch the light show at Prem Mandir, Vrindavan

This 54-acre site developed by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat has enough to keep you occupied, with educational centres and pillarless satsang halls. The temple is a stunning example of Nagara architecture carved out of Italian marble. Post sunset, the structure’s imposing facade is illuminated by a dance of colourful lights, and a musical fountain show commences at 7.30pm.

The principal deity stands in a ‘Tribhanga’ posture, tilted at three angles. ii. Madan Mohan Temple

The Madan Mohan temple is a 5000-year-old temple built in honor of the Madan Mohan deity at the root of an ancient banyan tree. The principal deity, Lord Madan Mohan is a name for the Hindu god Krishna. He is at the central altar with his main consort Radha on one side and Lalita Gopi on the other side. The temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm in winter and till 9.30 pm in summer months.

iii. Radha Madan Mohan Temple

The Shri Radha Mohan temple is a popular tourist attraction in Vrindavan. It’s Nagra’s style of architecture that is very impressive. The temple overlooks the holy Yamuna River and stands at 50 feet close to the Kaliya Ghat . The temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm in winter and till 9.30 pm in summer months.

Gokul is located at a distance of 16 km from Mathura. As per the famous belief, Lord Krishna spent his childhood at this place. This makes it an important pilgrimage place. Visiting Gokul during the Janmashtami festival is one of the best things to do for tourists because the city comes to life at that time. There are various places to visit in Gokul like Chourasi Khambha (84 pillars) also known as Nand Maharaja’s house, the mud temple, Brahmand Ghat, etc.

Barsana is a historical place and as per the beliefs, it is the birthplace of Goddess Radha. Mathura Vrindavan: Best Places To Visit & Things To Do in Krishna’s Land

Do you know Vrindavan will have the world’s tallest temple by 2026? Not only that, it’d supposedly be the costliest temple in the world with an expense of approximately ₹300 crores!

That’d be an architectural marvel, a sight to adore when it is ready.

But Mathura and Vrindavan have yet many reasons to visit now. And in this post, we intend to show you those exact reasons and how beautiful and soul-satisfying this place is. We’ll list out the places you can visit, how you can plan the trip, the famous local sweet-dish Peda, and more.

The birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura, is a pilgrimage that hosts tourists and travelers visiting all year long. You’ll see disciples coming from all over the world, not just from India.

Planning The Trip

We visited Mathura Vrindavan in January 2021. The COVID effect had somewhat slowed down, and it was a perfect time.

We were already done exploring Agra and around ; Mathura was next in the lineup. Mathura is roughly a 2-hour bus ride away from Agra and easily accessible. 

Further, Vrindavan is a suburb of Mathura district and is approximately half an hour away from the city center. You can either stay in Mathura or Vrindavan. Nonetheless, all points of interest around Mathura are well connected.

10 Places To Visit in Mathura Vrindavan

We barely had four days to explore Mathura. And like I said, it was inevitable that we wouldn’t be able to cover everything.

Here are the places we covered. We are listing the places we visited in Mathura first.

1. Vishram Ghat

Legends have it that this is the place where Lord Krishna rested after killing Kansa. It makes sense because Kansa Kila is nearby.

It was the first place we visited after passing through the meshy streets of Mathura. The calming and soothing Yamuna river flows by the Ghat. There are temple bell chimes, hopping monkeys, sages, and devotees arriving to perform their religious duties.

You can take a boat ride and immerse yourself in the holy waters of Yamuna. If you want to soak in the peace, we recommend visiting Vishram Ghat early in the morning.

2. Dwarkadheesh Temple

Situated next to Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadheesh Temple is one of the oldest and highly revered temples in Mathura. The Rajasthani-style entrance gate, paintings depicting Krishna’s life, and the temple’s astonishing architecture are enough for you to get lost in the devotion of Krishna.

The temple’s location is in the narrow lanes of Mathura, and it is perhaps the best idea to walk. Do attend morning or evening Aarti!

3. Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple

Lord Shiva’s form, Bhuteshwar Mahadev, is also referred to as Kotwal, aka Chief Police Office/Protector of Mathura, and this temple is devoted to Him. It is believed that without getting permission from Bhuteshwar Mahadev, one can’t do any deeds inside the city.

There’s also a Shaktipeeth in the temple complex where a lock of hair of Goddess Sati fell.

The temple is approximately 1.5 km from Mathura Junction railway station and about 500 meters from the bus station. One should visit Bhuteshwar Mahadev as it’s one of the temples not devoted to Lord Krishna.

4. Shri Krishna Janm Bhoomi

This temple complex is the most revered, built around the prison where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. Devotees visits from all over the world and the number only increases during special occasions.

After getting blessings from Bhuteshwar Mahadev, we walked for another thirty minutes to reach Krishna Janm Sthan/Bhoomi temple.

According to scholars, the original temple was destroyed and looted by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. A mosque was built on the plinth, which still stands. The temple architecture you see today is new, completed in 1982. 

Inside, you’ll find life stories of Krishna, temples, and shows depicting the influence of the Lord. It’s a good time to stop, sit for a while, and be lost in the reveredness!

5. Birla Temple

Also known as Gita Mandir, the Birla temple sits on Mathura-Vrindavan road. The temple is devoted to the Lakshmi Narayan avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Jugal Kishore Birla of the Birla Family built this temple in the memory of his parents. The temple architecture is modern and is made of red sandstone. The inscriptions on the pillars read the whole Bhagavad Gita.

There’s a funny story attached to visiting this temple. We were all tired after returning from the Janm Sthan temple, but we had to visit the Birla temple as per our plan.

The rush and dirt from walking the raw streets of Mathura had taken away our energy. There was no direct bus, and the tuk-tuk was charging way too high (we had a super low budget, to be honest).

We were almost ready to give up, and suddenly a Tempo arrived. The guy was shouting and calling for the places. And as we told Birla Temple, he nodded, and our whole world turned slow. We fitted our backs into the backs of that Tempo and finally achieved what we’d set to do. And took this weird selfie as well:

6. Banke Bihari Temple

Okay, so up until now, we were technically in Mathura. Now let’s explore some temples of Vrindavan.

The next day, we visited the Banke Bihari Temple. Another highly revered Hindu temple is dedicated to Krishna. It was built in 1864 by Swami Haridas , the guru of famous singer Tansen.

The temple resides in a narrow location, and you’ll pass through the local streets of Vrindavan to reach here. There are loudspeakers hooked on poles instructing guidelines to follow while visiting the temple. Every street bustles with different items, each giving the expression of Krishna somehow.

7. Radha Vallabh Temple

Situated near Banke Bihari temple, Radha Vallabh temple is dedicated to Radha, a Hindu goddess and consort of Krishna. There’s no deity of Radhaji inside the temple, but a crown is put beside the Lord Radha Vallabh (Krishna), portraying Radha. It was built by the Radha-Vallabh Sect, which emphasizes the worship of Radharani.

The temple is peaceful in inexplicable ways and is a must-visit. It is also situated between the narrow lanes of Vrindavan.

8. ISKCON Temple

Also known as Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir, this temple was built in 1975 by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The beige-colored temple with white marble is architecturally magnificent. It is one of the most peaceful temples, where you can easily spot foreigners and Indians humming the hymns praising Lord Krishna.

It is situated a 10-minute ride away from the Banke Bihari temple. It sits near the Yamuna river’s banks, where Krishna and Balarama used to herd their cows.

9. Prem Mandir

Situated at 5-minutes away from ISKCON Temple, Prem Mandir is a relatively modern-architectured temple that opened in February 2012. The presiding deities are Radha-Krishna on the ground floor and Sita-Ram on the first floor.

The temple architecture is massive, and we liked the life-size sculptures showing different Ras Leelas of Krishna all around the temple’s garden. You should visit it at night to see these tableaus in more vivid colors.

If you call yourself photogenic, be sure to get some good clicks with this beautiful temple after taking the blessings.

10. The Mystical Nidhivan

We were waiting for this place to come. It had influenced us so much with its mystical stories that we couldn’t afford to miss this place, called Nidhivan. It’s not a typical van or forest at present but a group of trees believed to be nothing but forms of Gopis. 

It is believed that Krishna performs Ras Leelas with Radha, and these trees turn into Gopis (humans) in the night, even today. Nobody can see them, and the one who tries to do so either goes blind, or something happens, due to which that person can’t express what they saw. Therefore, the complex is emptied by dusk, and no one can stay inside after that.

Nidhivan is situated in another set of Mathura’s narrow lanes. There’s a temple inside the Nidhivan called Rang Mahal.

Visiting Gokul Govardhan

Team Misfit spent around three days scouring the Mathura city, mostly on foot. On these days, we had used public toilets and restrooms, which are available in most parts of the city and around the attractions.

In terms of cleanliness, we felt the city had more to do. For example, Yamuna seems polluted, and lots of plastic bags are lying in even the main parts of the city. There should be a dustbin at frequent intervals. 

However, we are optimistic that authorities are actively working on the issue, and a few years later, people will have the consciousness.

Mode of Transport Between Attractions

Traveling between attractions and temples is easy. You can easily cover most Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, and Gokul temples on foot. However, you’ll need public transport to travel between Vrindavan, Govardhan, and Gokul.

Tuk-tuk and shared auto are readily available for Vrindavan and Gokul from Mathura. Since Govardhan is around 50 km, you can get a bus from the highway or the bus stand. City buses also travel through these places at a regular interval.

Mathura Junction railway station (MTJ) lies in the city, only a few kilometers away from the city center. You can find trains to MTJ from major railway stations in India.

When visiting the hill, you can explore interesting places such as Mukharvind, Mansi Ganga, and Daan Ghati.

According to history, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill with one finger during his childhood to protect the village of Mathura from fierce rainstorms and thunderstorms. This act sanctified the hill and devotees now visit it on Govardhan Puja and Guru Purnima. They show their devotion by walking barefoot for 23 km around the mountain. After saving the village, Lord Krishna instructed everyone to worship the hill which is why Govardhan Puja falls one day after Diwali. It's a tranquil and must-visit place!

Krishna was born in Mathura but spent his childhood in Gokul with his foster parents, Nand Rai and Yashoda. In Gokul, you can find many places that offer a glimpse of Krishna's early years. One significant spot is Nand Bhawan, a large mansion where Krishna and his brother Balaram grew up. It's situated on a hill, offering stunning views of the surroundings and making it a perfect spot for photography. Today, you can still visit the place where little Krishna played with his friends and where Yashoda fed him his favourite food, butter.

Kans Qila is an ancient fortress in Mathura prominently situated by the peaceful Yamuna River. It's dedicated to Kans, Lord Krishna's maternal uncle. Found near Krishna Ganga Ghat and Gau Ghat, this fort is a favourite tourist spot. It's a blend of Hindu-Muslim architecture even though it's in a state of disrepair, tourists still flock to it. This gigantic fort, also known as Purana Qila of Mathura, dates back to the Mahabharat era and boasts strong, fortified walls. It was refurbished by Raja Man Singh of Amber in the 16th century. Then, Raja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur ordered the construction of an observatory, though there was no sign of it at the fort. The main attraction of this fortress is a brilliant mix of Hindu and Islamic styles, is the audience hall divided into three separate sections.

The Kusum Sarovar is a beautiful sandstone reservoir that's a true relic of the past. It's known for its flight of stairs leading down into the pond. Legend has it that the reservoir was named after one of Radha's servants - Kusum. It's a great spot for a refreshing swim in the summer. Top 8 Places To Visit In Mathura

The birth place of Lord Krishna, Mathura is an ancient city of India known for its various monasteries of the Hindu religion and various pilgrim spots and temples. The city is one of the oldest in India and is mentioned in the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. The region however was inhabited since the 6th century BC and came under various historical and mythological dynasties of India. Owing to its ancient culture and tradition Mathura contains a plethora of tourist attractions , the best ones of those are as follows.

1. Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir

“ Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir ” is known to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity Lord Krishna who was the 8th incarnation of the deity Lord Vishnu. The God king was said to be born in a prison cell and the exact location of the prison cell is now occupied by a temple that is frequented by thousands of tourists each year. The best time to visit is during the festival of Janmashtami and Holi when the festivities are at their prime.

2. Jama Masjid

The Islamic mosque was built in 1662 AD by the governor of the Mughals, Abd-un-Nabi. Jama Masjid in Mathura is one of the major historical monuments in Uttar Pradesh. The mosque houses the tomb of the Mughal governor and is located close to the aforementioned Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir.

3. Dwarkadhish Temple

A fairly new temple in the ancient city of Mathura, the Dwarkadhish Temple was established around 150 years ago by a devotee of Lord Krishna. The temple is known for its amazing swing festival at the start of the monsoons in this region. The Lord Krishna depicted in the idol here is in his “King of Dwarka’ form and is depicted without the peacock feather and the flute.

4. Kusum Sarovar

Located near Radha Kunj, Kusum Sarovar is 450 feet long and 60 feet deep. The reservoir got its name from Krishna’s famous consorts Radha, who was said to meet Lord Krishna near the tank. The reservoir has a calm and serene environment and can be used by visitors for a swim. The major attraction here is the evening Aarti which is not to be missed and is commonly photographed by the shutterbugs.

5. Radha Kund

The town is considered to be a major pilgrim spot for the Vaishnavites in India and is known to be the place where Lord Krishna slew a Demon Bull. The pool of the Radha Kund is said to be formed by Lord Krishna who struck the earth and the water emerged at this spot. the pool is considered to be the most sacred and the various pilgrims frequent the place in thousands of numbers.  

6. Kans Qila

Also known as Kans Fort, the Kans Qila is named after Lord Krishna’s maternal uncle and was built by Raja Mansingh I of Jaipur. Raja Mansingh was one of the Navratnas of the Mughal emperor Akbar. The fort is built in a unique Hindu and Mughal styled architecture near the banks the the Yamuna River.

7. Mathura Museum

Formerly known as Curzon Museum of Archeology, the Mathura Museum was constructed in the year 1874. The museum due to its unique architecture and the important artifacts housed here has also appeared on postage stamps issued by the government of India. The museum houses various ancient archeological findings dating back to the Kushana and the Gupta Empire.

8. Govardhan Hill

Govardhan Hill is located near the Vrindavan and is one of the major pilgrim spots for the Vaishnavites. The hill is mentioned in the ancient texts of the Hindus and was once lifted by lord Krishna to defeat Indra the god of Rain and thunder in Hindu Mythology. The story related to the legend of this pilgrim spot is pretty interesting and will lead you to explore more about the Hindu myths and legends.  

The holy town of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh is also famous for its special sweet dish called the ‘ Peda ’ and the city has been mentioned several times in the religious texts as one of the revered pilgrim sites for the Hindus. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, Mathura

In the midst of the human-swarmed streets of Mathura, one of the most valued and beloved shrines, Janmabhoomi Temple resides. This shrine is known to be the holiest place in Mathura and it is an important pilgrimage for Hindus since it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Shri Krishna.

Before the temple was commissioned by the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, Raja Veer Singh Bundela (as per the locals), it used to be a stone-walled prison cell of Lord Krishna’s uncle, King Kans.

Besides that, one attraction not to be missed is located at the back of the main sanctum of the temple, a small room that represents a prison where Lord Krishna was born.

As you explore further inside the interiors of the holy structure you will also notice a marble statue of Lord Krishna. And the best time to visit is during the festive celebration of Janmashtami, the festivals of Chhappan Bhog and Holi are also celebrated in the temple premises.

Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura

The oldest and one of the famous temples in Mathura, Dwarkadhish is a holy structure that is dedicated to his holiness Dwarkadheesh (Lord Krishna). The temple is called so because Lord Krishna had moved to Dwarka to settle there until his last breath. In Mathura, however, Dwarkadhish Temple is located near Gatashrama and Vishram Ghat in the eastern part of the city and it houses the idol of Radha-Krishna in the main shrine.

Gita Mandir, Mathura

Out of the many Hindu temples in Mathura, Gita Mandir which is also known as Birla Mandir, is one of the must-visit temples, which is located a few kilometers away from the city center towards Vrindavan. What is so incredible about this shrine is perhaps that it has the carvings of Lord Krishna’s preaching to his disciple the Pandava Prince, Arjuna during the Kurukshetra War period.

As a matter of fact, right at the entrance of the temple, you can witness 18 chapters of Bhagavad Gita inscribed on the pillars. Built with red sandstone, Gita Mandir displays a blend of Hindu and western style of architecture, where the holy idols of Lord Krishna, Narayana, Rama, Goddess Lakshmi, and Sita are placed.

Inside the Gita Mandir, a large chariot of Sri Krishna is also painted along with several paintings of Hindu Gods and Goddess on the marbled walls.

Other popular festivals that are joyously celebrated here are Krishna Janmashtami and Chhappan Bhog. While exploring Kesava Deo Temple, about 250 metres away, you may also find another small shrine with a similar name, ‘it claims to have seen and felt Lord Krishna’s presence.’ At this temple, you can even see different images of Vasudeva, Devaki, and four-armed Krishna.

Chamunda Devi Temple, Mathura

Located right opposite of Maa Gayatri Tapobhumi, Chamunda Devi Temple in Mathura is one of the most important spiritual retreats to visit in India because it is believed that a hair strand of Maa Gayatri fell on this very spot. This event is also mentioned in the sacred text of Shrimad Bhagwat.

It is believed in Satyug Lord Krishna offered salvation to a python after which he went to seek blessings from Maa Chamunda here. The deity Maa Chamunda is also the clan Goddess of Nand Baba and it is said that after performing Mundan of Sri Krishna at Saraswati Kund, he also came to seek blessings of Maa Chamunda.

The temple is also believed to be a meditation centre for Sage Shandilya and that Sri Gorakhnath also attained knowledge here. During the festivity of Navratri, you can witness a large number of devotees visit this shrine.

In fact, on Sundays and on occasion of Akshay Navami and Devthan Ekadashi, the entire temple premises thronged by pilgrims. The major attraction of this place is that Chamunda Devi Temple does not have any idol inside.

Banke Bihari Mandir, Vrindavan

This is one of the famous Krishna temples in Vrindavan where Sri Krishna is known by the name of Banke Bihari because he is considered as a ‘Supreme Enjoyer.’ Banke means ‘Bent in three places,’ whereas Bihari means ‘Enjoyer’ as you can see in a statute where the idols’ hands are folded to hold a flute with a leg folded standing pose.

Banke Bihari Mandir is one of the seven temples of Thakur of Vrindavan, and it is located near Shri RadhaVallabh Temple. Amid the narrow lanes where the devotees rush to seek blessings into the godly kingdom, you can witness love and devotion for Sri Krishna. Here, the main entrance of the temple is adorned with a dark yellow-brown colour with intricate traditional design and perhaps it is the main attraction in Vrindavan. Inside, you can witness a jet-black statue of Lord Krishna known as Thakur Ji.

Shri Rangji Mandir, Vrindavan

The largest temple in Vrindavan, Shri Rangji Mandir has a Dravidian style of architecture built in the year 1851. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha who depicts Lord Vishnu and inside, you can see the holiness in his Sheshashayee Pose resting around the Sesha Naga.

Besides this, there are also other deities who you can worship are of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshman, and Goddess Sita along with Lord Narasimha, Lord Venugopala and Lord Ramanujacharya in this sacred shrine in Vrindavan. As you put your steps into the beautiful structure built by white marbles, you will across an archway along with winding peacock stairways on each side.

Massachusetts places historic limit on families seeking homeless shelter

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed a spending bill Tuesday that will enforce a time limit on stays in the state's emergency shelter system, reversing a 40-year-old "right to shelter" for families and pregnant women.

The l egis l ation — which includes $251 million for shelters starting this fiscal year — will enforce a nine-month limit on stays in the system starting in June, but it also allows for two 90-day extensions after that initial limit.

Healey said in a statement that the spending bill “dedicates resources to balance the budget and maintain critical services and programs.”

“It also implements a length of stay policy for Emergency Assistance shelter, which is a responsible step to address our capacity and fiscal constraints as Congress has continued to fail to act on immigration reform,” the statement continued. 

Healey added that her office will be “finalizing details” in the coming weeks to “ensure that families and providers are informed of the requirements and the services that we have available to help them secure work and stable housing.” 

The law also requires the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, which oversees the state's emergency shelter system, to establish a rehousing plan that includes case management for those leaving shelters. Families will be eligible to apply for extensions to their stays based upon things like whether they are pregnant or recently gave birth; their veterans status, employment status or participation in workforce training; their imminent placement in housing; or their need to avoid educational interruptions for children in public schools.

Extensions will also be considered for those diagnosed with disabilities or medical conditions, single parents caring for disabled children or other family members or single parents without adequate child care, and those at risk of harm from domestic violence.

Massachusetts was the only state to have a "right to shelter" law to provide housing for families and pregnant women indefinitely. But the system has faced historic challenges because of an increase in resident homeless families — who face one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the country — and an influx of migrant families who find themselves in need.

The shelter system has housed about 7,500 families since Healey cap ped th e number in October, saying in a statement that the system was becoming "unsustainable."

Healey referred to the remarkable change in the number of families who qualified for shelter in recent months. According to the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, the number of families in state shelters jumped from just under 4,000 in March 2023 to over 7,500 last month — with 700 more families on the shelter waitlist.

According to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, a little over half of the current 7,500 families in the state’s emergency shelter system recently came to the state as refugees or migrants.

State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, the Democratic chair of the Ways and Means committee, which was involved in negotiations with the Senate on the legislation, told NBC News before it passed that even with the law's potential enactment, Massachusetts would still have one of the most generous shelter systems.

“It’s still one of the most generous. It is probably the most generous program in the country, in terms of what it provides," Michlewitz said. While some major cities like Chicago and New York allow only short stays in their shelter systems, "we’re talking months here in Massachusetts,” he said.

Shelter directors have argued against the nine-month limit , pointing to data from the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities that the average length of stays for families in the system is nearly twice as long, at about 16 months.

The 150th Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday, May 4, at the famous Churchill Downs racecourse. The sesquicentennial celebration is shaping up to be a good one, with a loaded field of competitors backed by the always-high energy surrounding the Louisville race track. It should be a memorable race.

As post time approaches, it is important to take stock of the horses the audience will see on the racetrack and the odds each has to win. Part of what makes the Derby so popular is that there are very few regular competitors. The audience is annually introduced to a new grouping of horses and jockeys. There is comfort in the familiar, true, but there's always something special about the Derby and the horse that gets to capture lightning in the bottle yearly.

Here's what this year's crop looks like.

How Many Horses Race in the Kentucky Derby?

Each year, 20 horses are permitted to run in the Kentucky Derby. It was not always this way, however. The first Kentucky Derby, held 150 years ago, had 15 horses in the field and the number fluctuated from year to year until 1974. That year's Derby featured 23 horses, which prompted criticism from assembled media and the jockeys themselves. From 1974 on, the Derby was capped at 20 horses to ensure the field was competitive without putting too many bodies on the racetrack.

It's also part of what makes the Derby unique. Other major horse races, such as the Preakness and Belmot Stakes, have a maximum of 14 horses participating every year. When the question was raised a few years ago of why the Derby stuck with 20 instead of whittling down the field to match other events of its ilk, the length and popularity of the race was cited by Churchill Downs' senior director of communications, per the Courier-Journal .

In short, the Derby's 1 1/4-mile distance permits there to be more horses on the track, and as the capstone event of the year it can be afforded a larger field.

How Does a Horse Qualify For the Kentucky Derby?

To qualify for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, each horse in the field had to run in a series of designated races, titled The Road to the Kentucky Derby. These races, which number in the dozens, take place all over the world between each Derby. The top five horses in each race are awarded a certain number of points.

At the end of the racing season, the top 20 horses in terms of points totaled throughout the year are awarded a post at the Kentucky Derby.

That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will come to an end on April 30, 2024, and it will not be extended. This fall, we intend to change the number of hours students may work off campus per week to 24 hours.

Students who come to Canada must be here to study. As such, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary.

As we head into the summer session, students who have a scheduled academic break can continue working unlimited hours.

In developing this change, we looked at the needs of students, policies in other countries, as well as research that has shown that academic outcomes suffer the more a student works while studying. It also strikes the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes. More details will be shared in due course.

We also continue to develop the new Recognized Institutions Framework to reward post­secondary institutions that set high standards for selecting, supporting and retaining international students. We will continue to support and protect international students from financial vulnerability and keep protecting the integrity of the International Student Program.

Recent studies conducted in the US and Canada have shown that there is a considerable decline in academic performance for students working more than 28 hours per week, and that working more than 24 hours per week increases the chances that a student will drop out of their program.

Most countries that welcome international students set limits on the number of hours they may work while they study. Australia recently changed its policy to allow a student to work 48 hours every 2 weeks. In the US, students must meet additional criteria before being permitted to work off campus at all.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada raised the cost-of-living threshold that students must meet to be approved for a study permit so they are financially prepared for life in Canada and are not as dependent on working.

International students who begin a college program delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate. Those who already started this type of program prior to May 15, 2024, will still be able to access a post-graduation work permit, provided they meet all other criteria .

The new letter of acceptance (LOA) verification process has been a success. Since its launch on December 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024, IRCC has

•  received almost 162,000 LOAs for verification
• confirmed nearly 142,000 LOAs as valid directly with designated learning institutions (DLIs)
• identified almost 9,000 LOAs that didn’t match any LOA issued by a DLI or that the DLI had already cancelled before the foreign national applied for a study permit

2024 Kentucky Derby field: Post positions, jockeys, trainers for this year's race

The 2024 Kentucky Derby has arrived.

Post positions were drawn last weekend ahead of the 150th running  of the annual horse race, which is set to take place on Saturday at the legendary Churchill Downs in Louisville . The draw to determine the starting gate for each horse traditionally takes place Monday before the race, but the draw was held a full week ahead this year.

Post 5 and Post 10 have produced more winners since the Kentucky Derby began using a  starting gate  in 1940, according to the Louisville Courier Journal , part of the USA TODAY Network. But post position doesn't solely determine success – Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:01 with veteran jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado from Post 8, one of the least favorable positions.

The Kentucky Derby officially kicks off the first leg of the Triple Crown , followed by the  Preakness Stakes  on May 18 and  Belmont Stakes  in early June.
