The geography of the earth, if considered in generalized terms, is not that different. Almost every country in the world is surrounded by water, making life’s sustenance hugely dependent on the same. Over the passing of countless centuries, men have learnt to come up with architectural marvels constructed around – or in some cases even over water.

In this article we talk about some of the best floating restaurants around the world which provide a unique dining experience to its visitors.

Herein are mentioned 10 of the best constructional wonders with water as their foundation base are. Not only is their construction unique, but even their view from afar is equally singular.

1. Vancouver: Known as the ‘Plastic Dining Room’, the restaurant gets its name because of the main building material used.

Plastic – nearly 1,700 bottles – along with pine-wood has been used to build the restaurant which is afloat on water.

2.PS Tattershall Castle: PS Tattershall Caste is a former British World War ship.

The vessel was constructed in the year 1934 and after nearly four decades of active operational duty, it was respectfully discharged from its military obligation. Presently the ship is anchored in London’s Thames River and functions as a very famous eatery and taproom.

3. Petit Vardo:  A South-African drifting eatery marvel, the Petit Vardo is a flatboat-converted-restaurant in the River Vaal.

The restaurant’s highlight is during the evening hours when it is brightly lit and brilliant in its radiance.

4.  Rustar Dhow: In spite of being a desert at large, the middle-eastern countries are well-known across the world for their constructional flair.

Rustar Dhow located in the emirate of Dubai is a ship that traverses through the oceanic waters, offering scenic beauty along with excellent cuisine to patrons aboard the vessel.

5. Cat Ba Bay: There are locales which have one restaurant floating on water.

But the waters of the Cat Ba Bay in the South-Asian country of Vietnam are unique as they are full of boats which act as floating eateries. In pictures, these eateries look like tugs tugging house-boats along with them.

6. Sea Palace: Named ‘Sea Palace’, this restaurant is located in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam.

A Chinese restaurant, the Sea Palace is built in the traditional Chinese architecture and is regarded to be the first Chinese construction of its kind in the Netherlands.

7.  Kettuvallams: The backwaters of the state of Kerala in India are known across the world.

The Kettuvallams – house-boats in native Malayalam –are quintessential offerings of the Keralite culture, spanning throughout the backwaters.

8. Salt and Sill: Residential problems on land can force people to migrate to settle over water parts.

But the Salt and Sill eatery in Sweden could be the first eatery in the world to be established over water because of land shortage. The restaurant is a flatboat offering marine cuisine and delicacies unlike any other.

9. BBQ Donut: The BBQ Donut in Germany not only has a unique name – combining two favourite food varieties – but also has a singular location and mode of seating.

Patrons can enjoy their food sitting around a floating circular table surrounded by the scenic beauty of the water and the greenery beyond.

10. Jumbo Restaurant: Officially known as the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, this eatery is located in Hong Kong, China.

In the past nine years of its existence, the restaurant has been transformed from a mere eating house to a small and singular theme park. The eatery can be regarded as one of the most important high spots in the city of Hong Kong.

T wo years ago I sailed on my first cruise, Wonder of the Seas , and was somewhat stunned to have had one of the best travel experiences I'd ever had in my life. 

I had once wrongly assumed that cruising was a luxury strictly reserved for the senior generation and families with young children. As someone in my twenties without kids, what exactly was there for me to do? 

When an invitation to sail on Wonder's big sister, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , landed in my inbox at the start of this year, I've never been so quick to say "yes". 

Having now experienced the magic of Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships for a second time, let me unveil exactly why cruising should be on your travel bucket list, regardless of your age.

If a dose of grandeur is what you're after, you'd be hard pressed to find something more impressive than Icon of the Seas. 

The ship is a total spectacle from the moment you step on board and into Icon's Royal Promenade, where you're met by The Pearl - a staggering art installation that leads guests up an illuminated staircase and out onto a breathtaking sea view. At sunset, this spot becomes a candy-pink orb framing a backdrop of orange-hued skies, ticking all the boxes for an aesthetic Instagram snap. 

Each deck is separated into eight neighbourhoods; the Aqua Dome, Chill Island, Thrill Island, The Hideaway, Surfside, the Royal Promenade, Central Park, and the exclusive Suite Neighbourhood reserved strictly for suite guests.

With so many corners of the ship boasting wildly different vibes, from the buzzy Promenade to the luxe adults-only Hideaway and the oasis of calm in Central Park, the ship is a realm of infinite discovery. 

Considering Icon's capacity for 7,500 passengers I thought I would struggle to find peace on the ship, but there’s a palpable sense of calm about the space, with plenty of decks for families and adrenaline seekers to have fun while leaving chill holidaymakers undisturbed. 

Royal Caribbean's staff contribute massively to the sense of calm, aided by their approachable nature, openness to chat with each and every guest and unmatched efficiency. Fittingly, Royal Caribbean refer to their excellent service as 'the Royal way', and it's easy to see why experienced cruisers are always keen to return to Royal's Oasis Class ships.

No day is the same on board

Icon of the Seas was created with one goal in mind, to become the "world's best family vacation".

Royal Caribbean have seriously dialled up the thrills on Icon of the Seas, starting with the debut of Thrill Island, an adrenaline-amping six-slide waterpark located on Deck 16. Not only is the attraction the largest waterpark at sea, but it features some electrifying slides that could easily compete with some of the theme parks I've been to on land.

Despite picturing myself sticking to the adults-only areas, whizzing down the flumes and braving the epic pressure drop slide quickly became our favourite pre-lunch ritual on days at sea. Shortly after our daily dose of dopamine at the waterpark, we'd stroll over to Hideaway Bay for some much-needed chillout time. 

Floating in mid-air eight stories up, the Hideaway infinity pool at sea brought beach club vibes to the back of the ship in the form of an adults-only paradise. Sipping on a frozen pina colada while a DJ spun soulful tracks and the orange sun dunked into the sea was a next level of luxury I would have never expected from a 'family friendly' cruise.

Travel Tip:  On port days the ship is near empty, meaning you can enjoy attractions, pools, jaccuzzis and swim up bars and feel like you're the only one there. 

Icon has over 40 drinking and dining options

It's worth noting that Royal Caribbean ships are a total haven for culinary aficionados and cocktail enthusiasts. Each and every eatery offers a totally unique menu, with almost every cuisine imaginable on offer somewhere on the ship. 

There are over 40 different drinking and dining options available on board, spanning from a walk-up Champagne bar in Central Park to a post-swim hot dog stand in Surfside. 

While there are excellent options available in all of the ship's included restaurants, you'll need to book one of Icon's speciality dining options for anything particularly spectacular. 

A highlight of our trip was dining at Izumi, a Japanese restaurant serving up izakaya-style starters and fiery sushi bites. Considering you're cruising in the Caribbean, it would be criminal to miss the frozen Piña Coladas too.

The entertainment is unmatched

One thing I love about Royal Caribbean’s ships is how much performing arts has become the beating heart of the brand. Be it a jazz singer serenading your candlelit dinner, dancers taking over the Royal Promenade for a midnight flash mob, or a full Broadway-worthy production in the Royal Theatre, there is never a moment when the atmosphere on board isn’t electric. 

A curtain-raising production of The Wizard of Oz is currently dazzling audiences on Icon of the Seas, and Nick Weir's modernised adaptation would easily sell out audiences in London’s West End.

Aerials, acrobats and nail-biting 60ft dives into plunge pools left audiences in the Aqua Dome totally mesmerised - myself included. Floating restaurant named 'The Silver Whale' sinks while moored in city river

A floating restaurant has sunk after icy conditions caused it to become flooded in a city river.

The ship restaurant named The Silver Whale, in St Petersburg, Russia , was pictured sunken on its side in the Neva River yesterday (Monday, March 27).

The ship became flooded at around 7.30am due to icy conditions, according to Russian officials.

Temperatures in St Petersburg went as low as -1C yesterday as ice formed on the river.

The vessel, though unused at the time, is being investigated by the local transport office to see if health and safety regulations were being followed.

Initially, the ship was to be moved to the Moska River, but due to failing in agreements, the ship was moved to St Petersburg in 2018.

The restaurant never opened up and was finally put on the market in September 20022 for £372,000.

A Twitter user said: "In St Petersburg on the Neva, the floating restaurant 'Silver Whale' is sinking.

"Initially, owners wanted to install it on the Moscow River, but it didn’t work out, the owner moved it to St Petersburg and 'moored' it near the Babushkin Park But the institution never opened and it was put up for sale for 35million rubles."

Many users on Twitter came to comment on the sunken Silver Whale.

One commented: "I remember this thing, passed by. But it's probably for the best, he somehow looked ugly."

While another said: "Wow. All this time I was admiring it. Beautiful."

It is unclear whether the ship will continue to stay on the market.

The sunken whale-shaped ship comes after Putin insisted he is ready to destroy the West with nuclear weapons .

It was reported Russia had launched new hypersonic missile tests today (Tuesday, March 28) after insisting he will attack the West if attempts are made to defeat and dismember Russia .

The Russian dictator said he was looking to see the EU destroyed over fears of a missile strike against Russia.

It was Putin's top security aide, Nikolai Patrushev , 71, who reported his leader's thoughts in a rant to the Kremlin's newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Putin continues to wage war in Ukraine , which began on February, 20 last year.

Over 40,000 people have been reported to have died since the start of the war.
