Ken was known by many and well respected in the hobby. He will be missed. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In order to help keep interest in CBS Radio Mystery Theater alive, I've started to keep a list of links to other sites. If you would like to have your site listed, please feel free to contact me as shown above. As long as you are not attempting to profit from the shows, I'll be happy to add your site to the list.

Links to additional CBSRMT resource sites.

This website will be my CBS Radio Mystery Theater play area. For now, this index page will be a simple pointer to the other pages. Someday, when I get time, I'll do something nice here.

Everyone who collects CBS Radio Mystery Theater knows about the Payton-Grams book listing every episode with dates, numbers, production details and episode synopsis. However, this book has numerous serious mistakes and quite a few minor mistakes and typos. Here is my errata list for "The Book".

The CBS Radio Mystery Theater An Episode Guide and Handbook to Nine Years of Broadcasting, 1974-1982 - Errata List

In addition to all the audio recordings, I've come across a few other items that could be of interest to CBSRMT collectors. I make those items available here:

Other Items of Interest

I've started keeping a master inventory of all the CBSRMT broadcasts in my possession. For now, I'm using an Excel spreadsheet for the task. Here is the blank spreadsheet that I'm using. It includes the master list of broadcasts (originals and reruns) plus the original broadcast dates, rebroadcast dates and rebroadcast from dates. Much of this information came from The Book but I've corrected the entries from The Book according to my errata list above. This spreadsheet doesn't contain any inventory entries. It's just the basic skeleton with the basic broadcast info. This is the one folks. It's more correct than both Otter and The Book. This latest version has the 1399 numbering system added.

Ken's Master Inventory Spreadsheet (last updated April 4, 2021)

As I'm working on processing reels, I use a checklist to keep track of where I'm at. Here's that checklist in PDF format. I print this and fill it in by hand as I work. I plan to make it fully electronic eventually by making this a fillable form in Word then keeping the filled-in electronic form instead of all the pieces of paper in a 3-ring binder as I do now. This version is named for a particular project but it could easily have a place at the top to put the "Project Name:"

Otter Log (50,724 - August 17, 2007) (Note: I've stopped using Otter due to many mistakes by me and others. I now use The Book for verification and manually edit the filenames.)

In the fall of 2007 I compiled all the best versions of all the CBSRMT collections I had. I called this the "Best Available 2007" set and it was made available to the group as a distro. Everything I have here that was sorted and compiled to make this set is above this line. All new material that has come into being after the Best Avail set was distro'ed is below this line. This should make it easier to decide if you should take the time to download it or not.

NASA’s Perseverance rover has embarked on an ambitious road trip on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took this selfie, made up of 62 individual images, on July 23. A rock nicknamed “Cheyava Falls,” which has features that may bear on the question of whether the Red Planet was long ago home to microscopic life, is to the left of the rover near the center of the image.

A road trip has begun on Mars.

NASA’s Perseverance rover, which has been roaming the red planet since 2021, has embarked on a long trek to the top of the crater in which it landed, the space agency said Tuesday .

It marks a new chapter of the rover’s mission: It’s expected to spend the next few months making a steep ascent up to the western rim of Jezero Crater, a 28-mile-wide basin north of the Martian equator that scientists think was once home to a river delta.

The trip comes after 3½ years of exploration on the floor of Jezero Crater, where Perseverance found evidence of ancient flash floods and collected several rock samples that NASA intends to bring back to Earth on a future mission.

“Perseverance has completed four science campaigns, collected 22 rock cores, and traveled over 18 unpaved miles,” Art Thompson, the mission’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, said in a statement this month. “As we start the Crater Rim Campaign, our rover is in excellent condition, and the team is raring to see what’s on the roof of this place.”

Mastcam-Z mosaic made of 59 individual Mastcam-Z images showing the area Perseverance will climb in the coming weeks on its way to Dox Castle, the rover’s first stop on the crater rim.

Perseverance is likely to encounter some of the steepest and most challenging terrain it has experienced so far, according to NASA. The journey involves an elevation gain of around 1,000 feet and will most likely wrap up at the end of the year.

Throughout its travels, Perseverance will study Mars’ terrain, comparing rocks on the crater rim with those on its floor and in previously explored areas. The comparisons should give scientists a richer understanding of Mars’ landscape and its geological history.

Once the rover reaches the top, it is expected to focus on two regions: a spot nicknamed “Pico Turquino” and another dubbed “Witch Hazel Hill.”

Photos snapped from orbit suggest that Pico Turquino has some ancient fractures that may be remnants of hydrothermal systems from Mars’ distant past, according to NASA. Scientists are eager to investigate the possibility that heated water circulated beneath the Martian surface long ago; if that was the case, it could indicate that conditions were once ripe for microbial life to exist on the planet.

At Witch Hazel Hill, NASA scientists plan for Perseverance to investigate layers of bedrock that are likely to contain clues about the planet’s climate over billions of years.

Eleni Ravanis, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and one of the science leads of the Crater Rim Campaign, said the findings will help researchers understand more about Mars’ geological evolution.

“This is because we expect to investigate rocks from the most ancient crust of Mars,” Ravanis said in a statement . “These rocks formed from a wealth of different processes, and some represent potentially habitable ancient environments that have never been examined up close before.”

Perseverance launched on July 30, 2020, and landed on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021. The mission is the first step in what is known as the Mars Sample Return campaign, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency. The plan calls for subsequent missions to send another spacecraft to Mars to collect the samples Perseverance has gathered and bring them back to Earth.

Star Trek Officially Brands a Surprising Deep Space Nine Hero as a War Criminal

I’m glad voyager’s tom and b’elanna are no longer star trek's only successful romance, after 57 years, star trek settles the truth about trelane's godlike species.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #18!

The Maquis are a sore spot in the Star Trek universe, but now the Federation has admitted they were in the wrong. Introduced during Deep Space Nine’s second season, the Maquis menaced the Federation until they were wiped out. The legacy of the Maquis is a complicated one, and in Star Trek: Defiant #18, the Federation finally confesses they treated the Maquis unfairly.

The Maquis played huge roles across all three 24th century Star Trek shows. They were introduced in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine , and former Maquis were crucial to Voyager.

Star Trek: Defiant #18 is written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Angel Unzueta. Worf reflects on his current situation: trying to marshall a group of nomadic aliens against a Romulan invasion fleet. With him are Ro Laren and B’Elanna Torres, both former Maquis. As the three debate strategy, Worf says he will stay and fight , as it is what “Starfleet would do.”

Ro Laren reminds Worf of the Maquis, and he thoughtfully concedes the Federation should not have left the Maquis to their own devices.

The Maquis Role in the Star Trek Universe, Explained

The maquis had legitimate issues with the federation.

In the Star Trek universe, the Federation is depicted as the “good guys,” and almost always right–but the Maquis challenge this conception.

In the Star Trek universe, the Federation is depicted as the “good guys,” and almost always right–but the Maquis challenge this conception. The Maquis were Federation colonists whose territory was given to the Cardassians as part of a treaty. The Cardassians began immediately oppressing the colonists, leading to uprisings. The Maquis also felt betrayed by the Federation, who they perceived abandoned them, which in a sense they did. The Maquis carried out guerrilla warfare against both the Cardassians and the Federation. Unfortunately, there was never reconciliation, as Gul Dukat ordered the Maquis killed in the buildup to the Dominion War.

Difficult decisions were made during Star Trek's Dominion War, and one in particular is coming back to haunt a member of Deep Space Nine's crew.

The Maquis storyline was controversial among Star Trek fans, largely because it, for the first time, portrayed the Federation in a negative light . Star Trek: Deep Space Nine spent its seven seasons subverting franchise tropes, and the Federation’s moral high ground was one of them. The Maquis had a legitimate claim to their land, but it was taken from them without their input and handed over to one of the Federation’s worst enemies. When the Maquis dared to retaliate, they were met with opposition from not only the Cardassians, but the Federation as well.

Worf's Admission Goes A Long Way to Healing Old Wounds

The maquis' legacy will be a difficult one to unpack.

Worf’s confession about the relations between the Maquis and the Federation is a stunning admission. The Maquis story comes to a tragic end, and the survivors still harbor a mistrust of the Federation , Ro Laren among them. No amount of formal apologies from the Federation and Starfleet will ever make up for what happened, but Worf’s goes a long way to acknowledging a great wrong in the Star Trek universe. The Maquis are a dark spot in the history of the Federation, and one they hopefully have learned from.

James Darren, Actor, Singer and ‘Gidget’ Heartthrob, Dies at 88

His role as a surfer in that trendsetting hit movie led to success on television shows like “The Time Tunnel” and “T.J. Hooker,” and on the pop charts.

A publicity photo of James Darren, a casually dressed young man with a serious look on his face. He sits in a chair with its back facing the camera, his chin resting on his left hand and a cigarette in his right hand.

By Will Dudding

James Darren, an actor and singer whose starring role as a California surfer in the “Gidget” movies made him one of the most popular heartthrobs of the late 1950s and early ’60s, died on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 88.

His son Jim Moret said the cause of his death, in a hospital, was congestive heart failure.

Mr. Darren, a Philadelphia native who didn’t surf and wasn’t even a particularly strong swimmer, had been a contract player with Columbia Pictures when he was cast as an aspiring surf bum in “Gidget,” which also starred Sandra Dee in the title role and Cliff Robertson as the Big Kahuna, the leader of a surfing gang.

Released in 1959, the movie told the story of a high school girl who befriends that gang in Malibu and develops a crush on Mr. Darren’s character, Moondoggie. It was a hit, and it became one of the first signs of the surfing craze that would soon include the music of the Beach Boys and the “Beach Party” films.

Mr. Darren went on to play the character in two more “Gidget” films, “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” (with Deborah Walley in the title role) and “Gidget Goes to Rome” (with Cindy Carol); land a role in the acclaimed 1961 World War II drama “The Guns of Navarone”; carve out a long career in prime-time television, including a starring role on the 1966-67 time-travel series “The Time Tunnel”; and release a number of singles and albums, first as a purveyor of lightweight pop tunes and later as a lounge singer whose repertoire consisted mostly of standards.

Before he was cast as Moondoggie, a character with a prominent singing role, Mr. Darren had never sung professionally. At first the studio considered having him lip-sync to someone else’s voice.

“I told them I could do it,” Mr. Darren told The Los Angeles Times in 2004. “So we went into one of the sound stages and I sang ‘Gidget.’ They said, ‘He sings fine,’ then I did all the other songs.”

His recording of that song , the movie’s theme, reached No. 41 on the Billboard pop chart. As a result, he began to juggle a singing career with an acting career.

The two paths would intersect throughout his life. In 1965, he provided the voice of a surf-rock singer named Jimmy Darrock in an episode of the animation series “The Flintstones,” and in the late 1990s he played a holographic crooner on several episodes of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” That part inspired him to return to the recording studio for the first time in almost 30 years.

James William Ercolani was born in South Philadelphia on June 8, 1936, to William Ercolani, a tailor, and Virginia (Lipiano) Ercolani.

He knew he wanted to be in show business from a young age. His grandmother would encourage him to sing for neighbors in exchange for a dime. Later, she would give him a quarter. When he was 12, his father began taking him to nightclubs, where, he recalled, he “would get up and sing two songs.”

But what he really wanted to do was act. When he was a teenager, James auditioned to study with Stella Adler in New York. Once he was accepted, he took the train from Philadelphia twice a week.

His lucky break came during a visit to a photographer for a head shot. The secretary asked if he’d like to be in movies and arranged for him to meet with Joyce Selznick, the niece of the movie mogul David O. Selznick. At the time, she worked in merchandising at the Columbia subsidiary Screen Gems and would later become his manager.

When Ms. Selznick and Mr. Darren stepped into the same elevator before they met, he later recalled, Ms. Selznick kept staring at him. She later took him to meet Harry Romm, a producer and agent, and Harry Cohn, the president of Columbia pictures. She secured him a seven-year contract without a screen test or a reading.

“I was like a child in the womb,” Mr. Darren said in a 2011 interview . “I was so protected. I had no worries at all. All the decisions were made by Joyce or by the people at Columbia Pictures, and I know they would make the best decision for me.”

The early years went well. His first film, the low-budget “Rumble on the Docks” (1956), brought him hundreds of fan letters. His performance in “Gidget” boosted his profile and led to a supporting role in “The Guns of Navarone,” an epic war film starring Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn; it was a critical and commercial success.

But after “Gidget Goes to Rome” was released in 1963, it was evident that his twin careers had begun to plateau. The movie did not do well, and he never had a bigger hit than his early single “Goodbye Cruel World,” which hit No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1961.

Mr. Darren continued to get steady acting work for the rest of the decade, but mostly on television. His starring role on “The Time Tunnel” — he played Dr. Tony Newman, one of two government scientists lost in time, with each episode taking place in a different period and often during a pivotal historical moment — earned him a loyal cult following, although the series was short-lived.

In 1970, Mr. Darren met Buddy Hackett at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles, and the two went on to work together in a comedy-and-music act for 12 years. At Mr. Hackett’s suggestion, he moved on from teenage pop tunes and began focusing more on standards, turning himself into a crooner in the vein of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, whom he had long admired.

“Everything I know about live performance, I learned from Buddy Hackett,” Mr. Darren said in a 2016 radio interview. “He’d tell me, ‘You know what? You’re, like, a romantic image, so to speak. Sing romantic songs! What are you singing this junk for?’”

He remained active on television into the 1980s, as a guest star on shows like “Charlie’s Angels” and “The Love Boat” and as a regular from 1982 to 1986 on the police drama “T.J. Hooker,” which starred William Shatner. It was while on that show that he began a new career as a television director. Over the next decade, he directed episodes of several popular television series, including “Melrose Place” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

After working primarily as a director for 12 years, Mr. Darren was cast in a recurring role on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as the lounge singer Vic Fontaine. The character’s popularity encouraged him to release a new album based on the songs he sang on the series, and to resume touring. He released two albums of standards for the Concord Jazz label, “This One’s From the Heart” in 1999 and “Because of You” in 2001.

Mr. Darren married Gloria Terlitzky in 1955, and they divorced in 1958. Their son, Jim, is a broadcast journalist. In 1960, he married Evy Norlund , a former Miss Denmark.

In addition to his son Jim, he is survived by his wife; their sons, Christian and Anthony; a brother, John; and five grandchildren.

Bernard Mokam contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this obituary misstated the surname of Mr. Darren’s wife. She is Evy Norlund, not Nordlund.
