JAL A350-1000 Premium Economy: New York To Tokyo

I recently had the chance to make my first round-the-world trip, starting from the south of Argentina, going to Tokyo and back. As I was assembling the itinerary, I realized there was an opportunity to go via New York (JFK) and take Japan Airlines to Tokyo Haneda, operated by their new flagship, A350-1000. The flight runs daily, but some days are still operated by a 777, so even though the plan was exciting, there was still a chance that they changed the equipment last minute.

STARLUX A321neo Economy Class from Taipei to Tokyo (2024)

I had to make a last-minute flight booking on a recent trip between Taipei and Tokyo. There are many airlines on this route, with Japanese airlines like ANA and JAL and Taiwanese carriers like EVA Air, China Airlines, and STARLUX. Unfortunately, STARLUX tickets are usually much more expensive, but the prices were roughly the same on this occasion, so it was a perfect time to finally get to try STARLUX. The narrow-body A321neo was the cheapest option, but STARLUX actually operates all of their different aircraft types on this route, including the A350 and A330-300neo.

China Railways High Speed Train Business Class From Shanghai to Shenzhen

This review is a bit unusual as we usually review airlines. Still, we figured it would fit the blog since China Rail offers a Business Class product on their high-speed trains, intended to compete with domestic air travel.

Hello! I’m Shivya Nath. In 2011, at age 23, I quit my corporate job with a dream of travelling the globe. Two years later, I packed up my life into a backpack and decided to hit the road indefinitely. I travel slow, seek offbeat and local experiences, stay in a place for a few months or as long as it inspires me, and move on.

I’ve done a solo land journey from Thailand to India via Myanmar, and travelled overland from the Persian Gulf via Iran to Armenia. I’ve lived with a Mayan community in Guatemala, volunteered at a coral reef restoration project in Cuba, lived in a nunnery in Ladakh, and shed my fears and clothes at onsens across Japan. I hope to inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and experience the world – slowly, meaningfully and consciously!

I’m jessie, and i believe that life is a journey..

But our path isn’t always clear.

We’re influenced by so many outside voices — family, friends, the media, society — that we sometimes silence our own inner desires.

Booking that dream trip. Going on that yoga retreat. Starting a travel blog to become location independent. Setting off as a solo traveler for a summer abroad; these can all be put on the back burner, simmering slowly in our souls for another day.

The short version

Once upon a time there was a young woman who was told by society that in order to lead a fulfilling life she had to graduate college, get a 9-to-5 job and live a settled life with two weeks vacation per year (because obviously if you want anymore than that you’re just immature, selfish and lazy. Duh.)  

Despite resistance from loved ones, she decided to go the “immature” route, waving goodbye to her short stint in corporate America, and starting a business called Jessie on a Journey that allowed her to get paid to be creative, be her own boss and travel however much or little she pleased. She traded suits for suitcases, and her “office” is typically the nearest coffee shop or an airplane tray table. She lives happily ever after. The end.  

The Longer Version

Have you ever felt like the “right path” was the “wrong path” for you?

Yeah, I’ve been there.

Here’s the skinny: I was born and raised in New York — where I am also a certified sightseeing guide — and grew up traveling, mostly Caribbean cruises and North American road trips.

In 2010 I received my BA/MA in Communication & Rhetoric from the State University at Albany in New York, with the goal of getting into non-profit communications. By the time I graduated I had already had some inspiring travel experiences — studying in Australia, backpacking Europe solo, doing a homestay in Ghana, hiking my way through China and teaching English in Thailand.

You probably saw this coming, but I soon realized I wouldn’t be able to give up the complete freedom to travel. My travel experiences were what made me feel like I was truly living.

When I finally got a “real job” they wouldn’t let me have any time off for travel until I had been there for six months. And even when I got the time off, it was only two weeks for the whole year.   I loved slow travel and really spending time in a place to get to know it, and knew in my heart the job situation was not going to work. I couldn’t stop thinking about how alive travel made me feel and how stagnant I felt working in an office. I was on someone else’s schedule following someone else’s rules; I wanted to live my best life and do things my way.

When I quit, my friends and family of course did not approve, but travel was something I felt really strongly about. I decided I didn’t care what they thought. If they loved me they would accept my choice.  

I didn’t want to be one of those people that did the same thing everyday and lived a similar life to everyone else. I wanted to live my life.

So I started waitressing full-time until I could come up with a plan, which allowed me to work overtime while I was home to pay off loans and bills, but also request off freely when the travel bug would hit.

Then one day I stumbled upon a travel writing class (funny enough, I teach a few myself now ) and signed up. I loved writing and loved travel. Meeting the other students and alumni and reading blogs, I realized it was possible — as in real-life-this-isn’t-made-up — to combine my passions and make a living doing what I loved.  

Today I split my time at home in NYC and on the road. And even though I travel somewhere almost every month — mainly on my own — I still have a bucket list and things that make me nervous. But once you take one step in the direction of your dreams you’ll be able to take another.

Life is an adventure. I want to experience it to the fullest.   And I want you to, too!

I see too many of my friends and family working jobs they’re unhappy in and living their lives in a way that doesn’t completely fulfill them. Even if you’re not in a position to take travel to the full-time level, it is still possible to enrich your life by exploring the world.

The blogger behind A Dangerous Business is Amanda, who decided in high school that she wanted to travel. An avid Lord of the Rings fan, she was determined to visit New Zealand and spent two weeks there in 2005. She has since been to over 50 countries on six continents.

With the hopes of traveling more, Amanda started A Dangerous Business in 2010, but isn't a full-time traveler. She enjoys the comforts of home — and her beloved cat — far too much. The Blonde Abroad is a multi-level business that allows Kiersten to earn an income through various streams of revenue. Kate McCulley travels the world for a living and documents her adventures on her blog, Adventurous Kate . Adventurous Kate started on that trip to southeast Asia, when Kate began building up her freelance work portfolio while developing her blog. In 2016, she moved to New York City, revamped her blog and downsized her travel, so she's only away from home about 25 percent of the time.

The travel blog Sending Postcards is a labor of love between a married couple. While they don't disclose their names, they do share their story. After their wedding, the duo left Canada to travel the world together. The blog was essentially a way to document their extended honeymoon.

The two spent a year traveling around Africa, Europe and the U.S., living in Montreal for a few years before settling in San Francisco, which they currently call home. As they travel to various destinations, many right in and around California, they share their adventures on Sending Postcards.

Hippie in Heels

Rachel Jones grew up in a small town in Ohio, where she lived with her brother and parents. When she got to college, she spent two summers backpacking in Europe and a month in Uganda. She went on to graduate with honors as a nurse. After 11 months as a cardiac care nurse in Charlotte, N.C., Rachel realized that a life in the "real world" wasn't for her. And so, she decided to retire from nursing and follow her heart.

She chose Goa, India, where she could ride a camel and climb a mountain, as her next home. It's where she's spent the last five years and where she currently documents her life on her travel blog, Hippie in Heels . She basically lives out of a backpack and survives on street food. While she's barely getting by financially, the trade off is worth it because she's been to 30 countries and counting. And she met the love of her life in India.

In 2008, the day after his 24th birthday, Ryan headed to Dublin, Ireland for his first solo backpacking trip through Europe. The three-month experience was life changing, and in 2010, Ryan quit his job. He then set off on a trip around the world that was supposed to last six months to a year. His passion for the sun, the sea and adventure wouldn't let him stop there, and he's been on the road for seven years.

Now he's a digital influencer and travel blogger who has spent the last three years in Playa del Carmen, sometimes visiting Greece during the hot summer months. His blog, Pause the Moment , features travel guides and resources for destinations all across the world. In 2017, he started running small group tours to Egypt, which he plans to continue in October 2018.

I’m not going to delve too deeply into this technical feat. What I’m going to focus on, however, is the brilliant team behind The Adventurists. 

The site is founded by “Chief Idiot” — Tom Morgan. Apparently, most of the crazy ideas featured on the blog were his. 

Every page on the site reflects Morgan and his team’s wackiness and passion for great adventures. They do, host, and document daring outdoor activities on air, land, and sea — plus, a whole lot of charity.

Their audience can also participate in these activities, which can be held in various parts of the globe. The “Monkey Run,” for example, is an event where participants race through dirt trails on tiny bikes.

The bottom line is, it’s hard to come up with unique ideas that set you apart in the blogging landscape. The Adventurists, on the other hand, managed to do so multiple times.

43. The Everywhereist

Before anything else, yes — that’s Rand Fishkin in the photo above. 

And yes, the next travel blogger on this list is Rand’s longtime sweetheart and wife. 

Geraldine DeRuiter was a former copywriter and went with Rand in his travels, which are often business-related. She then turned to the habit of documenting their travel experiences, which she described as “love letters” to her husband. 

Today, Geraldine works full-time on  The Everywhereist   — named by Time magazine as one of the best blogs in 2011. 

The Everywhereist contains posts about food and Geraldine’s travel experiences along with a comprehensive Philadelphia travel guide. The guide contains information on where to go, eat, shop, and stay.

Don’t be fooled by the name —  Amateur Traveler   is by no means run by an amateur.

Chris Christensen is a skilled photographer, travel writer, and podcast host. The site also utilizes a long list of monetization strategies that I believe every blogger should learn. 

True, he wasn’t the most experienced traveler when he started the blog. Before he created Amateur Traveler, he was a full-time EVP of engineering and operations for a company based in Silicon Valley. 

In his defense, he grew up in a family that traveled a lot to national parks in a trailer. He also learned a lot of foreign languages, which he believes is a window into understanding and embracing different cultures.

One of the questions people often ask us is, "How much is a point or mile worth?"

The true answer varies from point to point and person to person. It also depends on your travel goals and how much you maximize a particular loyalty currency. Still, some rewards credit cards are worth more than others, and our goal is to give you a sense of how they stack up.

Historically, TPG has valued points and miles based on a combination of factors: the price at which we would purchase the miles, award costs in the program (factoring in availability and fees) and our expertise in the inner workings of the programs. However, we now use extensive data for the top six U.S. airline loyalty programs to better estimate the value you should aim to get from your rewards.
