Being a once in a lifetime travel destination, one has high expectations for the tour. I am really happy to say the tour exceeded my expectations. Pick up from Cairo Airport went smoothly. The person collecting me got in contact the day before and kept in touch all the way to the actual pick up. The pre-tour hotel was great. Our first guide in Cairo, Abdou was fantastic. He has a background in archaeology and was able to share all his knowledge about Egyptian history. He also provided an excellent commentary about the important artifacts in the Egyptian Museum. The next day our flight from Cairo to Luxor was delayed around 4 hours. Learnt that the airline, Air Cairo was not the most punctual airline. The tour company advised that they were going to stop using Air Cairo and indeed we had a smooth flight back to Cairo on Air Egypt. After arriving in Luxor, we boarded the MS Princess Sarah for a 5 night cruise. The ship was 5* and the food/service were great. However, our 2nd guide for Luxor was disappointing. He only provided a brief explanation at each site and sent us off for "free time" photos. Upon providing this feedback to the tour operator, they immediately organised a replacement guide for the rest of the tour. The replacement guide, Nesrin was excellent. She was able to provide a detailed explanation and walked with us at each historical site and available to answer all questions. For our flight back we had a guide to accompany us through Awsan Airport. He even organised for us to bypass the long check in lane so that we could have a quick check in. Overall, I was really impressed with the tour operator. They listened to and were proactive in fixing our issues. They even refunded part of our tour fee due to our issue with the Luxor tour guide and organised a surprise upgrade for our final night hotel stay in Cairo. I high recommend this tour due to its comprehensive coverage of all the important sites and tour company who really cared about the quality of their product.

For a holiday on the Red Sea, for example, the ideal period is from the end of February to the end of October, although it is preferable to avoid the strong heat of July and August.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in cultural trips and are planning to go to Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel. It will be better to opt for the winter period so as to make less effort during excursions to the various tourist sites.

In general, however, August is best avoided across the country when temperatures reach annual highs. It is very advisable to travel to Egypt in Easter and Christmas and New Year 2021.

What to buy in Egypt? You can travel safely to Egypt, but be careful not to be fooled by buying gadgets actually made in China. We recommend that you prefer local crafts: mother-of-pearl, ceramic, and alabaster objects (always check with the merchants that they are local products).

Try to buy some Egyptian cotton (among the best in the world). Take advantage of your trip to Egypt to buy spices, perfumed oils, essences, and soap (olive oil is particularly good). You can also buy henna.

Egypt Tour Selection Trips

• Remember to show respect for the local culture by covering shoulders and knees (a scarf can be very handy to cover up for mosques or temple visits)
• Learn how to read numbers in Arabic to avoid being taken advantage of. As a tourist, you will most likely be quoted a heavily marked up price, so knowing what the actual written price is can help.
• Tap water is not safe to drink - for this reason, salads are often best avoided in restaurants too.
• Going on a guided tour often helps reduce any risk of getting sick from different food, but it is still wise to avoid street food.
• Train trips from Cairo to the south are long and seats can be uncomfortable, so if your trip includes an overnight train, check if your tour company buys sleeper beds or seats if this is important to you.
• Bus travel within Egypt covers a lot of ground, but stops are infrequent. So take advantage of the pit stops!
• Swimming in the Nile is not advisable.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

As of September 2021 - a  Level 3 Travel Advisory  has been in place by the US State Department. This advises "increased caution" when traveling to Egypt, as a result of certain terrorist activities and threats, and military activity on the border. 

But what does this mean? It is advised that when you are visiting Egypt to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. It also means that the specified areas, e.g. the Sinai Peninsula and the borders, should be avoided. However, the Egyptian government emphasizes that all areas with a high concentration of tourism are heavily guarded to ensure your safety.

Yes, you can travel to Egypt , but there are certain precautions that you should take to keep yourself safe. The first is to know your country’s embassy location and number in case of an emergency which can be accessed through your country’s government website. You should also remain within the areas that are deemed safe.

Most government websites also provide a link to a site where you can input your information so you get messages from your embassy about safety conditions in the area. For visitors from the US, you can enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). Also, it is advised to remain away from any political protests or crowds.

What should women wear in Egypt?

Another common question that many people often ask before traveling to Egypt is, generally, what to wear? 

A general rule of thumb for women should be to  dress conservatively . This means covering as much skin as you can -- your shoulders and legs, especially. When surrounded by other tourists, you will likely be able to wear whatever you want, but it is traveling in between these locations, or at night, that you may run into problems. Certain mosques will also require you to cover your arms and hair. 

Here is a list of items every woman should pack when visiting Egypt (or any other conservative Muslim country):

• Lightweight scarf : this scarf will be your best friend. You can wrap it over your head and shoulders when you need to enter a mosque without having to drag around an entirely new outfit. 
• Sunglasses: Making eye contact in Egypt is considered to be flirting, so these will help you avoid the gaze of any men who might call out to you. These will also be useful in general as Egypt is a sunny place! 
• Maxi skirt:  Maxi skirts made of lightweight, loosely-fitting material are a great way to avoid getting too hot.
• Tunic shirt:  Wearing a cotton or linen tunic-style shirt is a great way to beat the heat  and make sure you're covering up. This style of shirt will not only be long enough to cover your hips if you are wearing skinny jeans, but they usually have high necklines and longer sleeves.

Day 1 - Arrive and Overnight in Giza

Today you arrive in Cairo International Airport and meet with the tour coordinator and driver. They will help you navigate your way through the airport and escort you to your hotel. Once at the hotel, the tour coordinator will provide details regarding Day 2 Excursions. You will spend the night in the hotel and awake for a day full of adventure.

Day 2 - The Great Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, and Serapeum.

After eating breakfast at your hotel, you will be met by the Egyptologist who will provide your full day of touring. The adventure begins west of the Nile River in a town called Giza. It is here you will witness Egypt’s most visited attractions—the Pyramids at Giza and the Great Sphinx. Built for three kings of the Fourth Dynasty, the pyramids were designed to be the tombs of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. In addition to the three main pyramids, you will see the queens’ pyramids and the Great Sphinx.

The next stop for today will be the ancient city of Saqqara, an amazing display of how tomb and pyramid-building progressed. Saqqara is a necropolis containing burials from different dynasties. It includes both royal and nonroyal tombs, mastabas, and cemeteries. We continue to the Serapeum of Saqqara where we will enter a series of tunnels to see the sarcophagi of the Apis bulls, sacred to the god Ptah.

The driver will return to your hotel, and you will be at leisure for the evening. Overnight in the hotel at Giza.

Day 3 - Flight to Aswan, Philae Temple, High Dam and Felucca Ride

Be ready for an early flight this morning as we head to Aswan to visit Philae Temple and the High Dam. In the 1960s the Egyptian government began construction on Aswan High Dam. Its purpose was to prevent the annual flooding of the Nile River and to bring electricity to all people of Egypt. The trouble with the High Dam was it would permanently flood many of the antiquities. As a result, massive projects were begun to help preserve these sites such as Abu Simbel . Along with our visit to the High Dam, we will also travel to the Philae temple, one dedicated to Isis, the wife of Osiris and mother to Horus. It, too, was moved from its original location to one that was free from flooding. To get to the Philae temple you will take a water taxi. Once all your tours have been completed for the day, you will board a felucca for a relaxing boat ride through Aswan. You will have the opportunity to not only enjoy the scenery but also to catch a glimpse of the Nubian village. We will then board the Nile cruise your home for 3 nights.

Day 4 - Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples

Welcome to the Temple of Kom Ombo, an unusual double temple built for the falcon god Horus and the crocodile god Sobek. Kom Ombo also contains an engraving which is thought to depict the first use of medical and surgical instruments. Once we complete our tour of this fascinating place, we return to the cruise and sail north to the Edfu temple. Located on the Nile River between Aswan and Luxor, the Edfu temple, also known as the Temple of Horus, is the tallest and best-preserved temple in Egypt. This temple was designed to honor the divine birth of Horus and the pharaoh. We will take some time to explore this temple before we return to our cruise ship and set sail to Luxor. 

Day 5 - Luxor and Karnak Temples.

We arrive at the beautiful town of Luxor, the site of the famous Thebes and the World’s Largest Outdoor Museum. Whereas Egypt holds thirty percent of the world’s antiquities, Luxor holds seventy percent of Egypt’s antiquities. The importance of this city in Egypt’s history is unparalleled. Upon arrival to Luxor we will begin our day of touring in the East Bank where we will find the Karnak and Luxor temples. The Karnak temple, also known as the Temple of Amun-Ra, honored not only Amun-Ra but Osiris, Montu, Isis, Ptah, and other Ancient Egyptian Gods. The area of Karnak Temple is around 200 acres, so it is immense. As we leave Karnak, we will begin our trip to the Luxor temple. At one time there were sphinxes that lined a path from Karnak to Luxor, but it is not fully excavated. You will, however see a portion of the sphinx as it leads to the Luxor temple. Luxor temple is one of the most intact temples, so you will see many interesting statues, hieroglyphs, and rooms. We will then return to the cruise for the evening at Leisure.

Day 6 - Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon and flight back to Cairo

This morning we say good bye to all the wonderful people we met on the cruise, but we could not leave Luxor before we visit the west bank of the Nile. We will take the time to visit several sites. One of the sites we will visit is the Valley of the Kings. After pyramid building began to wane, the kings still needed a final resting place to preserve themselves and store all their treasures. Housing nearly all the tombs for the kings of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties, the Valley of the Kings was designed to help hide the burial places of the kings to prevent looting. One of the most famous tombs here is the tomb of Tutankhamen. We will have the opportunity to explore some of the tombs. Next, we move to the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut . Hatshepsut was the wife to Thutmose II but became pharaoh after he died. This mortuary temple was modeled after Mentuhotep’s but at a much larger scale. We will explore this beautiful temple which is set into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari. Our last site to visit will be the Colossi of Memnon where you will see two (nearly 60 feet tall) seated statues of Amenhotep III. These statues were once the entrance to Amenhotep’s mortuary temple. As our day concludes, we will head to Luxor Airport for our flight back to Cairo. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 7 - Coptic Cairo and The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

Today we visit Coptic Cairo where we will have the opportunity to see many Coptic churches and influences for Egypt. In addition we will have the opportunity to visit the Ben Ezra synagogue, which is believed to be the site where baby Moses was drawn out of the water.

Our next visit will be the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization( NMEC ). This new museum opened its doors to visitors on Apr 4, 2021.

Dedicated to the ancient Egyptian civilization, the NMEC is the first museum in the Arab world to provide a general overview of all historical periods encompassing Egypt.  Its main focus is to provide insight into the interactions of the Egyptian people with their native land throughout history. It provides a center full of cultural, educational, recreational, and research opportunities for international visitors and scholars.  And most importantly, the NMEC is the home to twenty-two remarkably preserved ancient pharaohs and queens. 

Day 8 - Egyptian Museum, Citadel of Saladin, Khan El Khalili, and Moez Street

Today is our full day of Cairo sightseeing. One of our first stops will be the Egyptian Museum. This museum houses over 120,000 artifacts from Egyptian history. Some of their most famous include the entire collection of Tutankhamen. Your guide will introduce some of the many important pieces as well as allow you some time to wander through the museum to peruse the collections.

Once we finish with the museum, we will head to Abu Tarek for lunch. Abu Tarek is a multi-story restaurant that serves wonderful Koshary, the beloved Egyptian dish. It is a special treat.

You might have noticed a wall in parts of Cairo. This wall served to protect ancient Cairo and another city called Ayyubid from the Crusaders. Sala-Al-Din (Saladin) was the leader of the Ayyubid, and he decided to fortify both his city and ancient Cairo with this wall. It proved to be quite formidable as the Citadel of Saladin was nearly impenetrable. Today, as we learn about the history of the Citadel, we also venture inside the walls to the highest point, the Mohamed Ali Mosque. This ancient mosque is quite beautiful and will provide greater insight into Egypt’s main religion, Islam.

Next up is the Khan El Khalili Bazaar. It is a wonderful depiction of an ancient outdoor shopping center. You will have the opportunity to wander the narrow alleyways and see many items unique to the Egyptian markets. As you continue to wander, you will have the opportunity to traverse Cairo’s oldest street—El-Moez Street. This pedestrian only street, just beyond Khan El Khalili, is an open-air museum and runs over half a mile. Moez Street is less touristy and provides those who travel it a unique look at Islamic architecture.

The driver will return to your hotel, any you will be at leisure for the evening. Overnight in the hotel at Cairo.

**Ladies please consider bringing a scarf with you on our tour today. It will be needed to enter the Mohamed Ali Mosque. Also, conservative dress is required while inside the mosque.

Day 9 - Farewell

Today will be the final day of our tour of the amazing Egypt, and we will take you back to Cairo International Airport to catch your flight. Thank you for spending the time with us.

Call us biased, but we think one of the best parts of traveling is making new memories with people who are just as hungry for adventure as you are. That's the beauty of a small group tour. There'll be plenty of time to do your own thing if you want to, but you'll always have someone to snap a photo of you with the Pyramids, grab a coffee with, or chat with on an overnight sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan.

A local leader

Egypt's history is  that  rich, it can be hard to know where to start. With a local leader by your side, you'll have an on-tour history expert ready to answer your burning questions and help you uncover the mysteries of the Pyramids, Sphinx, and the Valley of the Kings. They'll also introduce you to locals, show you hidden spots that you won't find on Google, and give you top-notch recommendations for your free time.

Egypt is generally a safe place to travel to, as long as you keep your wits about you and adhere to the status quo. Crime rates are low, but be aware of scam artists and pickpockets which can be common in busy souqs and tourist hotspots. Your local leader knows the areas and tourist traps to avoid, will get you from A to B smoothly, and will let you know the do's and don'ts when it comes to local customs.

Logistics and convenience

Anxious about local bus rides or sleeper trains? Not sure about how to go about organizing a felucca cruise (traditional Egyptian sailing boat)? No worries. When you travel with us, we'll take care of all the planning and logistics so you don't have to (there's enough admin to do in everyday life, right?). All you need to do is rock up –   with your camera and a sense of adventure!

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip in egypt.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries, some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances, it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that, there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling in Egypt?

You sure do. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability, and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport, and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are. 

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewelry, wedding rings, and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress as the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email, and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost-effective. 

Fare's fair

Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of traveling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a  day tour  to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life. 

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Why An Organized Tour Is The Best Way To Experience Egypt Solo

T he temples. The tombs. The pyramids. Egypt has long held a special place in my imagination for its extraordinary millennia-old antiquities. From its golden treasures and dazzling jewelry to its eye-popping architecture and intriguing burial chambers, Egypt’s rich cultural heritage celebrates one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

But when it came time to finally plan a visit, I faced several challenges — even as an experienced traveler (I’ve visited 110 countries). First was the prospect of arranging an extremely complicated trip that included visiting multiple sites scattered around the country, requiring flights, ferries, road vehicles, and cruise ships to access. Second, I was concerned about the cultural barriers and safety of traveling alone as a Western woman in a fairly conservative Muslim country.

The solution? Signing up with an experienced tour company, such as 76-year-old Trafalgar Tours . So I chose their 9-day “ Best of Egypt ” itinerary that included an iconic Nile River cruise. (This was a complimentary individual media tour.) From the lush river valleys to the vast desert landscapes, the voyage included all the archaeological greatest hits: Giza, Sakkara, Memphis, Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, and the magical Abu Simbel — two rock-hewn temples miraculously moved to higher ground to escape Nile flooding.

These are just some of the reasons why an organized tour is necessary for exploring Egypt on your own.

1. Trip Planning Made Easy

Planning a trip that encompassed Egypt’s antiquities — from the Pyramids of Giza in the north to Abu Simbel 700 miles away to the south — as well as Cairo’s cultural highlights was daunting. So I was happy to let the experts at Trafalgar arrange all transportation, accommodations, most meals, guides, entrance tickets, and other logistics. That allowed me to focus single-mindedly on enjoying the destination itself.

“I wouldn’t know where to start, being unfamiliar with the culture and not knowing who to trust,” said Rosalind Monaghan, a tour member from Albuquerque, at the prospect of designing her own trip.

Pro Tip: Choose a tour company that aligns with your travel style based on level of activity.

2. Safety And Security

With the Department of State warning U.S. citizens to “reconsider travel to Egypt due to terrorism,” traveling in our group of 31 offered the comfort of safety in numbers. Plus, whenever we were transported by coach in Cairo, the local government reassuringly provided security police to ride along. I never felt unsafe.

“Safety was a big issue for us,” said another tour member, Imelda Velayo from Orlando. “It was so comforting in a foreign country to know that the tour company was there for us.”

Pro Tip: Check the State Department travel advisory before planning a trip.

3. Cultural Enrichment 

A knowledgeable local guide can bring a destination to life. We were fortunate that our tour leader, Hatem Abdel Aziz, was a trained Egyptologist and university lecturer — and it showed. Not only did he excel in his knowledge of Egypt’s glorious past, but he also shared revealing insights into Egyptian culture not typically found in a guidebook. His infectious passion enhanced our appreciation of this proud 5,000-year-old empire that achieved such remarkable engineering feats without the use of modern tools or technology.

We learned about fascinating tidbits of the ancient world: how the pyramids were built (with mud-brick spiral ramps to drag up the 2.5-ton limestone blocks) and by whom (skilled laborers and not slaves, as commonly thought); that tombs are always on the west side of the Nile (where the Sun sets) while temples are on the east; that temples were built from the bottom up and decorated from the top down; that no royal palaces remain because they were all made of impermanent adobe; and that hippos were considered evil and therefore exterminated from the Nile.

At each temple and tomb, Hatem explained the elaborate Egyptian cosmology, royal lineages, and mysterious hieroglyphs. He illuminated the exquisite wall paintings and carvings, pointing out startling scenes: men force-feeding geese for foie gras and a hippo biting a crocodile’s head at the Saqqara necropolis ; surgical scalpels and forceps at Kom Ombo Temple ; Christian figures on Luxor Temple , the remains of a one-time Christian church; a three-headed snake (the only one in Egypt) in Ramses IX’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings; and a grinning dwarf-deity playing a harp at Philae Temple .

We also learned about current customs: how Muslims bury their dead (no cremation, embalming, or coffins allowed), why Muslim women cover their hair (to conceal their beauty), why sexes are separated in mosques (to avoid distractions), the main occasions for gifting gold (weddings, births, and Mother’s Day), and the five pillars of Islam (confession, almsgiving, fasting, praying five times daily, and visiting Mecca).

“There’s a difference between just being a tour guide and loving your country,” observed Jeanne Hempen, a retiree from Honolulu. “Hatem really wants us to know the history.”

Pro Tip: Be sure to have U.S. dollars (used throughout the country) or local currency in small bills to tip your tour director and bus drivers. They’re also handy for bargaining with souvenir vendors at many historic sites.

4. Special Experiences

A tour often includes exclusive experiences that are hard to replicate on your own. Trafalgar, for example, features its signature “Be My Guest“ event on every tour, where locals welcome you into their homes to learn about their culture. In the Valley of the Kings, we visited the humble home of village bread bakers who served us mint tea and “sun bread” (so-called because it rises in the Sun) made from local wheat and baked in their earthen oven. Twice a week, each neighboring household bakes its own version with a remarkably distinct flavor from all the others. Wealth here is measured in land and being self-sufficient, the family told us.

At a papyrus shop, we watched the fascinating process of turning papyrus reeds (whose cross-sections reveal a pyramidal shape) into paper — an invention that predated Chinese paper by about 3,000 years. At an alabaster workshop in Aswan, we observed the initial carving of a pot. And at a Cairo perfumery, we sniffed intoxicating scents during an entertaining presentation accompanied by Turkish coffee and lemon mint tea. 

Pro Tip: You can buy papyrus paintings (some even personalized), alabaster pots, or perfumes at these stops. Happily, there’s no hard sell.

5. Language Barrier 

Although I speak a few European languages, Arabic is definitely not in my repertoire. Having the bilingual tour staff smooth the way was invaluable, despite the availability of translation apps. “I couldn’t have managed the language as a solo traveler,” agreed Amanda Chiavetta from Honolulu.

Pro Tip: Learning a few essential words in Egyptian Arabic, such as min fadlak (“please”) and shoukran (“thank you”), goes a long way.

6. Like-Minded Guests 

A group tour offers a valuable bonus to a single traveler: ready-made companions with whom to share the experience. They tend to have similar interests and a love of travel, which facilitates socializing and sometimes even lasting friendships. Plus, they help you avoid the dreaded dinner alone — the bane of solo travelers, especially women.

“You can enjoy the company and meet people with different points of view,” said solo traveler Rosalind Monaghan.

Indeed, I’ll never forget overhearing what the retired Canadian judge in our group said while gazing at the Great Pyramid of Giza: “This is where you bring people who have no hope.”

That sentiment, so moving and profound, could easily have applied to my entire tour.
