Review: Viking Venus

Reviewed by Megan Spurrell

What is the line? Viking Cruises

Name of ship? Venus

Passenger occupancy? 930

Itinerary? Malta & Adriatic Jewels, Valletta to Valletta

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Viking is for travelers who see themselves as students of the world—think expertly curated libraries in public spaces and cabins; lectures led by professors from top universities; and fellow passengers who aren’t shy to engage in thought-provoking conversation over dinner.

Tell us about the ship in general.

Venus was christened in May 2021, and one of the first Viking ships to return to the seas after a 14-month pandemic pause. For that reason, the 930-passenger ship has behind-the-scenes upgrades, like a lab for onboard COVID-19 testing (testing is not currently required, but was done daily onboard when the ship first launched—a first-in-class effort for pandemic sailings). For the large part, though, it is identical to its sister ships: the Star, Sea, Sky, Orion, and Jupiter. It features the same blond wood and Scandi design elements as all Viking ships, and the layout is intended to feel familiar to anyone who has stepped foot on a Viking ocean ship. The restaurants are in the same places, the Aquavit Terrace still has the best sailaway view… For a Viking loyalist, boarding the Venus means coming home. First-timers will clock a few standout features, like the fact that there are no interior rooms (meaning every category of cabin comes with an ocean view).

Who is onboard?

Looking around a Viking ship, you’ll typically find travelers in their 50’s and up—a mix of empty nesters, groups of couples traveling together, retirees, and a handful of multigenerational families with adult children (it is an adults-only line, after all). Because all of Viking’s ships are English-speaking, it’s a hearty mix of Americans and British travelers, with a sprinkling of those from Canada, Australia, or Scandinavia. Most are avid Viking fans who know the brand well—and are eager to swap stories about ships or itineraries they’ve tried (the quintessentially Viking ‘Homelands’ routes are a feather in the cap for most). As a solo traveler in my 30’s, I stuck out enough that several people came up and asked if I worked for the brand.

Describe the cabins.

I stayed in a Deluxe Veranda Stateroom, which is basically a standard stateroom with added access (the physical space is the same 270 square feet). That upgrade translates into priority bookings at the spa, in specialty restaurants (for which popular times can book up quickly on certain days), and on shore excursions. The room itself promises a king bed, roomy closet and bathroom, and a private veranda with a sliding glass door (which, honestly, I loved leaving open one night to sleep to the sound of the ocean). Upgrade to the Penthouse Veranda Stateroom for more space, and go even bigger with one of the suites. Priority access increases with each level, but it’s the Explorer Suites and Owner’s Suite where you’ll get entirely new spaces, like a living room or dining area (the singular Owner’s Suite even has a dry sauna and boardroom).

Tell us about the crew .

Any cruise line worth its salt should have an all-star crew, and Viking is no exception. Because of the size of the ship, the experience is different than river or expedition, sailings where you really know everyone in a day or two—but, still, every time I went for dinner at The Restaurant or Manfredi’s for Italian, I saw familiar faces who remembered my name (on that note, I especially enjoyed small dining concepts, like Manfredi’s, because I could get to know the team quite quickly and have my martini made to my liking with little more than a nod). I also found it charming that we could fraternize with the lecturers. It was a treat to spot them around the ship and fall into conversations about our upcoming destination. Experts feel accessible on Viking.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Viking doesn’t have any exclusive dining concepts. If you’re a guest, you can eat everywhere, whether you want to post up at the sushi buffet in the globally inspired World Cafe (surprisingly good!), or embark on a tasting menu at The Chef’s Table (novel, but once per trip was plenty, in my opinion). You do get varying priority for reservations at speciality dining concepts based on your room, but you will access to everywhere, if you’d like.

Like most Viking guests, I was enamored with the Norwegian dishes served at Mamsen’s in the afternoon and late night—there were waffles, with brown cheese and berries, split pea soup, and open-faced shrimp sandwiches all inspired by Chairman Torstein Hagen’s mother’s recipes. The aforementioned Manfredi’s, which does Italian food, is a cozy dining room of fresh pasta and decadent olive oil, and zingy fish crudos I was tempted to order two at a time. You’ll find a rotating middle-of-the-road menu at The Restaurant. And while afternoon tea is a popular affair in the atrium-style Wintergarden, I found myself glued to the forward-facing views and deep armchairs at the Explorer’s Bar.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The Nordic Spa is a soothing corner of the ship, where it seems every guest hides away on an at-sea days for a treatment or two. A fellow passenger convinced me to get the results-driven hydrafacial, which (through pore cleansing and an toolbox of devices) I’m told my skin emerged looking years younger. If nothing else, I did get some great skincare tips along the way—I’ve permanently switched to mineral sunscreen as a result—and I nearly feel asleep in the post-treatment spa on a heated stone lounger.

Tell us about the activities and entertainment.

There are a couple shows on this ship, though it’s relatively minimal—this isn’t exactly the show kind of crowd, but the novelty of just a couple performances per sailing sure sparks the interest of most. I found myself in the on-ship nightclub though. More moody jazz club than anything, it was a dimly lit place for live music and drinks served ‘til late (as you may expect, quite the community formed in that place over the 9 days I was on board). Make sure to venture to the tippy top deck for the sports area, where lawn games are available to play, or watch over your daiquiri.

How was the experience for families?

The only kids you’ll find here are 21-year-old and up adults, though I didn’t meet anyone under 30. A number of multi-generational families seemed to revel in getting back together post-pandemic, and the ship had plenty of space for them to congregate.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Malta, Malta, Malta! When Venus launched, she did a number of sailings in and out of Malta, which was an absolute highlight and slightly less-expected offering that I’m glad I got to experience. Keep an eye out for the destination’s return on future Viking itineraries. I loved exploring the ancient ruins of Ggantija, wandering the city streets of Valletta, and even just falling asleep with the two sides of the Grand Harbor glittering around the ship.

Montenegro and Croatia were our other two stops. In Croatia, I found the cities of Dubrovnik and Split quite crowded, so the excursions that took us deeper into the Dalmatian Coast for prosciutto and wine tasting were my favorites; in the cities, meanwhile, solo exploration scratched the itch more than group tours did. Another hot tip: Splurging on excursions like a boat trip to Hvar was a great way to feel like I was off adventuring without a large group of fellow travelers, and helped me see more than just the cities we docked in.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

While there’s an embedded sense of minimalism in the design and experience (which I translate to less waste, accurate or not) some small elements nagged me from a sustainability standpoint—like the tiny toiletry bottles that were constantly replaced (I’m quite sure we all want big dispensers in the shower by now), or the constant offering of plastic water bottles. If I’m living on this ship for nine days, there should be a reusable water bottle that lives with me, to be returned at the end of my stay (because what we also don’t need is more gifted reusable water bottles). Across 930 passengers, those things could make a massive difference—and relieve my personal anxiety.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

This was my first-ever cruise (though I’ve since done a couple others) and I found it a delightful entry point to ocean cruising as a concept. As someone who loves boutique hotels and cozy restaurants, a big ship can be daunting. Even though 930 passengers hardly sounds small to a newbie like me, I found the design inviting and comfy—and when a megaship would tower over us at various docking points, I was reminded explicitly that I was on just the right ship for my style of travel.

Viking Venus Itineraries

Viking venus review, review of viking venus.

The 2020-launched/2021-inaugurated MS Viking Venus cruise ship is the 7th in a 10-unit series of identical vessels built for Viking Ocean Cruises . Viking OCEAN's current plans are for a fleet of 16 sisterships, all of which are Fincantieri -built and Norway-flagged.

The vessel (IMO number 9833175) is currently Norway- flagged (MMSI 257552000) and registered in Bergen .

History - construction and ownership

The 930-passenger ship Viking Venus offers destination-oriented cruising experience, with few at-sea days, long in-ports days and more exciting overnights in key spots. Onboard amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, free shore excursions, wine and beer with no charge at dinner and lunch.

Viking Venus cruise ship (VIKING OCEAN)

Each of the Viking Ocean ships offers many ticket price-inclusive / complimentary amenities and services, such as all shore excursions, transfers, Wi-Fi, wine and beer (at lunches and dinners), access to Nordic Spa (steam room, thalassotherapy pool, hot tub, snow room / grotto, sauna, cold plunge pool). The infinity pool (resistance swimming pool located aft on Deck 7 / at the ship's stern) is another unique and complimentary facility.

All Viking Ocean liners were built according to the latest maritime navigation regulations and equipped with latest marine safety systems, including "safe return to port". The ships also implement some of the maritime industry's latest technologies, including energy-saving hybrid engines (diesel generators and gas turbines), optimized hulls and bulbous bows for max fuel efficiency. Ship design also features the common for Viking River Cruises longships solar panels (installed on the Magradome pool cover) additionally minimizing the vessel's exhaust pollution.

Decks and Cabins

Viking Venus staterooms (465 total) include 47x Suites, 32x Penthouses and 386x Veranda/Balcony cabins in 18 grades.

All passenger cabins are balconied and offer all the industry's modern amenities and services, including King-size beds ("Viking Explorer", deluxe mattresses and linens, Cashmere blankets), en suite bathroom (heated floor, heated mirror, glass-door shower, hairdryer, premium bath products and toiletries /by Freyja, bathrobes, slippers, towel warmers), seating area (sofa, coffee table, vanity desk with chair, wardrobe, full-length mirror with mini lights), satellite phone, smart HDTV (3D, Infotainment / interactive TV system for Internet access, room service ordering, movies-on-demand, live webcams views, Viking Cruises channel for news, enrichment lectures and port talks), in-room binoculars, electronic safe box, individual air-conditioning, coffee machine, mini-bar (replenished daily with bottled water, soft drinks, snacks).

The boat has 10 decks , of which 6 are with passenger cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

Viking Venus offers the following dining venues: Restaurant (dining room), buffets (Viking Deli, World Cafe), Aquavit Terrace (alfresco), speciality (Italian Grill, Chef's Table), Private Dining (2 rooms). Viking Venus deals are inclusive of shore excursions, complimentary alcohol (wine and beer at lunch and dinner) and Wi-Fi.

Viking Ocean cruise ship (aerial)

Viking OCEAN's Venus ship has as signature facilities two swimming pools (Main Pool and Aft Infinity Pool), a covered pool deck (with Jacuzzi, Bar & Grill), Viking Living Room (Atrium Lobby Lounge), two Cinemas, a modern wellness complex (Spa & Fitness Center, Beauty Salon), Wintergarden (poolside area), Aquavit Terrace (aft outdoor bar lounge with Infinity Pool and Hot Tub), Piano Bar Lounge (Torshavn), dedicated sports deck (deck 9/with a Walking Track and Outdoor Gym/Yoga area), Theatre Lounge & Bar, Lobby Bar, various shops and brand boutiques.

The walk-around Lanai/Promenade Deck fully encircles the boat (deck 2). The two-deck Explorer's Lounge has a huge bow-facing observation area which is a unique feature that lots of modern cruise vessels lack. Many of the ship's features reflect a boutique hotel feel.

All Viking Ocean ships have an onboard "snow room". Viking's "Snow Grotto" is a spa retreat with powdery snow falling down from the ceiling. The experience (touted beneficial to the body's blood circulation) includes heating in a sauna (steam bath), then walking into this small room fitted with benches and with dark stone walls illuminated by blue light. The snow on the floor is kept at sub-freezing temperatures. This Arctic-themed facility is part of the ship's thermal suite (within the spa complex). This relaxation area has also 1 hot tub, sauna room, heated ceramic loungers, therapeutic showers, salt-water thermal pool. Snow Grotto access is complimentary to all passengers.

Itineraries

Viking Venus itinerary program (like all Viking Ocean ships) offers destination-rich itineraries with "small ship cruise" tour programs (complimentary) and unique onboard experiences. Compared to similar class ships operated by other companies, Viking Ocean itineraries feature fewer sea days and longer port days, with many overnight port stays.

In the UK, Viking Ocean ships are homeported in London-Greenwich England .

In late-September 2020, Viking Ocean released a new departure for Viking Venus. The 29-day "Baltic Jewels and The Midnight Sun" itinerary ( London-Greenwich to Stockholm Sweden ) is scheduled to depart on July 22 (2021), visits 10 countries and includes 19 guided (complimentary to all passengers) shore excursions. Prices start from USD 18500 (~EUR 15830) per person for Veranda stateroom (double occupancy).

In mid-March 2021 were announced the new 8-day "England's Scenic Shores" itineraries for Viking Venus leaving roundtrip from the UK ( Portsmouth and Liverpool ). These were Viking Ocean's first scheduled for 2021 departures (May 22, May 29, June 5) following the COVID-related fleetwide pause in the company's passenger shipping operations. The first ex-UK cruise starts after the christening ceremony (planned for May 17) and the voyages were open for booking to UK residents only.

In May were added July-October departures (11-day roundtrips from Valletta Malta ) for three VIKING OCEAN ships (Venus, Sea, Star).

  • The "Malta and Adriatic Jewels" itinerary started with an overnight in Valletta and visited ports in Montenegro ( Kotor ) and Croatia ( Dubrovnik , Split , Zadar , Sibenik ), plus Gozo Island (Malta, Mgarr Harbour) .
  • The "Malta and Greek Isles Discovery" itinerary also started with an overnight in Valletta and visited ports in Greece ( Kalamata , Piraeus-Athens , Santorini , Rhodes , Crete/Souda ).
  • The "Malta and the Western Mediterranean" itinerary starts with Valletta overnight and visited ports in Sicily ( Messina ), mainland-Italy ( Naples , Civitavecchia-Rome , Livorno , Genoa ), and Spain ( Barcelona ).
  • Later was added the 21-day "Malta, the Adriatic and Greece". The B2B itinerary started with Valletta overnight and visited Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Sibenik, Mgarr Malta, Valletta (overnight), Kalamata, Piraeus-Athens (overnight), Santorini, Rhodes, Souda Crete.

For the ex-Malta 2021 season, Viking partnered with Lufthansa (Deutsche Lufthansa AG - Germany's largest airline) to offer non-stop Transatlantic flights between New Jersey USA (Newark Liberty Airport) and Malta Airport, exclusively for Viking OCEAN customers.

All Viking OCEAN ships offer destination-rich itineraries featured with the brand's new "small ship cruise" tour and onboard experience. Compared to similar class vessels operated by other companies, Viking OCEAN's itineraries feature fewer sea days and longer port days, with a lot of overnight port stays.

Viking Venus Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Ancona yard/hull number 6283) has volume 47842 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 4912 tons, max draught 6,3 m. The powerplant is based on MAN marine diesel engines (model 12V32/9L32/44) with combined output 23,52 MW (22000 hp). The registered shipowner is VIKING OCEAN CRUISES SHIP VII, while the registered manager is VIKING OCEAN CRUISES LTD.

Among the vessel's innovative marine technologies are its energy-saving hybrid engines, top-deck solar panels, pollution-minimizing exhaust system. This ship also uses seawater as a lubricant for its propeller shaft bearings. This technology lowers the vessel's maintenance costs and also the risk of pollution. Replacing the biodegradable oils, the water is being directly discharged into the ocean.

Viking OCEAN represents a "smaller ship" travel concept. The relatively shallow draft (21 ft / 6,3 m), design (hull and superstructure) and technology allow the ship to directly access even small ports. The ship's smaller size also guarantees an easy and faster passenger embarkation/debarkation process. Another unique feature for the "affordable luxury" ocean cruising market is that regardless of cabin categories, all Viking Ocean deals are price-inclusive of the shore excursions in all ports in the cruise ship itinerary.

All passenger cabins are with private step-out verandas, and about 1/5th larger than average standard staterooms on the ocean cruising market. An interesting feature of the ship is the dining room. This venue could be transformed into an outdoor casual dining place thanks to its floor-to-ceiling sliding windows. For Viking Ocean ships' interiors were contracted SMC Design ( London -based interior design company) and Rottet Studios (LA-based hotel design company).

Viking Cruises deals (on all river and ocean liners) are inclusive of shore excursions (land tours), onboard entertainment and dining (including at speciality restaurants), drinks and alcohol (beer, wine /at lunch and dinner), 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi.

In April 2018, Fincantieri contracted the Norwegian marine company Scanship to supply all the liner's cleaning systems - food waste processing, waste incineration, garbage handling, wastewater treatment plants. Scanship's wastewater purification system treats both greywater (sullage/sinks, showers, baths) and blackwater (toilets).

In February 2019, Fincantieri contracted the Canadian company Thordon Bearings Inc to provide newbuild's bearings for the propeller shaft. The ship's propeller shaft system (Thordon COMPAC) is seawater-lubricated and based on 100% grease-oil-free bearings. The innovative propeller shaft system will be also installed on all the following Viking Ocean liners ( on order or under construction ) with scheduled deliveries between 2021-2027. These systems are supplied and installed by Pedrotec (Thordon's authorized distributor in Italy).

For Viking Venus (yard/hull number 6283), the shipbuilder contracted De Wave Group for the ship's interior outfitting.

  • De Wave Group ( Genoa -based manufacturing company) specializes in newbuild cruise ships and yachts interior outfitting. The company was formed via merger of three companies - De Wave (cabins and wet units), Precetti (catering areas) and Spencer Contract (public areas).
  • On Viking Venus, De Wave Group manufactured and assembled the modules for building the wellness complex (Health Centre, Spa Area) as well as the Retail Shops' walkway.

The vessel Viking Venus (7th in the "Viking Ocean" series) was launched/floated out from drydock on June 11, 2020, at Fincantieri 's shipyard in Ancona Italy . The boat was officially delivered to Viking Cruises on April 15, 2021.

In early-January 2021, Viking announced that the Venus ship's Godmother will be Anne Margaret Diamond (1954-born British journalist and broadcaster). Anne Diamond is best known as the host of the popular in the UK morning TV shows - Good Morning Britain (1983-1992) and Good Morning with Anne and Nick (1992-96). She also worked for Loose Women (talk show), Daily Mail (journalist) and Since 2003 is a regular guest on the discussion TV shows "The Wright Stuff" and "Jeremy Vine". Since March 2020, Anne Diamond is a key figure on Viking.TV (Viking's online TV channel).

The boat's christening ceremony was held on May 17, 2021, coinciding with the Norwegian Constitution Day and the Maiden Voyage. The England coastal voyage (out of Portsmouth England ) carried only VIP guests and no regular passengers.

  • The naming ceremony was actually held at sea (In the English Channel) and featured Anne Diamond wielding a traditional Viking axe in order to cut the ribbon that sent a bottle of Norwegian Akvavit (traditional for Scandinavia distilled spirit) against the ship's hull.
  • For the special event, in the Atrium's Lobby was installed an "Air Fountain" (designed by the NYC Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Wurtzel).
  • During the evening festivities were played exclusively recorded concerts wit performances by Sissel Kyrkjebo (Norwegian crossover soprano and Viking Jupiter 's godmother), Tor Jaran Apold (Norwegian violinist), and the Libera Choir (all-boy English vocal group).

Viking Venus' first passenger cruises (5x roundtrips from Portsmouth UK/themed "England's Scenic Shores" ) were scheduled for the period May 22 through June 26, 2021.

Inaugural itineraries 2021

Viking Ocean's Venus ship cruise itineraries were officially announced in late July 2019.

Next tables show all maiden voyages by destination and homeport, with lowest prices per person (in USD, Balcony Cabin rates) with double occupancy.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the company canceled a total of 8x Viking Venus cruises scheduled between January 26 and April 19. The Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for May 3.

2024 is Novak Djokovic's 'wildcard year', says Serena Williams' ex-coach Rick Macci

N ovak Djokovic is in the middle of his worst season on the ATP Tour since becoming a top player. However, the Serb might like flying under the radar this year after his 2023 success, according to Serena Williams' former coach Rick Macci.

Djokovic has not won a single title in the first five months of 2024; the last time he went through such a drought was in 2006, when he was yet to crack the top echelons of men's tennis. The World No. 1 has dropped five of his 17 matches this year, including a straight-set upset loss to Alejandro Tabilo at the Italian Open this week.

The 24-time Major winner, however, remains a contender to pick up the remaining three Major tournaments this year. Rick Macci, who worked with Venus and Serena Williams in the early 1990s, believes that the Serb might be laying low after the 2023 season that saw him win the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.

The American took to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday (May 16) to insist that 2024 could be Novak Djokovic 's wildcard year. Moreover, he stated that the 36-year-old may have become relatively more carefree since tying the Open-era record for most Major triumphs in singles (shared with Margaret Court).

"This year is the WILDCARD for the JOKER. The mind controls the body and after his beyond historic feat in 2023 and unofficially being crowned the GOAT instead of center court the Serbian Sniper might be playing on his BOAT. @DjokerNole," Macci wrote on X.

"Novak Djokovic hijacked the ATP Tour" - When Serena Williams' ex-coach praised the Serb's dominance

Rick Macci has a certified technical acumen in tennis, having coached not only the Williams sisters but also the likes of Maria Sharapova, Jennifer Capriati and Andy Roddick. Thus, it is worth having a look at his recent opinions on Novak Djokovic and his big three rivals, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Last month, Macci took to his X account to discuss Djokovic, Nadal and Federer's respective influence on men's tennis. While the 69-year-old admitted the latter two had some admirable traits that translated into their success, he gave his kudos to the 24-time Major winner for denying his rivals silverware and dominating the field .

"Fed was a JACK OF ALL TRADES. Rafa was a JACK HAMMER. Novak HIJACKED the ATP TOUR. @DjokerNole," Rick Macci wrote on X in April.

Virgin Voyages' new ship Brilliant Lady will sail from this major US city in 2025

Virgin Voyages’ new ship is on its way.

The adults-only cruise line announced its fourth vessel, Brilliant Lady, will begin sailing in September 2025 from New York.

“The world has been waiting for us to announce Brilliant Lady’s debut, and she’s almost here,” the line’s CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said in a news release. “At Virgin Voyages, we’re constantly innovating and looking for opportunities to provide even better value for our Sailors with greater choice. Virgin fans have been asking for years if we’d consider sailing from places like New York, Los Angeles or Alaska, so it's wonderful to give our Sailors and First Mates what they wanted: fresh itineraries spanning North America from 5-14 nights in length with new experiences that they will remember forever.”

Brilliant Lady was previously set to start service in the Caribbean late last year, but the line delayed its launch due to “unexpected construction, supply chain and staffing challenges that have delayed the introduction,” the line said in September.

The ship will launch from New York instead and spend its inaugural season on a North American tour, sailing from the Big Apple, Miami, Los Angeles and Seattle, completing a Panama Canal crossing in the process. While similar to Virgin’s previous vessels, the ship will have an adapted frame and is crafted for transiting the canal and navigating waters like those in Alaska.

Travelers can submit deposits for priority booking on Alaska voyages beginning May 8. “Sailors previously slated to sail on Brilliant Lady will be given priority access to book a MerMaiden voyage,” the line added in the release.

Virgin will also offer a multi-cruise Brilliant 4 You Pass, following the launch of season passes on its Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady ships earlier this year.
