12 Beautiful English Countryside Getaways to Enjoy in 2024

Sometime’s I become so preoccupied with exploring the world that I forget about all the beautiful English Countryside getaway locations right on my doorstep.

The English countryside is often, sadly, overlooked. Visitors from abroad flock to London , stay a few days before moving onto the rest of Europe. But they are missing the best bit!

Whilst England is famed for its pretty countryside with rolling hills, forests and rivers, the charming villages themselves are well worth a visit. There is so much history in England and old buildings, castles and churches galore to reflect this.

The English are notoriously a friendly bunch with a cracking dry sense of humour (if a little eccentric at times…)

Ok, full disclosure; I am English though living in Wales so I may be a tad biased when I tell you the English are the most friendly people worldwide. I’m sure there are some facts out there somewhere to back me up..?!

My favourite thing about an English countryside getaway is the multitude of cafes for afternoon tea, the beautiful walks and spending evenings in a cosy old pub, warming myself by a roaring fire and tucking into some hearty pub food.

So if I’ve convinced you to explore beyond London next time, here are 12 beautiful English Countryside getaways suggested by travel bloggers to inspire your trip to rural England!

But first one of my own favourite places…

English Countryside Getaway to Monmouth

Well, you could argue that this is a Welsh countryside getaway as in truth, Monmouth borders both England and Wales. It’s the town where I grew up and recently I heard it was Britains happiest town according to Capitol radio!

It’s no wonder why really. Monmouth is one of those places where community spirit is really strong. There’s always so much going on whether that be a free music festival or a country fair. The pubs are always bustling and lively and there are plenty of cafes for a cream tea or two.

Monmouth is also home to the only remaining fortified medieval bridge in the UK making it a popular place for history buffs to visit. Read more about Monmouth in my  Monmouth Visitors Guide .

English Countryside Getaway to The Lake District

By Kathi Kamleitner

English Countryside Getaway to Exmoor

By Suzanne Easton

Exmoor is located on the border of Somerset and Devon and is one of the smaller National Parks in England.

It is a beautiful area to explore with deep wooded valleys, streams and high moorland.  It was used as the inspiration for the Lorna Doone book by RD Blackmoore and still has a romantic wilderness feel.

Exmoor reaches the coast with the seaside town of Minehead being on the boundary of the national park, perfect for a beach walk or supplies before heading away from the town.

One of our favourite places is Tarr Steps.  An ancient clapper bridge with beautiful walks and wild swimming in the river during the summer months.  Nearby is Liscombe Farm with gorgeous dairy ice cream from the cows that you see grazing near the river.

Exmoor is also known for its deer rut.  High on the moorland in the autumn months, the stags collect their hinds and congregate showing great displays of their strength, fighting other stags and generally being aggressive and loud.

Staying on Exmoor is really special as it has Dark Skies status and the stars really do shine on the moors at night.  We love the Dunkery Beacon Hotel , indulgence but worth every penny.

English countryside getaway to hambledon in hampshire.

By Kelly Mongan

With its stunning vineyard and charming village pub, there’s no better place for a weekend away than Hambledon.

Located in Hampshire, this town is often referred to as “the cradle of cricket”, since it is where the modern cricket rules were first played (head to the Bat & Ball pub if you’re a cricket fan!).

Hambledon is located in South Downs National Park and therefore offers stunning countryside walks, through the vineyard and cabbage fields, or even up Butser Hill.

It’s also a Dark Sky zone, meaning you’ll be treated to the most wonderful view of the stars at night.

If you want to truly experience the English countryside, there is no better place to stay than Wriggly Tin Shepherds Huts . Wriggly Tin offers glamping in its finest form and is just a ten-minute walk from Hambledon Vineyard.

At the vineyard, it’s possible to do a tour and taste their award-winning sparkling wine.

If you’re looking to explore more of the area, Winchester is an easy day trip, as is Arundel Castle. Or, for walking/cycling trips, you have the whole of South Downs National Park at your disposal!

English Countryside Getaway to Wensleydale in The Yorkshire Dales

By Sarah Poitras

This summer, we spent four days in the Yorkshire Dales for our first English countryside getaway. We based ourselves in Wensleydale for our Yorkshire Dales holiday .

If you like walking, Wensleydale is a great place to visit in the English countryside. You’ll be treated to rolling green hills, picturesque stone fences, and of course tons of sheep. And it’s a great place for people of all abilities as there are many different walks of varying difficulty levels.

There are also castles! We particularly enjoyed our visit to Bolton Castle, which is quite well preserved and has beautiful grounds to explore. It would also make for a good family outing (we saw a lot of kids enjoying themselves).

We based ourselves in two towns, Hawes and Masham, for their locations and for their local culinary delights. Hawes is home to Wensleydale Creamery which makes truly delicious cheese. And Masham has not one but two local breweries: Theakston Brewery and Black Sheep Brewery.

In Hawes, we stayed at Spring Bank House , a traditional B&B, and in Masham, we stayed at The Bay Horse , a traditional pub. Both served tasty and hearty breakfasts and had friendly and helpful owners. We would highly recommend both if you’re looking for places to stay in Wensleydale.

English Countryside Getaway to Lacock, Wiltshire

By Chandrima Chakraborty

If you’re looking for some beautiful English countryside getaways, the village of Lacock definitely needs to be on your list.

Located in the English county of Wiltshire (around 30 minutes from the city of Bath by car), this little village will transport you back in time, to almost 200 years ago. It’s maintained entirely by the National Trust. And mind you, it’s not a museum. It’s very much a functioning village.

Take a stroll down its many alleys and admire the cute traditional cottages in the village. There’s also an old tithe barn, church, and workhouse.

Here you can see the honour system still in use. Residents lay out their homemade jams, marmalades, buns, and scones outside their homes – unguarded and unsupervised. You’re expected to take what you want and leave the payment right there.

If you feel hungry, stop for a bite at one of its cute little bakeries or cafes. Also, don’t forget to check out the Fox Talbot Museum and the Lacock Abbey (especially if you’re a Harry Potter fan).

The village has also been a filming location for many popular movies and TV shows including Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, and BBC’s Pride and Prejudice.

Lacock can easily be covered on a day trip from London . You might even want to combine it with a visit to Bath and Stonehenge like we did.

English Countryside Getaways in Northumberland, North England

English countryside getaways to the south downs.

Picture proper English countryside and there’s a good chance you think of bright yellow flowering fields, rolling green hills and winding tracks. That’s the South Downs.

This enormous Sussex and Hampshire national park is a prime picnicking spot, with great cycling and walking – and all just 20 minutes from the bustle of Brighton and Hove.

Come for the next eclipse or to stargaze (it’s a Dark Sky Park) or pop over on a sunny day to soak up the country air and get away from it all. Spotting wildlife will have you keen to stay and there’s a cracking pub, The Devils Dyke, where you can refuel with good food and drink.

For day trips, you shouldn’t miss exploring colourful spots on the South Coast like Brighton , Eastbourne and Worthing, which will also offer great hotels. The Courtlands Hotel in Hove is a great option for those looking to splash out, while The Brighton Breeze Hotel is somewhere budget that I have stayed and can recommend.

English Countryside Getaways to Teesdale, The North Pennines

By Sarah Carter

Getaway to the little known Teesdale – part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The River Tees flows down through the dale, providing stunning waterfalls at Cauldron Snout, High Force and Low Force, with spectacular and easy walks along her banks.

The gateway to this glorious dale is the market town of Barnard Castle, named after the castle of the same name which was built in the 12 th century. Famous visitors to the town have included author Charles Dickens and landscape painter JMW Turner.

Here you’ll find great places to stay, including the friendly and welcoming 17 th century Old Well Inn , which backs onto the castle walls.

There are other fabulous cosy pubs and the magnificent Bowes Museum which boasts links to the Queen Mother. Explore the famous Butter Market or Market Cross, now serving as a beleaguered traffic island, but which was once the town jail!

There are great walks – a short 6km round trip takes you between the two main waterfalls further up the dale from Low Force to High Force and back. This is a stunning area of England in which to take a break, no matter what the time of year!

English Countryside Getaways to The Cotswolds

By Emily Cole

The Cotswolds is full of fantastic countryside; think thatched, honey coloured cottages nestling in the hollows of gently rolling hills, perfect for country walks.

There’s something for everyone in the Cotswolds. The most famous villages are Castle Combe, Bibury and Bourton on the Water, which are usually voted among the prettiest villages in the UK.

The Cotswold Way runs for 100 miles along the top of the hills linking Chipping Campden in the north of the region to Bath in the south.  Any section of this walk gives fantastic views and access to quaint towns.  Broadway Tower is a highlight along the route.

You can also discover a wealth of history in the region.  Sudeley Castle is a former royal palace and lies half in ruins, half still lived-in stately home.  Blenheim Palace is on the edge of the Cotswolds and is one of the most fantastic buildings in the UK. Cogges Manor Farm is a historic farm which was used in the filming of Downton Abbey.

There are numerous places to stay in the Cotswolds, although choosing a central location such as Barnsley House near Cirencester will allow you to get to both the north and south of the Cotswolds in less than an hour.

The Cotswolds are only a couple of hours away from London, making the region a perfect weekend getaway.

English Countryside Getaways to The Peak District

Just about an hour outside of Manchester lies the Peak District, a landscape like no other in Britain.

You will find rolling hills, moorland plateaus, and steep-sided deep dales. When you pair the amazing landscape with quaint villages housing amazing places to eat and drink, market towns, and historic houses, you are bound to have a vacation like no other.

Many people visiting the Peak District enjoy going out for a day hike that ends with a proper meal and ale at one of the many historic pubs you will find along the way.

Besides just hiking, you can go spelunking in a cavern, cycle the windy roads or even take a cable car up the famous Heights of Abraham.

If you don’t quite fancy the outdoor activities, there are plenty of villages to stop over and shop till you drop.

There are also plenty of charming bed and breakfasts to choose from if you would like to stay the night. While we were visiting we found a quaint little Airbnb to stay at where we were able to cook a full English fry up in the morning!

With everything the Peak District has to offer, it is definitely a must for anyone looking to visit a charming English countryside!

Countryside

Both genteel and wild, there’s nothing quite like the English countryside for rural escapes with its patchwork hills, dramatic dales, ancient woodlands and winding country roads. All well and good, but what is there to do in England’s countryside exactly? Quite a lot, actually. Admire the grand interiors of a stately home before catching a play in the surrounding gardens, travel back in time with visits to ancient stone circles and crumbling castles, or step into a chocolate box of quaint villages and market towns and live like a local, trying farmhouse cheeses, cream teas and real ales along the way.

most beautiful countryside in england

Looking for the best English countryside? Having lived in England all my life, these are my favourite countryside spots and beautiful places to visit.

England is a wonderful country with so many different landscapes to explore. But you don’t have to travel to places like the Lake District to find gorgeous countryside in England. You can find it all over the country.

Lulworth is one of the most beautiful countryside in england

But it’s not just walking in the woodland that you can do in the English countryside. There are also historic sites, scenic cliff trails, delicious food at country pubs, and quaint villages brimming with charm.

If you are looking for an escape from city life or just want to experience something new, then this article will give you all the information you need to know about what makes the beautiful British countryside so wonderful. It’s also why I sometimes prefer staying in England to travelling abroad.

Where is The Most Beautiful Countryside in England?

It’s all around the country. You can find beautiful countryside in England everywhere. From Cornwall to Cambridgeshire , there is stunning scenery across all four of England’s corners .

How To Get to The English Countryside

You also don’t have to travel far from the large cities to reach some greenery. In most cases, you can get to the English countryside within a couple of hours, and there are great public transport links too .

Beautiful Cotswolds villages in the English countryside

The train travels from London to Edinburgh , branches out to all major cities, and stops at plenty of other towns and villages in between.

The bus links are pretty good too, although they’re slightly slower. They’ll also likely drop you off at a more central location and you’ll be able to reach more remote destinations than the trains.

The Most Beautiful Countryside Getaways in England

So, what is the most beautiful English countryside? These are a few top picks for a little slice of remote England.

1. The Lake District

If you’re looking for mountains, lakes, and beautiful scenery all in one place then this is the ideal destination. The most popular part of the Lake District includes places like Keswick, Windermere, Ambleside, and Grasmere.

The lake district

The whole of the Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. After visiting this natural beauty, you really won’t be surprised that it’s considered one of England’s greatest treasures.

You’ll find rolling landscapes, sweeping lakes, and picturesque villages. It’s the perfect place to get away and surround yourself with breathtaking scenery instead of a busy office building!

What to do there:

The Lake District is most famous for its breathtaking hikes , cycling trails, and outdoor activities. If you love to keep active, then you’ll have no shortage of things to do. You can go for a leisurely stroll or walk around one of the District’s beautiful lakes.

Also, take in the views and explore nearby villages, hike up England’s highest peak, or cycle through valleys with hills on either side. There is so much to do here and so much beauty.

Where to stay:

If you want to stay overnight, there are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in the Lake District. You’ll find most bookings will be made months in advance, so be sure to book early. A few top hotels are the Beech Hill Hotel and Spa and The Wild Boar.

2. Cornwall

Of course, Cornwall deserves a spot on this list. It is well known for being one of the most beautiful places in England. The coastal area is blessed with sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs overlooking crashing waves below.

Cornwall is beautiful english countryside

There’s no shortage of wildlife either including seals lounging on the shore and oystercatchers wading in the water. The most popular part of Cornwall is around Penzance, with St Ives not far behind. But you’ll find beautiful stretches of coastline all over this county.

What to do:

Cornwall is a paradise for walkers who want to explore dramatic cliffs and breathtaking views. Most of the coastline is easily accessible with well-maintained paths. There are also plenty of options for boat trips along its coast.

For history buffs, Cornwall is steeped in myth. You’ll find castle ruins where King Authur was said to have lived (I highly recommend visiting Tintagel Castle) and many ancient stones and megalithic sites.

St Ives and Penzance are the most popular for accommodation in Cornwall, so naturally, they’ll also be the busiest and the most expensive. For a few affordable options, The Land’s End Hotel and Hotel Penzance are great choices.

Be sure to book in advance as this area gets very busy during holiday periods.

3. Peak District

If you’re looking for a spot with beautiful hills and green pastures, the Peak District will be right up your street. Most famous for its rolling landscapes, it’s home to many of England’s most historic manor houses too, so it’s perfect if you want to take in some rural English charm.

The peak district

There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor lovers and hikers. You can hike popular trails like Mam Tor or Kinder Scout or cycle to pretty villages along historic routes. With a wide range of activities, you won’t run out of things to explore in the Peak District.

One great thing about exploring this area is that there’s lots of wildlife. You’ll be able to spot animals like red kites soaring high overhead with their large wingspans and forked tails or deer grazing on green hillsides.

The most popular areas for walking include Edale Valley, Mam Tor Ridge, and Kinder Scout (where you can admire iconic views). Dark Peak Forest is also lovely, with ancient woodland trees and pretty rivers.

If you enjoy walking then head towards one of its picturesque villages. Monsal Dale, Edale, or Castleton offer idyllic walks through scenic countryside as well as lovely small towns.

There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs dotted all over the Peak District, so you won’t have any trouble finding accommodation. The most popular villages to stay in in the Peak District are Edale, Castleton, and Buxton. Robin Hood Farm B&B is a great place to stay.

4. Cotswolds

Famous for some of the most beautiful villages in England , the Cotswolds has some of the most beautiful UK countryside. The Cotswolds is also a pretty large area – it spans through the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire.

It’s most famous for its rolling green hills, and traditional thatched cottages in picture-perfect villages like Bibury, Stow on the Wold, and Castle Combe. There are also plenty of historic market towns including Chipping Campden and Cirencester.

One of the most popular things to do here is to simply explore these beautiful old English towns on foot. You’ll pass chocolate box cottages, tiny market towns, cobbled streets, and old stone bridges crossing little streams. The entire area looks like it’s been plucked out of a fairytale.

In summer, you’ll be able to see the Insta-famous lavender fields in bloom. In autumn you’ll see trees turning leaves to golds, reds, and oranges.

There are also plenty of tours around this area like the Stonehenge tour which will allow you to marvel at England’s curious stone circle. You can even explore Harry Potter film sets like Lacock Abbey.

Cotswolds has a range of accommodation options – from quaint little country cottages and hotels with views along the River Wye or through green fields in Elton, Bibury ( the Bull Hotel is a great choice here), and Chipping Campden. The Courtyard Cirencester is a great self-catering option.

10. High Weald

For one of the best countryside getaways in England that’s not too far from London, head to High Weald. It’s ideal if you need to escape from city life but don’t want to travel too far.

This area has a lot to offer – most of it is made up of rolling hills and lush meadows with villages dotted across the landscape. You’ll find plenty of farms, country pubs, and historic buildings to explore.

High weald is a great place to visit in the English countryside

High Weald has a few popular visitor attractions. A few include Mayfield Lavender Fields which offers you one of the most fragrant places in England. With over 40 acres (162,000 sq m) of fields filled with rows upon rows of lavenders, it’s a pretty amazing sight!

The most famous village here is Dormansland which has some lovely historic buildings, including St Mary’s Church and The Priory pub.

If you’re looking for something more modern then why not try Beckenham? There are plenty of shops along Regents Road as well as delightful cafes along the High Street.

There are more than enough things to see and do in High Weald. Places like Ashdown Forest are great spots for wildlife sightings. You can also go rock climbing at Copehill Down or horse riding along bridleways through farmland.

If you prefer something less strenuous then enjoy some time on the Kent and East Sussex Railway which runs through the area. Hop on a steam train and experience England’s countryside by rail.

The cutest English countryside towns here are East Grinstead, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, and Brenchley. All offer plenty of attractions as well as accommodation options including bed & breakfasts (B&Bs), cottages, or hotels like the Hotel du Vin and Bistro .

✅ Discover the best places to stay in High Weald

My personal favourite countryside in England is either Dartmoor National Park or the Lake District.

I love the wildness of Dartmoor and the beautiful woodland areas, plus the fact that it’s such a hidden gem in southern England. And I love the Lake District for its incredible hiking trails.

However, you can find beautiful countryside in England everywhere. From Cornwall to Cambridgeshire, there is stunning scenery across all four of England’s corners .

How to Get To the English Countryside

The bus links are pretty good too, although they’re slightly slower. They’ll also likely drop you off at a more central location and you’ll have to taxi the rest of the way. However, you’ll still be able to reach more remote destinations than the trains.

Does London Have Countryside?

London has plenty of beautiful parks and gardens to explore, most of which are within walking distance of the city centre. The most popular ones include Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Holland Park.

But, to physically get lost in the countryside, you will have to travel outside the city centre. Although, you won’t have to travel too far – most of the countryside is just a stone’s throw away from London!

Where is The Closest Countryside to London?

If you are looking for a quick escape from the bustle of city life or only have one day in London , then head to Hampstead Heath. This hilly area is just northwest of central London. Most people can reach it on foot or by bike in about an hour.

If you have slightly longer in the city, you can also visit places like Kentish Town and Stepney Green for a small sliver of the countryside near the busy capital.

When Should You Visit the British Countryside?

For the most enjoyable experience, I suggest visiting between the late spring and autumn. During these times, the weather is best, ideal for outdoor activities, and the scenery is gorgeous.

These are a few of the top times to visit:

  • Late Spring – This is when most of its flowers are in bloom. There is plenty of green space for outdoor activities like cycling or walking around lakes. You’ll find pleasant temperatures and most of the winter tourists have left.
  • July – August – This is the most popular time to visit, but also one of the busiest periods. It’s peak season and the school summer holidays and a lot of locals will be making the most of England’s best weather and flocking to Cornwall and the seaside areas. However, you may still be able to find remote spots away from the typical tourist trail.
  • September – This is a good time to visit if you want some fresh air, but don’t like crowds or too much heat. It’s also an opportunity to see the last of the summer sun and enjoy late-summer fruits such as grapes, apples, and pears.
  • Late Autumn – If you arrive in October – November, then the leaves will be changing or have already fallen, but the snow and frost won’t have quite arrived yet. This season will give you some stunning views of almost leafless trees against blue skies with grazing sheep nearby. It’s also a great time for apple picking. But, you will probably have to bring a raincoat and waterproof shoes!

Worst times to visit

The English countryside can be enjoyed year-round, however, it does get very cold, wet, dark, and dreary during winter so visits will need to be planned and packed carefully .

Depending on what you want to do, trips can be ruined by the near-constant rain that England is known for. The same can be said for early spring , between February and March.

You’ll likely experience lots of chilly weather and frequent showers if you visit during these times. Nonetheless, if you visit in December, you will also be able to see some of the best Christmas markets in England.

Overall…

The English countryside is vast, varied, and beautiful. A trip to the countryside is one of my favourite things to do in the UK and there are some stunning spots in England just waiting to be explored.

If you love hiking and exploring the great outdoors, I can almost guarantee that you’ll fall in love with the countryside in England. I hope you’ve enjoyed my recommendations and that you’ll love rural England as much as I do!

The Best Countryside Day Trips from London: By Train

countryside day trips from london by train

London is a wonderful city, but where England really shines is the in the countryside. That's why if you have the time, we very strongly recommend getting outside the city and soaking up some of the fresh air in one of England's lovely villages or market towns.

We know a lot of our readers don't feel comfortable driving in England, so we've decided to focus on destinations you can reach by train. Adding in bus trips would open up a LOT more, but who really wants to spend half of their day trip transferring between buses? Certainly not us.

So, for those who want fun, simple countryside day trips from London by train, we've put together a list of some of our favourites. Since these ARE day trips, we've limited our recommendations to places you can reach by train in roughly 2 hours or less. The great part? That covers a lot more than you might think.

British Countryside Day Trips from London

Moreton-in-marsh.

tour to countryside

Whether you're looking for a day trip or planning on spending several days in the Cotswolds, Moreton-in-Marsh is an ideal location for anyone who plans on travelling the area without a car. You can get a direct route from London Paddington, and because it's a market town, there's plenty to see and do.

Lovers of literature and lagers can stop in at The Bell Inn , a pub generally considered to be the inspiration for the “Prancing Pony” in Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien used to meet his brother there for drinks.

On Tuesdays, Moreton-in-Marsh is home to the largest open-air market in the Cotswolds, where you can browse local merchants like the Cotswold Cheese Company. They produce more than 80 unique cheeses, many of them inspired by famous British figures.

If it's nature you're craving, don't miss The Batsford Arboretum . They have one of Great Britain's largest private tree collections, and their 56 acres of paths and gardens are virtually flawless. It's about a mile and a half from the central village, and there's a scenic footpath, the Monarch's Way, that takes you directly there. You can also reserve a taxi or get a bus.

If your goal is to see MORE of the Cotswolds, consider a tour. This one from Go Cotswolds takes you through Chipping Camden, Broadway Tower, Stow-on-the-Wold, Arlington Row, and Bourton-on-the-Water (with stops to look around). The Secret Cottage is another great option. I sent my parents on that one a couple years ago, and they spoke very highly of it.

tour to countryside

If you're looking for a Cotswold village full of scenes so gorgeous it's not even fair, consider a day trip to Kingham. It was named was named “England’s Favorite Village” in 2004.

The village is home to The Wild Rabbit, an inn with a delightful bar and fine dining restaurant. You can snack on small plates and nibbles in the bar, or arrange to have a more formal meal in the restaurant.

Prefer something a bit more casual? Try the Kingham Plough instead.

To really get an appreciation for the lovely countryside, consider a tour with Cotswold Electric Bike Tours . You'll cover 28 miles (remember, the bike is ELECTRIC), and you'll see parts of the countryside that are impossible to view from trains and even cars.

Travel Time : As little as 1h 20m

tour to countryside

Roughly 2 miles from the southern coast of England in East Sussex, you'll find the lovely historic town of Rye. With its cobblestone streets and old buildings, you could easily mistake it for the set of the BBC's latest period drama. In fact, it WAS actually the filming location for Mapp & Lucia – and there's a Mapp & Lucia tour for the die-hard fans.

Because Rye is very much a tourist town, you'll find loads to do. Shops and restaurants abound, and if you want to get your nature fix, you can walk down towards the coast and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve . It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest, offering important habitat for rare species like the Spangled Button Beatle – and a little sea air is always nice. It's a couple miles down to the actual coast, but there's loads of wetlands scenery along the way.

If you're a literary nut, be sure to get a look at the redbrick Lamb House – former home of authors Henry James and EF Benson. Fans of Harry Potter and other fantasy-oriented stories may enjoy The School of Wizards & Witches . It manages to be both fun and family-friendly at the same time.

Mermaid Street is a must-see part of any stroll through Rye, and you'll definitely want a camera handy. It's one of those classic British scenes, like Gold Hill in Shaftesbury or The Shambles in York.

Castle lovers won't want to miss Rye Castle . Though small, it's mighty – and mighty interesting. Along with a great history lesson, you can also check out some great views and a pretty little herb garden in an enclosed courtyard.

Travel Time : As little as 1h 9m

Brockenhurst

tour to countryside

With a population of roughly 3500, Brockenhurst is the largest village in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire. It's also a lovely place to spend a day (or a few of them, if you have the time). It's a great destination for active holidaymakers, with rambling, kayaking, and paddleboarding on offer nearby.

It's possible to have a lively time just walking around the village and browsing, but you may enjoy stopping in at The Beaulieu National Motor Museum , the Beaulieu Palace House , or the Beaulieu Abbey Church .

With an almost ridiculous wealth of local trails, you could easily walk until your feet were black and blue – but know that there are also plenty of great restaurants nearby, should you decide to take a break. We recommend Afternoon Tea at Careys Manor Hotel , a pub lunch at Hare and Hounds , or a light snack at The Bakehouse .

Travel Time : As little as 1h 33m

tour to countryside

Warwick is a large market town of roughly 31,000, and it makes for a great escape from the urban chaos of London. It's home to the impressive Warwick Castle , and situated along the beautiful River Avon.

For nature and scenery, check out Jephson Gardens , The Mill Garden , and Charlecote Park – or just take a walk along the river.  Or, if your countryside dreams involve cream teas and strolling independent shops, point yourself to the high street and just move in whatever direction feels right.

The Market Hall Museum is a great deal more interesting than it might at first sound, and Warwick Market is a fun browse if you're there on a Saturday.

If you're hungry, check out Thomas Oken Tea Rooms , Hatton Locks Cafe (great scenery), or The Tuckery . If you're looking for a chippy, try The Chip Shed .

Travel Time : As little as 1h 18m

Cookham

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvyXMK8BHqg/

Cookham is not the place to go if you want to browse endless shops, stately homes, and attractions. It's a small village along the River Thames with a population of around 5500. In 2011, it was named Britain's second richest village – and it's as lovely as you might expect, given that little bit of information.

The Cookham High Street has a few shops and pubs worth browsing, but the best part of visiting Cookham is just walking and soaking up the atmosphere. You can do the Cookham and Cock Marsh Walk for an easy 4-mile circular trip, or just wander Cookham Moor and watch the wildlife.

Art lovers will enjoy the Stanley Spencer Gallery on the high street, but there's not much else in terms of tourist attractions.

For tapas and traditional pub fare, check out The Old Swan Uppers or The Kings Arms . For something a bit more modern, check out Bel and the Dragon or Boulters Riverside Brasserie .

Travel Time : As little as 48m

tour to countryside

This western Wiltshire town has a population of roughly 17,000, but the quiet countryside is just steps away. If you're not up for a bit of walking, you can also grab a taxi at the station and head just out of town to Stourhead , a lovely National Trust property with a truly incredible 18th-century garden.

For more stately home and garden fun, visit Longleat House…and Safari Park . It's an unlikely combination, but there's no shortage of things to see and do. You could easily spend your entire day there. While the Safari Park portion of the estate is a drive-through experience, they do have a bus tour option.

The town itself isn't quite as charming as some of the others on the list (though please don't interpret that as a dig). It's lovely, and there's plenty of good food to be had, but it doesn't offer the same kind of wandering experience you might get in a place like Rye or Warwick or Moreton-in-Marsh.

Travel Time : As little as 1h 51m

tour to countryside

Though technically a cathedral city, Ely is a great place to wander around and soak up some of the lovely Cambridgeshire countryside. It definitely doesn't feel urban. Given that it's a cathedral city, there's a pretty good chance you'll at least give a few passing glances to Ely Cathedral . It's a lovely cathedral with a stained glass museum on an upper level, but be warned – there is a fee for admission.

For a simple, relaxing day, plan a walk around the town and along the canal, along with a simple pub lunch. We recommend The Hereward (great options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free) or The Cutter Inn .

If you're feeling adventurous, check out Truly Scrumptious Vegan Cafe . Their meals are animal-friendly, gluten-free, and surprisingly delicious. For a more traditional afternoon tea, cream tea, or sandwich, try Peacock's Tearoom – which also has vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options for those who want them.

Antique lovers will delight in the selection at Waterside Antiques , and nature lovers will enjoy Jubilee Gardens along the River Great Ouse.  If you'd like to get out on the water, try Liberty Belle Cruises .

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, london – landing in london.

London is a city that has captivated the imaginations of locals and visitors from around the world. The city brims with vibrant life at all times of day, from the teahouses to nightlife, parks to the river-walk along the cobble-paved banks of the River Thames. Castle towers and church spires create the historic skyline blending with the chic skyscrapers of the 20th and 21st-centuries. The exposed wooden beams of historic pubs harken back to the day Charles Dickens sat by the fire at The George Inn.

Haberdashers have small stores opening out to the cobblestone streets, almost hidden in a small alleyway. The designer allure of Harrods brims with polished tile and a contemporary style. When you arrive at the airport, your private transfer is waiting, ready to escort you to your hotel situated in the heart of the city. At the quarter hour, you can hear Big Ben chime along the River Thames, the Elizabeth Tower casting a shadow over the House of Parliament with neo-gothic design.

What's Included:

London – London Calling

In the morning, the city returns to vivacious life with people strolling along Oxford Street and enjoying the artisanal selections of Borough Market. The succulent aroma of freshly made English pies topped with apple, and the scent of caramelized sugar, drifts across the storefronts. Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby after breakfast, and you are ready to step out into the streets and discover the extent of the historic city.

Behind the neo-Gothic features of the House of Parliament stands the illustrious frame of Westminster Abbey. The abbey was established in the 10th-century, but was constructed in its current form in the 16th-century. The Western Façade is striking, with dramatic towers connected by a central nave, with a large, arched window bringing your eye to the center of the portico. The interior is even more extravagant, with polished tile floors checkered with black and white. The lofted ceilings create a cavernous effect.

The octagonal Chapter House was built under the patronage of Henry III and remains one of the oldest sections of the abbey. Black Purbeck marble structures the central pier, ascending upwards to form an umbrella shape above the surviving medieval tiles. The grandeur of the abbey offers a glimpse into the religious life of English royalty, from coronations to weddings, watched over by England’s historic poets and authors.

London – Beauty of Buckingham Palace

In the morning, the streets around Brick Lane Market fill with locals eager to discover antique splendor at Upmarket, or retro teahouse furniture along the main thoroughfare. After breakfast, your guide meets you at the hotel. You journey to Buckingham Palace eager to see the fabled opulence of the British monarchy. The 18th-century edifice became the official London home of the royal family in 1837. Two iconic royal guards flank the entrance behind the wrought iron gates, their bright red coats standing out against the cream-colored stone. When you enter the palace grounds, you find an opulence around every corner marked by gilt and color.

The palace contains 830,000 square feet of floor space. A lush rug covers the hardwood floor in the drawing room situated underneath sparkling chandeliers. A large oil painting decorates the wall between the polished decorative pillars. The exuberance of the room comes from the light reflecting off of the light-fixtures, mirrors, and gilded crown molding, with the colors of the antique furniture adding to the brilliance of the room. After your tour, your guide leads you to the entrance of the palace to witness the celebrated Changing of the Guards.

Stratford-upon-Avon – Sounds of Shakespeare

Today your guide leads you northbound to the charming Elizabethan town of Stratford-upon-Avon, home of the renowned poet and playwright William Shakespeare. The half-timber homes are colored with white and black facades. Thatched roofs top cottage homes. In spring and summer, flower pots dangle from gas lamps and radiate across the parks. The Bard was born in the Stratford in the 16th-century. The Tudor ambiance of the town is reflected in the décor, from medieval recreations to Shakespearean themed tea rooms.

After strolling along the charm of Stratford, you come to Shakespeare’s birthplace, a home where ardent fans have visited since the 19th-century, etching their names into the windows to show their support and passion for the language-changing writer. Inside the more modern façade, you find a house restored to the traditional Tudor rooms. A narrow bed stands next to a small hearth. The kitchen has pots and pans decorating layers of shelving. The low-lying wood beam ceiling leads to the open stairwell.

West of town is Mary Arden’s Farm, where genealogists have connected the farm back to the family tree through the Bard’s mother. You continue your exploration of the countryside outside of Shakespeare’s shadow, venturing into the rolling hills and cottage-clad villages of Cotswolds.

Bath – Historic Stones

After breakfast, your guide leads you into the English countryside. Fluffy sheep graze on the lush hills and grassland. The horizon has an endless fertility along the farmlands. In the distance, large, angular stones rise out of the prairie. You realize you have arrived at Stonehenge. The powerful stones stand at the center of a dense Neolithic and Bronze Age complex of monuments. A ring of standing stones surrounds a collection of interworked stones set in earthworks to keep their place. There is an undeniable mysticism to the site, emanating from the bluestones and vast prairie surrounding the ancient construction, which archeologists date back to as early as 3,000 BC.

A pathway frames the ring around the massive stones, providing a close view to the monoliths brought all the way from South Wales, a 250-mile journey. It is hard to imagine the Salisbury Plain covered by dense forest during the construction of the monument, and even harder to imagine how the architects and builders dragged the stones through the trees. The horseshoe inside the circle of stones aligns with the astronomical calendar, fitting the light of sunset into the stones during the midwinter solstice. The ethereal ambiance of Stonehenge stays with you, even after you leave the site behind for the Georgian architecture and Roman baths of the charming city of Bath.

Cambridge – Classic University

In the morning, the shops at Brixton Village open their doors. The old-fashioned confectioners at Sweet Tooth spill the scent of caramelized sugar and baking cupcakes into the arcade. After breakfast, you once again make your way outside of the city for the day, venturing northbound to the serene River Cam and stunning traditional architecture of Cambridge.

The countryside surrounding the university town adds to the exquisite character of architecture dating back to the 13th-century. The buildings seem unchanged from their original construction. In the spring and summer, flowers blossom in the parks and leaves reach down from their branches and brush the grass. In winter, fresh snow blankets the parks and lines the riverbanks.

Students bicycle along the paths and cobbled passageways creating a unique, radiant atmosphere exuding knowledge and history near locals floating down Cam River. Fitzwilliam Museum was the first public art museum in England, intended to house the treasures of the Viscount Fitzwilliam inside the neoclassical façade. The exuberant exterior matches the extravagant collection spanning Greek marble statues and Egyptian cartouches, a Roman funerary couch, and works by Leonardo da Vinci. The beauty of collected histories around the museum matches the artistic architecture around of town.

London – Taking Leisure in London

The morning light washes over Covent Gardens, where local students at the Royal Academy of Music perform inside the arcade, their voices accompanied by string instruments and echoing along the cobblestones and shops. After breakfast, the day is yours to enjoy the wonders of London at your own pace, taking in the high-paced energy around the Financial District or strolling through the blossoming daffodils and roses of Hyde Park. If the art of England and works collected by the British Empire inspire you, then you’ll find yourself at the National Gallery, one of the top art museums in the world, with paintings from around Europe dating between the 13th and 20th-centuries. The Doric columns of the entrance greet you upon your arrival and you step into the vast collection of around 2,300 displayed paintings, including the spectacular mosaic in the main vestibule.

In the East Wing, known for containing works from the 18th and 19th-centuries, you find Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. The displayed still life is Van Gogh’s fourth attempt at capturing the vivid colors and exquisite detail of the flowers. The yellow background makes the golden texture of the flowers step off the canvas. At first glance, the painting seems a simple representation of a vase and its contents. But the longer you look, the more detail you notice, filling every crevice, each collective petal, stem, flower, and decorating the entire canvas.

London – Exiting England

The weekend Camden Fashion Market erupts with chic London culture, collecting both the stylish trends and underground fads decorating shops windows. Lava lamps glow and skull rings refract light. Vinyl records spin on antique players. Vintage and antique create brand new styles across London, commemorating the city’s connection to its past, but always looking fashionably forward.

At breakfast, your sip a cup of freshly brewed black tea; the herbaceous aroma drifts from the warm mug. Your private transfer will soon meet you in the lobby and escort you to Heathrow International Airport. You have explored the majesty of past and present London, along with the charm of the encompassing countryside, but there is always more history to see and more of Britain to experience. If you are considering adding on to this vacation, you may find the England traveler reviews helpful for ideas.

Italian Countryside, 15 Prettiest Towns [Map, Pictures]

Welcome to the Italian countryside! Our travel guide is full of pictures of the prettiest towns and wine regions in the Italian countryside. Plus, affordable countryside stays, and restaurant recommendations.

Italian Countryside

One of the most amazing things about Italy is how diverse the natural beauty is in such a small country. Consider this. Italy’s total area is 116,350 square miles, smaller than the state of California at 163,696 square miles!

Given its relatively small size, it’s mind-blowing to think Italy has 4,700 miles of coastline. Three magnificent Mountain Ranges, The Italian Alps, The Dolomites, and The Apennines. 1,5000 clear mirror-like lakes. Many of them are world-famous. Lake Como, Maggiore, and Garda, to name a few. Let’s not forget Venice, Florence, and Rome, three of the most beautiful cities in the world.

In between all of Italy’s famous cities, beaches, mountains, and lakes beats the heart of Italy. The Italian countryside. The birthplace of la dolce vita.

We’re  Brandy Shearer  (Author) &  Paolo Ferraris  (Photographer), two budget-savvy Italian introverts, artists, and dual citizens living in the Italian Alps. We show you how to  avoid crowds  and  save on travel  by exploring  Italy in the off-season . From popular destinations to hidden gems, get a taste of la dolce vita in your inbox by subscribing below.

Italian Countryside Town Map

Our list of the prettiest Italian countryside towns is alphabetical. As my Mom said, she has no favorites!

Why subscribe to ALOR Italy? Two reasons. First, our list of the best countryside towns to visit in Italy will continue to grow. Secondly, we’re working on a list of stunning towns on the Italian coast! Hence we hope you’ll consider subscribing below.

15 Prettiest Italian Countryside Towns

Because we wanted to keep our list of the prettiest towns in the Italian countryside objective, we set the following criteria.

  • First, it must be a town or smaller, not a city .
  • Secondly, the town must have jaw-dropping Italian countryside views.
  • Next, acknowledgment among Italians.  Each town is either a UNESCO site, an “I Borghi più belli d’Italia” (one of Italy’s most beautiful villages), or a favorite vacation town among Italians.
  • Finally,  we have spent time in and love the town .   Back to Top.

As locals, we want to connect travelers to a less crowded, less touristy side of Italy. The Italy we love.

Asolo, Veneto (Artistic Charm in the Italian Countryside)

Asolo, Veneto, Italy Italian Countryside Gem

Nicknamed “The City of a Hundred Horizons,” Asolo is a small fortified town known for its spectacular mountain setting in the Veneto region. However, what lands Asolo on our list are the frescos decorated Venetian-style buildings that give it a fairytale atmosphere.

It all started in 1489 after the former Queen of Cypress, Caterina Cornaro, came to Asolo in exile. As a result of her opulent Renaissance court, the former Queen played a hand in establishing Asolo as a town rich in history, art, and culture.

Because it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, Asolo is a calm refuge of artistic beauty in the Italian countryside.

  • For the best views of the Italian countryside, visit the Civic Tower of Asolo.
  • For more information about Asolo visit the Official Tourism Board of Asolo, Italy

Assisi, Umbria (Italian Countryside Pilgrimage)

Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Italy

Italians have a deep affinity for patron St. Francis. Consequently, his birthplace  Assis, Italy  is the most beloved pilgrimage in Italy. Even if you don’t give a fig leaf about St. Francis, Assisi is worth visiting for its elevated views of the graceful Umbrian countryside. To get to the vista points seen in the photos above, follow the trail along the fortress walls of Rocca Maggiore Castle.

What’s more is that Assisi is full of Medieval masterpieces including the Basilica of San Francesco and paintings by Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, and Giotto. As a result, Assisi earned UNESCO status in 2000.

While over 5.5 million pilgrims, art lovers, and tourists journey to Assisi annually, it remains relatively uncrowded in winter. Hence Assisi earned a place in our hearts and on this list.

Bardonecchia, Piedmont (Italian Alps Countryside Town)

Snow on Ski Trails in Bardonecchia, Italy

Internationally Bardonecchia, Italy is most famous for being an Olympic Community during the 2006 Winter Games hosting the snowboard competitions and an Olympic village. However locally Bardonecchia is known as a countryside escape from the crowds of Torino.

This small town in the Italian Alps has around 3,000 full-time residents. Yet, during peak ski season Bardonecchia comfortably welcomes nearly 30,000 people eager to hit the slopes.

At the top of the town sits borgo vecchio (the old town) with charming wood and stone homes built in the 1300s. While the main street via Medial offers all the amenities of a larger city including restaurants, bars, boutiques, and gourmet shops. All with the Italian Alps as a backdrop.

Located in Susa Valley (Val di Susa) on the French border, Bardonecchia is an ideal base for exploring numerous surrounding Alpine resorts in both Italy and France.

For the best view of the Italian Alps countryside hike to Grange della Rho (elevation gain. 3,563 ft) or take the easy way up and ride the ski lift to Ristorante Pian Del Sole.  Back to Top .

Barolo, Piedmont (Regal Wine Country in Italy)

Barolo is an enchanting town in Italy’s most prominent UNESCO wine region, the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero, and Monferrato. Nothing feels as regal as spending a day in Barolo sipping Barolo, The King of Wine.

A gastronomic paradise, Barolo is rich in culinary tradition. For instance the lavish refinement of dishes topped with shaved truffles. Likewise, agnolotti del plin and tajarin al ragu are hearty pasta favorites from the region. What makes for the ultimate visit to Barolo? First, start with a wine tasting in one of the many tasting rooms in town. Then, meander cobblestone streets and enjoy Italian countryside views behind the ancient Castle of Barolo. Finally, indulge in a meal with panoramic vineyard views at  Locanda in Cannubi  our favorite restaurant in Barolo. Be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. Especially during truffle season in the fall.

Most importantly Barolo has all of the visual wine country magic of Chianti without the crowds.

Bosa, Sardinia (Lush & Colorful)

tour to countryside

Bosa, Sardinia is most famous for its production of high-quality leather and its colorful houses in the historic district of sa Costa. The homes look like a happy rainbow belt between the Temo River and the Serravalle hills. Bosa is more than just a picturesque village with several popular sights including 12th century Malaspina castle, The Conce Museum, frescoes in the Immacolata Concezione Cathedral, and paintings from 1370 inside the church of Nostra Signora de sos Regnos Altos. For the most breathtaking views of the Italian countryside hike to Malaspina castle.

Plus, Bosa is a 20-minute drive from four beaches. Consequently, it’s one of the few towns on our list with access to the sea and countryside views. Back to Top .

For more information about Bosa visit the Official Tourism Board of Bosa, Sardinia.

Cortona, Tuscany (Hidden Gem)

tour to countryside

Get ready to channel your inner Frances Mayes. Cortona is famous outside Italy as the setting in the film  Under the Tuscan Sun.  Although Cortona was the set of a now-famous movie, it remains relatively uncrowded by tourists. As a result, it is one of the best towns to enjoy a relaxing visit in the Tuscany countryside.

Without a doubt, Cortona is timeless. As a result, the past and present dovetail beautifully here. Hence  Michelin-recommended restaurants  thrive in a Medieval town perched on a hilltop between Tuscany and Umbria.

For the perfect day, start by exploring Piazza della Repubblica and nearby Piazza Signorelli, both in the historical heart of Cortona. Then, work up an appetite exploring Palazzo Casali, MAEC museum (Cortona’s Museum of the Etruscan Civilization), or the Diocesan Museum of Cortona in Piazza Duomo. Next, indulge in Tuscan cuisine at  Osteria del Teatro . Finally, hike up, up, up to the  Basilica di Santa Margherita  at the top of Cortona. To be sure this neo-gothic, Roman Catholic Basilica with a fourteenth-century soul and nineteenth-century style is a must-see. Finally above all, don’t miss the views from the hill just above the Basilica.

Gangi, Sicily (Darling Sicilian Countryside Town)

Pictures of Italy Gangi, Sicily

Gangi is a small town in Sicily known for its live nativity scene, stunning views of the Italian countryside, and being one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. Rich in history and local culture yet undiscovered by tourists the residents of Gangi live a slower lifestyle that, so many seek. At the same time, Gangi has much to offer visitors including Palazzo Sgadari, Santuario Dello Spirito Santo, Chiesa della Madonna della Catena, and at the top of the town a late medieval castle, originally the residence of the Ventimiglia family.

Work by local artists adorns the main streets of Gangi. As a result, visitors walk away feeling vested in the spirit of this beautiful town. For the best views of the Italian countryside find the terrace behind Saint Mary of Jesus Church (pictured above). Back to Top .

Marostica, Veneto (Chess Match With Living Pieces)

Marostica is famous for hosting a live chess match in the town square with living chess pieces! While chess fans might know Marostica, tourists have yet to catch on. As a result, Marostica is one of our favorite day trips to escape the crowds of Venice. Outside of live chess matches, a visit to Marositca is all about relaxing in a beautiful town.

For the perfect visit, start by ambling through crowd-free streets under charming portico-covered sidewalks. Then head to the Baroque-style Church of Madonna del Carmine up a beautiful 17th-century stairway for open views of the town below and old settlement above. Finally, visit the upper part of the walled city to the original settlement. Enter through the Porta Bassano gate and follow the Scaligeri walls to the Church of Carmini. Then take the path of Monte Pausolino to Castello Superior (the Upper Castle) which sits in the middle of a shady olive grove.

Neive, Piedmont (Charming Hidden Wine Country Town)

Castle Grinzave Cavour in Piedmont, northern Italy

Surrounded by UNESCO wine country, the hillside town of Neive delivers small-town charm amidst sophisticated refinement of the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero, and Monferrato.

Want to know what to do in one day in Neive? First, enjoy the countryside and take a Lily Tomlin-style photo on Big Bench Neive #23. Then make your way over to see the Castle of Grinzane Cavour. Later follow the signpost-lined paths through Barbaresco, Moscato, Barbera, and Dolcetto vineyard-lined hills below. Then work up an appetite by exploring the historic town center and tower Torre dell’Orologio. Finally, relax over a bottle of Dante Rivetti Nebbiolo at  Osteria l’Aromatario  (pictured above).

Orta San Giulio, Piedmont (Cinderella of the Northern Lakes)

Pictures of Italy Isola di San Giulio from Piazza Motta

While tourists continue to flock to larger more well-known Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, Italians quietly keep Lake Orta and its prettiest town Orta San Giulio their little secret. Because it is considered the most beautiful among the larger northern Italian lakes, Italians nicknamed Lake Orta La Cenerentola (Cinderella).

For the perfect day in San Giulio, start at the waterfront Villa Bossi Public Gardens. Then make your way to see the charming frescos of Palazzo della Comunità in Piazza Motta (pictured above). Next, take a ferry from the docks over to San Giulio island. An ‘island of silence’ Isola di San Giulio is home to a working monastery where visitors are welcome to enjoy a peaceful walk in the middle of the lake. After enjoy a local Cheese and Charcuterie board at  Al Boeuch . Finally, make the pilgrimage up the hill to  UNESCO World Heritage site Sacro Monte  to see the best lake views in all of Italy.

Pienza, Tuscany (Most Romantic Italian Countryside Town)

Pienza Italy Photos Piazza Pio II

Considered the capital of Pecorino cheese, Pienza is famous for being one of Tuscany’s most romantic hilltop towns, and because of its Pecorino! Nicknamed “the ideal city” Pienza is above all a Renaissance miracle of near-perfect town-planning earning it UNESCO World Heritage status. Romantics will adore Pienza’s cinematic appeal much as Zeffirelli did when he filmed much of “Romeo and Juliet” here.

Most importantly for Romeo and Juliet, fans check out our 20 Photos of Pienza , Italy post before visiting to be sure to see locations in the film. Finally, for the best views of the Tuscan countryside and Val d’Orcia valley below, walk the outer wall of the historic city. Back to Top .

Pitigliano, Tuscany (Historic Wonder)

Italy Pic of the Day Pitigliano Landscape

A uniquely beautiful town named Pitigliano is carved directly into the rocks on a cliff in Tuscany! Pitigliano is known as “Little Jerusalem” because the Jewish community that fled Rome found refuge and peaceful coexistence among Christians here.

There are three parallel streets that stretch from the main square of Piazza Garibaldi through Pitigliano. As a result, it’s easy to explore without a map or the worry of getting lost. To fully appreciate the town first, wander down any one of the alleys. Next, follow the stairways down to picturesque views of the Italian countryside. Finally, explore the history of Pitigliano in the ghetto and the recently restored synagogue.

The Tuff rocks of Pitigliano have a natural yellow hue. As a result, sunset is magic in Pitigliano. Head to Piazza Garibaldi as the sun starts to go down because above all seeing the Italian countryside framed by Medici Aqueduct at sunset will be a lasting memory.

San Leo, Emilia Romangna, Italy

San Leo Italy

In the Emilia Romagna region, San Leo is perched on a limestone edge above the countryside. It’s known for its beauty and thus has earned a spot on the Borghi più Belli d’Italia  list as well as  Orange Flag status .

Scicli, Sicily (Montalbano Fans Favorite Italian Town)

Scicli, Sicily

Montalbano fans, this one is for you! Scicli is a small town in Sicily famous for being the set of Inspector Montalbano based on novels by Andrea Camilleri. However, Scicli is really on our list of the prettiest countryside towns in Italy because of its UNESCO inclusion as one of eight  Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto in south-eastern Sicily .

As a result of its Baroque architecture, smooth white stone streets, and many churches it doesn’t take much planning to have the perfect day in Scicli. That said, above all don’t miss the views. First, find San Matteo church. Then look for the road behind it that goes up the hill to the Castle Of The Three Cantons (Castello Dei Tre Cantoni). After, sunset head to  Prosit Sicilian Bistro  for an excellent relaxed meal.

Urbino, Marche, Italy (Renaissance Beauty)

What makes Urbino particularly beautiful has a twist of irony to it. Despite being a small hilltop town,  Urbino is known as the “cradle of the Renaissance ” alongside Florence. Its Renaissance standing is owed to one man, the Duke of Urbino. The Duke, also known as Federico da Montefeltro, invited many scholars and artists to Urbino.

Unfortunately, after the death of the Duke, Urbino slid into a period of economic and cultural stagnation from the 16th century on. Here in lies the twist. That stagnation meant preservation for Urbino. It stands much the same today as it did over 500 years ago. Thus Urbino earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 and in our hearts as one of the prettiest towns in the Italian countryside.

Urbino, Marche Italy

What is the Countryside of Italy Called?

As dreaming of the Italian countryside turns to an online search, you might wonder what the countryside in Italy is called. It’s not that strange of a question because there are many different types of countryside in Italy, and Italians have a name for each.

In Italy, the Italian countryside is called “la campagna.” You’ll hear Italians say “vado in campagna.” Meaning “I’m going to the countryside” when refering to vacations. Meanwhile, the Italian countryside in the mountains is referred to as “la montagna” and the coastal countryside of Italy is referred to as “il mare.”

Of course, when tourist dream of visiting the Italian countryside they are most often imagining wine country. Here’s where things can get a little tricky. Each region has its own name too. Back to Top

Italian Wine Country

Just as there are 20 regions in Italy, there are 20 wine regions in Italy. In other words, there is no part of Italy without beautiful wine countryside views nearby. Believe it or not, there are even vineyards in the Italian Alps like  The ‘l Garbin farm in Chiomonte.

Nevertheless, if you are looking for the most beautiful wine regions in the Italian countryside for a vacation here are the three largest and most popular.

First, is Veneto.

Veneto Wine Region

Hogback Hills of Valdobbiadene in Veneto, Italy

The Veneto wine region is located in northeastern Italy between Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Veneto is the foremost wine-producing region in Italy accounting for roughly one-quarter of the total production in the country. It also happens to be one of the most beautiful. The rolling hills of the Valpolicella are famous for producing the complex, fruit-forward red wine known as  Amarone della Valpolicella.  Meanwhile, white wine lovers will want to gravitate toward the UNESCO World Heritage Hogback hills of Valdobbiadene for  S oave and Prosecco.  Back to Top

The second is Tuscany.

Tuscany Wine Region (the Chianti)

Views of Chianti Wine Country in Tuscany

The Tuscany wine region is located in central Italy between Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Umbria, and Lazio.

Although Tuscany ranks second in wine production in Italy, it’s arguably the most famous wine region in the Italian countryside. The Tuscany wine region is commonly called “the Chianti” because its primary varietal is Sangiovese, the primary grape used to make Chianti.

In fact, there’s little doubt the Chianti is one of the world’s most beloved wine regions thanks to a bucolic countryside patchwork of vineyards, agricultural fields, and Cypress trees. What’s more the surrounding cities of Florence, Siena, and Arezzo are also some of Italy’s most beautiful.  Back to Top

The third is our personal favorite, home to the “King of Wines” Piedmont.

Piedmont Wine Region

The Piedmont wine region is located in the northwest corner of Italy and includes areas like Erbaluce di Caluso, Valsusa, and Pinerolese. However, the most beautiful part is a UNESCO World Heritage site of five distinct wine-growing areas with outstanding landscapes collectively known as Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. This is where the “King of Wines” Barolo is produced making it one of the most important wine regions in Italy. Red wines from the region include Barolo, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbaresco, Moscato d’Asti and more. Arneis is the primary white wine from the region.

While the Piedmont region is known around the world for its wines, in Italy, it’s loved for its beauty. Looking across the Piedmont wine region is to see a kaleidoscope of hillside vineyard panoramas as far as the eye can see. Undoubtedly the charming villages, regal castles, and Romanesque churches that dot the landscape add to the charm of the region. The best part, Piedmont wine country is far less crowded and touristy than Tuscany!

8 Italian Countryside Stays

Our list of affordable Italian countryside stays consists of places we paid to stay. We don’t receive kickbacks for our recommendations or ask for free lodging. In order to be on our list of countryside stays in Italy, the places must exceed our expectations based on the price per night. They must also offer really cool views of the Italian countryside and the warm hospitality Italians are known for.

Each location mentioned below can also be found on our Italian countryside town map above.

Country House Ca’ Brunello in Urbino, Marche, Italy

If you’re looking for an affordable Italian countryside stay near Urbino, we cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our stay at  Country House Ca’ Brunello . The country house seen below has panoramic views of the Marche countryside. Plus, a fully equipped kitchen with an adorable SMEG fridge made me feel right at home. Best of all, our host thoughtfully included cookies and fruit for our stay. We found out later when we were invited into the host’s kitchen to chat over coffee that she makes all the sweets herself, and they are excellent.

Solo Affitti Brevi (Italian Alps Countryside Stay in Bardonecchia, Piedmont)

It’s true, Bardonecchia, Italy is our hometown. While it might seem biased to include it on a list of the best countryside towns in Italy, one visit will cement Bardonecchia in your heart too, promise. If we’re wrong we owe you fresh, warm krapfen (donuts) with cult-like status from award-winning Pasticceria Ugetti in Bardonecchia!

For stays in the Italian Alps, we book our family in apartments found on Solo Affetti Brevi. My Mother and Sister recently stayed for a week in Appartamento Treize and loved it. Weekly rates vary with the season, but a seven-night stay in October is just over €500.

In summary, while the boot print of Italy is small, the amount of natural beauty it holds is immense. No matter where you are in Italy, you’re at most two hours from a different and equally beautiful experience.

Imagine if you will living in (or visiting) Torino, Italy. Torino is less than an hour and a half from Milan, Le Langhe wine country, and the Italian Alps. Two hours from the coast of Liguria, and Lake Maggiore. Now imagine all the cute countryside towns in between. It’s no wonder Italy is one of the most popular destinations for travelers around the world!

Hello there! How are you doing Miz Brandy? Will you be updating soon? I’m trying to plan a trip to Eataly next May beginning in Lake Como and ending in June in Sicily. Your guides and tastes seem right in line with ours and are already proving useful. I think more accommodations need to be listed. What do you think of Perugia?

Hi Kay! I’m happy to say we love Perugia! It’s not on the list only because it’s large enough to be a city not a town. Here are some highlights https://artoflivingontheroad.com/2023/05/07/perugia-italy-pictures/

Sicily BTW is a must! We’re working in a guide to destinations in Sicily. What type of experience do you enjoy most (Culinary, coastal, countryside?) Happy to recommend a few ideas for you if you like!

You have the best guides for Italy! It’s clear you are so in love with the country!

Thank you! I really am in love with Italy. Had a crush on Italy for a decade and traveled all over before committing… now I think this one’s the last one! Can you imagine? As someone who moved around like I did for so many years I know what that kind of a question is all about, just like you do!

Great list, many of which I’ve visited

Thank you Sheree! Have others you’d recommend?

I have a long list but I’m not sure EH drank in them. Generally I love 5* hotel bars – who wouldn’t?

Hasbrouck House, New York

If New York City is called the city that never sleeps, then Hasbrouck House is the place to slow down and catch up on that beauty rest. This bucolic Hudson Valley countryside getaway couldn’t get more charming: suites are spread out between a stately 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion and its former carriage and stable houses, which all sit on 150 acres of land. Spend your days strolling the grounds, curling up with a good book on the bluestone patio, as well as tucking into farm-to-fork bites and local ciders at the on-site restaurant, Butterfield.

Brush Creek Ranch, Wyoming

Channel your inner John Wayne at this luxe dude ranch in Wyoming. Brush Creek sits on 30,000 private acres in Platte River Valley, overlooking the prairies and Rocky Mountains in the distance. Brush up on your cowboy skills by horseback riding on the 50 miles of equestrian trails, or try your hand at fly-fishing, archery and more. Prefer to be pampered? Head to the Trailhead Spa where treatments are given in teepees. When hunger strikes, you can indulge in a three-course dinner at the rustic-chic dining room, grab a drink at the saloon (which has Wild West-style swinging doors), or eat a gourmet campfire meal under the stars. As for your room: choose between a private log cabin or a room in the main Trailhead Lodge—done up with 28-foot ceilings and a roaring open fireplace to resemble the original 1884 homestead.

Travaasa Austin, Texas

Just 30 minutes outside Austin, the 210-acre Travaasa in the Balcones Canyonlands is a zen retreat with a Texan twist. Sure, you can detox with yoga classes, reiki sessions, and even life coaching, but we suggest you embrace the Lone Star style by signing up for one of the 40-plus activities, including mechanical bull riding lessons and hatchet throwing workshops. If you’d rather take it slow, start with the “heart starter” hike to Lake Travis, followed by a hands-on cooking demo, and ending the afternoon with a few laps in the infinity pool and a quick snooze in the poolside cabanas.

Twin Farms, Vermont

The all-inclusive Twin Farms resort takes countryside getaways to a different level. The 18th-century farmhouse was once the home of Nobel Prize winning novelist Sinclair Lewis; today, it’s been transformed into a five-star Relais & Châteaux stunner. Picture this: a Japanese bathhouse and 10 cozy cottages with wood-burning fireplaces and screened porches tucked away in the trees on 300 forested acres. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike or ski the hotel’s private slopes, canoe on Copper Pond, and even enjoy a personal champagne picnic in one of the shady meadows.

Immerse yourself in nature at Primland , a 12,000-acre escape in southern Virginia. Here, you can stay in an adults-only treehouse built high in the oaks or opt for a two-story cabin with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Blue Ridge Mountains. In case the view from the room is not enough, there’s also an onsite Observatory Dome for stargazing. During the daytime, you can go mountain bike on part of the Old Appalachian Trail, hit the links at the world-class golf course designed by Donald Steel, or bliss out with a Native American healing treatment at the 1,800-square-foot spa.

Calling all foodies: Blackberry Farm is for you. On 4,200 acres of farmland in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the property is a culinary destination in its own right. At its heart is The Barn, a multiple James Beard Award winner and one of the pioneers of the farm-to-table movement. The restaurant sources all the ingredients itself, with vegetables grown from its gardens, fresh milk and cheese from its livestock, and wild mushrooms and berries foraged from the surrounding area. As for booze, there’s a 160,000-bottle wine cellar as well as a lauded brewery, which even uses sour cherries and persimmons picked fresh for its beers. And if you want a personal tour, just ask the resident cheesemaker, chocolatier, or butcher to show you around behind-the-scenes.

Tuscany is easy to navigate by car, with just a few main road arteries connecting the region to major cities. You can reach Arezzo and Siena from Florence via the E35, and if you plan to drive to Lucca and Pisa, take the A11. This route takes you past Pistoia and Montecatini Terme – a famous spa town with mineral-rich waters. • Brunello Wine Tasting & Lunch In A Tuscan Castle From Montalcino
  • Cooking workshops in Arezzo
  • Wine tasting in Brunello
  • Walking tours of small and enhanced towns such as Arezzo , Cortona , Lucca

The Chianti E-Bike Tour from Siena will see a local guide lead you through stunning backroads in the Tuscan countryside. Alternatively, you can go the most old-school route on a Chianti Hillside Horseback Riding Tour from Siena . Riding through the rolling Tuscan hills on horseback is undoubtedly the most romantic way to experience them.

3. Volendam

Located along the shores of the Markemeer and Gouwzee Lakes (part of the Ijsselmeer Lake), Volendam is a postcard-perfect fishing village that offers a glimpse into traditional Dutch life. However, the main waterfront area is nowadays extremely touristy. It’s far from what it used to look like in the past, especially in the summer season.

Colorful wooden fishermen’s houses now serve as restaurants, souvenir stores, and photography shops where you can take pictures with traditional costumes. The best thing to do here is take a leisurely stroll along the dike and indulge in delicious fresh seafood.

There are tons of restaurants and street food stands in Volendam. Just keep an eye on the seagulls if you decide to eat outside or they’ll be gone with your herring or shrimp sandwich before you know it… This almost happened to my friend, but luckily her reaction was quick.

If you have more time, check out Volendams Museum, 5 minutes walk from the dike. It’s a good place to learn more about what life was like in this area in the past and see traditional Dutch clothing.

For a unique experience, take a cruise on Gouwzee Lake or hop on a ferry to the island of Marken (more info about Marken further below).

TIP: You can also rent a bike and explore more of the countryside around Volendam. Most bike rentals provide you with a suggested route itinerary, and if you have a couple of hours, you can easily visit Edam and Marken (more information on both places further below).

Volendam - the most popular place to visit on Dutch countryside tours

Practical Info & Tips for Visiting Volendam

Distance from Amsterdam: 20km/ 25-40 minutes drive.

How to get there from Amsterdam : By bus #316 (+-30 minutes), by bike (1-1.5 hours), or with guided tours.

Recommended tours: Most tours that visit Volendam, also visit Zaanse Schans and several other popular places like Edam and Marken. See here for the full selection. If you also want to see Giethoorn (further away), check out this highly-rated tour .

TIP: Simonehoeve on the outskirts of Volendam organizes cheesemaking and clogmaking workshops and also has traditional costumes for photos. Many tours that come to Volendam also stop here for a short clogmaking demonstration and cheese tasting. If you come from Amsterdam by public bus, there is a bus stop right at the farm. In that case, you may want to book one of their experiences in advance.

Fisherman statue in Volendam, The Netherlands

The picturesque island of Marken sits in the middle of the lake not far from Volendam. In the past, the island could only be reached by boat. Nowadays, there is a road that connects Marken to the mainland, but the nicest way to arrive is by ferry from Volendam .

This traditional fishing village with its green and black wooden houses and quaint streets exudes an old-world charm. It is the most picturesque and authentic-feeling place that you can visit in the countryside near Amsterdam. Marken is incredibly charming!

Just keep in mind that the island is not a museum and people actually live here, so be respectful of private property. Needless to say that this counts for all the other places too.

The best way to explore the island is on foot or by bike. You can also visit the tiny Marken Museum, where you can learn about the island’s history and discover its unique cultural heritage. In the village, you’ll also find a place where you can see clogmaking demonstrations.

There are also a couple of nice restaurants and cafes where you can have lunch.

Marken island - most beautiful places in the Dutch countryside

Practical Info & Tips for Visiting Marken

Distance from Amsterdam: 22 km/ 30 minutes drive.

How to get there: You can reach Marken by bus, but we recommend going to Volendam first (see above) and then taking a ferry . You can also rent a bike in Volendam and explore this beautiful area by bike.

Recommended tours: Most tours that go to Zaanse Schans and Volendam also visit Marken, but it’s not always the case. This is the most popular day tour and this private tour also takes a ferry ride to Marken (in season). Here you can find an overview of all Dutch countryside tours that include Marken in their itinerary.

Marken village in the Netherlands

Best known for its homonymous cheese, the town of Edam is located just north of Volendam. The two villages are literally adjacent and the distance between the centers is just 3 km (2 miles). You could even walk from Volendam to Edam, but it’s much faster and more convenient by bike (about 10 minutes).

Edam is very small and you can walk through the entire center in 10-15 minutes. Its narrow streets and picturesque canals are surrounded by beautifully preserved traditional architecture and a visit here gives you a good idea of what a typical town in the Dutch countryside looks like.

Edam also has several museums. The best one to visit is Edams Museum and it’s quite different from the ones in Volendam or Marken. To start with, it’s set inside an old house dating from the Dutch Golden Age, with many artifacts and paintings from that period. The floating cellar is really unique and it’s worth coming here even just for that.

Edam Cheese Museum is a much more touristy experience but can be nice if you like to learn more about the town and its cheese.

TIP: The highlight of a visit to Edam is undoubtedly its weekly Cheese Market, where you can witness the age-old tradition of weighing and trading cheese wheels. This market takes place on Wednesday mornings in July and August. You can find more info here .

However, the market is small and not nearly as impressive as the famous Alkmaar Cheese Market , so don’t change all your plans just for this. But if you are visiting the Netherlands in the summer and are planning a day trip to the countryside, you can as well come here on Wednesday. It will definitely make your visit more special (but it will also be a lot busier than otherwise).

Traditional Edam cheese in Edam town near Amsterdam

Practical Info & Tips for Visiting Edam

Distance from Amsterdam: 20 km/ 30 minutes drive.

How to get there: By bus #314 (+-30 minutes), by bike (1.5 hours), or with guided tours. If you rent a bike in Volendam, Edam is a must-see!

Recommended tours: Most tours that visit Volendam also visit Edam. See here for the full selection.

Edam - one of the nicest villages in the countryside near Amsterdam

Now that we covered the most famous and most popular places in the Amsterdam countryside, let’s take a look at a couple of smaller and less-known villages that are also worth considering.

If you want to see the more authentic side of the countryside in the Netherlands without busloads of tourists, then you may want to check these out as well.

6. Broek in Waterland

Nestled just a few kilometers north of Amsterdam, Broek in Waterland is a hidden gem in Amsterdam’s countryside.

It’s a charming village with well-preserved traditional houses, set against a backdrop of scenic canals, bridges, and historical farms.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Broek was a thriving trading center focused on grain imports from the Baltic Sea region, herring fishing, and whaling. Nowadays, it’s a small sleepy village with a tranquil atmosphere that offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.

Practical Info & Tips for Visiting Broek

Distance from Amsterdam: 10km/ 15-20 minutes drive.

How to get there: By bus #316 or #314, by bike (30-40 minutes), or with a guided Amsterdam countryside bike tour.

Recommended tours: The best way to visit Broek is with this bike tour (it also visits more places in the Amsterdam countryside). Here you can find an overview of tours that visit this picturesque village.

Broek in Waterland village in Amsterdam countryside (Holland)

7. Monnickendam

Located just 5 km northeast of Broek and 6 km south of Volendam, you’ll find Monnickendam, a picturesque fishermen’s town on the shores of Gouwzee. This is another charming place to visit in the Amsterdam countryside.

Monnickendam has a beautiful Marina and several small beaches and is popular with the locals. It really comes to life on sunny weekends in the summer.

Practical Info & Tips for Visiting Monnickendam

Distance from Amsterdam: 14 km, 20 minutes drive.

How to get there: By bus #316 or #314, by bike (45 minutes from Amsterdam or 25 minutes from Volendam).

Recommended tours: Just a few tours include Monnickendam in their itinerary (see here ). The best way to visit is by renting a bike or an e-scooter from Volendam .

Map of the Best Places in Amsterdam’s Countryside

Here is the map indicating all the places mentioned in this guide. As you can see, most of them are located really close to Amsterdam.

Once again, there are many other charming areas in the countryside all over the Netherlands. But if you simply want to see some Dutch windmills and charming traditional villages, then you’ll find plenty of choices close to Amsterdam.

Further below, you can find our hand-picked recommendations for the best tours to the Dutch countryside from Amsterdam. Read on!

How to use this map:  Use your computer mouse (or fingers) to zoom in or out. Click on the icons to get more information about each place. Click the arrow on the top left corner for the index. Click the star next to the map’s title to add it to your Google Maps account. To view the saved map on your smartphone or PC, open Google Maps, click the menu and go to ‘Your Places’/’Maps’. Best Amsterdam Countryside Tours

If you wonder how to see as many of the nicest places in the shortest time possible, we recommend the following countryside tours from Amsterdam:

  • 5.5 hours tour – this is the most popular half-day tour that visits 3 of the best places in the countryside near Amsterdam. You can choose a morning or an afternoon tour which makes it very easy to add this to any itinerary.
  • 6.5 hours tour – this is the shortest ‘complete’ Amsterdam countryside tour . It leaves the city early in the morning and gets back before 3 pm, allowing you to quickly see 4 top places and make the most of your day. Plus, you can upgrade this tour with a 1-hour canal cruise in Amsterdam.
  • 8 hours tour – this is the most popular Dutch countryside tour. It visits the same places as the tour mentioned above, but you have more time to explore deeper. Because it leaves later and lasts longer, you’ll need to foresee the entire day for this tour.
  • 8 hours private tour – the most popular and best-rated private tour . It covers all the best places but in a more special way. For example, in the summer, this itinerary also includes a short boat trip.
  • 9 hours early spring tour – this is one of the best countryside tours if you are visiting during the tulip season and only have time to do one excursion outside Amsterdam.
  • 4-5 hours bike tours . Bike tours are great if you have little time and/or want to visit less touristy places in the countryside. Most of these tours bring you to the Waterland District just north of Amsterdam, including Broek. You also pass a traditional windmill, and some tours also include cheese tasting or other experiences.

A Serene Stop in Zaanse Schans

Your memorable day trip to the Dutch countryside begins bright and early, at 8 am, near the Central Station. Here, you’ll meet your fellow group members and friendly guide, board a comfortable bus, and set off to our first stop, Zaanse Schans. The journey itself is a treat, offering glimpses of the serene and lush countryside that the Netherlands is renowned for.

Once in Zaanse Schans, you’ll find yourself transported back to the Dutch Golden Age. As you wander through this enchanting village, you'll be greeted by well-preserved windmills and traditional Dutch houses, perfect for capturing your quintessential Dutch photos. Along the way, your guide will point out easy-to-miss details and share insights into traditional Dutch life and culture.

An Enchanting Stroll through Edam

Back on the bus, your journey continues to Edam, a town steeped in history and unparalleled charm. It's here that the world-famous Edam cheese originated, and you’ll walk the same streets that were once bustling with traders from all over the world, eager to get their hands on the famous cheese. Stop by a square where the iconic Cheese Market used to take place, and while the hustle and bustle of traders may have dwindled, there’s no doubt if you look close, you’ll see hints of its previous life.

Cheese and Craftsmanship in Volendam

The next leg of your trip features a visit to the picturesque fishing village of Volendam. With its winding streets and traditional Dutch houses, this coastal gem has long been a beacon for artists drawn to its vibrant atmosphere and captivating seascapes.

Here, you’ll be welcomed to a local cheese producer, where none other than a cheese master will explain the art of crafting Gouda and Edam cheeses and treat you to an exclusive cheese-tasting session. That’s not all this enchanting Dutch town has to offer, though. While in Volendam, you’ll also have the chance to step into a traditional clog factory to learn about the intricate process behind the creation of these Dutch shoes.

A Glimpse of the Past in Marken

The final destination on your delightful journey through the Dutch countryside is the idyllic village of Marken. Known for its traditional fishermen houses, peaceful harbor, and Protestant church, Marken seems to have frozen in time, offering a snapshot of the 17th-century Dutch way of life.

Afterward, it’s time to return to Amsterdam. Expect to arrive back around 2:30 pm, which gives you the rest of your afternoon and evening free to relax or discover more of the lively city’s charm.

I've Traveled Alone to 65 Countries – Here Are My Top 5 Destinations for Flying Solo

Where to find adventure, group activities, affordable luxury hotels, and total relaxation as a solo traveler.

Katie Jackson/Travel + Leisure

Lewis may have needed Clark, but for most trips, I think it’s OK to be a party of one. In fact, my favorite style of travel, # solotravel , is now trending on TikTok and in real life. But if there’s anything I’ve learned from adventuring alone in 65 countries, it’s this: some countries cater to lone wolves better than others. Whether you’re looking to lay on the beach, climb a volcano, or explore the big city, here are my top five destinations for flying solo.

Giacomo Augugliaro/Getty Images

Western Europe’s most affordable country, Portugal has been my second home since 2016. Whether in Alentejo or the Algarve, I can always find a €2 glass of wine and five-star hotels, including IHG’s new Vignette Collection properties in Porto and Lisbon , for under €200 per night. It’s the fifth safest country in Europe, according to the Institute for Economics & Peace 2023 Global Peace Index (for comparison, Spain ranked 23rd and France 34th) and is home to the world’s largest standing wave. Since surfing solo is dangerous, I go with Onda Pura . In Lisbon , visit the Oceanário , voted the world’s best aquarium . Alone, you can linger at exhibits for as long as you want. I’ve traveled the country by train and bus, but I recommend renting a car for as little as €25 per day. Pro tip: Learn how to drive manual first.

South Africa

Katie Jackson/Travel + Leisure

While it’s not the safest country on the Mother Continent, ranking 32nd in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Global Peace Index , South Africa is the easiest for Americans to visit. United Airlines offers nonstop service from multiple U.S. cities to Cape Town, English is widely spoken, and there are restaurants catering to every diet. I use Facebook to join group hikes and dinners and Airbnb to book guided, local experiences. I recommend doing the “From Prisoner to President Tour” hosted by Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and friend, Christo Brand . To visit the wineries, take the Franschhoek Tram . I’ve also enjoyed solo safaris. Alone, you can choose your start time (I hate waking up at 5:30 a.m. for game drives), and you always have the best seat. During low season, some lodges waive the single supplement. Year-round, the new Loapi Tented Camp only charges solo travelers 62% of what it would charge a couple. For travel within the country, book a package with a company like Kensington Tours ; it includes all transfers.

Since I lived in Nicaragua, I have an impressive collection of passport stamps from Costa Rica . It’s the safest place in Central America , and it offers everything from volcano trekking to beach hopping on two incredible coastlines. I want to check out the new SP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge , which hosts wellness retreats and is part of the Red Sofia Program (designed to make travel safer for single women). Meanwhile, in Monteverde, solo travelers can’t go wrong at Hotel Belmar where you don’t have to venture off site for adventure (book the canopy immersion and coffee tasting). For an all-inclusive, I recommend Secrets Papagayo .  It’s not the place to stay if you don't want to be around couples, but it’s adults-only and hosts theme nights, beach games, and cocktail parties where singles can mingle.

FilippoBacci/Getty Images

Good news! You don’t need to be with a romantic partner to visit the Maldives . I solo-mooned there and had a blast falling back in love with me, myself, and I. Highlights include visiting Coco Palm Dhuni Kohlu’s turtle rescue center , reading by my plunge pool (“Eat, Pray, Love” is a must for solo travelers), and when I wanted company, hitting up the beach barbecues. You also don’t have to be a millionaire. The island of Maafushi caters to backpackers, and even at a resort, I stayed under $350 per day. Have a bigger budget? Consider booking the Gili Solo Experience . Boasting an underwater suite and restaurant, the Conrad Maldives is also on my list. For flights, try Emirates ; round-trip fares from New York's JFK to Malé start at $1,265.

Not having anyone to split expenses with, domestic travel is cheapest. I explore my backyard in Montana where I staycate at Lone Mountain Ranch . With its queen bed, the Meadowlark Cabin is ideal for one, and the group activities offer opportunities to socialize. For an urban escape, I prefer New York City , where I stay at NH Collection New York Madison Avenue . Its lobby has a community table, fireplaces, and live jazz most nights. Since there’s no shame in doing the Great White Way without a date, I went to see “ The Notebook ” in April. Finding one center orchestra seat is easier than finding seats together. For getting around, use the MTA’s new OMNY credit/debit card tap program ; it’s the best value.

Commuter town with ‘beautiful countryside’ and cheap rent named most affordable

From the daily rat race to the insurmountable rent prices, London isn’t always an easy city to exist in.

There’s an alternative to this often-hellish existence – and that’s joining the commuter life , with your takeaway coffee , packed lunches and train reading (or laptop) at the ready.

The cost of living might be rising across the UK, but there are a bunch of commuter towns that have cheaper rent than the averages in London (which, according to figures from Zoopla , has reached £2,121) and aren’t too far away by train.

So, if you’re tempted to pack up your troubles and head off for a quieter existence while maintaining your London wage, consider venturing to a town with ‘beautiful countryside’ right on the doorstep: Rugby.

Tucked away in Warwickshire, the quaint market town of Rugby has a population of around 78,000. And with an average monthly rent price of £889, it’s much cheaper than London: it’s also only around 57 minutes from London on the train, with single ticket prices starting at around £9.

And, it seems local love living there. ‘You definitely get more bang for your buck here,’ wrote one commenter on Martin Lewis’ MSE forum . ‘You don’t have to travel far to get to some nicer places, great transport links, only ever a short drive away from nice country walks, farm shops etc.’ And a Mumsnet user added that it’s a ‘lovely place to bring kids up.’

With monthly searches for ‘low-cost apartments near me’ up by 300% year-on-year, new data from London Northwestern Railway has revealed six of the most affordable commuter destinations that workers in the London area should know about.

After Rugby came the nearby Coventry, where the average rent comes in at £926. Here, a train into London takes around 1 hour 20 minutes – AKA, the time it roughly takes to commute from some areas of south London to north. It’s all about perspective.

The third was Northampton, which is slightly more expensive with an average rent of £946 but is only 50 minutes away.

Next came Long Bucky, located midway between Northampton and Rugby, which has the same average rent price as Northampton at £946, but is slightly further away at 1 hour 8 minutes by public transport. Here, the housing options are varied, from period properties to new builds.

And in fifth and sixth place ranked Leighton Buzzard and Watford, which had rent averages of £1,090 and £1,161 and commutes of 30 minutes and 16 minutes respectively – the closest to London of the entire list, but the most expensive.

Things to do in Rugby

A highly sought-after market town, Rugby is packed with independent retailers, bars and restaurants, and even has a weekly market selling fresh local produce.

There’s also plenty to be found just outside of Rugby, including a breathtaking 630-acre reservoir in the form of Draycote Water. With bike and walking trails, a water sports centre, bird-watching hides and a trout fishery, the reservoir, built in 1970, supplies water to both Rugby and Coventry.

For another experience steeped in nature, there’s the Swift Valley Nature Reserve, a peaceful park with various mashes, landscaped wetlands, and meadows filled with water lilies and dragonflies.

Inevitably, the sport of rugby has a considerable presence locally, and a trip to The Webb Ellis Rugby Museum is essential for fans.

Found less than 100 metres from where the first rugby match began, it documents over 180 years of the game, including the story of how the ball transformed from an inflated pig bladder to the modern, oval-shaped object we know and love today.

For a spot of art and culture, a trip to the Rugby Art Gallery & Museum is a must, a modern art museum that delves into Rugby’s Roman history across rotating exhibitions and numerous exhibits.

And if you’ve got little ones, the Rainsbrook Valley Railway opens on the third Sunday of every month for free railway rides along the 1 km-long track. Toot toot!
