Best Caribbean shore excursions

Melinda Crow

Whether your ideal cruise vacation involves lounging, exploring or learning something new, there's a Caribbean shore excursion designed to help you find your bliss. In a year-round destination like the Caribbean, most of the fun revolves around sun, sand and sea. History, culture and food also top the lists of excursions available in the region.

You may be surprised by how many Caribbean islands have interesting geological features not found anywhere else in the world. Shore excursions offer plenty of adventurous ways to explore these areas, from caves to volcanoes.

In our quest for the best Caribbean shore excursions, our goal was not to find the most popular tours, but to find the experiences and attractions that make a destination stand out. Let's jump in with a look at our favorite tours.

Best Eastern Caribbean shore excursions

Virgin gorda and the baths, tortola.

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

You'll have the opportunity to visit many gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean, but The Baths is about as unique as they come in terms of pure scenic beauty. The beach features giant boulders and stone formations that create hidden pocket beaches and spots where the sand and water rush in and out. It's part of the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands. To get there, you'll take a 45-minute boat ride from Tortola to nearby Virgin Gorda.

  • 4 1/2 hours, challenging, $$$.

Bioluminescent Kayak Adventure, Puerto Rico

This excursion out of San Juan starts at dusk and finishes well after dark. You'll travel by van to the eastern edge of the island to a beach near a bioluminescent bay. You'll get brief kayaking instructions, life vests and lights before setting off through the mangroves and into a small, sheltered bay. Every stroke of your oars sets off sparks of light in the water as you stir the tiny glowing organisms.

Even with availability limited to cruises that stay in port overnight in San Juan or pre- or post-cruise stays, this excursion made our list because it is simply not something you can do in very many places in the world. Kayaking in the mangroves in the dark was one of the coolest things I've ever done, and the bioluminescence was an incredible extra bonus.

  • Six hours, moderate, $$$.

America's Cup 12-Meter Regatta, St. Maarten

Are you up for a yacht race? You don't need any experience sailing to participate. You can simply go along for the ride, or with some instruction, help sail the boat as you race to the finish. It's possible to hop on a sailboat and cruise around sipping fruity drinks on any island in the Caribbean. What you cannot do everywhere is help sail the boat or participate in a race. St. Maarten is known for sailing -- why not join the fun?

  • 2 1/2 hours, challenging, $$$.

National Park Snorkeling Excursion to St. John, St. Thomas

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

This excursion simplifies the complicated process of getting from the cruise pier on St. Thomas to the island of St. John, home of Virgin Islands National Park. You'll get to see a bit of St. Thomas on the way to the boat dock, then enjoy a beautiful boat ride before your snorkeling begins. This is the spot for some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean because the park encompasses over 18,000 acres of submerged land that include 45 species of hard coral, 400 species of reef-associated fish and 17 documented species of whales and dolphins.

  • 3 1/2 hours, easy to moderate, $$.

Monserrat Volcano Flightseeing, Antigua

Helicopter flightseeing is a popular shore excursion in other destinations, but it's not something you'll find in most of the Caribbean. This flight offers the opportunity to see a still-active volcano from the air, as well as experience the beauty of the islands from a unique perspective. There's also the possibility of seeing sea life like whales, dolphins and turtles from the air as you fly between the islands.

  • Two hours, easy, $$$$$.

Best Western Caribbean shore excursions

Blue hole and konoko falls, jamaica.

Waterfall excursions are a big deal in Jamaica, with multiple excursions featuring the often overcrowded Dunn's River Falls. This tour from Ocho Rios takes you off the beaten path to two slightly less crowded sets of falls. Blue Hole is an idyllic waterfall-fed swimming hole, where the more daring can jump from heights into the pool below. Konoko Falls is located within a botanical garden featuring parrots, crocodiles and tropical birds found on the island. Here, you can climb to the top of the falls for a better look and enjoy a swim in natural pools.

  • 4 1/2 hours, moderate, $$$.

Flavors of Jamaica

Jerk chicken is one of the best-known dishes of the Caribbean. Finding an excursion that allows you to experience it firsthand with a cooking class that teaches you about the flavors and culture of Jamaica is possible in most Jamaican ports. Most tours have you cooking your own lunch under the tutelage of a Jamaican chef. In Ocho Rios, a visit to a Jamaican estate house is a bonus.

  • Three hours, easy, $$$.

Xocolatl — The Chocolate Experience, Roatan

You may think you know chocolate, but Mayan chocolate is a palate pleaser not well known around the globe. This excursion from Roatan, Honduras, allows you to learn and taste how chocolate fits into the Mayan culture. Part cultural education, part Honduran traditional lunch, this tour is a delightful option for Roatan cruisers eager to skip the sun and sand to experience a local meal.

  • Three hours, easy, $$.

Cave Tubing, Belize

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

Cave tubing is the only super popular excursion that made the list. Cave tubing is famous in Belize, and we didn't want you to miss out. The drive through the jungle to get to the caves is half the fun of the excursion. Upon arrival, and after a safety briefing, you'll quickly get cool and wet floating through a tunnel of limestone. You'll want a waterproof camera for this one.

  • 5 1/2 hours, moderate, $$.

Discover Scuba Diving From Shore, Grand Cayman

If you've ever thought of learning to scuba dive, a Discover Scuba course is the way to try it without taking hours of classes or investing loads of money. If you are going to try it, you might as well try it in one of the best diving locations on the planet. Plus, doing it from shore is less intimidating than trying it for the first time from a boat.

Several dive operators set up shop right at the shore within walking distance of the tender docks. You can make your own arrangements with the dive shops in advance to participate in a Discover Scuba class or sign up for a ship's excursion if there is one. You'll learn the basics of breathing through a regulator, then enjoy a guided dive around the reef just offshore. (The reason ships anchor offshore at Grand Cayman.)

Save a Sea Turtle Experience, Cozumel

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

Most cruisers park their sunscreened bodies on a towel in the sand at one of the many beaches in Cozumel, Mexico, but you do have other options. Why not do something as cool as participating in a sea turtle hatching?

When sea turtles hatch, not all of them make it out of the nest and into the sea. This educational excursion allows you to give a helping hand to the little guys that didn't make it out. Under the careful watch of experts, you'll dig in the sand at already-hatched nesting areas looking for hatchlings that can either be helped into the ocean or retrieved and raised in a sanctuary until they are strong enough to be released. Bonus: Tiny baby sea turtles are adorable.

  • Four hours, moderate, $$$.

Best Southern Caribbean shore excursions

Whale and dolphin safari, dominica.

There is exactly one place on the planet with a known resident pod of nonmigrating sperm whales, and it's off the shores of Dominica. Come see them on a guide boat licensed to seek out both whales and dolphins; sperm whales aren't the only cetaceans that pass through this area. As with any whale watching, there aren't any guarantees, but this tour puts you in the right place for sightings.

  • 3 1/2 hours, easy, $$.

Cave Snorkeling, Bonaire

Bonaire has dozens of accessible caves, some filled with actively growing stalactites and stalagmites. Most cruise excursions will take you to at least two of them. These tours are not for the faint of heart.

Climbing into the caves is the hardest part. Some involve ladders; others are more challenging, requiring you to don a climbing harness and pick your way down a rock wall with the help of an expert guide.

Once inside the cave, snorkeling allows you to experience the incredible clarity of the water that has filtered through rock crevices to form pools. You may need to take a brief swim through a passage leading to another room in the cavern. If you're up for it, you'll return to the ship with a remarkable story. This is near the top of the list of amazing things I have done.

  • Three hours, challenging, $$.

Sky Canopy and Aerial Tram, St. Lucia

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

Many islands offer adventure courses, but the geography of St. Lucia gives it the unique ability to offer a true treetop zip line experience among the island's mountain peaks. Start by taking a gondola ride into the mountains, ending near the first zip line tower. The lines are interspersed with rope bridges, making the whole course an adventure. Bonus: There's a cold beer waiting for you at the cantina when you finish.

  • 4 1/2-5 hours, moderate, $$$.

Pilot Your Own Boat and Snorkeling Tour, Grenada

Totally different from a personal watercraft, these little two-person inflatable motorboats (picture miniature Zodiacs) are crazy fun to drive. The snorkeling part of the excursion lets you explore one of the world's best underwater sculpture parks. The excursion is fun and lets you get wet, while leaving you plenty of time to shop or explore the port.

Half-Day Land Rover Safari, Aruba

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

Some of Aruba's best sites require a 4x4 to get there. The Land Rover option is a bit more comfortable than the ATVs many people choose. You'll visit the famous California Lighthouse and the more picturesque side of the island. On most of these excursions, you'll end up at a beach, so wear your swimsuit and bring a towel.

4x4 Adventure and Harrison's Cave Exploration, Barbados

If you want to get out of the city and see Barbados in its rawest form, this 4x4 adventure is a superb option. You'll enjoy a forest drive, featuring scenic overlooks and a view of the pounding Atlantic Ocean (and the rock formations it creates) where it meets the Caribbean on the eastern side of Barbados before enjoying a motorized tram ride through Harrison's Cave. The active cave (meaning it has water flowing through it) has a great hall with a ceiling height of almost 50 feet.

Bottom line

Shore excursions in the Caribbean give you the opportunity to explore beyond the pier or even the city where your ship docks. Whether you crave water sports, wildlife or a taste of local food, you can easily find an activity to enhance your time ashore. When your ship stays in port all day, as they often do in the Caribbean, half-day excursions leave you plenty of time for those other cruise basics, like shopping, lounging on the beach and kicking back with a tropical drink.

Deceptive advertising by Royal Caribbean

I am a platinum member of RCI but they have lost my business. Their advertising and promotions are so deceptive. The pricing online says one thing and then the cost is vastly more expensive (not due to taxes and port charges) than advertised. Calling does not help since one is given multiple bs reasons for why the promotional price does not come even close to matching the actual cost.

Never Again

I am diamond level. While on my recent Navigator cruise the crew interaction was extremely good after that everything fell apart. Reduced cabin service, almost non existent cabin amenities, terrible windjammer cuisine, poor main dining food, repetitive breakfast menu, etc. This is probably my last RCL cruise. Customers deserve the old RCL service level which had been excellent.

My family vacation is ruined

Booked for 5 person family cruise and paid in full. I was owed a 500 dollar credit from a previous booking. When I did not receive it I called it in. I was told that they would adjust the booking so that I would get the credit issued back to me. The 500 was sent back but somehow my son was dropped from the reservation came to find out. The cruise is now 2 weeks away and the only option I am being given is to book yet another room for almost 4000 dollars. I understand that mistakes happen but I should not have to pay for them. I even offered to pay for the room at the rate I paid in December. My family vacation is basically ruined. Thanks Royal Caribbean.

R.C. Will not hold up to their side of bargain …

Royal carribbean told me that payment was due 2 months after booking, it is policy to email you to remind you that even though they have your credit card info they need you to call and authorize payment. I didn’t call assuming they would email to remind me or that they would just charge my card. They cancelled on us and didn’t bother telling us either, right before we are about to go to California to get on the cruise I find out that they cancelled on us. They then refused to give me the deposit back, which I would agree if I called and cancelled but they canceled on us with no email or anything. They are not a professional company in the least bit. I’ve read many other stories of that happening on the BBB website and others. So basically the way they make money is making it so you have to call them to verify you can charge the card, if you don’t they silent hoping you forget then sell the room to others and keep your money. Please don’t use Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is really going down…

Royal Caribbean is really going down the drain with customer service and customer satisfaction !! I had planned a second cruise this time with my kids two so I reserved two rooms and chose guaranteed balcony because their prices are so crazy now to pick our own room so I notice they recently changed our destination and I called to see if they can at least make it up to us and at least assigned our rooms due to the changes :( they not only said no but told me it says in the contract they can change any time and told me if I wanted assigned room it be 700 more on top of our 3k trip and 900 more on top of our second reservation! They just want to suck all our hard working blood next time we will sail a different company that cares more about the satisfaction of their guest that is willing to go more above and beyond ! Second sailing with them in one year and last one for sure!! They are not vacation dream makers they are just a business that's that!!!

Stores are selling fake goods

First and foremost, their stores are a complete sham. We were lied to about the duties which isn't the worst part. I bought what was supposed to be a Rolex. It stopped working the first evening. I tried to return it but was told they can't do returns on board, which was also a lie. After I tried to return it, it was only then that they have me the certificate, which clearly says it has non Rolex parts, so it isn't a real Rolex. I'm in the process of trying to return it but it's quite possible I'll be out of pocket at least $1200 for the duties. Royal Caribbean isn't helping whatsoever. As far as the rest of the cruise experience, it was just ok. Paid for a private cabana on their island. The service was a joke. The drinks from the bars were only mixed about half of the time and sometimes has the wrong alcohol in them. PLUS it's all auto tipping, which isn't acceptable. Their getting 18% regardless of if they screwed up my drink or took 45 minutes to bring it. What a joke.

Rcl beverage rip off

I've a Rcl cruise next year. Have been keeping an eye on beverage packages. Top price for US based customers for the deluxe is $90. In the UK top price is £85. A difference of over £12 per customer per day. 10 day cruise =£240 more expensive for UK customers. Recent promotion was buy one second one 50%.US customers got for $67/£53. UK customers £63.A difference of £100/ per person for 10 days.So £200 per couple. Contacted Rcl who stated "market forces" for differences but refused to match US customers prices.I'm crown and anchor member but makes no difference. Seriously thinking about cancelling, nevertheless last time I'll use Rcl. Seems like discrimination and they are giving preferential treatment for US customers.

Unprecedented Disappointment and Financial Loss with Royal Caribbean

I am utterly dismayed and angered by my recent experience with Royal Caribbean. After having £6000 for a cruise for a family of four, the company cancelled the trip and also nullified my future cruise credits accumulated from previous journeys. Four months have now elapsed since the cancellation, and I am still battling to secure a refund. The absence of transparency and accountability in handling this matter is unacceptable for a company of Royal Caribbean's repute. Long enough has passed. To make matters worse, their customer service has been virtually non-existent. Attempts to reach out for assistance or any form of communication have been met with either silence or responses that are dismissive and rude. This experience has not only caused significant financial strain but has also eroded any trust I had in Royal Caribbean. They have shown a complete disregard for customer satisfaction and financial ethics. I strongly advise potential customers to consider lack of customer care and accountability before booking with Royal Caribbean.

2days after getting off the allure of the seas with a zero balance ,royal deducted a hold off almost three hundred dollars on my debit card leaving me in a negative balance. This set off a chain of events that left me broke, temporarily homeless and caused me to miss a costly chemotherapy session(liver and correctal cancer)which puts me in a a very precarious health and mental condition. Post cruise cust mer services were cold and oblivious to situation. No help what so ever was given!!

Our first cruise with Royal

Our first cruise with Royal. We were on the odyssey mid April. Waitstaff and Porters were amazing. Co co cay was our favorite day on the 8 day cruise. Let’s be real though we are floating on an ocean with all kinds of amenities so I always find my self impressed by this in general. One: I had read a review suggesting food on Norwegian was better. I was skeptical It was true but I would have to agree with it. True enough that it effected me daily. My un-picky husband even commented. Dining room meals were great but If I found myself in the windjammer Buffett I would walk around struggling to find something to eat. Little things like no butter, dried rolls, dry donuts, yucky container ranch, dry rice and under ripe fruit just added up. Two: I gave the review a 3 because most of the typical cruising things were good. This however was enough that I’m not sure if I will do Royal again. It just made me angry. And I haven’t experienced this ever this bad on a cruise. My husband and I love the “game shows” and entertainment but they were so crude by the end I quit going. I’m no prude, hell I have 6 brothers and I have heard some junk but there are limits. Like one game show the couples had to audition in front of an audience to get on it. The tasked asked by the cruise staff was to re-create their most passionate kiss. So some guy laid his wife on the stage and spread her legs and stuck his face there and stayed there. No matter how you slice it, both my husband and I felt bad for this guys wife, who essentially just had her husband lay her on a theater stage and pretend to give her oral sex in front of an audience. This earned them a spot in the game show. My first thought was “hell this is how Carnival rolls,” I didn’t pay significantly more for zero cruising behavior standards from staff. During a majority rule game show people were leaving after staff read cruisers submitted answers to questions like “most used pick up line”. Staff was great but no shows game shows and a less than great Buffett may stop me.

After we disembarked and got back to the airport following our cruise, my wife realized she left her wallet and wedding rings inside the locked safe in our stateroom. We immediately called RC and were told we would not be allowed back on the ship and needed to fill out a lost and found report online. I'll spare you the details, but within 5 days, and after a brief communication mix-up, I was contacted by the Executive Office of RC and our valuables were on their way back to us. I would like to thank Executive Mr. Geno Bell-Floyd and Royal Caribbean for their professionalism, integrity, and trustworthiness and for how this situation was handled.

Disgusted never again

I have just returned from my cruise to find that they have taken twice the amount of costs incurred (taken over £1300 for a bill of only approx. £700). they now state that the difference will be repaid in 7/10 working days. They are 'stealing' over £700 for 7/10 days, they must be making millions from these underhand transactions? Paid over £7000 for our cruise, once paid it is IMPOSSIBLE to get ANY information out of ANYONE at Royal Caribbean. Sent over 2 dozen requests by e-mail and on their website not had a single response. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY.

Date of experience : April 02, 2024

There is a list, despite being fresh out of drydock there were many restrooms not operational, at times including the one in our stateroom. Our bed was extremely uncomfortable. The WiFi was incredibly spotty and in our stateroom dropped connection regularly. Many of the representatives were on the boat were very new and did not know how to answer questions, many with a severe language barrier. We went to our meal time at the main dining room and was turned away rudely by the maitre d. Then directed to go into the main dinning through another door which we were then also denied. Room service delivering the wrong food. Soda machines being sparsely located throughout the ship. Getting stuck in one of the centrum elevators for a short time. Called guest services about needing some personal towels to be laundered and they stated they were sending someone, no one ever showed up. However, I want to highlight our Wait Staff in main dining assigned to our table, RAJ was AWESOME (who also called our room to check on us as we missed a few nights due to reservations on board). Additionally our help in purchasing some LV from the store was met with a representative who I did not get her name was so helpful and courteous and patient. The manicure tech for my wife was also amazing, she stated it was the best manicure ever and she gets them regularly from very competent techs. The couples massage was great as well! The guys at the Cafe were always helpful. Beyond that it was a bit tough to get through, like a charge being added to our account from Shore side, without any communication or notification or explanation. $518 which then when billed to our BoA Royal card caused it to be locked due to fraud concerns from BoA. Then dealing with customer service rep Yooka who did attempt to take care of us and did not have the authority to fix anything at first was awful but got better with our second discussion and she really did try the next go round to help. I want to highlight the positives to show that it had its moments but the negatives way out weighed the positives and the financial issue that occurred supposedly in December to never get resolved prior to sailing is crappy to not use the profane word I would like to. We were amidst the Next Cruise and considering another with Royal 2 days in for it to become glaringly obvious we would never be back. I was told I would not be allowed to leave unless I paid, and I would be locked on board the ship. We are not on cruises often so likely no one cares but we have the financial capability of being a very desired customer but we will look to other cruise lines to find our home as we near retirement my wife wants 2 cruises every year of our retirement. I plan to make that happen for her but it will not be on Royal.

Would just like my money back!!!

When planning a trip and purchasing insurance for this trip with the cruise line; we was told that if we could not go for any reason due to illness our money would be refunded to us. Well a few weeks prior to the cruise my husband's Parkinson's began to cause some problems with his legs really bad and he felt that it would be wise not to take the trip at this time. We contacted the trip planner, who in turn gave us the numbers to call and cancel our trip. Not once has anyone from the Cruise line called to ask if there was something they could do to help. Never asking if we would like to reschedule the trip. We are still trying to get our money back as it seems unlikely a cruise is in our future, because of my husbands' health.

I went through a horrible divorce after 33 year marriage. I had two trips planned with my husband I had to cancel. I asked to move the trips to another time. They said they were keeping my deposit and will not work with me. The one trip was 4 months before setting sail. I gave them plenty of notice. As a business owner myself I would have never treated a customer like this. I am a major gambler too and always spend a lot in their casinos. I will not be going back to Royal Caribbean. Shame on them.

If you struggle with mental illness, please reach out to me before you go or save yourself the trauma and DONT GO!

If I could give my experience with Royal Caribbean 0 stars I would. I would like to share what I experienced and went through in hopes that I can save someone from trauma and raise awareness for the horrible actions that went on. I also would like to raise awareness for mental health disorders. Because of a mental disorder, I was confined into a room with everything I had, including my prescription medication taken away from me. I had 0 rights. Ship doctor was one of the most heartless and disrespectful human beings. Prisoners get more hours of sunlight that I was allowed. All employees gave different responses and it was clear there was lack of communication. Every action done by staffing was traumatic and contradictory of what should have been done. I will be writing my story to raise awareness of this issue. Please if you have a mental disorder DO NOT GO! If you would like more information or to discuss please reach out or comment.

Worlds worst cruise company

With royal caribean do not even bother booking an itinerary as they plan whichever places they want to stop off at themselves, so if you have planned and are looking forward to going to stop off at any specific destinations you better pray to god that the royal Caribbean decides they feel like stoping off there. Could not recommend people not to choose this cruise line any more, I always make sure i let others know by word of mouth whenever they ask about my experience with this cruise line just how terrible it is. Just a heads up the cruise director of the brilliance of the seas Brian is apart of the abcd+ community and not to mention he is very aggressive and violent for an abcd+ person and just in general as a human being, i feel this sets a terrible reputation for the abcd+ community. Brian should be sent to anger management, I witnessed him telling a customer on the brilliance of the seas cruise that he was going to punch them. WTH, so unprofessional, shocking, disgusting, absolutely without a doubt appalling behaviour. Stateroom assistant Perci and waiters Ezeikeiel and Johnson on brilliance of the seas deserve a pay rise but other than them most of the staff are irritating and are apart of the abcd+ community which explains their irritating personalities. The behaviour of the ship “captain” of brilliance of the seas was very disgusting, he treated me with the utmost disrespect and it’s honestly disappointing, the service of Royal Caribbean staff is shockingly appalling, seems as if they were trained to give customers an experience that guarantee they never book another trip with their company. Royal Caribbean has definitely steered me away from ever choosing to book the USA for a holiday. Book with them for the WORST experience of your life.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

royal caribbean cruise excursions reviews

A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.

The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.

Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.

“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.

The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.

Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.

“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.

Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.

According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”

Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.

The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.

After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”
