‘Deeply frustrated’: Popular beach to remain closed following ‘defects’

A popular beach shuttered for more than two years will remain closed as contractors undertake urgent remedial works at their “own cost”.

Monday, September 2 | Top stories | From the Newsroom

The reopening of a popular beach on Sydney Harbour has been delayed again due to building “defects”, more than two years after it was closed to the public.

Shark Beach at Nielsen Park was closed by the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service in early 2022 after its 100-year-old seawall was damaged in a storm six years earlier.

Despite reconstruction work initially projected to be completed later that year, NSWPWS revealed in an update last month that completion was delayed until October.

The agency said “construction complexities” and the need for remedial works to be undertaken at the contractors’ own expense had caused the delay.

“At the start of August, the contractor commenced execution of the grit-blasted finishes to the bleachers, mid-level terrace and promenade slabs,” NSWPWS said.

“As part of this process, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the project landscape architect identified that some remedial patching of concrete surfaces is necessary to rectify defects in the finish.

“This work is now under way, will be completed by the contractor at their own cost, and does not affect the integrity of the seawall structure but will require additional time to complete.”

With NSW Public Works closely monitoring progress at the site, NSWPWS said completion of the project was now due to take place in late October.

The long-awaited reopening has been delayed several times since work began in 2022, with NSWPWS stating earlier this year that it would wrap up in June.

Among the reasons for the delays have been adverse weather, the removal of 3600 tonnes of asbestos and termination of the original contractor.

In a statement, Liberal member for Vaucluse Kellie Sloane said she was “deeply frustrated” by the delay and had been briefed by the state government.

“Our community has missed two summers of swimming and was looking forward to the reopening in September,” Ms Sloane said.

“While this (delay) is disappointing, I have been advised that the delay will be weeks and not months.

“The reason for this is due to the need to rectify some defects in the finish of the concrete on the promenade.

“I will continue to keep you updated and will remain a thorn in the side of the contractors until we can all swim again at Shark Beach.”

NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe told ABC the project had taken too long, and she too was eager for the beach to be reopened for swimming.

“This is a project I have inherited and it has taken too long. I have asked the department to fix it as soon as possible,” Ms Sharpe told the national broadcaster.

The first thing about any Level 42 concert you will remember is the loud and exciting intro, each tour it changes and is always a variation of the Thunderbirds theme, the band arrive on stage with Mark Kings Bass guitar shining its lights into the audience.

Now, be prepared for some banging Brit Funk Pop musical majesty. The setlist these days is a mixture of their well known chart hits, some 80s album tracks and some very early stuff, there is usually a surprise in the middle of the concert – last time it was an accoustic set, in 2014 we can expect some new stuff from the Sirens album also.

Usually with fantastic graphics, a L42 concert never leaves you short-changed with fantastic tight musicianship from the band, Mike Lindups keyboard skills are as good as any i have heard, Pete Ray Biggin is shaping up to become a world class drummer, with Kings Brother Nathan on lead guitar and sax man Sean Freeman, the band give value for money and always get the venue up on their feet dancing and applauding. Also Mark's humorous interludes make you feel welcome and comfortable.

They usually tour every other October, the next one in 2014, and play medium sized venues 2-4000 seaters, also regulars at The Albert Hall, The IndigO2, and summer festivals all over Europe. Go see em, you won't be disappointed.

Well what can I say, as always absolutely awesome and feeling totally entertained. The Blow Monkeys were great and setting it up nicely. Mr Mark King as always sounding amazing, crowd luvving it. I love the way that they all look like they have fun on stage. By the end I was on my feet clapping, dancing and singing along, absolutely roasting, no voice and sore hands, but all so worth it. Hearing everyone leaving saying how awesome it was. See u in 2 years boys for more fun.

level 42 australian tour

At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. By the end of the ’80s, however, the band — whose music was instantly recognizable from Mark King’s thumb-slap bass technique and associate member Wally Badarou’s synthesizer flourishes — had crossed over to the point where they were often classified as sophisti-pop and dance-rock, equally likely to be placed in the context of Sade and the Style Council as was any group that made polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock. The band’s commercial peak came with 1985’s World Machine, but they continued to record and tour sporadically throughout the ’90s and 2000s.

UK 80’s funk rock icons Level 42 announce first ever Australia & New Zealand tour

18 February 2020 The Rockpit

Level 42

UK 80’s funk-rock icons, Level 42 will be touring Australia and NZ for the first time ever this May!

Level 42 left their mark on the 80’s with a polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock sound largely defined by lead singer / bassist Mark King’s thumb-slap bass technique.

Catchy hits such as ‘Lessons In Love’, ‘Running In The Family’ and ‘Something About You’ crossed the band from their jazz-funk fusion roots firmly into the mainstream pop charts and gave them a fanbase worldwide.

To date Mark King and the band have released 14 studio albums, 7 live albums, and 6 compilation albums, had 18 top 40 singles, selling in excess of 30 million albums worldwide!

As a live act Level 42 have primarily toured the UK (they sold out London’s Wembley Arena for a total of 21 nights over their career), Scandinavia and continental Europe, and have had a number of forays into the North American market on arena tours with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Steve Winwood.

Why they never made it to Australia has King scratching his head, but he is rapt the opportunity is finally here 40 years into his career! “Touring with the band this year has been about as much fun as I can remember having had on the road, and If you had asked me back in 1980 if I thought we would be selling out theatres around the world when I was sixty years old I probably would have laughed! Re-invention can be a wonderful thing!”

Level 42 have proven to be one of the most successful and enduring British bands of the 1980’s, and with the recent re-issues of the bands vast catalogue on Universal Music, and the ‘Collected’ series on CD and Vinyl, it is clear they continue to be a benchmark for British Jazz Funk at the highest level.

Why they never made it down-under for concerts has Mark King scratching his head, but he is rapt the opportunity is finally here 40 years into his career, “Touring with the band this year has been about as much fun as I can remember having had on the road, and If you had asked me back in 1980 if I thought we would be selling out theatres around the world when I was sixty years old I probably would have laughed! Re-invention can be a wonderful thing!”

At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. The band’s commercial peak came with 1985’s World Machine. Starting out as ‘The Early Tapes’ on the Isle of Wight in 1979, the band featured Mark King (bass, vocals) and Mike Lindup (keyboards) who are both still in the band today, along with brothers Phil Gould (drums) and Boon Gould (guitar). Before they released their first single, “Love Meeting Love,” as the band were initially an instrumental act, they were pushed to add vocals to their music in order to give it a more commercial sound. Mark King became the lead singer. Level 42 had several minor hit singles before 1984’s “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)” hit the British Top Ten. Released in late 1985, World Machine broke the band worldwide; “Lessons in Love” hit number one in Britain and “Something About You” hit number seven in America. Their next two records, Running in the Family (1987) and Staring at the Sun (1988), were a big success in the U.K., yet made little headway in the U.S. Both of the Gould brothers left the band in late 1987; they were replaced by guitarist Alan Murphy and drummer Gary Husband. Murphy died of an AIDS-related illness in 1989; he was replaced by the renowned fusion guitarist Alan Holdsworth for 1991’s Guaranteed. The band followed Guaranteed in 1995 with Forever Now.

Throughout the remainder of the ‘90s and the 2000s, the band’s line-up fluctuated, with King the lone constant and his brother, guitarist Nathan King, onboard since 2001. In 2010, the band celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special tour, as well as a box set, Living It Up, which included a disc of fresh acoustic versions recorded by Mark King and Lindup. 2010 also saw Husband leave the band once again, replaced by Pete Ray Biggin. The group continued to tour over the next few years before releasing new material in 2013, in the form of the EP Sirens. Supporting the release with an extensive tour of the U.K. and Europe, the group also recorded the live release The Sirens Tour, at their stop in London in 2015. The band continued to tour into 2016 with performances at festivals across Europe and South America. 2019 proved to be another very busy year for Level 42 with the guys playing 20 festivals from Quebec to Russia, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, and the UK.

2020 will see the From Eternity To Here Tour as the guys take to the road with a string of festivals and concerts worldwide. A Royal Albert Hall date awaits them in the middle of an extensive UK tour in October / November.
