  • Basic Information

A UAE residence visa grants an individual the legal right to live, work, invest and access many government services and financial facilities in the country. However, it must be cancelled officially if you plan to leave the country permanently. Here is everything you need to know about the UAE visa cancellation process.

HOW CAN A COMPANY APPLY FOR THE UAE RESIDENCE VISA CANCELLATION?

If your sponsor is a company, they must first apply for the cancellation of your labour card and contract at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). Your signature is mandatory on this application. Once they get a response from MOHRE, they can apply for visa cancellation via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP).

Your company must cancel your work permit as well. However, this can’t be done without a letter signed by you stating that you have received your dues, gratuity, repatriation expenses and other benefits that you and your company agreed upon.

Cancelling UAE residence visa online

The UAE visa cancellation process takes around 48 hours. However, there may be exceptions depending on public holidays or employer terms.

The validity of the visa depends upon its type and sponsor. If you hold a residence visa, refer to the Dubai visa status check by passport number to confirm its validity.

If you have a UAE residence visa and have been outside the country for more than six months, your visa will be cancelled. In this case, you cannot enter the country with your residence visa and will have to either get a visit visa or visa-on-arrival, depending on your nationality and country of residence.

However, if you’re employed by a company in the UAE and leave without resigning and following procedures, you risk being reported as an absconding person. This can lead to a travel ban, meaning you will be unable to enter the UAE and risk being arrested upon entry.

You must also pay off any loans, bills and other liabilities before leaving, as not doing these can risk legal consequences. We recommend following this procedure and collecting your visa cancellation proof (a stamp or paper) before leaving the UAE.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY EMIRATES ID WHEN THE RESIDENCE IS CANCELLED?

Previously, one could keep their Emirates ID even after cancelling UAE Residence. However, you will be asked to submit your Emirates ID to the GDRFA after cancelling your UAE Residence now. You must also submit your Emirates ID if switching jobs and changing your sponsor.

Note that after cancelling your UAE residence visa, your employer will be covering your medical insurance for the duration of the grace period. Since medical insurance is mandatory for living in the UAE, this will usually be active throughout your grace period.

Yes, you can, given that you follow all the protocols for a Dubai tourist visa extension .

CAN I CANCEL MY UAE RESIDENCE VISA IF I’M OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY?

If you’re on an employment visa, contact your employers and request they cancel it. Talk to them about any liabilities or penalties, if applicable, make sure they cancel your residence. If your employer refuses to cancel your residence visa, contact the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) to resolve the issue.

Please note that if you work for a freezone company in the UAE, both employer and employee must meet at the company’s headquarters to terminate the contract. For this, you should carry your passport and Emirates ID and get your UAE residence cancelled.

If you want to cancel a family member’s visa (dependent visa), you can easily do so without needing them in the country. All you need is a copy of the passport, Emirates ID, and the application typed out. You can do this from one of the typing centres in Dubai, and it will cost you AED 266, along with additional typing charges.

DO I HAVE TO EXIT THE UAE TO EXTEND MY STAY AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD?

After your UAE residence visa has been cancelled, you do not have to leave the country to extend your stay. You can apply for a tourist visa while in the country and pay the required charges (depending on the days you intend to stay).

That brings an end to our guide on the UAE visa cancellation process. Make sure to learn the latest guidelines for residency visas in the UAE before making any final decision. It is possible to cancel your UAE prepaid visit visa , which costs approximately AED 150. This can be done by contacting the government agency through which you applied for the visa.

To cancel your tourist/visit visa, your sponsor must request that it be cancelled and pay the cancellation fee. A few of the reasons you might need to cancel a UAE tourist, visit, or leisure visa are:

  • You realize that you need to stay longer than the duration of the visit visa you applied for.
  • Your company or spouse/family is applying for a resident permit for you (In this situation, it becomes mandatory to cancel the visit or tourist visa by paying the fee or else your residence permit can get rejected.)

Inside uae:.

If you have already entered the UAE with your tourist visa and are seeking employment here, you need to cancel your UAE tourist/visit visa and convert it into a residency visa. Since you have already utilized certain days of the visa, you will have to proceed with a status change from your tourist/visit visa to an employment/residency visa. This can be done while you are inside the country without the need to exit UAE.

Outside UAE

Individuals outside of the UAE don't need to apply for a visa change. Instead, they have to contact their visa provider, like Arabiers , to contact the sponsor to approve the visa cancellation.

To proceed with a visa cancellation, the following documents are required:

  • Applicant’s original passport
  • Sponsor’s original Emirati Identity Card
  • Fully-filled cancellation form with sponsor's signature

The UAE inside-country visa change without exit is one of the most convenient visa change or renewal options available for individuals in the UAE. If you wish to perform a status change, an inside-country visa with a status change option will suit you.

To confirm if your visa has been canceled you can follow these steps:

  • 01   Visit the  ICA website
  • 02   Click on the ‘Passport information’ button.
  • 03   Click on your visa type
  • 04   Fill up your passport expiry date and passport number.

Select your nationality from the drop-down menu on the right. Upon doing so a matching number will appear on the left-hand side box.

Complete the Captcha verification and clic on the ‘search’ button. The results page will display your visa information and the visa expiry date.

You can approach the immigration authorities for it in person or receive it through your employer or service provider. Even though it's not necessary to process a new visa, your new employer might ask for this cancellation paper to process your visa.

Then, for offline verification, it will give you your passport number. Furthermore, the service will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they will be able to give you information on any issue related to your visa.

Implications and consequences of UAE visa cancellation

Once you have canceled the visa, there will be a grace period and you will have to leave the country instantly. In addition, other factors can help you with the cancellation of the visa as you will see below:

Impact on Residency status and legal stay in the UAE

The option of visa cancellation status is easier for those who quit their job or want to find another one. Likewise, for those who want to move outside the Emirates and cancel their resident visa or those who send family members to the country of origin for studies or other reasons. In this way, after the cancellation, they will be able to obtain a tourist or visit visa with or without departure.

On the other hand, when the grace period for the canceled visa expires, choose to stay in the emirate or visit it again. Currently, they will allow you to be in the Emirates 30 after the cancellation of your employment visa. Similarly, these days will begin when the cancellation you requested is approved. Also, you will be able to see your visa expiration date on an application letter.

Furthermore, remember that if you stay in the emirate longer than allowed, you will pay a fine.

Return to the country of origin

Returning to your home country is the most common way to apply for the United Arab Emirates tourist visit visa. Therefore, you will need 2 to 3 days to have a new visa. Also, you can visit your family or enjoy a vacation while the tourist visa is being issued.

At this point, you will need to purchase the 3-way, fictitious return and return tickets which will need to include a flight out of the UAE. Additionally, your plane ticket must have dates after 30 or 90 days.

Visa processing

Generally, citizens of Western and European countries will have tourist visas upon arrival in the UAE. Likewise, as soon as your residence visa is cancelled, you can apply for a visa to Oman while you wait. Thus, then, you can obtain a tourist visa for 30 to 90 days depending on your nationality and the list of nationalities.

Visa change from airport to airport

The so-called change of lives between airports is convenient and useful so that you can leave and obtain a new tourist visa. Additionally, the visa provider can give you a return ticket to any nearby Middle Eastern country. Likewise, when you return to the UAE you will receive the new tourist visa.

Moreover, this is the best way you will be able to erase the time you spent and the status of the previous residential visa, pay the fine, and leave the country. Finally, you will be able to return with a new tourist visa and you will be able to continue enjoying the cities of the Emirates that you want.

Financial considerations and establishment obligations

Knowing the Dubai visa cancellation status, you wait for the grace period to modify the status and obtain another visa or leave the country. Likewise, the grace period is 38 days and fines will not apply during this time of the canceled visa. However, if you exceed this time, you will have to pay the fines as follows:

  • For the first day, it will be AED 125
  • For each additional day, you will pay AED 25
  • After 6 months the fine per additional day will be AED 50
  • And for 1 year of excessive stay, you will pay per day. AED 100

Similarly, if you apply for a new visa without leaving the emirate, you will not pay the AED 125 for the first days. Otherwise, according to the immigration system, before changing status, you will have to pay the fine,

Hand over the UAE ID card

When you have a visa cancellation, you must submit your UAE identification card. Likewise, you will have to bring it in person to the nearest GDRFA offices. You must know that if you change jobs and do not cancel the visa, you will have to hand over the UAE ID card.

Medical insurance after visa cancellation

For people who live and work in the Emirates, health insurance is of vital importance. Similarly, this insurance will be provided by your sponsor as required by the laws of the Emirates. Additionally, upon canceling the visa, the employer will continue coverage for the 30-day grace period. However, when health insurance is renewed early, it will not cover you for this period.

Also, check the conditions of your health insurance. Thus, do this before canceling the visa so that you have a guarantee for the time you are still in the emirate.

Re-application and visa options after cancellation

Visa Cancellation

Below you will see the recap and the visa options you will have after your visa cancellation:

The Visa of the internal country

The visa from the previous country will allow you to stay in the country after the cancellation of the family and work visa. Likewise, the previous visa will be a visa change that will allow you to remain in your residence. Additionally, your provider can take care of the procedures and give you a copy of the visa and a document certifying your status.

Avoid automatic cancellation of your UAE visa

Ways in which you can avoid canceling your Emirati visa automatically are:

  • Stay outside the emirate for 6 continuous months so that the visa is not canceled.
  • To avoid cancellation of your visa if you travel continuously, you will have to make frequent visits. Also, in each visit, there must be a time difference of 6 months
  • Check UAE visa cancellation status.
  • Check UAE Residency Visa Status

In conclusion, visa cancellation is a simple process that can be done online or in person. Furthermore, in many cases, it is the employer who will have to take care of all the procedures. Likewise, inform the sponsor or specific entity in advance of your intention to cancel the Emirati visa.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a popular destination for tourists, professionals, and expatriates. With its diverse culture and rapid growth, the UAE offers numerous opportunities for individuals from around the world. However, there may come a time when you need to cancel your UAE visa, whether it be for personal reasons or due to changing circumstances. This comprehensive guide will outline the process and requirements for cancelling your UAE visa, including work permits and residence visas, as well as provide essential information on costs and timelines.

How to Cancel a UAE Visa in 2024

Cancelling a UAE visa in 2024 is a straightforward process, but it is essential to follow the appropriate steps and ensure all requirements are met. The cancellation process may vary slightly depending on the type of visa, but the general steps are as follows:

  • Obtain a visa cancellation application form from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or download it from their website. In Dubai, visit an AMER center to cancel your visa. Important! If you live in the UAE with your family and sponsor their Family visas, you need to cancel the Family visas first and then apply for the cancellation of your own visa.
  • Complete the form with accurate information and attach the required documents.
  • Submit the completed form and supporting documents to the GDRFA or a registered typing center. In Dubai, it is an AMER center. Note that visas must always be cancelled at the same location where they were initially issued.
  • Pay the visa cancellation fee which is around AED 500.
  • Wait for the Visa Cancellation Paper sent to your email, which is typically issued within a few days. After receiving it, you have 28 days to either change your visa or depart the country. If needed, this period can be extended up to 60 days.

The required documents for visa cancellation may vary depending on the type of visa and your specific situation. Generally, the following documents are required:

  • Completed visa cancellation application form
  • Original Emirates ID
  • Original passport and a copy
  • Original visa or a copy
  • Clearance letter from the MOHRE (for work permit and work visa cancellation)
  • Sponsor's passport copy (for dependent family members)

If you hold a UAE work permit and work visa and wish to cancel it, the process involves coordination between you, your employer, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). To cancel your work permit and work visa, follow these steps:

  • Notify your employer of your intention to cancel the work permit and work visa.
  • Your employer should initiate the cancellation process with the MOHRE.
  • The MOHRE will issue a clearance letter confirming the cancellation.
  • Proceed with the general visa cancellation process outlined above, using the clearance letter as one of the required documents.

If you are changing jobs within the UAE, your current employer must cancel your work permit. After that, you need to cancel your current work visa and apply for a new visa under your new job contract. This process is similar to the one outlined in the previous section. It is essential to coordinate with both your current and future employers to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any legal issues. Remember that you have 28 days for obtaining a new visa. Otherwise, there may be fines.

If you have dependent family members (spouse, children, or elderly parents) under your sponsorship, their visas must be cancelled before you cancel your visa. The sponsor must initiate the cancellation process for each dependent family member's visa. The process is similar to the general visa cancellation steps outlined earlier in this guide.

Interesting fact! Large companies may sometimes arrange family visas for their employees.

You can cancel your UAE residence visa at the GDRFA office in the emirate where your visa was issued. Alternatively, you can submit the cancellation application and required documents at a registered typing center, which will then forward the documents to the GDRFA on your behalf. In Dubai, you can cancel visas in an AMER Center.

If you have been outside the UAE for longer than six months, your residence visa may be considered invalid. In such cases, you or your sponsor must apply for visa cancellation at the GDRFA office in the emirate where the visa was issued or in an AMER center in Dubai. Cancel your visas on time to avoid fines!

The cost of cancelling a UAE visa can vary depending on the type of visa, the emirate where it was issued, and any additional circumstances. Typically, the visa cancellation fee is about AED 500. Additional fines or fees may apply if you have overstayed your visa or if your residence visa has been considered invalid due to extended absence from the UAE.

The visa cancellation process usually takes a few days.

Cancelling your UAE visa is a crucial step when leaving the country or changing jobs, and it is essential to be aware of the process and requirements. By following the steps outlined in this guide and ensuring you have the necessary documents, you can smoothly navigate the visa cancellation process.

The UAE Visa Cancellation Guide: What You Need to Know

tourist visa cancellation dubai

Navigating the process of UAE visa cancellation can seem daunting, especially if you're planning to leave the country permanently. Understanding the steps involved and who is responsible for what can simplify this process, ensuring a smooth transition for you and your dependants. Here's a detailed breakdown of everything you need to know about canceling your UAE residence visa.

ENQUIRE NOW

Who Can Cancel Your Residence Visa in the UAE?

The process begins with identifying who can actually cancel your visa. If you're sponsored by an individual or an organization, they are responsible for initiating the visa cancellation. For those holding an investor visa, you have the autonomy to start the process independently.

Company-Sponsored Visa Cancellation

For those sponsored by a company, there's a specific procedure that needs to be followed:

Before proceeding with visa cancellation, it is crucial to ensure that you have unemployment insurance in place. This proactive step helps avoid potential fines and provides a safety net during the transition period. Unemployment insurance not only protects you from financial penalties but also offers support in the event of job loss, ensuring compliance with regulations and safeguarding your financial stability during unforeseen circumstances.

Cancellation of Labour Card and Contract: The sponsoring company must apply to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) for the cancellation of your labour card and employment contract. Your signature is essential on this application, marking your agreement and acknowledgment of the process.

Application to Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP): Following the response from MOHRE, the company can proceed to apply for visa cancellation through the ICP. This step is pivotal and marks the formal initiation of your visa cancellation.

Work Permit Cancellation: Alongside, your work permit needs cancellation. This cannot proceed without your written consent, confirming that you've received all your dues, gratuity, repatriation expenses, and any other benefits agreed upon with your employer.

Process to Cancel Residence Visa via GDRFA Dubai

With the primary steps taken by your sponsor, the next phase involves your direct action:

Receiving Clearance Statement: Once the above documents are canceled, you'll receive a clearance statement. This is crucial for generating a visa cancellation request at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai .

Cancelling Dependants' Visas: If you have dependants under your residence visa, their visas must be canceled before you can finalize your own visa cancellation. This can be done in two ways:

Visiting a Typing Centre: For a more hands-on approach, visiting a typing centre can facilitate the process.

Online through GDRFA: For convenience, the GDRFA's official website offers an online process to cancel dependants' visas.

Key Considerations

Ensure All Dues Are Cleared: Before initiating the visa cancellation, make sure all financial dues, loans, and other obligations are settled. This prevents any legal complications during the process.

Check for Ban Status: In some cases, visa cancellation might lead to an automatic imposition of an exit ban, especially if there are unresolved financial or legal issues. It's crucial to verify your status to avoid surprises.

Document Collection: Collect all relevant documents, including your passport, visa, clearance statement, and any other paperwork required by GDRFA or your sponsor.

For added convenience, the ICP offers a mobile app available for both Apple and Android users. This app allows you to request visa cancellation directly from your smartphone. The process is similar to the online and typing centre methods, ensuring a user-friendly experience with the added benefit of mobility.

Important Considerations:

Visa Validity Check: It's essential to know the validity of your residence visa, especially if you've been outside the UAE for more than six months. A visa status check can be done online using your passport number.

Consequences of Leaving Without Proper Resignation: Exiting the UAE without resigning properly and completing the necessary exit procedures can lead to being marked as absconding. This situation carries severe consequences, including a travel ban and possible arrest upon attempting to re-enter the UAE.

Settling Financial Obligations: Before leaving, ensure all loans, bills, and financial liabilities are cleared. Failing to do so can lead to legal issues and impede your ability to leave the country smoothly.

Collect Visa Cancellation Proof: Always make sure to obtain physical proof of your visa cancellation, such as a stamp or paper document, before departing the UAE. This serves as crucial evidence of your legal status and can prevent future complications.

Other types include visa-on-arrival holders and prepaid visit visas.

Staying in Dubai after the grace period finishes would result in a fine of AED 50 per day.

What should I do with my Emirates ID if the residence is canceled?

Previously, one could maintain their Emirates ID even after terminating UAE Residence. However, after terminating your UAE residence, you will be required to present your Emirates ID to the GDRFA. You must also submit your Emirates ID if you change employers or sponsors.

It should be noted that if you cancel your UAE resident visa, your company will pay your medical insurance during the grace period. Medical insurance is required for residing in the UAE, thus it will normally be active throughout your grace period.

Can I renew my UAE tourist visa?

Yes, you may, as long as you meet all of the requirements for a Dubai tourist visa renewal.

Can I cancel my UAE residence visa while outside the country?

If you are on a work visa, contact your employers and ask them to terminate it. Talk to them about any obligations or fines, and if relevant, ensure that your residence is cancelled. If your employer refuses to terminate your resident visa, you should contact the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) to address the situation.

If you work for a freezone firm in the UAE, both the employer and the employee must meet at the company's headquarters to end the contract. You will need to provide your passport and Emirates ID, as well as get your UAE residency revoked.

If you wish to cancel a family member's visa (dependent visa), you may do it without having them in the country. All you need is a photocopy of your passport, Emirates ID, and a written application. You may accomplish this at one of Dubai's typing facilities for AED 266, plus extra typing expenses.

Do I need to exit the UAE to extend my stay after the grace period?

After your UAE resident visa has been cancelled, you are not required to leave the country to prolong your stay. You may apply for a tourist visa while in the country and pay the necessary fees (depending on how long you want to stay).

That concludes our guidance to the UAE visa cancellation procedure. Before making a final choice, make sure you understand the most recent criteria for resident permits in the UAE. If you have any issues about your UAE resident visa cancellation, please contact the General Directory of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) at 600-522-222.

As the UAE began its two-month amnesty programme, many illegal residents rushed to rectify their visa status. The campaign came as a sigh of relief for them amidst difficult circumstances. But how did they find themselves in such a challenging situation?

Adverse life conditions forced 73-year-old Indian expat Ali to come to Dubai five years ago. “I worked in the UAE from 1992 until a few years ago,” he said, speaking to Khaleej Times at an Amer centre in Mamzar. “But then my second son had an accident that severely burned him. He needed an operation to regain his ability to speak. So, I had to return to UAE to earn money for that operation.”

After his first work visa expired as a cook, he was recruited by another family. "The man kept saying that my visa was getting rejected due to my age and that he was trying to fix it,” Ali said. “After a year, he fired me, and that's when I realised I was cheated. By then, I had become very sick and developed severe asthma, and there were days I feared I would die."

Ali did odd jobs and spent much of his time in the mosque. “The first few days were very difficult,” he recalled. “My health slowed me down and I was unable to work. But God always showed me the way, either through people or circumstances. I was able to survive. Now, I want to go home and see my people.”

He laughed when asked if he could get his son's operation done. "I barely have Dh10 in my pocket," he said. "The Amer centre waived off the Dh20 charge for my application. How will I have the money for his operation? But I trust God will show me a way."

Ali was issued an outpass on Tuesday, and a group of public relations officers (PRO) called the United PRO Association gave him a free ticket home.

Falling ill

For Ugandan housemaid A.S, it was an illness that ruined her plans. She worked with a family in the UAE when she ran into health troubles. "I was a live-out maid for a family in Jumeirah when I developed a nerve problem, which meant I couldn't lift very heavy objects. I had only been working with them for eight months when it happened. They waited for me to get better, but when things didn't improve, they wanted to fire me."

A.S was in no position to return home. “I had borrowed money from people to come here and had not even finished repaying it. How could I go home? I needed to work to repay the money and look after my family."

She spent the next few months doing part-time housemaid jobs. “It was stressful,” she confessed. “I always felt nervous about being an illegal. Every time a police car would pass by, I would get nervous. I never went to crowded places for fear of being caught. My friends would invite me to parties at night and to the malls, but I would always refuse. It was like living like a shadow."

Now, she can regularise her status two years after arriving in the country. "I want to find a job, but I am aware it is challenging," she said. "But I believe in God. I am hoping that I can stay on. If not, I will go home and try to come back."

Losing passport

Indian expat R.K used to work in a bank when he lost his passport. “Unfortunately, it was also the time when my visa expired,” he said. “I tried applying for the passport, but they needed my residence visa. By then I had an absconding status. I kept shuttling from department to department for help.”

R.K. finds it hard to believe that he is an illegal resident. “During my work, I had very good knowledge of government procedures and regularly used ICP and GDRFA websites. I knew people who could help but in my specific circumstance, no one was able to help. It has been six months now, and I am so happy about this amnesty.”

He now has a job offer from another bank for a similar role he held previously. "However, to get a job in a bank, I need my visa to be sorted. I am still unsure where to go and what to do. I visited an Amer centre, and they were unable to help me. I am not sure whether to go to the GDRFA tent or the Indian Consulate next."

For Filipino couple L.M. and K.M., it was a bounced cheque and missed credit card payments that made them illegals. Running an events company in the UAE, the couple did well until an employee embezzled money and ran away.

"Years of hard work was down the drain," said L.M. "Apart from the financial ramifications, the incident had an emotional impact on us. We were heartbroken, and it took us several months to recover from it. By then, contractors and banks had started calling us. We had maxed out our credit cards, and no money came from anywhere because contractors refused to work with us until we settled their dues."

Eventually, when one contractor deposited a cheque, the couple had a bounced cheque case in addition to non-payment of credit card bills. "Now we are both trying to find jobs during the amnesty so that we can finish off our debts," said L.M. "Hopefully, we can find something."
