South african safari adventure with swain destinations.

By Elizabeth Hoover on December 7, 2020

In September of 2018, I had the adventure of a lifetime as I traveled to South Africa with my partners at Swain Destinations and African Travel, associated with The Travel Corporation. During my time there, I visited a few luxury safari camps and private game reserves that all offered an amazing, intimate look at the stunning geography and wildlife throughout the region.

Below is a summary map of the areas within the Dulini Private Game Reserve I visited on my vacation:

Hoover Africa

Kapama Private Game Reserve

Located just across the road from the Hoedspruit airstrip, the Kapama Buffalo Camp is a 30-minute transfer within the reserve, allowing me to kicks off my safari experience from the very beginning! Here, I enjoyed a luxury tented camp with “soft sides” offering that feeling of “Old Africa” - a very unique experience! Featuring just 10 tents (a 20 guest maximum), each one has en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, heated blankets, coffee/tea maker, minibar, and a private viewing deck. This type of small and intimate camp is, in my opinion, better suited for couples rather than families.

I was lucky enough to be able to capture four of the “Big Five” ( lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo) on my very first day in South Africa! Unfortunately, leopards were scarce in this region. This private reserve did have a fence around it to protect animals from poaching, but smaller animals can come and go as they please and features around 12,000 hectares of undisturbed bush.

Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

In addition to the luxury camp, I was able to visit the Kapama River Lodge, which offered more of a hotel-style feel in the largest of all the Kapama camps. This is a location that is perfect for young couples, groups, and families as it has a very festive and social atmosphere.

6Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

I also visited the Kapama Southern Camp, a villa-style set of accommodations with more of a feeling of being in the Savannah rather than the trees and forest. A great location for families, though kids under the age of 6 are not allowed on game drives.

7Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

Sabi sands Game Reserve

While the leopards were scarce in my first stop, this majestic member of the Big 5 made its appearance here in the Sabi reserve! While here, I stayed at the luxurious Dulini Leadwood Lodge, named after the leadwood trees of the area. This was a very small camp, with views over the Sand River, offering an intimate and serene experience since it allows only 8 people in its four-villa camp at one time.

This was a VERY quiet property with VERY small “social” areas. I would only recommend this to clients seeking privacy and seclusion, such as couples, honeymooners, anniversary trips, or couples wanting to spend time together. I loved how the “areas” of the interior were broken up so that the sitting area with a nice sofa and the sleeping area were separate. Please note that you'll be required to have an escort because of predatory animals that may be in camp (although we never experienced any issues).

12Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

Next up, I visited the Dulini River Lodge, another luxury camp overlooking the Sand River. Featuring eight luxury thatched suites (16 people total) that were JUST renovated and were beautifully designed – light and airy, I would highly recommend this lodge for families with older children, couples, honeymooners, and those celebrating an anniversary. You'll enjoy live animals living and walking through the camp constantly!

13Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

Kruger National Park

My next location was in Kruger National park at the Singita Lebombo Lodge. This quickly became my favorite lodge of the ones I experience, based purely on my personality. Offering 13 suites and one private-use villa (30 pax capacity), this lodge featured bold, contemporary, luxurious open-plan suites suspended over the N’Wanetsi River. The private Villa is set apart from the main lodge and features two, two- bedroom suites, each with a private pool that link together to create a four-bedroom villa with a shared pool.

They had private Range Rovers available for safari game drives along with the ability to rent professional camera and lens while on property so you don't have to pack your own. This lodge would be perfect for young couples, families, sociable people on honeymoons, or anniversary trips as they're able to accommodate any travel style.

Additional special amenities included a cute safari hat, safari bag, safari shawl,  and environmental refillable water bottles. The only minor downside is that rhinos are very scarce in this area due to poaching.

9Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

Next up was the Singita Sweni Lodge, featuring six Sweni suites and one pool suite with a private pool and deck. This property is located next to the river so up-close sightings of animals and especially hippos are sure to be a highlight of your trip! The atmosphere offers the feeling of being in the “trees” even though you are next to the river. This is a smaller lodge perfect for families seeking seclusion or honeymooners looking for privacy.

Cape town, south africa: One & Only

Located in the prime location of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront area, which easy access to all shopping, local artisan craft shopping, and to MANY restaurants on the waterfront and in the shopping center.

I stayed in the Marina Table Mountain Room offering gorgeous views of Table Mountain on back side of hotel. Each room comes with a courtesy cell phone to take outside the hotel and for use calling locally anywhere, it was so handy and convenient - I LOVED this amenity!

This property has Michelin-starred asian restaurant Nobu inside the hotel, has a spa that is separate from hotel and can only be accessed by leaving the back side of hotel and walking (only a couple steps but you must go outside). I also found this hotel had one of the BEST breakfast buffets I’ve ever been to, featuring an a-la carte menu and made-to-order items with so many selections I couldn't get enough!

11Elizabeth-AFRICA-FAM_2018_Presentation

Overall, my experiences in South Africa were amazing, especially with the professional and personal touches offered by Swain Destinations. I felt cared for and looked after during all of the travel managed by Swain. For example, upon our arrival at Singita Lebombo, I received a call in the villa after check-in from the Swain rep asking how we liked Singita and making sure everything was going well. Upon arrival in Cape Town, I was met by a Swain ground rep who provided her business card and direct contact info and introduced us to our transfer driver and porter. At One & Only Cape Town, I was able to reach out to my Swain rep who answered all the questions I had for them during our time there. Swain is an ideal partner for those travelers looking for a luxury experience and enjoys being taken care of during their travel.

When the time is right for your African safari, or any other getaway, I'll be here and ready to craft it into your customized dream vacation.

What people love about Africa Tours

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.
I'm an Australian & travelled with my husband & x2 teenage daughters along with another couple & their teenage sons. I followed the reviews on this tour for approx 12 months prior to travel & some reviews had me rather concerned. I reached out to the manager via email @ Beyond The Nile Tours Ahmed. Ahmed went above & beyond to ensure all of my needs/requests were met & guaranteed that this would be the trip of a lifetime, he did not disappoint. On arrival into Cairo were greeted by Ahmed (another AHMED). I immediately felt at ease with his professionalism & he was very well dressed. I knew straight away we were in good hands. He transported us to the Tolip Golden Plaza Hotel promptly. The hotel is very nice, spacious rooms & very clean. The food was ok (but I am fussy)they have a large buffet for breakfast but note they do not supply or serve alcohol at all in this hotel, it didn't matter to me as I don't drink but it may be an issue to others. Alcohol is not readily available in Egypt at all. It was available on the river cruise but it is not available everywhere in Egypt, worth looking into if you like a drink. The first day of the actual tour started with the pyramids, sphinx & the grand museum. Our tour guide was Hamed, he was very friendly & so funny, he also has a degree in Egyptology, he was full of knowledge. In the evening we opted to take the overnight sleeper train from Giza to Luxor & returned on the train from Aswan to Giza. The train, its not first class, its a rattler, the cabins are very small but clean & the bedding was clean, the staff was friendly, but note the guide does not travel with you on the train, a new guide meets you at the other end. We felt safe, the food was ok, I've had worse & no alcohol is served on the train. It was a definite experience our teenagers loved it, its not the worst thing I have ever done but if your keen for flying throughout Egypt (we weren't) take the flight option instead, you will get a better night sleep. Upon arrival in Luxor we had pre-upgraded our river nile cruise boat to the ACAMAR at a cost to Beyond The Nile Tours. After the sleeper train we were up for luxury & that is exactly what we got on this boat, it was next level, over the top service, our own waiter at out table every day, a pastry chef, it was brilliant service. Definitely worth upgrading to this category if its in your budget. Our tour guide for the 4 night river cruise was Saladino. Saladino studies egyptology & has a real passion for ancient Egypt & he is what I would call top notch, doesn't get much better than him. Saladino went above & beyond for my family & friends & is an absolute cretid To Ahmed & the team & Beyond The Nile Tours. He took photos for us, carried our possessions, lined up for us, put us first in queues, he could not do enough for us & he was just brilliant. He made the holiday so memorable for us & we will truly treasure all the knowledge he shared with us regarding his beloved ancient Egypt. Some advice: There is charges on arrival to the company of US $180 per person, this is for all the entry fees @ the sites & tipping to the drivers, boat people etc. This is actually a small price to pay up front as it is absolute bedlam in Egypt & the guides do it all for you, they line up in the heat in with the crowds to purchase the tickets etc so you don't have to do anything. Book all extra tours through Beyond the nile tours. Their experience/service is next level & always guarantees egyptologists travelling with you Pay the extra money at the valley of the kings to see the tomb of Seti I, it is incredible, was the absolute highlight of my holiday, for an extra charge of approx $70 AUS it was worth every cent. Take US dollars with you, you can't change currency into USD in Egypt so you need to change it before you arrive. Eyptian und is used everywhere however they love the US money better. Overall I would highly recommend this tour, Beyond The nIle Tours gave us everything & more & it was the absolute holiday of a lifetime for us. We are truly grateful to Ahmed & his team, book with confidence you will not be disappointed.
An enjoyable, efficient, and well organized tour. The jam-packed itinerary ensures you get the most out of your time during your stay. Our tour guide Nabil was simply amazing. So friendly, knowledgeable, and informative. He made ancient Egypt come alive for us through his wonderful storytelling. I'd definitely recommend this tour.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
