2. Aquarium

Divided into three major sections freshwater, marine and brackish water the aquarium is a huge hit amongst kids and the star attraction at the Dehiwala zoo. A large variety of fish species endemic to the country have been painstakingly bred in the zoo ponds and 22 tanks spread in this area. 3. Butterfly Garden

The Galpagos Giant Tortoise and crocodiles welcome visitors to the Reptilium section of Dehiwala zoo which exhibits around 32 endemic and foreign species of reptiles. The snakes section is home to fearsome species like the Hump Nosed Viper and Sri Lankan Cobra along with gigantic pythons. About Dehiwala Zoo Night Safari

Since last year the zoo also opens up at night on weekends to allow visitors to observe nocturnal activities of the various animals. This thrilling and unique experience makes for a great family visit and is quite popular amongst locals also.

The Dehiwala Zoo, located in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a popular attraction showcasing a diverse array of wildlife in a picturesque setting. New night safari: Dehiwala Zoo to function till 10 pm

The Dehiwala Zoological Gardens will be open to the public from 7.00 pm till 10.00 pm with a series of new attractions, the Government announced today.

Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera stated that this special night safari segment will come into effect from September 09 onward.

Accordingly, following the regular opening hours 8:30 am till 6.00 pm, the Dehiwala National Zoological Gardens will be open to the public for an additional three hours from 7.00 pm till 10.00 pm, after the new programme is implemented.

At a distance of 13 km from Colombo Fort Railway Station, National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka is a zoo park situated in Dehiwala, a suburb of Colombo. It is one of the oldest zoological gardens in Asia and among the must-visit Colombo Tourist Places. Also called Colombo Zoo or Dehiwala Zoo, the National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka was initially started by Mr. John Hagenbeck in the late 1920s as a private collection in 11 acres. The zoo was closed at the beginning of World War II. Later, the park was officially taken over by the Government of Sri Lanka on 1st July 1936 and was established as an independent public department in 1946. Stretches over an area of almost 30 acres, the park is home to over 2,500 to 3,000 animals including 79 species of mammals, 31 species of reptiles and 89 species of birds. One can see lions, tigers, panthers, chimpanzees, horses, zebras, crocodiles, and many other animals. The aquarium in the zoo is the only one of its kind in Asia and displays over 500 varieties of aquatic life. Visitors will witness rare and fascinating species such as Arapaima - the largest freshwater fish in the world, Lung Fish- a fish that has real 'lungs' as of human beings, Polypterus - a living fossil, large catfishes, performing sea lions and penguins from the different parts of the world. The zoo also has a Walkthrough Aviary, Reptilian, and Butterfly Park. Along with the amazing variety of flora, it is also popular for its lush green landscaped gardens and dense tree cover. One of the main highlights of the National Zoological Garden is the elephant show, which usually takes place by 5:15 PM. At the Dehiwala Zoo, There’s a need for better animal care

The National Zoological Gardens is amongst the oldest in the Asian region and is 82 years old.  Initially set up by John Hagenback as a transitory home for captured wild animals, waiting to be transported to Zoos in Europe, it became the property of the government of then Ceylon in 1936. The Dehiwala Zoo, as it is commonly known occupied 11 acres of land at the beginning and on becoming a government owned entity functioned as a place of entertainment for the public who were also interested in seeing and learning about the various animals kept there.

In 1980 the focus changed with the zoo becoming one of the pioneers of the “open zoo” theory. As its website states, “the menagerie concept of old was abandoned for open spaces and ‘soft’ barriers instead of bars.”

Now occupying 23 acres of land, the zoo is home to 265 species varying from mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, butterflies and three families of amphibians,  totaling something between 3000 and 3500 animals. The zoo’s website promotes its open concept as one where the “numbers of species in exhibits were scaled down and many animals were given significant spaces in order to facilitate their natural behavior.”  But a visit to the zoo in March this year, tells another story.

The cages where the Ring tailed Lemur, Silver Leaf monkey, Hamadryas baboon and the White toque monkey are kept were small in comparison to the distances monkeys travel in the wild. The cages also lacked greenery and trees. The Hippopotamus’s enclosure had a dirty muddy water hole while the water for the Black Rhinoceros seemed inadequate and unclean.

There were two water holes where the Sambhur and spotted deer are kept; the small one made of cement was full while the other was empty. There were no water holes large enough for the deer to bathe in. The area where the Japanese deer are kept had no water hole, but was littered with bits of plastic and polythene. The space allocated for the wild boar meanwhile seemed inadequate and had just a small water hole, but not for bathing.

Joa the African elephant had his hind and front legs tied and could hardly move. The Director of the Zoo, Dammika Malsinghe explained that the elephant was tied as he was in musth.

Restricted within an enclosure, there was one Chimpanzee repeatedly throwing himself against the glass window. The situation was made worse by a visitor who was making noises at the chimpanzee, annoying it further.

Another chimp was perched on top of a high tree gazing over the wall, perhaps dreaming of a free world.

During this visit which took place between 3 pm to 5 pm we noticed that there were no curators near the cages and enclosures to guide visitors or discourage them from harassing the animals.

Macaws are said to fly nearly 15 miles (24 kilometers) in search of food. Yet, the Scarlet macaw, Green winged macaws and the Blue and Yellow macaws are housed in small cages severely limiting their ability to spread their wings. The same is true of the Mountain Hawk Eagle, the Crested Serpent Eagle, the Brahminy Kite and the White Bellied Sea Eagle. Enclosed in small cages, they can hardly fly around. Pieces of polythene, a bottle and a broken windmill both made of plastic were in the enclosure of the newly born lion cubs. With no curators checking on them, one of the cubs was chewing on and playing with the windmill. The water in the enclosure was dirty and muddy.

The elephant show attracts a majority of the zoo’s visitors.  However, they may be unaware of the harassment and torture these animals undergo in preparing for their acts.  Parents encourage their children to watch the elephant show for entertainment, ignoring or unaware of the cruelty inflicted on the animals by the mahouts. The show begins with Indi, Namali and Kema walking in closely followed by mahouts with ankus’ in their hands. While the elephants perform their acts, the mahouts could be seen pointing the ankus at their legs in a threatening manner instilling fear in them. In one act, the mahouts point the ankus at the animals to have them turn around, while holding each other’s tails in their trunks. The announcers proudly claim that such tricks can only be seen at this zoo.

In one instance, when an elephant attempted to spray herself with water a second time as part of the act, the mahout jabbed her in the leg to stop her. Another was seen prodding an elephant for no good reason.

Interestingly, though it is listed as one of Colombo’s attractions, of the 2116407 tourists last year, less than 30,000 visited the zoo.

Former employee and a member of the Zoo Advisory Committee, Environmentalist and Conservationist Rukshan Jayawardene alleges that the zoo is very poorly run with the welfare of the animals getting low importance.

“The monetary benefits of running the zoo are given priority. There are a lot of animal welfare issues and cruelty at the Dehiwala Zoo. The developments that are taking place are due to the strong criticism in the past years. The Dehiwala zoo is a bad zoo. The animals are kept in poor conditions and the mortality amongst the new born animals is high. In the past a new born Rhino cub was trampled to death. A baby giraffe too died soon after birth.   New born snakes have died and a white cobra smuggled  out of the zoo was returned later. New born tiger cubs were given to a lactating sow after the cubs’ mother stopped feeding them. The sow kicked some of the tiger cubs resulting in their deaths,” he claimed.

The mortality rate is also high for the big cats at the Dehiwala zoo, Jayewardene added, stating that there is a lack of commitment and a will to change at the zoo.

“The animals come last always. The bottom line is money. We can’t play with their lives. This is unethical and immoral. The Dehiwala zoo’s night safari is also a strain on some of the animals because these animals are not rested during the day or night. Zoo officials don’t want to see the reality, it is just business as always. As humans we should have more humanity towards animals’, he further charged.

Jayawardene is of the opinion that the Zoo should be shut down.  He suggests closing of enclosures where an animal dies instead of placing new animals there.  Though officials at the Zoo say they are involved in, in-situ conservation and breeding programmes, he dismisses it as being untrue. “It is better to concentrate on the animals in the wild and put our money for their welfare,” Jayewardene said.

Malsinghe refuted Jayawardene’s allegations claiming she was not aware of situations where a baby Rhino had been trampled to death or of new born snakes dying at the Zoo. She said the giraffe that died had not been a baby.  He had been weak and suffering from diarrhoea and had died when he slipped in the mud and fell. This had been about 10 years ago, she added.

Commenting on the death of new born tiger cubs Malsinghe said that incident too happened about 10 years ago and at the time the cubs had been given to a lactating sow because their mother had rejected them. She said she wasn’t sure if any of the new born cubs died. New cubs have been born at this zoo since then and “we have no problem in finding foster parents for new born cubs now”, she added.

In the case of the disappearing white cobra, two inquiries, one by the Zoo and the other by the police had been held but no arrests made. The cobra had been found in a gunny sack inside the premises of the zoo a few days after it disappeared.  Malsinghe claimed that the gunny seemed to have been thrown over the perimeter wall, adding that this incident too had happened five years ago.

She stated that the zoo animals don’t die like they used to in the past.

Malsinghe dismissed the claim that animals on show for the Night safari can be seen during the day, because those areas “are barricaded at day time and visitors are not allowed there.”

“There will soon be a proper animal management program where excess animals will either be exchanged with or donated to foreign zoos.

Other extras such as snakes, deer and sambhur are released to the wild in coordination with the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC).”

“Conservation centres at the Dehiwala Zoo, the Safari Park in Hambantota and the Pinnawala Zoo have been set up to breed the Rusty Spotted cat, the Pangolin and the Slender Loris and release them to the wild in coordination with the DWLC,” Malsinghe further added.

Plans are afoot to demolish all the cages, and build suitable enclosures.  The Lions, Bengal tigers and Chimps will have new enclosures, and a modern aquarium will soon be added as well as two spacious aviaries and new cages for the birds.

The zoo will also have a new hospital.  The welfare of the animals, visitors and employees is also taken into consideration. CCTV cameras will also be installed at the Dehiwala zoo this year.

Malsinghe maintains that the chimpanzees have been allocated the maximum space possible.  “If we are to give them sufficient space we need at least ½ acre. If the chimps are in open cages we have to have hot wires but that is not ethical. The macaws are in small cages because these are breeding pairs,” Malsinghe explained. Commenting on the lack of water facilities in some of the enclosures Malsinghe said that not all animals require a bath and the drinking water given to them is sufficient. “The Japanese deer enclosure has drinking water inside the den and is not visible to visitors.  The water in the Hippos enclosure is changed every day. But hippos defecate in the water. So it looks as if it has not been changed for many days. We will be installing a filter system. Work on it will start at the end of 2018”, she said.

Joa meanwhile will be sent to the Safari Park in Hambantota before the end of April, ‘where he will have a bigger space to roam around,” Malsinghe said.  She added that there were no plans to stop the elephant shows but some changes had been made and the circus performances by the elephants had been discontinued.

Expressing surprise that the mahouts carried the ankus during the show, Malsinghe said she would” check on that .” adding that the animal enclosures were expected to be clean and free of plastic and polythene. She told Counterpoint that she will inquire into the matter and “the harassment caused to the chimpanzee by a visitor,” on her return from a trip overseas.

Though environmentalists have been pushing to have the zoo relocated, Malsinghe confirmed no decision on that has been made. Commenting on the zoo’s income, she said, “Only once the projects are completed can we say if we have incurred profits or losses.”

Dehiwala Zoo – National Zoological Garden of Sri Lanka

Hi all, hope you are doing well. Today I’m going to show you another attraction close to the country’s capital . That is the National Zoological Garden of Sri Lanka, in short, Dehiwala Zoo (‘Dehiwala’ is the town where it is situated). The facility is managed and maintained by the Department of National Zoological Gardens.

I happened to visit there recently with my camera. So today I’m going to share the images I captured there, with you. Today I don’t have much to talk. You all know what you will get to see in the zoo. In Dehiwala Zoo you will meet both locally found animals and those who aren’t locally found. There are mammals, birds, Butterflies, reptiles, fish etc.

These long legged and long necked Herons can be seen right at the entrance. The amazing thing is, there is no cage around them, but they don’t leave.

Here is the map of the zoo. I recommend to refer it before starting the journey. It will help you to manage your route.

It was very hard to catch this guy in the frame.

There are two bird enclosures in Dehiwala Zoo. This Beautiful Macaw spotted in one of them. There are lots more of them there.

Caught this interesting scene in the same enclosure as above. A Cockatoo was eating a Maize (Corn) holding by one of his legs (or hands). I have never seen anything like this before.

There is a pond dedicated to Geese.

He doesn’t care anyone around, he is just sleeping.

But the below ones are totally different. They are showing off very much.:D (The videos posted here is captured by a smartphone camera in an earlier day. So please don’t mind the quality.)

This one was also walking very fast. Took a number of shots to capture him. This one is also little bit blurred.

Oh snap! He caught me shooting him. He is angry I guess.:D This one is taken at the second bird enclosure.

On my recent visit I saw that they are transferred to another cage temporarily. Couldn’t capture them properly due the glass around the cage.

This one made me really sad. Seems like he really needs to go out of that cage.

Among other Elephants there is a different one. He is an African Elephant, you won’t see them in Sri Lankan jungles.

This guy was sleeping on wooden attic without any hesitation.

His horns are gorgeous right? Their name is Greater Kudu.

Saw an interesting thing there. There is a height scale for Giraffes in their cage. Yeah, he is 12 feet tall!

This is the saddest thing I saw in Dehiwala Zoo. This Mule looked so sad, and he desperately needed people to caress him. When someone goes close to the cage, he puts his head out through the bars to be caressed.

These Zebras were eating and they have positioned into nice pattern.

So sorry that I couldn’t cover the whole zoo this time. There are a lot more animals there, Lions, Horses, Reptiles, Butterflies, Sloth Bear, Chimpanzees, etc. Further, there is a large aquarium also.

Please don’t get me wrong though that I accept the animal captivity. They don’t deserve to be caged in any form.

Krasnoyarsk Krai is a federal subject of Russia located in Central and Eastern Siberia, part of the Siberian Federal District. Krasnoyarsk is the capital city of the region.

History of Krasnoyarsk Krai

The first state in the territory of southern Siberia appeared in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Ancient Chinese chronicles called it Dinlin. Around 201 BC, Dinlin state was defeated by the Hunnu (the ancestors of the Huns) - an ancient Turkic nomadic people who inhabited the steppes to the north of China from 220 BC until the 2nd century AD. To protect the country against their raids Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall of China.

After the defeat of Dinlin, the Turkic tribe of the Kyrgyz settled in Khakass-Minusinsk depression. In 840, Kyrgyz state destroyed Uighur Khanate and extended its power in Tuva and Mongolia. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Kyrgyz were conquered by the Mongols.

Since that time, the Kyrgyz ceased to play an independent role in the Asian international politics. But in the Minusinsk Hollow, the surrounding area of Krasnoyarsk and other northern territories, the Kyrgyz were the most powerful force and resisted the Russian Cossacks who were engaged in the conquest of Siberia. In the end they could not prevent the incorporation of these territories into Russia.

More historical facts…

Until 1629, the territory of present Krasnoyarsk krai was part of a vast region with its center in the town of Tobolsk. In the 1760s-1780s, Siberia began to be used as the main place of exile. In 1822, Yenisei gubernia (province) was established after the separation of Siberia into Western and Eastern. In 1863, 44,994 exiles lived in the Yenisei province representing 1/7 of the total population of the province. According to the 1897 census, 570,200 people lived in the province.

On December 7, 1934, Krasnoyarsk Krai was formed. The borders of the region were almost the same as of Yenisei gubernia of the Russian Empire. In 1991, Khakassia Autonomous Oblast being originally part of the region became a separate subject of Russia - the Republic of Khakassia.

On January 1, 2007, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) Autonomous Okrug and Evenky Autonomous Okrug were united in a single region called Krasnoyarsk Krai, the autonomous okrugs became Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) and Evenky districts.

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Features

Krasnoyarsk Krai occupies 13.86% of the territory of Russia. It is the second largest region of the country after the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) that occupies 18% of the territory. It is located in the basin of the Yenisei River. In the north, the region is washed by two seas of the Arctic Ocean - the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea.

The length of Krasnoyarsk Krai from the north to the mountains of Southern Siberia is about 3,000 km. Cape Chelyuskin, located on the territory of the region, is the extreme northern point of the mainland of Russia and Asia.

On the coat of arms of Krasnoyarsk Krai you can see a lion with a sickle and spade reflecting the main occupation of the locals in the past - agriculture and mining (gold in the first place).

The climate varies from sharply continental to temperate continental. It is characterized by strong temperature fluctuations during the year.

On the territory of the region there are three climatic zones: arctic, sub-arctic and temperate. Winters are long, summers are short. The average temperature in January is minus 36 degrees Celsius in the north and minus 18 degrees Celsius in the south, in July - plus 13-20 degrees Celsius respectively.

The main rivers are the Yenisei, Angara, Nizhnyaya Tunguska, Khatanga, Pyasina, Podkamennaya Tunguska. The Yenisei, flowing from south to north, is one of the largest rivers in the world.

There are about 323,000 lakes that are more than 300 meters in length. About 85% of them are located in the Arctic Circle. Lake Taimyr is the largest lakes in the region (4,560 sq. km.). Other major lakes: Bolshoye Khantayskoye, Pyasino, Keta, Lama.

The largest cities of Krasnoyarsk Krai are Krasnoyarsk (1,103,000), Norilsk (184,100) Achinsk (104,300), Kansk (87,600), Zheleznogorsk (80,300), Minusinsk (66,200), Zelenogorsk (61,100), Lesosibirsk (58,400), Nazarovo (48,900).

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Natural Resources

This region has more than 95% of Russian reserves of nickel and platinum group metals, more than 20% of gold, significant reserves of cobalt, nepheline ore, magnesite, Iceland spar, fine quartz sand, refractory clay, graphite, 63 industrial metals, and other minerals, as well as about 70% of Russian coal, which makes 20% of the world’s coal.

Intensive coal mining is conducted in Kansko-Achinsky basin, Tungussky basin. More than two dozen oil and gas fields have been found. Gorevskoye deposit of lead (42% of all Russian lead), one of the largest deposits in the world, is located here. About 21% of apatite raw in Russia is located in Maymecha-Kotuyskaya apatite area.

In 2009, industrial exploitation of Vankor oil and gas field began. Oil reserves in the field exceed 260 million tons, natural gas - about 90 billion cubic meters.

The area of the forest fund of the Krasnoyarsk region is 168 million hectares. Forests cover 71% of the territory. The total timber reserves are estimated at 14.4 billion cubic meters, 18% of Russian reserves of timber.

Such animals as sable, squirrel, arctic fox, fox, ermine, and reindeer are found in large numbers. The population of wild reindeer is estimated at 600 thousand heads.

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Economy

Due to significant reserves of mineral resources, power resources and heavy industry, the Krasnoyarsk region plays an important role in the Russian economy.

Significant power resources helped to create such large plants as Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Plant, Krasnoyarsk Metallurgical Plant, Achinsk Aluminum Plant. The regional plants produce about 27% of Russian aluminum. Norilsk Nickel, the Russian mining and metallurgical company, produces over 70% of Russian copper, 80% of nickel, 70% of cobalt, and over 90% of platinum group metals.

Krasnoyarsk Krai possesses the largest in Russia potential for hydropower development. Sayano-Shushenskaya, Krasnoyarsk, Boguchany hydroelectric power plants are among the largest in the world.

Machine-building plants in the region produce civil and military goods. Woodworking, pulp and paper industries are also developed as well as chemical industry.

The climate of Minusinsk Hollow is considered the best in Siberia - vegetables and fruits of the best quality are grown here. Over 50% of agricultural output is produced in the central and southwestern parts of the province.

Krasnoyarsk Krai is a large transport hub of Siberia. The railways include the Trans-Siberian Railway with its branches, South Siberian Railway, Norilsk Railway.

The largest highways are M53 Baikal (Novosibirsk - Irkutsk) and M54 Yenisei (Krasnoyarsk - Kyzyl - Mongolia). Yemelyanovo International Airport located near Krasnoyarsk is the largest international airport of the region.

Attractions of Krasnoyarsk Krai

In the Krasnoyarsk region there are more than 4,500 historical and cultural monuments, objects of archaeological heritage. Shalobolinskaya rock paintings, Paleolithic sites on Afontova mountain in Krasnoyarsk, mounds in Minusinsk Hollow, remnants of fortifications are evidence of the life of ancient people on the territory of the region.

The town of Yeniseysk is a unique monument of town-planning art of the 18th - early 20th centuries. In 2019, Yeniseysk will celebrate the 400th anniversary. The town is included in the preliminary list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Architectural monuments are also concentrated in Krasnoyarsk, Achinsk, Kansk, Minusinsk, Shushenskoye, the villages of Taseevo and Ermakovskoye.

Krasnoyarsk Krai has several unique museum complexes: “Shushenskoye” - a historical and ethnographic museum-reserve, which retains part of an old Siberian village; Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and the Far East; Minusinsk Museum named after Martyanov - the oldest museum in Siberia; Museum of Permafrost in Igarka - the only museum in the world with a unique dungeon deep in the permafrost soil.

The region is rich in recreational resources that allow to develop almost all types of tourism: safaris on reindeer and dog sledding, ecotourism, horse riding, cross-country skiing and hiking, spa treatment. The most famous spa complexes are “Sosnoviy Bor” on Lake Tagarskoye, “Shushenskiy” on the shore of the mountain river Oja, “Lake Uchum”, “Krasnoyarsk Zagoriye” in the foothills of the Western Sayan.

Krasnoyarsk Krai also offers great opportunities for hunting and fishing, cultural, educational and pilgrimage tourism, business and event tourism (All-Russian festival of national culture “Siberian maslenitsa”, Kansk Video Festival, the festival “Yenisei ukha (fish soup)”, Yenisei August Fair, Day of the Minusinsk tomato, National Festival “Vysotsky and Siberia “, the International festival of ethnic music and crafts” MIR Siberia “).

Reserves and Natural Parks

• Bolshoy Arctic Nature Reserve - the largest nature reserve in Eurasia,
• State Nature Biosphere Reserve “Sayano-Shushenskiy” located in the south of the region on the left bank of the Yenisei River, in the area of influence of the Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoir,
• Putoransky State Nature Reserve located within the plateau Putoran, in the north-western part of the Central Siberian Plateau, to the south of the Taimyr Peninsula,
• Stolby Nature Reserve, from the north-east this reserve borders on Krasnoyarsk,
• Taimyr Reserve - one of the largest reserves in Russia located in the north of Krasnoyarsk krai, on the Taimyr Peninsula,
• Tunguska Reserve located in the central part of the Central Siberian Plateau in the territory of Evenk district,
• Central Siberian Reserve located on the western edge of the central part of the Central Siberian Plateau, in the valley of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River,
• National Park “Shushensky Bor”,
• Natural Park “Ergaki”.
