Sperrins Partnership Project

Sperrin Area of outstanding natural beauty

Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is one of eight AONB across Northern Ireland and was first designated in 1968 and to date has not benefitted from a management plan unlike the other areas.  The wider Sperrins area stretches from the Donegal border in the west, to Lough Neagh in the east and to the Atlantic shores in the north. The natural asset of the mountain range mixed with the unspoilt landscape of winding rivers, sun swept valleys and scenic lakes all translate into a region recognised as one of the most idyllic geographical areas of rural Ireland.  The area is rich in historic and archaeological heritage and folklore.

Meet the Sperrin AONB Project Officer...

Name and Job Title:

Dearbháile Hutchinson, Sperrin AONB Project Officer

What attracted you to the role?

I come from the area myself and growing up the Sperrins was a big part of my life. I’ve fond memories of exploring the area with my family from an early age and this is something that I now do with my own children. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a beautiful landscape right on my doorstep. When I saw the role advertised, I knew straightaway that I would love to be involved in such an interesting and exciting project.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

I think I’m most looking forward to getting out and meeting the people who make the Sperrins what it is. My career background is in Community Development, so I understand the valuable work that takes place on the ground within communities and how important it is to have everyone involved.

Tell us something interesting about yourself…

I have three young boys, so I am well outnumbered in my house. Ironically, I come from a family full of girls, with three sisters, and always said I would also love a brother!

As Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Project Officer, Deabháiles role will include delivering an identified programme of conservation, enhancement and promotion actions for natural, built and cultural heritage in Sperrin AONB and sustainable tourism activities. A key part of the role will be to engage with local communities, land owners and other key stakeholders to identify, agree and implement planned measures and agree project solutions. This role will include being responsible for co-ordinating activities in environmental management, sustainable development, raising awareness and good practice within the geographic area with its partners.

The sperrin sculpture trail – a giant adventure.

sperrins tourism limited

Nestled in the heart of Northern Ireland, the Sperrin Mountains offer nature lovers and adventure seekers an unforgettable experience.  And deep within this beautiful landscape, lie three gentle and majestic giants.

Together, the trio form the Sperrin Sculpture Trail, a new art installation created by world acclaimed artist, Thomas Dambo, to showcase the geology, archaeology and heritage of the Sperrins. The giants represents the past, present and future.

Visitors will use the stunning walking trails and dramatic driving and cycle routes to travel between the sculptures enabling them to immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of the Sperrins.

The Giants of the Sperrins Sculpture Trail is a hugely exciting and innovative tourism project created to showcase the epic stories associated with the Sperrins, the inspirational nature of the landscape and the giant spirit of its people. The trail consists of three distinct, innovative, and unique yet linked artworks by the internationally renowned artist  Thomas Dambo .

Installed at three different locations all within the Sperrins region  The Giants of the Sperrins  are born from the geology, archaeology and heritage of the Sperrins. They evoke the mystical, and celebrate the ancient, intriguing and atmospheric natural beauty and history of the region. They embody past, present and future and speak specifically of their location:

  • Nowanois , the Seanchaí or storyteller recalls times and generations gone by;
  • Darach , the Guardian watches over the present;
  • Ceoldán  The Stargazer looks to the future, and the unknown.

They call us to explore the story of the many generations that have helped shaped this magical landscape and to appreciate their rich and enduring culture; they call us into the landscape –  to notice, reflect, embrace and cherish this place…the Sperrins.

Where to find the Giants in the Sperrins?

Location 1:  Nowanois: The Storytellers – Glenelly Valley near Cranagh

Address: 274 Glenelly Road, Omagh, BT79 8LS

Location 2:  Darach: The Guardian – Mullaghcarn Mountain Address: Gortin Glen Forest Park, Glen Park Road, Gortin, County Tyrone, BT79 7SU

Location 3:  Ceoldán: The Stargazer – Davagh Forest Address: OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory, Davagh Forest, 155 Davagh Road, Omagh BT79 8JQ

The imposing figures stand proudly in their kindred locations, celebrating their ancient past connections to the Sperrin landscape, and evoking thought and imagination in those who visit.

Secret Sperrins

Pretty fields criss-crossed with hedgerows, soft valleys and heather-clad hills with sweeping views; you'll find them all in the Sperrin Mountains. Despite being one of Ireland’s largest upland areas (it stretches from Strabane in County Tyrone to the shores of Lough Neagh in the east) the Sperrins range is an undiscovered gem – wild, untouched and so beautiful it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .

You can thank the ice age for the variety of landscapes on offer here. Barnes Gap, Gortin Glen and the beautiful valleys of Owenkillew and Glenelly were all scoured out by ice, leaving behind spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Even on a mixed day, you can see as far as Muckish and Errigal in County Donegal. In fact, National Geographic thought so highly of the meandering, occasionally roller-coaster roads in the Sperrins that it included them in its prestigious Top 101 Scenic Drives in the World.

Biking, hiking and more

The Sperrins is a particular paradise for walkers. Whether you’re on for an easy ramble for an afternoon, or in the mood for a hefty hike up into the hills, you’ll find it all here. Undulating hills, quiet valleys and boggy uplands are made for moderate walks, but with 10 peaks higher than 500 metres, including Sawel, the highest, at a leg-stretching 678 metres, there are plenty of more challenging options. However, come prepared and wear boots – this is peat-bog country and you’ll need something tougher than trainers.

These heather-clad moorlands are also popular with horse-riders, cyclists, mountain bikers and parachutists, while gliders take full advantage of the swirling air currents above Magilligan Point). An Creagán Visitor Centre nearby also offers a family-friendly interpretation of the surrounding bogland.

The peace, serenity and beauty of the landscape made it one of the loveliest walks I have done... Moira Burns, WalkNI.com

History and legends

The wild remoteness of the mountains isn’t just a boon to walkers. In centuries gone by, these hills harbored all manner of bandits and ne’er-do-wells, who preyed on luckless travelers. The most famous was one Shane Crossagh Ó Maoláin, a raparee (an ex-soldier turned bandit, named after the Irish for the weapon they used, the half-pike), who evaded the law for years but finally met his end on the gallows in 1720. You can still walk to the Robber’s Table, where legend has it the thieves divided their spoils.

17th century bad guys are only a late chapter in the history of the mountains, for more than 90 sets of stone circles dating back to the Bronze Age have been found here. The most famous are the Beaghmore Stone Circles , which are in the southeast part of the range, along with several Bronze Age megalithic cairns and structures. Their meaning is lost, but they are aligned to the movements of sun, moon and stars.

Stargazing and sightseeing

The Stars and Stones experience allows visitors to truly immerse themselves in the history of this mystical region, merging the Beaghmore Stones Circle’s ancient gravitas with spectacular stargazing in this designated Dark Sky area. This two-hour experience centers around Northern Ireland’s first Dark Sky Observatory in Davagh Forest, set in the foothills of the Sperrins. Here visitors can travel through space on a virtual reality tour, explore fascinating myths and legends and gaze at the glorious, clear night sky through glass-roofed glamping pods.

In the town of Dungannon, the incredible panoramic scenery at the Hill of the O’Neill is another must-see Sperrins sight – especially considering that this was the strategic stronghold of one of the mightiest clans in Ulster, who ruled the land for some 400 years. Seven of the nine counties in Ulster lie before you as you stand in the preserved ruins of this incredible highland rampart. You can also pre-book a guided tour and step inside Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre to hear incredible tales of power, sieges and war, including the Flight of the Earls and how this momentous event changed the course of Ulster’s history forever.
