NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

The BBC might have just revealed its best show of 2025

I May Destroy You - Michaela Coel

We may still have a few months to go, but it looks the BBC has already thrown 2025’s best programme into our TV schedule.

Four years after I May Destroy You , Michaela Coel is returning to the broadcaster with a new drama.

This time, the 36-year-old actress and writer is teaming up Succession creator Jesse Armstrong for a show about a British novelist that returns to her family’s home country of Ghana.

Michaela, who was born in East London to Ghanaian parents, won a Bafta for best female comedy performance for both sexual consent series I May Destroy You and sitcom Chewing Gum.

She’s now starring in ten-part series First Day on Earth, as well as writing and serving as executive producer.

It follows Michaela’s character Henri going through relationship and work issues when she decides to take a job on a film in Ghana, where her parents are from.

Henri also sees it as a place where she can connect with her estranged father as well as her heritage, but her new sense of identity could ‘break her’ or ‘leave her stronger’.

Michaela Coel

The Black Earth Rising star said: ‘I am delighted to be working with VAL, the BBC and HBO again, and to partner with A24; thanks to all of their combined taste, care and expertise, I feel our show is in great hands.

‘The process of creating FDOE thus far has been a beautifully intimate experience, and I am excited to embark on the next phase to eventually offer this as another televisual gift for anyone willing to accompany Henri on what will be a wild odyssey!’

The synopsis teases: ‘British novelist Henri (Michaela Coel) is stuck. Work has dried up, her relationship is going nowhere.

‘So when she’s offered a job on a film in Ghana, West Africa – her parents’ homeland, where her estranged father lives – she can’t resist the chance to reconnect with him and the country of her heritage.

‘But when she arrives neither the job nor her father turn out the way she expected, and soon Henri has to deal with danger and hypocrisy, form new friendships, lose her illusions, and create a new sense of identity – one that might leave her stronger, but could also break her.’

I May Destroy You - Michaela Coel

Announcing the series ahead of the Edinburgh TV Festival on Tuesday, Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: ‘Michaela is one of those exceptional talents whose work I have long admired.

‘I May Destroy You is one of the reasons I wanted to join the BBC. In First Day on Earth, Michaela has created another unmissable series – truly original, heartfelt, hilarious, poetic storytelling and told in a way that only Michaela can. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.’

Executive producers joining Jesse and Michaela, Phil Clarke and Roberto Troni, added: ‘Yet again, Michaela delivers a highly original, singular story that explores the relationship between England and Ghana via a second generation British-Ghanaian woman who takes up the opportunity to return to the homeland of her parents and finds herself encountering a cast of memorable characters and experiences that force her to face some painful home truths.

‘As ever with Michaela, it is by turns shocking, funny and unforgettable, and done in her inimitable style.’

Filming is due to begin later this year.

Michaela rose to fame on Chewing Gum, which first aired in 2015, before finding critical acclaim for I May Destroy You, which was inspired by her personal experience.

Following the success of I May Destroy You, Michaela said her next project may be less exposing and personal saying: ‘If-slash-when I do that, I think it would involve this mysterious thing called ‘the writers’ room’ that I’ve heard about, where other people are also doing [the writing].’

She added to RadioTimes that she was due to shadow ‘absolute legend’ Jesse before the pandemic, saying: ‘I am so curious, so the minute I get a chance I’m gonna be like a little mouse on Jesse Armstrong’s shoulders, listening in, trying to experience how it happens. Because I’ve never been in one. But that would be the next phase.’

She is also known for dark anthology series Black Mirror, musical romance Been So Long and superhero movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

In 2022, she was honoured for ‘fearless’ advocacy through her work, both on and off camera with the Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award at an Women In Film (WIF) event.

University of Houston Students Shine in Amazon Prime’s “The College Tour”

  • University and Campus

HOUSTON, TX – The University of Houston will be streaming into homes and on devices across America this fall. UH is featured in a 30-minute episode of the acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series “The College Tour.” The series showcases what life is truly like on college campuses and tells the story of an institution through the lens of its students.

The University of Houston episode was filmed over several days in April. Ten students provide personal perspective on everything from academics, housing, athletics, career preparation, campus life, Houston’s vibrant culture and more.

“The show offers a glimpse into what makes the University of Houston a unique and special place,” said Lisa Holdeman, UH vice president for marketing and communications. “It’s exciting to see the talents of our students on full display. We are grateful they were willing to share unique perspectives about their experiences at UH.”

In an online exclusive segment “Coffee with the President,” UH President Renu Khator sat down with series creator and host Alex Boylan, a previous winner of CBS’s Amazing Race, to talk about the endless possibilities that Houston presents and how the University of Houston provides a pathway for social mobility.

“Everything is possible in Houston. It’s incredible. The way their lives get transformed, that’s how I define success here at the University of Houston,” said Khator.

Meet the Coogs on “The College Tour”

UH student hosted segments detailing why there is something for everyone at UH.

Academic Excellence:   “I came from a family where we didn’t have a roadmap for success in higher education,” said Jonathan Gaucin, an electrical engineering major and first-generation student from Houston.

Gaucin discusses the transformative academic opportunities he’s found in the Honors College and his experiences with undergraduate research projects on robotics and AI.

Why UH?:   Alexa Emmons, a senior from New Braunfels majoring in human nutrition and foods, hosts a segment featuring the expansive opportunities available to students and the positive impact she has made working at the Cougar Cupboard, UH’s food pantry.

Whose House? Coogs’ House!:   Maithili Padhye a sophomore double major in management information systems and marketing from Katy, shares her experiences as a Cougar fan.

“I love the balance between hard work and play here. Our student-athletes and fans are supportive and compassionate and together it’s a culture that I have learned to love,” Padhye said.

St udent Life:  Natalie Linde, a freshman majoring in biomedical engineering, got involved in student life right away – attending social events, joining student organizations and making a close group of friends to set herself up for future success. She gives a tour of campus life.

Campus Life:   Alexander Mizerik, a senior history major from Sugar Land shows viewers what it’s like to live on campus. UH is home to one of Texas' largest resident communities, where 8,000 students live in nine residence halls on campus.

Hands-on Experience:   Sydney Commerford is a senior journalism major who chose UH, in part, for the training it offers outside the classroom. “UH helps open doors to the future with access to internships, research opportunities and learning abroad programs. I ultimately chose the University of Houston to reach my dreams,” she said.

Different Paths to a Degree:   Veronica Nwanna, a recent graduate of the journalism program and future law schools student, discusses the flexible degree options that allowed her to graduate early.

Community and Support at UH:   Omar Castanon, a junior strategic communications major explains how UH is helping students not just succeed academically but also take care of themselves outside the classroom.

“UH has equipped me with the essential tools for success and support through the emotions that come with being a first-generation student,” he said. “The University of Houston has afforded me numerous support systems to pursue higher education, a dream I once thought unattainable.”

Houston, Space City:   Natalia Marinero, a senior public relations major from Conroe, talks about the world-class opportunities that the city of Houston provides students.

“When I was looking at colleges, I knew that I wanted to have the opportunity to live in a city that gave me world-renown experiences. Whether it would be to live in one of the most diverse cities or professional advancement, I knew that living in Houston and attending UH was the best decision that I could have made for myself,” Marinero said.

UH Traditions:   From the exhilarating rush of Frontier Fiesta to the jubilant celebration of Homecoming, traditions at UH carry a unique story, Sophomore Psychology major Lalaine Ramos reflects on UH’s shared history and collective pride .

The entire episode featuring UH will be live on Amazon Prime in October but if you can’t wait, you can view it right now:

Taylor Swift cancels all Vienna shows for 'Eras Tour' amid planned terrorist attack

All three of Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour" Vienna concerts have been canceled due to a planned terrorist attack. The prime suspect has disclosed details of his planned attack.

News of the cancellations came Wednesday night, mere hours after the local government disclosed suspicions of an attack planned at the event. Swift was scheduled to perform in Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's largest stadium, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Over 170,000 fans were expected to attend the three nights of concerts.

Vienna Federal Ministry of the Interior officials confirmed the arrest of two individuals who are "suspected of having planned attacks at major events," including Swift's scheduled concerts in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. An investigation is ongoing.

Prime suspect had knives and explosives, Austrian officials report

A 19-year-old identified as the prime suspect confessed plans to bring knives and explosives to Taylor Swift's Vienna concert, NBC News reports . The man intended to kill a large number of people before killing himself, according to Austrian officials.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria's Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, released some details of the planned attack at a news conference. The prime suspect, who has North Macedonian roots, had downloaded manuals for building bombs. Officials also found hydrogen peroxide, homemade explosives, detonators and detonator cables at his apartment, he added.

“The situation was serious, the situation is serious. But we can also say: A tragedy was prevented,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said at the news conference.

Another suspect radicalized by ISIS, al-Qaeda

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner said a search of another suspect's apartment turned up Islamic State and al-Qaeda material. The 17-year-old is an Austrian citizen with Turkish and Croatian roots. Officials also found videos and screenshots of home laboratories, which are believed to have been distributed by ISIS and al-Qaeda.

A third suspect, 15, is also an Austrian citizen with Turkish roots. As of Thursday morning, he was still being questioned by law enforcement.

Austrian officials do not believe anyone else was involved in the terrorist plot.

Attacks at Taylor Swift-related events

This is the second Swift-related violent incident in just over a week. On July 29,  three children — ages 9, 7 and 6 — died after a mass stabbing  that injured 10 others in Southport, U.K., during a Taylor Swift-themed class meant for children.

A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said at the time, noting that he will be interviewed by detectives.

Swif t spoke out on the incident  the following morning, saying she was "at a complete loss."

"The horror of yesterday's attack is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock," she wrote on her  Instagram story .

First cancellation of the 'Eras Tour'

This is the first time any of Taylor Swift's concerts have been canceled since the "Eras Tour" began in March 2023. Two of the global pop star's shows have been postponed due to inclement weather, one in Brazil and one in Argentina. Both were rescheduled for shortly after the initial concert dates.
