“By Your Side” by Sade

In “By Your Side”, Sade promises never to leave her significant other but to always be present in every moment of his life, especially the low moments. This person, may have some doubts that anybody would remain by their side during their gloomy days, but the singer proves his thoughts wrong, by pledging that she will never leave their side.

The singer is not only interested in the joyous moments of her partner’s life but in the lonely and sad moments as well. She realizes that those are the times that her lover really needs her presence, and in order for her to prove her loyalty, she is willing to make time and be with him.

Sade uses various terms to signify her partner’s state of mind including moments when he’s down on his knees in depression, or cold in loneliness. She explains that she will take care of him and keep him close enough so that he does not feel isolated. The singer also wants her lover to understand that she is very interested in his well-being and interests; which is why she wants to be his eyes when he cannot go somewhere and bring him back home when he gets lost.

The song is also full of encouragement in that, the singer shows this person that he is more valuable than he thinks he is. She also realizes that when he’s in pain, it needs to be released naturally through tears, but she promises to be there throughout the process of healing.

Sade’s goal is mainly to make her partner feel better and happier than he is, and doesn’t mind even if it means she has to convince him he’s right when she knows he is wrong.

The music video for “By Your Side” was filmed in Los Angeles. It was directed by Sade’s long-time collaborator music video director Sophie Muller.

Cover Versions and Appearances in other songs

Covers of this track have been performed by a number of recording artists since Sade released it in 2000. For example, a 2017 version of this song was released by English band, The 1975. Billy McCarthy also recorded a version of this tune in 2017. Norwegian singer/songwriter Ane Brun performed her version of this track in 2018.

The tune was  sampled  by American songstress, Teyana Taylor in her 2018 song, called, “Issues/Hold On”.

Accolades and Chart Performance

VH1  magazine ranked “By Your Side” as the 48th Best Love Song of All Time.

In 2000, this single reached #17 on the UK Singles charts and peaked at #10 in Italy. The following year, the song got to #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Did “By Your Side” win a Grammy?

The song’s popularity earned the band an award nomination for the category of  Best Female Pop Vocal Performance  at the 44th edition of the annual Grammy Awards ceremony. However, it was beaten to this award by “I’m Like A Bird” by Nelly Furtado.

Back in 2017, Chris was working at a steel mill but had a passion for local history. When a friend raved about a food tour she’d taken in Savannah, Georgia, he thought, “Why not me? Why don’t I go ahead and do this?”

Mobile, with its 300+ years of history and fantastic food scene, was the perfect ingredient for a similar venture.

“Nobody in Mobile was doing it,” Chris said. “It kept me up at night thinking about it. I was like, man, somebody’s going to do this eventually, and I’m not going to be able to live with myself if that person’s not me.”

Chris knew Mobile wasn’t New Orleans or New York in terms of tourism, but it had a charm all its own. And just like that, Bienville Bites was born.

So how did Chris get this thing off the ground? He broke it down for me:

• Build a good website that has an easy booking system
• Set up a booking platform (Chris uses FareHarbor )
• Make relationships with restaurants

“Restaurant owners do not like change,” Chris warned. “So if you’re going to tell a restaurant that we’re going to bring 12 or 14 people into your restaurant, they’re going to freak out. So that’s where that communication is very crucial.”

Chris’s approach was he’d go to restaurants during off-peak hours, have a meal, and then ask to speak to the owner. He’d explain his idea, emphasizing how it could benefit the restaurant.

His first customers were friends and family, of course, before he hit social media hard, particularly Facebook.

“We really hit Facebook hard,” Chris shared. “This is something bigger than our tour there. This is for the city. We’re doing this to promote our city, to grow the food scene in our town.”

So what made Chris’s food tours so popular? Besides the great food, it was the themes that really brought people in.

Mobile’s history runs deep, and Chris turned that into a selling point and he introduced themed tours:

• Haunted tours in October
• Christmas tours
• Mardi Gras tours
• Even a Jimmy Buffett -themed tour

While people love a good food tour, it’s the themed ones that have made Chris’s business a local staple.

70% of Chris’s clientele are locals — people who come back for a different experience every time. And that’s where he struck gold. By offering something fresh with every tour, he built a loyal customer base that was always eager for the next event.

“That’s been the biggest thing that has distinguished us from a lot of other food tours,” Chris said.

How to Scale to $300k

Chris made it easy for people to book a tour through FareHarbor, a platform that handles ticketing and payments.

His food tours run around $99 on Airbnb Experiences , with 40% of that going toward food and drinks. Chris keeps the other 60%, which covers overhead and his team of guides.

Chris didn’t build this business on advertising alone. He built it on reviews. If you look him up on TripAdvisor , you’ll see nearly 300 reviews.

At press time, his closest competition had around 32. 

He always makes a point to ask guests to leave a review after a tour, and it works. It does not matter if it is just 2 people or 14. People walk away raving about the experience.

Chris didn’t stop in Mobile. He’s already expanded to a neighboring town, Fairhope, Alabama, where his food tours are just as popular.

Corporate bookings make up about 25% of Chris’s revenue.

Companies are always looking for team-building activities, and a food tour is the perfect way to get out of the office and into something fun. Chris also taps into local businesses like Airbus , who use his tours to impress out-of-town clients.

Plus, Chris runs the Port City Plate Podcast , where he interviews restaurant owners and tells the stories behind Mobile’s food scene.

The podcast is not only a great marketing tool, but it also helps Chris build relationships with local restaurants—and even supplies fresh content for his tours.

These days, Chris has a team of six guides running six or seven tours every weekend . Chris isn’t giving those tours anymore, but he’s still busy.

His guides come from all walks of life — a retired teacher , a former duck boat tour guide, even a customer who loved the tour so much she moved to Mobile and now gives tours herself!

Now he spends his time working on themed tours, managing corporate bookings, and ensuring his guides have everything they need.

When asked about surprises or unexpected outcomes, Chris’s said. “I never imagined it being a full-time thing,” he said. “I’ve even written a book, A Culinary History of Mobile ! Never saw that coming when I started this side hustle.”

Chris has expanded to Fairhope, Alabama, but his big goal is helping others start their own food tours through his new venture, Food Tour Founders .

So while Chris might not be planning world domination, he’s definitely planting seeds for other food tour enthusiasts to follow in his footsteps.

“I want to give people who are interested in this niche an opportunity to take my course,” Chris explained. “And learn the lessons and perfect the entire strategy of your business and for people to do this in their food tour.”

If your love of lattes is taking a toll on your bank account, maybe you’re considering an espresso machine for your home. There are many pro-style machines, but can any deliver authentic coffee shop flavor? Consumer Reports brews up some buying advice for the caffeinated among us.

If getting your daily caffeine fix at your favorite coffee shop is costing you hundreds of dollars every year, an alternative could be an espresso machine for your home but those aren’t exactly budget-friendly either.

The machines require a certain skill level to operate. You need to learn how to grind the beans to a certain consistency, pack the portafilter, and operate the steam wand, which all of the machines tested have.

Consumer Reports looked for a good, at-home espresso machine that produces a well-balanced espresso and has steam wands capable of producing a fine micro-foam for lattes, cappuccinos, and even latte art.

Those with barista experience may appreciate the Rancilio Silvia Pro X , which costs $1990 for its beautiful design. But $2000 is a lot to spend on a countertop appliance.

If your espresso skills are more basic, consider the Breville Bambino Plus for $500. It’s easy to operate, and even beginners would have a hard time not getting a good espresso from this machine.

Although the $90 DeLonghi EC260BK lacks the fancy features and sleeker look of the higher-end machines, it’s simple to operate and produces a perfectly fine espresso.

But there are even simpler options still for espresso lovers … In CR’s tests, the coffee machine —from the same brand that makes the famous Instant Pot —  the Instant Multi Pod 68MB for $200 earned top scores for brewing temperature, speed, and convenience. You can make espresso and larger servings of coffee using different kinds of pods for each, and you don’t need to know anything about making espresso.

Consumer Reports says consider pairing your coffeemaker with a milk frother, and you’ll have a little cafe right at home. CR’s recent evaluations found several frothers that do a great job frothing both milk and non-dairy alternatives, including the Instant Milk Frother for $30.

‘Funny Girl’ lead Hannah Shankman has a lot in common with Fanny Brice in national tour making stop at First Interstate Center for the Arts

When you put the two side by side, it should come as no surprise that Hannah Shankman was selected to play Fanny Brice in the national tour of “Funny Girl.”

The similarities between the two are more than a little uncanny. Both are Jewish women, both grew up in New York City, and both had their sights set on the stage from an early age.

Brice didn’t grow up in a theatrical family like Shankman (though Brice’s younger brother Lew would go onto be a performer himself), but both ended up making a name for themselves on Broadway.

“It definitely is not lost on me, the similarities between us growing up in New York, being Jewish, being truly go-getters,” Shankman said. “I’ve never taken no for an answer, and, honestly, neither did Fannie.”

After previously acting as the Fanny Brice standby on the “Funny Girl” national tour, Shankman is now stepping into the lead role full-time when the tour resumes in Seattle in late September. “Funny Girl” opens in Spokane on Tuesday and runs through Oct. 6 at the First Interstate Center for the Arts.

“Funny Girl,” which was adapted into a film of the same name starring Barbra Streisand, who originated the role of Brice on Broadway, features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Isobel Lennart.

“Funny Girl” is a semi-biographical musical about Brice (Shankman), star of stage, film and radio. The musical finds Brice reflecting on her life, including her tumultuous relationship with husband Nick Arnstein (Stephan Mark Lukas), a professional gambler, and career, including her time as a member of the “Ziegfeld Follies.”

The musical also stars Melissa Manchester (Mrs. Brice), Izaiah Montaque Harris (Eddie Ryan), Walter Coppage (Florenz Ziegfeld), Leah Platt (Emma/Mrs. Nadler), Christine Bunuan (Mrs. Meeker), Cheryl Stern (Mrs. Strakosh) and David Foley Jr. (Tom Keeney).

“Funny Girl” also features Vinny Andaloro, Jack Bianchi, Courtney Brady, Kate E. Cook, Connor Coughlin, Joel Douglas, Annabelle Duffy, Mathew Fedorek, Alex Hartman, Kathy Liu, Missy Marion, Bryan Charles Moore, Sami Murphy, Emily Anne Nester, Myah Segura, Brendan Sheehan, Jordon Taylor, Sean Seamus Thompson, Travis Ward-Osborne and Annaliese Wilbur.

The tour uses the same revised book Harvey Fierstein created for the 2022 Broadway revival, which both trims down the show and also adds moments to clarify the storyline. Shankman said this production, which she called “a whole new ‘Funny Girl,’ ” also features new songs by Styne and Merrill and new choreography by Ellenore Scott and Ayodele Casel.

Following in the footsteps of not only Brice herself but also fellow Fannies such as Streisand, Beanie Feldstein, Julie Benko and Lea Michele, who all played the role during the Broadway revival, and Katerina McCrimmon, who played Fanny for the first part of the national tour, is no small task. But Shankman, thinking back to those similarities, feels like the opportunity was practically destined the moment she began performing.

“Fanny was such a trailblazer for women that it almost feels, and I’m going to use a Yiddish word, but it feels very bashert, which means ‘meant to be,’ ” Shankman said. “She really paved the way for so many female comedians, like Joan Rivers and Sarah Silverman, that being a female performer, a Jewish female performer, it just feels so right to step into these shoes.”

Stepping in those shoes full-time will be a change in schedule for Shankman but not a change in how she performs as Brice. While she was a standby, she still felt she had the ability to put her own spin on the character and plans to continue bringing that spin to the show each performance, albeit with a chance to dive deeper into Brice – the person and the character.

Helping in that deep dive was a recent opportunity to attend “Fanny’s Day Out” at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles with Benko and McCrimmon, which Shankman called a treat. The exhibit featured memorabilia from Brice and the “Funny Girl” film adaptation as well as lunch at the museum’s Fanny’s Restaurant and Cafe.

Brice, and “Funny Girl,” still hold a place in people’s hearts, Shankman said, because of Brice’s story of triumph but also her humor, which she used to connect with people on and offstage, leading to yet another connection between the two performers.

“That’s how I operate in life, so it’s so fun to step into those shoes and to really have the opportunity to not only use humor to make people laugh, but also sometimes to lighten the mood or to connect with people,” Shankman said. “It’s really such a vehicle in the show, and it’s a pleasure to get to play.”

DES ALLEMANDS, La. - Singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey tied the knot with her boyfriend Jeremy Dufrene, a Louisiana airboat captain and swamp tour guide. 

According to PEOPLE, Del Rey, 39, and Dufrene obtained a marriage license on Sept. 23. The two said their vows Thursday along the bayou where Dufrene works at Arthur’s Air Boat Tours. 

The  11-time Grammy nominee and Coachella 2024 headliner wore a floor-length white gown with a scooped, ruffled neckline. Photos from  The Daily Mail show Del Rey’s father walking her down the aisle. 

The couple first made headlines in August, when Del Ray, 39, was spotted holding hands with Dufrene backstage at Leeds Festival in the U.K. last weekend. A fan captured the moment and shared it on  TikTok .

It appears the two have known each other since at least 2019, when Del Rey took one of Dufrene’s airboat tours out of Des Allemands, Louisiana.

She posted about the tour on  Facebook

In May, the tagged Dufrene in a photo in front of a swamp on  Instagram with the caption: "Family w my guy @jeremy.dufrene" That was right before she headlined Hangout Fest in Alabama. 

Del Rey previously dated Oklahoma police officer and reality star  Sean Larkin , and she's reportedly been  engaged at least twice .

Forgotten Arsenal star finally finds new club after signing for League Two side

Former Arsenal star Carl Jenksinon has been without employment since leaving Australian side Newcastle Jets but is now back in English football after a move to a League Two club

Ex- Arsenal and England star Carl Jenkinson has signed for League Two side Bromley after ending a five-month search for a club.

The right-back has been a free agent since leaving Australian side Newcastle Jets in the summer at the end of his contract -and he has finally found a new club after putting pen to paper on a deal with Bromley.

Speaking after the move was made official, the 32-year- said: “It’s good. I’m glad it’s sorted out now. All the international clearance and stuff was dragging on a bit so I’m really happy it’s sorted now and it’s done and dusted.”

The move to Bromley signals Jenkinson’s first return to English shores since 2021. The defender, who made 70 appearances for Arsenal, spent time with Charlton, West Ham , Birmingham and Nottingham Forest .

He initially moved to Australia in 2021 after joining Melbourne City on loan from Forest. He then joined Newcastle Jets permanently, making 34 appearances for the side over two seasons.

Jenkinson had previously admitted that his move to Arsenal back in 2011 might potentially have come to early in his career. Speaking to the Fozcast, he said: “There could easily be an argument for that [the move coming too early] right, but the the truth of it was that I got in the team [at Charlton], I started playing well, and clubs would become interested.

“There were more and more coming to each game, then I heard Arsenal are interested and then whether it was too soon or it was not too soon, or I wasn’t ready to make that step up, I’m never saying no.

“They were my boyhood club as well, I was never going to say ‘Sorry Arsene, I’m not ready yet, come back next year’, you know what I mean?

“You’re jumping at it, you’re absolutely jumping at it. When I look back now, like it was it was a massive jump, and yeah maybe right club, wrong time, but I didn’t care that it was the wrong time.

“I wanted to go and play for Arsenal and have a crack, and if it took a bit of time to settle into that and to feel a part of things and feel like I can play there and I belong there, then so be it.”

Jenkinson could potentially make his Bromley debut this weekend. They host MK Dons and will certainly be hoping for improvement. The side currently sit 18th in League Two after just two wins from their opening seven games.
