This was perhaps one of the best sunsets we have witnessed in a long time to come. The winter sun was setting behind the Chhatris of Orchha while we watched the dramatic colours of the sky from the banks of the Betwa River. To be honest, I did not have huge expectations from Orchha after our visit to Khajuraho. We came from Khajuraho to Orchha with an open mind to enjoy whatever came our way. While we were researching for places to visit in Orchha, we realized how much this small town in Madhya Pradesh had to offer. And after exploring Orchha, we simply fell in love with this underrated destination in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

Orchha has an old-world charm. Located on the banks of the Betwa River, this small agricultural town of India has some of the most beautiful architectural gems in India. While the town is centered around the Ram Raja Temple, the town and its surrounding countryside are dotted with several monuments, forts, temples and cenotaphs. This 500 years old town is a place rich in history and heritage – a place that was going to become one of my favourites.

Orchha – A Brief History

Orchha was once the capital of a flourishing kingdom ruled by the Bundela Kings. The State was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Chief Rudra Pratap Singh. He also shifted his capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha on the banks of River Betwa. The site of the new town was a better place to fortify against the Mughal attacks.  The Bundelas were the descendants of Gaharwar Rajputs of Varanasi .

After almost a decade, Bir Singh Deo (1605 – 1627) became the King of Orchha and was perhaps one of the greatest Bundela Kings of Orchha. The state reached its zenith in political power and splendor in architecture during his reign. He had built several forts, palaces and monuments, not only at Orchha, but also at Datia and Jhansi. He had also built several temples at Mathura and Varanasi and is one of the major contributors of spreading Bundeli architecture to the Northern parts of India.

Orchha remained the capital of the Bundela Dynasty from 1531 to 1783. Later the capital was shifted to Tikamgarh.

During British rule, the area became a part of Bundelkhand Agency. After the independence of India, Vir Singh, the then king, merged his state with the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The district became a part of Vindhya Pradesh state, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Orchha Trip

We visited Orchha during the winter months of January. Our Madhya Pradesh trip started with Gwalior and Morena . After that we visited Khajuraho before arriving at Orchha. Once we landed at Orchha, it seemed like any other small town of India. But once we were exploring the place, we were totally engrossed with the chilled-out vibes of the place. We spent two days in Orchha and explored most of the attractions in the place.

Orchha literally means hidden. There are a lot of interesting places to visit in Orchha, especially for history enthusiasts. Even if you are not into history, the magnificence of the place will definitely draw you in. So here is a quick Orchha travel guide to help you plan your trip and make most of your time in Orchha.

How to Reach Orchha?

Orchha is located in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest major railway station from Orchha is in Jhansi, around 20 km away and takes about 30 minutes to reach. To get to Orchha, you have to reach Jhansi first.

Jhansi is one of the major railway stations of Central India and is well connected to all the major cities of the country. From Delhi, it is about five to six hours of train journey. However, you should get your tickets well in advance.

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Gwalior Airport, 130 km away. From Gwalior, you can either take a train to Jhansi and then reach Orchha, or take a private cab to reach Orchha directly. Buses are also available from Gwalior to Orchha.

Since we were coming from Khajuraho, we took a train from Khajuraho to Jhansi and then took a cab to Orchha.

How to reach Orchha from Jhansi?

You can take a private auto or cab from Jhansi to Orchha. A private cab will probably cost you around INR 500. Buses are also available from Jhansi bus stand to Orchha.

Getting Around Orchha

Orchha is a fairly small place and you can easily walk around to visit most of the attractions.

You can also get rickshaws and auto rickshaws to roam around the city. A short ride within the city will probably cost you INR 100 to 200.

You can also rent bicycles and bikes (scooty as well) in Orchha and explore the place.

Places to Visit in Orchha

Now that you have reached this beautiful town, let us find the places to visit in Orchha. Apart from Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, the entire town is within a radius of 5 km and you can easily plan your trip in 2 days. There are monuments scattered everywhere across the small town. Most of these are a mixture of Bundeli and Muslim architecture. There are also fortified gates or Darwazas marking the limits of the town.

While you can definitely jump from one monument to the other, do the touristy thing of taking insta-worthy photographs, the best way to explore Orchha is to savour the place. While you think about how many days you want to spend in Orchha, here is a list of the must visit places in Orchha.

1. Orchha Fort Complex – Amazing Places to visit in Orchha

The Orchha Fort Complex is perhaps the grandest structure in Orchha town. This is one place that you will not miss even if you wanted to. The Orchha Fort Complex dominates the skyline of the town containing a large number of monuments that includes palaces, gateways, gardens, stables, temples and pavilions.  

The fort is protected by a thick wall and has four main palaces – Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal and several other smaller, but impressive structures. The Sheesh Mahal that has now been converted into a boutique hotel. The Betwa River acts as a moat on one side having an arched bridge connecting over the river. Various structures in the complex have been built at different times by various rulers, something that is seen in most of the historic monuments of India. There are plenty of intricate archways, colourfully painted murals, chambers and passageways in the huge Orchha Fort Complex.

Walking around the grounds of the palace area is free. However, if you want to enter Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and some other monuments, there is an entry fee.

This is the first place you enter after getting the tickets. This part of the complex was built by Madhukar Shah in the seventeenth century. The design has been inspired by the Mughal courts, the hall was used by the King to meet the public and deal with matters of administration and justice.

The main highlight of this hall are the beautiful paintings on the vaulted ceilings and the walls. Just look up and you will see some amazing examples of Bundela style paintings.

Once leaving Diwan-e-Am, you will enter the Raja Mahal, or the King’s Palace. The construction of Raja Mahal was started in 1531 by Bharti Chand and it served as his private residence. The inner courtyard, perfectly square in shape, was the first part of the palace to be built. The rooms around the courtyard served as private quarters for the royal family. You will see these rooms are painted in Bundela style.

The main highlight of the Raja Mahal are perhaps the vibrant Bundela styled paintings in the six rooms around the courtyard. There are paintings of the Avatars of Vishnu as well as episodes of Ramayana. Other beautiful paintings are found on the wall as well.

There is a second courtyard at the far side and the rooms there also have several beautiful and unique paintings. It is difficult to see the paintings first, but once your eyes are used to the light you will see how impressive the paintings are.

Another rectangular courtyard was added by Madhukar Shah, brother and successor of Bharti Chand. This time, the architectural style was slightly different, perhaps influenced by Mughal architecture. That is why you will see that there are different types of arches at Raja Mahal.

There are staircases to take you to the upper levels and there are five storeys in total. From the upper levels you can look down at the courtyard and the other fort complex surrounding you. It is from here, you get a view of the towering Chaturbhuj Temple and the Cenotaphs.

Once you have explored and head out of the Raja Mahal, climb up a few steps to reach the Jahangir Mahal.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal is perhaps architecturally the most impressive building in the Orchha Fort Complex. It was built in 1610 having a single huge courtyard. The architecture of Jahangir Mahal has both Hindu and Islamic elements.

Jahangir Mahal was built by King Bir Singh Deo to commemorate the visit of emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The place seems to have been used as a guest house and for entertainment. The main entrance was decorated with two stone carved elephants with a bell. The palace has three storeys with 236 chambers.

You can climb up to the upper levels and marvel at the cupolas, domes, pavilions, balconies and the ornate windows. Look around and you will only find brilliance and beauty. From the upper levels you will also get a view of the other buildings and if you look a little far, the Betwa river will also be seen.

Other Structures

Within the Orchha Fort Complex, there are several other structures. One of the interesting structures is the Unth Khana or the camel stable.

A short distance from here is the Rai Praveen Mahal. This was built in the sixteenth century and is named after Rai Praveen, a famous courtesan known for her beauty. The upper levels of the buildings have paintings of Rai Praveen.

Entry Tickets: INR 10 for Indian tourists and INR 250  for foreign tourists. Camera charges are INR 25 for still cameras and INR 200 for video cameras.

2. Chaturbhuj Temple – Places to visit in Orchha

While the Orchha Fort is no doubt fascinating, it is the Chaturbhuj Temple that steals the show. Located right in the heart of Orchha, the temple dominates not only the skyline, but also the heart of the town. Built on a high plinth, with impressive spires of various sizes that seem to reach out to the sky. The temple is mammoth, huge and magnificent.

There is an interesting story behind this temple. Historically, the construction of the temple started in 1558 by Madhukar Shah for his Queen Rani Ganesh Kunwari. The construction of the temple was completed by his son Bir Singh Deo.

Legend of the Queen

Legend says that one night Rani Ganesh Kunwari was a devout follower of Lord Rama. One night, she had a divine dream from Lord Rama, instructing her to build a temple for him. The queen was instructed to visit Ayodhya and bring the idol of Rama with her to Orchha. The only condition was that Lord Rama was to be brought from Ayodhya to the temple in one go. Once he was laid down, he would not move from the place.

The queen, with all her devotion went to Ayodhya and brought an idol of Lord Rama with her to Ayodhya. However, the construction of the temple was not yet completed (which is quite understandable) and so the idol was placed at the Rani Mahal, adjacent to the main palace. After the construction of the temple was completed, several attempts were made to move the idol of Lord Rama to the new temple. But the Lord simply refused to move!

Apparently Lord Rama remained in the Rani Mahal itself leaving the Chaturbhuj Temple vacant. The Rani Mahal was converted to Ram Raja Temple and the Rama idol is actively worshiped there even till date.

The Chaturbhuj Temple now houses the idol of Radha-Krishna.

Interiors of the Temple

The interior of the temple is 105m high and is as impressive and elegant as its exteriors. Today the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Chaturbhuj, or the one having four arms. Architecturally, the temple is built in a cross shape representing the four arms of Vishnu.

Having explored the ground levels, you can go up to the upper galleries of the temple. The winding staircases are a bit dark and after climbing some flight of steps with crumbling masonry, you will reach the roof of the Chaturbhuj Temple. The views are, as usual, awesome; with all the major and smaller monuments of Orchha in front of you.

3. Ram Raja Temple – Places to Visit in Orchha

If the Orchha Fort speaks of architectural brilliance and the Chaturbhuj Temple the magnificence of Orchha, then Ram Raja Temple is undoubtedly the heart of Orchha. Ram Raha temple is one of the interesting places to visit in Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king and not as a God. It is here you will see that police are designated to guard the temple and they give daily gun salutes to the deity. It is absolutely fascinating.

The temple does not look like any other temple. It is a rectangular building with four towers. It is because Ram Raja Temple is originally the Rani Mahal or the palace of Queen Gansh Kunwari. Just go through the local legend about the Chaturbhuj Temple in the section above to know more about it.

One of the best times to visit Ram Raja Temple is during Ram Navami when local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to sing songs and hymns in praise of Lord Ram.

Located on a hilltop about 1 km from the Orchha town, what catches attention in Laxmi Narayan Temple is its unique architecture. The building has a blend of temple and fort architecture, something I have not seen in a single building. The fortified outer walls of the temple is square and is flanked by octagonal towers. The inner sanctuary is however triangular. Indeed, a unique architecture. And there is a huge high domed octagonal tower above the inner sanctuary.

The exterior of the building was undoubtedly impressive. But what captivated me entirely was its interiors. The interiors have some very beautiful murals and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Episodes of Ramayana, Mahabharata and even episodes from Indian history were painted. There are also paintings depicting scenes of the 1857 uprising.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is absolutely beautiful. The walk of 30 minutes from the Chaturbhuj Temple was completely worth it.

5. Chhatris, the Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha

The Chhatris of Orchha or the royal cenotaphs are one of my favourite places to visit in Orchha. Constructed in the honor of the rulers of Orchha on the banks of Betwa River, the Chhatris are the highlight of Orchha. There are 15 Chhatris in total of the Bundela kings and their families.

These Chhatris are the memorials and have been built on the spot where the royals were cremated. The monolithic Chhatri dedicated to Raja Bir Singh Deo is one of the finest among the rest.

The entrance of the chhatris faces the River Betwa. A few meters away is the significantly smaller chattri of Kirpa Ram Gaur, who was the military commander during the time of King Bir Singh Deo. This is the only Chhatri here that belongs to someone not from the royal family.

The Chhatris are a wonderful set of monuments and also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Orchha. The best place to watch the sunset is from the narrow bridge near the Chhatris. From there you can see the falling rays of the sun on the monuments giving them a golden hue. You can also go on the other bank of Betwa River for a great sunset view.

Entry Ticket: The entry to the Chhatris is included in the ticket for the Orchha Fort Complex. So keep the ticket properly.

1. watch the sound and light show.

The Sound and Light show takes place in the courtyard of Orchha Fort Complex. The show is organized every evening for one hour both in English and Hindi language. The Sound and Light Show in Orchha brings to life the 500 years old history of the place. It narrates the discovery of Orchha, the rise and fall of kings, battles and romances and various stories of the royal household. It also throws an insight into the Bundelkhandi architecture, paintings and culture.

If you are fond of Sound and Light shows, then Orchha Sound and Light Show should definitely be on your list.

2. Go for River Rafting at Betwa River

If you are looking for adventure, then go for river rafting at the Betwa River. The rafting begins at Kanchan Ghat and takes place at a 3.5 km stretch along the Orchha town to Shiv Ghat. The river is generally calm, but there are a few rapids (Grade I/II). There is another option for 6 km of rafting.

Once you start from the Kanchan Ghat, you will see the Chhatris or Cenotaphs first. After crossing the low lying Orchha Bridge, you will come across the Chaturbhuj Temple and several smaller temples. Rafting at Betwa combines adventure with history as you watch the historic monuments of Orchha while tackling the rapids. It is undoubtedly a wonderful experience.

3. Jungle Safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

Lying on the banks of River Betwa, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across an area of 45 square kilometers. While you can spot Chital, Sambar deer, Nilgai and several reptiles inside the sanctuary, the place is more known for its birds. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to as many as 100 species of birds. This is a good place for nature hiking and walks.

Location: 1 km from the cenotaphs. You have to cross a narrow bridge over the Betwa river.

4. Join a cookery Class

What is the Best Time to Visit Orchha?

The best time to visit Orchha is the winter months between October to March. The weather remains pleasant from the beginning of October and stays the same till March.

Another good time to visit is during the Ram Navami Festival that usually takes place in April. During this time, a lot of devotees travel to Ram Raja Temple in Orchha.

The monsoons are also a good time to visit Orchha if you can handle the rains. The monsoon brings out freshness to the town and the lush greenery is pleasant to the eyes. The monsoon season is between mid-July to September.

Try to avoid the summers as it gets quite hot and sunny during the summers.

If you are someone who enjoys a laid back ambience and small towns, then Orchha is definitely quite a great place to visit. There are many interesting places to visit in Orchha that are rich in history and heritage. There are palaces, forts and temples of elegant architecture that are definitely worth visiting.

Orchha is known for its temples, mainly the Ram Raja Temple, the temple dedicated to Lord Rama. It is also famous for its architecture and heritage, having monuments and buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th century.

Orchha, a small town situated on the banks of Betwa River has several historic palaces, forts and monuments. While you can explore the major attractions of Orchha in a day, it is recommended to spend at least 2 days in Orchha.

Majestic Orchha

Exhibiting the wonderful Bundela-era legends, Orchha remains steadfast as the major historical site that has maintained the culture and legends of the rulers of the Bundela dynasty. Chieftain Rudra Pratap Singh founded Orchha on a piece of land along the Betwa river. This amazing town will fascinate you during your adventure, as it is a perfect destination to tour with friends and family. There are so many historical places to visit in Orchha and it is well connected to almost all the major towns of Madhya Pradesh.

Places To Visit in Orchha

Rudra Pratap Singh, the Rajput king of Orchha, started the construction of the Raj Mahal during the 16th century. However, the work of completing the structure was eventually taken up by the successors of Rudra Pratap Singh, the most popular of whom was Madhukar Shah.

It is a square structure in which two wings have five floors on three sides and four floors on one side. The bedrooms of four queens are constructed to the right of the Private audience's hall. The Cabin of the emperor is at the front, at the same level as the Sanctum of the Chatturbhuj Mandir. The ceiling of the royal chamber has been delicately painted with vibrant colours. Many other paintings, illustrating scenes from Ramayana and the glory of Bundela Court are hung on the walls of the palace. Beautifully stone-carved grills give the palace a majestic royal look and the angle shaft allows natural air and light continuously flow through the rooms. There are parts of the palace which have been converted into a Heritage Hotel called Sheesh Mahal, open for the tourists to stay while they explore the sites of Orchha. The interior of the palace is decorated with fragments of mirrors and includes lavish royal accommodation. These marvellous architectures stand tall inside the Orchha fort complex and enthrall its visitors.

Laxmi Narayan Temple

The history of the temple goes back to the Bundela dynasty. This temple is a square structure built by King Veer Singh Deo in 1622. The outer walls of the temple have the window like carvings and they are topped with battlements. The courtyard is surrounded by walls with galleries that run throughout them and are open to the sky. A hall is located in front of the octagonal sanctum in the centre of the courtyard. The murals that cover the galleries and vaulted roofs are the most artistic feature of the Laxminarayan Temple. The temple has some beautiful paintings on the upper part of the walls. The subjects of the paintings are particularly unusual than that of other paintings in the temple. While some of them illustrate episodes from the Ramayana, and of Lord, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, others depict mythical, martial and secular scenes. There is an outstanding painting of the 'Chungi Chirya', the giant bird that could fly high with an elephant in its claws.

There are fifteen cenotaphs honouring the Bundela kings and other members of their family on the right bank of the Betwa River in the south. The platform on which the chhatris rise as well as the sanctum are square in shape. The cremated remains of the royal princes and princesses are kept in the sanctums. A marble statue of Madhukar Shah and his wife with a painted canopy can be found in the first chhatri. The last chhatri in the line that can be seen from the riverbank is precisely square in structure which is built to honour Veer Singh Deo.

Chaturbhuj Temple

The design of the temple is unique in terms of architecture when compared to other structures in Orchha. The dome of the temple is not ribbed but smooth like that of a mosque. The court of the temple is open to the sky and it also has rising towers resembling the Chhatris of the Bundelas. There is a statue of four armed, that is Chaturbhuj, Vishnu inside the temple. It stands on a pedestal which gives the statue a majestic appearance.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal was built in the 17th century by the Bundela ruler, Veer Singh Deo. It was constructed to honour the first visit of Emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The entry of the palace is marked with a traditional and aesthetic gate. The east-facing front wall of the palace is covered with turquoise tiles. At the entrance, two stone elephants greet you with a bell that marks the entry of the King of that period.

It is believed that this palace is the epitome of Indo-Islamic architecture. The domes have engravings of external ribs which contrasts with the internal carving of the Islamic style. The brackets of the windows are made in a wavy style, following Jain architecture. It is impressively decorated with light-coloured ceramic tiles. This three-storied building has some amazing sculptures, beautiful balconies, Chhatris and beautifully carved-topped domes that reflect its architectural brilliance.

Shri Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as the King rather than a god. It is also known as Orchha Temple. Shri Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is beautifully painted in hues of white, pink, and yellow.

The legend behind the temple is as vivid as its walls.Madhukar Shah Ju Dev, the ruler of Orchha, was a follower of Lord Krishna, while his wife, Queen Ganesh Kunwari, was a follower of Lord Rama. The Queen once refused the King's request to accompany him to Braj-Mathura because she preferred to go to Ayodhya. The King insisted and invited her to follow him. However, the Queen declined. The monarch was annoyed over this and instructed her to return only when she would be bringing Lord Rama along. When the Queen arrived in Ayodhya, she began to pray to Lord Rama, but the lord did not show up. She finally jumped into the Saryu River at midnight out of desperation. In response to the Queen's prayers and devotion, Lord Rama manifested himself as a child in her lap.Three conditions were set forth by Lord Rama before he decided to leave, "I will travel exclusively in Pushya Nakshatra so that he reaches Orchha with sages; second, Once we reach Orchha, I shall be the King of Orchha; and third, the first place you seat me will be my final place to stay," lord instructed.

When the King came to know that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But in line with Lord Rama's requirements, he assumed the first position and sat down. Thus, the name Ram Raja Temple has remained attached to the queen's palace to this day. When the King learned that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But according to Lord Rama's conditions, he took the first place where he was seated. Thus, from that day to today, the queen's palace is known as Ram Raja Temple.

Orchha Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary is full of scenic beauty and picturesque landscapes. Spread over an area of 46 sq. km, the Bird Sanctuary has its significance due to its rich fauna, Betwa River and availability of some rare species of plants.

Rafting is quite popular among the adrenaline junkies who want to get a thrilling experience along with Orchha exploration. Best time to visit Orchha

Monsoon is the best time to visit Orchha and explore its architectural grandeur. The clouds in the sky and misty environment amplifies the visiting experience to the temples and the palaces. People also like to visit the city during winters but it is advisable to avoid a trip to Orchha during peak summers to stay away from scorching heat.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Gwalior airport situated at a distance of 142 km from Orchha. Prominent cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Jabalpur are connected by Air. The nearest International airport is in Delhi at 440 km.

By Train: Jhansi is the nearest railway junction from the Orchha at 17 km. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore and Ahmedabad is well connected to Jhansi by rail routes

By Road: The nearest bus stand is at Jhansi. Orchha is situated between Jhansi and Khajuraho and is linked via good National and State Highways. There are regular bus and taxi services from Jhansi to Orchha.

Looking for things to do in Orchha Madhya Pradesh? This small town is absolutely a must-visit on your next India trip and this guide has you sorted with the best places to see in Orccha. 

The town of Orchha is over 500 years old and is conveniently close to the city of Jhansi, from where you can easily catch trains all over India . The town is well known as a religious centre and for its historical monuments. 

Set on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is a great place to escape the crowds and see a quieter side of India.

I visited Orchha as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Abhaneri , Khajuraho , Varanasi and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

A day trip from Jhansi is an easy way to see Orchha, although I would recommend overnighting in the area so you can see more.

Best Things to Do in Orchha

1. orchha palace.

The Orchha palace, or Orchha Fort, is the number one place to visit in Orchha. Built by the Bundela dynasty, Hindu rulers of the princely state of Orchha from the 16 th  century.

The complex technically includes two major palaces as well as a bunch of smaller (but still impressive) outbuildings. It’s heavily fortified, with the river acting as a moat on one side, and outer walls covered in archer slits and elephant spikes.

The Raja Mahal was the residence of the kings and royal family and is richly decorated inside although simpler outside.

The Jahangir Palace was built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who sadly only visited once. It’s a stunning combination of Indo-Islamic architecture with countless arches and intricate carvings.

You can climb to the upper levels of the Jahangir Palace to get great views over the palace courtyard and surrounding area. Although don’t try this if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility issues as there are no barriers on the balconies and the steps are very steep.

We hired a local guide from the fort office to explain the history of the complex and I’d definitely recommend this as you learn a lot and there are very few signs to tell you what you’re looking at.

Current guide fees are displayed at the ticket office and are typically a few hundred rupees dependent on group size.

Entry is only around 12rs although you will have to pay extra to take cameras in (smartphones are fine).

The complex is open 8 am to 5 pm but subject to change on holidays.

2. Orchha Temples

Orchha is well known as a Hindu religious hub and particularly for its devotion to Rama, the god who is worshipped as a king (Ram Raja) in Orchha.

There are two main temples in Orchha, the Ram Raja temple which is newer and used for puja ceremonies throughout the day, and the older Chaturbhuj Temple which does technically have an operating shrine but is not used for mass worship.

These temples were built by a previous king and queen of Orchha for their respective favourite deities, with the Ram Raja temple being a converted palace.

Visitors can attend prayers at the Ram Raja temple which is absolutely a must do as the energy here is incredible, creating a very powerful experience. Just remember to remove your shoes, dress (and behave) conservatively and leave room for worshippers.

You can also climb the stairs up to the Chaturbhuj Temple which features panoramic views over the fort, cenotaphs, and surrounding countryside. There is a small shrine to Vishnu at which visitors can make offerings and ask for blessings.

3. Orchha Chattris

Chattris are tombs similar to Western cenotaphs but these monuments are unlike any grave or memorial you would find elsewhere in the world. These memorialise different kings of the Bundela dynasty, who also built the Orchha fort.

Set in a large garden and surrounded by flowers in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, this is the most peaceful spot in Orchha to explore and is especially brilliant at sunrise or sunset.

There are four large chhattris and ten smaller ones. Each chattri is a multi-storey building, largely hollow with rows of arches that you can walk between and glimpse the river through. They are topped with domes, some short and rounded and others tall and pointed to mimic the Himalayas. This makes for awesome photos!

4. Saket Museum

This museum, next to the Ram Raja temple, is easy to miss but a must-add to your list of places to visit in Orchha.

The museum is small, but it has some beautiful artworks from all over India representing the stories of Lord Ram in markedly different artistic styles.

The main attraction at the museum is the life-size statues of the gods, brightly coloured and made of fibreglass.

5. Betwa River rafting

As Orchha is built around the river, getting out on the water is a great way to see a different side of the town and a very different experience to your typical sightseeing.

There are a couple of companies offering rafting trips, generally one-way starting from just past the main bridge with jeep transfers back to your starting point. The easiest way to book is to call ahead. 

Expect to pay anything from 200-2500rs per person depending on inclusions (ie hotel transfers, lunch). 

The river is fairly calm but there are some rapids (Grades 1/2) to keep things interesting. And the water is much cleaner than elsewhere in India so if you end up falling in it’s not the end of the world.

6. Rajni Cooking School

Learning to cook some Indian cuisine is a must-do on your trip and there is an opportunity to do this in Orchha with Rajni Cooking Classes.

Rather than a hands-on school with an industrial kitchen, these classes are hosted by a local woman in her family’s home. While you can help out with making dishes, the classes are mostly a demonstration. 

Each class typically starts with masala chai and can include 10+ dishes, depending on group size. And yes, you do get to eat them all at the end!

There is no schedule or online bookings so the best way to organise a class is to make a request via the Facebook page .

Like all Indian towns, Orchha has a main street full of small shops and market stalls. The area around the Ram Raja temple in particular, is full of stalls selling both tourist souvenirs and religious paraphernalia like garlands and ribbons.

The shopping here is good, considering the size of the town and provides a calmer alternative to the larger markets in the big cities. You do still need to bargain hard though!

I found most shops sell similar goods of relatively cheap quality but found some great bargains on clothing.

Orchha Tours

There are very few options available for scheduled guided tours to Orchha, especially for foreign visitors. However, you can easily organise a private driver to take you around, make enquiries at Jhansi station.

How to get to Orchha from Jhansi

Orchha is only 20km from the city of Jhansi which is the closest transport hub. 

The best way to get to Orchha from Jhansi is by hiring a taxi which are easiest to find at the train station.

The drive takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and can cost anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand depending on your bargaining skills.

There is technically a local train that runs between Jhansi and Orchha however it stops quite a way out from the main attractions and accommodations so it’s not a great option if you have baggage with you.

Orchha Itinerary

If you are doing an Orchha day trip from Jhansi, I’d recommend focusing on the palace and two main temples. 

If you have another day, try getting up early to see the cenotaphs (chattris) at sunrise then head out for a bit of river rafting. Hit the markets for some food and a bit of shopping.

Where to stay in Orchha

Like most of regional India, there are no chain hotels and most accommodation is small family-run ‘hotels’ that are very basic however there are 2-3 higher quality options aimed at foreign tourists. 

Luxury: Amar Mahal Hotel – Mahal means palace and this place truly does look like one, right from the front gates

Mid-range: Orchha Resort –this is a mass-market tourist option but offers all the more comfortable touches like a pool, spa and buffet that are less common elsewhere

Budget: Hotel Ganpati – a friendly family-run spot with river views and basic but clean rooms

A tip for Indian accommodation: you get what you pay for so if something looks like a great deal don’t expect it to be as good as the pictures. Things like wifi, AC and hot water may be advertised but not actually working.

Frequently asked questions on Orchha

While peak tourist season in India is from November to February and has the coolest temperatures, you’ll find the place quieter and get even better deals if you come slightly before or after. I last visited Orccha in October which had good weather (hot and humid but manageable with some cooling drizzle). 

While there are many attractions in Orchha, the town is most famous for its fort/palace, closely followed by the temples of Ram Raja and Vishnu.

This really depends on how much you like to cram into a day and how many of the things to do in Orchha are of interest to you. Most people only do a day trip, but I would say overnighting (2 days) is ideal.

Awesome Things to Do in Orchha, India: Ruins, Temples and Palaces

Unless you’re researching a trip to India (or you’re from there), you probably haven’t heard of Orchha. This small town in Madhya Pradesh, around five hours from Agra, features an array of historic wonders, including palaces, temples and mysterious riverside chhatris.

Seeing the Chhatris at Sunset

The huge, temple-esque chhatris are memorials to the past rulers of Orchha. These massive structures on the edge of town melt into the lush countryside — seeing them bathed in the late afternoon sun is something I’ll never forget. It was such a special place that I proposed to Gia there on our last night in Orchha. You can walk inside the chhatris but we could only find a way to climb up the smallest one. I’ve seen some great photos of the chhatris from the other side of the Betwa River but heavy monsoon rains washed away the bridge just before we visited.

Orchha, once the capital of one of central India’s most powerful kingdoms, was founded in the early 1500s. Orchha means “hidden”, and that name still rings true today. There were only a handful of people wandering around the chhatris at sunset, in fact most sights in Orchha were almost completely devoid of other tourists. I can’t believe how quiet Orchha is given its close proximity to Agra (AKA Taj Mahalville).

Jehangir Mahal

The fort complex, which houses two impressive palaces, dominates downtown Orchha. We bought our Orchha tickets (250 INR for foreigners, good for all the sights in town) and headed straight for Jehangir Mahal. Dozens of small pavilions and arches surround the massive inner courtyard of this 17th century palace. We stayed there for ages, happy to be quietly immersed in such a beautiful piece of history. It’s worth seeking out some of the original turquoise tiles scattered around the palace and you can also see great views over the ruins-laden countryside. We walked around Jehangir Mahal for an hour or so and then moved on to the Raj Mahal.

Almost the entire palace opened up before our eyes upon entering the inner courtyard of the Raj Mahal. The structure crams in an unbelievable amount of little arches — it’s fascinating to see and would have been even more amazing in its 17th century prime. We climbed up various narrow staircases and walked along paths with no railings to keep people from falling down to the courtyard below. This definitely isn’t a place for small children who like to wander!

There are some colorful treasures lurking inside some of the Raj Mahal’s hallways. These ancient paintings have been really well preserved — it’s some of the best palace art that we saw in India. You’ll need a guide to decipher them, but some things are probably best left to the imagination.

Chaturbhuj Temple

This ancient Hindu temple in the centre of Orchha is a popular hangout for locals. Apparently the views from the top of the temple are worth the climb but we couldn’t find a way up there (and no locals offered to guide us up). Chaturbhuj temple is surrounded by market stalls and sits next to the Ram Raja temple, an important Hindu site.

Rural ruins

Orchha is a tiny town and you’re never far away from the countryside, which happens to be teeming with ruins. The Camel Stables (a building which may or may not have housed camels) is worth seeking out. We saw lots of little ruins on the short walk from the palaces to the stables. We then headed past another small palace on the way to a temple where dogs and cows roamed around the crumbling walls and narrow passageways. There is so much to see in the countryside outside Orchha — we didn’t come close to discovering it all.

Orchha Travel Tips

• Where to stay in Orchha: There are plenty of cheap hotels in Orchha, but if you’re looking for something a bit special you should head to Amar Maha l . This luxurious haveli style hotel makes you feel like you’re sleeping in a palace. The property is full of beautiful arches, paintings and seating areas, and you can also see views of Chaturbhuj temple and the chhatris. • Getting to Orchha:  Most people arrive on a train or tour bus from Agra. The trains stop at Jhansi, where you can catch a rickshaw to Orchha (200 INR, or 20 INR for a crowded shared rickshaw). If you’re travelling from Agra to Orchha make sure to stop off in Gwalior to see the fort, palaces and Jain sculptures. From Orchha we travelled by train (via Jhansi) to Khajuraho, the next logical step when travelling east to Varanasi and Kolkata.
• Where to eat in Orchha: We ate excellent butter chicken at Amar Mahal and some great thalis at Betwa Tarang Restaurant. They were so good that we didn’t bother eating at any other restaurants.

As per the mythology, Shah Jahan tried to weaken the kingdom of Orchha by creating jealousy among two brothers (Hardoul and Jhujhar). Hardoul was accused of an extra-marital affair with his brother’s wife. She was then asked to prove her innocence by giving poison to Hardoul. 

Later, their sister sought assistance for her daughter’s marriage and that’s when Jhujhar referred to Hardoul. It is believed that Hardoul appeared on the wedding day and served the bridegroom. Locals always place the wedding cards to take off any evil from the couple. The palace stands as evidence of Hardoul’s honesty and love for his family.

12. Sawan Bhadon Pillars

Orchha is full of stories that take you to the tales of the bygone era. Sawan Bhadon Pillars are also one of them! It is indeed one of the interesting places to visit in Orchha. These pillars are named after the Hindu months – Sawan and Bhadon. Considered as brothers, it is believed that pillars hug each other during special occasions.

The pillars were constructed as a part of the cooling system. It is one of the perfect examples of Persian architecture. Serving as great structures of ventilation, you get an opportunity to witness the construction and science behind it. The lower part was connected to a reservoir while the upper part generated wind. The Best Things to See and Do in Orchha, India

The Ram Raja Temple has an intriguing history behind its formation. Legend says that idols of Lord Rama were to be installed in the Chaturbhuj Temple, but as the temple was under construction, the idols were kept inside the queen’s palace for the time being. Afterwards, when people tried to shift the idols, they refused to move. That’s how this part of the Raja Mahal became holy and was constructed into a temple. It is the one and only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king, hence it’s called the Ram Raja Temple. The temple is specially guarded by police, and to honor the king (Lord Rama), gun salute is given every day.

Revel in the history of Rai Praveen Mahal

Rai Praveen, the Nightingale of Orchha, was a famous singer and poet in the court of king Indrajit Singh. In admiration and honor of her art, the king built this beautiful palace, which came to be known as the Rai Praveen Mahal. The palace has great architecture with beautiful carvings all around, and also the second floor of the palace has numerous picturesque scenes of Nritya Mudra, which are the poses and postures of Indian dance. Rai Praveen Mahal also has a Tope Khana or cannon foundry, which was used to guard the palace from any outside threat.

Stroll around the beautiful Phool Bagh

Phool Bagh is a garden complex that depicts the decorative architecture of the Bundelas. It has intricately designed fountains all around in an eight-pillar pavilion. The water gets collected in a large bowl called Chandan Katora; it is then supplied through the roof, making it look like rainfall. The garden initially served as a retreat for Orchha kings during summer. There’s a central memorial built for Prince Dinman Hardaul, who committed suicide in order to prove his innocence to this elder brother. If you get tired visiting the Orchha Fort Complex, Phool Bagh is where you can relax for a while.

Enjoy boating and rafting in Betwa river

Adventure junkies too can have a good time in Orchha. You can experience river rafting and boating in Betwa river. Rafting in Betwa starts from the boat club, for which tickets are arranged at Hotel Sheesh Mahal and Betwa Retreat by MP Tourism. The tickets cost INR 1,000 per person for one hour or depending on the number of rafts you take. A single raft takes approximately one to six people; so whether you go with family or friends, you can have a great time here.

The Chaturbhuj Temple was built during the rule of Gurjara Pratihara dynasty in 875 A.D. in dedication to Lord Vishn u . The literal meaning of Chaturbhuj is ‘one with four arms’. In Hindu texts, Lord Vishnu has been regarded as Chaturbhuj, hence the name of the temple. The temple has beautiful architecture which attracts a number of historians and archaeologists from around the world. The temple today also has idols of Radha-Krishna.

Nature trail in Orchha Nature Reserve

For those who love nature, flora and fauna, this 12-kilometer-long Orchha Nature Reserve can be an enriching experience. The reserve is the part of a 44-square kilometers wide river island which is surrounded by Betwa river and Jamni river. As a tribute to Bundelkhand’s great rulers, 14 Chattris surround the Kanchan Ghat of the Betwa River. These chattris are the tombs of Maharajas. 

They are raised on platforms and held up by pillars. Its unique building style and beautiful design make it an ideal place for tourist sites.

9. Chaturbhuj Temple – Places To Visit In Orchha

This temple was built by the Gurjara Pratihara kingdom in 875 AD. Lord Vishnu is honored in this temple. 

The building is tall and is built on a square base. This is a fundamental architectural construction. 

It has three main parts, and the one in the middle is about four stories tall. At first, this temple was for Lord Ram. But later, Lord Vishnu’s idols took over and made it their own.

10. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

• Tips – You can also try fishing, camping, canoeing, and jungle trekking within the sanctuary.

Chaturbhuj temple

• How to Reach – This famous temple is located opposite Orchha Fort, about 15KM from the city bus station. You can include this in your fort tour or take an auto or local taxi from the bus station to reach.
• Timings – 9AM-5PM
• Entry Fee – Free
• Time Required – 1-2 Hours
• Tips – Don’t miss the sunset views from the viewing point of the temple, for great views of the surrounding landscape.

Ram Raja Temple

• How to Reach – This famous temple is located within the Raja Mahal of Orchha Fort, and 15KM from the city bus station. You can take an auto or taxi from the bus station, or include this in your fort tour.
• Timings – 8AM-12.30PM, 5PM-10PM
• Time Required – Less than 1 hour
• Tips – Visit Ram Navami to experience the local traditions and celebrations.

Fort complex

• How to Reach – The fort complex lies within walking distance from the city bus station. You can easily walk through the city and cross the stone bridge on the river to reach the fort.
• Timings – 9AM-6PM
• Entry Fee – INR 10, INR 25 for the camera, INR 100 for light and sound show (INR 50 for children).
• Time Required – 2-3 Hours
• Tips – Don’t miss the light and sound show held every evening after sunset.

About Orchha

Orchha is a historical town in India , in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. It lies on the banks of the Betwa River , in the Niwari district, 15KM from Jhansi and 80KM from Tikamgarh . The town is flanked by a river on one side and the Betwa forest on the other, with rocky rolling hills on the outer edges. The Betwa River splits into seven smaller streams, locally called the Satdhara , which adds to the scenic natural beauty of the region.

A land sitting on a rugged but beautiful landscape, this historical kingdom is dotted with palaces, ancient temples, intricate classic architecture, world-renowned murals and frescoes. From its natural environment to the old-world charm , everything about this place attracts tourists and travellers of all kinds.

Orchha used to be a city of the royals in the 16th and 17th centuries, who left their architectural imprints in the numerous palaces, mansions, temples, and monuments. Some of them lie in ruins, while others are preserved by the MP Tourism Orchha as heritage sites . It rose to fame, mostly because of the Orchha Fort, which sits on a seasonal river island in the middle of the Betwa River . The massive palace fort is surrounded by a battlement wall and enshrines several buildings within, each constructed at a different time across history. Some of the most popular tourist places here like the Ram Raja Temple, Laxmi Narayan Temple, Jahangir Mahal , are examples of ancient Indian architectural wonder.

Orchha is said to be founded in 1531 , by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh , a Bundela chieftain. He turned the small settlement into the administrative capital of the eponymous princely state. He was the first king of Orchha and also the first one to establish the Orchha Fort . The Bundelas ruled most parts of central India from here as their seat of power for over 200 years . This was the most glorious time when there was a widespread investment in art and architecture, civic constructions and planning. Some traces of the past grandeur remain scattered across the town and in the neighbouring districts. When the Mughals acquired Orchha , they further added to the cityscape with their signature architecture , which only led to making this town a work of enchanting artistry.

How to Plan a Trip to Orchha

How to reach orchha.

Orchha has its railway station but there’s no direct rail connectivity to the town from other major cities. The nearest railway junction is in Jhansi , about 18KM away. You can take an auto, bus, or book a cab from Jhansi to reach here.

Orchha is well-connected by road to Jhansi, Gwalior , and other major cities in Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring states. There are regular state-run and private buses from Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Varanasi, Agra, etc. Jhansi is the nearest bus station. You can also book a cab or rent a private car from any of these cities to reach here via NH44.

There is no direct flight connectivity to Orchha. The nearest airport is in Gwalior , about 140KM away . The next closest airstrip is at Khajuraho Airport , about 143 away. From either of these places, you can book an airport taxi or hire a car to reach here.

Best time to visit Orchha

Being a landlocked town, and surrounded by a hilly plateau, the weather here is very dry. Summers are hot and harsh while winters are chilly but pleasant. Hence the colder months , between November and February , are the best time to visit when the temperature is comfortable to explore outdoors.

The temple was built by Vir Singh Deo around 1622 but inadequate maintenance brought down the magnificence of the temple. It was reconstructed around 1793 by Prithvi Singh and brought it back to its glory.

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh is a place of interest for people belonging to various fields. A history buff, a spiritually oriented person, a backpacker, an explorer or a person just wanting to have thrill and adventure while travelling, this place offers something for everyone. For people interested in architecture, the monuments are a treat. It shows a beautiful cultural blend of Bundelkhand and Medieval architecture and is greatly appreciated for its engineering work too. Places to visit in Orchha

Orchha settled on the banks of the river Betwa and was discovered by the Bundela Rajput King, Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century. It seems that the town is still dwelling in the grandeur of the past as the monuments here are fresh and still speak about the history they have witnessed and have imprints of all the former rulers, who have contributed immensely to the evolution of this place. 

Places to visit in Orchha include beautiful palaces and temples depicting mediaeval architecture , each narrating the story of their grand past of which they were once a part.

Orchha Fort Complex 

Orchha fort is a complex comprising many structures. Orchha fort complex overlooking the Betwa river sure paints a beautiful picture. It houses the fort, palaces, temples and other important architectural structures. 

The Orchha fort complex is different from the ones in Rajasthan like Kumbhalgarh or the ones in Maharashtra like Lohagad Fort . Rajasthan’s forts were built on Mewar architecture however this one is a blend of local Chandela , Mughal and Mediaeval architecture. It was built by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh and more features were added to it by its subsequent kings to beautify it. 

The fort of Orchha depicts the grandeur and stories of valour of Rajput Bundela Kings. One of the major tourist attractions in Orchha is the light and sound show which starts only after the fort is closed for visitors during both the summer and winter seasons. 

The sound of running horses in the background, the lions, war-like situations and the narration of Orchha’s glorious past take visitors deep into history, experiencing it today. It is operational in both Hindi and English languages and has different timings as per the season.  

Raja Palace 

Raja Palace forms a major part of the Orchha fort complex . As the name suggests, it is the main palace where the King and the Queens resided. It was constructed by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century and was later completed by King Madhukar Shah in the 17th century. 

The exterior of the palace is very simple and bare, however, the interiors are very lavish and grand. It is decorated with beautiful architectural designs and murals and has various theme-based works of art about the Gods, Mythical creatures and people. 

A part of this temple has been converted into Ram Raja Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram. As Lord Ram is worshipped here within the palace, this place is the only shrine of Lord Rama in the country where the Lord is worshipped as a King, making it to the list of important places to visit in Orchha.

Sheesh Mahal 

Places to visit in Orchha cannot be complete without visiting the Sheesh Mahal. Once a residential palace of Maharaja Udait Singh, King of Orchha, it was built to give the king a peaceful and private place to rest and retreat. Much like the palace of mirrors in Jaipur and Bhuj , this is similar and opulent. 

A part of this grand palace has also been converted into a modern-day hotel with all the lavish amenities and is accounted as one of India’s major Heritage Hotels. It has Deluxe, Super Deluxe and a Suite for the guests to enjoy the grandeur of a royal stay during their visit. It also helps to organise conferences and destination weddings at the hotel. 

Jahangir Palace 

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh is a place which speaks volumes of friendship and hospitality. The Jahangir palace was built during the 17th century, by Bir Singh Deo for the emperor Jahangir, his friend, on his maiden visit as a gesture of warm welcome. It’s an architectural marvel and is a three-storied structure built around a square with marvellous sculptures, hanging balconies and delicate chhatris . 

Palace depicts beautiful Indo-Islamic architecture and is marked by different courtyards, rooms, intricate balconies and domes. This palace marks evidence of a friendship between two rulers of different communities. It is now under the aegis of the Madhya Pradesh Archeological Department.

Raja Ram Temple | Orchha Temple

It is also known as the Orchha temple and is one of the oldest temples in India and is considered to be very sacred. Built-in the 16th century, this is the only place in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King and that too in a palace. A guard of honour is given to the Lord every day and police personnel are deployed as the guards of the King. The food provided to the Lord too is royal in nature. Armed salutation is given to the Lord every day. 

This Orchha temple was built by Raja Madhukar Shah for his queen Ganesh Kuwari. The legend says that Ganesh Kuwari went to Ayodhya to get an image of Lord Rama to enshrine in her new temple in Orchha. However, as the construction of the temple was not complete, the idol of the Lord had to be placed in the palace temporarily. 

When the construction got completed, the idol was to be moved to Chaturbhuj Temple however the idol refused to be removed from its place. As such, the palace was converted into a temple and Lord Rama was worshipped as King. Here, Lord Rama is sitting in Padmasana and spotting his left foot is considered to be very auspicious. This is amongst the unmissable places to visit in Orchha and one of its kind in India.

Chaturbhuj Temple

As the name suggests ‘Chaturbhuj’ means one who has four hands. This temple refers to Rama as an avatar of Vishnu . It was originally built to house an idol of Lord Rama which was brought from Ayodhya to be enshrined here. However, the idol refused to be removed from its place and hence Raja Rama Temple was built within the Palace. The image of Radha Krishna is worshipped here. 

Architecturally, this temple has tall spires in the shape of spine cones four in number resembling the four arms of the Chaturbhuj. It resembles the Basilica in its looks.

Royal Cenotaphs

The purpose of building cenotaphs is to remember and commemorate the great rulers of the Bundela dynasty who gave grandeur and magnificence to this place. 

These are fourteen of the kinds built on the bank of the river Betwa. They were built from the early 16th to 18th centuries. Here too like other structures the architecture is a fine blend of Mughal and Bundela (Rajput) styles and speaks greatly of the cultural influences of that time. 

These are built on a raised platform usually and designed as tall and square shapes with chhatris on the top. Orchha in Madhya Pradesh offers an enigmatic combination of history with spiritualism which marks it boldly on the tourism map. 

Laxmi Narayan Temple

It is built at a place around 2 km from the Orchha Fort Complex, this temple is dedicated to goddess Laxmi, who is the Hindu goddess of wealth. It was initially built by Maharaja Bir Singh Deo in the year 1622 however because of low maintenance it was in a bad shape. 

Later it was reconstructed by Maharaja Prithvi Singh in the year 1793. Like other monuments in Orchha, this temple too is an architectural beauty which is rectangular in shape and the walls depict beautiful paintings and murals. The themes of these paintings are mostly from the Ram Charit Manas and from India’s first struggle for independence in the year 1857. 

Phool bagh 

As the name suggests, Phool bagh is a garden which fascinates visitors with its greenery. It maintains all the aesthetics of the Bundela kingdom. 

It houses beautiful fountains in the centre of the place which has an amazing system of water ventilation and it keeps the area cool. There are two wind-catching towers which are named after the Indian months of Saawan and Bhaddon which are perforated on the top to catch air and the bottom of these towers are connected to the reservoir. The aeration and the water systems are such that it helps the area to cool and hence these are called the cooling towers of Orchha. These are the lone examples of the Persian system of cooling in India .

Rai Parveen Mahal 

Rai Parveen was a great poet and singer and was known as the ‘Nightingale of Orchha’. The palace has three stories and the central hall the palace has beautiful paintings showing the various moods of Rai Parveen. The architecture of the palace is such that it ensures cool temperatures even during heated summer days. It has been seen that the temperature inside the palace is said to be ten degrees lower than the outside temperature. Alongside the palace, there is a beautiful garden, also known as the Anand Mahal Bagh.

Orchha wildlife sanctuary .

Out of the many places to visit in Orchha, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary offers amazing opportunities for wildlife spotting, birding and photography. It was established in the year 1994 and lies within the area where the Betwa river flows. 

Compared to other wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh, this one is small, around 45 sq km. Wildlife enthusiasts may not be able to spot the big cats like Tigers and Leopards however animals like Jackal, Sloth Bear Nilgai and Blue Bull are among the most seen. 

There are around 200 species of birds including the in-house as well as migrant birds which can be seen here. One can spot peafowls, Swan, black swans, peacocks, Jungle bush quail and many more. 

Shahid Smarak of Chandra Shekhar Azad 

Orchha becomes relevant to this legendary hero as he spent a few days here during his days of exile and made a creditable contribution to India’s freedom struggle. It is situated around 4 km from Orchha and gives a comprehensive account of his life spent here.  

Rafting in Orchha 

Amongst all Orchha tourist places, which are bound by history and architecture, rafting gives a different experience and is meant for all the tourists and backpackers who are looking for some adventure during their trip. One can go rafting on the rapids of the Betwa river. There are many institutes in Orchha which arrange and facilitate rafting. Some names are Ram Raja Adventures and Orchha Adventure Camp.

Places to visit near Orchha 

Jhansi .

Located at around 13 km from Orchha and just half an hour’s drive, Jhansi town is well known for India’s struggle for independence. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi played an epic role in the freedom struggle. It was ruled by Chandela kings in the early 11th century and later was ruled by Peshwa I. Having importance in history, Jhansi houses a magnificent fort, beautiful gardens and Chhatris (Cenotaphs) of its rulers which forms an important part of sightseeing. 

Khajuraho 

The place is known for its beautiful sculptures on temples. There are around 85 temples here, each built in sandstone with various shades of pink, buff and yellow. Located at a distance of around 185 Kms from Orchha, this place is a must-visit for people who are connoisseurs of art.  

Gwalior 

Another historic town closeby to Orchha ka Kila is Gwalior which is located at a distance of 120 Kms or a two hours drive. Being the birthplace of the great Sangeet Samrat Tansen, this city not only boasts of royalty but also is rich in history and cultural heritage. It is famous for grand palaces, temples and a fort. The city has given many leaders in Indian politics like Late Shri Madhav Rao Sindhia and Jyotiraditya Sindhia.

Best time to visit Orchha 

Orchha has hot weather. The temperatures in summer can go up to 45/47 degree celsius making it very difficult and exhausting to go sightseeing.

From September, the temperatures begin to fall making it pleasant. These temperatures keep Orchha vibrant till the month of March. One can visit Orchha between these months.

Ideal months to visit are October and November when the temperatures are cool and the weather clear thus making it ideal for moving around places and sightseeing.

The nearest railway station to Orchha is Jhansi. It is one of the busiest and largest railway stations in India and falls under the main railway line of the Delhi-Chennai and Delhi-Mumbai Line.
