Grinnell College is a private institution that was founded in 1846. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 1,759 (fall 2022), its setting is rural, and the campus size is 120 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Grinnell College's ranking in the 2024 edition of Best Colleges is National Liberal Arts Colleges, #11. Its tuition and fees are $64,862.

Grinnell College is located in the small town of Grinnell, Iowa, halfway between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Despite its somewhat remote location, this "Little School on the Prairie" has a lot to offer. From the G-Tones a cappella group for music lovers to the environmental group Free the Plant for tree huggers, Grinnell’s 100-plus student organizations appeal to a variety of interests. Grinnell’s busy social scene makes up for its lack of Greek life with an array of cultural activities and concerts occurring weekly on campus, from big-name acts to small student groups. A well-known, annual event is the Titular Head Film Festival, which showcases student films. The Grinnell Pioneers compete in the NCAA Division III Midwest Conference. In fact, the Pioneers played some of the first intercollegiate football and baseball games west of the Mississippi. All students are required to live on campus in residence halls located on South, North or East campuses.

The school is known for its strong social activism, ranking top among schools of its size in sending volunteers to the Peace Corps. Grinnell’s social consciousness stems back to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, when several Grinnell graduates became influential New Deal administrators. Between 55 and 60 percent of students participate in study abroad programs during their time at Grinnell. Notable alumni include jazz musician and composer Herbie Hancock and Intel co-founder Robert Noyce, nicknamed "Mayor of Silicon Valley."

My daughter is at Grinnell. As someone who attended an Ivy, I can attest that the personalized attention and quality of teaching far surpasses anything that I experienced in my own undergraduate life. The community is fun-loving, open-minded, smart and hard-working. Bright kids with none of the pretense. Campus is justice-minded and full of opportunity. Huge endowment creates incredible options for students. High admission rates to top grad schools. Grinnell is one of the most underrated colleges in America — but those in the know, know.

Grinnell Team Joins Greater Des Moines Partnership for Annual DMDC Trip

Four people standing around books

Several representatives from Grinnell College and community organizations joined the Greater Des Moines Partnership for their annual “DMDC” trip May 8-10. This annual event unites regional leaders for networking and learning opportunities, facilitating connections with Iowa’s congressional delegation, the administration, and their staffs, while presenting economic development priorities as a cohesive group.

Nearly 200 attendees participated in the 2024 trip, representing the region’s businesses, governmental agencies, educational institutions, and non-profits. This year’s Grinnell team included Grinnell College President, Anne F. Harris , Chad Nath , CEO, Ahrens Park Foundation , Rachael Kinnick President, Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce , Gracie Brandsgard ’14 Director of Government, Law, and Policy Career Community, Office of Career, Life and Services, Grinnell College, and Sarah Smith Director of Outreach Programming and Events, Office of Community Partnerships, Planning, and Research, Grinnell College.

President Harris had the opportunity to address the entire group and attending legislative staff during the Congressional Leadership Luncheon, where she shared insights about Grinnell College’s role as a global college, in a rural setting, with a national voice. She highlighted that Grinnell students represent nearly all 50 states and 67 countries and that the College - recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the #11 Best Liberal Arts College in the nation - offers a “no loan” financial aid policy for all students making it possible to graduate without student loan debt. She also championed the partnerships between the college and the Grinnell community and what we have been able to achieve together. President Harris invited representatives from across the region to consider Grinnell as a place to ‘Meet in the Middle’ and experience all the college and community have to offer.

Rachael Kinnick expressed her enthusiasm about the trip, stating, “This annual event is a fantastic opportunity to join with other leaders in Grinnell and the Des Moines area to showcase the strengths and potential of our region. It's a privilege to highlight Grinnell's contributions and to foster connections that can drive our community forward."

Gracie Brandsgard '14 emphasized the value of the connections made during the trip. "Being able to engage with a diverse group of professionals and policymakers is incredibly beneficial," she noted. "These interactions open doors for our students and help us build a network that supports their growth and success."

Chad Nath emphasized the importance of these trips for the improvement of the community. "Participating in the DMDC trip allows us to enhance the dissemination of our message regarding the region’s potential," Nath expressed. "It presents a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with fellow changemakers to unify our initiatives that bring benefits to our communities."

Sarah Smith voiced the trip’s role in fostering collaboration and connection.  “Engaging with regional leaders and the federal delegations and their staff in Washington, DC helps us to bring new perspectives and ideas back to our community.” Smith noted. “It is an opportunity to strengthen our networks and enhance the initiatives that benefit Grinnell and the wider region.”

The trip concluded with participants leaving with future collaboration opportunities with leaders, the Iowa Delegation, and their staff.  As the region continues to thrive, Grinnell College stands poised to play a thoughtful and pivotal role in the area’s ongoing success.

Jeremy Youde joins PSU as Dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs

by University Communications May 23rd 2024 Share

Jeremy Youde

Portland State University named Jeremy Youde as the Dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA). Youde currently serves as Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will join PSU on August 8.

“Jeremy brings a proven track record of inclusive and transparent leadership, skillful change management, and an infectious enthusiasm for harnessing the power of higher education for the collective good,” said interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Shelly Chabon.  “His long history of applied, impactful research and robust local and global community engagement position him well for successful, mission-driven advocacy on behalf of CUPA faculty, staff, and students.”

Youde is a political scientist with a particular focus on the intersection between politics and global public health, having written eight books related to that topic. In addition to the University of Minnesota Duluth, Youde has held leadership and teaching positions at the Australian National University, Grinnell College and San Diego State University.

"I have long been a fan and admirer of the great work that CUPA does, and I am so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with the college's faculty, staff and students as its next dean,” Youde said. “The sorts of knowledge and understanding that CUPA produces are exactly what the world needs as we try to untangle the tricky issues facing society at all different levels."

Youde earned a doctorate and master of arts in political science from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in political science and global development studies from Grinnell College.

Chabon expressed her heartfelt thanks to Shawn Smallman, who has served as CUPA’s interim Dean throughout the current academic year. She also offered her deepest gratitude to the CUPA  Dean Search Committee which was chaired by Cliff Allen, Dean of the School of Business.

Youde is the third of six new deans who will be hired during the 2023-24 academic year.

One-third of Grinnell College power to come from solar energy with new solar array

One-third of Grinnell College's energy needs will come from solar power with the completion of a new solar array. (Photo courtesy of Grinnell College)

Grinnell College has made a “decisive step” forward in the direction of operating without emissions with the completion of a 9,000-panel solar array.

One-third of Grinnell College’s campus is now running on renewable energy with the array, the largest private solar installation in the state, Grinnell College President Anne Harris said. As Grinnell College reaches this milestone in its goal of hitting net-zero emissions by 2040, a community-wide solar project could have more than half of the university’s power come from renewable sources.

“This is a prime example of how knowledge and education moved through the institution out into the world at Grinnell,” Harris said.

GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX

A third-party developer, Sunlight General Capital LLC, owns the array, and Grinnell College has purchased all of the energy generated from it for the next 20 years, with the possibility of a 10-year extension.

The array, which Grinnell College environmental and safety manager Chris Bair said has been in operation for around one month, provides four megawatts of power that flows to almost every building on campus. There are six other smaller solar power stations utilized by the university, he said, which provide energy to buildings off of the main meter like the facilities building and environmental education center.

Each of the panels is double-sided, Bair said, allowing them to gather energy from reflected light like that off snow, and are able to follow the path of the sun from east to west to more efficiently absorb power.

Beyond the daily power the solar array provides, a battery connected to the system can store a certain amount of energy for when it’s needed. Bair said this will be most useful when the university’s energy usage is at its highest, like on a hot day in August with all of the air conditioning units on campus running constantly. The battery will help curb the peak, at least a little bit, helping save some money on the energy bill.

“When we know we’re in a hot day when we’re going to generate our likely peak for the month, we’ll start taking electricity from the battery and shaving that peak,” Bair said.

Renewable energy years in the making

Before Grinnell College began utilizing solar energy to power a large portion of its operations, Harris said the college board of trustees created the Fossil Fuels and Climate Impact Task Force in 2017 to explore how the university could fight climate change after students brought up concerns about fossil fuels.

Grinnell College made a sustainability plan in 2018 with the goal of having net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and through collaboration with students, campus environmental organizations, faculty and staff, including Bair, the university landed on solar power as the right fit to become more sustainable moving forward.

The array has been working smoothly so far, Bair said, with some tweaking still going on to fix small problems. It had been nearly complete mechanically for around a year, but further review and approvals from Alliant Energy were needed before the college could plug in. Bair got used to telling people “any day now,” with nothing coming of it.

“I drive by that site four times a day and those panels have been out for a long long time,” Bair said. “I’ve just been staring at them, and it was really frustrating, and now that it’s finally on it’s a big, probably more relief than anything.”

Another solar array project spearheaded by Alliant Energy and community partners will provide the university with an additional two megawatts of solar energy, Bair said, ensuring more than half of campus power will come from solar once it is up and running.

Array offers education opportunities

More than just a source of power, Harris said the solar array can also be a source of education and inspiration for Grinnell students. Those involved in the Grinnell College Student Environmental Committee, other organizations and certain classes have been a part of this process and the college’s overall efforts to become more sustainable, and future students will be able to learn about both the how’s and why’s of using solar energy.

Students will be able to take this knowledge elsewhere after graduation, Harris said, hopefully showing other communities in Iowa and beyond solutions for the future.

Grinnell College is one of many institutions with sustainability plans and practices, Harris said, and all universities should be thinking about solutions like these because they can make a tangible impact on more than just the campus itself, but the community that houses it.

“We are employers, we are neighbors, we are co-constituents of all these different communities,” Harris said. “And I do think that energy consciousness is a very palpable and real way that all colleges and universities can contribute to the … environmental well-being of the communities that they call home.”

Andrea Conner Appointed Marist College Vice President of Student Affairs

grinnell college campus visit

May 30, 2024 — Following a comprehensive national search, Marist College announced today the appointment of Andrea Conner as its new Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA), effective Aug. 1.

Andrea comes to Marist with 23 years of experience in student affairs roles of increasing responsibility, including the last 10 in the most senior student affairs role at her institutions. She has a proven track record leading comprehensive programs that elevate the student experience and support student success.

As VPSA, Andrea will report to President Kevin Weinman and serve on both the President’s Advisory Council and Cabinet, ensuring student success and excellent student experiences inform institutional planning, decision-making, and initiatives.

“Andrea joins Marist at a pivotal time,” President Weinman said. “Our strategic plan, Marist 100 , released last year, centers the student in all that we do, in and out of the classroom.  I’m confident Andrea’s vision, deep professional experience, and lifelong commitment to equity and opportunity will help us build upon the work of our dedicated, skilled professionals in Student Affairs and greatly enhance how we support the holistic well-being and intellectual growth of our students.”

Having worked at several residential liberal arts colleges, Andrea brings to Marist a strong background in institutional leadership and vision, strategic thinking, empathetic communication skills, student-centric advocacy, and the ability to build relationships across campus constituencies.

“I am honored and excited to be selected for this role and to be joining Marist at a time when the College is focused on ensuring that students thrive and belong by enhancing student support,” Conner said. “In collaboration with College leadership and the Student Affairs team, I'm excited to contribute to the Marist 100 strategic plan and our shared vision for an inclusive campus community where students meet their personal and academic goals. I look forward to working hard on behalf of the students and becoming part of the fabric of Marist.”

Andrea currently serves as Interim Senior Student Affairs Officer at Coe College in Iowa, a private liberal arts institution – and her alma mater – where she supervises Residence Life, Campus Life, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Chaplain, Health and Wellness, Student Conduct, and Title IX.

As the former Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., she partnered with the provost, faculty, and Center for Academic Success to foster a seamless learning environment and successfully advocated for programs and resources to help support student well-being.

Prior to her time at Lake Forest, she served as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Grinnell College, the most senior student affairs role at one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. There, she supported the college’s mission of educating a self-governing community of dynamic, social justice-minded students and led initiatives related to student learning, the first-year experience, gender-inclusive housing and the LGBT experience on campus, and equity.

Andrea holds a master’s degree in education from Iowa State University and a bachelor’s degree in music with a minor in theater from Coe College. This summer, she will relocate to the Hudson Valley from the Chicago area in advance of beginning her work at Marist.

The VPSA search was conducted by a campus-wide committee co-chaired by Sima Saran Ahuja, General Counsel, and Edward Antonio, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and involved a combination of students, faculty, staff, and trustees. This new VPSA appointment follows the recent retirement of Deborah DiCaprio, who dedicated 40 years of service to the College.
