‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Everything You Need To Know About the Upcoming CBS All Access Series

As the first new “Star Trek” television series in over a decade, “Star Trek: Discovery” has gotten a lot of attention since it was first announced in November 2015.

There have been production delays and some behind-the-scenes drama – specifically, the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller. But fans are now finally on the verge of actually getting to see the sci-fi drama in action — there’s even a premiere date, which means it’s really happening.

Below, here’s everything that’s been revealed to date about what to expect from the upcoming CBS All Access series, from when and where it launches to the producers’ groundbreaking narrative choices.

Season 1 Has a Complicated Release Strategy

The first episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” officially premieres on Sunday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS (the actual network). At that same time, the episode will also be available on demand and on CBS All Access, and CBS All Access subscribers will be able to watch the second episode as well.

The first two episodes, according to CBS All Access President and COO Marc DeBevoise, “set up [the show] like a movie. They will serve to create the foundation of the story line for the series.”

Yes, viewers will need to subscribe to CBS All Access to watch the show as a whole. “Discovery” will run for eight episodes this fall before “Chapter 1” (that’s what CBS is calling the first half) ends, with “Chapter 2” picking up in January 2018. Essentially, it’s the sort of split-season approach viewers have seen before with shows like “Breaking Bad.”

“Discovery” Has No Connection With Chris Pine

Sorry for the nerd moment, but the recent feature film revival of “Star Trek” technically exists in a different timeline from the established “Trek” television universe. The events of the 2009 film established that every time you see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto on screen, they’re part of what we call the “Kelvin-verse,” named after the spaceship destroyed in the opening minutes of the first film directed by J.J. Abrams.

“Discovery,” meanwhile, takes place 10 years before James T. Kirk became a Starfleet officer, but in the same timeline that “The Next Generation,” “Deep Space Nine,” and “Voyager” exist in. If this proves confusing, just think to yourself that movies and TV shows are different entities. Because, in this case, that’s true.

The Show’s Lead is a Female First Officer, and She’s Probably Met Spock

Meet Michael Burnham!

What we know about her so far: She’s human, and the “ward” of Ambassador Sarek (played here by James Frain), which means that she is technically the adopted sister of Sarek’s son Spock. The producers have been otherwise tightlipped on what Burnham’s relationship with Spock might be, beyond a “wait-and-see” messaging.

Burnham was raised on Vulcan, and considers Sarek a mentor. Her parents are dead, and Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) is another mentor figure.  At Comic-Con, it was also mentioned that she graduated from the Vulcan Science Academy (no easy task) and is a rising star in Starfleet.

Martin-Green’s availability was mentioned as a factor in the show’s delay in launching — executive producer Alex Kurtzman told critics that the casting process “was a tough search.  And, you know, you’re always hoping for the perfect person to walk in the door, and we really did not want to set out until we knew we had what we needed, and we saw Sonequa… We saw her work, and we went, ‘She’s the one.'”

Unfortunately, Martin-Green was committed to “The Walking Dead” at that time, so according to Kurtzman, “we felt that that was another reason to wait.  And so, we did.”

Here’s Why Burnham’s First Name is Michael

According to co-showrunner Aaron Harberts, the name “Michael” was selected because of Fuller. “We’ve worked on many shows with Bryan, and it’s a motif. It’s his signature move to name his lead women with names that would typically be associated as male,” he said during the Television Critics Association press tour.

“An archangel is named Michael as well, and it just had a lot of potency for us,” he added.

Martin-Green had a strong take on that choice, saying that “I appreciated the sort of statement it makes all on its own to have this woman with this male name… I also just decided for my creation and for my background and whatnot that I was named after my father.” If we ever see Burnham’s father in flashbacks, know that his name is theoretically Michael.

The Cast is Crazy Diverse Beyond Its Lead

“Discovery’s” supporting cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, James Frain, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo, Jason Isaacs, Kenneth Mitchell, and Rekha Sharma.

Many of these actors are non-white and/or playing aliens, such as Jones as Saru, who is a member of a new alien race called the Kelpien. Kelpians are very tall and apparently have hooves —  click here to see Jones demonstrate Saru’s very specific walk  during the Comic-Con panel.

Yes, The Klingons Look Different

“Discovery” features not just new alien species, but new takes on established races.  As IndieWire observed when the first trailer premiered , the physical representation of Klingons in “Star Trek” has never been consistent over the course of the franchise’s history, so it’s no surprise they look different yet again.

According to Harberts, the new look for the Klingons was deliberately driven by Fuller: “One of the things he really wanted to do was shake up the design of the Klingons, and one of the first things that he ever pitched to us when we were deciding whether or not to come on the show was his aesthetic for the Klingons and how important it was that they not be the thugs of the universe, that they be sexy and vital and different from what had come before.”

Harberts credited creature concept designer Neville Page and make-up department head Glenn Hetrick with working with Fuller on the Klingon design — it was just one of the elements that the producers pointed to as a sign that Fuller had had a lasting impact on the series.

“We honor what he did, and we love so much of what’s there, and much of what’s there… it came from his mind,” Kurtzman said.

“Discovery” Will Feature the First Gay “Trek” TV Romance

At Comic-Con, it was revealed that Rapp’s character, science officer Paul Stamets, would be in a relationship with the Discovery’s chief medical officer Hugh Culber, played by “My So-Called Life” star Wilson Cruz.

While the film “Star Trek Beyond” chose to reveal that Sulu (as played by John Cho) was in a committed relationship with a man, this is the first time a television series has not just depicted a gay character, but given him a fleshed-out romance. It’s one of the show’s most promising commitments to diversity.

This Is “The Most Serialized ‘Star Trek’ Ever”

According to executive producer Akiva Goldsman, “Discovery” will be more serialized than any other “Trek” series, and he held the first season of “Discovery” up against “Trek’s” previous experiments with ongoing storylines (most notably later seasons of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” which featured multiple examples of multi-episode arcs).

This goes beyond a shift away from “Trek’s” pre-established “mission of the week” format — it has lead to a fundamental change in the “Trek” ethos. Decades ago, “Trek” established a reputation in its writers room for the concept that its central characters should not be flawed characters, that they should instead represent the best that humanity might have to offer on a week-to-week.

There have been exceptions to this principle — witness “Deep Space Nine’s” revolutionary choices, as just one example — but “Discovery” will deliberately veer away from this famous “Trek” tradition, established by original creator Gene Roddenberry, who wrote in the original “Next Generation” series bible that the show was about characters who “have been selected for this mission because of their ability to transcend their human failings.”

Roddenberry’s directive meant that “Trek” characters were supposed to be “above” interpersonal conflict, but that’s a concept that “Discovery” will be veering away from, as a result of its new format. “It’s longform character storytelling. And without conflict, there is no longform character storytelling,” Goldsman said.

Also, In “Star Trek: Discovery,” We Are At War

When “Discovery” begins, things aren’t great  between the Klingons and the Federation, and thus the show will deal with some serious drama. “You know, war is the greatest conflict of all,” Martin-Green said, “It’s just about asking those deeply profound questions of “Who am I, and who are you, and how do I relate to you? How do we live with each other? How do we make acculturation a two‑way exchange, rather than me dominating you or you dominating me?”

Goldsman explained: “We are in a time of war, and we are trying to find out who we are as a Federation and as a coalition of peoples in the face of adversity.  So it is entirely the outcome role of the show to arrive at the principles — the utopian principles that I think are endemic to ‘Star Trek,’ and at the same time not to suggest that doing that is simple or easy. You can’t simply be accepting and tolerant without working for it, and so this show is about that struggle, and we are really insanely proud of that attempt on our part.”

“Star Trek” Will Always Be About Optimism, Even At Its Darkest Moments

Kurtzman mused that “Discovery” still aimed to pay true to classic “Trek’s” legacy. “I think the defining characteristic of Mr. Roddenberry’s universe is its optimism, as everybody on this panel has discussed, the belief that we can do better; the belief that we can connect; the belief that species and people around the entire galaxy can figure out a way to exist in the Federation; and that wars, if they have to be fought, can be stopped.  And we talk about that all the time,” he said.

Goldsman noted in regards to the show’s commitment to inclusion that “we take it really seriously. I mean, for us, ‘Star Trek’ is deeply meaningful. It doesn’t mean we are not going to tell stories that people who don’t like ‘Star Trek’ or have never seen ‘Star Trek’ won’t enjoy, but what you have up here is a lot of folks who can find a TV show [to be] wish fulfillment, can find it close to their calling.  It may sound absurd, but it’s true for us, and we are delighted about it.”

“Star Trek: Discovery” premieres on CBS All Access September 24.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ To End With Fifth Season In Early 2024 On Paramount+

The end is in sight for Star Trek: Discovery. Paramount+ said today that its longest-running original drama series will end with its upcoming fifth season, which will debut in early 2024.

Leading up to the final season, Paramount+ will honor the show’s groundbreaking storytelling over its past four seasons with yearlong celebrations and appearances at key events in markets around the world.

Star Trek: Discovery, which launched in 2017 , is a legacy show for Paramount+. It helped announce then-upstart streamer CBS All Access as its first commissioned original series . It also launched the Star Trek franchise on the streamer, which has grown to five current series. With Picard currently airing its final season , Star Trek: Discovery will be the final CBS all Access series to end its run on Paramount+.

CBS made waves in 2017 when Discovery , part of a storied franchise and one of its most valuable IPs, was sent to the company’s then in-the-works streaming service instead of the flagship broadcast network. Star Trek: Discovery did get a broadcast premiere on CBS before becoming a CBS All Access exclusive. Discovery then made a return to CBS in the fall of 2020, when Season 1 was used as contingency programming because of the pandemic’s impact on production.

“The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building,” Giles added. “This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure, and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”

Principal photography has just wrapped, but there will be come additional filming on the season, a source tells Deadline.

“As lifelong fans of Star Trek , it has been an immense honor and privilege to help bring Star Trek: Discovery to the world,” said executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise . “The ‘Trek’ universe means so much to so many – including us – and we couldn’t be prouder of everything Discovery has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation. If just one person sees themselves, or the possibilities for their future, in a new way because of Discovery, then we think we’d have made Gene Roddenberry very proud.”

Along with Martin-Green, the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 cast includes Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner).

“Of course, there would be no Discovery without Sonequa Martin-Green and the extraordinary team of artists, both in front of and behind the camera, who have brought this show to life. Their passion and determination to make every episode special has been deeply inspiring; so too has their love and support for one another and their genuine love for Star Trek ,” Kurtzman and Paradise continued.

Martin-Green made Star Trek history as the first Black woman to Captain a ship, with the show setting other major firsts in LGBTQIA+ representation on both Star Trek and in television in general.

“I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team,” said star and producer Martin-Green. “I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of ‘Trek’ with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans… 65 episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly… ”

As Discovery and Picard are coming to an end, there has been speculation about new series in the franchise as part of Kurtzman’s deal with CBS Studios. As we previously reported, a new offshoot,  Star Trek:  Starfleet Academy ,  is in development at CBS Studios and  Alex Kurtzman ’s studio-based Secret Hideout for the streamer. Also in the works is Section 31,  a Discovery spinoff that features the Emperor Philipa Georgiou character played by Michelle Yeoh. Current Star Trek series, in addition to Discovery and Picard , include Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

“When we first started talking about the return of Star Trek eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact Star Trek: Discovery would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors, Discovery honored Star Trek ’s legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.”

“To the fans around the world, thank you for joining us on this incredible journey,” Kurtzman and Paradise added. “We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on for this final season; we appreciate your patience in the meantime and trust us when we say it’ll be worth the wait. Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 6 “Whistlespeak”

It’s been a while since a Starfleet crew thoroughly discombobulated a native population, and that’s exactly what the Discovery crew does in this week’s episode.

After hundreds of tests on the vial Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) retrieved from the I.S.S. Enterprise , the crew learns it contains something incredibly… well, boring: clean water. But thanks to some sleuthing, there’s a much greater significance to the water than meets the eye.

You see, Doctor Kovich ( David Cronenberg ), at home in his white infinity, shares with Burnham a list of all scientists who were involved in hiding the Progenitor tech. With the clues hidden by Jinaal Bix, Carmen Cho, and Dr. Vallek already found, that leaves Hitoroshi Kreel, a Denobulan, and Marina Derex, a Betazoid. Burnham deduces the water vial is the product of Kreel, as the scientist’s specialty was designing weather towers to generate rain. Zora ( Annabelle Wallis ) helps Burnham, Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ), and Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) deduce the water in the vial is representative of one planet, Halem, so that’s where Discovery heads next.

First, let’s talk about Kovich, who the writers for this season are trying to seem even more mysterious than before. Kovich in this episode uses a 21 st -century legal pad to provide Burnham with the list of scientists, and claims he procured such an oddity by being “resourceful.” Just who is this guy? Hopefully, Kovich’s true nature will be revealed before the end of this show; we sincerely hope this character isn’t just quirky for the sake of being quirky, and that he plays a larger role in Discovery ’s overarching story.

Before transporting to the only weather tower still operating on Halem, the crew learns a bit about the native, pre-warp, pre-industrial population. The Prime Directive is in play here, as Kreel disguised the weather tower as a mountain to avoid exposing the natives to outsiders, and now Discovery’s crew needs to follow the same example. The tower functions as a place where Halem’nites go to commune with their gods, so accessing the mountain will be tricky.

The humanoids on Halem communicate both via traditional language, and “whistlespeak,” a form of communication that is inclusive, progressive, surprisingly articulate, and allows longer-range communications than traditional phonetic language. All signs point to the natives being a welcoming society.

After helping rescue and escort a group of Halem’nites from outside the weather tower’s safe perimeter into the habitable zone, Burnham and Tilly quickly incorporate themselves well enough into the motley local community as visitors from afar. The Starfleet pair soon enter themselves into a competition that judges who can gain access to the High Summit – a race to the water tower that serves as a test of devotion to the Halem’nites’ gods. Before the race, the pair also encounter a native, Ravah ( June Laporte ), daughter of the Summit’s priest, Ohvahz ( Alfredo Narciso ), and the young native befriends them despite also being a challenger in the race.

On the morning of the race, Burnham checks in with Discovery , where Ensign Adira Tal ( Blu del Barrio ) found other now-defunct weather towers across the planet. The other towers stopped working due to energy issues, and that’s what’s happening now with the High Summit, which means the Halem’nites Burnham and Tilly just started to get to know are in grave danger. The only way to stop the High Summit from failing is if the away team can find an auxiliary control panel somewhere near the High Summit and restart it. As if there wasn’t enough burden on Burnham’s shoulders.  

Considering the Halem’nites are constantly fighting thirst because of their planet’s general aridness, the competitors are subject to extreme thirst as they begin the race to the High Summit. As if running up a mountain wasn’t trying enough. Partway through the challenge, Burnham miraculously notices a point on the race trail where she thinks the auxiliary console is located, and drops out of the competition to pursue the lead. Sure enough, she finds and restarts the console, thanks to assistance from Ensign Tal, which strikes one mission objective off their list.

Tilly is heading toward her own disqualification from the race, if not for the support from Ravah. Soon enough, both Tilly and Ravah make it within striking distance of the finish line, and Tilly returns the favor by helping Ravah limp across in a show of good sportsmanship. Good for Tilly, but this just means both are now heading to the High Summit, which as we see shortly is not the enlightenment we were led to believe.

The winners of the race get to be close to gods who are supposed to bring rain to the natives. Burnham and Tilly know the weather station is actually responsible for bringing good weather, but the Halem’nites think something different: a human sacrifice in the heart of the High Summit is what does the trick. This twist is reminiscent of a similar sacrificial heart-dropping reveal in Strange New Worlds’ “ Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach ,” and suddenly the stakes are much higher for Burnham, who has to rescue Tilly and Ravah from a needless death – even if it violates the Prime Directive.

“Are there no gods? Are there… what is there?” “There is still what you believe. Nothing we have shown you means gods don’t exist.” – Ohvahz and Burnham

While they await their sacrifice, Tilly and Ravah bond over their struggle, and Ravah describes some peculiar numerical markings on the wall of the chamber, which both represent the five serenity prayers within Halem culture and the five weather towers across the planet. Tilly recognizes the fifth symbol as the same as being on the vial back on Discovery , but the revelation may not matter, as suffocation threatens to take Tilly and Ravah both.

Despite the enormous consequences of revealing the existence of people not from Halem, never mind the reveal of the High Summit not just being a tool of the gods, Burnham flips off the Prime Directive and reveals herself to Ohvahz so she can rescue the innocent people trapped inside the High Summit. She convinces Ohvahz that her extraterrestrial story is legit, and that the High Summit is actually a piece of technology – no small discovery for the native.

Should Burnham have blatantly violated the Prime Directive in this way? Of course not, but let’s be honest: the Prime Directive really is more of a guideline than a rule for the protagonists in Star Trek shows. We hope Burnham faces some discipline for this flagrant violation of Starfleet’s most sacred rule. In any case, Burnham breaking the Prime Directive ultimately means the Halem’nites need to start to embrace a major societal change. The ritual race to the High Summit won’t have as much meaning anymore now that they know the rain will come no matter what, but as Burnham suggests, perhaps there are plenty of Helem’nites who are ready for a change. As Ohvahz notes to his daughter, “Perhaps devotion means being able to hear when the gods tell us something new.” This is as great a lesson as any Star Trek episode can offer.

With the weather tower repaired and two peoples’ lives saved from a needless sacrificial death, the Discovery crew retrieves the next clue from one of the planet’s other water towers.  Near the end of the episode, Burnham and Tilly ponder the meaning of finding the clue in a water tower, and they reason that technology can be powerfully dangerous in the wrong hands, and they need to be careful when they find the Progenitor’s tech. And just on schedule, the crew learns of Moll and L’ak’s most recent whereabouts, but that’ll have to wait until next week.

Elsewhere in this episode, Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) is still struggling with explaining and processing the spiritual awakening he has had following his experiences in “ Jinaal .” His partner, Paul Stamets, doesn’t seem to quite get what Culber is going through, and not even “grief alleviation therapy” – where a holographic version of Culber’s wise grandmother can have conversations with the doctor – can help.

The person who does offer some welcome perspective and emotional support is Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ). Book asserts that Culber’s spiritual awakening, and accompanying emotional turbulence, is just as important as anybody else’s journey – and that’s all we’ll get from Culber’s multi-episode arc for now. After a few episodes of marginal development, hopefully, something happens with this subplot soon, or else we’re going to start to lose interest. But while Culber’s arc may seem tangential at times, his search for meaning resonates with the overarching themes of identity and purpose woven throughout the series.

So, as the Discovery crew continues their quest for the Progenitors’ technology, they are reminded of the potential dangers that come with wielding such power. It is a sobering realization that underscores the responsibility they bear as guardians of advanced technology in a universe fraught with conflict and peril.

With each episode, this season invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of morality, identity, and the ever-evolving nature of progress. As the crew inches their way toward the ultimate treasure, “Whistlespeak” remains true to one overarching theme of this show: the true measure of humanity lies not in adherence to rules, but in our capacity for compassion and understanding in the face of uncertainty and adversity. That seems to be what this show is all about, yeah?

Stray Thoughts:

• Why didn’t it occur to Culber, a doctor, sooner that he should run a series of tests on his body, as his grandmother suggests, to determine if there’s something medically wrong with him.
• Tilly drops a couple hints about what is going on at Starfleet Academy nowadays, and it’s not a rosy picture. The Academy isn’t giving the cadets “what they need,” so perhaps these conflicts will be at play in the upcoming Starfleet Academy show?
• Why do video games in the 32nd century look no better than Space Invaders ?

Get ready for the final adventure!

This season finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the  U.S.S. Discovery  uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

The hit original series will premiere on Thursday, April 4, exclusively on the service in the U.S., the UK, Switzerland, South Korea, Latin America, Germany, France, Italy, Australia and Austria. It also will premiere on April 4 on Paramount+ in Canada. The first two episodes of the series’ 10-episode final season will be available to stream at launch with new episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays.

In addition, Season 5 of  Star Trek: Discovery  will be available to stream April 5 on SkyShowtime. Seasons 1-3 arrived on the service on March 8, with Season 4 arriving this week on March 22, ahead of the final season's launch.

Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 1-4 are streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., the UK, Canada, Switzerland, South Korea, Latin America, Germany, France, Italy, Australia and Austria. ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to End With Season 5, Paramount+ Pushes Premiere to 2024

“ Star Trek: Discovery ” will end with the upcoming Season 5 at Paramount+ , Variety has learned. In addition, the fifth and final season will now debut in early 2024 as opposed to this year as originally thought.

Filming is mostly complete on Season 5, but according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there will be some additional filming that has yet to take place. In addition, Paramount is planning to send the show off in style, with events planned in certain key markets throughout the year leading up to the final season’s release. Further details will be released at a later date.

Along with Martin-Green, the series also stars Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, Callum Keith Rennie. Per the official logline, Season 5 “will find Captain Burnham (Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. “Discovery” has been the flagship modern “Star Trek” series since it launched in 2017, at a time when Paramount+ was still known as CBS All Access. The series kicked off the rebooted “Star Trek” TV universe and led to the successful spinoff “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which is currently prepping its second season. The show also chalked up a number of firsts for the franchise, including having a Black female protagonist in Michael Burnham. It also prominently featured LGBTQIA+ characters in a way not previously seen in a “Star Trek” show.

“When we first started talking about the return of ‘Star Trek’ eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors, ‘Discovery’ honored ‘Star Trek’s’ legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences. Bryan Fuller and Kurtzman are the credited creators of “Discovery.” Kurtzman and Paradise serve as executive producers and co-showrunners, with Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth also executive producing. CBS Studios produces in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout is currently under an overall deal at CBS Studios.

The ending of “Discovery” comes as Paramount looks to continue building on the success of the “Star Trek” franchise while also coming to grips with the financial realities of the streaming era, as most major media companies have announced plans to slash content spending in the years going forward.

Along with “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds,” Paramount+ is currently airing the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which features a reunion of the “Next Generation” cast alongside series lead Patrick Stewart. There have been rumors that spinoffs built around characters in “Picard” could also be in the works.

Paramount+ also has the adult animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” which is prepping its fourth season, as well as the Nickelodeon series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” which is prepping its second season. Paramount has also been developing a Starfleet Academy series for some time, along with a series about the mysterious Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, a character she originated on “Discovery.”

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 6 goes old school and benefits because of it

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 6

Here we are then, the other side of the halfway mark of the very last season of " Star Trek: Discovery ." Will the plot actually advance any further? Or does the chase across the galaxy for the Progenitors MacGuffin continue, offering another chance to insert a stand-alone, episode-length adventure along the way? Interestingly, a look at the IMDb top 10 rated episodes of "Discovery" there isn't one single entry beyond the second season. 

This week's curiously named installment is entitled "Whistlespeak" and it's almost a throwback to old school-style of sci-fi storytelling, more typically found in something like "Stargate SG1." And a 10 episode-long chase for an alien artifact would be just fine in that show, because each season was typically 22 episodes long. Sadly, that's one reason why "Discovery" has been deteriorating, rather than improving, because each season — and it's far more obvious in seasons 3, 4 and 5 — seems to follow a very cookie-cutter formulaic approach.

There's always a threat facing all life in the universe (killer AI, exploding dilithium, gravity waves, Progenitor tech), there's always a series of clues-of-sorts that have to followed and that usually entails a set of standalone adventures before finally everything concludes in a disappointing payoff. Tragically, "Discovery" never really found its identity and it struggled from the outset when the original concept was not to focus on the captain of a particular starship, but rather the first officer. 

That combined with the fact that big-budget TV sci-fi has shifted to shorter seasons with more expensive episodes over longer seasons and more expansive storylines. Just remind yourself what other sci-fi shows have managed to achieve in five seasons; "Stargate: Atlantis" and " Babylon 5 " both had five seasons, "Battlestar Galactica" only had four and "Stargate: SG1" had 10. (Although the less said about the whole Ori storyline, the better.)

All that aside, this particular episode was a quirky little number that was actually quite enjoyable. So, that's nice. Yes, there are one or two enormous small plot holes and the super-convenient tech has somewhat taken a turn for the ridiculous. This is not swallowing a pill to genetically alter you temporarily, these are easy-install "optical tricorders" — yes, indeed, you need never have the burden of having to actually carry a tricorder anymore, because now they can be worn like contact lenses.

This week, Capt. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) beam incognito down to the surface of a pre-warp, pre-industrial world much like the Planet Vancouver that we often saw in just about every incarnation of "Stargate." And why-oh-why do these primitive, unevolved civilizations always have traditions that seem harmless at first, but upon further examination almost certainly seem to involve decapitation, disembowelment or any one of a hundred different, excruciating ways of dying, all in the name of glorious sacrifice to some god or another. Was the human race ever like tha...oh wait, hang on. Damn .

In this particular instance it's simply suffocating. Of course if you blew the fires out that also happen to be burning in the room, you know, using up all the precious air that's left, you might last a teeny-tiny bit longer. But that's probably not covered in standard Starfleet training, rather undergraduates are instead taught how to rebuild an illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator using only a discarded toothbrush, a clothes peg, an empty washing up liquid bottle and sticky-back plastic. 

You also have to wonder how the local population had such an in-depth knowledge of the sacrificial chamber if no one ever survived, but we'll look past that, just like the writers did. And boy-oh-boy, there's along time to kill before you get killed. On the up side, the dialogue is pretty sharp this week and despite all its flaws, this is a well-paced installment. Still, a cliffhanger might be nice at some point before the show wraps permanently. All things considered though, given the low bar "Discovery" has sadly set itself, this one isn't terrible. 

In other, somewhat related news, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish has stepped down and it's rumored that the entertainment giant is going to create an "office of the CEO" and have a team making the important decisions rather than a rich, white man who doesn't seem to have much of a clue. Sounds like a plan, right? Well, wait for it... Instead, three rich, white men will be making all the important decisions. George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks and Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures.

Needless to say, Paramount's share value has taken a nosedive this week. Now while most of this is related to Paramount Global, it will of course affect the future of Paramount Plus, including programming choices, budget and just about everything else that determines whether or not we'll get to see any "Star Trek" going forward, let alone quality "Star Trek." Let's face facts, the only reason we're getting a Section 31 TV series TV movie is because of contractual obligations. 

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home  on Netflix.  

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Sulu and his other versions, including his Mirror Universe counterpart, faithfully piloted the Enterprise for many years of the franchise's timeline, and Sulu's daughter, Demora (Jacqueline Kim) took on the task years later during Star Trek Generations .

Sulu isn't the only famous character to have been an Enterprise helmsman, however. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was the initial helmsman for the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation , and like Sulu would share the honor with his daughter, Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) who took on the role in Star Trek: Picard season 3.
