For travelers from many countries, accessing Malta as a visitor is very straightforward, putting the sunshine and history within easy reach. If you are also traveling to other countries around Europe as well as Malta, just remember to not go over the maximum number of days allowed for your visit to the Schengen area . Here's what you need to know about visas for Malta.

Who can enter Malta without a visa?

All citizens of the European Union are entitled to enter Malta and travel freely with a national identity card, except for travelers from Ireland, who must use an Irish passport card. At present, travelers from 63 countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States can also enter Malta and other countries in the Schengen area visa-free.

Travelers from visa-free countries will need a valid passport. The passport's expiry date must be at least 90 days after your confirmed departure date from Malta, and passports cannot be more than ten years old.

Who needs a tourist visa to enter Malta?

Malta is part of the Schengen area , a grouping of 26 European nations that issue a common visa allowing travelers a maximum stay of 90 days during any 180-day period. This is valid for travel across the Schengen Area.

Travelers from countries who cannot enter Malta visa-free must apply for a Schengen tourist visa in advance of travel – details are on the government's Identity Malta website . Information required for the application includes dates and details of transport arrangements to enter and exit the Schengen zone, proof of accommodation, and proof of financial means of support. The cost for the application is €80 for adults and €45 for children.

Extending a Schengen area visa

If you wish to stay in the Schengen area for longer than 90 days, it is possible to extend a Schengen visa, but extensions are granted rarely, and approval is usually only given for humanitarian reasons or because of force majeure (for example, a natural disaster in your home country). For longer stays in Malta specifically, you can apply for a National Visa – also known as a Long Stay or ‘D’ visa.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) rules for 2023

Under the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) – expected to go live from early 2023 – travelers from the 63 non-EU countries currently permitted visa-free entry to the Schengen area will need to complete an online application to confirm authorization to enter the Schengen zone.

There's a €7 fee and applications will take around ten minutes to complete online. Successful authorizations will be valid for three years, or for the remaining validity of the applicant's passport if it expires sooner. Note that a maximum stay in the Schengen area of 90 days across a 180-day period will still apply.

Post-Brexit travel from the UK to Malta

The UK departed from the European Union in 2020, but citizens of the UK are still permitted to enter the Schengen area without a visa, including to visit Malta. However, British travelers will need to complete an application via ETIAS once the system goes live.

What if I need to leave and re-enter the Schengen area?

Multiple-entry access to the Schengen area – enabling travelers to re-enter after exiting to non-Schengen countries – is usually granted automatically to visitors from the 63 visa-free countries. It's a convenient option for travelers from southern hemisphere countries such as Australia and New Zealand who also wish to visit popular non-Schengen zone destinations including the UK and Turkey.

When exiting and re-entering Malta and the Schengen zone, it's vital to still adhere to the maximum stay of 90 days across a 180-day period (this starts from the date you first enter the Schengen area).

COVID-19 rules for entry to Malta

As of May 9, 2022, wearing a mask in Malta is only mandatory on flights, or when visiting a hospital or care home for the elderly. While not mandatory, the Maltese government does still recommend masks are worn when attending large gatherings.

Travelers no longer need to complete a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) but must present either a vaccine certificate, a negative PCR test, or a COVID recovery certificate upon arrival. See Malta's Health Ministry website for the latest on COVID-19 regulations.

For such a small island, Malta is absolutely packed with fascinating treasures. Breathtaking ancient sites, charming cities and beautiful beaches are just the beginning. Malta has attracted adventurers for centuries, and modern visitors have many opportunities for creating lasting memories in this enchanted place. Whether tourists want to enjoy relaxing by the sea, sampling Mediterranean dishes or discovering a romantic piece of the past, the top tourist attractions in Malta certainly offer something for everyone.

The island country joined the European Union in 2004 and abolished its borders with the other Schengen member states in 2007. In 2017 alone, Malta received 37,881 Schengen visa applications from travellers around the world, visiting the country as their main destination. The number of visitors is much higher, taking into account the number of travellers that got a Schengen visa from other countries, and the number of countries the citizens of which can enter visa-free.

As of 15th July 2020 , flights to and from some countries has been extended to include the UK on the  Visit Malta website . All arriving passengers must have completed a paper copy of both a  Public Health Travel Declaration  and the  Passenger Locator Form . These are available at the  Malta Airport website , or you can also enquire with your airline.

Malta adopts  its own national classification of risk areas , so travel restrictions are not based on the common “EU Traffic Lights” map, but on whether the traveller is coming from a country that is on Malta’s corridor countries list . Travellers coming from a corridor country can enter the country, while travellers from “Dark Red” or “Red” countries can enter as long as they have stayed in a “corridor country” for a minimum of 14 days. It is not possible to transit through Malta from airports outside the list of corridor countries.

Malta has already connected to the EU Gateway or the EU Digital COVID Certificate , so you can apply for one in order to be able to enter the country. Although the certificate provides a standardised recognition of the holder's COVID-19 vaccination status, COVID-19 recovery, or COVID-19 test result, each EU country is still responsible for its own entry requirements and rules.   Requirements for entry to each EU country are not standardised, the measures and entry rules still depend on your place at your destination.

Malta's border restrictions change frequently, depending on the current circumstances, so it’s important to keep updated from  trusted news sources , the  UK government website , or the  Maltese government  website so that you are up to date on the latest news.

Who needs a visa to travel to Malta from the UK?

Malta is a  Schengen country , which allows for free movement between 26 EU and EFTA states (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland). A uniform Schengen visa issued by one of the Schengen states is valid for travel within the whole Schengen area.

The rules for travelling or working in European countries changed on 1 January 2021:

  • you can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to  90 days in any 180-day period  without a visa as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training
  • if you are travelling to Malta and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days
  • for long-stay visits, to work or study, for business or for other reasons, you will need to meet the Maltese government’s entry requirements.
  • if you stay in Malta with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit

At Maltese border control, you may need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing. Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit. You may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show you have enough money for your stay

There are separate requirements for those who are residents of Malta. If you are resident in Malta, you should carry proof of residence as well as your valid passport when you travel. You should also check your passport’s validity when you travel and renew it if you don’t have enough time on it. Your passport must be:

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Malta or any other Schengen country
  • less than 10 years old

Many non-EU nationals who reside in the UK are still required to get a Schengen visa to travel to Malta.

Citizens of the following countries residing in the UK and planning to visit Malta are required to get a Malta visa to be able to enter Malta.

The main requirement if you want to apply from the UK is that you must have a UK residence permit valid for at least another three more months beyond the date you plan to leave Malta or the Schengen Area.

Before starting a visa application, or getting a flight to Malta, make sure to check whether you need a visa to Malta or not.

If you have a 3-month UK visa you can extend it for three more months in order to be eligible to apply for a Malta Schengen visa from within the UK. You must apply for an extension before your visa expires and while you’re still in the UK. If you are not a resident in the United Kingdom you should apply at the Malta Embassy/Consulate/VAC in your home country of residence.

Note : You can stay in the UK until the decision about the extension is taken, but only if you have applied within the visa period.

In case you plan on staying in Malta for more than 90 days you must apply for a residency permit, not a Malta Schengen visa.

Steps to Applying for a Maltese Schengen Visa from the UK

There are 2 types of visas that you can apply for. The type of Schengen visa you need will depend on the duration of your trip and your reason for travelling to Malta:

  • Short-stay (Schengen) Visa – valid for up to 90 days (in a 180-day period) for the purposes of tourism, business, visiting family/friends, conference, EEA/EU national family member
  • Residence and work permits (Long stays) – you should apply for this kind of visa if you want to live in Malta for more than 90 days for employment, family reunification, study, research etc.

You will then behttps://immigrationandmigration.com/90-180-day-rule-schengen-calculator-free-schengen-zone-stay-calculator/ issued either a  single entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visa  for up to  5 years  based on the information you provide in your visa application.

It is important to choose the correct Schengen visa type to apply for depending on your trip so that you have the best chance of having your application approved. Find out more about the different types of Schengen visas in our blog post: Schengen Visa Types – All You Should Know When Applying for a Schengen Visa .

Step 2: Identify where to make the application and book an appointment

Note that you cannot apply for a visa directly at the Malta Embassy in the UK. Instead, you can apply for a Schengen Visa for Malta from the UK through the VFS Centers in London, Manchester and Edinburgh (for tourism and business visas only).

To apply for a visa through one of the VFS Centres you will have to make an appointment, prior to showing up at one of their centres. Sometimes, especially during peak season when they are receiving a lot of applications, you will have to wait for a while for your appointment.

You should apply for a Malta visa at the appropriate Malta Embassy, Consulate or Malta visa application centre in the UK if:

  • Malta is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting
  • Malta is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in)
  • Malta is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in The Malta and another Schengen country)

Visa applications for UK residents wishing to visit Malta can be filed at the VFS Visa Application Centers in UK, located in London, Edinburgh and Manchester. All applications will be assessed by the Malta High Commission, London.

Every Malta visa application must be submitted in person and by appointment only, as explained above. Please note that they do not accept walk-in applications, therefore, an appointment is obligatory.

The VACs are open every workday starting at 08:30 to 17:30.

  • Official Visit  – Tick this as your purpose of travel if you are travelling to the Schengen region in an official capacity.
  • Cultural, Sports, and Film Crews   – this visa is for people wishing to travel to a Schengen member country for the purpose of attending a cultural, sports, or religious event or they are part of a film crew. The applicant should be part of the event, i.e. a performer at a concert, or a writer presenting their book at a book event, or an athlete participating in a sports event and not only as a mere audience.

Step 5: Attend your appointment

The visa interview is a meeting between you and the consular officer/interviewer. During this interview, the consular officer will ask you several questions about you and your intended trip. You will also be submitting the required documents throughout the meeting, to the interviewer.

Find out more about the Schengen visa interview here:  Schengen Visa Interview Questions and Answers and How to Prepare for it

The fee must be paid upon submitting the Malta visa application. After you complete this payment, you will receive a receipt, which shows that payment has been made, which must be offered amongst other documents of the application dossier. You will have to pay a Maltese visa fee in order for your application to be processed.

Since Malta is a Schengen state, visa fees are the same as any other Schengen visa. Find out about the Schengen visa fee in our blog post:  Schengen Visa Fees – How Much Does a Schengen Visa Cost?

Step 6: Receive your visa

You can apply for a Malta Schengen Visa 6 months before your planned trip. Depending on the nationality of the applicant, the processing time may take at least 15 days from the day of application. In some cases when required documents are missing from the application, this process may take longer.

Therefore, to avoid unwanted complications, the Malta Consulate General in London advises that you provide all required documents and submit your application at least 20 workdays (4 weeks) before the day you leave for Malta.

Malta Schengen Visa Application Decision

If your application for a Malta Schengen visa is approved, it will be stamped on your passport and you can visit Malta and any country in the Schengen area for the duration of your visa. Find out how to read your Schengen visa sticker in our blog post:  How to Read Your Schengen Visa Sticker .

If your application is rejected, it would have been for a specific reason.

malta visit visa from uk

  • Marriage certificate missing – if you are applying for a visa for family reasons, you may have to prove family ties. This is why you must provide a marriage certificate
  • You applied for the wrong visa – it is your responsibility to apply for the correct visa depending on how long you are going to Malta for and your reason for travelling there
  • It is not clear that you plan to return to the UK – it must be clear that you intend to return to the UK before the visa expires. If the visa staff have doubts about this, your visa will be rejected
  • The purpose of your trip cannot be established – the reason why you are planning to go to Malta must be made clear. You can do this by providing specific documents like a full itinerary, work contract or invitation letter, etc.

If you receive a negative answer in your Malta Schengen visa application, this does not mean you cannot ever travel to Malta. You have two options.

  • File an appeal for Malta Schengen visa rejection if you believe that the decision to deny you a visa is unjust. You should have a strong basis for your complaint. You can appeal this decision by writing an appeal letter for a Malta Schengen visa rejection.
  • Reapply by correcting the mistakes you did in your previous application. Or improve your situation to comply with the eligibility criteria for a Malta Schengen Visa.

Malta Schengen Visa Extension

A person visiting Malta on a Schengen Visa can extend their visa if they have legitimate reasons. This could be for either of the following reasons:

  • Humanitarian reasons
  • Force majeure, and
  • Important personal reasons

The decisions to approve a Schengen visa extension request are handled case by case.

The overall process of extending your Maltese Schengen visa will involve:

  • Determining whether you have a justified reason to request an extension
  • Submitting all the necessary documents. These include a valid passport that has the Schengen Visa used to get in the Schengen area stamped in it, one passport-sized photo, proof of financial subsistence, Schengen Visa Insurance that covers the extension duration, and all the documents that justify your reason for an extension
  • Paying visa fees where applicable
  • Attending a visa interview if necessary
  • Waiting for the approval

You need to make sure to read your Schengen visa sticker carefully so that you do not overstay your visa and avoid the penalties that come with doing so, which can include anything from a fine, deportation from the Schengen zone, and even being outright banned from the area.

Malta’s currency is the Euro so you can bring some with you on your trip if you are planning on bringing cash. Cash is still widely used in Malta, in fact, more often compared to any other country within the EU, so it would be a good idea to bring some with you on your trip.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the  Embassy of Malta’s  website for the most current visa information.

Malta is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that U.S. citizens may enter Malta for up to  90 days for tourist or business purposes  without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. You need proof of sufficient funds and a return airline ticket for entry. For additional details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see  Traveling in Europe .

Diplomats entering Malta on their diplomatic passport are required to obtain a visa prior to entry into Malta. For more information, please contact [email protected] .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any  HIV/AIDS  entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Malta.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Europe. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks; however, all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations. Malta’s open borders with members of the Schengen zone allow the possibility of individual terrorists entering/exiting the country undetected.

CRIME: The most commonly reported crimes are simple assault , pick-pocketing , and petty theft . While armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides are not as common as in some major U.S. cities, they do occur. Criminals focus on areas and establishments frequented by tourists.

  • Secure your valuables, and be aware of pick-pockets and purse snatchers.
  • Theft of unattended property is a very common problem.

See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Nightclubs: You should be careful in the Paceville nightclub area, where excessive drinking, large crowds, and interaction with heavy-handed bouncers can lead to violence , including some that appears to be racially-motivated . Criminals have drugged some travelers at bars and robbed and assaulted them.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police by dialing 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (+356) 2561-4000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent

  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence should contact the Embassy for assistance.

Malta’s crime victim assistance agency, Appogg , can be reached by calling its support line (dial 179) or by visiting its website .

The local equivalent to the 911 emergency line in Malta is 112 .

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not occur on a regular basis.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities.  First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Your U.S. passport will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution .

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Malta are severe .
  • Malta’s laws on the rights of arrestees are different from the United States. For example, once you have contacted a lawyer, you lose your right to remain silent.

Judicial Proceedings for Criminal Offenses in Malta: Trials typically last five to seven years and are characterized by lengthy and sometimes unpredictable delays between hearings. Foreign nationals can expect to be denied bail while a court case is ongoing, which can result in lengthy periods of pre-trial detention ranging from several months to several years. Obtaining no-fee legal aid can be a slow and difficult process, delaying already lengthy judicial proceedings.

Furthermore, some crimes are also prosecutable in the United States regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Customs and Currency Restrictions: Malta customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning currency restrictions and temporary importation into or export from Malta of items such as firearms , antiquities , or any item that might be deemed to have resale value. It is advisable to contact the Maltese Embassy in Washington, D.C. for specific information regarding customs requirements.

  • Malta’s customs authorities encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples and/or goods for exhibitions and fair purposes. The U.S. Council for International Business issues and guarantees the ATA Carnet in the United States.

LGBTI RIGHTS: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Malta.

See the LGBTI Travel Information page and Section 6 of the State Department’s Human Rights Report for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Very few public or private spaces in Malta are wheelchair accessible. Public transportation and most sidewalks or footpaths, including road crossings, are not accessible for those with mobility challenges. Many apartments lack elevators.

  • Taxis are readily available, but the cost is substantially higher than public buses.

Students: See the students abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See travel tips for women travelers .

Medical care is available from private and government clinics and hospitals. The quality of medical care in Malta is at U.S. standards; however, customer service standards are lower, there are cultural differences with regard to communication, and there may be long waiting times for non-urgent medical care . Medical specialists are few. Private hospitals generally offer better customer service, shorter wait times, and more amenities. Mater Dei is Malta’s main government hospital. Though it offers full service, including a modern emergency room and trauma facilities, it can be crowded and difficult to navigate.

The U.S. Government does not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas . Most overseas care providers only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication , check with the Government of Malta and its Medicines Authority to ensure the medication is legal in Malta . Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ROAD CONDITIONS: Maltese drivers may drive more aggressively and with less caution than visitors anticipate. Roads flood easily and are often narrow, winding and congested, with poor visibility around curves.

  • In Malta, automobiles drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Buses are the primary means of public transportation.
  • Taxis are safe but expensive and are not metered . Agree on the charge with the driver in advance .

Please see our road safety page for more information. Visit the website of Malta’s national tourist office and national authority responsible for road safety.

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Malta’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Malta’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Malta should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at the Maritime Security Communications with Industry Web Portal . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website and as a broadcast warning on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s website .

Malta visa policy.

Malta is one of the territories to make up the Schengen Area after becoming a signatory to the Schengen Agreement. This is why it maintains the same policy as 26 other Schengen countries and territories in Europe. Anyone looking to visit Malta must complete the policy and hold a visa unless they are from non-visa-exempt countries or territories. Such visitors qualify for the universal Schengen visa waiver program so they can visit Malta for a short time without the need to hold valid visas.

Eligibility of visa entry or nonvisa entry is based on the visitor's nationality, duration of stay, and the purpose of the trip. This is the policy that guides the overall immigration regulation of the island.

As for the EU and Schengen, nationals don't need visas to enter Malta as they enjoy freedom of entry and exit. Furthermore, Schengen citizens can enter another country in the Area with valid ID cards if they don't have passports and stay indefinitely in the Country or territory for as long as they wish.

Malta Schengen Visa

Another category of persons that can visit Malta is persons from jo visa-exempt countries. If you are from a nonvisa-exempt country, you will need a Schengen visa to enter Malta. Schengen visas are valid for 180 days and allow the holder to stay in Malta for up to 90 days. These visas are multinational visas because the holder can equally visit any other Schengen country or territory with the same visa instead of applying for a different visa for each Country. Moreover, the Schengen visa can also be used to visit other non-Schengen European countries, like Romania, the Republic of Cyprus, and Bulgaria.

Schengen visas are not work or study visas: they are issued for the sole purpose of tourism, business transit, or any other short-term non-economic purposes.

  • Malta ETIAS

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new program launched by the European Commission on behalf of the EU and Schengen States. This program was commissioned in 2016 and unveiled in late 2022. ETIAS is a visa waiver program for nationals from visa-exempt countries who wish to visit Malta or any other Schengen country in Europe. It is a pre-screening system in which the visitor must pass and get a permit for entry. In the past visa-exempt visitors could simply visit the Schengen Area with just a valid passport, but all that has changed now.

The policy is partially implemented, but by the start of 2024, all visa-exempt visitors must get ETIAS approval before they can enter the Schengen Area. ETIAS is an electronic system that screens the information of each visitor using several security databases. Persons who pass the screening will be issued the approval, while those who fail will be denied entry into Europe.

This is not a visa on arrival or an electronic visa but an entry permit. It allows visitors to enter and stay in Malta for up to 90 days but only within a 180 days period. ETIAS is also valid for 3 years and can be used multiple times.

Key Information About Malta ETIAS

The application process for Malta ETIAS may be straightforward and simple, but the rules guiding its use are somewhat complex. To ensure that you leave nothing to chance, we review key information; you should keep in mind.

Primary Destination Rule:  When traveling to Schengen countries and territories, the primary destination rule is one to keep in mind. This rule states that visitors with plans to visit more than one Schengen country must make the first Country they intend to visit their primary destination. For instance, if you plan to visit five Schengen countries in 90 days and Malta is your first port of call, you should make it your primary destination when filling out your Etias form.

90/180 Rule: This rule covers the duration of stay. It simply means that the applicant must not stay for more than 90 days In Malta within 180 days. The rule still holds if you decide to visit other countries during your trip. Rather than counting the days per Country separately, the days are calculated concurrently from the first day you step into Malta and the last day you spend in a different country before leaving the Schengen Area.

Additional Vetting:  ETIAS screening processes take some minutes, and you should know your fate immediately whether your application has been accepted or not. However, in certain situations, applications may be put on hold if your details trigger a security alert, but this rarely happens. Your data will be forwarded to the local ETIAS unit in Malta for further vetting in such a scenario. You will be notified; the orgies may take a few days or weeks to respond.

Only For Visa Exempt Nationals: This permit is only designed for visitors who qualify for the visa waiver program by virtue of their nationality. If you are not from a visa-exempt country, apply for a Schengen visa instead.

Not For Employment or Study: ETIAS is not for employment or study as it is only a short-stay document, not for long-term residency or work. If you must work or study in Malta, apply for a work or study visa instead.

Unless you are from the UK, US, or one of the Schengen countries, you must obtain a valid visa prior to entering Malta. The Maltese government offers different types of visas to foreign nationals including tourist visa, business visa, and transit visas.

In this article, we have discussed in detail about Maltese tourist visa, visa requirements, and how to apply for this travel document online. So, without further ado, let's get into it!

Malta Tourist Visa - An Overview

The Maltese tourist visa or Schengen visa is a travel document that permits holders to visit a beautiful country located in Southern Europe. Malta is known for a lot of things, including its beaches, bays, unexplored lands, and much more. Therefore, each year, millions of tourists visit Malta to explore the natural beauty of this nation.

Before you travel to Malta, the most important thing you need is a valid visa. For business purposes, you can apply for a Malta business visa. If you are transiting through the country, you can get a Malta transit visa. However, if you want to explore the natural beauty of this southern European country, you must get a valid Maltese tourist visa.

A Malta tourist visa permits you to stay in the country for 90 consecutive days. It's a residence visa that allows you to visit relatives, spend holidays, or explore the country.

Although travelers were required to apply for a Malta tourist visa by visiting the Maltese embassy in the past, you can now get this travel document online at VisaHQ: the method discussed below!

Malta Tourist Visa Requirements

To get a Maltese visa, applicants must provide some essential documents, also known as the Malta visa requirements. These documents vary from applicant to applicant, depending on your nationality.

Some of the most basic documents required to apply for a Schengen visa include the following:

Valid Passport - An original passport issued by your country. Your passport must have 2 blank pages and 6 months of remaining validity

E-mail Address - Your email address will be linked to your passport, and you'll get your approved visa via email. So, make sure to use a valid and active email address to apply for a Malta Schengen visa

COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate - it's advised to get a COVID-19 vaccination certificate prior to visiting Malta to avoid self-isolation

Proof of Sufficient Funds - A bank statement or any other document as proof that you can pay for your own experience

Health Insurance - An international travel health insurance with a coverage of at least 30,000 hours.

Invitation Letter - An invitation letter from the host living in Malta

Proof of Accommodation - A copy of the hotel reservation or any other lodging

Besides these, you also need an online payment method to pay the embassy fee as well as the visa service fee. To do so, you can use a debit card, credit card, or PayPal account. Visit VisaHQ and select your citizenship to find out all of the Malta tourist visa requirements for your country!

How To Apply For A Malta Tourist Visa Online?

Visa Application Form

The applicant's application form is the most important thing to get a Maltese visa. If there are mistakes in your application, your visa will most likely be delayed or denied by the embassy. So make sure to double-check your online form prior to submitting it. And remember not to put any incorrect information.

To fill out the Malta visa application form, you need to provide personal, travel, passport, and contact information, such as:

Name and surname

Date of birth

Nationality

Passport number

Passport issue and expiry date

Email address

Home address

Phone number

Travel dates

Processing Time

The average processing time for a Malta Schengen tourist visa is 20 business days. However, if the embassy needs to perform some secondary checks, you may have to wait a little longer, so plan accordingly!

However, tourism is not the only purpose foreign travelers visit Malta. You can also visit Malta for business purposes. In this article, we have discussed in detail about the Malta business visa and how to apply for this travel document online!

How To Apply For A Malta Business Visa?

Once you have all of the necessary documents required to apply for a Malta Schengen business visa, you can start the visa application process. The fastest and most convenient approach is to apply for a Malta visa via VisaHQ!

No need to visit the nearest Malta embassy or consulate office. No need to spend an entire day filling dozens of forms. You don't even have to schedule a visa interview! All you need to do is visit VisaHQ, select your citizenship and travel destination, and follow the following step-by-step guide:

Fill out the Malta visa application form.

Pay the visa processing fee.

Submit your online form with supporting documents.

You can complete this entire process within 10-15 minutes. Afterward, the embassy will process your application form, and you'll get your approved visa via email!

You need to be extra careful while filling out the visa application form. If there are errors or mistakes in your online form, your visa will most likely be denied or delayed by the embassy. To fill out the visa application form, you need to provide the following information:

Personal Information - Full name, date of birth, nationality

Contact Detail - Home address, email address, phone number

Passport Data - Passport number, issue, and expiry date

Travel Plans - Travel dates and other plans

Before you submit your application form, make sure to double-check the provided information to avoid complications.

There are several factors that affect the processing time for a Malta business visa, including your citizenship. The average processing time for a Malta visa is 20 business days. However, due to secondary checks and mistakes in your application, you may need to wait a little longer.

Once you get your business visa, you can pack your bag and travel to Malta. Keep in mind that a business visa does not guarantee your entry; the immigration department has the final say. So, make sure to fulfill all of the Malta entry requirements while traveling to the country.

The Henley Passport Index ranks the most powerful passports in the world for visa-free travel.

Thinking of visiting China, India, or Venezuela with a US passport for your summer vacation? Not so fast — or at least not before securing a visa. The index is a ranking of passports based on how many countries their holders can access without a visa and is based on data from the International Air Transport Authority.

Singapore is in the top spot with its passport, which allows holders to travel to 195 countries without first securing a visa. Japan had previously held the No. 1 position but has since fallen to No. 2, joining France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, which all allow access to 194 countries.
