11 Best Day Tours from Ljubljana

1. triglav national park.

⭐ Ratings : 4.85 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 12 hours

Triglav National Park has many of Slovenia’s most stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and mountains, and this small group, full-day tour takes you to some of the very best spots.

You’ll stop by Lake Bled to admire the views, then visit the Pericnik and Kozjak waterfalls (two of my favorite waterfalls in all of Slovenia), see the gorgeous Soca River and the Great Soca Gorge . You also have the option to add on a white water rafting excursion on the emerald-green Soca River, which you definitely need to do!

You’ll also drive up the 25 switchbacks of the Vrsic Mountain pass (see cover photo for this post), see the Russian Chapel , stop at the peaceful and picturesque Zelenci Nature Preserve , and finally visit the alpine Lake Jasna , surrounded by mountain peaks.

Truly, these are some of my favorite destinations in Slovenia, all combined into an unforgettable day tour from Ljubljana.

Such a great day! Small group with great vibes. Our guide, Nika, was informative, thoughtful, knowledgable, and a very proud Slovenian! My exhaustion at the end of the day was the best kind. Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – julie, tour review

2. Lake Bled + Vintgar Gorge

⭐ Ratings : 4.81 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 9 hours 30 minutes

Lake Bled is an absolutely fairytale location, and is truly a must-do day trip from Ljubljana. This gorgeous blue lake has a small island with a church in the center of it, and several things to see and do around the lake.

On this tour , you’ll start at the Bled Castle , an interesting medieval castle that overlooks the lake from a cliff. You’ll go out on a traditional pletna boat on the lake to visit the island, where you’ll have some time to explore and visit the church, and thereafter some free time in Bled.

You’ll also visit the Vintgar Gorge , a magical canyon with tall walls, a river running down the middle, and a boardwalk through the gorge where visitors can walk through. The Vintgar Gorge is a top highlight for anyone visiting the Lake Bled area.

You’ll finish the day at nearby Lake Bohinj , the largest lake in Slovenia, surrounded by tall mountains, before heading back to Ljubljana. Lake Bled is just 45 minutes from Ljubljana.

Great itinerary with the right amount of time spent at each stop. Interesting and thoughtful guide (Rocco) who provided water and umbrellas. Would recommend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – ALEXANDRA, TOUR REVIEW

3. Postojna Cave + Predjama Castle

ljubljana day tour

⭐ Ratings : 4.80 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 6 hours

A visit to the Slovenian cave systems is one of the most popular day tours from Ljubljana! This small group tour is led by a knowledgeable and engaging Slovenian local who shares stories and information about the country as you drive from Ljubljana out to the caves in the countryside.

You’ll first visit Postojna Cave , where you’ll take an open-air train ride deep into the cave system. A guide takes you along the route, sharing stories and pointing out notable features.

You’ll walk through the series of beautiful grand caverns filled with really fun features – stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes and sizes on various levels throughout the room, bridges, and tunnels.

Postojna Cave is also famous for their cave dragons – albino amphibians (like a salamander) that live solely in the waters of the cave. You’ll be able to observe 5-6 of these dragons that live in an aquarium at the end of the tour.

After Postojna Cave, you’ll drive 10 minutes to nearby Predjama Castle , which has some cave features and is built into the side of a cliff ! You get to explore the castle and learn its history, and even visit some of the caverns in the rock behind and adjacent to the castle.

These caves are about 1 hour from Ljubljana, you get to skip the line, and all entrance fees are included in the price, making it a really good value.

Great day exploring the beautiful and intriguing castle and incredible caves! The caves were spectacular, not to be missed with a guided tour. Igor our tour guide was brilliant, giving us lots of history of Ljubljana and Slovenia on the journeys making it very interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – ELISABETH, tour review

4. Skocjan Cave

⭐ Ratings : 4.87 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 10 hours

An alternative to visiting Postojna + Predjama is instead to visit Skocjan Cave , This 8-person tour from Ljubljana takes you out on a full-day adventure to visit Škocjan caves.

Skocjan Cave , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is very different from Postojna Caves, as there are fewer stalagmites and stalactites and cave formations. Instead, you get to walk on a cliffside path in a massive cavern with towering walls and a river rushing down below. You’ll cross a bridge spanning the gorge , and it all gives big Lord of the Rings vibes.

After the cave, you’ll continue on to the coast to enjoy a blissful afternoon by the sea in Piran. Note that admission fees are not included in the tour price.

Skocjan cave is something out of this world. I never expected it to be so beautiful. Piran is a beautiful town with blue water. Our guide Nina was terrific. She gave us a little extra time to enjoy a nice lunch. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – vera, tour review

5. Wine Tour in the Vipava Valley

ljubljana day tour

⭐ Ratings : 5 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 7 hours

The western region of Slovenia south of Triglav National Park is known as “ Slovenia’s Tuscany ,” and is filled with vineyard after vineyard after vineyard . The area is incredibly rural and not highly trafficked at all, and tiny villages are perched at the top of rolling hills, with rows of vines spread out in the hills and valleys beneath. It’s a breathtaking, idyllic part of the country… that also happens to make extremely good wine.

On this small, 8-person tour , you’ll travel with a sommelier guide, visiting two unique wineries and cellars in the Vipava region. You’ll learn about wine-making, walk through vineyards, and of course, sample a lot of wine varieties, with charcuterie snacks to go with it.

This is an excellent, top-rated tour with a lot of attention to giving you the best experience.

Absolutely brilliant! Hands down the best wine tour we’ve ever been on. Boris is an amazing guide, loves everything about Slovenia and doesn’t know what a small measure is! Would highly recommend – the wine, experience, guide and locations are all winners! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – helen, tour review

ljubljana day tour

⭐ Ratings : 4.70 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 9 hours 30 minutes

Piran is Slovenia’s beautiful coastal, pedestrian-only city on the Adriatic Sea. It is filled with Venetian architecture, a charming harbor, waterfront walkways next to clear water, colorful buildings, and narrow winding streets.

On this tour , you’ll go on a sightseeing tour with your guide through the adorable city, seeing the top sites and learning about the history of the town. You’ll visit the Church of St George + Bell Tower (for incredible views), walk along the old city walls , and stop in Tartini Square , the expansive main square in town.

After the guided tour, free time is given to explore the rest of the city, stop by the beach, walk along the seafront promenade, take in the sights of the harbor , and see the Piran lighthouse. I recommend grabbing a bite to eat some traditional food at one of the restaurants along the promenade!

At the end of the day, you’ll stop by the Lipica Stud Farm , where highly bred Lipizzaner white horses are kept and trained.

Piran is just 1.5 hours from Ljubljana.

A lovely day trip to Piran and Lipizza stables. The guide was very friendly, flexible and shared very much interesting information. Definitely worth of visiting! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – elina, tour review

7. Logar Valley

ljubljana day tour

⏳ Tour Time : 7 hours

The Logar Valley is part of an oft-overlooked mountain range in north-central Slovenia, that has long, narrow valleys filled with meadows and forests that end in tall, towering mountains.

The Rinka waterfall is a must-see attraction here, and there are several scenic hikes through the valleys, or more intense hikes up into the mountains. Biking through the hills and valleys is also a popular activity here, or you can always just relax and enjoy the views.

This tour is a private tour , meaning you can customize your day in Logar exactly how you want.

8. Maribor and Ptuj

ljubljana day tour

⭐ Ratings : 4.60 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 9 hours 30 minutes

Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city, located on the eastern edge of the country, and Ptuj is a small town just 30 minutes from Maribor. Both cities are incredibly charming, and you’ll see a lot of really pretty architecture from when Slovenia was part of the Austrian Empire.

In Maribor you can visit the Glavni Trg Square and Slomskov Trg Square , the Stari Most Bridge for views over Old Town, and the Lent riverside neighborhood. There’s also the Maribor Castle Museum , and the oldest vine in the world (which is over 400 years old and gated off on a street by the river)

Ptuj (pronounced p-too-ee) is *so* quaint and charming, and has beautiful, colorful buildings with decorations and ornamentations around the facades. Ptuj also has a cool castle on the hill above town that you can visit. You’ll also enjoy all the picturesque vineyards around Ptuj.

This tour is definitely in the region of Slovenia that most people don’t visit, so you’ll be with very few other tourists in these cities. Maribor is 1.5 hours from Ljubljana.

Very special trip with the best guide Primo! Very well explanations about every small part of the trip in Maribor, Ptuj. We have enough time to relax and enjoy with the guide and with other travelers. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – nofar, tour review

9. Venice , Italy

ljubljana day tour

⭐ Ratings : 5 of 5 stars | ⏳ Tour Time : 12 hours

The romantic city of Venice is on just about everyone’s bucket list, and Venice is only 2.5 hours from Ljubljana – who can pass that up?

The private (only you and your group) tour to Venice includes transportation to the city, and a guided tour of some of the main sites, such as St Mark’s Square , the Doge’s Palace , and Rialto Bridge .

You will also have free time to explore on your own, but since it’s a private tour, the exact itinerary is up to you. You’ll have about 7 hours total to explore Venice, walking the narrow alleyways and crossing bridges, finding charming viewpoints of the canal, and going on a gondola ride.

The guide, Janez, was fantastic! Great explanations for lots of interesting history and landmarks. Our whole group really enjoyed it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – bart, tour review

10. Trieste, Italy

ljubljana day tour

⏳ Tour Time : 10 hours 30 minutes

Trieste , Italy is a coastal city just across the border of Slovenia, just north of Piran, and only 1 hour from Ljubljana. This Italian city was actually part of Slovenia until 1918, at the end of World War I, but it definitely has an Italian vibe – with Roman statues around the main square and, grand, colorful buildings throughout the city.

This private tour (that includes only your group), takes you on a guided tour around the main attractions of the city, including the Piazza Unita Square and Capitol Hill. Then, you’ll head about 15 minutes outside of the city to Miramare Castle , a gorgeous estate right on the water, filled with beautiful rooms, architecture, gardens, and seaside views.

11. Plitvice Lake National Park, Croatia

Just south of Slovenia is the beautiful country of Croatia , which is home to the incredible Plitvice Lakes National Park . This park has an Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes section, with walking paths and trails, waterfalls galore, and rivers and streams throughout the park. In total, there are 16 lakes in the National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your guide will provide transportation for your private group, and take you to all the best spots in the park, while providing interesting commentary of what you are experiencing. And of course, since this is a private tour , it’s flexible to what your needs and wishes are.

Plitvice Lake National Park is almost 3 hours from Ljubljana, so it’s a long day with a lot of time in the car, but you still have plenty of time to enjoy the park.

We had an exceptional experience hiking and exploring the Plitvice National Park! Our guide Dino was PHENOMENAL- incredibly knowledgeable not just about the parks but about the history of Croatia and so much more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – a tripadvisor reviewer, tour review

Combo Tours

The last tours on this list offer different combos of the destinations listed above.

Tour to All 3 Caves: Skocjan + Postojna + Predjama : This private tour takes you from Ljubljana to Skocjan Caves and back, but since it’s a private excursion, you have the option to add on stops to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle as well, hitting up all three Slovenian caves in one day.

Lake Bled + Postojna + Predjama

This excursion combines a few different types of experiences – stunning Lake Bled, and then the popular Postojna cave and Predjama Castle, giving you two very different experiences on one day tour.

15 Best Day Trips from Ljubljana, Slovenia

Situated toward the center of the country and within easy reach of most of the best things to do, Slovenia’s charming capital city is a fantastic base for your time in the country–if you so choose, you can visit all of Slovenia’s top highlights on day trips from Ljubljana!

While we certainly recommend getting out of the capital city overnight if you can, if you’re working with limited time in Slovenia, you’ll have no problem hitting up many of the country’s gems via Ljubljana day trips.

Here are the best day trips from Ljubljana!

While organized day tours from Ljubljana (we’ll link well-reviewed options as applicable) and, in some cases, bus service, are excellent ways to get around the country, for many of these day trips, the absolute best way to get around with the most flexibility and ability to experience the destinations on your own terms is to rent a car.

Slovenia is an absolutely fantastic country to road trip, and that stands even in the case of mini-road trips from Ljubljana.

Plus, since in some cases these day trip destinations are close together, having your own rental car will allow you to mix-and-match spots based on your interests.

We recommend renting a small car through  Discover Cars , which will allow you to compare the prices and inclusions of multiple companies at the same time and choose the best car for you from there.

Skofja Loka

This fairytale village is one of the easiest day trips from Ljubljana for travelers hoping to discover the country independently, as it’s located less than an hour from Ljubljana by bus!

Built along the Sora River and overlooked by the beautiful Skofja Loka Castle, Skofja Loka is one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia, with a well-preserved medieval center to explore in addition to its castle, viewpoints, and one of the oldest bridges in Europe.

Cityscape of Skofja Loka from above with castle visible in the background, one of the best places to visit in Slovenia

Velika Planina

Without a doubt, Velika Planina is one of the most unique day trips from Ljubljana.

This beautiful, vividly green plateau in the Alps is where you can find the largest herdsmen settlement in Europe, complete with about 140 huts, and strolling among them and through the area makes for an unforgettable Ljubljana day trip.

If you’d like to see the shepherds and herds in action, plan your visit to Velika Planina for sometime between June and September.

Tiny, charming Piran is the crown jewel of Slovenia’s small slice of Adriatic coastline, and is one of our favorite places in the country!

Situated on a tiny peninsula that juts out into the sea, bite-sized Piran is the perfect size for a day trip, as you can hit up most of the best things to do in Piran, including soaking in the views from the town walls, visiting Tartini Square, and strolling along the coast, and still have time to hit the water and swim for a bit, with just a day in town!

If you’d rather not drive yourself, this fun tour combines Piran with a visit to both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave, and makes for a fantastic day spent exploring Slovenia.

Located north of Ljubljana, the small city of Kranj is a fantastic day trip for those looking to enjoy a quieter city in Slovenia (though Kranj is the 4th largest city in the country, it’s home to only around 37,000 people).

The best-known feature of Kranj is its series of underground war tunnels built to protect citizens from WWII bombings, which you can tour today.

Kranj is also home to beautiful streets, an interesting ossuary, and a couple of lovely viewpoints from which to admire the city.

Of all the day trips from Ljubljana listed here, this one is the biggest stretch to make, but Venice is such a bucket list destination that it’s worth mentioning!

It takes about 2.5-3 hours to drive from Ljubljana to Venice (be sure to check with your car rental company to ensure your contract allows you to cross into Italy), and we recommend getting an early start to avoid traffic.

Since Venice doesn’t allow cars in its center, you’ll need to park in Mestre and then take a ferry into Venice’s center–but since arriving in central Venice via ferry is a tourist experience in itself, it’s hardly a chore!

I’ll be quite honest: this is a long, tiring day trip, and it isn’t for everyone. However, if you’ve long dreamed of riding a gondola in Venice, strolling across the Rialto Bridge, marveling at the Bridge of Sighs, and staring in wonder at St. Mark’s Basilica, it just may be worth the effort for you!

Want to take a day trip to Venice from Ljubljana, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of complex logistics? This well-reviewed day tour is a great option, and will handle transportation for you!

Slovenia’s most famous tourist destination is one of the most popular day trips from Ljubljana, and for good reason!

While you’re there, be sure to rent a rowboat to experience tiny Bled Island for yourself, visit Bled Castle for phenomenal views over the lake, and relax on the shore.

If you’d like to let someone else handle the organization, this popular day trip also includes a visit to the Vintgar Gorge and a quick look at Skofja Loka, in addition to a tour of Lake Bled.

Lake Bohinj

Larger and a bit wilder than Lake Bled, but also incredibly beautiful, Lake Bohinj is another fantastic option for a day out on a lake in Slovenia.

Whether you want to go for a swim, rent a kayak, hike to a viewpoint, or some combination of them all, you can spend a fantastic day at Lake Bled.

We highly recommend making time for Savica Falls, which is located a short drive from Lake Bohinj and is one of our favorite waterfalls in Slovenia.

Like Lake Bled, a day in Lake Bohinj can also be combined with a visit to the Vintgar Gorge, as well!

Goldhorn Statue at Lake Bohinj in Slovenia

Vintgar Gorge

Filled with the flowing, ice-blue water of the Radovna River that slowly carved out craggy cliffs and a beautiful waterfall over the millennia, Vintgar Gorge makes for a fantastic place to spend a day!

The hike–if you can even call it that–is leisurely, situated along 1.6 kilometers of beautiful wooden boardwalks, and meant more for appreciating beautiful views and relaxing than for physical exertion.

Skocjan Caves

Home to an underground river worthy of a fantasy novel, incredible beauty, a secret waterfall, and a UNESCO World Heritage designation, a visit to the Skocjan Caves is a truly unforgettable experience while in Slovenia.

Horse-lovers will enjoy combining a visit to the Skocjan Caves with a visit to the nearby Lipica Stud Farm, while nature lovers may prefer to spend extra time after their cave tour hiking the trails in and around the cave system.

Bovec/Soca River Valley

Located in the absolutely stunning Soca Valley , Bovec is nicknamed the “adventure capital of Slovenia” for good reason–there is no shortage of unforgettable adventures to have here!

If you have been dreaming of going whitewater rafting in Slovenia , this is the place to do it.

While hiking and waterfall chasing are also perfectly wonderful and reliable options, you can also consider kayaking, and/or canyoning when planning to spend a day in the Soca River Valley!

Kayakers in the Soca River in Slovenia, one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia

Logar Valley

Known for being one of the most pristine glacial valleys in Europe, the Logar Valley of Slovenia is almost overwhelming in its beauty.

The area is home to gorgeous waterfalls (including the stunning Rinka Falls, where water falls 90 meters over a cappuccino-colored cliff before landing in a turquoise pool), beautiful hiking trails, lush greenery, and delicious food.

If you’re looking for idyllic nature, you can’t go wrong with heading to Logar Valley on a Ljubljana day trip.

Tucked into the western corner of Slovenia, Brda is one of Slovenia’s top wine regions, earning the nickname the “Tuscany of Slovenia”.

With adorable villages, endless rolling hills covered in grapevines, and excellent vineyards to enjoy, Brda makes a fantastic independent day trip from Ljubljana.

Postojna Cave + Predjama Castle

While several other of these best day trips from Ljubljana can be combined with others–Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bled, for example–Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle seem silly to separate at all, given that each takes less than a full day to enjoy and that they’re located a mere 15 minutes apart by car.

Predjama Castle is the most famous (and possibly most photogenic) castle in Slovenia, well-known for its incredible location–it was built right into the mouth of a cave!

Once you finish up there, head to Postojna Cave–the most popular cave in Slovenia–for a train ride through the underworld and some absolutely stunning cave views.

This popular day trip combines both attractions and is a wonderful option!

Vipava Wine Region

Located just south of the Brda wine region, and a bit bigger to boot, the Vipava wine region is another of Slovenia’s celebrated wine regions, having gained prominence in the last few decades.

If you’d rather not drive yourself–all the better to be able to taste as much as you like, guilt-free–this day tour to the Vipava wine region that leaves from Ljubljana is a great option.

#1 Lake Bled  Day trip from Ljubljana ( + Lake Bohinj)

Let’s start with a classic. Ljubljana to Lake Bled is a short an easy drive to be able to admire what is consider the jewel of the country, a small lake with intense colors, mountains, a castle on a precipice as well as a charming small island.

Slovenia Day Trips Ljubljana to Lake Bled

  • Lake Bled itself with a visit to the Lake Bled Castle that offers amazing views of the Lake from above
  • Lake Bled island, that you can visit via a tour on a pletna boat
  • The absolutely stunning Vintgar gorge where platforms allow you to walk in the canyon
  • The wilder Lake Bohinj, 40min drive from Lake Bled with also many beautiful natural wonders
  • If you plan on staying more than one day, check out my Guide of things to do in Lake Bled .

Time on the road: 2 to 4 hours depending on the chosen activities

  • Drive to Lake Bled from Ljubljana – Motorway almost the whole time
  • Option 1 – Focus on Lake Bled with a visit to Lake Bled Castle, a boat ride to Bled island – then head to Vintgar Gorge towards the end of the afternoon for a great walk
  • Option 2 – Overview of the region – First stop at Vintgar Gorge to complete the walk. Then head to lake Bled, discover the views from the castle. Skip the boat and head to Lake Bohinj. Enjoy the views and head to the other  end to climb to the Savica Waterfall .

Organized Day Tours

I found a day tour where the program gives you a great overview of the region with a little bit of each location: views of lake Bled from the castle and from a boat, Vintgar gorge plus views of Lake Bohinj. And on the way back to the capital you even stop at the scenic medieval village of Skofja Loka.

#2 Slovenia Day Trip from Ljubljana to Caves & Predjama castle

Slovenia is home to many magnificent karst caves. The 2 most famous caves are Postojna with easy access thanks a a train system and the Skocjan caves, which are listed on the Unesco World Heritage list. And in the same region you can also visit the well-preserve cave castle of Predjama .

Slovenia Day Trip from Ljubljana to Postojna Cave

  • The magnificent Postojna cave – the 1km ride and then the 1h walk within different chambers admiring stalactites and stalagmites
  • The Unesco caves of Skocjan – less decorated but very impressive in terms of size with a canyon and river. On one of the walk, you will walk on a bridge above the precipice!
  • Predjama the best preserved cave castle in the world. Build above and in front of a cave, it was perfect for defense but not so good for comfort of life.

Time on the road: 2 to 3 hours depending on the activities

  • Drive down to Postojna first to enjoy the very first tour of the day that is normally quieter – plan 1h30
  • Then head to Predjama castle which is just 15minutes away – explore the structure and how it fits inside the rock.
  • In the afternoon if you are not too tired, enjoy the main trail at the Skocjan caves and be blown away by nature
  • Book your tickets before on their official website – combined tickets are possible

For your day trips you have to choose between Postojna and Skojcan

First option: Postojna On this typical Slovenia Tour from Ljubljana, you will visit both Postojna cave and Predjama Castle. Everything is arranged, you just have to sit back, relax and follow their lead

Check out program and Book

Second Option: Skocjan

There are not many options departing Ljubljana for that one. Most of them are combined with the Lipica Stud farm and its museum. It is really worth it to discover these impressive caves!

#3 Ljubljana Day Trip to Soca River & VRSIC Pass

Towering peaks, trees, river, lakes… the Soca Valley is the 1000 shades of green area. A little bit further to the West, I think it is really worth the longer drive!

Slovenia Ljubljana Day Trip to Soca River

  • Lake Jasna at the beginning of the climb to the VRSIC pass – 2 emerald color lakes with unobstructed views of the towering peaks of the Julian Alps
  • the 50 sharp bends on the Vrsic pass road with incredible views of the summits
  • The drive down the Soca Valley which takes you along the Soca River and its emerald color

Time on the road: At least 5 hours with many short stops along the way

  • Drive on the mortorway towards Bovec – do not keep going on motorway as it goes through Italy – Turn towards the Vrsic pass
  • Enjoy the drive up and stop at the parking along the road for great views And stop at the pass
  • Drive down on the other side and along the Soca river towards Bovec – stop at the many bridges to see the different sides of the emerald river – sometimes wide and transparent, sometimes narrow and intense green
  • All the best stops and their GPS coordinates are indicated in my eBook: The Road Trip Guide – Slovenia

Take this same road with a guide that can show you some of the best views. You won’t be able to stop as much but you can just seat and admire the scenery that is phenomenal the whole way as you don’t have to focus on the road.

Need to rent a car in Slovenia?

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:   Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
  • Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
  • Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!

#4 Day Tour from Ljubljana to Piran and Coast

To the south of Slovenia, is the small coast (under 50km). There you can visit the harbour town of Koper, the fishing village of Izola or the most famous old town: Piran. Located on a peninsula, it had a vibrant history around salt trade and was protected by fortifications, which offer today one of the best views in Slovenia.

Day Tour from Ljubljana to Piran and Slovenia Coast

  • Koper, the port town and the views from the top of the bell tower
  • Izola, the fishing village
  • The peninsula of Piran with its Italian influence and great views from the fortification or the top of the bell tower
  • The salt pans near Portoroz

Time on the road: 3h – mostly mortorways

  • Stop at Izola and enjoy the marina as well as a nice walk by the water
  • Drive to Piran, park at the big parking lot outside the town and take the shuttle to reach inside – walk along the river, discover the Venitian houses, climb to the church and explore the fortification walls – plus enjoy some great seafood!
  • If you are interested, you can also make a detour to see the salt pans on the other side of Portoroz.
  • Learn more on my guide of things to do in Piran and the Slovenia Coast

Unesco Tour from Ljubljana to Idrija Slovenia

  • The 16th century Gewerkenegg Castle uphill from the town center. Visit this great building that has been turned into a museum. The team is really nice and happy to answer all your questions. They provide a lot of documents to accompany your visit. There are sections about mercury, mining, war history as well as the lace culture and industry that developed in the region.

  • Then head down inside the old shaft where you will learn about the working conditions and tools.
  • If you don’t mind a busy day, you can do Postojna and Predjama in the morning and then drive to Idrija

#6 Slovenia Gastronomy tour from Ljubljana

Slovenia has several regions producing wine. To the South in Brda around Smartno and Dobrovno as well as towards the East around Ptuj and Maribor where the landscape is less mountainous. It also has a lot of delicacies to taste, especially honey and apple juice

Slovenia Gastronomy tour from Ljubljana - bees

Choose either a morning or afternoon tours to discover several traditional produces of Slovenia: cheese, honey, jellies, apple juice…

#7 Slovenia Tour to Logar Valley

Want a bit more of mountains, head to the less touristic Logar Valley in the North, close to the border with Austria. Once again you will be blown away by the mountains, and the shades of green. Plus you can drive around and discover charming traditional farms with delicious products

Slovenia Tour to Logar Valley

  • Logar valley (Logarska Dolina) is the most famous one in the area and gives its name to the whole region around it – It is wide and flat at the bottom with a wall of mountains at the end, making it very photogenic
  • Robanov Kot is the valley just South of. Not as well known but with also a lot of charm (and free entry). You can’t drive to the end, you would have to choose to walk.
  • Solcavska Panoramic road is being developed for tourist. It is a small road leading to higher grounds with fantastic views and lots of traditional farms to visit.

Time on the road: 4 to 6 hours depending on activities

  • En route to the Logar Valley, you can stop in the charming town of Kamnik and get to the ruins of the old castle for great views.
  • Optionally take a small detour to discover Robanov Kot
  • Enter Logarska Dolina and admire the open view. You can walk along the river or continue to the end where you can complete a 15min steep ascent to the Rinka Waterfall.
  • Take the time to drive the Solcavska Panoramic road

Check out tours to the Logar Valley Check out program and Book

# 8 Excursion from Ljubljana to Venice

Want to discover more than Slovenia. Venise is only 2h30 hours away, so it is possible to enjoy an introduction to the famous water city.

Excursion from Ljubljana to Venice

Time on the road: 5h

  • Drive South West to Italy and Venice
  • Make sure the conditions of your rental allow you to drive abroad

To avoid complication with the rental car, it might be easier to book a driver/guide that will organise everything and you cant rest in the car and arrive refreshed to explore Venice!

# 9 Maribor & East Slovenia – Day trips from Ljubljana by train

Do you enjoy cities? Well You can head East to visit both Maribor, the second town in Slovenia and Ptuj the oldest recorded town in Slovenia.

Just be aware that Maribor is an acquired taste. It does not have the same charme and atmosphere of Ljubljana. This first impression is often not that good but once you walk around, you start understanding its appeal. Give it a chance!

Maribor Slovenia Day trips from Ljubljana by train

  • Maribor’s city center with the castle, the Franciscan church and the old vine by the river – more info on the Maribor article
  • Walk up Maribor’s Piramida hill – where you can see the local vines and admire unobstructed views of the city and the surroundings
  • Ptuj is a charming old medieval town. Its castle it not the best in terms of architecture but it houses a great museum and from the grounds you can enjoy great views of the town.

Time on the road: 3h30

  • Drive to Maribor, stroll in the city center, visit the Franciscan church and climb to the top of Piramida (1h/1h15 from city center return)
  • Drive to Ptuj, enjoy its charming center, climb to the castle and explore the museum. Don’t miss the collection of musical instruments!

Tour by Train

Another option is to take the train from Ljubljana to Maribor. You won’t be able to add Ptuj to your itinerary but it is a nice quiet day for those who like exploring cities

Book your train ticket

Combine with Ptuj the oldest recorded town in Slovenia

This organized tour takes you to Maribor, Ptuj and the charming wine region of Jerezalem.

Note: Some reviews are not that good but not because of the tour itself, rather because people don’t enjoy Maribor. As  I said before, it is an acquired taste.

Where to Stay in Ljubljana

In order to bring you better information, I performed surprised visits to hotels in the hours between guest to be able to visit hotels, check out the staff and the rooms. I had selected 6 hotels that had ratings given by guests above 9/10. And I am introducing 5 of them to you (since I was very poorly received at the last one and was not able to visit it).

Luxury at Lesar Hotel Angel

Accommodations Ljubljana hotels - lesar hotel

Located in the pedestrian streets of Ljubljana, it is close to all the attractions. It is set up in an old Buildings typical of the area. So it is quite fun to navigate inside with all the corridors and staircases. Staff was really welcoming and charming, decor was well designed with a great cocooning effect. One of the room even has its own terrace. Loved it!

CHECK PRICES & BOOK ROOM

Castle views at Cubo Hotel

Accommodations Ljubljana hotels - Cubo Hotel

Located just outside of the pedestrian area, so with easy access to all attractions, the Cubo hotel is modern with lots of light in the rooms. Many of them have views of the castle. Staff was warm and keen to help. I stayed a long time in the lobby because, of course, arriving guests had priority over my surprised visit to I was able to see how they were taken care of and it was great.

The Adorable Adora Hotel

Accommodations Ljubljana hotels - Adora Hotel

For a good price hotel very close to all the attractions (just at the limit of the pedestrian area), I recommend the Adora Hotel. The value for money is really good. Rooms are simple, clean and bright. All you need for a good night sleep.

I had the opportunity to chat a little with the staff. They were very helpful and friendly.

Reviews say that breakfast is great, but at 3pm I as not able to verify.

Modern Chic at Urban Hotel

Accommodations Ljubljana hotels - Urban hotel

Located not far from the Skyscraper building, the Urban Hotel is a practical option with good value for money, modern design and spacious rooms. Here as well, staff and manager were really friendly and welcoming. Note: don’t be scared by the outside, it is all new inside 🙂

Fun stay at the Prison Hostel Celica Art

Ljubljana hostels - prison hostel ljubljana slovenia 2

Want a fun night in Ljubljana, head to the Prison Hostel. You read right. It used to be a prison. One floor haas traditional bunker beds dormitories. But the best options is the sleep in one of the cells. They have all been decorated by different artists and look very different.  I was able to see several of them with paintings, circular bed or zen ambiance. The common area are also very nice to relax and discuss.

Note: Of course bathrooms are shared.

#1 Ljubljana: Slovenia Day Tour to Bled, Postojna, and Predjama

ljubljana day tour

🚐 Book your Lake Bled tour here ⏰ Time: Full day (10 hours) 💸 Cost: €98

You’ll get to experience the stunning Lake Bled. Hop on a traditional ‘pletna’ boat to explore the picturesque Bled Island.

Then you’ll hike up a fairly steep path up to Bled Castle and soak up the fantastic views overlooking the lake.

After that, you’ll journey to the cliffside Predjama Castle, and explore the beautiful renaissance architecture of the historical fortress.

Finally, take a mini-train into the mysterious Postojna Cave and take in the incredible natural cave formations.

This guided tour from Ljubljana is a fun way to really see a lot of different Lake Bled highlights.

You can easily spend multiple days in Lake Bled. But at least this way you’ll get a taste of a few of the highlights!

#2 From Ljubljana: Lake Bled and Bohinj Trip

ljubljana day tour

🎟️ Book your Lake Bled tour here (this tour is likely to sell out) ⏰ Time: Full day (9.5 hours) 💸 Cost: €85

Similar to the first tour, on this one you’ll stop by and visit the beautiful Lake Bled in the Julian Alps. You will wander by the lake and take in the views of the mountains. You’ll also get to see Bled Island which is located in the middle of the lake.

Finally you’ll explore the medieval castle that is on top of a cliff overlooking Lake Bled.

Then you’ll make your way through the valley of Triglav National Park. Where you’ll discover our favourite place in Slovenia: Lake Bohinj.

It’s a lot less crowded and touristy than Lake Bled. It also offers a bunch of amazing hikes like Mostnica Gorge and Savica Waterfall.

This day trip from Ljubljana actually finishes off with a short hike up to Savica Waterfall. It’s one of the best viewpoints in the Bohinj area.

You’ll also get the chance to try some local food in Bohinj before making the journey back through the valley and back to Ljubljana.

#3 From Ljubljana: Day trip to Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge

ljubljana day tour

🎟️ Book your Lake Bled day trip here ⏰ Time: Full day (10.5 hours) 💸 Cost: €86

This is another easy-to-follow tour through the breathtaking landscapes of Slovenia! The adventure begins with a comfortable ride from Ljubljana to the beautiful resort town of Bled, located in the Julian Alps.

Here, we’ll journey up to the castle located on top of a cliff above Lake Bled. From the castle’s terraces, you’ll get breathtaking views of the lake and its tiny island.

Then, you’ll board a traditional boat and sail across to the only true island in Slovenia (and it’s surprisingly very small).

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also walk along the wooden planks that make the viewpoint overlooking Vintgar Gorge and the River Radovna running through the canyon and ending at the beautiful Šum Waterfall.

After a delicious lunch at a typical Alpine restaurant, you’ll head to the glacial lake at Bohinj in Triglav National Park. Here, you can cool off with a swim or explore the lake by foot or canoe.

Finally, this day trip from Ljubljana finishes with a visit to the well-preserved town of Skofja Loka .

In Skofja Loka you can wander around the medieval town center, which is overlooked by a historic castle and monastery.

Do-it-yourself day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

Are guided tours not your thing but still want to explore the beautiful Lake Bled? Whether you prefer taking public transportation, renting a car, or driving your own, we’ve got a fun itinerary to keep you busy for a full day.

The best part is that it’s actually quite easy to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled by public transport.

Especially during the busy months of the year (spring through fall) buses and trains run almost all day.  You can read more about the different ways to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled here .

Arriving at Lake Bled

ljubljana day tour

Once you arrive at Lake Bled you’ll be blown away by this incredible lake that has put Slovenia on the map of places to travel to. You’ll quickly notice the little island in the middle of Lake Bled which is known as Bled Island .

This island is one of the reasons why Lake Bled has become so famous because it’s very unique!

There’s a good chance you’ve seen a picture of the famous Church of the Mother of God on the Lake before.

Actually, later in this post, we have a little surprise and hike recommendation for you to do that offers the best views of Lake Bled and Bled Island.

Hike up to Velika Osojnica Viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled

ljubljana day tour

Assuming you take the bus, we recommend you get off at the ‘Bohinjska Bela’ bus stop, not ‘Lake Bled’. It’s an extra 7 minutes by bus and two stops past the Lake Bled bus stop. There’s also free parking in the village if you go by car.

From there you can hike up to the Velika Osojnica Viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled.

This hike was probably the highlight of our trip to this beautiful spot in Slovenia. Partially because this hike feels a lot more local and less touristy than the rest of the area, and partially because of the incredible views.

The reason we recommend getting off at the Bohinjska Bela bus stop is so you can do the hike from the back side where most tourists don’t go . You can read all about the Osojnica Viewpoint hike here.

The hike takes you through a village, up through the forest, and then – out of nowhere – this incredible viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled and Bled Island comes into view.

The best part is that we had the whole viewpoint to ourselves – probably because a lot of people either only go to Mala Osojnica Viewpoint or Ostrica Viewpoint.

But it’s worth going all the way to the Velika Osojnica Viewpoint because that’s where you truly get the best view of Bled and Bled Island.

After you take in the view, instead of doing the hike like we did and going back to the start you can actually continue down towards Lake Bled. You’ll end up coming down right at the foot of Lake Bled!

Try the local Lake Bled Cream Cake

ljubljana day tour

Once you get down from Velika Osojnica on the Lake Bled side, you’ll find a beautiful area of the lake where you can swim, relax, and sun tan. Next to the lake, there’s Restavracija Camping Bled where you can sit down and grab a bite to eat.

They do everything from pizza and burgers to risotto and soup. Because of its location, this restaurant can get quite busy but it’s worth stopping by to at least try the “famous” Lake Bled cream cake .

A little taste of heaven made by crust, custard, and cream is the best way to describe this cake. It is local to the area so it’s good to try when in Bled. It also goes well with a cup of coffee or tea.

You can grab the cake and enjoy it on one of the picnic tables outside of the restaurant if the weather is good. There you’ll also get a great view of the lake!

Go for a swim and relax by Velika Zaka beach at Lake Bled

Since time is limited it’s worth enjoying the west side of Lake Bled while you’re over here. Right next to the restaurant, there’s a nice little sandy beach (that does get busy) where you can suntan and even swim around in a blocked-off area in the lake.

On a warm sunny day, it’s so nice to chill and relax at Velika Zaka Beach. It’s a beautiful spot with a view of Bled Island and all of the Julian Alps behind Lake Bled. It’s a nice little stop on this do-it-yourself Lake Bled day trip!

Lake Bled boat trip to Bled Island

Photo of Bled Island in the middle of Lake Bled.

Right next to the beach, you can see a little boat rental right on Lake Bled . For €20 you can rent a boat or paddle board for an hour and row to Bled Island and back.

You truly don’t need more than an hour to row to Bled Island, walk around the tiny little island, and go see Church of the Mother on God Lake.

Then you can paddle your way back to the boat rental all in under an hour.

You can easily rent a boat or paddle board for longer but with only the day to see everything around Lake Bled an hour should be plenty of time to enjoy the lake, get pictures, and see Bled Island!

Walk back around Lake Bled and grab some food

After hiking Velika Osojnica, trying some Lake Bled Cream Cake, relaxing by the beach, and visiting Bled Island it’s time to make your way to the touristy side of the lake.

You can walk around the lake in either direction. We recommend going along the south side of the lake so you can stop at Restavracija Sova Bled .

That’s where you can get a delicious Slovenian meal. It’s a little fancier and more expensive food but the view and the quality of the food are worth it.

Another option (that’s only about 100 meters up the road) if you’re looking for something a little cheaper and very traditional, you can stop by Monika Poklukar . A cozy little local restaurant serving up all sorts of traditional dishes.

If you’re not hungry you can just enjoy the views and walk around the lake and take in all the views. There are plenty of restaurants on the main side of the lake where you can grab a bite to eat later.

Stop by the Heart of Lake Bled

ljubljana day tour

Once you’ve finally made it back around the lake to the busier side of Lake Bled there’s one little stop on the lake that’s worth visiting.

Right at the front of the lake, there’s a big red heart that’s facing the lake. It’s a really pretty viewpoint and a good spot to take a picture of Lake Bled.

It’s hard to say how busy it’s going to be since it is right in the heart (😉) of where most tourists and travellers go. If you’re lucky and can grab a picture without waiting too long then it’s worth it!

Hike up to Bled Castle and enjoy the views

One of the last things to do on this day trip to Lake Bled is to visit Bled Castle up on the cliffs above the Lake. It’s probably the most touristy part of Lake Bled and for good reason, because it’s absolutely stunning.

You can follow this trail map from the Lake Bled Heart Viewpoint up to Bled Castle . It’s less than a 1 km walk up and shouldn’t take more than 25-30 minutes.

Once you’re up at Bled Castle you can either hang out and enjoy the views or you can buy a ticket to enter the castle.  You can learn more about Bled Castle here and even buy tickets online beforehand (€13 per adult).

As we mentioned before, it’s probably the most touristy area in Lake Bled but for good reason. That’s why we recommend going later in the day like this.

The other option is to also go early in the morning before most people arrive but since we recommend the Velika Osojnica hike as the first thing we suggest you finish the day at Bled Castle.

And that’s it for this day trip! Once you’re done admiring the castle you can make your way back down and then either go for dinner or head straight back to Ljubljana.

Quick overview of a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

The do-it-yourself day trip to Lake Bled can be a little overwhelming since there’s so much to do and see. But if you follow this itinerary, we’re sure you’ll have a great time!

As we mentioned earlier, public transport runs from the early hours of the morning until late at night during the busier months (spring through fall).

If you have a car then even better because then you are completely in charge of your own schedule.

To summarize and simplify, here’s our suggested itinerary for a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled:

  • Drive or take a bus from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. If you take the bus remember to get off at Bohinjska Bela bus stop (2 stops/7 minutes past the normal Lake Bled stop).
  • From Bohinjska Bela, hike up to Velika Osojnica and take in the view of Lake Bled and Bled Lake. From the viewpoint, you can hike down towards the lake.
  • Enjoy a taste of Bled at Restavracija Camping Bled where you can try the Lake Bled Cream Cake
  • Relax, swim, and suntan at the beach next to the restaurant.
  • Take a boat or a paddleboard out to Bled Island and see the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake .
  • Then walk around Lake Bled back to town where you can stop at a restaurant for a bite to eat. Restavracija Sova Bled and Monika Poklukar are both on the way back to town as you walk around the lake.
  • Check out the Lake Bled Heart Viewpoint and snap a picture at this iconic spot.
  • Hike up to Bled Castle where you can roam the castle grounds and take in the views or actually enter the castle and explore the historic castle.
  • Grab a bite to eat in Bled before you make your way back to Ljubljana by car, bus, or train and finish off the day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled!

When you break it down like this it’s really easy to follow and you truly get to see everything around Lake Bled.

Other related questions about a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

Is it best to go on a guided tour to lake bled or to do it yourself.

The main difference between doing the day trip yourself and going on a guided tour is that if you go on your own, you’ll have more flexibility and more of a local experience.

On the other hand, if you go on a guided tour, all the planning is done for you. You will see all the popular spots but you will also get to see more on a guided tour and go to some other spots that you can’t do with public transport in just one day.

There are pros and cons to both ways of visiting Lake Bled and it’s just up to you to see which way you prefer!

Hopefully, this guide helps planning your day if you end up doing Lake Bled by public transport and enjoying it by yourself or with a few friends!

When is the best time to visit Lake Bled?

Since Lake Bled is a very outdoorsy destination and because of the weather, we would say that between May-October is the best time to visit.

May and October are going to be a lot less touristy but the weather can be more unpredictable during those months.

We had a week full of rain in early October but during some years, October can be super nice and sunny.

July and August are of course fantastic months to visit Lake Bled because they are the warmest months. This does mean more tourists and longer wait times, though.

With the day trips from Ljubljana to Lake Bled in this post, you have a few activities that should help you avoid some of the crowds and then a few highlights that will be a bit busier with people – so a good mix of busy and less-busy activities.

Honestly, anytime between May and October, we’re sure you’ll have a wonderful time hiking around and exploring all the iconic spots near Lake Bled.

Is a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled worth it?

If you love the outdoors, want to hike a little bit, and see one of Slovenia’s wonders then a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is totally worth it.

The fact that you can get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled in less than an hour also makes it a super convenient day trip.

There is so much to do and see, and some amazing hikes around Lake Bled that your trip will be filled with viewpoints and fun activities around the lake including a visit to the famous Bled Castle.

If you have a full day to explore somewhere outside of Ljubljana then Lake Bled should be at the top of that list!

Is Lake Bled touristy?

Lake Bled is very touristy. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Slovenia with over 1 million overnight stays a year.

Thankfully there are few places you can go to avoid crowds at times, and if you travel during the shoulder season (April through June and September through October) you’ll get a lot fewer people than if you travel during peak season (the summer months).

What currency do they use in Slovenia?

Slovenia is part of the European Union and uses Euro (€). Most places accept bank cards in Slovenia now but it’s still good to have at least a little bit of Euro cash with you in case you stumble upon some small shop or cafe that may not take bank cards.

What’s the best way to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled?

The cheapest and most convenient way to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is by bus. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to get from Ljubljana Bus Station to the lake in Bled.

Buses during peak season run from 5 am until 11 pm and tickets cost anywhere between €6-8 each way.

There are buses that run all day so you can just show up at the bus station, buy a ticket there or online, and jump on the bus.

Is Lake Bled safe?

Slovenia and Lake Bled are very safe in general. The only thing you should worry about is getting lost on a hike, getting a sunburn or maybe dropping your phone in the lake. All in all Lake Bled is very very safe and there’s nothing you should worry about.

Of course, you should always use common sense but, in general, Lake Bled is very safe.

Jon Bon Jovi says 'Forever' pays homage to The Beatles, his wife and the working class

ljubljana day tour

As the lights faded in a ballroom of the Los Angeles Convention Center, a wallop of guitar and drums rang through the room.

Jon Bon Jovi, sleek in all black, took his rightful place center stage as drummer Tico Torres, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Hugh McDonald and guitarists John Shanks and Phil X launched into an anthemic intro of “Whoa-oh-oh-ohs.”

The audience who had come to honor Bon Jovi’s philanthropic efforts at the annual MusiCares gala glanced around with puzzled looks.

Was this a new Bon Jovi song? If so, were they debuting it as the opening salvo at a glitzy Grammys charity event when the MusiCares honoree doesn't usually perform until the end of the night? And was that Paul McCartney sitting at a front table pumping his first along to the very-Bon-Jovi chorus?

Yes, yes and yes.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“Legendary,” the first single from Bon Jovi’s 16 th studio album “Forever,” out June 7, received its christening in a room that included McCartney , Bruce Springsteen , Melissa Etheridge, Shania Twain and numerous other music VIPs.

A few weeks later, the infectious pop rock song lyrically rooted in Bon Jovi's trademarks of loyalty, friendship and a blue-collar ethos began its steady chart climb , eventually landing in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales and Adult Contemporary charts.

It was an auspicious rollout for the band’s first album since “2020” as well as the first for frontman Jon Bon Jovi since undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022.

During a recent interview about the band’s four-part Hulu documentary, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” Bon Jovi, 62, also shared some insight into a few of the songs on “Forever.”

Bon Jovi is still rocking the talk box

The second single from the album, the rhythmically pumping “Living Proof," is coated with another Bon Jovi hallmark – the talk box, which the band reinvigorated from its ‘70s-era origins on its signature smash, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and bowed to again for 2000’s “It’s My Life.”

“I will give Richie (Sambora) full compliments for commandeering the talk box in 1986,” Bon Jovi says of the band’s original guitarist and frequent song collaborator . “We both knew it of course from (Peter) Frampton and Joe Walsh, but I would think from ’86 forward that instrument belongs to Richie and to Bon Jovi using it again.”

Bon Jovi is careful to credit his forebears for the distinctive wonky sound created by the mouth device and says he returns to the credo his mother told him: “Find out who your influence's influences were … because now if anyone says oh, the talk box, that’s Bon Jovi. No.”

Jon Bon Jovi writes a love letter to his wife

The ninth track on “Forever,” the piano ballad “I Wrote You a Song,” is a sweet testimony of love shaded with insecurity.

“How could it ever be beautiful enough?” Bon Jovi sings in a slightly strained voice.

The target of his affection is obvious, he says. His wife of 35 years , Dorothea.

Words including “I can’t give you the ocean or the sky/the wonders of the world can’t compare to you/I did the only thing I know how to do – I wrote you a song,” as well as the melody, came to Bon Jovi in the middle of the night.

“I had a notebook next to my bed,” he recalls, “which I sometimes do when I’m in a place where I’m writing and I know that position well – in your underwear on the side of the bed, asleep with a pen in your hand and scribbling and you wake up to see every single word of that first verse and the melody written.”

Bon Jovi shared the lyrics with co-writer Billy Falcon but still fretted about landing the perfect title.

“Billy said, ‘I Wrote You a Song’ and I was like, ‘Ah!.’ The simplest thing you could possibly say.”

Bon Jovi salutes The Beatles’ ‘A Day in the Life’

The dozen songs on “Forever” balance between ballads and barroom stompers. “Seeds” is one of the most memorable for its hook and fantastical ending that pays homage to The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.”

Bon Jovi says he was inspired to write the song while looking out of the window of his Manhattan apartment and watching the people wandering around in a park. “There are 100 stories happening right now and these people don’t even know that their stories are intersecting at this moment,” he remembers thinking at the time.

He credits his “current self-help way” of “trying to get back to joy” for inspiring the image of seeds “trying to find our place in the weeds.”

The song rockets to a swirling strings-and-drums climax that is reminiscent of The Beatles’ ingenious concoction that caps their “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. “Seeds” wraps with a sustained chord, similar to the one that famously closes “A Day in the Life.”

“From inception, I knew what I wanted (with the song) and it was absolutely ‘A Day in the Life,’” Bon Jovi says. He enlisted noted composer David Campbell to arrange the strings.

“I full-on wanted the George Martin, Beatles-esque climb. And I think we achieved it,” Bon Jovi says.

Jon Bon Jovi is hardly a 'Hollow Man'

The closing song on “Forever,” the contemplative “Hollow Man,” might concern fans with its ruminative lyrics over mournful slide guitar.

“What do you sing when the song’s been sung?/Who do you fight when the war is won?/What do you write when the book is done?” Bon Jovi wonders, then later in the song, “How does it work when the words don’t come?”

It might sound like a declaration of defeat, but Bon Jovi isn’t swaggering into the sunset.

Touring remains uncertain because of his self-mandate that his voice is fit enough to perform a 2 ½-hour concert four nights a week. But he’s continuing to rebuild his vocal strength and maintain his optimism.

“Every day,” Bon Jovi says, “I work at it.”
