About Tikal National Park

Tikal National Park, known as Parque Nacional Tikal to locals, is a 222 square mile (575 square kilometers) preserve recognized as a top-tier UNESCO heritage site for both the Tikal historical ruins as well as the rich natural biodiversity of the surrounding jungle. Tikal is one of the most important archaeological complexes left by the Maya civilization. The ancient remains found at Tikal National Park show the evolution of Mayan society from hunter-gathering to farming. Learn more about Tikal’s UNESCO status .

Tikal Location

Tikal National Park is located in Northern Guatemala in the Petén department which adjoins Mexico and Belize. The closest town is Flores, about a 90-minute drive southwest of the park.

Tikal National Park is composed of a unique jungle known as the Maya Biosphere Reserve characterized by kapok, silk, cedar, and mahogany trees.

Tikal Highlights:

  • Climb Temple IV, the tallest pre-Colombian structure in the Americas (270 feet, 70 meters) first hand.
  • Learn about the significance and splendor of the Maya civilization.
  • Experience the diverse Maya Biosphere Reserve, home to a wide range of flora and fauna, over 250 species of birds, jaguars and monkeys.

My wife and I used Old Town for two different tours (Tikal day trip and Actatenago overnight) and were equally impressed with both. The guides were very professional, spoke excellent English, and all aspects of the trip felt high quality and organized. The shop is located right off the main square in Antigua, very convenient to most hotels. Above all, we were very impressed at how punctual, responsive and detail-oriented the company was. We have frequently had tour companies be very late to pickup times without word or communicate very little information on organizational details. Old Town was excellent in this regard. As an example, our Tikal trip driver was early to pick us up from our hotel (a true rarity) and immediately gave us an information packet with all time, ticket, and air travel info. I would highly recommend this outfitter to anyone visiting the area!

In most cases, we suggest that our clients take the local flight from Guatemala City to Flores. From Flores, we arrange private transport to the Tikal National Park, approximately 45 minutes. For those DIY travelers with plenty of time or on a tighter budget, there are coach bus options that take approximately 12 hours.

The high season in Guatemala tends to be North America’s winter months. Generally, the weather is drier with clear skies starting in mid-October and running until mid-April.

The Tikal National Park entrance fee is $22 (USD) or 150 Quetzals per day per. If you choose a Tikal Tour with Old Town Outfitters your park entrance fees will be covered in advance.

Can I use $USD, Euros, etc?The local currency is called the Quetzal (ket-zahl) and is roughly 7.5 to 1 USD. You may find that you can use USD in some establishments in Antigua and other touristy spots, but Q is the preferred currency in Guatemala.

There are plenty of places to see and experience near the Tikal National Park whether you are looking for more Mayan ruins, relaxing on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, exploring ancient caves, jungle hiking, or even crossing into Belize. If you’re interested in expanding your Tikal adventure, allow us to craft a custom tour for you .

(B)= Breakfast, (L)= Lunch, (D)= Dinner

Friday, February 14, 2025: Depart home | Arrive Villahermosa, MEXICO Depart home for Villahermosa International Airport (VSA) where you will be met upon arrival at the airport and transferred as a group to our hotel. For those arriving independently, a taxi can be hired for the short drive into town. Overnight at the 4-star Hyatt Regency Villahermosa for two nights.

Saturday, February 15: Comalcalco | Introductory lecture | Welcome dinner Set out for Comalcalco, the westernmost known Maya site, and the only Maya city built with bricks of baked clay instead of stone. The site comprises the North Square, Great Acropolis, and Acropolis of the East, and it thrived as an agricultural center specializing in cacao (the seeds from which cocoa, cocoa butter, and chocolate are made). After lunch we return to our hotel and have some time at leisure before gathering for an introductory lecture and our welcome dinner. (B,L,D)

Sunday, February 16: La Venta Park | Palenque Visit La Venta Park to see a magnificent outdoor collection of stone sculpture that originally came from the Olmec site of La Venta. The Olmec were one of the earliest cultures in Mesoamerica, preceding the Maya by centuries. Their monumental stone carvings and strange mythological beings puzzle archaeologists to this day. After lunch, drive to Palenque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the great western capitals of classic Maya civilization that some have called “the Paris of the Maya.” We will check-in to our charming hotel and have time for relaxation, exploring the surrounding lush forest, and swimming in the unusual pool. Overnight at the 3-star Chan-Kah Resort Village for two nights . (B,L,D)

Monday, February 17: Palenque | Jungle trail walk | Palenque site museum Explore Palenque’s many exquisite examples of 7th- and 8th-century Maya architecture, including the Temple of the Inscriptions, Palace, Temples of the Cross Group, Temples XIX and XXI, and much more. We finish the morning walking a beautiful downhill jungle trail, across waterfalls and hidden ruins, to get a true sense of the rainforest and all its beauty. After lunch at an outdoor, palm thatch restaurant, visit the Palenque site museum (pending reopening), with many world famous pieces of Maya ceramics, jades, and stone carving. (B,L,D)

Tuesday, February 18: AM at leisure | Bonampak | Frontera Corozal Enjoy some time at leisure, perhaps to stroll around the resort grounds, do some hiking, take a swim, or relax on our bungalows’ individual verandas, before departing for Bonampak. Lunch today will be in a rustic jungle restaurant. The discovery of the painted murals at Bonampak in the 1950s changed the way the world saw the Maya. Although the murals are faded and difficult to view, they remain a sight to see. The site is run by Lacandon Maya, and we may get a chance to interact with them during our visit. Continue on to Frontera Corozal, a Chol Maya community on the banks of the Usumacinta River, the famous “river of ruins.” Along its banks, classic Maya civilization built some of its grandest cities. We are now traveling deep into the heart of Maya country, and we will stay at a remote, rustic jungle lodge. Overnight at Escudo Jaguar Lodge for two nights. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, February 19: Yaxchilán After breakfast, travel by small boat down the Usumacinta River to the great classic Maya site of Yaxchilán, whose high-crested temples and palaces climb the steep hills above a large plaza upon a terrace by the river. We will spend all day at this fantastic site, enjoying a picnic lunch under the forest canopy. Beautiful monolithic stelae (standing stone monuments) and lintels spanning the temple doorways display intricate reliefs. Howler and spider monkeys and many tropical birds may accompany us as we explore the steep jungle trails, climbing to the higher elevations overlooking the ancient Maya landscape. We return by boat to our lodge late this afternoon. (B,L,D)

Thursday, February 20: Tikal, Guatemala Journey upriver and cross over into the heart of Guatemala, to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tikal. As with most Maya sites, Classic Period constructions cover those from earlier times, and ancient structures are scattered for miles in every direction from its center. Overnight at the 4-star Hotel Tikal Inn for three nights . (B,L,D)

Friday, February 21: Tikal Spend a full day at Tikal, which contains thousands of ancient structures, the majority of which remain unexcavated. This vast site has spectacular pyramids, numerous plazas, a sprawling main palace and several lesser royal residences, multiple ball courts, causeways, dozens of stelae, and much more. It is estimated that more than 50,000 people lived at Tikal in its heyday, and the story of the city and its rise and fall mirrors the larger story of Maya civilization itself. Following the glories of the Classic Period, the site was largely abandoned by A.D. 900. (B,L,D)

Saturday, February 22: Optional pre-dawn hike | Tikal site museums | PM at leisure OR Optional excursion to Yaxhá Today is a day to relax and re-charge after eight busy days. However, for the energetic (and weather permitting), there will be an optional, pre-dawn hike up the steep steps of Tikal’s Temple IV—the site’s tallest pyramid at 230 feet, and the largest Maya shrine built in the 8th century. Being a dense rainforest there could be fog but, if not, we may enjoy breathtaking sunrise views from the top. After breakfast, we will visit two small Tikal site museums and then enjoy the rest of day at leisure, until we gather for dinner. Instead of this time at leisure, you have the option to join our leaders on a 1.5-hour drive to Yaxhá, a large and important ancient Maya site that is infrequently visited. Located in dense jungle on a ridge overlooking turquoise Lake Yaxhá, the vast site includes numerous altars and stelae, nine temple pyramids, and two ball courts. Boxed lunches will be enjoyed at the site. (B,L,D)

Depart Tikal for Rio Dulce, stopping along the way to visit the Southeastern Petén Regional Museum, in the town of Dolores, with a significant collection of Classic Maya artifacts. Arrive in Rio Dulce where we enjoy a late lunch and get an overview of the area, including viewing a 17 th -century Spanish fortress, the Castle of San Felipe de Lara, located where the river meets Lake Izabal. Late this afternoon, we check-in to our waterside hotel. Overnight at the 3-star Hotel Catamaran . (B,L,D)

Monday, February 24: Quiriguá | Motagua Valley | Paleontology and Archaeology Museum, Estanzuela | Copán, Honduras After a short boat ride, continue to Quiriguá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the tallest Maya stelae—one weighs 65 tons and is 35 feet above ground and eight feet underground. Sculpture here is like no other place, with spectacular cosmograms in the likeness of divine crocodiles and jaguars carved in the round from huge boulders. Here we also find a rare description of mythical events which took place at the origin of the calendar Great Cycle that ended in 2012. After leaving Quiriguá, we have lunch in the Motagua Valley, the primary jade source for all of Mesoamerica; and stop in Estanzuela to visit the small Roberto Wookfolk Saravia Paleontology and Archaeology Museum. Continue on, crossing the border into Honduras, and check-in to our hotel. Overnight at the 4-star Hotel Marina Copán for two nights . (B,L,D)

Tuesday, February 25: Copán A short drive brings us to the archaeological site of Copán, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as Hux Wintik (translation uncertain). If Palenque was the “Paris of the Maya,” then Copán was the “Athens of the Maya.” The magnificent acropolis, plazas, courtyards, and standing sculptures are the hallmarks of this southernmost Maya capital. Enjoy a splendid picnic lunch at the site and then visit the excellent site museum, which has a full-scale replica of the funeral shrine of the founder of the Copán dynasty and many fabulous pieces of Maya sculpture. Dinner is on your own this evening in Copán; restaurant suggestions will be available from your tour manager. (B,L)

Wednesday, February 26: Sepulturas Group | San Pedro Sula | Farewell dinner Tour the Sepulturas Group, located a few miles from the site of Copán, which also housed a residential area for non-Maya (perhaps foreign merchants) around A.D. 800. We have now traveled from the western capital of Palenque, through the heartland at Tikal, and on to the southern capital of Copán, giving us a sense of the enormity of ancient Maya civilization in its heyday. After lunch at a local restaurant, drive to San Pedro Sula, where we check-in to our hotel, get settled, and then gather for a farewell dinner. Overnight at the 5-star Hilton Princess San Pedro Sula . (B,L,D)

Thursday, February 27: Fly home Transfer to the airport in San Pedro Sula (SAP), Honduras, for flights home. (B)

10 Most Fascinating Mayan Ruins in Guatemala

By Carl Austin · Last updated on February 5, 2024

The Central American country of Guatemala is filled with traditional native villages and colorful markets. If you can tear yourself away from its present charm, you’ll find a past that is even more awesome: remains of the Mayan cities that once dominated the country. The Mayans were one of the greatest early civilizations, and their technology will astound you even today. But don’t stop your learning adventure at must-see Tikal. Other Mayan ruins in Guatemala are just as impressive and, because they’re not as well known, not overrun by travelers. Some, such as Yaxha and Topoxte, are close enough together they can be visited on the same trip.

10. El Ceibal [SEE MAP]

El Ceibal

Surrounded by rainforest in the Peten region, El Ceibal is noted for the outstanding artworks and hieroglyphics the Mayans carved into stelae made from hard limestone. Many of the stelae were carved after 800 at a time when the rest of the Mayan world was collapsing. The art is detailed and considered beautiful, giving El Ceibal the nickname of “Mayan Art Gallery.” Besides the stelae, carvings can be found on stairways and altars. Located on the Pasion River, El Ceibal had about 10,000 residents living in hundreds of houses. Buildings, including monuments, residences and pyramids, are divided into three groups.

9. Topoxte [SEE MAP]

Topoxte

Topoxte stands out from the other pre-Columbian Mayan ruins in Guatemala: It’s located on five islands in Yaxha Lake. An important example of Mayans occupying islands, Topoxte was at its peak a couple of centuries before 1450, when it was abandoned. Prior to that, it had been the capital of the Kowoj Mayans and played a role in trade between the Yucatan Peninsula and the Mayan highlands. Exploration is still going on at the site. Among the finds is a temple-pyramid that is the only Preclassic (2000 BC to 240 AD) left in Peten. The temple has three levels with an entrance supported by pillars.

8. Zaculeu [SEE MAP]

Zaculeu

The ruins at Zaculeu, a capital of the Mam Mayans, are astoundingly impressive, even though a 1940s restoration effort obscured much of their magnificence. Zaculeu was both a religious center and a fortress. It was somewhat successful as a fortress until the Spanish came in 1525 and starved the Mam into surrender. The Mam built their pyramids, temples, palaces and other buildings around plazas. The buildings reflect the Mam and K’iche’, an earlier conqueror, archtectural styles. Most of the buildings were constructed between the third and seventh centuries. Located close to Huehuetenango, Zaculeu is still used as a ceremonial site today.

7. Nakum [SEE MAP]

Nakum

Nakum is a good place to see archaeologists at work, since excavations are taking place on what is the Mayans ‘largest research project. Most of the excavation is taking place in the south group – the north group of buildings remains relatively unexplored y comparison. In recent years, jade artifacts have been found at Nakum, located in the Peten region. Discoveries so far also include a palace with 44 rooms, an elevated acropolis with great views of other important buildings, stelae and a central plaza. Nakum, on a major trade route, was at its peak from the eighth to 10th centuries.

6. Uaxactun [SEE MAP]

Uaxactun

If your journey into Mayan ruins stops at Tikal, you’ll be missing out on something special: Uaxactun. Just 20 km (12 miles) away via a dirt road lies the oldest astronomical observatory in Mayan civilization. It was a place where ceremonies were held; one temple held stucco masks. Sometimes known as Waxaktun, the ruins of Uaxactun may date as far back as 1000 BC. The last inscribed monument in Uaxactun was dated in 889. Uaxactun is located in Tikal National Park but doesn’t get anywhere near the tourists the Tikal ruins do because few people know about it. Now you do.

5. Quirigua [SEE MAP]

Quirigua

Quirigua can be found in southeastern Guatemala along the Motagua River and on several important trade routes of the time. Inhabited since about 200 AD, most of Quirigua’s monuments were constructed in the eighth and ninth centuries. The centerpiece of Quirigua Archaeological Park is the Great Plaza, the largest known Mayan public space. Quirigua is well known for its sandstone monuments that were carved without metal tools. These stelae are important because of the information carved into them: hieroglyphic texts with information such as important dates, events such as eclipses and historical data as well as Mayan politics.

4. El Mirador [SEE MAP]

El Mirador

El Mirador is frequently referred to as the “lost city of the Maya” because this former Mayan capital is now overrun by jungle. At one time it was the largest city (estimates are from 100,000 to 250,000 people) in Mayan civilization. Because of the difficulty in getting there, it’s been little explored, though one of the largest pyramids in the world was found here. Getting to El Mirador is described as an adventure, since it involves an overland journey of two to three days through dense jungles to reach the city that was founded about 2000 BC.

3. Iximche [SEE MAP]

Iximche

The ruins of Iximche are impressive. They include palaces, pyramids, temples where human sacrifices were made, and a couple of ball courts. Some Mayan ceremonies and rituals are still performed here today, so perhaps you’ll get lucky on your visit to this western highlands site. Ancient murals have been found in the ruins. The capital of one Mayan group, Iximche became the first capital of Guatemala when the Spanish conquerors arrived. The Kaqchikels and the Spanish later had a falling out, so the Mayans left the city, which burned two years later. You can still see signs of the fire when you visit today.

2. Yaxha [SEE MAP]

Yaxha

The early Mayans built Yaxha on a ridge overlooking a lake by the same name – Yaxha translates as blue-green water in the Mayan language. It’s located in Peten region close to the border with Belize. The third largest Mayan city in Guatemala, around 500 buildings, including nine temple-pyramids, have been discovered here. You’ll also find five acropolises, stelae and three ball courts. Surrounded by subtropical forests that are part of a nature reserve, Yaxha is indeed a picturesque place. If you were a fan of Survivor Guatemala, you may recognize Yaxha since the series was filmed here.

1. Tikal [SEE MAP]

Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala

Located in the tropical rainforest of the Petén province, Tikal is the most famous of Guatemala’s Mayan ruins, and therefore the most visited. The site is awesome, with stunning temples and palaces as well as ceremonial platforms and remains of houses. Climbing to the top of one of these temples offers a great experience with beautiful panoramic views from above the tree tops. Tikal was one of the most important Mayan cities since it was the economic, political and military center of this pre-Columbian civilization. Monuments decorated with carvings and painted murals can be found in the core site; hieroglyphics tell the history of Tikal. Tikal, one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms, is a prime example of the sophisticated artistic, intellectual and technological talents of the Mayans.

I’m currently trying to plan a trip for 2020 to Guatemala and was doing some research on different ruins to visit. Everyone knows Tikal but it looks like some of the smaller ruins are less impacted in terms of visitors and carry a lot of history as well. El Ceibal is one the newer ruins that as been discovered I believe.

Great tour company for Guatemala!

We used Mayan World to organise multiple trips / tours including driving us from Belize to Guatemala, and a tour of Tikal. Manuel was fantastic throughout- really good communication and excellent service. All of the pickups were on time and exactly as planned, and the price was reasonable compared with other options we looked at. I really can't rate Manuel highly enough- at one point coming back to our hotel after the Tikal tour there were road works preventing us from getting to our hotel. So Manuel talked to some locals who owned a boat, who took us the rest of the way on the lake! Great service and I would highly recommend!

They organized for us 2 great days of visits to discover the Mayan archeological sites of Yaxha and Tikal. They picked us up at our hotel in Flores and drove us to the sites. They took care of everything: entrance fee, tickets, lunch, order of the visits. We had a great guide Jerson who spoke Spanish French and English perfectly! He had great knowledge of the history of both sites. He was very friendly, informative and he adjusted his guided tours to our rhythm walk and our interest. We have seen so much during these 2 tours. We took great photos!! And we created unforgettable memories that will last for a lifetime! Thank you MAYA WORLD DAY TOURS, thank you Jerson and thank you Hector! Yaxha & Tikal are gems of the Maya culture, you need to visit if you are in Flores!

Exploring Maya Masterpieces: Two Museums of Guatemala City

Here is our amazing group in front of one of the preserved mounds at Miraflores. Despite centuries of erasure, this ruin of ‘Kaminaljuyu’ has endured countless opportunities to be destroyed. The location of the museum was powerful alone, as it elucidated Maya resilience through the preservation of both architecture and artifacts.

F35D690C-C9BA-4C35-B786-F7F913388688

Today, our group once again drove to Guatemala City, to engage with the incredible collections of pre-Hispanic Maya art at the Miraflores Museum and the the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MUNAE). Beginning with the Miraflores Museum, we delved further into our exploration of the Maya, deepening our understanding of their complex material culture. The museum was carefully planned and organized, with meticulous attention to detail in each exhibit. Each exhibit had its own means of interaction and immersion, like drawing one’s Nahual on a board of sand, or matching the location of various resources with their provenance on a map. It was starkly different from other museums we had been to as a group thus far, as it is privately funded and maintained, unlike the MUNAE or the site museum at Iximche. The collection was incredible, with amazing examples of artifacts ranging from finely carved eccentrics, detailed ceramic vessels, to sculpted jade of some of the best quality workmanship. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey through Xibalba, stepping through each trial the Hero Twins faced as they traversed through the underworld. I really appreciated being allowed inside of the lab, as it allowed my peers and I to make more personal connections with the artifacts in front of us, compared to being enclosed in glass or roped off for security.

Here are my friends, engaging with one of the museum’s numerous chances to connect with the art that we were seeing.

IMG_0923

Following the   Miraflores Museum, we visited the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MUNAE). This museum has one of the singular best collections of Maya art in the world, although the recently reopened museum’s orientation and layout left much to be desired. I was especially fond of the sketches and outlines of certain sections of monuments and artworks, that allowed the untrained eye to more easily decipher what one was looking at. Dr. Runggaldier led a fantastic tour of the museum, providing extensive information about the various artifacts. As someone focused on beginning a career in Maya archaeology and art history, I feel like this was an invaluable experience. I feel so much more knowledgeable about the meaning and purpose of what the Maya were conveying through their incredibly detailed artworks. This museum holds some true masterpieces, collected from all corners of the country. In contrast to the Miraflores Museum, MUNAE exhibited a tremendous amount of monumental architecture like massive stelae and altars. Some of these works included humongous stela that portrayed significant historical events, like the defeat of Calakmul by Jasaw Chan K’awiil I, the lord of Tikal in 695. I appreciated the carefully positioned lighting that appropriately showed each piece’s depth and range.

Adrian and I were really impressed by the size of this ceramic pot, it was monumental in its own right!

Howdy! My name is Gabriel, and I am a rising senior at UT Austin. I am majoring in anthropology with a history minor, and I am specifically interested in Mesoamerican societies and ways of thinking. My project is focused on cacao’s role and importance within the Maya cosmos. I am an avid traveler and love exploring new places, and I have been fortunate enough to have travelled to Guatemala and Belize. However, this level of immersion is a completely new experience for me. In just a few days I have learned an incredible amount and look at these interactions with what feels like new eyes. This program holds something special for everyone, and I feel that these experiences will impact our perspectives for the rest of our lives. I look forward to everyday we have here, as we enjoy the beauty of the land and culture. View all posts by Gabriel Jones
