For When There Are No Roads But You Still Want To Have Fun

Article quick nav.

These are the best enduro dirt and dual sport bikes for 2023:

Honda CRF450L

Yamaha WR250F

Beta 500 RR-S

KTM 350 EXC-F

Each year as winter comes upon us, and I start going through the normal routine of putting my bikes away for the season, I tend to start looking ahead to the upcoming model year. Thanks to the good old pandemic it is hard to know when the next chance to attend a Motorcycle Show might be. Knowing this, and knowing we will start seeing many buyers' guides listing every single detail of everything being produced for 2023, I wanted to give you my list of the bikes that have my attention in the Enduro world.

I am not looking to hit the motocross tracks, but I live in Western Canada, with endless trails in the mountains and foothills, and I love exploring them all. A powerful, fast enduro, that I can feel confident with on all kinds of terrain is the key.

With that knowledge, you will see how this list reflects such.

About Our Selections

These selections considered ease of use, rideability, price, and how effective each motorcycle was achieving the stated goal of its class. We are confident that any of these bikes will be superb options for most riders.

To further define what we are meaning by "Enduro" we have set our sights at bikes that either fit the competition enduro criteria, or are dirt bikes that are not meant for motocross.

2023 Honda CRF450RL

One of the best all-around enduro bikes that also works as a dual-sport

enduro travel motorcycle

Why We Picked It:

The Honda CRF450RL is packed with off-road goodness. The “R” reminds us that the 2023 model uses the CRF450R motocross platform, then tunes it for trail greatness.

Engine modifications include; a specific crankshaft for this bike that adds inertia and enhances low RPM torque, and three piston rings to increase durability. A new ECU further refines the fuel injection tuning bringing the 449cc Unicam engine to 41.7 hp, and 23.6 lb/ft of torque.

The frame was widened slightly to accommodate a 6-speed transmission, providing a wider gear spacing to benefit both, low-speed abilities, and a tall 6th gear for long high speed stretches.

The Showa 49 mm front fork has 12 inches of travel and the Prolink rear suspension 11.8 inches of travel. New lightweight handguards are standard. The titanium fuel tank is 20% larger than the R at 2.0 gallons (7.6L).

In street-legal ready to ride trim the bike comes in at 291 lbs.

Specifications:

Price: $9,999

Engine: 449cc four-stroke single

Power: 41 . 7 HP

Torque: 23.6 lbs-ft

Transmission: 6 Speed Manual

Curb Weight: 291 lbs

A dual-sport that is based on a motocross platform, it is ready to go off-road at any moment

2023 Yamaha WR250F

A durable trail bike that has been in top 10 lists for over a decade now

enduro travel motorcycle

This is the machine for those who are all about, light is right. Yamaha has been making constant progressive improvements to the WR250F, and it is almost more race bike than enduro. This makes sense with so much of this bike being straight up a YZ250F race bike with a headlight added.

I am being a bit facetious about that, but much of this bike comes right from the motocross sibling. The cylinder head gets some rework, and ups the power from bottom to top. Not by much, but early riders have commented that it is noticeable. The frame, clutch, and brakes all get tweaked, which adds up to the 2023 model being the best version of the WR250F yet.

The harder you push this bike the more it rewards that aggression. Seat height is 37.6 inches, something to note for shorter riders, although due to this bike not being street legal it may be less of a factor. At just 254 lbs wet, and with an excellent KYB suspension, tossing this bike into corners, will certainly make you grin like a maniac.

Price: $8,899

Engine: 250cc four-stroke single

Power: 35 HP

Torque: 18 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 254 lbs

One of the best trail bikes for nearly two decades now

Built to withstand multiple days of absolutely no-roads-no-problems riding

2023 Beta 500 RR-S

If there was ever a time to call something a super-enduro, this bike is it

enduro travel motorcycle

Once again Beta makes small improvements to the RR-S lineup of street-legal off-road bikes. Beta makes this bike with 4 engine choices but it is the 500 that is the sales leader.

With lots of low-end grunt and a very light 243lb wet weight, the Beta 500 RR-S, can certainly stretch your arms. To get the power down,  the rear shock has new compression damping settings with independent high and low-speed damping rates providing the rider with the adjustability for both separate settings. The front fork also gets a small valving change, and the clutch diaphragm is new providing lighter pull and more progressive control.

Beta improved the front LED headlight plus the overall graphics and color scheme, so you should be more visible than ever on the road and trail.

Price: $11,799

Engine: 478cc four-stroke single

Power: 47 HP

Torque: 32.6 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 243 lbs

One of the oldest motorcycle companies still running. Has an established enduro history that is nothing to scoff at with input and developmental help from KTM

Very lightweight for the power it puts down with grunt all over the low to mid rev range

2023 KTM 350 EXC-F

Another instant classic from the Austrian off-road wizards

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM 350 four-stroke has been the most popular in their enduro lineup. Known for fantastic 450 like power, and 250 like handling, I am choosing it for this list over the 500 EXC-F. I honestly feel like it is the one I would be choosing out of the KTM lineup .

The 2022 model doesn’t change much from last year. The main improvement looks to come with the WP suspension. The WP Xplor 48mm fork’s tubes get a new oil bypass and damping changes. The XPLOR forks come with reduced friction thanks to updated outer tubes, a polished spring for less pollution of the oil, and a reworked upper cartridge screw connection to enhance rebound damping. The PDS shock now boasts a new O-ring that is less prone to deformation, wear, and fading, while new settings offer better bottoming out resistance.

The KTM 350 EXC-F's fuel-injected DOHC engine offers the best power-to-weight ratio on the market (KTM claim). It delivers a broad torque curve that just delivers. If you want brute power, choose the 500 EXC-F as it offers superb balance throughout the rev range and upwards of 34 hp.

Wet weight (without fuel) is 238 lbs. The fuel capacity is 2.25 gal (8.5 L)

All EXC-F models have KTMs lightweight Chromoly steel frame, Brembo clutch and brakes, lightweight Lithium battery, and signature orange graphics, with added blue for 2023.

Price: $12,499

Engine: 349.7cc four-stroke single

Power: ~35 HP

Torque: ~22.5 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: ~250 lbs

A brand new version is releasing in very late 2023/early 2024, with all new frame for extra rigidity

A premium enduro, for sure, but KTM is legendary for their off-road bikes

2023 Zero FX

Yes, you can go off-road with nothing but electricity.

enduro travel motorcycle

Are you ready to consider an electric bike yet? There is little doubt that electric vehicles of all types are where the world is headed, and Zero is right out front with their motorcycles.

The FX is more to the dual sport side of the dirt world, but it is certainly capable of being a competent Enduro machine. The 2023 Zero FX comes in two specs, 3.6 kWh and 7.2 kWh. I would be choosing the 7.2 battery which has a range of 91 miles and a curb weight of 289 lbs.

There is plenty about making the switch to a Zero that will be new, but experienced riders will adapt quickly. First off, there is no clutch. You have one gear and just a constant progression of power as you twist the throttle. Second, there is huge torque. With 78 ft-lb peak torque available instantly, this bike can easily pull you out of all kinds of situations. Lastly, it is so quiet. You will hear just the belt turning and the wheels over the ground. At first, it is bizarre, but then it quickly becomes amazing.

Drawbacks? I would not expect to toss it around as hard as a KTM, the Showa suspension is good, just not at the same level as others on this list. The Zero FX is capable, but it does lean more to the dual sport side and not the motocross level of expectation. That said, you have a bike that you will tend to ride in town more often than you would any other enduro on this list. The biggest drawback for some will be charging. Get the optional fast charger ($600) and that can bring the time down to 3 hours for a full charge.

Price: $11,995

Engine: Z-Force 75-5 Air Cooled Brushless Motor

Power: 46 HP equivalent

Torque: 78 lbs-ft

Transmission: Clutchless Direct Drive

Curb Weight: 289 lbs

Due to being electric, has immense torque at every rev

With the 7.2 kWh battery, suitable for all day trail riding

No matter how you like to explore, there is an ideal bike for you.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Looking to buy a motorcycle for on- and off-road riding, or long-distance travel? Fortunately, there are many choices. Our list showcases 18 of the best adventure motorcycles on the U.S. market for 2023.

adventure motorcycles

The adventure or “ADV” segment of the motorcycle industry is thriving, and the selection just keeps growing. Regardless of your preferences, skill level, or budget, you will likely find something to scratch your itch for adventure riding within the ever-expanding ADV bike lineup.

To be considered an “adventure” motorcycle we’re talking street legal, off-road capable, and comfortable to ride for long distances.

Adventure bikes inherently strive to offer equally good performance, handling, and comfort both on- and off-road. This is a complicated balance to strike, and there tend to be concessions one way or another. Choosing the best adventure motorcycle really means figuring out what qualities are most important to you.

This is not an exhaustive list of all bikes that meet those general criteria or could be made to meet them with after-market upgrades. Instead, we chose these tried-and-true adventure motorcycles that come from the factory ready for long-distance riding.

18 Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023

adventure motorcycles

Here’s our list of the Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023, in order of displacement — from smallest to largest.

  • Base price $9,104-10,799
  • Engine 645cc V-twin
  • Power 70 hp
  • Wet weight 476 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.3 gal.
  • Tire size 19”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The V-Strom line offers new or budget-conscience adventure riders an affordable way to explore the world on a legendary V-twin. Well known for being reliable, versatile, and inexpensive, the 650 platform is a great way to join the fast-growing sport of adventure motorcycle riding.

Differences in the models are small but important. The standard V-Strom 650 (shown) comes with 10-spoke cast wheels with tubeless tires, while the XT model has spoke-style wheels with tubeless tires, hand guards, and a protective lower engine cowl.

The 650XT Adventure comes with everything the XT does in addition to a rugged accessory bar and 37L quick-release aluminum panniers. Depending on your riding style, goals, and budget, the 650 may be all the bike you’ll need.

If you can afford a bit more, budget adventure riders can now get a more purpose-built bike for their money with the new 800DE model.

  • Base price $12,299-12,699
  • Engine 659cc parallel twin
  • Power 79 hp
  • Wet weight 450 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.7 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Aprilia, having just joined the adventure motorcycle scene last year, no changes have been announced for the Tuareg 660 for 2023. Aprilia has done a good job offering a compelling new ADV bike at a reasonable price.

At only 450 pounds wet, the Tuareg is nicely placed at the smaller end of the mid-weight options. The suspension has a whopping 9.4 inches of travel in both the front and rear, giving it one of the highest ranges of suspension travel in its class.

Fuel is carried low, having a big impact on how the bike handles and making it relatively easy to pick up for a bike this size. There are tons of unique, well-thought-out features to discover if you take the time to research this bike thoroughly.

For the many folks struggling to find a Ténéré 700 or who are thinking about paying over MSRP to get one, the Tuareg deserves consideration.

  • Base price $10,499
  • Engine 689cc parallel twin
  • Power 74 hp
  • Wet weight 452 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.2 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Ténéré 700, or “T7,” has enjoyed a huge following since conception. Unfortunately, Yamaha has not been able to keep up with demand. If you can manage to find one, it is indeed a special bike worthy of the accolades it has received.

Yamaha has succeeded in offering the ADV community something that no other manufacturer has to date: a rock-solid engine in a capable ADV bike at an incredibly low price. How did they do that? Well, compared to the competition, the  Ténéré 700  has almost zero extras.

For some, this is a compromise; for others, a preference. If you need ride modes, traction control, and cruise control to enjoy your ride, this is not your bike.

If you like the simplicity of a basic setup that will help you become a better rider by the sheer absence of rider aids, start looking now. It might take you a while to find one, and you will likely have to pay above MSRP to get it. If you want more bang for your buck, look at the Tuareg 660 .

  • Base price $9,995
  • Engine 853cc parallel twin
  • Power 77 hp
  • Wet weight 493 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The F 750 is better suited for pavement than the F 850, coming with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast aluminum wheels. All GS models come equipped with innovative features and state-of-the-art technology, proving a plush ride regardless of which size you choose.

Additionally, BMW has a whole host of optional upgrades to make sure your bike meets all of your needs. If you go with the F 750 GS over the bigger, more off-road capable 850 models, you will potentially save a fair amount of money and a little bit of weight but also get a little less power, have a shorter range, and have less wind protection.

If you are looking at BMW because you want a GS and you’d like to be able to take your bike down any road you come across, check out the F 850 GS for better ground clearance, bigger, spoked wheels, and better suspension.

  • Base price $11,349-12,999
  • Engine 776cc parallel twin
  • Power 84.3 hp
  • Wet weight 507 lbs.
  • Tire size 21”/17"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Brand new for 2023, Suzuki has stepped up to the plate offering adventure riders a more dirt-oriented bike with the addition of the 800DE model (shown) to the V-Strom lineup.

The 800DE fits nicely into the V-Strom family between the popular 650 and 1050 options. This is particularly exciting due to the fact that the   larger, mid-weight lineup of ADV bikes is notably lacking affordable options, and the V-Stroms are known for providing great value for the money.

The Adventure model on the 800 platform comes equipped with quick-release black-anodized 37L aluminum panniers, plus a rugged accessory bar and aluminum skid plate for true off-road touring capability.

While the base weight is unfortunately on the heavy side at 507 pounds (we don’t know what the Adventure model add-ons weigh), Suzuki’s reputation for reliability coupled with a fair price point will suit many.

  • Base price $12,595-13,595
  • Power 90 hp
  • Wet weight 504 lbs., 538 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal., 6.1 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The standard F 850 GS (shown) is a trimmed-down version of the F 850 GS Adventure with a smaller fuel tank, fairing, and shorter suspension . The Adventure model, or “GSA” as it is often referred to, comes with quite a bit more and, as a result, weighs significantly more.

At 538 pounds, the GSA is a heavy adventure motorcycle for the mid-weight category but also the most long-distance-touring-friendly for this displacement. With its large gas tank, windshield, and bulky fairing, the F 850 GSA offers good range, weather protection, and comfort.

Don’t be misled by the base prices, as you will quickly realize many of the BMW features you want are optional, and they add up fast. Depending on what kind of adventure riding you want to do, if you are a BMW fan, you might find that for the weight and the price of the 850, you can get more bike for your money with the GS 1250 .

A good reason to stick with a BMW? They have a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty — one of the best in the business.

  • Base price $12,190-13,190
  • Engine 853cc V-twin
  • Power 76 hp
  • Fuel capacity 6 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Moto Guzzi V85TT has a transverse V-twin engine and is shaft driven — a unique combination. The standard model V85TT (shown) comes with quite a few comfort, performance, and tech features that you might not expect on an old-fashioned-looking bike.

The Adventure model has even more. If you crave classic, retro styling and a ton of character, and you’re more interested in road travel than aggressive off-road capability, take a peek at the details of this Moto Guzzi. You’ll be surprised by what you get for your adventure motorcycle money. Spoiler alert: there’s gorgeous luggage involved.

  • Base price $13,949-15,199
  • Engine 889cc parallel twin
  • Power 105 hp, 103 hp
  • Wet weight 473 lbs., 464 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Updated for 2023, the KTM 890 Adventure base model (shown) has received some nice upgrades that make it even more appealing at this price point. You might quickly find yourself spending more, though, as KTM has cleverly introduced a new demo mode, allowing you to test out all the optional electronic rider aids for the first 932 miles.

Upon startup, after you’ve passed that mark, the aids will vanish, and you may decide you need to purchase just one or two upgrades, or perhaps you’ll feel compelled to spring for the full tech pack. Regardless of your decision there, the reworked adjustable suspension, improved seat comfort, electronics, and better wind protection will serve you well.

The key difference between the Adventure R model and every other bike in the midweight ADV category is the suspension. Lightweight, responsive, and powerful, this bike is just as capable, comfortable, and fun on the twisties as it is on single track.

More dirt-oriented than the base model, this bike is for you if you want the highest-performing, easiest-to-pick-up adventure motorcycle money can buy.

  • Base price $14,995-17,395
  • Engine 888cc triple
  • Power 94 hp
  • Wet weight 501 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.28 gal.
  • Tire size 19"/17", 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Released in 2020 to replace the well-loved Tiger 800, Triumph has done an amazing job producing a high-quality, capable, and comfortable range of bikes to meet all your adventure motorcycle needs.

If you prefer more road riding, the 900 GT (shown) and 900 GT Pro will take care of you on everything from urban adventures to proper long-distance travel. It comes with a 19-inch front and 17-inch cast wheel.

The GT Low model saves nearly 2 inches in seat height by slightly reducing the suspension travel. As this is the more street-oriented model, the tiny loss in ground clearance shouldn’t pose an issue.

If you want an adventure bike built for maximum off-road, all-day riding capability, control, and comfort, the Tiger 900 Rally and Rally Pro have you covered. The latter comes with a tubeless, spoked 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel.

Triumph also offers a 3-year, unlimited-mile warranty. Imagine how many miles you could lay down on one of these in three years!

  • Base price $14,499
  • Power 105 hp
  • Wet weight 472 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

First released in 2022, the Norden 901 is based on the well-loved KTM 890 Adventure platform. The key difference is the Norden is set up to be more comfortable on the road for traveling long distances than the 890, with a wider, plusher seat and softer suspension.

This bike stands out from the competition because of its relatively low MSRP and power-to-weight ratio — an impressive 105 horsepower and 472 pounds. Despite looking chunky, the fuel and engine weight are down low, making it feel surprisingly light and responsive.

Don’t let KTM’s reputation for being high maintenance scare you off; the oil change interval on this bike is a whopping 9,300 miles.

A welcome addition to the popular mid-weight adventure bike category, the Norden 901 handles very well on- or off-road and is comfortable, powerful, and fun to ride.

  • Base price $17,695-18,295
  • Engine 937cc V-twin
  • Power 110 hp
  • Wet weight 495 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Introduced in 2022, the DesertX is an exciting addition to the mid-weight ADV motorcycle lineup. This is the first modern Ducati with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tire, long-stroke suspension, and a frame designed specifically for off-road adventuring.

Ducati did their homework, successfully offering an impressive package that stands out from the crowd. Head-turning styling and overall build quality; amazing suspension, brakes, and electronics package; and, of course, the most powerful engine in its class.

This is Ducati we’re talking about, after all. If you don’t want to make any concessions in performance or comfort going between on- and off-road riding, the DesertX is one of the most capable and highest-quality adventure motorcycles currently available.

  • Base price $15,199-17,599
  • Engine 1,137cc V-twin
  • Power 107 hp
  • Wet weight 554 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Suzuki has been inspired by the competition, introducing a whole host of revisions to the 1050 V-Strom and making it a better performing, more comfortable, and more versatile platform.

The new   DE model replaces the XT model from prior years, with the intention of offering a more off-road capable model to the lineup. How does the DE differ from the base model? The standard 1050 (shown) comes with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless 10-spoke cast wheels.

The DE has a spoked 21-inch tubed front wheel and 17-inch tubeless rear, offering better ground clearance and taller suspension for off-road performance, among other features.

The Adventure model is equipped with all the updates of the DE, with the addition of travel accessories such as aluminum panniers and LED fog lights.

  • Base price TBA
  • Engine 1,084cc parallel twin
  • Power 101 hp
  • Wet weight 505 lbs., 529 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal., 6.5 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

As of writing, the official 2023 models, options, and corresponding pricing for the Africa Twin lineup have yet to be confirmed for the US market. But no best adventure bikes list is complete without the Africa Twin.

Shown is the 2022 Adventure Sports ES model. With a lot of new adventure bikes popping up in the mid-weight category, Honda’s popular CRF1100L platform has some stiff competition.

It may not be the lightest, fastest, or highest-performing adventure motorcycle on the market, but Honda has given us a solid, good-performing, ultra-reliable, quality-made ADV bike that has been popular around the world for decades.

Most importantly, it handles the road just as well as the dirt and offers great value for the money. How do you argue with all that?

  • Base price $29,995-30,595
  • Engine 1,158cc V4
  • Power 170 hp
  • Wet weight 573 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Making its world debut in 2023, the V4 Rally is an updated Multistrada on steroids. It has way too many bells and whistles to list (we have a whole article on that  here ), but you can trust that all your power, comfort, safety, and connectivity needs will be exceeded.

Solo or two-up, this bike will confidently adjust to accommodate any conditions you might throw at it. Leading the pack in radar technology, the V4 is the first motorcycle in production to have both front and rear radar for adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings.

Boasting more horsepower than any other ADV bike on the market, fuel consumption is something to investigate, especially if you are looking for the longest range possible.

The main reason this may not be the bike for you? Sit down before you read the price range.

  • Base price $16,299
  • Engine 1,199cc parallel twin
  • Wet weight 584 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 6.1 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Super Ténéré is Yamaha’s biggest adventure motorcycle and has been around for years. It has a large following and is known for being trustworthy and capable.

Unlike its little brother, the Ténéré 700 , which notoriously carries its weight high, the engine mass is kept low on the 1200 for great handling. It does come with more features than the 700, but fewer than its competitors in the heavyweight category.

Fewer electronics mean less to fail, making it a reliable and durable choice for long-distance travel. The Super Ténéré does have basic frills, like cruise and traction control, and adjustable suspension.

This bike has been and will continue to be a solid choice for adventure riding.

  • Base price $19,595-24,200
  • Engine 1,160cc triple
  • Power 147 hp
  • Wet weight 529 lbs., 575 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.3 gal., 7.9 gal.
  • Tire size 19”/18”, 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Triumph’s 1200 lineup got a complete makeover for 2022. A new engine, chassis, suspension, brakes — the whole works. The biggest complaint about the old 1200s was the weight. That has gone down, so good job Triumph for listening.

More road-focused with a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, the GT series includes the base model GT (shown), GT Pro, and GT Explorer. The Rally Pro and Rally Explorer models are more dirt-oriented, with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheel, more ground clearance, and longer travel suspension.

The Rally models are the same bikes, except the Explorer comes with a larger tank size (5.3 gallons versus 7.9 gallons), blind-spot detection, fuel tank protection bars, standard heated seats, and taller handlebar risers.

Fast, agile, and comfortable, there is a Tiger for everyone in this broad lineup.

  • Base price $17,995-20,345
  • Engine 1,254cc flat twin
  • Power 136 hp
  • Wet weight 549 lbs., 591 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.2 gal., 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The big BMW GS bikes are what come to mind for many when we think of adventure motorcycles. The GS Adventure — or “GSA” — is a beefed-up version of the base GS (shown), having bigger fuel capacity, more wind protection, spoked wheels, and higher clearance for off-road riding.

These behemoths may be heavy, but they are easier to pick up than you may expect, thanks to the big cylinder heads and crash bars that hold them partly upright.

If you are tempted to save money or weight by going with the base model, you might want to take a look at all the add-ons you’d likely want, calculate how the weight would be impacted, and compare it to what comes included in the price of the GSA.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Seeing extensive revisions in 2021, the KTM 1290 platform has only minor updates for 2023.

The Adventure S model (shown) is the more long-distance, road-oriented sibling of the aggressively off-road capable Adventure R model. The 1290 models cover ground quickly and effortlessly and have the ergonomics to make sure your adventures are as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

KTMs are highly customizable and known for being incredibly lightweight, fun, and powerful. Because of that, they’re one of the best adventure motorcycles on- and off-road.

2023 Adventure Motorcycles — No Perfect Bike

adventure motorcycles

Full disclosure, I ride a Suzuki DR650SE, and I call it my adventure motorcycle. We have indeed been on many wonderful adventures together, but it’s really a dual-sport. Yes, it is street-legal and off-road capable, but it is not very comfortable. It becomes exponentially less so on long-distance rides , even with upgrades.

Adventurers the world over will share similar stories of epic times on all types and sizes of bikes , including single-cylinder or “thumper” bikes like mine. The point is that while you can certainly have adventures riding whatever bike you fancy (or can afford), an ideal adventure motorcycle will take you everywhere you might want to go, and you’ll be a lot more comfortable.

Adventure Motorcycle FAQs

Good ground clearance, suspension travel, and large spoked wheels all help make navigating different types of terrain and obstacles easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Vibration, jarring, and wind buffeting are three big factors that are exhausting on long rides. Twin-cylinder engines or above will vibrate much less than single-cylinder bikes. Plush suspension will absorb changes in terrain, and a frame-mounted fairing will provide ultimate protection from the wind.

The lightest weight bike in this comparison is the new Aprilia Tuareg 660 , coming in just under 450 pounds (449.7, to be exact). The only other bike that comes close is the Yamaha Ténéré 700 , at 452 pounds. The heaviest is the venerable BMW R 1250 GSA , at 591 pounds. Leave it to German engineering to figure out how to perfectly balance that much weight on two wheels.

No surprises here. The priciest is Ducati, and the economy is a Suzuki. The new Multistrada V4 Rally can be yours in Ducati Red for just under $31,000. For that price, you can buy matching Suzuki V-Stroms for yourself and two of your friends. The base model V-Strom 650 comes in at $9,104 and has been successfully carrying adventure riders all over the world for nearly 20 years.

Suzuki has gone after the adventure market with their new V-Strom “DE” models . They are still pretty far behind the competition in side-by-side comparisons, but the pricing is so good it might not matter. At the other end of the spectrum in quality, price, and cutting-edge technology, the Tiger 1200 line has been completely revamped for 2023.

If you want to do lots of road riding, the very popular BMW GSAs , Triumph Tigers , and of course, the Ducati Multistrada will offer the most comfort on the longest rides. Heavier, large-displacement bikes tend to ride better on the road.

Riding off-road can mean a lot of different things. Generally speaking, the lighter-weight ADV bikes tend to be easier to handle (and pick up!) riding off-road. Look at the KTM 890 R (really any KTM), Tuareg 660 , and Ténéré 700 if you live for dirt.

This is where the mid-weight adventure bikes win. The Ducati DesertX is creating quite a stir. I dare you not to want this bike. Also touted as equally well-appointed for both are the Tiger 900 , the new kid Norden 901 , and the Africa Twin .

Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

By: Author Kelley Fager

Posted on Last updated: March 6, 2024

Looking for the best enduro motorcycle of 2024 but not sure which is right for you? Whether you’re a begi nner or looking to upgrade your dirt bike, you’re in the right place!

In this article, I’ll show you the differences between today’s enduro bikes vs the past, what type is best for you, and then the best enduro motorcycles to choose from based on your specific needs.

What is an enduro motorcycle?

There are two types of enduro dirt bikes, so it depends on which type of motorcycle you’re looking for. You can get one that’s built for riding trails and off-road only, or there’s a street legal version.

Is a 4 stroke the best enduro motorcycle of 2022?

Enduro off-road bike vs dual-purpose enduro bike

An enduro dirt bike for riding on trails is typically based on the motocross bike version but is tuned to be more comfortable riding off-road.

For example, the YZ250X is a 2 stroke enduro bike that’s based on the YZ250 2 stroke motocross bike. The YZ250X has softer suspension, a kickstand, and the engine is tuned more for low-end power, making it a good trail bike or hard enduro bike.

enduro travel motorcycle

A dual sport bike or dual-purpose motorcycle is the modern name for a street legal enduro dirt bike. Back when dirt bikes first started getting popular, and “enduro” was just a street legal version of an off-road dirt bike.

2021 Honda CRF300L Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

Today, an enduro bike is typically referring to a high-performance trail dirt bike or cross-country race bike.

2 Types of enduro motorcycles: which is best for you?

There are two different categories within the two different types of enduro motorcycles.

First, you have 2 stroke vs 4 stroke , which is the biggest difference. In short, a 2 stroke has a lighter handling feel, while a 4 stroke generally has a broader power curve with more “snappy” torque.

2022 Husqvarna TX300i Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

Then, you have an off-road vs cross-country difference between enduro dirt bikes. Most dirt bike manufacturers make one of each for every size dirt bike nowadays.

An off-road enduro motorcycle usually has these distinct characteristics:

  • Softer suspension
  • Smoother engine power
  • Wide-ratio transmission
  • Headlight/tail light

A cross-country enduro motorcycle usually has these distinct characteristics:

  • Firmer suspension
  • Slightly more aggressive engine tune
  • Close ratio transmission

For example, a KTM 250 XC-W is an off-road enduro bike, while a KTM 250 XC is a cross-country enduro bike. The 250 XC-W is better

Which is better for you: MX or Enduro bike?

What type of riding do you plan on doing? If it’s just off-road and trail riding, then an enduro bike is better than a motocross bike. Why?

Because an MX bike has stiff suspension and an abrupt (snappy) power curve that makes it harder to control while riding in the woods or out in the bush.

enduro travel motorcycle

With softer suspension, smooth power, and other trail accessories, an enduro dirt bike is simply more practical to ride off-road with.

Can you turn an MX bike into a woods bike ? Yes, but it takes a lot of work and money, so it would be much easier (and probably cheaper) to start on a dirt bike that’s already built for woods or trail riding. I know this because I tried riding many different motocross bikes in the woods…

New enduro motorcycles – Which brand is best?

Honestly, after putting this list together, I’m shocked at how many different new enduro motorcycles there are – that’s both good and bad for you!

It’s awesome because all of these companies are building more custom dirt bikes to fit your specific needs, but that also means it’s harder to make the “perfect choice” because you have… so many options to choose from.

So, that’s why I’m going to narrow down the best dirt bikes based on what you need after I show you the top rated dirt bikes from each of the best enduro motorcycle brands.

These are all of the latest enduro off-road bikes that you can buy new from your local dealer showroom:

KTM enduro motorcycles:

  • 250 XCF

The XC models are 2-strokes for cross-country racing, and the XC-W models are 2-stroke enduro models that are similar but better for trail riding due to softer suspension and wide-ratio transmissions, among other differences..

The XC-F models are 4-strokes for cross country enduro racing, and the EXC-F models are dual sport enduro models.

2021 KTM 150 XCW TPI 2 stroke enduro bike for trail riding

Husqvarna enduro motorcycles :

TE stands for two-stroke enduro model for off-road riding while the TX is the cross-country off-road racing bikes. FE stands for four-stroke enduro, FX is the racing version, and the “S” models are dual-sport motorcycles that are street legal.

Honda enduro motorcycles :

Honda only sells a few enduro dirt bikes, and they’re all 4-strokes. “RX” is the cross country race bikes, and the “X” model is a milder version for offroad and trail riding. The “RL” or “L” model is the dual-sport version for riding on-road and off-road.

2019 Honda CRF450L 4 stroke dual sport motorcycle

Yamaha enduro motorcycles :

2019 Yamaha YZ250FX four-stroke cross-country enduro dirt bike

The 125X and 250X are the 2 stroke enduro competition bikes that are based off of the MX bike version. The “WR” models are the wide-ration enduro bikes that have softer suspension and are better for slower or all-around trail riding. The FX models are the cross-country 4-stroke race bikes with more “snappy” power, firmer suspension, and a close-ratio gearset.

Kawasaki enduro motorcycles :

Do you want a 250 or 450 four-stroke enduro motorcycle? Kawasaki gives you two options, and they’re both made for cross-country racing.

GasGas enduro motorcycles :

2019 GasGas EC 300 ISDE Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

The EC models are 2 stroke enduro bikes for off-road and trail riding, while the EX models are cross-country enduro models for racing/faster trail riding. The models with an “F” are the 4-stroke enduro bikes.

Beta enduro motorcycles :

  • 300 XTrainer

Beta CrossTrainer 300 is one of the best enduro motorcycles for beginners

The 125, 200, 250 and 300 models are 2 stroke enduro bikes, while the 350, 390, 430, and 480 RR are the 4 stroke versions. The “RR-S” models are dual sport motorcycles, and the XTrainer is an enduro bike for beginners because it’s slightly smaller, smoother power and softer suspension.

Sherco enduro motorcycles :

  • 125 SE Factory
  • 250 SE Factory
  • 300 SE Factory
  • 250 SEF Factory
  • 300 SEF Factory
  • 450 SEF Factory
  • 500 SEF Factory

It’s pretty simple, the SE models are two-stroke enduro dirt bikes, and the SEF are the 4-stroke version.

Best enduro bike for beginners

Everybody wants a better and more powerful dirt bike, but is that actually what you need?

I knew I didn’t need a 450 , but I kept trying MX bikes and high-performance Enduro bikes for trail riding.

This didn’t work for me because I couldn’t use them to their full potential. It wasn’t until I decided to go back to the basics and buy a $650 beginner bike – an XR200 .

Dirt Bike Compression Test Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

It was slow, but it was comfortable and much easier to learn how to properly ride with confidence and control. I started riding faster on a slower bike.

Yep, so if you’re a beginner, these are the best starter enduro motorcycles:

  • Kawasaki KLX230R
  • Honda CRF250F
  • Kawasaki KLX300R
  • Beta 200 RR
  • Beta 300 XTrainer

Best small enduro motorcycle for short rider

Let’s face it, most dirt bikes are tall if you have short legs like me (27” inseam). You shouldn’t need to put both feet down on the ground because that’s poor technique , but being able to confidently touch with one foot can really boost your confidence.

There’s not many good ‘ medium-size dirt bikes ’ that are high performance because it would cost too much for dirt bike companies to make them – you can’t just slap an engine into a smaller frame because there’s so much testing involved to get it to handle properly.

With that said, these are the best small enduro bikes if you’re a short rider:

  • Beta XTrainer

Beta makes their frames on these two 2-stroke dirt bikes slightly smaller for the smaller or beginner rider. They’re easier to handle and make good, smooth power. Electric start and oil injection get rid of most objections to owning a 2 stroke dirt bike.

What are the best hard enduro bikes?

Hard enduro riding is tight and highly technical trail riding. Endurocross racing could be considered hard enduro riding, but there’s specific models that are typically used for hard enduro off-road riding.

The best hard enduro bikes are 2 strokes because they’re lighter, making them handle better. They also don’t stall as easily, and overheating is less of an issue because they run cooler and the engine/transmission oil is separate compared to most 4-strokes.

Most hard enduro riders use these dirt bikes:

  • KTM 300XCW TPI
  • Husqvarna TX 300I
  • Sherco SE 300 Factory

What’s the best all-around dirt bike?

If you want to ride your dirt bike everywhere – including on the street, then you need a dual-sport motorcycle. It doesn’t do any certain type of riding ‘great’, but it’s pretty good at everything.

2014 Yamaha WR250R Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

It’s a compromise to be able to legally ride anywhere. They come with DOT dual-purpose tires, which are usually a 50/50 combination tread.

This means that it has knobs for better traction on the dirt compared to a street tire, but the knobs are not very big, giving it a smoother surface for a comfortable ride on the street without lots of vibration.

Best dual sport motorcycle 2024

There are quite a few street-legal dirt bikes to choose from. The more off-road miles you plan to put on it, the smaller you should go with bike size.

Heavy dual sport or adventure bikes are built to handle riding in the dirt, but they just get hard to handle. It gets even worse when you have to pick them up off the ground.

With that said, these are the best street legal enduro motorcycles:

  • Yamaha TW200
  • Kawasaki KLX230
  • Honda CRF300L
  • Kawasaki KLX300
  • KTM 350 EXC-F
  • Honda CRF450RL
  • KTM 500 EXC-F
  • Kawasaki KLR650

Best lightweight enduro for on-road & off-road

Just want a modern, lightweight street legal dirt bike ? Unfortunately, there’s no “perfect bike” for this, because they’re either too heavy, too tall, too hard to ride, or just not enough power.

The best lightweight street legal enduro bikes are:

  • Husqvarna FE 350s

The KLX250 S is about as light as it gets for a street legal dirt bike that still has decent power. The Suzuki DR200S weighs about 20lbs less but the power is very underwhelming. The WR250R is very comparable, but Yamaha recently discontinued it.

The KTM 350 EXC-F has considerably more power and performance. It also costs a lot more. If you’re short, it’s going to be a struggle because it’s one of the tallest dirt bike sizes . The Husky FE 350s is basically the same motorcycle as the KTM 350 but with white plastics and a few minor differences.

2021 Husqvarna FE 350s Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

Best 125-200cc enduro bike

Whether you’re looking for your first enduro bike or just want the lightest motorcycle you can find, a 125, 150, or 200 cc is an excellent choice. They still make good power, but they handle so much better off-road than a 250 and especially a 450.

It’s not just the weight that makes them so much easier to lean, turn and control, but it’s the less rotating mass that makes them feel even lighter!

For example, a 125 two-stroke engine weighs about 50 lbs, and a 450 four-stroke engine weighs about 65 lbs – that extra 15 pounds of rotating parts makes it handle like a much heavier motorcycle, especially when you rev the engine higher.

These are the best 125-200 cc enduro motorcycles for off-road:

  • Yamaha YZ125X
  • Sherco 125 SE Factory
  • KTM 150 XCW
  • Husqvarna TE 150
  • Beta 125 RR

Best 250 enduro bike

Whether you want to race off-road in the desert, enduro, hare scramble, or have a track and trail bike, a 250cc enduro bike will do a good job. They’re still fairly light but don’t have so much power that you’ll get your arms ripped off like a 450 would.

With that said, I still don’t recommend these bikes if you’re a beginner – go to the beginner section to pick the best trail dirt bike for you.

250 2-stroke for trail riding:

  • GasGas EC 250
  • KTM 250 XCW
  • Husqvarna TE 250

250 2-stroke for cross-country racing:

  • GasGas EX 250
  • Sherco 250 SE Factory
  • Yamaha YZ250X
  • Beta 250 RR

250 4-stroke:

  • Yamaha WR250F (trail riding)
  • Yamaha YZ250FX
  • Honda CRF250RX
  • KTM 250 XCF
  • Kawasaki KX250X
  • GasGas EX 250F

Best 300 enduro bike

“KTM” is almost synonymous with “300” when it comes to riding off-road, and especially hard enduro. They started making a 300cc 2 stroke since the late 90s, and have been tweaking and perfecting it so much that every manufacturer that sells Enduro motorcycles learned from KTM and jumped on board – this is great for you because there’s more competition and custom choices.

KTM won virtually every 300 shootout contest that dirt bike magazines did for a while, but they’re all really good and competitive now. Each model just has its own characteristics and quirks.

Best 300 2-stroke for trail riding:

  • KTM 300 XCW
  • Husqvarna TE 300
  • GasGas EC 300

Best 300 2-stroke for cross-country racing:

  • Husqvarna TX 300
  • GasGas EX 300
  • Beta 300 RR
  • Sherco SE Factory 300

Best 350 enduro bike

A 350cc dirt bike seemed pretty odd when KTM first introduced it back in 2011, but for an average rider like you and I, it’s become one of the most popular sizes – why is that?

Well, it’s because a 250cc four-stroke just doesn’t have quite enough “snap” for some riders, while a 450 is just more than you really need. So, a 350 seems to be the perfect compromise because it handles better than a 450 without losing too much power (mostly down low).

It’s a mystery why Yamaha hasn’t developed their own 350cc enduro bike yet…

These are the best 350 enduro bikes for racing and trail riding:

  • KTM 350 XCF
  • Husqvarna FX 350
  • GasGas EX 350F
  • Beta 350 RR

These are the best 350 enduro bikes for dual-purpose riding:

  • Beta 350 RR-S

Best 450 enduro bike

A 450cc dirt bike has become the ultimate “man’s bike” because it’s basically unlimited power – 99.99% of us can’t take advantage of all that torque and horsepower. But, it is nice to be able to stick it in 2nd or 3rd gear and stay there for a whole trail loop!

They’ve also become very reliable – if you’re not constantly and needlessly bouncing off the rev limiter. You can get hundreds of hours on the engine before needing to rebuild it.

These are the top 450 enduro bikes for trail riding:

  • KTM 450 XCF-W
  • Yamaha WR450F
  • Honda CRF450X
  • Husqvarna FE 450

These are the top 450 enduro bikes for cross-country/desert racing:

  • KTM 450 XCF
  • Yamaha YZ450FX
  • Honda CRF450RX
  • Kawasaki KX450X
  • Husqvarna FX 450
  • GasGas EX 450F
  • Sherco 450 SEF Factory

The Top 10 Enduro Motorcycles of 2024

Just want a simple list of the top rated enduro bikes so you can choose the one that fits your needs? This list includes bikes that are lightweight, short, good for beginners, cross-country racing, trail riding, track & trail, dual sport riding, and more!

These are the top 10 Enduro motorcycles of 2024 from smallest to biggest:

Best off-road enduro motorcycle 2024

For strictly off-road riding, and more specifically trail riding, these are the best enduro motorcycles (dirt bikes):

  • Husqvarna TX 300i

Best 2 stroke enduro dirt bike

Whether you want a 125 or 300cc 2 stroke, there’s many models to pick from compared to 20 years ago.

These are the best enduro dirt bikes (2 stroke):

  • Husqvarna TX 250i

Best 4 stroke enduro bike

You can choose from a 250cc all the way up to a 700cc enduro bike, but the best sizes for off-road riding are 500cc and under.

The best 4 stroke enduro motorcycles are:

Best enduro motorcycle of all time

This is a tough question because it really depends on what you want to do with the bike. I would consider the KTM 300 XCW and the Yamaha WR450F among the best enduro motorcycles of all time.

They are both powerful, good handling, reliable, and overall great dirt bikes if you’re an experienced off-road rider.

Best enduro motorcycle for heavy rider

Whether you’re a beginner or have been riding for years, it helps to have some extra low-end torque if you weigh more than the average rider.

The KLX300R is a good beginner enduro bike if you’re heavy but new to dirt biking. If you need to upgrade for more performance, a 300 2-stroke ( KTM 300) or 450 4-stroke (WR450F) are solid bikes for heavier riders.

Most powerful enduro motorcycle

Are you looking for the baddest and fastest enduro bike? The Husqvarna 701 Enduro is the most powerful enduro motorcycle with 74 horsepower – are you in the market for one or do you just think it’s cool?

Motorcycles continue to get faster, but that’s not necessarily good. There will always be new riders coming into this sport (maybe that’s you right now!), but have more power is not a good thing… at least not right away… or even for a long time.

Is more power ACTUALLY the best way to go faster?

In fact, 99% of dirt bike or enduro riders can’t take full advantage of the power that a 450 dirt bike has. It can actually slow you down and cause you to get exhausted quickly if you aren’t physically fit and a pro rider.

Instead, riding a smaller (slower) enduro dirt bike will almost certainly help us improve our riding because it requires us to be more efficient and smoother. That way, you can improve your riding technique much quicker, which will make so much more difference than upgrading your motorcycle.

Best cheap enduro motorcycle

Can’t afford a newer model dirt bike but still want a high-performance off-road enduro bike? While older dirt bikes don’t handle as well or have as much power, they are still very capable of riding fast or on technical trails – especially if you get the suspension set up for your weight and the engine properly tuned. These models are the cheapest enduro motorcycles you can buy:

  • Kawasaki KDX 200
  • Kawasaki KDX 220R
  • Yamaha YZ250

The KDX 200 and 220 are essentially an older version of the KTM 200 . They’re a little bit softer and mellower but are fantastic trail bikes because they’re fairly easy to ride and have a slightly lower seat height.

KDX200 is a good 2 stroke trail bike for beginners

YZ250 – An MX bike??

The YZ250 is a motocross bike, yes, but the engine is so versatile and reliable that you can set it up for woods or enduro riding fairly easily. a late 90s to early 2000s YZ 250 can be found fairly cheap compared to enduro bikes that are 10-20 years newer.

2000 Yamaha YZ250 Best Enduro Motorcycle Based On Your Size & Budget [2024]

KLX300R – older or newer

The KLX300 isn’t quite on par with modern four-stroke enduro bikes, but it’s better than an air-cooled trail bike. They’re better if you’re a beginner, older rider, or just want to casually trail ride while having a soft enduro motorcycle characteristic.

How to safely ride off-road with control

You don’t need the best bike to have fun dirt biking. You don’t need a fast bike to ride faster.

A confident rider on a ‘slow bike’ will beat a nervous beginner rider on a ‘fast bike’ every time on the trails.  It comes down to your technique, and I want to show you how to learn these basics with less seat time. Click here to get started for free.

Thursday 30th of November 2023

In my days when we’d say “enduro” we meant street legal off-road bikes that had headlights, turn signals, speedometers, dual foot-pegs, and usually 4-stroke engines.

And when we said “dirt bikes” we meant scramblers used for motocross which were not street legal, came with next to nothing, single rider, and had 2-stroke engines.

So when I came across your article titled “Best Enduro Motorcycle” I was left rather disappointed to find you predominantly covered scramblers!

Is it really that hard for you to understand their differences and title your articles appropriately, next time? :(

Kelley Fager

Friday 1st of December 2023

Hey JM, I'm sorry you were disappointed. That's why I started the article explaining the titles and differences and how most people today refer to "Enduro" bikes as high-performance trail bikes. For street legal off-road bikes, you should check out my article on the Best Dual Sport Motorcycles here.

Tuesday 16th of May 2023

Thank you Kelly Really good guide with heaps of information, I am just getting into 'Green Lane' riding over here in the UK (more a mix of old dirt roads, some rocks and gullies, plenty of mud interspersed with road sections. I'm just under 16st pretty fit and a young 60, have many years of fast (1000cc plus) road riding but my off road experience is limited. I think I'd be better with a sub 400cc bike and would be buying used for around £2000, prefer a 4 stroke (no issue with refuelling and softer power delivery for the trickybits), something with torque. Tough ask but what would you suggest?, thanks, Graham.

Hey Graham, I'm glad you found this helpful! For the Green Lane, it doesn't have to be street legal, correct? This category of bike is hard to find because there isn't much for "easy to ride" 4 strokes with good performance. Something like an XR250, KLX300, TTR250 or DRZ250 might be a good choice within that price range if you can find one over there.

Excellent well thought out helpful article.

The Best Enduro Bikes In 2022

Is the wild trail calling to you? Then one of these is what you need

The differences between MX and Enduro bikes might be minimal, but they make all the difference when riding out in the open countryside, whether in competition, or simply having a blast with friends on any Sunday. With such a large choice of models, it can be hard to decide which one is best for you so let this list help you.

KTM 300 EXC TPi

What KTM doesn’t know about building brilliant MX and enduro bikes isn’t worth knowing. For decades now, the Austrian firm has been building off-road motorcycles that have consistently not only been the choice of experts but that have also consistently filled podiums in any country you care to mention.

One technology KTM has perfected is fuel injection for its two-stroke engines, a huge advance that has transformed the reliability and fuel economy of two-strokes.

What it has also done is make bikes such as the KTM 300 EXC TPI much more rideable: two-strokes produce lots and lots of power but harnessing it can often be the job for an expert. The fuel injection on the 300 EXC smooths out power delivery without hurting power output: it’s still very fast but with less of a light-switch delivery.

Elsewhere, the KTM 300 EXC TPI is all class: WP suspension, brilliant packaging, a 2.3-gallon gas tank and build quality and looks that almost make you not want to get it dirty.

Not for the faint-hearted!

Husqvarna TE300i

So, here’s the thing. Husqvarna is now owned by the Pierer Group, which also owns KTM and GasGas. With that being the case, you would expect the Husqvarna 300cc two-stroke enduro bike to be a badge-engineered KTM 300 EXC, wouldn’t you?

Well, it’s not quite that simple. Yes, it shares all its major components with the KTM - engine, chassis, suspension, wheels - but somehow Husqvarna has managed to give the TE300i its own personality and feel.

It is a little heavier than the KTM, at 234 pounds (the KTM tips the scales at 228 pounds) but this weight isn’t the handicap you might think. For enduro, you actually want a bit more weight for better traction and cornering and braking performance.

It might be largely the same as the KTM 300 EXC TPI but, somehow, having the Husqvarna name on the tank makes it that little bit more exclusive and it certainly loses none of the ability.

Honda CRF450RL

If absolute reliability and durability is your number one priority, then you could do a lot worse than looking at the Honda CRF450RL.

In a way, you could say that the Honda is over-engineered, weighing in at a slightly porky 291 pounds but that weight simply means that it will soak up a lot of punishment and come out intact.

The engine is a four-stroke, single-cylinder unit of 449.7cc. putting out nearly 53 horsepower. Being a four-stroke, the power curve is linear and much easier to control than a peaky two-stroke. The crankshaft is deliberately heavy to add inertia and enhance low-RPM torque. It’s perfect for plugging through muddy conditions or negotiating technical sections.

The gearbox has six speeds, with the sixth gear being almost an overdrive gear for road use or high-speed off-road stretches.

Honda has been making off-road bikes for even longer than KTM and it shows in the packaging and handling dynamics. Experts might go faster on a KTM or Husqvarna, but the Honda, even though it is large and powerful, will reward the less-skilled rider by just being so forgiving.

Comes fitted with a head- and tail light, indicators, and a license plate hanger, making it fully road legal.

Yamaha WR450F

One of the great enduro bikes. The WR450F (‘WR’ for ‘wide ratio’, as in the gearbox) might have displacement and its four-stroke engine in common with the Honda but it is a completely different beast.

For 2022, Yamaha has shaved some weight off the WR, making it weigh in at 262 pounds, bringing it closer to the best two-strokes but even so, still adding 34 pounds to the KTM 300 EXC TPI. Chassis and suspension have been tweaked to improve the handling, while the engine has received internal changes to help with reliability and longevity.

Like the Honda, it comes with head and tail lights but indicators and license

plate hangers are not included. One of the best enduro bikes, with a long history of development behind it.

KTM 350 EXC-F

If you have to buy orange but you want a four-stroke, then this is the model for you. Unlike the other four-strokes in this list, the KTM pares weight right down to 237 pounds, although power is ‘only’ 35 horsepower, against around 50 horsepower for the Yamaha and Honda.

It doesn’t matter: this is one of the best enduro bikes available today: all of KTM’s knowledge has been put into this, making it one of the most successful enduro bikes in competition.

The best thing about the 350 EXC-F is that it might pack a 350cc four-stroke motor but it has the chassis dynamics, handling, braking, and cornering of a 250cc.

Top-spec WP X-PLOR suspension is fully adjustable and, as you would expect, the rest of the bike has been extensively developed making it arguably the best KTM enduro bike of the lot.

While the road motorcycle world is busy preparing for electric power, it was inevitable that the off-road world would have to start considering volts over octane rating.

On paper, an electric drivetrain is all wrong for an off-road bike: overly heavy and with range and re-charge time being issues not easily overcome in the middle of nowhere.

Having said that, the Zero FX with a 7.2kWh motor does have a 91-mile range which might be enough for most amateur riders, if not serious racers. There is a 3.2kWh version also, which will have a better range.

Weight is 289 pounds, which brings it into line with 450cc petrol-engined enduro models but the big thing here is the lack of clutch and a monstrous 78 foot-pounds of torque: twist the throttle and hang on for dear life!

Another bonus is the lack of noise: you really could ride this on the open ground behind your house and not bother anyone all day.

Is it as accomplished off-road as the Honda or Yamaha in this list? Probably not. The suspension is nowhere near as good as that fitted to Yamaha, Honda, or KTM but that’s not to say that it shouldn’t be a lot of fun.

But, if we take an enduro bike as one that can be ridden off- or on-road, then the Zero FX makes a convincing argument for itself as both an urban and city runabout and an occasional enduro bike.

KTM Freeride EX-C

Finishing off with another electric model, this time there can be no doubt about its off-road credentials.

The KTM Freeride EX-C is a bit of an all-rounder, being just as capable on the MX track as it is on the wild country trail. The motor is roughly equivalent to a 125cc petrol engine and produces 24 horsepower.

The battery will give around two hours of cross-country riding or 45 minutes of MX and can be charged to 100-percent in 110 minutes, or 80-percent in 75 minutes. The motor is water cooled to ensure perfect operation in any conditions.

WP XPLOR suspension proves the Freeride’s off-road credentials and the model breaks with tradition by mounting both front and rear brake levers on the handlebars.

Simple to ride and unsurprisingly brilliant off-road.

What exactly is an Enduro Bike?

It’s easy to be confused over the difference between MX and enduro bikes. Both are off-road motorcycles, yes, but there are subtle differences, not all of them visual.

An enduro race generally takes place from point-to-point, cross-country, as opposed to the closed track of an MX race. To that end, an enduro bike can have a larger gas tank as the distances can be longer and front and rear lights/indicators to make them road legal. They might also have more protection in terms of sump bash plates and hand guards (bark bashers).

Not so obvious are engines that have been tuned for reliability and durability, as opposed to outright performance. MX bikes tend to have sharp power and torque curves, which are great for an MX track but not great for plugging through mud and over obstacles on an enduro course. An enduro bike might have quieter exhaust mufflers to make them street legal and will almost certainly have gearboxes with wide-ratio gears.

In terms of engine displacement, enduro bikes match MX bikes in that there is a wide variety of engine sizes, generally from 125cc up to 450cc, two- and four-stroke.

There is a huge choice of enduro bikes, with many manufacturers having several models in their catalogs, so how do you choose? Well, to start you off, you can read through our list of what we consider to be the best enduro bikes right now, in 2022. Of course, that’s not to say that they are the perfect bikes for your needs, but at least it will get you started.

Q: What does Enduro mean in motorcycles?

An enduro motorcycle is designed with durability and reliability over outright performance, as with an MX bike. They are heavier to withstand rougher treatment and have longer gearing more suited to riding long distances off-road.

Q: Are Enduro motorcycles street-legal?

Many enduro bikes have lights and indicators fitted, along with quieter exhaust mufflers to make. them road legal.

Q: What is the best motorbike for Enduro?

KTM makes some of the best enduro bikes, but Yamaha and Honda have a ton of experience also. Which is best depends a lot on where you are riding and whether you are competing or riding for fun.

Q: What is the difference between a dirt bike and an enduro bike?

A dirt bike will be lighter and with a much sharper power delivery, designed to catapult the bike out of turns. An enduro bike tends to be heavier and more durable, as well as has a larger fuel tank for greater range. An enduro bike will also often have lights and indicators to make them road legal.

The 11 Best Adventure Motorcycles You Can Buy Right Now

Whether riding on asphalt, gravel or dirt, an adventure bike never waivers. These are some of the best you can buy right now.

enduro travel motorcycle

By Michael Frank

Adventure bikes have been on a tear since the start of the pandemic. No other category in motorcycling is hotter. “Adventure,” however, is a loose term. And the best way to understand what it means when applied to bikes would be a moto that can go off-road but that, depending on setup and especially the variable of weight, will be either very capable for the average rider to use when ripping through the grime — or not so much.

Flip that coin over, however, and the bikes that may be a handful in the dirt (if you’re not a world-class rider) will be better and more comfortable on the road.

But whether you care about riding a lot of dirt or barely any, off-road positioning can be super comfy. You sit upright, not bent forward in racing style, and not reclined in the La-Z-Boy arms out/legs out bagger posture. Instead, your feet are underneath you, so you can stand easily to absorb the hit of rolling over a log or a speed bump, and with longer travel suspensions, they soak up the spine pounding that other bikes can’t.

Still, if that description unites adventure motorcycles, a chasm divides the breed. Just like saying you drive an “SUV,” that could be a lifted Jeep Wrangler , or that could be its distant cousin, the Renegade —which happens to share a platform with a Fiat 500L and is no rock-crawling 4×4 Godzilla.

This guide breaks down the adventure category into sections, loosely defined first by weight, with the heavier bikes leading the pack, then moves to progressively lighter models. Note that heft alone isn’t the only decision to think about. A bigger engine (generally) makes a bike more powerful, and twin-cylinder (or triple) configs rattle your body and the bike less than single cylinders. Fairings add weight but also cut through the air, reducing fatigue, and a bike designed to carry luggage might also be a factor in your thought process, as (should be) fuel capacity, which enables more range between fill-ups, and that can be critical if you define adventure as roaming farther from the grid.

We’ve put all of those considerations into our decision tree thingamajig, and it’s spit out the following 11 bikes.

Could the list be even longer? Of course, it could! Because everyone knows the best motorcycle rides are defined not by the roads—but by the laugh session at the coffee stop arguing over which bike is “best,” and why.

Adventure Touring Motorcycles

two people riding motorcycles on a curvy road

Pros: Best for reeling in long miles

Cons: Weight can make them hard to handle in off-road, technical terrain

The heaviest beasts of the realm can get you there and back, especially if you define “there” as a distant dot on the globe. The brands in this mix are all fighting BMW’s R1250 GS for a piece of the “serious” ADV space. Serious because: money. None of these bikes comes cheaply, and for a good reason, since you’re getting high-end tech like synced braking actuation, ABS and traction control, at least twin-cylinder engines, and systems you can tune for all sorts of differing conditions. But these bikes are taller and heavier, making them a challenge in the dirt.

Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special

harley davidson pan america 1250 special motorcycle

There are two reasons this bike exists. First, Harley-Davidson needed to evolve its engine tech for a world of more onerous emissions restrictions and (eventually) smaller displacement demands. The all-new Revolution Max series of V-Twin engines will address both challenges. Second: Their core buyer is aging out of riding, and the current sales boom in bikes is, as we already mentioned, all about the ADV category where, previously, Harley had nothing to sell. Luckily, the Pan-Am is a smash hit, largely thanks to the muscle of its thrilling, 150 hp liquid-cooled V-Twin. Five ride modes and a suspension that raises for off-road riding add icing to the equation.

Triumph Tiger 1200

triumph tiger 1200 motorcycle

Triumph’s latest Tiger ticks all the boxes, in part because Triumph is offering so many versions. You can have it in five different configs: Some with more suspension travel and some with larger fuel tanks for greater range, as well as with either spoked wheels (for off-road) or cast hoops (better for pavement). Triumph also addressed the issue of a too-tall seat height (now down to a very accessible 33.5 inches) and weight: the new 1200 is up to 37 pounds lighter than the BMW GS it’s poised to battle. The kicker, literally, is that you’re getting Triumph’s signature, ultra-free-revving 148 hp triple and off/on-road modes, all to make the Tiger 1200 as versatile and fun as any bike in the segment.

Price: $19,100

Honda Africa Twin

honda africa twin motorcycle

The Africa Twin checks in just a little lighter than competitors in this segment, thanks to constant tweaking by Honda to make the Africa Twin increasingly competitive, even making it greener (to meet tighter EU regs) while upping the total output of its 1,100 cc engine to 100hp. Honda also lets riders dig into the custom mode sandbox, offering wheelie control, cornering ABS, rear-lift control and DCT cornering detection and three engine-braking levels and seven torque control levels. Honda also manages a reasonable 33.5-inch seat height in the low position but still ekes out a generous 10 inches of ground clearance. Oh, and the Africa Twin is also relatively affordable compared to rivals. The only reason to balk? The rumor mill is rampant that Honda’s coming with a far lighter, 500 cc adventure bike.

Price: $14,499

BMW R1250 GS Adventure

bmw r1250 gs adventure

BMW’s boxer engine design puts the weight lower in the frame, so even though we’re talking about 549 pounds for a 2022 R1250 GS, the king of the realm remains lust-worthy for its legendary low-speed handling on and off-road and incredibly excellent on-pavement cornering. Simply put, a motorcycle isn’t a car: You must use your body weight and movement on the bike as a counterbalance. The higher the engine sits in the chassis, the harder that is to do. You’ll spot GS’s all over the globe precisely because they’re the ultimate touring machines (wink) that, despite their bulk, aren’t as exhausting to ride when the conditions get sketchier, and your brain and body are running on caffeine and fumes. Oh, sure, just like the others, they come with traction control, ABS, and even (if you want) a heated seat. But the core argument for wanting one is about simple physics.

Price: $22,860

Ducati Desert X

ducati desert x motorcycle

We could just as easily include the excellent Multistrada V4 on this list, but the Desert X is a bit lighter, at 492 pounds, and the latest flavor from Ducati, and it’s a machine that’s cost-competitive, too. Ducati manages to make its 110 hp ramp progressively, rather than zip into warp drive and loop you off the machine. And speaking of friendly, if the stock 34.4-inch seat height doesn’t fit, options let you go up to a higher 35.2 inches or down to 33.3 inches. And while Ducati claims a standard 5.5 gallons nets you 250 miles of range, an optional extra 2.1-gallon rear tank would yield 370 miles of roaming. Oh, and if the 937cc motor seems small compared to the bruisers listed here, its 110hp and 10,000 RPM rev limit are anything but. Plus—not that you didn’t notice—but this bike is gorgeous.

60/40 Motorcycles

person riding a motorcycle through the desert

Pros: Balance the want for dirt against the need for street

Cons: Some are more capable in the slop; some are more capable on asphalt

Which side is 60 and which is 40? Is 60 dirt and 40 road—or vice versa? Well, brother, that’s for you to decide. Scroll further down, and you’ll see the “dual-sport” category, which the cognoscenti know are just MX bikes with license plate holders and headlights.By contrast, 60/40 bikes are the multitools of the genre, neither as powerful as the adventure touring machines but also not as porky and far more comfortable on the highway than the dual-sports.

Our picks for the 60/40 segment share a few essential traits: Enough ground clearance to be decent off-road, some sort of fairing and at least partial windshield, and decent luggage hauling and aftermarket parts availability. But sift through this list, and you’ll see some skew better at playing on a dirt trail while others lean toward making your morning commute a joy. Wants? Needs? You’re the arbiter. We’re just relaying the info.

KTM 890 Adventure R

ktm 890 adventure r motorcycle

With ten inches of ground clearance, a WP-tuned suspension with 9.4 inches of travel both front and rear, Bosch traction control and ABS systems and weighing a mere 432 pounds, the 890 Adventure R will easily outmaneuver the heavyweights above. And with a sixth gear and 89 hp from its silken parallel twin, it’ll out-muscle the lighter weight 60/40s on this list and run smoother than all those single-cylinder machines. The 890 Adventure R sits right at the happy place sweet spot of ADV bikes, with capability and gravitas but not too much bulk. The rub: Having 14+ bones to afford one—and climbing the ladder to that tall, 34.6-inch seat height.

Price: $14,199

Yamaha Tenere 700

yamaha tenere 700 motorcycle

Twin engines add a lust factor to riding — not only because they’re way more aurally satisfying, but because their balanced operation doesn’t vibrate parts—or you—as much as single cylinders bouncing up and down. They do tend to add weight, however, and at 452 pounds, the Tenere is the heaviest bike of this 60/40 sub-bruiser slot.

Its twin’s 72 hp comes up shy of the KTM 890 Adventure R’s ponies, and the Tenere’s 9.4 inches of ground clearance also don’t quite meet that KTM’s ride height, but you’re not spending nearly as much for the Yamaha.

Also, vs. some of the smaller bikes here, note the 215-mile range between fueling. Add a chassis that’s very well set up for touring, including easy mounting points for bags, decent armoring out of the box, a reasonably-sized fairing and a tank made for leg gripping while standing, and you have the pinnacle of Yamahas.

Speaking of apexes, the 34.4-inch seat height is on par with that of the KTM 890, though fortunately, there are lowering kits for both bikes.

Price: $10,299

Suzuki DR 650 S

suzuki dr 650 s motorcycle

A carbureted bike!! In 2022? Look. Even if trendier, newer bikes in this fold, like the KTM in the next entry, have hewed toward modern tech like fuel injection, ABS and switchable traction control, there are downsides, particularly when it comes to trailside fixes and MacGuyvering said repairs. The DR 650 comes in 15 pounds lighter than that KTM Adventure 390 and produces the same horsepower. It’s on this list as the zag to the KTM 390’s zig because, with a taller seat height (34.8 inches), it could be more comfortable for taller humans, and speaking of that, you’re getting 10.4 inches of ground clearance, too.

All that adds up to a more capable off-roader, though the counter-argument merits your attention, too, since the DR 650’s relatively low, 366-pound weight feels a little top heavy, and it wouldn’t hurt Suzuki to add a sixth gear to make highway riding more comfortable. Still, it’s hard to argue with the approachable price and the dead 50/50 split of application.

Price: $6,999

KTM Adventure 390

ktm adventure 390 motorcycle

Yeah, yeah, there are two flavors of KTM on this list. This variety skews more toward the pavement, especially because Its smooth, 42 hp single delivers very linear torque from a unit that’s way less buzzy than many engines in this class. So highway miles melt away far more comfortably—and the bonus of a sixth gear helps in that department, too. The 33.6-inch seat height isn’t too tall for most riders, either.

The cons? Not quite eight inches of ground clearance will push you straight toward KTM’s prodigious library of mods, including bolting on a high fender, ditching the stock rubber for more aggressive knobs, and tossing the plastic skid plate for a KTM’s Powerparts aluminum one. That’ll get you closer to a 55/45 machine, if not the monster 890 Adventure R—but we’re talking half the cost, too. Plus: the combination of a 3.8-gallon fuel capacity and about 60 mpg fuel economy delivers more range than you’ll find from alternatives.

Price: $6,599

Enduro / Dual Sport Motorcycles

person riding a motorcycle down a dirt hill

Pros: Lightweight, flickable, and agile in the dirt

Cons: You might rattle out your molars at freeway speeds

On the spectrum of adventure bikes, enduros and dual sports are the best ones equipped for tight trail rides rather than long-distance touring. An enduro or dual can handle a few bags and some cargo — but the ideal way to use one of these smaller bikes is to drive to your destination, set up camp, then go exploring.

Due to their smaller fuel tanks, they don’t have a superb range, so trailering them to base camp isn’t uncommon. Likewise, you don’t want to spend days on end in the saddle; they’re not far from road-legal dirtbikes.

Honda CRF450RL

honda crf450rl motorcycle

At 291 pounds and banging out 42 hp, you’re getting 6.9 hp per pound. If it feels insanely quick, that’s because the CRF450RL is very much an MX ripper with turn signals and a place to mount a license plate. The seat height cranes at an unfriendly (to anyone who isn’t over six feet tall) 37.2 inches, but once aboard. 12.6 inches of ground clearance lets you rollick over every whoop in your way. This bike is an attack dog and will blast holes through almost all off-road terrain.

Downsides? Like the 450R on which it’s based, the seat is rock hard, and the tiny two-gallon fuel tank limits your range.

Price: $10,000

Kawasaki KLX 300

kawasaki klx 300 motorcycle

A mellow, 23 hp single and the low, 302-pound weight makes the KLX the ideal plated dirt bike for learning to mess around off asphalt. It won’t scare you, but with 10.8 inches of ground clearance, it’ll chew through singletrack comfortably. That Honda will eat its shorts, but you’re getting this Kawasaki to play, not to capture a checkered flag. One mod: Its 35.2-inch seat height might be too sky-scrapery for many riders; get an aftermarket lowering kit to address the issue. Like the CRF450RL, the KLX’s two-gallon fuel capacity requires you to pack extra gas or closely watch what’s in the tank.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce Review

MV Agusta has been teasing the world with talk of a new adventure bike for several years, but the on-again, off-again nature of a mystery bike called the Lucky Explorer, in its first showing at EICMA in 2021, and the uncertainty of whether or not MV Agusta would actually have the capital to invest in such an endeavor, left many of us yawning like a fat Italian who just ate too much pasta.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce Review

By Keith Dowdle

However, just over the Alps, a little company in Austria was watching what was happening and decided to step in yet again to bring new life to a company that didn’t seem to have a clear path to success. Not the types to sit around and wait, the executives at Pierer Mobility took control of MV earlier this year, two years ahead of their original plan, and moved ahead with the project, rebadging the bike as the Enduro Veloce, or fast enduro. And fast it is.

Arriving at the global press intro in Cagliari, Italy, on the island of Sardinia, we really didn’t know what to expect. An all-new bike from a very recently reorganized management team, Austrians and Italians thrown together to work as one. Were we walking into a hornets’ nest, or would we experience la dolce vita? Fortunately, motorcycle enthusiasts are motorcycle enthusiasts no matter where they come from, and it was quickly apparent that these people were all moto enthusiasts. Whether Italian or Austrian, the team that built this new machine simply loves motorcycles, and it shows through with this bike.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce right side

While the Lucky Explorer name is gone from the side of the tank, that badging is still present on parts of the bike, as is the 9.5 stamp on the side of the motor, which harkens back to yet another early naming convention for this bike called the LXP, in which there was originally a 9.5 and a 5.5, signifying units carrying a 931cc or 550cc motor, respectively. By the way, the LXP Orioli (the 9.5 Lucky Explorer), is currently available in very limited numbers with a Lucky Explorer paint livery and lots of trick parts. Every bike is signed by the four-time Dakar winner Edi Orioli himself—who actually raced bikes branded Cagiva, but that’s a whole ’nother story in and of itself.

When you see any MV Agusta for the first time, the beauty, quality of the craftsmanship, and attention to detail really get your attention—and the Enduro Veloce is no different. Sporting the traditional Ago red and silver paint (a nod to Giacomo Agostini), the Enduro Veloce is instantly recognizable as an MV Agusta in these classic colors. The bike is absolutely beautiful, and while it rides on a very off-road-oriented 21/18-inch front and rear wheel configuration, the thought of throwing such a beautiful machine down the trail on an adventure ride seems ridiculous to me. That said, MV is touting this bike to be just as capable as its new cousin, the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally. Yep, that’s right, not just any KTM 890. The Rally version was specifically noted as a competitor for the EV. (Other direct competitors, as noted by the MV team, include the Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak, BMW R 1300 GS, and Honda Africa Twin.)

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce action

To be fair, this new bike comes equipped with very capable, fully adjustable front and rear suspension and enough travel—8.27 inches front and rear, and ground clearance of nine inches—to make it at least comparable to the 890 Rally. The 48mm Sachs front fork has adjustable settings for spring preload, compression, and rebound damping—and the rear rides on a twin-sided aluminum swingarm with a progressive link and a Sachs fully adjustable shock, which includes a hand-adjustable spring preload knob, accessible while sitting on the bike, along with compression and rebound damping.

The suspension worked flawlessly on the road during the press intro, and while we didn’t get a chance to ride the bike off-road with any aggression, it was evident in even the small amount of off-road riding we did that this bike is capable of doing whatever a deep-pocket owner wants to throw its way. Did I mention the $22,998 price tag? That, and the fact that the bike is just beautiful to look at, make it highly unlikely that anyone will be riding the Moab Hard Enduro on this thing. But it is nice to know that you can access the most remote campsites after what will surely be an exhilarating road trip.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce TFT display

Exhilaration would be a good word to summarize the entire Enduro Veloce riding experience. From the moment you fire up the compact, lightweight 931cc inline triple with its double overhead cams lifting 12 valves and pushing out 124 horsepower, the sound alone brings an instantaneous smile to your face. Get used to it, because the smile just gets bigger as you engage launch control, put the bike in gear, hold the throttle wide open, and release the clutch. The front wheel lifts just enough to make you feel like a hero as you accelerate off the line, and if you’re not smiling after that, then you need your pulse checked. The seven-inch HD TFT screen walks you through the steps of this very cool and fun launch-control procedure.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce handlebar controls

Shifting up and down through the gears with the perfectly tuned quickshifter, this bike is a blast to ride on the road. While you’d think that the big 21-inch wheel out front might have negative effects on the handling, the counter-rotating crankshaft in the torquey new MV motor almost eliminates the gyroscopic force of the front wheel, and you soon realize that you can ride hard into turns while trail braking with the Brembo Stylema front brakes. The bike stays planted and stable all the way to the exit of the turn. The brakes are as smooth and consistent as you would expect from these top-quality components, and the advanced electronics with a six-axis IMU helps to keep everything under control whether braking in a straight line or while leaned over in a turn. Accelerating out of the corners and shifting up through the gears with the traction control set to your liking, a little slide for me, the motor barks out a beautiful symphony of sound, and your smile starts to hurt because it won’t go away.

Pushing this bike hard through the twisties is thrilling, but the great thing about this new MV motor is that you don’t have to ride it like a crazed lunatic to enjoy it truly. Eighty-five percent of the torque is available at just 3000 rpm, and you have four torque control maps to choose from. This makes it a perfect third-gear bike, meaning that you can literally put the bike in third gear, ride all day, never shift, and it’ll never complain. But why would you? With enough traction control settings and ride modes to satisfy a NASA astronaut, this bike can cater to whatever kind of riding suits your style or the mood of the moment.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce motor

There are a total of eight on-the-fly traction control settings for the standard Bridgestone Battlax A41 street tires, which are nested on gorgeous Excel Takasago tubeless rims laced to billet CNC hubs. In addition, there are effectively another eight TC settings for the homologated Bridgestone AX41 knobby tires. This bike is, again, very similar to a KTM 890 in that you can continuously adjust the TC up or down via the backlit switch controls with your left hand. The Enduro Veloce features two engine brake settings and four ride modes—Touring, Urban, Off-Road, and Custom All-Terrain. This last one—a fully customizable mode that stays put and allows for TC and ABS to be fully disabled even after you switch the bike off and back on again—makes me want to kiss the Italian engineer that flipped the bird to the lawyers and left the owner to decide how and when he or she wants the electronics to change. Cornering ABS with Rear Wheel Lift Mitigation (RLM), means that you can brake hard into corners and the rear end remains stable and under control. And yes, you read that right, the electronics on this bike are adaptable to the types of tires you’re running. Very cool.

The seven-inch TFT HD display is fully customizable and can display whatever and however you like it. In addition to the typical Bluetooth connectivity, the EV also has Wi-Fi connectivity (for future firmware updates from MV) and includes programmable mapping by way of the MV Ride app. Your desired settings can be entered into the app while you’re planning the route sitting on your sofa, or wherever you may be, and then, when you’re ready to ride, the app downloads your desired settings to the bike’s computer. You can also share these settings with other Enduro Veloce riders. Of course, the app also provides turn-by-turn routing and phone and music controls, among other convenient features.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce off-roading

I’m 5′9″, and while sitting on the adjustable 33.46- to 34.25-inch seat, my feet were firmly on the ground with the seat in the low position. Underway, the wind protection behind the aerodynamically tested fairing and windscreen provided a nice pocket from the wind, and I didn’t experience any helmet buffeting at all, even as speeds crept to a little over 90 mph during the press intro. While seated, you do feel as though you’re sitting in the bike rather than on it, but in saying that, it doesn’t feel top-heavy at all—even when the 5.28-gallon fuel tank is full. As I moved from sitting to standing, the feel was natural, and the position of the bars, controls, and footpegs was comfortable. The bike is equipped with cruise control that can be deactivated by rolling the throttle forward, which MV is promoting as a new and unique safety feature, although I prefer a light tap on the brakes just because that’s what I’m used to, but some riders might like the roll-off feature. You can still squeeze the clutch or tap the brakes to disengage the CC, whichever you prefer.

2024 MV Agusta Enduro Veloce trail riding

Every new Enduro Veloce is hand-built at the MV factory in Varese, Italy, and is ridden and tested by an associate prior to delivery. The new motor is incredible, but time will tell if it’s reliable. The rest of the bike is assembled with the highest-quality components available, and MV is willing to stand behind the package with a four-year unlimited mileage warranty. New dealer locations are being added, and you’re likely to see this new model, along with other MV Agusta models, at a KTM dealer near you very soon. The executives at the press intro assured us that MV Agusta will be the premium brand for Pierer Mobility AG and customers of the brand can expect to be treated as such. The manufacturing and management for MV will remain in Italy, and all bikes will continue to be hand-built and tested. Because of that, production numbers will be somewhat limited, when compared to other brands, and you certainly won’t see an Enduro Veloce on every street corner. The timing of the press intro seemed a bit odd to us after we were told that the bike is not scheduled for arrival in the USA until the fall of this year, but even with that late arrival, those units will be designated as 2024-year models.

So, is it worth the wait? Well, if I had deep pockets and were looking for a unique, super fun-to-ride new motorcycle, I’d throw down $23k for this bike—because for those who are lucky enough to get one, la dolce vita is just one launch control sequence away. CN

01. Drivetrain

enduro travel motorcycle

This fully electric, battery-powered air-cooled permanent magnet motor features an extremely compact and slim design that perfectly matches the KTM SX-E 5's smaller chassis. It's also dust and waterproof which makes it wear and maintenance-free, while the integrated control unit (ECU) guarantees a direct, but very controllable power delivery.

02. Chassis

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM SX-E 5 has a modern frame design that is made of lightweight, high-strength Chromoly steel profiles and combines maximum longitudinal stiffness with optimum torsional rigidity. The subframe is made of lightweight, fiber-glass reinforced extruded plastic elements, which can be mounted in two positions for different seat heights. This means that the KTM SX-E 5 can 'grow' with your young racer.

enduro travel motorcycle

Like the full-size KTM Factory racers, the 2024 KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with lightweight, black anodized, aluminum rims which provide the highest strength and durability for any eventuality. These are wrapped in MAXXIS MX-ST tires, to provide unmatched traction on any surface.

enduro travel motorcycle

Front suspension

The KTM SX-E 5 boasts a fully adjustable, upside-down WP XACT air fork with a 35 mm tube diameter and 205 mm of travel. This ensures outstanding comfort, damping characteristics, and directional stability. Another main benefit for junior riders is that the air spring fitted in the left fork leg can be adjusted perfectly to the rider's weight using a simple air pump.

enduro travel motorcycle

Rear suspension

The high-quality WP XACT shock absorber is linked directly to the cast swingarm, providing excellent damping performance. It is fully adjustable, meaning you can set the damping perfectly to suit the rider's preference and track conditions. The shock absorber allows for 185 mm of rear-wheel travel.

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with front and rear hydraulic brakes by FORMULA, combined with lightweight wave discs that are easy to control even for the youngest riders, helping to build thier confidence, and taching them correct brake control.

03. Ergonomics & comfort

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM SX-E 5 uses high-quality tapered NEKEN handlebars, made of aluminum alloy ensuring top stability and safety. Its diameter tapers from 28 mm in the central area, to 22 mm in the bends, to 18 mm in the handhold area. This allows for a thinner lock-on ODI grip to be mounted on the left side while the right side features a throttle assembly with a vulcanized ODI grip, specifically developed for the electronic drive. An additional crash pad on the handlebar brace protects the rider from rough contact.

enduro travel motorcycle

Seat height

The seat height on the KTM SX-E 5 can be adjusted to multiple levels. The standard model comes with a seat height of 665 mm, which can easily be reduced to 615 mm in two easy steps by lowering the bodywork and seat and mounting the rear shock in an alternative position. The front fork can also be lowered in the triple clamps. Additionally, by using a Suspension Lowering Kit from the KTM PowerParts catalog, the suspension can be further lowered for a minimum seat height of only 560 mm which accommodates the smallest riders of four years old or even younger.

04. Bodyworks & Graphics

enduro travel motorcycle

The 2024 KTM SX-E 5 features the latest in-mold graphics, with a bold orange and blue design that perfectly sets off the factory-look orange frame, orange seat and and race-sharpened bodywork.

05. Software & Electronics

enduro travel motorcycle

A multifunctional instrument display is located between the steering head and seat. Here, the user can select between the six different ride modes. Each mode offers different power characteristics suited for pure beginners all the way up to experienced racers. The instrument also displays the remaining charge of the battery.

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with 84 modern lithium-ion cells in a robust die-cast aluminum casing that is mounted just above the electric motor. This means the stored energy is 907 Wh, which is enough for more than two hours of riding for a beginner and approximately 25 min full-throttle racing, depending on conditions and terrain. The integrated battery management system (BMS) ensures the safety and longevity of the battery pack.

enduro travel motorcycle

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with a rollover sensor that cuts off the power in the event of a fall, while a wrist lanyard cut-off key stops the motor in the event of an uncontrollable riding scenario. For further safety measures, the ride modes can be locked and saved with a dongle located below the seat. This prevents younger, less experienced riders from changing to more powerful ride modes on their own.

Can Manuel Lettenbichler Dominate the 2024 Hard Enduro Series?

M anuel Lettenbichler, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star, is gearing up for the 2024 FIM Hard Enduro World Championship with high expectations following a flawless 2023 season where he won every round. At 26 years old, Lettenbichler is prepared to defend his title using his preferred KTM 300 EXC. His preparation included competing in the FIM SuperEnduro World Championship, where he finished third overall, demonstrating his adaptability and resilience across various racing formats.

Winter Preparation and Preseason Highlights

Throughout the winter, Lettenbichler engaged in rigorous training and extensive testing of his motorcycle to ensure he is in peak condition. His offseason efforts included participating in various racing disciplines, such as enduro, hard enduro, and motocross, to enhance his versatility as a rider. This comprehensive approach to training is aimed at maintaining his top form as he faces the upcoming seven-round championship.

A Look at the 2024 Championship Circuit

The 2024 season will commence at the Valleys Hard Enduro in South Wales from May 10-12. It will feature seven rounds, including prestigious events like the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo and the Red Bull Romaniacs. New additions to this year’s circuit include the Sea to Sky in Turkey and the Hixpania Hard Enduro in Spain, promising a diverse and challenging series for all competitors. The championship will conclude in October in Spain, wrapping up a season that promises to be as exhilarating as the last.

Lettenbichler's Perspective on the Upcoming Season

"I can’t wait to get the 2024 Hard Enduro season underway! I don’t even know what to say about last year, I went into the season with no expectations, but then after winning the first few rounds, I realized I had a shot at doing something unique. I had a perfect season, and to make history in our sport is so cool! There are a lot of different things we’ve done to get race ready during preseason. I have focused on my fitness a lot, but we also had a lot of bike testing to do too. I tried to ride as many different disciplines as possible like enduro, hard enduro and motocross, so I’m prepared for everything this season. Going into this year, we have so much more experience with this bike and which settings work best for each race. Of course, I want to replicate what I did last year, but we are just going to start the season and see how it goes. I can’t wait to get the championship underway in Wales!"

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

Husqvarna Motorcycles expands Motocross line-up for 2025

All-new and exciting tc 150 and tc 300 2-stroke machines added to the range.

Husqvarna Motorcycles sets a new and higher standard for pure motocross performance in 2025 with a strengthened line-up of seven machines for the new model year. Multiple technical updates include revised frames, engine mounts, bodywork, and suspension settings, which all combine to create an elevated riding experience with two exciting, new 2-stroke models added to the range – the TC 150 and TC 300.

Based upon the class-leading TC 125, the new TC 150 bridges the gap between the TC 125 and the TC 250. Offering improved overall power and a considerable boost to the torque, the TC 150 is the perfect machine for racers looking to gain an advantage when competing against 250 cc 4-stroke machines. Assembled with race-tested components throughout and providing all riders with confidence-inspiring handling, the TC 150 certainly strengthens the 2-stroke line-up available from Husqvarna Motorcycles.

The same philosophy applies to the new TC 300. Using the proven foundations of the TC 250, the 300 cc model is capable of racing with 450 cc 4-strokes thanks to its versatile engine that delivers exceptional torque and peak performance. Undoubtedly, the TC 300 sets a new benchmark for motocross machinery, delivering the ultimate combination of unsurpassed power and rideability within a lightweight construction.

The FC 250 and FC 350 continue to be powered by state-of-the-art, DOHC engines that are designed to be lightweight and play a vital role in elevating overall handling. Together with the FC 450 – the flagship motocross machine manufactured by Husqvarna Motorcycles – all 4-stroke models feature the latest technology and electronic rider aids for superior on track performance.

The latest generation frame ensures all seven models offer exceptional handling in 2025. With material reduced around the upper shock mount and at the front of the chassis, the revisions were introduced to enhance flex characteristics, reduce weight, and improve cornering without compromising straight-line stability. Additionally, and exclusive to the three 4-stroke machines, new engine mounts aid the agility of each motorcycle.

Further chassis revisions include new suspension settings, linkage seals, and a smaller diameter linkage bolt to save weight while redesigned tank shrouds allow easier access to the adjusters on the WP shock. The seat height is 5 mm higher and wider at the lowest point for easier movement on the motorcycle while new, Swedish-inspired graphics create a distinctive look.

All models are expertly crafted with the latest technology and rider aids, in addition to featuring an extensive list of premium aftermarket components to ensure each machine delivers best-in-class rideability. New for 2025 are Dunlop’s latest MX34 tyres, which provide improved acceleration and cornering, while ProTaper handlebars, ODI grips, and Brembo clutch and brake systems are retained for their proven performance and durability.

Technical highlights:

  • Revised chassis for enhanced flex and cornering agility
  • New linkage seals and linkage bolt for smoother shock performance and weight savings
  • New Dunlop Geomax MX34 tyres for exceptional grip on all surfaces
  • New engine mounts on FC models further improve chassis flex
  • New WP suspension settings adapted to the revised chassis
  • Revised radiator shrouds finished with new graphics
  • Revised swingarm improves durability of the chain slider
  • Slightly higher and wider seat with a high-grip cover for maximum control and manoeuvrability
  • Throttle body fuel injection on 2-stroke engines ensures class-leading power and rideability
  • FC 250 and FC 350 DOHC engines deliver class-leading torque and peak power
  • Multifunctional Map Select Switch offers two engine maps and houses the Quickshifter, Traction, and Launch Control buttons on all 4-stroke models
  • Aluminium-polyamide hybrid subframe construction provides specifically calculated rigidity and advanced durability
  • WP XACT 48 mm front forks with AER technology offer progressive end-of-stroke damping
  • WP XACT rear shock design with CFD-optimised main piston and tool-free adjusters
  • High-performance Brembo hydraulic clutch system
  • Premium-quality ProTaper handlebars and ODI grips
  • Electric starter on all models powered by a lightweight Li-Ion 2.0 Ah battery

A competition-focused range of Technical Accessories accompanies the launch of the 2025 motocross machines with the headlining component the Connectivity Unit Offroad. Once installed and paired with the free-to-download Ride Husqvarna Motorcycles app, riders can create and save multiple engine maps and suspension set-ups to suit a variety of racing surfaces and conditions.

Providing comfort, Swedish-inspired styling, and safety for all riders, the Apparel collection ensures maximum protection throughout every race. The complete range includes riding gear and protective wear with every product designed in line with the 2025 line-up of motocross models available from Husqvarna Motorcycles.

The 2025 motocross range is now available at authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealers
