Primary Care

Pain management, palliative care.

At Mobile Physician Services, our customized care teams provide patients with both comfort and familiarity as they work with a dedicated primary care provider and care coordinator to improve their health. Our physicians and staff take a proactive approach to preventive care, chronic disease management, and chronic illness support right where you live.

Each home visit includes an in-depth examination and individualized treatment plan, which is monitored and adjusted through routine follow-up visits. The primary care provider will deliver your ongoing care and will recommend to you specialty services as needed.

  • Annual Wellness visits : This wellness visit allows your primary care provider to create or update your personalized prevention plan. This visit includes a review of your medical and social history related to your health and may include counseling about preventive services. This plan may help you to prevent or reduce the chances of future illness based on your current health and risk factors.
  • New Illness Exams : When a new symptom or ailment arises, call us. Early indications of not feeling well could be a clue that you may be getting sick. A symptom in one part of the body may also be a sign of a problem in another part of the body. Moreover, unrelated symptoms that might seem minor on their own, could be warning signs of a more serious medical disease or condition. The new illness exam can be very brief or more detailed depending on your concerns and the provider’s findings.
  • Follow-up Care: Involves a regular medical checkup, which may include a physical exam and laboratory testing. Follow-up care checks are a proactive way of assessing the potential for and preventing health problems from returning after treatment of a disease has ended or an illness has seemingly passed.
  • Referral for Specialty Care : Referrals are the link between primary and specialty care. The referral coordination includes the documentation of patient care activities, the transfer of information, the inter-provider communication itself, and the integration of care services to the patient. Mobile Physician Services is a multi-specialty practice so many of these specialty referral services can be made seamlessly with little inconvenience or disruption to the patient and caregivers regular routines.
  • Medication Management: Medication management is a treatment structure that ensures our patients are receiving optimal therapeutic results from their prescription medications, both in the short and long term. Our team’s goal is to mitigate medication noncompliance and monitor all prescriptions treatments so that drug interactions complement one another for the most optimal outcome for our patients.

The provider may be a physician, advanced practice nurse or a physician assistant. A dedicated care coordinator will also be assigned for each patient to help arrange comprehensive services and assist patients and their caregivers.

  • Online Patient Portal: You and your designated caregiver, if you choose, will be able to connect with your provider through a convenient, safe and secure environment which allows access to your health records and a way to communicate with our staff in a timely manner.
  • Telephone Assistance : On call providers are available 24/7 weekdays and weekends.

Our psychiatry team specializes in the diagnosis and management of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They carefully evaluate each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan to improve the patient’s overall mental and physical well-being.

  • Depression : Depression is a common and often serious medical illness that negatively affects how you may feel, the way you may think, and how you may act. Depression can cause feelings of sadness, despair and hopelessness, which may lead to a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.
  • Anxiety : Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday common situations. The worry or anxiety could make you feel fatigued, irritable, and interfere with your regular sleep habits.
  • Dementia : An overall term that is used to describes a collection of symptoms related to an individual’s decline in memory or other thinking skills. It may be severe enough to diminish a person’s ability to perform everyday common activities. The effects of dementia can negatively influence your memory, thinking and social abilities.
  • Phobias : A phobia is when you experience excessive panicking or an irrational fear reaction to a situation. If you have a phobia, you may experience a deep sense of dread or fright when you encounter the source of your fear. The fear may be a certain place, situation, object, animal or even another person.
  • Behavioral disorders : Attention deficit, hyperactivity, bipolar, learning, defiant or conduct disorders are all examples of complaints that may have a detrimental impact on a person’s interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.

Our team can provide behavioral counselling and medical therapy, when appropriate, to help a patient feel better about themselves and to assist them with better coping and managing their condition.

Our wound care specialists have been trained in the attention and treatment of all types of acute and chronic wounds. They have skill and experience in wound debridement and wound care procedures – managing chronic, non-healing wounds and infections, with a demonstrated care that fosters healing… right in the patient’s own home.

We specialize in serving homebound patients who may also be bed-bound or have difficulty in walking or moving around. As a result, immobility compression sores develop at pressure points on the body when the weight of an immobilized individual rests continuously on a firm surface, such as a mattress or wheel chair. Often these same patients are on oxygen or have high-risk medical conditions which makes it an even more challenging and stressful effort for them to travel to a doctor’s office for an appointment. Thus, the necessity for in home care and treatment.

Wounds that benefit from specialized wound care techniques include:

  • Diabetic foot wounds and ulcers
  • Post-surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds caused by injury
  • Arterial and vein stasis caused by lack of circulation
  • Immobility pressure sores. (Bed sores from stillness)

We work closely with home health agencies to provide ongoing care and monitoring of patient’s wounds.

Podiatry

We know it’s not always easy to leave home to get the care you need for your eyes. Our optometrists bring state-of-the-art diagnostic eye equipment and technology to your home – making it much easier for you to get the vision care you need.

During a visit, your doctor will exam each eye for signs of serious issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and detached retinas, among other conditions.

Receiving regular eye exams regardless of the state of your vision can help detect serious eye problems at their earliest stages ─ when they are most treatable. During an eye exam, your doctor will observe and evaluate the health and condition of the blood vessels in your retina, which can be good indicators of the health of your blood vessels throughout the rest of your body.

  • Comprehensive eye exams : This exam goes beyond a simple vision screening. A comprehensive eye exam includes a host of tests in order to do a complete evaluation of the health of your eyes and your vision.
  • Annual retina exams : A retinal exam allows your doctor to evaluate the back of your eye, including the retina, the optic disk and the underlying layer of blood vessels that supply the retina.
  • Eyeglass fittings : A prescription works best when your eyeglasses are properly fitted. Improper fitting may cause pinching, distorted vision, headaches, and even dizziness. Our doctors will make sure your prescription lenses and frames are working together for you.
  • Diabetic eye exams : Diabetes does not have to lead to vision loss. Taking an active role in managing your diabetes can go a long way in curbing later complications. Regular eye exams, good management of your blood sugar and blood pressure, along with early intervention for vision problems can help prevent vision loss caused by diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye.
  • Refractions: This test is given as part of your routine eye examination. It is often referred to as a vision test. This test assists your eye doctor in measuring you for the exact lens prescription you will need.
  • Eye injuries: Eye trauma could be the result of a sudden blow to the eye. It may cause the eye to suddenly compress and retract which could cause damage to your eye and the surrounding tissue. Even if the injury may seem minor, all eye injuries should be furthered examined by a doctor for possible more serious and underlying injuries.
  • Eye infections: The most common eye infection is conjunctivitis, also known as pink-eye. An eye infection can happen in almost any part of your eye, including your eye lid, cornea and optic nerve. Symptoms of eye infections may include redness, itching, swelling, discharge, pain, or problems with vision. Always consult with your doctor before treating, as recommended actions are contingent on the cause of the infection.
  • Low-vision exams: A low vision exam is different from a normal eye exam. This functional-vision assessment determines how specific visual impairments affects your ability to perform everyday activities. The exam’s results assist your doctor in prescribing management tools and medications to better enhance and manage your remaining vision.

Palliative care is an approach to the holistic care of patients, including family and caregivers, to improve the quality of their lives after the diagnosis of a chronic debilitating disease or life-limiting illness that may cause a host of complaints.

Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and continue to be offered while the patient is continuing active treatment through different phases of their life limiting condition. Palliative care is for any patient with a chronic illness who is experiencing a decreased quality of life because of symptoms related to their illness or treatment, like renal dialysis, oxygen therapy or chemotherapy. The care is provided by a specially-trained team of doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other specialists who work together to provide an extra layer of support to the patient and their caregivers.

Palliative care can help in symptom control including not only pain, but nausea, weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue and weight loss at any time during their diseases, not only at the end of life.

I was desperate to find a podiatrist to care for my elderly home-bound mother and was fortunate enough to locate Anywhere Foot and Ankle Care online. The staff at Anywhere Foot and Ankle Care were caring, thoughtful and professional. Registration was easy and I was able to schedule and appointment that fit our schedule. Dr. Demian was exceptional at accommodating my mother’s severe hearing loss and explained everything he was doing as he went through her treatment. He provided excellent after care instructions and made suggestions for other services that may help my mom. My mom was eternally grateful and we couldn’t be happier with the services she was provided.

I couldn’t be more grateful for his assistance in helping make my mom feel comfortable while providing mobile services at her home. Thank goodness that some doctors still do house calls! How to Safely Get Started With Home Visit Podiatry Services

December 30, 2022.

When I started my private practice in 2018, I had no interest in leaving the office. The most efficient way to generate revenue for podiatry was staying in the office. All the staff, equipment, protocols, expenses and even insurance reimbursements were tied into the office.

I had kept getting calls requesting home visits because patients were bed bound or just didn’t want to leave their home. Many podiatrists in my area don’t offer palliative foot care at all, so I had the opportunity to fill this need. Plus, I had opted out of insurance and became a Direct Care practice, which meant I had the freedom to offer services without insurance regulations, including home visits.

There was no longer a need to file for a new location of service with insurance or wait on an approval for reimbursement. I would just inform the patient of my fees, show up and get paid immediately. The first time I did a home visit and got paid what I wanted without friction, it felt unusually liberating. I felt incredibly valued, something that had been missing under the insurance regime.

In one visit, I saw a patient who was on hospice care but you wouldn’t know it from meeting this gentleman. He was vibrant, jolly, and easy to chat with. He needed foot care for his sensitive feet and I was able to provide this service. He lived just minutes from my office so it was just a stop on the way home. A few weeks later his wife reached out to me asking about changes in his feet. I was able to do a video consultation immediately, coordinate care with his hospice team and prescribed antibiotics for the new infection he had developed.

And that was it. A straightforward evaluation and a quick resolution to a new problem, all in the comfort of their home. The family was grateful and I was deeply satisfied at how easy it was to deliver medical care to someone who would otherwise have difficulties leaving their home to see the doctor.

When I was contracted with insurance companies, doing home visits was never on the radar. I was way too busy in the office to consider it and I was bombarded with all the ever changing rules, insulted by the low reimbursement rates, or risking no payment at all that it didn’t make sense to offer it. Plus, I didn’t really know what it would be like to visit a person’s home as a doctor, so the unknown made me a little fearful. But now I have a protocol to mitigate those fears and I want to be able to share that with other Direct Care doctors who might be interested in offering home visits. This is really old school medicine, and just like vintage goods, should come back into vogue to rekindle the patient-physician relationship.

How to safely get started with home visit services

  • Offer an initial consultation by video so you can learn about what their needs are. You can learn quite a bit through video that you might miss on a phone call. Since everyone has a smartphone these days, the barrier to access is much lower. This initial assessment also gives you insight to their home setting and to the tools you might need to bring to the visit.
  • Map out their address to see if it is a feasible drive that doesn’t disrupt your work flow too much. If it is out of range, then it’s ok to decline home visits. There will be more opportunities to help.
  • As a safety feature, your iPhone has a Share My Location button that you can turn on and let a trusted person know you’re on the road and when to expect you back. That way you’re accounted for.
  • Consider digital intake forms and have a credit card on file before the visit so that you have less paperwork to deal with and focus on the patient.
  • Before you leave, clean up after yourself, like used gloves and any trash so it’s not left behind. After all, you’re still a guest in someone’s home.
  • If you love it and want to expand home visit, give patients and their family a meaningful visit leaving cards and asking for referrals.

Of course, include your malpractice carrier in the conversation about doing home visits to ensure your liability coverage. With  advances in technology, and the physicians’ deep desire to disconnect from corporate medicine and reconnect with patients, home visits are an option to expand our services to those who need it most.

People seek podiatric help for a plethora of reasons. These often relate to common foot and ankle issues ranging from mild annoyances to severe conditions. Here are some of the most common reasons why people visit a podiatrist:

  • Bunions:  These are painful bumps that develop on the joint at the base of your big toe. Bunions can become extremely uncomfortable and might affect your ability to walk.
  • Corns and Calluses : These are areas of thickened skin that develop to protect sensitive skin areas, often due to friction or pressure.
  • Toenail Problems : This could be an ingrown toenail (the nail grows into the skin, causing pain), fungal infections, or even toenail injuries.
  • Plantar Fasciitis : This condition is characterized by heel pain, often severe and most noticeable with the day's first steps.
  • Foot and Ankle Injuries : This includes sprains, fractures, or injuries caused by accidents or sports.
  • Foot Deformities : Conditions such as flat feet or high arches, which can cause discomfort and gait issues, may require the attention of a podiatrist.
  • Diabetic Foot Care : Individuals with diabetes need special foot care due to their increased risk of foot sores and ulcers. Regular podiatric check-ups are crucial for preventive care.
  • Heel Spurs : These are calcium deposits that cause a bony protrusion on the underside of the heel bone, often causing heel pain.
  • Arthritis : This inflammation of one or more of your joints can heavily affect the foot and ankle area, leading to pain and stiffness.
  • Athlete's Foot : A fungal infection that can lead to itchy, flaking skin, especially between the toes.

Athletes, in particular, often visit podiatrists for sports-related injuries, gait analysis, and preventive care.

How Podiatry Can Help

Regardless of the root cause of the foot or ankle issue, podiatry is a field dedicated to addressing these concerns. Podiatrists can provide various treatments to help alleviate discomfort, enhance mobility, and prevent future foot and ankle issues. Here's how they can assist:

  • Medication Prescriptions : Podiatrists can prescribe the necessary medicines to treat infections, manage pain, or tackle inflammation.
  • Physical Therapy : They can recommend specific exercises or physical therapy regimens to improve strength, flexibility, and overall foot health.
  • Orthotics : Custom-made shoe inserts can be provided to correct foot deformities, provide support, and alleviate discomfort.
  • Surgery : In cases of severe foot and ankle conditions, podiatrists can perform surgical procedures.
  • Preventive Care : This includes advice on proper footwear, hygiene, and self-care practices to prevent foot and ankle issues.

With the help of a podiatrist, like those at  Modern Foot & Ankle , you can take a step in the right direction towards better foot health.

What Expect During Your First Podiatry Visit

What Expect During Your First Podiatry Visit

1. The Initial Examination

The initial examination is comprehensive. Your podiatrist will examine your feet, may ask you to walk or stand, and might perform additional diagnostic tests. They'll also review your health history and discuss your symptoms.

2. Medical History Checks

One of the first things you can expect during your initial podiatry visit is a comprehensive medical history review. This check isn't limited to foot-related issues; it spans your overall health. The podiatrist will ask about any existing medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, as these can significantly impact your foot health. They'll also ask about any previous surgeries, injuries, and allergies.

In addition, the podiatrist will want to know the specifics of the foot, ankle, or lower limb issues you've been experiencing. This could include symptoms, duration, severity, and any self-care treatments you've attempted. It's beneficial to prepare for this by recalling or noting down this information before your visit.

3. Physical Examination

The podiatrist will conduct a thorough physical examination following the medical history check. This is a crucial part of the visit as it allows the podiatrist to visualize and assess the issues you've described.

During this examination, the podiatrist will look at the overall structure of your feet, checking for abnormalities like bunions, hammertoes, or arch problems. They may ask you to walk or perform specific movements to evaluate your gait and foot mechanics. The skin and toenails will also be checked for any signs of problems such as fungal infections, warts, or corns.

4. Further Diagnosis

Depending on the results of your physical examination, the podiatrist may require further tests to establish a conclusive diagnosis. These tests can range from imaging studies like X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds, to blood tests or nerve conduction studies.

For example, if the podiatrist suspects a fracture or bone spur, they might order an X-ray. If a soft tissue problem is suspected, an ultrasound or MRI might be more appropriate.

5. Treatment Plan

Once a diagnosis has been made, the podiatrist will formulate a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This plan could encompass various treatment modalities, including medications, custom orthotics, physical therapy , lifestyle changes like weight management or footwear modifications, and in some cases, surgical intervention.

Post-Visit Follow-Ups and Care

Before your first podiatry visit, prepare a list of your current medications, known allergies, and a brief overview of your medical history. This will help your podiatrist create the most effective treatment plan for you.

Post-Visit Follow-Ups and Care

1. understanding your treatment plan .

After your first podiatry visit, it's crucial to fully understand your treatment options. If you were prescribed medication, know the dosage, frequency, and potential side effects. If you were given exercises or physical therapy, be clear on how to perform these safely at home. Any questions or uncertainties should be clarified with your podiatrist before leaving the office or during follow-up communications.

2. The Importance of Follow-up Visits

Your first podiatry visit is only the beginning of your foot health journey. Depending on your diagnosis, you may need to return for follow-up visits. These initial appointments allow your podiatrist to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment plan if necessary, and manage any possible complications.

3. Home Care and Prevention

Between visits, taking good care of your feet at home is important. Your podiatrist may advise on foot hygiene, shoe choices, and general foot care based on your specific condition. Following these guidelines will be crucial to your recovery and ongoing thorough foot examination.

4. Staying Active and Healthy

Where appropriate, maintaining an active lifestyle is beneficial for foot health. Regular exercise can improve poor circulation, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the muscles supporting your feet. However, make sure to follow your podiatrist's guidelines regarding activities and exercise, particularly if you're recovering from a foot injury.

Visiting a podiatrist for the first time may seem daunting, but it needn't be. Being informed and prepared can help you make the most of your visit. Remember, the primary aim is to help you attain and maintain healthy feet, a crucial component of overall well-being. Trust in the professionals, contact or book an initial appointment at  Modern Foot & Ankle , who can provide comprehensive care and guide you towards foot health.

Common Questions

1. What can I expect at a podiatry appointment?

At a podiatry appointment, you can expect to discuss your medical history, undergo a comprehensive physical examination of your feet and lower limbs, and potentially have further diagnostic tests. The podiatrist will then create a tailored treatment plan based on your specific needs.

2. What shoes to wear to podiatrist?

It's best to wear shoes that you commonly use, as they can provide valuable information about your foot health and walking patterns. If you have specific concerns about a particular pair of shoes, bring them along to discuss with your podiatrist.

3. When should you start seeing a podiatrist?

You should consider seeing a podiatrist if you experience persistent foot pain, have a foot injury, or notice changes in the appearance of your feet or nails. Regular check-ups can also be beneficial for people with diabetes or other conditions that affect the feet.

4. What do I need to know before seeing a podiatrist?

Before seeing a podiatrist, it's helpful to have a list of your current medications, any known allergies, and a brief overview of your medical history. Be prepared to discuss any specific foot concerns or symptoms you've been experiencing.

5. What should I wear to a podiatry appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your feet and lower limbs. If you're having issues with a specific pair of shoes, bring them along. It's also a good idea to bring any orthotics or aids you regularly use.

6. What is the most common problem treated by a podiatrist?

Podiatrists treat a wide range of foot and lower limb problems. However, some of the most common issues include bunions, ingrown toenails, heel pain, and complications related to diabetes and arthritis.

How to help treat your bunions at home, according to podiatrists

Bunions can impact daily activities, but experts say that with at-home treatments, symptoms, including pain and inflammation, can decrease.

You may notice a small bump on the inside of your foot that doesn’t seem to go away no matter all the home remedies and creams you try — well, that’s because it’s a bunion. Bunions are a common hereditary deformity that causes bones in your foot to shift around and stick out, giving it a prominent, rounded appearance, according to Dr. Anne Sharkey , a board-certified podiatrist. Living with bunions can affect daily life, but you can manage and minimize symptoms with at-home treatments. To help you find the right option, we talked to podiatrists about all the options on the market and gathered their recommendations and highly rated options that align with their guidance.

SKIP AHEAD What are bunions | Do bunions hurt? | The best bunion treatments | How to shop for bunion treatments

What are bunions

A bunion is a three-dimensional deformity caused by an unstable foot joint. Because of this, the bones in the front of the foot move out of place, and the big toe is pulled toward the smaller toes. According to Sharkey, this pulling causes the bone at the base of the big toe joint to become prominent and stick out. Sharkey says that in some more severe bunions, you may even see the second toe crossing over or under the big toe.

Do bunions hurt?

Pain from a bunion can be mild, moderate or severe, which can make daily tasks like wearing “normal” shoes difficult, according to board-certified podiatrist Dr. Alexandra Spangler . The big toe drifting laterally can also put pressure on the second toe, which can be a source of pain, she says—more on how bunions affect day-to-day life is below.

Selected. Our top picks

How we picked the best bunion treatments

Our podiatrists say that while over-the-counter options can’t fully rid bunions, they can alleviate pain and offer temporary relief.

  • Function : There are many options to help manage your bunions, including bunion correctors, toe spacers, gels, padding, and even wide-toe box shoes. Each of these serves its own function, such as slowing the progression of bunion growth and reducing inflammation and pain. There is more on the different options below.
  • Price : Since many treatments are available on the market right now, they will all vary across different price points depending on the route you choose. Our list has options as low as $13 and as high as $145.

The best bunion treatments in 2024.

Our experts recommend the following treatments to help reduce pain and manage symptoms of bunions.

Caretras Bunion Corrector

Caretras Bunion Corrector

  • Easy to wash
  • Fits US 5-11 foot sizes

If you’re looking to help temporarily realign your bunion, consider using this corrector recommended by Sharkey. It helps relieve discomfort, pressure, and inflammation by constantly applying gentle pressure when on. For the best relief and effectiveness, wear the corrector for 20 minutes each day and gradually increase your usage until you can comfortably wear it for two to three hours. According to the brand, you can wear it while walking or sleeping since the breathable and adjustable splint has a non-slip design.

Zentoes Gel Toe Separators

Zentoes Gel Toe Separators

  • Comes in a pack of four
  • Conforms to your toes
  • May require gentle handling

Sharkey recommends these toe separators because the silicone loop helps ease the pressure of the bunion by straightening the big toe. Reviewers say these separators are extremely comfortable; they forget they’re wearing them and have even used them for post-bunion surgery recovery.

Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel

Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel

  • Easy to apply
  • Works on other joints
  • Has a scent
  • Doesn’t absorb quickly
  • Can be toxic to pets if eaten

Although this product is formulated to help topically combat arthritis, this is great for bunion relief, according to Sharkey. This non-greasy cream-gel hybrid can help reduce joint pain and improve mobility and inflammation with the help of ingredients like diclofenac sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), according to the brand. For significant results, apply the gel four times a day to your joints, according to Voltaren.

Hoka Clifton 9

Hoka Clifton 9

  • Wide toe box
  • Flexible material
  • Great for walking and running
  • Thicker soles

Hoka makes some of our favorite running shoes . This option has a wide toe box, allowing enough room for your feet without causing unnecessary rubbing on your bunion, which can worsen the issue. It’s also made with breathable mesh, an important aspect when shoe shopping since it’s not as tight on the bunion, according to our experts.

Nike Motiva

Nike Motiva Walking Shoe

Nike Motiva Walking Shoe

  • Arch support
  • Absorbs shock
  • Requires breaking in

This 2024 NBC Select Wellness Award winner for best walking shoe is great for daily activities and exercise and has a wide toe box. “These are the most comfortable walking shoes I’ve tried and they make me feel like I’m walking on clouds,” says Rebecca Rodriguez , NBC Select editorial projects manager who has bunions and hasn’t experienced discomfort or tightness while wearing them.

How to shop for bunion treatments.

While you can’t rid yourself of your bunions at home, great over-the-counter options can help those with mild symptoms. The effectiveness of these treatments depends on each individual’s bunion deformity, biomechanics, lifestyle, and more, but according to Sharkey, they are always worth a try.

Bunion correctors

According to Spangler, bunion correctors are devices that you wear over the bunion or big toe joint to try to reduce the deformity over time. While they can hold your toe in proper alignment while on your foot, they cannot correct the underlying cause of your bunion, so as soon as you remove it, the bunion will shift back out of alignment, says Sharkey.

However, while they may not offer actual correction, they may offer some temporary relief, according to Spangler. “In the end, I tell my patients, if it makes their foot more comfortable, feel free to use it but use it knowing that it is symptom management and not correction of the bunion,” says Sharkey.

Toe spacers

Sharkey says these can be quite helpful for symptom management. This is because they are meant to alleviate pressure caused by the bunion deformity. “Most commonly, I find that patients are using spacers between the big toe and the second toe to reduce pressure occurring at this location,” she says.

Gel cushioning and pads

Gel cushioning helps alleviate pressure at the inside of the big toe joint (over the bunion bump) to help with discomfort from shoe rubbing, according to Sharkey. While this may help with common symptoms for some, others may find little to no relief because the added layer over the bunion can make your shoes feel even tighter, says Spangler.

Wide-toe box shoes

Some changes that can mitigate the effects of bunions include changing shoe gears, such as wearing wide-toe box shoes. By switching to a larger box or shoes with a more accommodating and flexible material (like mesh), those with bunions may feel more relief. If you have bunions, you may experience more pain and have less tolerance for narrow, more rigid materials like dress shoes, says Spangler.

Topical pain relief

If you’re looking to reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation, you can soak your feet in Epsom salt baths as this can help your bunions temporarily and alleviate the symptoms, according to Sharkey.

Frequently asked questions

There are many causes and factors that play into the development of bunions. Bunions are hereditary, so because you tend to inherit foot structure, some individuals are more prone to bunions than others, according to Sharkey. This includes hypermobile joints and is found more commonly in those with flat feet and low arches. Because bunions are inherited, you cannot prevent this cause, says Spangler.

According to Spangler, we can perhaps control how fast they progress with supportive shoes and orthotics, and avoid factors aggravating bunion formation, including narrow shoes, pointed shoes and prolonged high-heel use.

According to our experts, bunions are a progressive deformity. The rate at which they progress differs from person to person, with some developing bunions as early as their late childhood and teenage years while others don’t develop them until later in life, according to Sharkey. “I usually tell my patients that most are the result of your biomechanics and foot structure, meaning that it has been slowly happening since you started walking,” she says.

Looking at family history (since bunions are hereditary) can help you see how fast bunions have previously progressed in your family (although this is not always the case.) However, certain factors can speed up the process, such as improper shoe gear and certain activities, according to Sharkey.

Unfortunately, some bunions can cause discomfort and be bothersome during daily activities. Below, Sharkey breaks down a few effects.

  • If your shoes rub on the bunion bump it can be painful, cause swelling and redness and can cause a formation of blisters and calluses at the site of the bump.
  • Wearing certain shoes can cause numbness, tingling and a burning sensation that radiates into the big toe joint.
  • Bunions can cause a painful range of motion.
  • Pain can occur between the big toe and the second toe because the second toe is being pushed out of the way
  • Pain can occur at the ball of the foot. This is due to the rotation of the big toe joint being out of place causing foot pressure to be displaced and falling onto the balls of your foot.

“Surgery is the only way we can properly restore the alignment of the unstable joint that has rotated out of place,” says Sharkey. “We have other ways to help control symptoms but nothing that can correct the bunion outside of the operating room.” Luckily, in the past decade, there have been changes and innovations to help correct bunions and make recovery easier, according to Spangler.

A foot and ankle surgeon would need to evaluate the foot to select the right surgical procedure based on the patient’s age, activity level, and the degree of the deformity, Spangler says. Now there are many different procedures to fix a bunion deformity, and most procedures require making cuts in the bone and using screws or hardware to realign the joint, she says.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I arrange a house call in the Salt Lake City and surrounding areas?

All you need to do is call our appointment line at (435) 774-8517. We will then discuss your foot problem and schedule the house call to fit with your schedule.

What if I have an Urgent Foot Problem and want to be seen right away?

In the vast majority of cases, we can have the doctor at your home in less time than it would take for you to get to the Emergency Room and see a doctor. You just simply wait in the comfort of your own home. We offer house calls 24 hours a day, everyday. Please see the rates section of this site.

Will my insurance company reimburse me for house call visits by a podiatrist in Salt Lake City?

Insurance companies (especially PPO plans) will often reimburse a large portion of house call services as an “out-of-network” provider.  At the conclusion of your visit, we will provide you with a complete itemization of all charges that you paid for in a format known as a “superbill.”  The superbill will outline all of the required diagnosis codes (called ICD-9 codes) and procedure codes (called CPT codes). With these codes that we provide for you, the insurance company will be able to process the insurance claim that you submit to them.

We also provide a letter that explains all of the results of your visit and treatment. You may share this treatment plan letter with your insurance company, if they request medical justification for the house call and/or any procedures that were performed to treat your foot or ankle problem. Please contact your insurance company to verify that you have “out-of-network” benefits prior to scheduling your visit.

How do I pay for podiatry house call visits with Dr. Heninger?

In order to provide you with the highest level of service and convenience, we maintain a direct-practice model for our home visits. We offer extended home visits, email and telephone access to our podiatric physician and surgeon, in addition to house calls to treat a range of foot conditions. We are a fee-for-service practice for these home visits. Payment for visits may be made with check, cash, Visa, Mastercard, or  Paypal. Some patients also choose to pay with their flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health reimbursement accounts (HRAs) or health savings accounts (HSAs) to pay for services. Check with your accountant to determine the tax advantages of these methods of payment for health-related services.

Can I contact my house call foot doctor directly if I have a question?

Of course! We belive direct access to the doctor is an important component of quality health care. All of our patients are given the cell phone number and personal email of our podiatric physician and surgeon. As a client, you have the ability to get the answers you need, whenever you need, by phone, email, text message, or in person through an house call.

Can I get a copy of the complete Privacy Policy?

Yes, this will be sent to you via email prior to a scheduled visit.

Can I contact my doctor directly if I need a medication refill?

Absolutely!  Any patient previously treated by the doctor can receive refills on existing non-narcotic prescriptions over the phone for a small fee. We cannot offer prescription refills for patients who have not yet received direct care from our physician. It is against the law in most states to prescribe any medication over the phone without an examination. Existing patients may call the doctor directly to request prescription refills.

Does Dr. Heninger see Medicare patients?

Why Home Visits from Podiatrists Are Gaining Popularity

Why Home Visits from Podiatrists Are Gaining Popularity

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in how healthcare services are delivered, with a growing emphasis on convenience and patient-centered care.

This trend is especially evident in podiatry, where home visits from podiatrists are gaining popularity. In this blog post, we will explore the reasons behind this surge in demand for home visit from a podiatrist and its benefits to patients and practitioners.

The Changing Landscape of Healthcare

The healthcare landscape has been evolving rapidly, and one of the key drivers of this transformation is the desire for greater accessibility and convenience. Patients increasingly seek healthcare options catering to their busy lifestyles and individual needs. This shift has led to the rise of telemedicine, mobile health apps, and, notably, home visits from healthcare providers, including podiatrists.

Understanding Podiatry

Before delving into the reasons behind the popularity of podiatrist home visits, it’s essential to understand what podiatry entails clearly. Podiatrists are medical professionals specializing in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the feet, ankles, and lower extremities. They are crucial in maintaining overall mobility and quality of life for many individuals.

Reasons for the Surge in Popularity

Convenience and accessibility.

One of the primary reasons for the increasing popularity of podiatrist home visits is the unparalleled convenience they offer. Patients no longer need to travel to a clinic, find parking, or spend time in a waiting room.

Instead, they can receive expert foot care in the comfort of their own homes. This convenience is particularly beneficial for individuals with mobility issues, seniors, and those with busy schedules.

Personalized Care

Home visits allow podiatrists to provide more personalized care. When treating patients at home, podiatrists have a unique opportunity to assess their living environment, footwear, and daily routines, which can be crucial in understanding the root causes of foot problems. This personalized approach enables more effective treatment and preventive measures tailored to each patient’s needs.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Visiting a medical facility, even for routine check-ups, can be stressful for many people. By offering home-based care, podiatrists can help reduce the anxiety associated with medical appointments. Patients are more relaxed in familiar surroundings, providing a more positive healthcare experience.

Enhanced Doctor-Patient Relationship

Home visits foster stronger doctor-patient relationships. A patient’s home’s relaxed and intimate setting allows for better communication and trust-building between the podiatrist and the patient. Patients often feel more comfortable asking questions and discussing their concerns, leading to improved treatment outcomes.

Comprehensive Assessments

Home visits give podiatrists a more comprehensive view of their patients’ lives. They can observe patients moving around their homes, identify potential hazards, and recommend lifestyle modifications to prevent future foot problems. This holistic approach to foot care is precious in long-term management and prevention.

Elderly Care

As the global population ages, the demand for podiatry services among the elderly grows. Many seniors face difficulties traveling to medical facilities, and home visits offer a lifeline for them to receive essential foot care. Preventing and managing foot problems is crucial for maintaining independence and mobility in older people.

COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of telehealth and home-based medical services. With safety concerns and lockdowns in place, many patients turned to home visits for their podiatry needs to minimize exposure to healthcare settings. The trend will likely persist as people value safety and convenience in healthcare delivery.

Home visits from podiatrists are on the rise, driven by the growing demand for convenience, personalized care, and improved doctor-patient relationships. This shift in healthcare delivery is beneficial for patients and the podiatry profession as a whole. As the world of healthcare continues to evolve, home-based podiatry services are poised to play a vital role in enhancing foot health and overall well-being for patients of all ages.

Whether it’s the elderly, individuals with mobility issues, or those simply seeking a more comfortable healthcare experience, home visits from podiatrists are stepping up to meet their needs, one foot at a time.

PEARL, Miss. (WLOX) - With a two-run, 426-foot home run from Eduardo Garcia in the second inning and five scoreless innings from the bullpen, the Biloxi Shuckers (4-4) cruised to a 6-1 win over the Mississippi Braves (3-5) on Saturday night at Trustmark Park.

The Shuckers’ pitching staff set their season-high with 16 strikeouts and have allowed just two runs over the last three games. The Shuckers also set a season-high with 12 hits and went 7-15 with runners in scoring position.

Eric Brown Jr. started the Shuckers’ offense early with a leadoff single in the first inning off M-Braves starter Hurston Waldrep, the 52nd-ranked overall prospect per Baseball America . Two batters later, Wes Clarke gave the Shuckers a 1-0 lead with a single to center.

In the second, Freddy Zamora reached with a leadoff walk and Eduardo Garcia smashed a 426-foot home run to left-center, his first in Double-A, extending the lead to 3-0.

On the mound, Tyler Woessner worked around six hits over four innings. The lone run allowed came on an RBI single from Bryson Horne in the second, making it 3-1. Woessner’s night ended with one run allowed in four innings with seven strikeouts. The start extended the rotation’s streak to seven straight games with one run allowed or less.

Nick Merkel struck out two out of the bullpen before the Shuckers extended the lead with three runs in the seventh. The Shuckers sent nine to the plate in the inning, and scored off RBI singles from Ethan Murray, Eduardo Garcia, and Eric Brown Jr. Garcia’s single was part of a three-hit night, and he reached base four times.

In the bottom of the inning, Justin King struck out the side for Biloxi and Shane Smith struck out four over two scoreless innings to finish off the win.

Brown Jr., Garcia, and Noah Campbell all tallied multi-hit performances, including Brown Jr.’s first in Double-A. Merkel (1-1) earned the win while Waldrep (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs and walking four over 4.1 innings.

The Shuckers will wrap up the series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Trustmark Park. TJ Shook is slated to start for Biloxi after allowing one run in 4.2 innings in the series opener on Wednesday. JJ Niekro is set to start for the M-Braves after six shutout innings on Tuesday. A win for the Shuckers would split the series.

Fans can listen live on  Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network  with pregame coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. from the Ground Zero Blues Club Broadcast Booth.
