KISS announces final tour ever

By Andrea Park

September 20, 2018 / 3:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Fans can give Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer and Gene Simmons a kiss goodbye. KISS announced their final world tour, appropriately titled "End of the Road." The band performed "Detroit Rock City" on "America's Got Talent" before the big reveal on Tuesday.

The band has been active for 45 years. In a statement, they said, "All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who've filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years. This will be the ultimate celebration for those who've seen us and a last chance for those who haven't. KISS Army, we're saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we'll go out the same way we came in ... Unapologetic and Unstoppable."

  • Gene Simmons announces $2,000 box set, "The Vault"

In total, KISS has a discography of 20 studio albums, 8 live albums and 13 compilation albums. The band was founded in 1973.

The band has not announced yet when the tour will kick off, but KISS fan club members will be the first to know.

"End of the Road" is not KISS's first farewell tour. The band held "The Farewell Tour" from 2000 to 2002 with original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

Earlier this year, Stanley hinted at retirement during an interview with Billboard . He said, "I don't want to go leave home. I have a family and I have children and, honestly, I think my primary responsibility is to be a dad and I don't want to miss out on that. And certainly as we got older we know that life is finite and I pick and choose what I want to do at this point."

Kiss band members, from left, Tommy Thayer, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Paul Stanley participate in the ceremonial lighting of the Empire State Building on Thursday in New York.

In the 50 years since Kiss first kicked and thrashed its way onto the New York rock scene, the band has given the world sing-and-shout-along hits like "Detroit Rock City," "Crazy Crazy Nights" and "Beth," and live performances replete with blood-spattering, fire-breathing, pyrotechnics and gobs of cartoonish stage makeup.

"Their schtick lifted them up to the absolute top," music writer Joel Selvin , the author of numerous books about rock musicians including Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead and Sly and the Family Stone, told NPR.

On Saturday, the memorable stagecraft that made Kiss one of the biggest selling hard rock bands in the world will come to an end, as its members perform what they are touting as their final show of their aptly titled, four-year-long "End of the Road World Tour" — at Madison Square Garden in New York. The concert will be available to watch live on Pay-Per-View .

"It has nothing to do with personalities in the band or tensions or a difference of opinion or musicality. It's purely practical," said Kiss co-founder, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Paul Stanley in an interview with the music publication Ultimate Classic Rock of the band's reasons for bringing five decades of Kiss to an end. "You can play beat the clock, but ultimately the clock wins."

The city has apparently gone Kiss-crazy in the days leading up to the occasion, with the appearance of Kiss-themed taxis, Metro cards and pizza boxes. On Wednesday, the New York Rangers hosted KISS Game Night , featuring Kiss-related activities and "limited-edition KISS x Rangers merchandise." Band members also made an appearance at an Empire State Building lighting ceremony on Thursday. Staged in honor of Kiss' swan song, Empire State emitted the colored lights associated with the band — silver, red, purple, green and blue.

'We Wanted To Be Larger Than Life': Paul Stanley Of KISS On Almost 50 Years Of Rock

Music Interviews

'we wanted to be larger than life': paul stanley of kiss on almost 50 years of rock.

Despite all the hooplah, this may not in fact be Kiss' goodbye kiss. The band undertook a previous "farewell tour" more than 20 years ago. After a brief hiatus, it started touring again on and off in 2003. Live shows and album releases flowed on from there.

In interviews, band members have spoken about continuing on after Saturday's Madison Square Garden performance in one way or another. Both Stanley and co-frontman Gene Simmons have their own bands and say they aim at the very least to continue making appearances in those formats.

"Nobody ever really says goodbye," said rock critic Selvin, citing comebacks over the years by the likes of Cher, Steve Miller and the Grateful Dead. "It's a show business strategy. You take a bow. But there's always an encore."

Selvin said artists often reappear after retiring because they can make a lot of money owing to fans' pent-up demand. For example, the pop-punk band Blink-182 is earning four times as much on its current reunion tour than it did when it last re-united in 2009, according to Far Out magazine. (The band issued a statement in 2005 saying it was going on "indefinite hiatus," only to reunite four years later.)

"Personal life interferes, you want to disappear into the woodwork for a while and then demand builds and you go back to it," Selvin said. "Steve Miller took his band apart in '99. He was just tired. And he was out for six years. And then in 2005, he put his band back together and suddenly his price was up, and there was more interest in seeing him."

Meanwhile, some musical acts simply never retire. The Rolling Stones, for instance, are embarking on yet another North America tour in 2024. The band just announced additional dates .

Selvin doesn't think we've heard the last of Kiss.

"The rule of the farewell tour is that you have to say goodbye to every hall, and sometimes you have to say goodbye twice," Selvin said. "I do not expect this to be the last time that Kiss performs, any more than 'Fare Thee Well' was the last time The Grateful Dead performed."

More than four years after KISS hit the road for its farewell tour, the glam metal band has announced there’s finally an end in sight.

The previously announced final tour date was in 2021, but now the band is set to conclude its “End of the Road Tour” at the end of the year at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The final curtain call is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2023 — more than 50 years after the iconic band’s first show.

The tour kicked off in Vancouver on Jan. 31, 2019, and went on a pandemic-induced hiatus pushing shows set for 2020 to 2021. In 2022, the band admitted they weren’t quite ready to say farewell, and announced that they would be adding another 100 shows to their “End of the Road Tour.”

“It’s like painting a painting or writing a book. When somebody says, ‘When is it gonna be finished?’ You’re in the middle of it; you don’t know,” Simmons said in a 2022 interview with YouTube channel Chaoszine. “ ... this is a tour that will not stop until it stops.”

From there, the band will hit arenas in Palm Springs and Los Angeles, then onward to Washington, Canada, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois and Maryland before they close out where it all began in New York City on Dec. 1 and 2.

“KISS was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started,” the band stated on its website . “New York City has been a part of our ethos and storyline for more than four decades, so we felt it fitting to culminate our career on stage at Madison Square Garden.”

The musicians behind the makeup include two original members, frontman Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, along with drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer.

Kiss say farewell to live touring, become first US band to go virtual and become digital avatars

kiss first world tour

On Saturday night, Kiss closed out the final performance of their “The End of the Road” farewell tour at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden.

But as dedicated fans surely know — they were never going to call it quits. Not really.

During their encore, the band’s current lineup — founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — left the stage to reveal digital avatars of themselves. After the transformation, the virtual Kiss launched into a performance of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You.”

The cutting-edge technology was used to tease a new chapter of the rock band: after 50 years of Kiss , the band is now interested in a kind of digital immortality.

The avatars were created by George Lucas’ special-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, in partnership with Pophouse Entertainment Group, the latter of which was co-founded by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus. The two companies recently teamed up for the “ABBA Voyage” show in London, in which fans could attend a full concert by the Swedish band — as performed by their digital avatars.

Per Sundin, CEO of Pophouse Entertainment, says this new technology allows Kiss to continue their legacy for “eternity.” He says the band wasn’t on stage during virtual performance because “that’s the key thing,” of the future-seeking technology. “Kiss could have a concert in three cities in the same night across three different continents. That’s what you could do with this.”

In order to create their digital avatars, who are depicted as a kind of superhero version of the band, Kiss performed in motion capture suits.

Paul Stanley of KISS performs during the final night of the "Kiss Farewell Tour" on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at Madison Square Garden in New York. (Photo by Evan Agostini/Invision/AP)

Experimentation with this kind of technology has become increasingly common in certain sections of the music industry. In October K-pop star Mark Tuan partnered with Soul Machines to create an autonomously automated “digital twin” called “Digital Mark.” In doing so, Tuan became the first celebrity to attach their likeness to OpenAI’s GPT integration, artificial intelligence technology that allows fans to engage in one-on-one conversations with Tuan’s avatar.

Aespa, the K-pop girl group, frequently perform alongside their digital avatars — the quartet is meant to be viewed as an octet with digital twins. Another girl group, Eternity, is made up entirely of virtual characters — no humans necessary.

“What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are,” Kiss frontman Paul Stanley said in a roundtable interview. “It’s exciting for us to go the next step and see Kiss immortalized.”

“We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamed of before,” Kiss bassist Gene Simmons added. “The technology is going to make Paul jump higher than he’s ever done before.”

And for those who couldn’t make the Madison Square Garden show — stay tuned, because a Kiss avatar concert may very well be on the way.

Kiss Wrap Up 50-Year Live Career With Explosive New York City Tour Finale

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.

In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening. They weren’t acknowledged in any way throughout the night, which ended with a surprise announcement that Kiss will live on as digital avatars with help from Industrial Light & Magic.

“The end of the road is the beginning of another road,” Paul Stanley told the crowd before the last bows. “We’re not going anywhere. You’ll see us in all different things all the time. We’ll see you in your dreams.”

There was pyro hot enough to feel on your skin from 50 yards away, explosions loud enough to hurt your head even with earplugs in, and the ritualistic moments where Gene Simmons breathes fire and Paul Stanley zip-lines across the floor of the arena. And it all felt extra special since Madison Square Garden is just a few blocks from the rehearsal hall where the band was born back in the early Seventies.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

The show kicked off with an explosive “Detroit Rock City” and stuck largely to tunes from the band’s original makeup days like “Shout It Out Load,” “Deuce,” and “Cold Gin.” They did dip their toes into the post-makeup era with 1983’s “Lick It Up,” 1984’s “Heaven’s on Fire,” 1998’s “Psycho Circus,” and 2009’s “Say Yeah.” As always, Stanley did all the talking in his cornball preacher persona (“We better call the doctor! I’m not talking about just any doctor! I’m talking about our favorite doctor, Doctor Love!”), while Simmons remained silent, opening his mouth only to sing or spit fake blood.

The lights simply dimmed at the end of the song to reveal the new Kiss digital avatars performing “God Gave Rock and Roll to You II.” A New Era Begins” appeared on the screen along with a QR code that sent you to the Kiss website, and the announcement about the avatars.

Yes, KISS really is coming to Crandon International Raceway, as ticket on-sale dates, more details are announced

kiss first world tour

CRANDON – We finally have some details on the KISS concert happening in, of all places, the northwoods of Wisconsin this summer.

The legendary rockers announced June 1 they would be bringing the pyro and platform boots to Crandon International Raceway at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 1 as one of three newly added stops on their End of the Road Tour. Since Crandon isn’t exactly on the way from Norway or Australia — the band's closest stops on either side of the Crandon date — the announcement had a lot of fans doing a double take.

What brings the band playing the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to Crandon, about 110 miles northwest of Green Bay? The efforts of the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe and its casinos.

“The Tribe helped secure the concert to welcome KISS to Wisconsin and to celebrate the upcoming opening of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley’s Rock & Brews restaurant inside of Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee,” according to a release posted Sunday on the KISS website.

“The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe is honored to play a role in bringing KISS to Crandon, Rock & Brews to Milwaukee, and people together to enjoy this next era of entertainment in Wisconsin,” Forest County Potawatomi Community Tribal Chairman James Crawford said in a statement. “We cannot wait to welcome these two icons to the perfect backdrop of our northwoods, where we’ll show how Wisconsin truly loves to rock.”

The concert falls during the 54th Polaris Crandon World Championships and 8th Red Bull Crandon World Cup Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 at the raceway, an event that was expected to draw as many as 65,000 people in 2022.

Tickets go on sale to the public June 19, earlier for the KISS Army

Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. June 19 at paysbig.com/events . Prices start at $75 for general admission standing. Seated sections are $200 and $225. Pit standing is $275.

KISS Army fan club members will have access beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. A local market/racer sale will begin Sunday.

If the End of the Road Tour is indeed the band’s last as it has been billed, the Crandon concert would be KISS’ final visit to Wisconsin. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer last played the state in May 2022 for a show at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater in Milwaukee.

New Rock & Brews restaurant will open at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino

While in Milwaukee, Simmons and Stanley also stopped by Potawatomi Hotel & Casino for the groundbreaking of its new Rock & Brews restaurant, a chain co-founded by the two men. The restaurant is part of a $100 million renovation to Potawatomi’s third floor and is tentatively scheduled to open in August.

Northern Lights Casino, the 600-seat theater inside Potawatomi that hosted national touring acts, closed in January after 22 years.

According to the release from KISS, the Crandon concert is part of “a summer concert series that will usher exciting entertainment into Wisconsin and into Potawatomi Casinos and Hotels.”

Geezer Butler Recalls His Shocked Reaction to Seeing KISS Perform for the First Time During Black Sabbath’s 1975 Tour

by Clayton Edwards June 13, 2024, 10:43 am

Most modern metal bands can trace their lineage back to Black Sabbath. They’re hailed as the founders of heavy metal. There’s no denying that they changed the face of rock music forever. However, they were far from the only early innovators in the genre. Recently, Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler reflected on being outshined by KISS during their 1975 tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

In 1975, Black Sabbath was six albums into an iconic career. KISS, on the other hand, was three albums into their career after dropping two records in 1974. They were both massively successful acts. As a result, the kabuki-painted band from Detroit landed an opening spot for a few stops on Sabbath’s 1975 tour.

In a recent interview with Rock Cellar , Butler recalled the shock he felt after watching the opening act’s game-changing performance.

Geezer Butler Recalls When KISS Outshined Black Sabbath on Their Own Tour

“KISS opened a few shows for us in the mid-’70s,” Butler recalled. “KISS was the first band that ever used stage production,” he added. Their shows contained elaborate stage sets, pyrotechnic displays, and the band’s legendary costumes. “Bands like Black Sabbath used to just go on and plug in and play,” Butler said of concerts before Kiss.

“I mean, the shock of seeing that,” Butler reflected. “I went out and watched them. There were all these flames coming out of the stage and everything. It was like, ‘Oh, my God. What’s going on here?’”

Then, he talked about how things changed. “People had to start thinking about stage production after KISS. It was tough to follow them. We went on just as an ordinary band, with no effects or anything, and everybody else still had their mouths wide open from seeing KISS. We were like, ‘What the hell just happened?’”

Butler went on to say that he didn’t really listen to KISS’ music when he saw them onstage. Instead, he was wholly captivated by their groundbreaking stage show. The theatrics of their set all but overshadowed the songs they were playing for Butler. This, he said, taught him and his Black Sabbath bandmates a very valuable lesson. “We made sure that we never had KISS supporting us again.”

Frankie Capan III learned a lot from his 58, and it could help him reach the PGA TOUR

Tour Insider

Change Text Size

When you’re 24, life is still very much at your fingertips. The world is big, the world is yours. With professional golf, however, there’s no guarantee for any immediate success.

What there is, though, is an opportunity for big-time growth and maturity when you’re trying try climb the game’s biggest ladder. It’s something Frankie Capan III has leaned into so far this year, and after a first-round 58(!) in Texas, the lessons and the learning are hopefully setting him up for a fabulous season ahead.

“Last year I just learned a lot about myself and tying it into things to avoid and things to pour into,” Capan said. “It may not have been the best start to the season for me, but I feel like my game was trending in the right direction, so really I’ve just been working hard on doing the right things and keeping the game simple and believing in myself.”

Capan missed three of his first six cuts to start 2024 but has turned on the jets in his last three events, finishing T9-T8-4. That final fourth-place result began with his magic-number 58 at the Veritex Bank Championship, which was one off the Korn Ferry Tour’s all-time low single-round score of 57, set by Cristobal Del Solar at this year’s Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard.

Capan enters this week’s AdventHealth Championship at No. 22 on the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Points List. The top 30 after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership.

Lessons learned from the 58 and its aftermath could help him reach his career’s promised land.

Frankie Capan's interview after opening-round 58 at Veritex Bank Championship

With a laugh, Capan said he was very much aware of how many under par he was the whole time, but he forgot the par of the course. He thought his 8-footer on the final hole was for a 59.

Here’s how he explains it.

“I was obviously marking scores on the front nine but as I got to the back (nine) I was 6 under and birdied 10 and 11 and I was about to pull out the card and mark it up … but I just wanted to keep playing,” Capan said. “And because I wasn’t marking them … just kind of forgot the par of the course. I knew I was 13 under walking up the last, but in my head, I thought it was a par 72. I was asking my dad what (the final putt was for), and he said it was 58, and I was like, ‘Oh that’s cool.’

“I knew Scottie (Scheffler) shot 59. I don’t want to tie him. No offense to Scottie. I’d rather have it alone.”

The biggest learning experience for Capan, he said, was less about the in-the-moment scoring effort and more about everything that happened after-the-fact. Capan lives about 30 minutes away from Texas Rangers Golf Club, and there were some second-round delays due to weather. He found himself caught between traveling home or sticking around and waiting, and when he ended up waiting, he ended up talking. A lot.

“It was just an odd circumstance that occurred. I got to the course and sat there for about four hours before teeing off (and) a ton of people were talking about the round and I just had to get away from it and listen to some music, sit in a corner,” Capan said. “It’s not like I’m thinking, ‘Well the next time I shoot 58,’ but the next time I’m in a similar situation I’ll probably not be chatting to so many people.

“My agent and I were talking, and he was like, ‘Obviously you just did it, but you have the ability (to shoot 58) every day.’ I shot 58 and didn’t birdie two of the easiest holes. Understanding when I’m playing well, those are the things I’m capable of doing. It’s just golf and it’s just a number, but obviously people are going to make a big deal – and it is a big deal – but it was a fun round and something I’ll never forget.”

Capan said he’s made some personal and professional changes for 2024 that have given him a new level of comfort as he navigates the season. He said he’s been happy with how his iron game has improved year-over-year (he was 90th in Greens in Regulation in 2024 but has improved to 22nd in the same statistic this season) and, on the mental side, he’s discovered how powerful a tool the brain can be.

“Just allowing myself to play with a little bit of freedom and trust my game,” Capan said. “Golf is a funny game and some days you feel like you have it or you don’t and other days you can just scrape together a 65. Allowing myself to have the freedom to have fun and hit golf shots, I just want to get as much out of it as I can.”

Frankie Capan III prepares for 3M Open with mom on the bag

Capan has given himself an excellent shot at earning a PGA TOUR card for the first time but admits for 2024 he didn’t really have any specific goals. Things are more process-oriented this season, but of course, if he ends up No. 1 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, you won’t hear him complaining.

Some changes are afoot for Capan, but with plenty of confidence and a good amount of comfort with those changes, he’s hopeful for a solid summertime stretch on the Korn Ferry Tour.

“For me it’s more just trying to play the best golf that I can play and just get the most out of myself. There have been decisions that my team and I have made, and a lot of them have helped me narrow my focus on what I love to do,” Capan said. “If my time is oriented towards the distraction of something else, I feel like I’m going to be diluted when I’m competing, whereas (that isn’t the case) if I’m confident in what I’m playing and what I have in my bag.

“The on-course/off-course balance is in a really good spot right now. I have some great people around me and it’s fun to see some good results.”
