A Guide to Rappers Touring in 2023

In the world of hip-hop , the prevailing theme for the summer of 2023 appears to be "outside," emphasizing the excitement of experiencing live music and concerts.

While Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour  has dominated the summer conversation, hip-hop's heavyweight artists are are connecting with their fans in person. Although these may not be the first tours since the global impact of Covid-19, they could very well be the first opportunity for fans to witness their beloved rappers live since 2019. Rest assured, rap fans are covered with comprehensive coverage of all the exciting hip-hop tours happening this summer and into the fall.

Drake and 21 Savage  have been on their highly anticipated It's All a Blur Tour  all summer, in support of their 2022 album, Her Loss . Earlier this year,  Drake gave fans an intimate show at the Apollo Theater in Harlem , as well as a performance at J. Cole's Dreamville Festival  back in April. However, this tour marks his first co-headlining venture since the 2018 Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour , making it an exciting return to the stage for the acclaimed artist. Drake not only brings his extensive history of hits from his previous albums to the stage, but he's also been teasing his upcoming For All the Dogs album .

Celebrating the 20-year milestone of his iconic album, Get Rich or Die Tryin' , 50 Cent  has embarked on a 64-date tour for fans. Joining him on tour is legendary rhymer  Busta Rhymes and singer Jeremih .

Lil Baby  has also hit the stage for his  It's Only Us Tour , where he's joined by a lineup including GloRilla , Gloss Up ,  Rylo Rodriguez  and Hunxho.

11 Rappers Set to Make it Big in 2023

The rap world is ever-changing, and 2022 showed us where we might be heading next. The year was full of solid releases from budding stars who set the stage for a lower-key sensibility within hip-hop. It was a year where fans turned away from the larger-than-life superstars towards more down-to-earth figures in the scene. The rise of homegrown acts like Babytron and newcomers Ice Spice proved that hip-hop’s new landscape is abundant. In today’s rap world, there’s something for everyone. 

After Kei Henderson — who managed 21 Savage until late 2019 — took a hiatus from hip-hop,  Ben Reilly , an ATL transplant by way of Brooklyn, was the rapper to bring her back. In 2021, his first solo project, Freelance , caught her ear. Last year, a cut from it, “Maytag (Tax-Free),” caught everyone else’s with an artful TikTok featuring Reilly delivering a sharp a capella portion of “Maytag” took off on the app. Today, the clip has over six million views, and the full song has over 30 million plays on Spotify. He tells Rolling Stone he considers 2022 his first year as a professional musician.

His visuals are crisp and compelling; his songs and projects are conceptual. For example, Freelance was inspired by Reilly’s time in pandemic isolation spotting red cardinals on every run. “And every time I seen them, I would feel at peace,” Reilly told Complex . “As I looked more into it, I learned the longest that a cardinal has ever lived in captivity was 13 years. But in freedom, it was 28 years. I challenged myself to make 13 songs within the 28-minute mark, and that’s what I did.” — M.C

Ice Spice Gets Slizzy in the Music Video For Cash Cobain and Bay Swag’s 'Fisherrr' Remix

I went to cash cobain's slizzyfest and all i got was that classic nyc feeling, lola brooke: say hello to brooklyn rap's new torchbearer, real boston richey.

After officially starting his rap career in 2021, Tallahassee’s own Real Boston Richey released his first full-length project, Public Housing , which debuted at 60 on the Billboard 200 and number nine on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart. On tracks like “I Want You” and “No Static,” Richey shows off his gift for finding the most impressive pockets to place his flows. 

As an MC, Richey’s effortless knack for melody and his peculiar rap cadence, similar to Michigan rappers’ but true to his Florida roots, cemented him a spot on our list. He explains that his patent flow comes from “God really,” said Richey. “My flow is like how I actually talk, my regular swag. I just speed it up to catch the beat.” Still, his stories of triumph from poverty on tracks like “Getting Better” could find Richey at the forefront of rap.“Public housing is where I went through the most problems,” says Richey. “Where I made the most money and learned how to rap. It’s where I learned how to be a man and get through certain situations.” 

“It’s about not letting what I’ve been through be a hurdle,” he explains. “I’m putting the things that hurt me the worst to the side. Nothing stopped me.” After releasing Public Housing 2 at the top of this year, it is safe to say there are no signs of Richey slowing down. Last year was like a blur,” he says. “I accomplished so much in a year, and it was really a learning experience. I learned that music controls everything. The biggest thing as an artist, even bigger than doing shows, is staying at the studio more than you do anything.” — D.G

Detroit has been spearheading the rap game for the past couple of years. Among some of the new wave leaders, like Peezy, Icewear Veezo, and Babyface Ray, is Veeze. Those tapped into the Detroit rap scene are probably familiar with Veeze’s clever wordplay and potential in his future rap career. He’s already made cameos in a ton of Lil Baby and Babyface Ray videos sporting a fitted cap. He even made his debut on the Billboard Hot 100 with the Lil Baby and 42 Dugg-assisted single “U-Digg,” which reached No 52. 

Veeze’s 2020 “Law and Order” caught viral attention thanks partly to producer Smerf Beats’ sample of the popular crime procedural’s theme song. All the while, the track showcased Veeze’s smooth, slurred flow full of metaphors. His appearance on Babyface Ray’s “Gallery Dept” and several appearances on Lil Yatchy’s Michigan Boy Boat prove that Veeze is a capable wordsmith. With more music and time, he will only become sharper. His 2022 release “Close Friends” offered quotable lines filled with humor like, “I be ballin’ more than I be rappin’, I’m an athlete/Diamonds on me movin’, look like Usher when he roller skate.” 

Veeze’s slow build is poised to pay off soon enough, and he knows it. “I basically did an internship to become a Superstar in 2022,” he says. “I got a chance to see how much more work I have to put in, but I had a lot of fun. I charted for the first time. I went overseas for the first time––I had moments I’ll never forget.”   — D. G

Last summer, TiaCorine experienced her first show as a headliner and got to do so with a home-state advantage in NC. She told AltPress that her 6-year-old daughter is her biggest fan. “She knows all the words,” she said tearily. “She says, ‘You just got this.’ The fans chant my name. They were like, ‘Tia, Tia,’ and I come offstage, she just starts crying. I ask her what’s wrong, and she’s like, ‘I’m so proud of you, Mommy. You did so good. You’re so amazing.’ And that was just… whew.”

“2022 was definitely a surprise,” Tia tells Rolling Stone . “I had a lot of confidence in my new album, but the success of ‘Freaky T’ has become life-changing. In 2023, I’m looking forward to releasing more music and doing my first international tour.” On her docket for the year are remixes to “FreakyT” (we hope Duke Deuce’s is first), moving up the fliers for some music festivals, and a few surprises. — M.C

Before the evolution of “drill” music, there was “trap” music. Without the efforts of Atlanta rap pioneers like T.I., Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane, drill music simply couldn’t exist. The Chief Keef “drill” movement couldn’t emerge from Chicago and create a cultural phenomenon, birthing a subgenre that artists all over the globe would go on to partake in. In a full circle moment, Atlanta’s Baby Drill directly represents what can happen when the two worlds collide. His innate trap sound spills out thanks to his Georgia roots, not to mention his impressive new take on ad-libs, his signature one being the swift yell of “Baby Drill,” almost crammed in the middle of his bars, but it works. While plenty of artists from Atlanta make drill music with trap influences, Baby Drill’s persistent and aggressive bars over trap-like beats sit him at the forefront of his city’s immense rap scene. With notable co-signs from Drake, 21 Savage, and Young Nudy, Baby Drill has pushed his way out of local recognition. 

Stove God Cooks

“ Stove God Cooks is that storyteller, that punchline king, that cocaine rap,” Westside Gunn told Rolling Stone last year while extolling the components of Griselda’s greatness. Almost everyone in the Buffalo-based crew released projects last year except Cooks, who instead made his presence felt with six show-stopping appearances on Westside Gunn’s 10, and on “Blow For Blow” from Rome Streetz’ Kiss The Ring , where he displayed his combination of vivid storytelling and wit with lines like, “Had the bread stuffed in a box, flame so hot, I dropped the pot / I caught it and the cookie still was good, I’m Magic Johnson.” 

The Syracuse native can stand bar for bar with anyone, but his mic presence radiates a charisma and a knack for melody that sets him apart from the gritty street rappers casual fans may lump him with. He emerged as Aaron Cooks in the mid-2010s, when he signed to Busta Rhymes’ Conglomerate and was managed by Lord Jamar. Cooks didn’t release a project but showed his skills on numerous freestyles that displayed the remnants of the rapper he’d come to be. His bars on DJ Vlad, Sway In The Morning stirred intrigue for what he had in store — but his moment didn’t come on Conglomerate. 

Eventually, Cooks rebranded as StoveGod Cooks and met Roc Marciano, who produced Reasonable Drought, an underrated 2020 album where Cooks delivered an intriguing ode to the trap. Cooks’ compelling lyricism shone on tracks like “Rose Royce Break Lights,” “John $tarks,” and “Cocaine Cologne,” where he attacks Roc’s loops with an unmistakably east coast mesh of ferocity and slickness. 

“Stovey’s Home! This year, I’m stepping into my destiny with a new album,” he tells Rolling Stone . “I’m putting the stove on my back and carrying it out of the underground to the highest heights the universe sees fit for me.” — A. G

Cash Cobain 

Cash Cobain is renowned as the Sample God for his ability to take any loop, throw quaking drums under it, and turn it into a banger. He’s produced for the likes of Lil Yachty, B-Lovee, Shawny Bin-Laden, Chow Lee , Central Cee and numerous other rappers — and he also has his own solo career. 

He released Sliick Cobain in 2020, and in 2021, he dropped Nirvana and 719 Deluxe. Last year, his work on 2 Slizzy 2 Sexy with his creative comrade Chow Lee showed him exploring New Jersey Club and helping drill pivot in a new direction. “J Holiday” showcases Cash and Chow crooning to their next one-nighter over sparse drums and a catchy J Holiday sample. “Jenni” has a similar approach, with both songs paired in a video where the two are downing Henny and enjoying the company of a cadre of women. 

The right sample can trigger a nostalgia that cures all generational fractures; a song like B-Lovee’s Mary J. Blige-sampling “My Everything,” which Cobain produced, bonds the 40-year-old Mary stan with the 19-year-old drill junkie. What Cash does with his samples doesn’t just highlight the musicality of drill, but its cultural value — which means a lot in a time when so many forces in New York vie to stifle it.  With an album that he tells us is coming soon, Cobain says, “2022 was an amazing year. I feel like I set the tone and changed the sound waves with the sampling and even the Jersey Club the way I did—it was different from others, I made a new sauce. Going into 2023, I got a lot of different sounds and things in the tuck for y’all.” — A. G

Signed to 4th & B’way/Def Jam Recordings, Kidd Kenn is gearing up for a big year with a slew of enticing opportunities under wraps. “I feel like 2022 was amazing,” he tells Rolling Stone. “From sync in games like Need for Speed and NBA 2K to the visuals, to the features with Delli Boe, Erica [Banks], and Baby Tate , to me putting in the work and showing why I’m not going anywhere! I’m looking forward to more features and collabs, working with more brands, playing more festivals, and really showing my fans and the world a new side of me and breaking through in every way I can.” — M.C

Chow Lee 

Chow Lee is at the forefront of an exciting fusion of hip-hop and dance music permeating the rap world (read: Lil Uzi Vert’s “Wanna Rock”). He’s a purveyor of so-called “sexy drill,” a sound that achieved new fame last year through Chow’s collaborations with Cash Cobain on their album 2 Slizzy 2 Sexy . In 2021 he dropped five projects which displayed the first glimpses of what his sound would come to be known as. Listening back to songs like “RN,’ where Chow rhymes, “I eat her pussy like it’s ziti,” it’s little wonder where the coinage comes from. He rhymes with a cool that one could expect from someone with such a erotic catalog, offsetting his often charged up production with slinky melodies rife with raunchy lyrics. 

Chow Lee is already a Tri-state area cult hero, tearing down venues with turnt-up performances that take cues from their raucous videos. But with the public’s newfound zeal for the frenetic, triplet kick-tinged soundscapes that Chow helped popularize, he may be primed to have the whole country doing the Blick dance. 

“2022 was amazing. We dropped 2 Slizzy 2 Sexy, and It went crazy. I did my first Rolling Loud with my brothers Cash Cobain and Lonny Love, plus many other shows, and I gained a bunch of new fans,” he tells Rolling Stone . “In 2023, I’m looking forward to dropping a new project and collaborating with more artists.” — A. Drake knows. The rap icon DMed Trayle after his 2021 Rolling Loud Miami set (his first ever onstage performance), giving him kudos on his music. Drake also offered to do a song with Trayle “anytime he needs him,” but to Trayle’s credit, he hasn’t needed any co-signs — though the stars are still intrigued with what he’s been putting together. Later in 2021, Gunna jumped on a remix of “OK Cool,” and Thug actually offered to sign him to YSL, but Trayle passed, ultimately signing to 10K projects in May of this year. 

He was a busy man in 2022, releasing four EPs, all displaying a mastery of his sound. Trayle draws listeners in with chilling lyrics not concerned with over-the-top threats but by expressing the dread of being consumed by an environment where trust and love are hard to come by. That dynamic is most at play on “Alter Ego,” a creative concept track from HH3, where he goes back and forth with his evil twin and tries to figure out which one represents his truth. He started 2023 with “Alter Ego 2,” rhyming, ‘I can give a fuck who don’t like who long as my son richer.” He’ll have no worries in that department at the pace he’s going. “My 2022 was insightful. In 2023 I’m looking forward to a bigger platform,” he tells Rolling Stone .  — A. G

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop by seeing some masters of the craft and today’s newest hip-hop stars on tour. More recently, he became the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017 and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence in 2021. 

After 30 years, LL Cool J is back with a headliner tour to the delight of his fans. He will be teaming up with DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Roots and DJ Z-Trip, along with a slew of special guests like Queen Latifah, Rick Ross and Ice-T on this star-studded tour. New Class of Hip-Hop Stars

The hip-hop music of today has evolved from its roots and branched out into genres like freestyle, hip-hop soul, pop rap and snap rap music. From the late ‘90s to the 2000s, the world saw a new wave of artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. Beginning this fall, YG , Tyga and Saweetie will embark on a joint headliner West Coast tour. Fans got a sample of  the joint album by YG and Tyga with the June release of “Platinum.” The Compton-based rappers paid tribute to their roots with the single, which has been hailed as a “defiant, California-inspired anthem” ( RAP-UP , 2023). The duo has teamed up several times in the past on songs like “West Coast Weekend” and “Run” with 21 Savage and BIA. 

This tour will be Saweetie’s first headliner, giving the “Icy Grl” rapper an opportunity to promote her music. 2023 proved that live music is back in a big way.

Fans saw quite a few impressive hip-hop tours in 2023. Many of them coincided with the biggest releases of the year, some in celebration of major career milestones, and others serving as signifiers of artists' new creative pursuits. As live music continues to pick back up following years of postponements and cancellations related to the pandemic, artists have kicked things into high gear, seemingly making up for the lost time.

Supporters have gotten the chance to catch beloved legacy acts, artists new to the mainstream embarking on their first-ever large-scale tours, and irrefutably skilled performers honed in more than ever this year, proving that live music is back in a big way. Check out some of the most iconic tours of 2023 below.

Beyonce - The RENAISSANCE Tour

In May, Beyonce embarked on her anxiously awaited RENAISSANCE world tour in Europe, setting off on the North American leg in July. The Texas native went about as big as one could go, enlisting the help of a massive flying "disco horse" as well as other extravagant props, and leaning into the tour's silver theme with her intricate costumes. The hive followed suit , coming through with similarly elaborate looks in line with the essence of the tour. Beyonce's nearly three-hour sets spanned almost the entirety of her discography, packing in plenty of fun crowd-pleasers and unapologetic anthems.

Her 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy also adorably joined her onstage as a dancer throughout the majority of the tour, the cherry on top for dedicated Bey fans. After closing the tour in October, Beyonce immediately got to work on her corresponding concert film and documentary. It arrived in theaters on December 1, expectedly taking over the box office. It saw the largest opening for the first weekend of December in two decades, bringing in $21 million.

Drake & 21 Savage - The It's All A Blur Tour

In July, Drake and 21 Savage kicked off the It's All A Blur tour in support of their 2022 collaborative LP, Her Loss. They have since made their way across North America, performing in over 20 cities. Up until October, 21 Savage was unable to join the Toronto native for the tour's Canadian stops due to immigration issues. He later secured his green card, as revealed in Drake's track "8AM In Charlotte," leading to speculation that he'd appear at the tour's final scheduled dates in Toronto. Fans were left disappointed when night one came and went, with no sign of 21 Savage.

Rumors swirled that 21 Savage wouldn't appear in Toronto at all, but luckily, he was able to perform on night two. Drake has since announced another leg of the tour alongside J. Cole, Big as The What? . while 21 Savage went on to perform across Europe, making the most of his new immigration status. This tour was Drake's first in five years and featured plenty of special guests, giveaways, and more. It also coincided with the rollout of his eagerly-anticipated album For All The Dogs , making for some seriously charged crowds.

The Weeknd - The After Hours Til Dawn Tour

The Weeknd set off on his After Hours Till Dawn tour in the summer of 2022 and has been making his way around the world ever since. After wrapping up his scheduled North American dates, he embarked on the European and Latin American leg of the tour in 2023. Heading into the new year, he'll make stops around Oceania.

The performer has broken various records so far, hitting several memorable milestones throughout his trek across Europe. He broke London Stadium's attendance record, drawing in a staggering 80,000 fans. The tour later secured the title of the highest-grossing tour for a Black artist in European history. So far, fans have seen The Weeknd perform hits from 2020's After Hours , 2022's Dawn FM , and more. Striking visuals, unforgettable costumes, pyrotechnics and more have made the tour one to remember, cementing its place as one of the most memorable of the year.

Travis Scott - The Circus Maximus Tour

Following the release of UTOPIA , Travis Scott performed at the iconic Circus Maximus stadium in Rome. This followed the cancellation of his previously scheduled performance at the Pyramids of Giza. The show was a spectacle and even saw a surprise appearance from Kanye West. Shortly after, he announced his Circus Maximus tour in support of the album.

He kicked off the tour, which will see him stop in over 30 cities around the U.S. and Canada, in October. After taking over the charts with Utopia and with no doubts that the hitmaker would go all out, tickets for the trek went fast . Boasting elaborate stage design, pyrotechnics, and setlists comprised of an abundance of fan favorites, his performances have been a sight to see. After watching supporters clamor to get their hands on tickets, Travis Scott announced additional dates in November that run into next year.

50 Cent - The Final Lap Tour

In May, 50 Cent announced that he'd be taking a major trek across North America and Europe in honor of the 20th anniversary of his 2003 album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ . Marketed as the performer's last all-in tour , as 50 Cent plans to adjust his focus to his other business endeavors, fans knew they were in for something big. Consequently, tickets have been selling like wildfire, with 840K purchased only a week after sales began. The hitmaker's been joined by Busta Rhymes at all stops, and Jeremih for North American dates.

Audiences have been hyped at all of these shows, and understandably so. The 48-year-old has been giving his Final Lap his all , performing his classics and bringing out countless high-profile special guests. So far, fans have been surprised with the likes of Eminem, Nas, Fat Joe , and more. Fif's currently on the international leg of the tour, which will run into 2024.

Doja Cat - The Scarlet Tour

Doja Cat embarked on the Scarlet tour on Halloween this year after unleashing her fourth studio album. Scarlet arrived alongside plenty of eye-catching and spooky visuals, indicating that supporters were in for quite a show when she set off on tour. It's safe to say they haven't been disappointed. The hitmaker has come through with plenty of dancing, fun and intricate costumes, and more.

Her setlists have included plenty of chart-topping Scarlet tracks, along with early hits, and even some covers. While performances from Doja have been exciting enough, she's also been joined by Grammy nominee Ice Spice throughout the tour. The 23-year-old has gotten similarly comfortable in the charts over the past year or so, and has plenty of fun fan-favorite tracks, making for an entertaining show all around .

Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour

Back in August, Lauryn Hill announced that she'd be embarking on a tour across the U.S. and Canada in honor of the 25th anniversary of her 1998 LP, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill . Joining the New Jersey native would be none other than her Fugees groupmates Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. The news followed a mini-reunion that fans saw earlier in the year at the 2023 Roots Picnic. At the time, they were told to "stay tuned," and were not left disappointed.

So far, audiences have seen the hitmaker perform classics from her Grammy-winning debut, as well as fan favorite Fugees hits. After setting off in September, however, Hill unfortunately had to postpone the remainder of the tour. Only a couple of months in, she revealed that she had “been battling serious vocal strain." She's now taking time off to rest her vocal cords but promises that the tour will conclude in 2024.

A Guide to Rappers Touring in 2023

In the world of hip-hop , the prevailing theme for the summer of 2023 appears to be “outside,” emphasizing the excitement of experiencing live music and concerts.

While Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour is anticipated to dominate the summer conversation, hip-hop’s heavyweight artists are also preparing to connect with their fans in person. A new generation of lyrical phenoms and hit makers has been making an impact on Hip-Hop that will last for years to come. Within the past few months, we've witnessed an array of rappers shed their "upcoming artist" status and evolve into the most promising rookies in the industry. Artists like Ice Spice , Finesse2tymes , Lola Brooke and others have made waves with their music that have taken them to incredible heights in their respective careers. So much so that fans are finally hearing their hits across hundreds of Hip-Hop radio stations across the country.

While some Hip-Hop heads have come to know and love the aforementioned artists, there are still plenty more MC's that are also rising in the ranks from California's LaRussell to Georgia's Cae Cartier . There are also a few women who are making shaking up the industry with their distinguished flows and catchy bars like Memphis' Gloss Up and New York's Lady London . Ice Spice has only been in the game for two years and she’s already impacted Hip-Hop’s drill scene in New York City and beyond. The Bronx native made her grand entrance with her “Bully Freestyle” produced by RIOTUSA, who also crafted her other hits “No Clarity” and “Euphoric." Following her On The Radar freestyle, Ice Spice and RIOTUSA hit the jackpot after “Munch (Feelin’ U),” went viral and got praise from the likes of Drake and Cardi B. After her breakthrough hit had mobs of fans following her every move, Ice Spice inked a deal with 10K Projects/Capitol Records and released her debut EP Like..? The project contains all her hits plus “Gangsta Boo” featuring Lil Tjay. Her latest collaboration with PinkPantheress “Boy’s a liar Pt. 2” has also impressed the masses. As of February, Ice Spice’s six-track EP has sold an impressive 100,000 units according to Chart Data. We know she’ll go on to sell way more in the future.

SleazyWorld Go

The Sleazy campaign has been nonstop since 2020. Upon releasing his first project Big Sleaz, SleazyWorld Go established himself as the grimiest lyricist to come from his hometown of Kansas City, MO with trap bangers like “Sliding” and “Pass My The Glock.” Fans’ response to his records around his city, and eventually around the country, pushed him to drop more records like his most popular hit “Sleazy Flow.” The bass-heavy anthem laced with a catchy piano loop dropped in 2021 and caught the attention of Lil Baby, who hopped on the official “Sleazy Flow” (Remix). Soon after, other remixes from NLE Choppa, Yungeen Ace and more began to flood the Internet. Over the past year, Sleazy gained even more hype with the release of his debut album Where The Shooters Be via Island Records. The project features Offset, Fredo Bang, G Herbo, Rich The Kid and more. He kicked off 2023 by being nominated for Best New Hip-Hop Artist ahead of the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards , and dropping more new music. Where The Shooters Be 2 , which is the deluxe version of his debut LP, gifts fans with five new records before he heads out on his first tour this year.

Fans of GloRilla will recognize her best friend Gloss Up from her infamous “FNF (Let’s Go)” music video. While Big Glo found fame under Yo Gotti’s CMG imprint, Gloss Up landed her own deal with Quality Control and has been making a name for herself in the game ever since. Gloss Up has been posting her freestyles over songs from T.I., Chris Brown, Lil Baby and others to YouTube since 2015. She released her first mixtape Different Shades of Gloss in 2019 and followed-up with a handful of singles like “Raw,” “Gloss Up Sonshine” and more. Last year she teamed up with Lakeyah and Bankroll Freddie before she teamed up with HitKidd once again for “Shabooyah” featuring Aleza, K Carbon and Slimeroni. She reunited with the aforementioned crew of ladies for “Eeny Meeny Miny Mo” off her debut EP Before The Gloss Up . The 13-track project, which also features GloRilla and Icewear Vezzo, proves Big Gloss is here to stay.

Fridayy’s bone-chilling voice has captivated the industry in recent years, but he’s actually been making music for nearly a decade. He dropped his first track in 2014 as an artist. However, he landed his first major placement as producer on Chris Brown’s Breezy album. Since then, he formally broke on the scene on DJ Khaled’s “God Did” alongside JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and John Legend. A few months later, he appeared on Lil Baby’s “Forever” on It’s Only Me and dropped his debut EP Lost In Melody featuring Vory. He continued to impress fans by receiving several Grammy nominations for “God Did” and making his debut performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards . Shortly after he got off the stage, Fridayy delivered the deluxe version of Lost In Melody with five brand new songs including “Shoot” with Ty Dolla $ign. Fridayy’s career is literally prospering before our eyes, and he’s still going up as we speak. It’ll be impossible to miss his rise to the top this year.

Rome Streetz is finally receiving the attention and praise he deserves.. Since breaking onto the scene with his 2016 mixtape I Been Thru Mad Sh*t , the New York City rapper, who’s name is inspired by his numerous treks from Queens to Harlem, has consistently delivered hard-hitting bars in every song he makes. Inspired by the Golden era of Hip-Hop, Rome Streetz is able to utilize classic flows from the 90s and turn them into modern stories that his fans can relate to today. Rome released 13 projects independently before he landed at Griselda Records in 2021. Prior to signing, Rome delivered four projects that year: Death & The Magician with DJ Muggs, Genesis 1:27 , Razor’s Edge and Coup De Grace with Ransom. Nearly a year after the latter project, Streetz dropped his debut under Griselda, Kiss The Ring . Rome hasn’t slowed down since. He’s about to hit the road in March to bring his latest album to more cities across the country.

Jeleel! Is quickly becoming a household name in the festival circuit. He’s only been active in the rap game since 2018, but he’s managed to build a massive following due to his highly energetic records and his explosive stage presence during his concerts. After dropping projects like Angel From Heaven and Generation Z , the Rhode Island native delivered his single “Dive In!” which blew up on digital streaming platforms and social media. Since then, he landed himself a deal with 10K Projects and hit up every festival stage possible from Rolling Loud to Made In America Festival. His debut album Real Raw , which is led by his recent banger “Ride The Wave!”, is expected to drop this spring.

Rob49 has spent the past two years consistently establishing himself alongside some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop. Since he broke out on the scene with his debut project 4our The World in 2020, the New Orleans rapper has followed-up with a slew of singles with Babyface Ray, Icewear Vezzo, Doe Boy, Birdman, Curren$y and more. In 2021, Rob49 got Lil Baby to hop on his song “Vulture Island V2,” which brought him even more attention. He’s dropped five projects in total including Vulture (2020), Krazy Man (2020), 4GOD (2021) and his latest body of work Vulture Island , which arrived last April. Within the past two months alone, Rob49 released two new singles “4GOD II” and “Ball N Chill” appeared on two major projects from Trippie Redd and French Montana. It’s safe to say Rob49 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Cae Cartier

Cae Cartier only has four major singles that have hit streaming platforms within the past year, but all of them are fire. Despite making music since 2019, Cae Cartier began to take his music career seriously last year. Since then,he’s delivered some of the grittiest records to come out of Atlanta in a long time like “Smoke” and “Quicksand.” His provocative, yet passionate delivery blends well with his eloquent flows and rugged bars. Not only can serve up heat in every song he drops, but he also knows how to make his music stand out with menacing visuals. His video for “Tuci” went viral and amassed over 340K views since it dropped at the beginning of February, and his latest video for “Mozart” is also racking up hundreds of thousands of views over a week after its release. Look out for his debut EP dropping this spring via Geffen Records & Special ENT.

Lola Brooke

Don’t ever play with Lola Brooke . The Brooklyn rapper who reps Bed-Stuy already had a buzz going in 2016 strictly based on her witty freestyles alone. After her "Brooklyn Freestyle" blew up, she was noticed by Team 80 Productions founder Eugene Sims, who later signed her. From there, Brooke continued to gain traction with other bangers like "Back to Business" and "Gator Season." She finally made her way into the spotlight following the release of her smash hit “Don’t Play With It” featuring Billy B. The street banger has earned her praise from Lil’ Kim, Future and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, who’ve all invited her to perform her viral record on various stages throughout her hometown. Now that she's signed to Artista and Team 80 Productions , her debut EP is currently in the works and is expected to drop sometime this year.

Apollo Lofton

Miami’s own Apollo Lofton has been on the grind for years, but now he’s finally starting gaining the traction he needs to make it to the big leagues. Following the release of his 2020 project Truth Is I’m Terrified , the rapper made headlines for approaching Drake after he left a restaurant in South Beach and performed a freestyle over the instrumental to “No Friends in the Industry” off Drizzy’s Certified Lover Boy album. Drake was so impressed that he started following him on Instagram. Since then, he’s gained other co-signs from Kanye West to Miami legend Emilio Estefan, and released more music. He spent the past year pushing records like "Never Trust a Soul," "You'll Never Love Me" and "Play The Villain." He closed out 2022 by releasing his impressive project Chaos Is Necessary . It’s only a matter of time before Apollo Lofton gifts his fans with more new music in 2023.

Symba has been on the rise for years, but he’s finally being recognized as the talented MC he’s always strived to become. The Bay Area native dropped his major label debut Don't Run From R.A.P. via Atlantic Records with an all-star crew of collaborators including 2 Chainz, Ty Dolla $ign, Moneybagg Yo, O.T. Genesis, Too $hort and more. Songs like "Big Homie" with 2 Chainz, "Gotta Love It" with Ty Dolla $ign, and "Follow Me" impressed the masses. Yet, it was his collaborative album with DJ Drama that truly had people paying attention to his artistry. Results Take Time not only proved Symba's star power, but it also shows fans how tapped into the culture he is. The 24-year-old recruited heavy hitters like Pusha T, Key Glock and Roddy Ricch along with other rising acts like Fridayy, Kali and others. He hasn’t released any new music this year, but that might change as he gets closer his scheduled performance at the 2023 Roots Picnic.

Memphis’ own Big Boogie has been rapping to vent about his inner pain and frustrations since 2017. Now he’s got a lot more reasons to make bars about the finer things in life. Once Yo Gotti signed him to his CMG imprint in 2020, Big Boogie has been captivating his fans with gritty stories from his past and uplifting bars that reflect how far he’s come. In 2020, Boogie delivered his first project via CMG Final Nightmare . He followed up with his 16-track album Underrated and released the deluxe version shortly afterward. In the past three years, he’s worked with several big names like Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, Dej Loaf and Fat Trel. Trel appears as the sole feature on Boogie’s latest album Definition of Big Dude , which dropped last month.

TiaCorine brings a rare perspective to Hip-Hop with every song she drops. After she landed a deal at South Coast Music Group in 2019, she dropped her debut project 34Corine which features synth-heavy trap single “Lotto” and her rock-inspired “Avril Lavigne.” The following her, she followed up with The Saga of 34Corine , which features “Lotto (Part 2)” featuring her labelmate DaBaby and the Kenny Beats-assisted “Luigi.” Her love for all things rap, anime, pop and rock has made TiaCorine a gem in an industry where originality is hard to find. Tia’s ability to fuse all of her passions into cohesive music that separates her from the rest of the competition deserves recognition. Hopefully, she gets all her flowers and more this year. She just dropped her third album I Can’t Wait via SCMG, which she’ll most likely perform while she’s on the road for Key Glock's Glockoma 2 tour this spring.

LaRussell is one of the hardest working artists in the industry today.. Since 2018, the Vallejo, Calif. Native has shined on his solo albums and collaborative projects with other rising artists. Once his “2021 Freestyle” went viral, LaRussell began to garner respect from top-tier acts like Chance The Rapper, Erykah Badu, Meek Mill and more. LaRussell had a huge year in 2022 after he dropped 10 projects through his collective Good Compenny alongside artists like Hokage Simon, DJ Swaggy B, Tope and Deaf Heff. He doesn't plan to slow down in 2023. At the end of January, LaRussell released his latest project Dragonfly with Dom Bailey.

Lady London

Despite launching her career in the era of viral videos and social media fame, Lady London established herself as a rapper the old fashion way: freestyling. Her “Lady Londay” freestyles attracted hundreds of thousands of fans online as well as some of the influential artists in the game like Busta Rhymes, Timbaland and Diddy. In between her freestyle, Lady London also released original songs like “Never,” “Money Over” and “What Is It Giving,” which allowed her to flex her lyrical skills over unique instrumentals. In 2022, she dropped off two projects, I Kant Make This Sh*t Up and Lady Like: The Boss Tape , that amplified her flows and attracted even more attention to her original music. She kicked off her 2023 with a fresh "Pop Ya Sh*t" freestyle over Birdman and The Clipse’s “What Happened To That Boy” beat. Based on her recent social posts, London is hard at work on her next project that will surely impress even more fans.

Seddy Hendrinx

Seddy Hendrinx has been Generation Now’s secret weapon over the past three years. The Duval, Fla. native began to garner a massive following after he turned the pain stemming from his difficult childhood into enticing bars on songs like “Smoking Lonely” and “Where I Came From,” which appear on his 2017 mixtape The Roots . After following up with projects like Death B4 Dishoner Loyal over Everything , Hendrinx landed a deal at Generation Now and released Roots II in 2019 featuring his stand out hit “LOWKEY.” He dropped two EPs in 2020, B.H.D (Black Hearted Demon) and Sayless. The latter project features his label mate Jack Harlow plus G Herbo, Jetsonmade, Gunna, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and 24hrs. Hendrinx spent a good year knocking out features with rising artists before he dropped his Gangsta Grillz project Well Sed with DJ Drama. Led by his single “Lights,” Hendrinx recruited Fivio Foreign and T-Pain to throw down on the 10-track project.

Doechii has only been in the game for a few years, but she’s already made a lasting impression on the music industry. After delivering projects like Oh The Places You’ll Go and Bra-less , the Florida native signed with TDE in 2022 and released her single “Persuasive” featuring SZA. From there, she’s made her debut at the 2022 BET Awards with an electrifying perform of “Crazy” and “Persuasive.” A few months later she dropped her first EP under TDE, she/her/black b*tch . The unique five-track project features her SZA-assisted single and a rugged collaboration with Rico Nasty. In addition to her own music, she also teamed up with Smino for his Luv 4 Rent LP, and received a major co-sign from Babyface after he enlisted her to appear on the title track of his Girls Night Out album. After the phenomenal year she had, there’s no doubt that we’ll be hearing something new from Doechii in 2023.

Central Cee

UK Drill rapper Central Cee has been impacting the U.S. with his catchy bars for the past a couple of years now. After he began recording at 14, Cee released trap-induced rap records until he switched his style up on “Day In The Life” in 2020. His breakthrough hit would lead to other bangers like “Molly” and “Loading” which helped establish him as one of the go-to drill artists. He dropped his debut mixtape Wild West independently in 2021 featuring “Day In The Life,” “Loading” and 12 other songs. From there,other prominent UK artists like FKA Twigs and Ed Sheeran caught on to his work as well as U.S. rapper Ohgeesy, who recruited him for his GEESYWORLD album in 2021. Central Cee continued to intrigue more international fans with the release of his second mixtape 23 and songs like “Doja” “No more Leaks” and “Let Go.” He’s still making noise in 2023 as well. He just dropped his latest single “Me & You” earlier this month.

Dess Dior is molding her own lane in Hip-Hop. Born in St. Louis and raised in Savannah, Ga., Dior first broke out on the scene in 2019 with singles like “F*cked Up” and “Bandz” before she dropped her debut EP Definition of Dess . A few months later, she started dating Future, which brought even more attention to her music and career. Since then, she's cut records with Coi Leray, Maliibu Miitch, Karlae, Kidd Ken and more. In 2022 Dior served up RAW -- an eight-song EP featuring songs like "Rich and Raw" and "Nann Hoe" which samples Trina's verse off Trick Daddy's "Nann." She may have ended her romantic relationship with Future, but she is joining him for his One Big Party Tour this year.

There aren’t a lot of rappers from Miami who’ve put Allapattah on the map like Fayn has. Since he dropped his first project Better Than My Last in 2017, Fayn has delivered a slew of motivational records that have caught the attention of several big names in the Hip-Hop community from Westside Gunn to Statik Selektah. Following the release of his project Certified Hustler: The Lone Wolf in 2021, Fayn has gone on to open up for a slew of heavyweights like Raekwon & Ghostface Killah,Havoc, Styles P, Kool G Rap, Termanology, Curren$y and more. In 2022, he came through with two project The Lone Wolf EP and a collaborative effort with V.E.G.A., The Lion and the Wolf . Based on his movements on social media, it looks like he’s got a lot more in store for 2023.

Lakeyah has been going viral for her raps since 2015. After knocking out a few social media challenges and freestyling over 42 Dugg and Lil Baby’s “We Paid,” the Milwaukee, WI native earned herself a deal with Quality Control. Since then, the 21-year-old lyricist has dropped off five successful projects including her most recent releases My Time (Gangsta Grillz: Special Edition) and No Pressure Pt. 2 . The latter project, which dropped back in September, features her labelmate Gloss Up, Flo Milli, Lucky Daye, Iceear Vezzo, Latto and more. Lakeyah is working on her next moves in 2023, but in the meantime, she dropped her first feature of 2023 on Kash Doll’s Back on Dexter mixtape.

Finesse2tymes

Finesse2tymes has been rapping for over a decade, but finally struck gold in 2022 following the release of his mixtape 90 Days . The Memphis native began to make a name for himself while coming up in a rap group called Memphis’ Greatest Underrated in 2012 with Moneybagg Yo, Blac Youngsta and more.They even dropped a self-titled mixtape in 2019. After serving five years behind bars, Finesse2tymes walked out of prison and delivered smash hits like “Back End” and “Guci Flow” featuring Gucci Mane. Those records appear on his breakthrough solo mixtape 90 Days which dropped via Atlantic Records and J Prince Jr.’s Mob Ties imprint. In 2023, Finesse2tymes continues to serve up new music. He just dropped his new single “Out of State.”

If you haven’t heard of Yeat by now, it’s time to get acquainted. The 23-year-old rapper acquired a massive following online as an affiliate of the underground rap collective Slayworld who’s served up innovative rage-induced trap bangers over the past eight years. He released his debut mixtape Deep Blue Stars in 2018, but he truly drew more attention after he dropped his 4L mixtape in 2021. His debut album Up 2 Me arrived a few months later, which features his popular track “Get Busy.” In 2022, Yeat came through with two more albums, 2 Alive and Lyfe . 2 Alive features collaborations with Young Thug, Gunna, Ken Carson, and more while Lyfe contains his stand-out joint with Lil Uzi Vert “Flawless.” Yeat continued his reign in 2023 with the release of his third studio album AfterLyfe . The lengthy 22-track album features his most-talked about single “Shmunk” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again.

History of Hip-Hop Music

Hip-hop is one of the most popular musical genres of the modern era. Although commonly referred to as rap music, hip-hop incorporates more than just rapping, which is just a part of it – hip-hop denotes the whole subculture behind the musical movement.

Bronx, New York City is the birthplace of hip-hop, which was mainly popularized by African Americans, Latino Americans, and Caribbean Americans living in the inter-city in the 1970s.

Hip-hop didn’t become mainstream until 1979. The musical genre started to emerge from underground block parties in ghetto neighborhoods. The first mainstream and commercial style of hip-hop is called old-school hip-hop, which was popular between 1979 to 1983. The second generation of hip-hop was called new school hip-hop, after which the genre entered the Golden age of hip-hop between 1985 to 1995.

The subgenres of hip-hop include drill, trap, alternative hip-hop, gangsta rap, and mumble rap. In 2017, hip-hop surpassed rock to be the most popular genre in the USA.

Gunna Previews What to Expect On The Bittersweet Tour

Gunna invited Complex to the rehearsals of his upcoming Bittersweet Tour before he drops his new album ‘One of Wun’ on May 10.

It’s a good time to be a Gunna fan. His new song "Whatsapp (Wassam)" is out now , his album One of Wun is dropping May 10 , and he’s about to head out on tour.

Gunna invited Complex to his rehearsals in Los Angeles and previewed what he’s cooking up for The Bittersweet Tour, which kicks off this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. In a word, it’s ambitious. Sitting in the middle of the stage is a huge statue of Gunna’s head from the DS4Ever album cover, tipped on its side in front of a massive video wall. And if you look up, you’ll see a giant bird hovering over an icy landscape.

I won’t give away all of the surprises, but Gunna has taken his stage show to a bigger, more grandiose level than he ever has before. These performances will easily live up to the large scale of venues like Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, where he’ll end the tour with a homecoming show on June 11.

Expect to hear a lot of recent hits, including standouts from the best album of 2023 ( a Gift and a Curse ) , plus songs and features from elsewhere in his catalog. And he’ll be doing it all with support from Flo Milli , who will be joining as an opener on the tour.

The Source’s Top Five Rappers of 2023

As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s only fitting to celebrate the lyrical maestros who owned the rap game throughout the year. From the electrifying presence of Latto to the rising force of Offset, the seasoned brilliance of Nas, the chart-topping prowess of Drake, and the poetic mastery of J. Cole – these artists left an indelible mark on the hip-hop landscape. Join us as we journey through the standout moments, impactful releases, and cultural influence that solidified them as the undisputed champions of the rap scene in 2023. Let the countdown begin as we honor the Top 5 Rappers of the Year, each weaving their narrative into the rich tapestry of hip-hop.

A new generation of female artists have been dominating hip-hop for the past few years and this year was Latto’s chance to lead the pack. Following multiple “Best New Artist” nominations in 2021 and 2022, Latto hit 2023 running, securing a “Best New Artist” nomination at the Grammy Awards in February of 2023 and winning the BET Artist award in 2023. In February, she also released her hit single “Lottery” and was featured on South Korean singer Jungkook’s solo single “Seven,” which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won Billboard’s “Top Global K-pop Song” of 2023 award and multiple MTV and MTV Europe awards and nominations. She was named iHeartRadio’s artist of the year for 2023 and her song “Big Energy” received their coveted Titanium award for 1 billion total plays on iHeartRadio stations. She was also honored on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list of musical artists of 2024. Her performance on Amazon Prime’s Thursday night Amazon Music Series (following Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football) broke records for the platform about viewership. As her track record shows, she is one of hip-hop’s most versatile artists and has shown that her popularity can crossover to not just other genres, but other countries as well.

One of the most well-respected names in the industry, Nas, has continued to influence hip-hop and music in general in 2023 significantly. Following multiple award nominations for his 2022 album, King’s Disease II, Nas hit the ground running in 2023. In July of this year, Nas dropped Magic 2, his sixteenth studio album. Magic 3, a collaboration with Hit-Boy, dropped in early September with his 50th birthday. Both albums were met largely with positive reception from audiences and music critics alike. His documentary, Supreme Team, which debuted at the Tribecca Film Festival, was nominated for an Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary Emmy award in 2023. His two albums this year follow a string of successful releases in which he has shown his versatility and range, collating with artists of varying genres and generations. He also continues to show how he is not only a master lyricist but also creates timeless classic beats and music that will continue to inspire future generations of artists.

Drake was everywhere and doing everything in 2023 it seems. Following the release of his 2022 studio album, Honestly, Nevermind, Drake entered 2023 prepared for a whirlwind year including a major tour and album release. In July, Drake kicked off his It’s All a Blur North American Tour with 21 Savage. (The tour, his first major one in five years, will continue through March of 2024.) In October, he dropped his eighth studio album, For the Dogs, which featured guest appearances from album features guest appearances from Teezo Touchdown, 21 Savage, J. Cole, Yeat, SZA, PartyNextDoor, Chief Keef, Bad Bunny, Sexyy Red, Lil Yachty, and more with the Scary Hours edition of the album dropping in November. His song “Rich Flex” won the 2023 Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Song and the Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Album. He also won the BET Hip-Hop Award for Best Album of the Year in 2023 and nominations in multiple other categories. In late 2023, he reunited with Nicki Minaj on the song “Needle,” courtesy of her new album, Pink Friday 2. As Drake continues his tour, fans can expect even more collaborations and Drake to push even more creative limits in the coming years.

J. Cole was all over the place in 2023- literally and figuratively. He appeared on numerous other artists’ tracks including 21 Savage’s song “a lot,” 6LACK’s “Pretty Little Fears,” Wale’s “My Boy,” Lil Durk’s “All my Life,” J-Hope’s (of BTS) track “On the Street,” Summer Walker’s “To Summer, From Cole,” and more. “All my Life” earned him the BET Award for Best Collaboration and Impact Tract (he was also nominated for four other awards including Best Artist). In 2023, he began teasing a new album, It’s A Boy, the follow-up to his 2021 hit The Off-Season. He also is preparing for a 2024 tour which kicks off in January. Considering that his 2022 Off Season Tour was nominated for Billboard Music Best Tour Award, fans can expect to be in for an epic performance from this multifaceted and extremely talented artist who has mastered the art of blending complex melodies, beats, and lyrics to create some of the generation’s top hits.

Despite the recent relationship struggles, 2024 proved to be a key year for Offset. Taking in the pain of his fallen brother, Takeoff, Offset put the focus on the music delivering his album, SET IT OFF. Powered by “Jealousy,” Offset delivered an album full of quality, showing a range of bangers with rappers like Future and Latto, reviving the Hip-Hop and R&B collab on “Princess Cut” with Chloe, and delivering a sleeper song of the year candidate on “Worth It” with Don Toliver. And when it comes to music videos, very few can find the range of Offset, evoking the energy of Michael Jackson to Baby Boy in each video he delivers. Who said a rapper can’t hit an eight count? The brand of Offset also stretched into film, becoming the animated Offshark in Baby Shark’s Big Movie and fashion, showcasing that he is one of the figures to watch in Hip-Hop. A key moment for Offset this year was his reunion with Quavo on stage in celebration of their fallen member’s legacy. What’s best about Offset, he seems to just be getting started.

Australia concerts in 2024: here’s a list of shows and tours coming up

Artists touring Down Under in 2024 include Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Hozier, Laufey, aespa, IVE and more

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA, it’s poised to do just that.

From debut headline shows for breakout artists to bustling festival sideshow programs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a stellar batch of musicians make their way Down Under in 2024. Read on for NME’s roundup of all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia this year.

James Taylor: An Evening with James Taylor & His All-Star Band When: April 12 – April 28 Find tickets and more info here

If there was ever a festival made for James Taylor & His All-Star Band at this juncture of his 50-year career, it’s Day on the Green . The singer will perform at wineries in Queensland (Sirromet Wines in Mount Cotton), and New South Wales (Bimbadgen in the Hunter Valley, and Centennial Vineyards in Bowral) across April 2024. Taylor will be accompanied by Aussie pair Josh Pyke and Ella Hooper .

Taylor is also playing his own headline shows. After selling out dates in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, new shows have been added in those cities. A Live Nation pre-sale begins February 9 while general on-sale starts February 12.

After a new mixtape, charting singles and landmark Boiler Room set, drum’n’bass lifers Chase & Status celebrated a huge 2023. This year, the British duo will bring the party to Australia and New Zealand on a sold-out co-headlining tour with Australia’s very own Luude. They’re notably playing RAC Arena in Perth, on top of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Fresh off winning three Grammys, SZA has announced a tour of Australia and New Zealand this April. The ‘Kill Bill’ singer will be performing two shows in New Zealand and eight across Australia, with shows confirmed for Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Initially slated to appear in Australia in November 2023, Beth Orton  rescheduled her Australian tour to April 2024 and added an extra show in Tasmania. The folk musician will now embark on a four-date run with performances in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane from April 24 to April 30, with tickets for the original cities still valid for the rescheduled dates. On Saturday night (April 27), Vancouver witnessed Diljit Dosanjh make history.

The artist kicked off his Dil-Luminati tour on April 27 with a sold-out stadium show at BC Place to a crowd of 54,000 people — making it the largest ever Punjabi music concert outside of India .

The show leaned into its historic accomplishment, with an ominous voice preceding Diljit Dosanjh’s entry, “Remember, firsts are always special and what you witness here will never be repeated.”

With anticipation palpable in the air, Dosanjh delivered a high-powered, electric set with charisma and an undeniable star-power that easily captivated the record-breaking audience. It was an unapologetic celebration of Punjabi music and culture.

An eager multigenerational crowd braved hours of traffic and long rainy lines to watch Dosanjh take the stage. After all, the artist has a deep connection to Vancouver. Several of his popular Punjabi films that accelerated his career like Jatt and Juliet and Honsla Rakh were filmed across Greater Vancouver, making this moment that much more special for fans who have been longtime supporters far before his recent international successes. For many, the show felt like a reunion, with people stopping to warmly embrace old friends and family throughout the venue.

Dosanjh emerged from the ground in a cloud of fog with a hand raised to open the show with “ G.O.A.T. ”, the forceful and energetic title track from his 2020 album. He was fashionable in an all-black Punjabi kurta and chadra , with sunglasses, gloves, and a turla style turban , complete with a signature pleated fan accent. At the first chance, the singer broke into bhangra amidst a rainfall of confetti. The crowd cheered him on and joined in, his image projected on the two large screens on either side of him. Behind him, local bhangra dancers backed him up throughout the show.

After his first song, Dosanjh paused to scan the sea of people around him. While processing this unprecedented moment in his career, the audience processed it along with him. He did this throughout the show, pausing to drink in his surroundings and address the audience with gratitude or shoutout local collaborators, recognizing this as a collective win for the Punjabi community — one that is just as much ours as it is his.

“Now, Punjabis have made it to stadiums,” Dosanjh said. “The next generation won’t be able to say that this has never happened before. Now for generations to come, our kids can dream even bigger.”

During his performance of “Vibe,” the singer scooped up a young fan from the crowd who was dressed in signature Diljit Dosanjh attire, inviting him to dance with him. As the boy, understandably intimidated by the size of the crowd in front him, got more comfortable, he broke into dance himself. It was Diljit Dosanjh’s hopes for the next generation coming to life right in front of him — a child who can now literally see himself on stage performing for a stadium of fans.

In over two decades in the music and film industry, Dosanjh has solidified himself as one of the defining global artists of our generation. Just last year, he was the first Indian-born Punjabi singer to perform at Coachella and has recently made strides for international music amassing hundreds of millions of streams on collaborative tracks with Sia , Saweetie and Camilo respectively. More recently, Dosanjh is fresh off the critical acclaim of his performance of the titular Amar Singh Chamkila , a Bollywood biopic about the life and death of the controversial Punjabi singer who was killed at the height of his fame in 1988.

The 27-song setlist, running for about two and a half hours including an intermission, featured a thoughtfully crafted mix of songs that catered to the crowd. Dosanjh deftly transitioned between songs from early in his career to the newer hits from his meteoric rise in the last few years — with everything from Punjabi folk to hip-hop to pop. The crowd was enthralled throughout without a single drop in energy or enthusiasm. Dosanjh even interspersed a few covers and asides of songs by Chamkila, like “ Kan Kar Gal Sun Makhna ,” a nod to his most recent film role. The stadium itself came alive, with thousands of light-up wristbands illuminating the area, and well-timed effects like pyrotechnics, balloons and confetti throughout.

Ultimately though, Diljit Dosanjh’s historic Vancouver concert was a testament to the rock star that he has become. This moment, shared with thousands of supporters who are acutely aware of the gravity of this accomplishment, was the perfect culmination of his journey as an artist. His vocals were sharp and precise, and his years building his chops as a performer were on full display.

Diljit Dosanjh is showing the world that Punjabi artists and music are worth investing in. A high-value, blockbuster show for all generations is a risk in so many ways. But Dosanjh shows how it’s a risk worth taking, time and time again.

So many of us packed into BC Place on Saturday had never dreamed of seeing a Punjabi artist perform at this scale. It was a big dream, and Vancouver turned up to make it a reality.

Diljit Dosanjh's comfort and ease on that big stage gave the impression that he is on the cusp of something even bigger. Everything up until now has just been the warm up.

After a scorching round one display from Kendrick Lamar earlier this week with “Euphoria,” the pgLang stalwart is doubling down and taking a page out of Drake’s book by going “Back-to-Back” with his latest diss track, “6:16 in LA.”

Released early Friday morning (May 3), Lamar charges Drake with a barrage of attacks about having traitors on his OVO squad, rapping: “Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me?/ Fake bully, I hate bullies/ You must be a terrible person/ Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it/ Can’t Toosie Slide up out of this one, it’s just gon’ resurface.”

Lamar’s onslaught continued, calling out Drake’s brethren when he said his close ones are stabbing him behind his back. “100 n—as that you got on salary/ and 20 of them want you as a casualty/ and one of them is actually/ is next to you / and two of them is practically tied to your lifestyle,” he spews.

With “Euphoria” amassing a staggering 9.2 million Spotify streams on its debut day, Lamar’s decision to strike again leaves fans on the edge, eagerly anticipating a comeback from the OVO captain. Drake, seemingly unperturbed, brushed off Lamar’s initial move by posting a clip from the 1999 rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You on Instagram. However, his cryptic comment during his appearance with Nicki Minaj at her Pink Friday Tour stop on April 30 hinted at a possible retaliation: “You know what time it is — you know what I have to do.”
