Which Berlin Walking Tour is Right for You: English or Vergleich Tours?

  • 2024-03-07 2024-03-07

Are you planning a trip to Berlin and looking to explore the city on foot? Joining a walking tour can be a fantastic way to discover Berlin’s rich history, vibrant culture, and iconic landmarks. In this guide, we’ll compare two popular options: English tours and Vergleich tours. So, let’s dive in and find out which one suits you best!

English Tours

English tours in Berlin are specifically designed for English-speaking tourists. These tours are conducted in English by local guides who are fluent in the language. Here are some key features of English tours:

  • Language: English tours provide a fully immersive experience for English-speaking visitors. You can easily understand the guide’s commentary, ask questions, and engage in conversations with fellow participants.
  • Historical Interpretation: English tours often focus on Berlin’s history, including World War II, the Cold War, and the Berlin Wall. They provide detailed insights into the city’s past, sharing stories, facts, and anecdotes.
  • Schedule and Availability: English tours are frequently scheduled throughout the day, making it easier to find a time slot that suits your itinerary. Many tour operators offer online booking, ensuring availability when you need it.

Vergleich Tours

Vergleich tours, which translates to “comparison” in German, are unique offerings that explore contrasts within Berlin – old versus new, traditional versus modern. Here’s what you need to know about Vergleich tours:

  • English-Friendly: While the primary language of Vergleich tours is German, some operators do offer English translations, either through guides or audio devices. This enables non-German speakers to enjoy these comparitive experiences.
  • Contrasting Destinations: Vergleich tours typically take you to contrasting neighborhoods, such as Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg, or show the differences between East and West Berlin. These tours showcase diverse architectural styles, cultural practices, and local atmospheres.
  • Insightful Contrasts: Vergleich tours allow you to gain a deeper understanding of Berlin’s development over time. You’ll learn about the city’s evolution, urban planning, and social dynamics.

Which Tour is Right for You?

Now that you know the differences between English and Vergleich tours, how do you decide which one to choose? Here are a few factors to consider:

  • Language Proficiency: If you’re more comfortable with English and want a comprehensive understanding of Berlin’s history, an English tour is ideal. However, if you have a basic understanding of German or wish to explore Berlin from a contrasting perspective, a Vergleich tour could be an exciting choice.
  • Interests: Consider your specific interests and what you hope to gain from the tour. If you’re eager to explore particular neighborhoods, experience local culture, or discover Berlin’s architectural diversity, a Vergleich tour might be more suitable.
  • Availability: Check the availability and schedule of both types of tours to find the most convenient option for your travel plans. Be sure to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to Berlin walking tours, both English and Vergleich tours offer unique and enriching experiences. The choice ultimately depends on your language preferences, desired focus, and personal interests. Whether you’re keen to delve into Berlin’s history or explore the city’s contrasting neighborhoods, there’s a tour that’s perfect for you.

So, before you embark on your Berlin adventure, consider all the factors we’ve discussed and choose the walking tour that aligns best with your expectations. Whichever option you select, prepare for an immersive journey through Berlin’s captivating past and present.

The Best Walking Tours in Berlin

The iconic Berliner Dom on a sunny summer day in Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a moveable feast. The sprawling German capital has remarkable restaurants (serving cuisines from all over the world), amazing bars, some of the best clubs in the world, cool third-wave coffee spots, world-class museums, an eclectic mix of architectural styles, one of the most diverse populations in Europe , and a real mix of quirky subcultures.

To help you explore this complex history, there is a legion of guided tours you can take to get an up-close and personal view of this Central European metropolis — from walking tours to eating to drinking tours to biking to driving around in a Trabant, the kitschy Communist-era cars. Walking tours are my favorite way to see cities because you have a local guide you around who can answer your questions and share their insider tips.

Here’s my list of the best walking tours in Berlin to help you make the most out of your time in this cool capital!

Best Overall Tour

The Get Your Guide Insider company logo

Insider’s Third Reich and Cold War Tour

If you want to see Berlin’s main highlights and learn about the turbulent past of Germany’s capital, take this Third Reich and Cold War tour . Run by expert local guides, it’s the best-paid tour for budget travelers looking to learn more about Berlin, its violent and complicated past, and how the city came to be. I can’t recommend it enough!

Best Free Tour

New Europe Logo logo

This free two-hour walking tour starts at the iconic Brandenburg Gate and slowly makes its way around the main sites of the city, including the striking Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Hitler’s former bunker, a swath of the Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie, giving you a nice introduction on the 20th-century history of Berlin. Just remember to tip at the end!

Here are a few more walking tour options to help you make the most of your time in Berlin:

1. Original Berlin Tours

Meet at the fountain near the Park Inn on Alexanderplatz and get ready for a fun, free tour of Berlin. With groups of 10 people or fewer, these walking tours will ensure you have access to the guide as you make stops at Reichstag, the Berliner Dom, Checkpoint Charlie, and various World War II places of battle. The itinerary is up to each guide, so you never know where she or he might take you. But you’ll learn a lot no matter what!

2. Secret Tours

Berlin has a lot of secrets — and Secret Tours wants to share them. Choose to head out to Teufelsberg , a Cold War-era base for US Army wiretapping programs on the edge of the former West Berlin; or explore Charité, the city’s weird and wonderful centuries-old hospital. You can also go on a walking tour through the backyards and courtyards of Mitte apartment buildings , an opportunity you would not get if you were trying to do it on your own. If you want something unique and niche, this is the company for you.

Tours from 20 EUR.

3. Trabi Safari

Tired of trudging through the city? Then hop in a Trabant, or Trabi, as they’re called in Germany. These diminutive automobiles were a Communist-era automobile staple in Germany. The body of the cars were made from plastic. Today they are a nostalgic symbol of the erstwhile East Berlin. And this tour company offers a drive around Berlin in a Trabi while you see the sights and learn about the history of the city. Best of all, you get your very own Trabi to drive during the tour.

Tours from 59 EUR.

4. Alternative Berlin Tours

If you’ve heard everything there is to know about Hitler and Bismarck and you want to skip the typical highlights and see a different side of Berlin, this free walking tour is for you. The informative guides regale tour-takers with stories about the squatting culture of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the legendary techno club scene, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and punk rock culture. Tours last around three hours and they end at a riverside “beach bar” where you can have a beer with the guide.

5. Fork and Walk

If you’re a foodie like me, this tour company does guided tours that combine food, street art, and history as well as tours for vegans (Berlin is one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the world). But if you take the “Trends & Classics” tour you’ll get to sample the iconic currywurst, sip some schnapps, drink some local brews, and eat German pastries, among other delectable things. Just make sure to bring an appetite!

Tours from 69 EUR.

6. Berliner Unterwelten

These fascinating walking tours take you underground. And I’m not just talking in metaphors. You literally stroll under the streets of Berlin, exploring various Cold War and World War II-era bunkers; gawking at the few remnants of Germania, the utopian metropolis that Hitler wanted to build; and walking through sub-terrestrial tunnels that were used for secret and nefarious purposes — including the tunnels that were dug under the Berlin Wall.

Tours from 16 EUR.

Learn about berlin's fascinating history .

Berlin has a history like no other city. From a proud empire under the Kaisers destroyed by World War One to the capital of progressive culture in the 1920s, Berlin would be turned upside-down after Hitler's rise to power in 1933. Following the devastation of WWII the city would be divided by the Allies, only to become the global symbol of the Cold War when it became divided by the Berlin Wall in 1961.

Finally, the German capital would become a symbol of hope when in 1989 the Wall came down, allowing Germany to become one country again. Using the latest historical research our guides will show you the wild, tragic story of this great city. Stroll through the Brandenburg Gate, stand above the remains of Hitler's bunker, and cross the Cold War frontier at Checkpoint Charlie. In under 4 hours you'll see it all.

If you want to experience an unforgettable cultural flair, you have to come to Berlin! The colorful art scene, hundreds of galleries, events and museums are definitely a ‘must-see’ for every visitor.

For 28 years, the infamous Berlin Wall divided the city and the entire continent into two parts . It separated people and tore whole families apart. After the fall of the “anti-fascist protection barrier” the city shines today in the splendor of fresh reconstruction with a mixture of architecture, entertainment, shopping, sports and cultural facilities.

We love Berlin and are proud to call it home. We welcome you to this amazing place and would love to show you the sights! Socialize with other travelers and discover Berlin’s history from its humble beginnings as a small fishing village to the strength of the Prussian Empire, and of course the darkest hours of the evil, Nazi Third Reich.

See the wall that separated the city and claimed the freedom of millions during the Soviet Rule. See the guard towers, times memorials, and street lights that Stalin’s Soviet empire built and still stand today.

Contact us – and look forward to the following highlights you should not miss when coming to Berlin.

This historical tour of Berlin visits the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Holocaust Memorial, Luftwaffe HQ, Checkpoint Charlie, Unter Den Linden (Humboldt University), The site of the Nazi book burning, Gendarmenmarkt, and more .

The Reichstag

The old Reichstag building, which had been constructed in 1892, burned down after an attack in 1933.Today, an impressive glass dome towers over the reconstructed building, providing an impressive view of the city , especially at night from the Rooftop Restaurant. Since 1999, the Reichstag has once again been the seat of the German parliament , the ‘Bundestag’.

The Berlin Cathedral

Situated on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Berlin Cathedral with its 75-meter-high dome is one of the most imposing buildings in the city. After decades of restoration, Berlin’s largest church, which was destroyed during the war, is once again resplendent in its stately splendor.

During our excursion we are also going to visit the Hohenzollern Crypt with about 100 sarcophagi, coffins and monuments from the 16th to the 20th century.

WWII Battlefields

In Seelow, a small town just outside Berlin, 768,000 Soviet soldiers with more than 22,000 tanks, artillery and aircraft faced off against some 200,000 German defenders. After battles with heavy losses, Germany was finally liberated from Nazi terror.

Our tour highlights:

  • Visit to the Seelow Heights War Museum,
  • the command bunker of Marshal Zhukov
  • … and the Soviet and German military cemeteries.

Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie is without a doubt the most famous border crossing between East and West Berlin . In the associated museum, right next to the original guardhouse , you can discover numerous exhibitions and exhibits tracing the history of the divided city.

The remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall

From 1961 to 1989, the Berlin Wall not only divided the city of Berlin in half, but also the whole country. Today, sections of this graffiti-covered wall still remain. An appalling reminder of the hostility that once divided Europe.

The Brandenburg Gate

Berlin’s most famous landmark is the Brandenburg Gate. Since the reunification of Germany, it has stood as a symbol of unity and peace. Nowadays, Germany’s biggest New Year’s Party takes place at Brandenburg Gate every year.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

2,711 concrete blocks commemorate the murdered Jews of Europe. This impressive Holocaust memorial also includes an information center where original letters, diaries and photographs of the victims of the Nazi regime are on display.
